Editor

Although the weather in Saskatchewan has been unseasonably kind this year, many of us are eager to do away with icy windows, slippery sidewalks, and that infuriating white stuff in exchange for longer days, gentle breezes and crisp, refreshing rain.

We may try a different hair style, tweak an old recipe, or let go of things from the past to make room for a better tomorrow. It seems fitting that, in a month of new beginnings, I take my place as the new Editor for Pink Magazine.

As a mother, wife, musician and teacher who has a love for travel, baking, fashion and more, I am inspired by the messages found in this month’s issue that encourage women to be better versions of themselves. I am also touched by the legacy of a woman who brought pride and hope to our province, to her own family, and to women everywhere.

This role is new for me, but I am looking forward to all this fresh start has to offer.

Graduation day is a special time in every young woman’s life. Standing in front of her family, friends, and peers, she celebrates her accomplishments and looks ahead to the future and opportunities to come.

For these women and their families, an experience that should be marked with ambition and optimism often becomes tainted with feelings of inadequacy and vulnerability.

Ainsley Robertson and Chantal Hounjet recognized that emotions such as these have no place in such a pivotal and transitional moment in a young person’s life. That is why, in 2007, they set out to make a change.

Together, Robertson and Hounjet founded The Princess Shop (http:// www.theprincessshop.ca), a Saskatchewan-based, non-profit organization devoted to enhancing the graduation experiences of young women around the province and equipping them with tools and resources for the future. The Princess Shop’s mission is to empower women to recognize and harness their potential and, in doing so, lead active, healthy, and happy lives.

“We believe that marking accomplishments is an incredibly important part of a young woman’s life,” said Robertson. “Many young women in Saskatchewan are not able to mark the accomplishment of high school graduation because of the associated financial costs and growing pressure to spend a lot of money on that special day.”

“I was raised to always treat everyone as equals and to give back to my community through volunteerism,” added Hounjet. “Together, we created an organization that has gone far beyond either of our imaginations at the time.”

The Princess Shop is founded on four core values: community, passion, perseverance, and mentorship. These values are at the heart of non-profit’s three main program offerings: the Dress Program, the Fairy Godmother Program, and the Next Chapter Program.

Thanks to the support of many wonderful donors and community sponsors, Dress Program applicants are outfitted with a graduation dress and accessories, hair and make-up appointments, and even limousine rides so that they arrive to their graduation ceremony feeling confidence and a sense of belonging. Since 2007, the non-profit has received over 3,500 dress donations and is pleased to offer graduates an assortment of colours, sizes, and styles.

She had a passion for non-profit organizations and was exceptionally creative and hardworking.”

Prior to accepting the full-time position, Robson , a born-and-raised Saskatonian, volunteered as The Princess Shop’s Director of Operations for a number of months. During this time, she learned a lot about what overseeing a non-profit operation involved and accepted Robertson’s offer without hesitation.

Robson’s involvement in the non-profit sector precedes her appointment as The Princess Shop’s Executive Director. After her high school graduation, Robson learned of and applied to Katimavik (https:// www.katimavik.org/), a youth volunteer initiative for men and women between the ages of 17 and 21 to spend nine months working on community projects in three different locations. For Robson, this took her to Donnacona, QC; Tatamagouche, NS; and Neepawa, MB. “[Applying to Katimavik] was the best decision I ever made,” said Robson. “It was a unique experience and was a really great time to learn about myself and where I was going. I also developed a huge appreciation for the non-profit sector.”

Robson believes that the strength and vitality of a non-profit organi-

zation hinges on two things: community and volunteers.

“As a non-profit organization, you are part of a community and you put so much into that community,” she explained. “It is so essential.

When you add personal involvement, you have the ability to connect with individuals.”

Robson has learned these lessons both from hands-on experience in non-profit environments and from the thesis she completed as part of her Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.) in Marketing from the University of Saskatchewan’s Edwards School of Business. Eager to unite her budding passion for non-profit work and her academic studies, Robson’s thesis focused on relationship marketing in a volunteer setting.

She shared that this research helped inform The Princess Shop’s volunteer culture, something she described as “very special.”

“Volunteering with The Princess Shop is not like any other organization,” said Robson. “It’s important to me to build special relationships with our volunteers and to grow our volunteer culture by meeting regularly as a team.”

Volunteer opportunities with The Princess Shop cover a broad scope, ranging from 6 – 10 hour per week commitments, to an inventory of casual volunteers who are called on a few times a year to assist with various operational or administrative duties.

As with any non-profit, fundraising is imperative in order to keep business operations afloat. According to Robson, a significant portion of The Princess Shop’s revenues are generated by the Glass Slipper Benefit, an annual celebration scheduled for Thursday, April 7th at Saskatoon’s TCU Place (35 22nd Street East).

“The Glass Slipper Benefit is a great opportunity to share with our community of supporters,” explained Robson. “We host a dinner, a live auction, and a silent auction, but the highlight of the night is really when we invite our keynote speaker – a past Princess graduate – to speak. It’s both inspiring and uplifting.”

That so many young women feel comfortable and empowered to take advantage of the resources and services made available to them through The Princess Shop affirms the importance of keeping the organization’s presence throughout the

province for years to come.

For example, through the Next Chapter Program, a former Princess Shop graduate applied for and was awarded full scholarship to study esthetics through Saskatoon’s Spa Academy (http://www.spaacademy.ca). Each year over the graduation season, Spa Academy donates make-up services to that year’s cohort of Princess Shop graduates. Robson was touched to witness a past graduate applying make-up for an upcoming graduate.

“It’s great to see things come full circle,” she said.

Robertson and Hounjet still maintain active ties to The Princess Shop today. Robertson sits on the non-profit’s Board of Directors and Hounjet volunteers at various fundraising events. Her company, Fresh Living (http://www.fresh-living.ca) proudly sponsors the Fairy Godmother Program. Both are pleased to see the level of growth and reach that the organization has enjoyed with Robson at its helm.

“What Karen has done with the organization over the past three years is remarkable,” said Robertson. “I will forever be grateful that Karen took the foundation which Chantal and I had laid and continued to expand its reach and deepen its impact in our province.”

“I am proud to be funding [the Fairy Godmother] program, as I know firsthand the impact it has on Princess graduates,” said Hounjet. “I have witnessed so many success stories through the program already and I know there are many more to come!”

At the end of 2015, The Princess Shop had supported 628 young women in Saskatchewan prepare for their graduation day. Of these young women, many choose to continue their relationship with the non-profit as they look ahead to and prepare for adulthood.

“[The Princess Shop] is about more than surface level dressing up,” said Robson, who shared that the organization has recently added a collection of financial literacy and work readiness workshops. “It’s about recognizing and celebrating success. Graduation is such a big transition in someone’s life and we want to be there to offer support, during and after.”

A 30% increase in applicants meant that 2015 was a milestone year for The Princess Shop, but the work does not stop there. Robson explained that her goals for the future involve continuing to promote The Princess Shop’s services and building connections and networks by reaching out to rural Saskatchewan communities.

“2015 was a big year of growth, but we know there are more girls out there,” said Robson. “It’s important that we reach out and ensure our services are accessible to all graduating women in need in Saskatchewan. If someone wants to learn more about The Princess Shop, there is lots of information available on our website or they are welcome to contact me directly.”

Women We Won’t Forget Remembering Great Saskatchewan Women

Sandra Marie Schmirler (June 11, 1963 - March 2, 2000) Olympic Gold Medalist - Nagano, Japan, 1998

Wife, Mother, Friend, Champion: These words are written on the memorial placed for Sandra Schmirler at Riverside cemetery in Regina. The order in which the words appear says much about the person they commemorate. They speak to her priorities and passions. They reveal Sandra’s true legacy.

Born in Biggar, Saskatchewan, Sandra Marie, along with her two older sisters, was introduced to curling on the farm of her childhood friend, Anita Silvernagle. There, on a natural ice sheet flooded by Anita’s parents, Sandra threw her first curling rock. Sandra went on to become a fierce competitor. Anita noted, “. . . even as a kid, Sandra hated losing.”

Years, and thousands of rocks, later, Sandra was on the winning team for the 1981 Saskatchewan High School Curling Championship. Later still, as an adult, Sandra gathered a team around her that became world-class. Throughout the 1990’s Sandra, along with teammates Jan Betker, Joan McCusker and Marcia Gudereit, went on to dominate the sport by winning three Canadian championships and three world titles, along with the gold medal at the 1998 Nagano, Japan Olympic Winter Games. These accomplishments put Sandra and her native Saskatchewan at the centre of the world stage. She became a national sports icon, but there is more to Sandra’s story than glory, fame and accomplishment.

Sandra’s real legacy lies in her spirit of leadership, friendship and devotion to family. Her emotional style was revealed in

her joyful hugs for teammates when a great shot was made, the tears shed when competition forced her to be away from family, and her generosity in sharing her successes. When she showed up in Biggar at the annual Rodeo Days celebration in the summer of 1998, she brought the gold medal and Olympic team jacket along for anyone who wanted to try them on.

Sandra was without pretense. She shunned the celebrity that accompanied her fame. Her teammate’s husband, Brian McCusker, noted, “Sandra was always more concerned with the problems of others.” To Sandra, devotion to family and friends eclipsed the accolades that were showered upon her from around the world.

Sandra overcame many obstacles in her 36 years. She was born with a club foot and survived a divorce in 1992. She

remarried and struggled to conceive, undergoing surgery which finally resulted in the birth of her daughter, Sara, just six weeks before she won the Olympic trials. She was forced to leave Sara with her sister, Carol, when she left to represent Canada in international competition. The world never saw the emotional strain she bore with this separation, but those closest to Sandra knew how difficult it was for her to leave baby Sara, and marveled at how she remained undaunted as she skipped her team to the Olympic gold medal. In 1999, Sandra gave birth to her second daughter, Jenna.

Shortly thereafter Sandra was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor behind her heart.

Sandra’s indomitable spirit emerged once again. She remained positive and encouraging to others as she battled the disease.

She drew inspiration from daughters Sara and then 8 month-old Jenna. She poured her life into the girls and their activities as she fought to defeat an illness that stubbornly resisted any form of treatment. Sandra lost her battle with cancer on March 2, 2000.

Sandra Schmirler has been honored posthumously by being inducted to the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, as well as receiving the Curling Freytag Award. Later, she was also inducted into the World Curling Federation Hall of Fame. Today, Sandra’s daughter Sara continues in her mother’s footsteps. Sara, now 18, has begun competing in the sport and showing evidence that she has inherited her mother’s competitive spirit.

Sandra’s true legacy was her bright, engaging personality, her incredible zest for life, and her devotion to friends and family. These were the qualities that made her a true champion.

“Schmirler the Curler”, as she became known to many, is sorely missed today by those who knew her best.

Some want to spend their later years travelling the world, others want to stay at home and tend the garden, and yet others plan to work at a job they love indefinitely. In each case, different savings are required and a number of variables, ranging from spousal contributions to your health status, can impact the amounts needed.

Advocates of the “number” often refer to a 2010 C.D. Howe study that suggested most Canadians who want to retire at age 65 and replace 70% of their working incomes, must save 10%-21% of pre-tax earnings every year for 35 years. That can be a daunting goal for many people who find it challenging to save even 10% of their paycheque each year. As others have since pointed out, a 70% income replacement goal is a “gold standard” and many can be quite comfortable having 50%-60% of their income in retirement.

That said, smart savings and investment choices today are critical to ensuring you have access to a secure post-retirement income. It is also true the longer you delay saving for retirement, the more money you will need to set aside in later years. So, how do you take the first step toward figuring out what your retirement savings goal should be?

Working with an advisor can help. Rather than worry about achieving a single large number, an advisor will take a structured approach to figuring out what you need to be comfortable at various points in your life. His or her questions will range from “How will I generate income in retirement?” to “How will inflation and taxes affect my lifestyle?”

To figure out what you need to save now, an advisor will help create a customized plan to reduce your risk for the years to come. For many, the simplest step is to PMS 5535 open an RRSP or TFSA, and apply a structured approach saving a little each month.

Your advisor should also help educate you on managing money after or as you near retirement. It is important, for example, to understand the impact of inflation and identify safe withdrawal rates that account for today’s longer life-spans. As you age, your advisor should also help you avoid high risks, and keep investment costs and taxes low.

Lisa Yes, I track my workouts, although not religiously and if I feel like implementing something new or off plan, I will absolutely do it. I make sure not to cut my workouts short and often I will perform what I have planned and add on a few fun moves at the end, always ending my workouts on a humble, yet fun and refreshing note.

I create a plan for myself every 3-4 months, setting quarterly goals for what I want to achieve during and by the end of that quarter. This plan type and goal setting is done on my iPad notes and I will log my workouts on my BodySpace account.

BodySpace is an amazing app by bodybuilding.com that allows you to track your workouts and read articles and workouts from other fitness enthusiasts around the world.

A plan for your fitness is paramount. It does not have to be super complex or confusing, but you should always have a plan for what you are working towards, what your goal to achieve is and how you will execute your goals and fuel your plan for that

Have you ever looked at a photo in a magazine and thought, “Wow, I wish I looked like this all the time”? When flipping through the pages, you see beautiful women with thick, long, luscious, perfectly waved hair. It makes you envious that your hair has never been that long, or will never grow that thick. You look in the mirror and wish that your hair wasn’t so flat and that it had something more to it. Well, let me tell you secret ladies, these models do not wake up like this. It takes weeks to prepare and hours before the shoot to become picture perfect.

First off, hair color needs to be done a week or two ahead of time so that the color is fresh and vibrant for the shoot. A week before hand, any facial hair will be groomed by waxing or tweezing.

Generally, makeup artists do not ask for the models to do this the day of because it can create small bumps on the model’s face, depending on their sensitivity. The day of the shoot, hair is done by a trained professional that will style and set the hair in place, depending on the look or style they want to achieve.

This can take upwards of an hour. For this specific shoot that I am showcasing with Gina’s portraits, the model’s hair is actually about shoulder length. We added clip-in extensions for fullness and length. Once hair is done, it’s time for makeup.

The makeup artist is trained to work with different people’s face shapes and is knowledgeable in contouring and highlighting the model’s best features. It can take forty-five minutes or longer to get that flawless look. Once hair and makeup is perfect, the model heads over to the photographer who has a concept and a vision for the look they are going for. The model then poses and hundreds, sometimes thousands, of photos are taken from that one shoot. I once was involved in a photo shoot where the model stood in one spot and posed for three hours to get a specific look. I wish it was as easy as saying, “smile for the camera”.

Once the shoot is done it is the photographer’s job to retouch and edit the photos. Editing can take a few minutes to a several hours for one photo. If there is a single hair out of place, it can get edited out. Oh, the powers of Photoshop!

So ladies, please do not be so hard on yourselves. These models do not just wake up with perfectly styled hair, so do not expect that you will. It is amazing, though, that by taking an extra ten to fifteen minutes to blow dry or curl your hair, how great it can make you feel that day. Remember, we are all beautiful and unique in our own way.

Catwalk for Water is a Regina based event involving so many things that I love most about my career: makeup, hair, fashion, artist collaboration, community and philanthropy. This hair and makeup show and gala packs it all into one punch!

Now in its fourth year, Catwalk For Water promises something different with the focus on unbridled creativity. Hair stylists, makeup artists, designers, models, clients, friends, and sponsors will bring you a hair and makeup show where each salon will create its own segment. The wardrobe will be created from recycled, repurposed and reused materials, which has been astounding in past years. This is an opportunity for artists to come together for a common good and to be able to use full artistic freedom to create a visual show of art on a runway.

Feel right at home in retirement (NC) Where will you live when you retire? It’s a question many of us — even those closer to retirement age — haven’t considered. In fact, less than half of working Canadians aged 50 plus* have planned for where they will live, according to a recent RBC survey.

Hilary Farr, a Canadian designer, says couples need to plan now to ensure that they are on the same page when it comes to their future living arrangements.

Butter Chicken

Makes 6 Servings 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 4 large skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces 1 onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons curry powder 1 tablespoon curry paste 2 teaspoons tandoori masala 1 teaspoon garam masala 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste 15 green cardamom pods 1 cup low-fat plain yogurt 1 (14 ounce) can coconut milk salt to taste Directions: 1. Melt the butter and vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in the chicken, onion, and garlic. Cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 10 minutes. Stir in the curry powder, curry paste, tandoori masala, garam masala, and tomato paste until no lumps of tomato paste remain. Pour into a slow cooker, and stir in the cardamom pods, coconut milk, and yogurt.

Season to taste with salt.

2. Cook on High 4 to 6 hours, or on Low 6 to 8 hours until the chicken is tender and the sauce has reduced to your desired consistency.

Remove and discard the cardamom pods before serving.

1 (5 pound) bone-in beef pot roast

1 teaspoon salt

salt and pepper to taste

1 teaspoon garlic powder

4 large skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, cut into cubes

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, or as needed 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 8 ounces sliced mushrooms 1 medium onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced

10 medium red potatoes, quartered

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 (8 ounce) package baby carrots

1/2 teaspoon crumbled dried oregano

1 cup chopped celery

1/2 teaspoon ground coriander

2 (26 ounce) cans condensed cream of chicken soup

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon butter

1 (4 pound) boneless pork shoulder roast

1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 bay leaves

1 tablespoon tomato paste

2 cups chicken broth

2 1/2 cups chicken broth

Directions:

1 tablespoon ground black pepper

3 medium carrots, cut into chunks

1. Mix together salt, garlic powder, cumin, oregano, coriander, and cinnamon in a bowl.

Coat pork with the spice mixture. Place the bay leaves in the bottom of a slow cooker and place the pork on top. Pour the chicken broth around the sides of the pork, being careful not to rinse off the spice mixture.

1 (16 ounce) bag frozen mixed vegetables

2. Cover and cook on Low until the pork shreds easily with a fork, about 10 hours. Turn the meat after it has cooked for 5 hours. When the pork is tender, remove from slow cooker, and shred with two forks. Use cooking liquid as needed to moisten the meat.

2. Stir the frozen mixed vegetables into the slow cooker, and cook 1 hour more.

2 stalks celery, cut into chunks 1 sprig fresh rosemary 2 sprigs fresh thyme Directions: 1. Generously season both sides of roast with salt and pepper. Sprinkle flour over the top until well coated, and pat it into the meat. Shake off any excess.

2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Sear the roast on both sides for 5-6 minutes each, until well browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Directions: 1. Combine the chicken, potatoes, carrots, celery, chicken soup, chicken bouillon, garlic salt, celery salt, and black pepper in a slow cooker; cook on High for 5 hours.

3. Reduce the heat to medium and stir in mushrooms and butter; cook for 3-4 minutes.

4. Stir in onion; cook for 5 minutes, until onions are translucent and begin to brown. Add garlic, stir for about a minute.

5. Stir in 1 1/2 tablespoons flour; cook and stir for about 1 minute. Add tomato paste, and cook for another minute.

6. Slowly add chicken stock, stir to combine, and return to a simmer. Remove skillet from the heat.

7. Place carrots and celery in the slow cooker.

Place roast over the vegetables and pour in any accumulated juices. Add rosemary and thyme.

8. Pour onion and mushroom mixture over the top of the roast. Cover slow cooker, turn to high and cook the roast for 5-6 hours, until the meat is fork tender.

9. Skim off any fat from the surface and remove the bones. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Why is it so important to choose a licensed mortgage broker versus the bank; what makes them different?

Give us your professional run-down of mortgage penalties and how it can affect home owners and buyers in the market.

In my professional opinion, mortgage penalties are the most important feature of a mortgage that one needs to consider. I feel that most home buyers are not being educated enough on how mortgage penalties work and how it may affect their future. Every lender and every mortgage product has different penalty structures, it’s my job to inform you of them. With the recent decline in the housing market over the past few years one might be looking to break the mortgage term. If this happens you may have to pay out of pocket, just to walk away. I’ve had a client call me this year who had to come up with $16,000 after he sold his home just to cover his prepayment penalties. This is why all home buyers should be utilizing an independently licensed mortgage professional like myself.

There are three insurers in Canada, all three of them, like the lenders, have different lending guidelines and policies to adhere to. What are the down payment requirements for your first purchase, when owning multiple properties or revenue properties?

Whether it’s your first, second or third time buying an owner-occupied home you are only required to put down a minimum of 5%. This includes your primary residence, vacation home or a property for an immediate family member. Non owner-occupied purchases require a minimum of 20% down, such as a rental.

Borrowers who are new to Canada are required to put down anywhere from 5% to 35% depending on residency, credit, and job history.

Can you explain to me what mortgage default insurance is?

Mortgage default insurance protects the lender if your mortgage goes into default. Borrowers pay a premium for mortgage default

funfetti cookies A party would not be complete without sprinkles, and these Funfetti Cookies are an excellent addition to your next party’s dessert table. Have you ever tried adding a pudding mix to cookie dough? You end up with soft, chewy cookies packed full of flavour!

When placing these cookies on the cookie sheet, make sure you space them at least two inches apart from each other as they do grow quite a bit. This recipe makes two dozen large cookies.

For sprinkles, I use the Cake Mate sprinkles from McCormick Canada. The last time I checked, this brand of sprinkles is nut-free, so they’d be safe for a classroom party.

Ingredients: •

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

•

½ cup sugar

•

2 eggs

•

1 cup all-purpose flour

•

1 package (4-serving size) instant vanilla pudding mix

•

1 teaspoon baking soda

•

2-3 tablespoons of sprinkles

Directions: 1.

Preheat oven to 350F.

2.

Beat butter and sugar together until creamy.

3.

Add eggs and beat well.

4.

Add flour, pudding and baking soda and beat until well mixed.

5.

Stir in sprinkles.

6.

Add cookies (two tablespoon size per cookie) onto greased cookie sheet.

7.

Bake for 10-12 minutes (until cookies brown on the bottom).

8.

Let cool on cookie sheet before removing to baking rack to cool.
