Making the Best of the Worst

In entrepreneurship, as in life, the ability to adapt to and embrace change is a critical skill. Dani Rubin, owner and operator of Renew Disaster Cleanup and Restoration (http://www.renewdisastercleanup.com/), learned this from a young age. She has since put this skill to work for her, securing her post as the first female restoration company owner in Canada.

“Growing up, we moved around a ton,” says Rubin, who spent time at over 16 schools during the course of her childhood. “I learned to be a leader, not a follower, and to adapt to change.”

Additionally, frequent moves required her to constantly meet and befriend new people. This ability to be both personable and relatable is not only something Rubin embodies with tremendous ease, but it is also one of her company’s core values. According to Rubin, her vision for Renew was to establish a business whose focus was on customer satisfaction. The company’s slogan – ‘Making the Best of the Worst’ – is an appropriate reflection of that goal. “[My family] had a fire when I was a kid and I will never forget it,” she says. “Something like that changes your whole life and

As a kid, I was forced to reinvent myself constantly, and I built that kind of flexibility and adaptability into my business.”

Nine months later, the company – which began as a crew of four with three fans, a dehumidifier, and a truck with a utility trailer – is fast becoming the leading responder throughout southern Saskatchewan for residential wind, water, fire and reconstruction insurance claims. Renew now employs 27 staff members and boasts a fleet of 20 trucks, 6 trailers and over 140 fans and dehumidifiers.

“We started with a truck and a goal,” says Rubin, who oversees the company’s finances, marketing and advertising. “The business has really blossomed since last summer and it has been a fantastic experience so far. As a company, we know how to adapt and I believe this – along with our ability to find the right people for the job – has made all the difference for us.”

Rubin, who calls Weyburn home with her fiancé, Darcy, was motivated to launch a restoration business following a series of floods and subsequent sewer back-ups last spring that ravaged the homes of many, including her own. She was discouraged to discover a lack of businesses whose services were clientfocused, consistent and accountable.

“I was in my rubber boots in the basement, pumping water because there was no one to call,” she says. “This got me thinking, ‘Okay, enough is enough. There has got to be a better way to handle situations like this.’”

Ever a perceptive individual, Rubin recognized that the time was right to design a solution for this prevalent, identified need. Pairing her strong interpersonal skills and business sense with her fiancé’s industry experience, the two officially registered Renew Disaster Cleanup and Restoration in July 2014.

“Unlike most industries, in ours we don’t want repeat business,” says Rubin. “Good enough is not good enough for us. We believe in doing things right the first time and a major part of that is investing in a quality team.”

A firm believer in education and professional development, Rubin arranges monthly, company-wide training sessions to keep staff apprised of emerging industry trends, challenges and technologies. An important element here is creating awareness about the interplay of different trades in order to successfully complete a job.

Rubin also strives to maintain an active, caring corporate culture through the provision of an attractive benefits plan and countless developmental opportunities for all staff. Ultimately, her intent is not to serve as a “job stop” on someone’s resume, but rather to offer an attractive, long-term career opportunities for qualified, quality trades people.

Rubin’s fiancé – who serves as Renew’s office manager – shared a particularly poignant example of the team’s commitment to unsurpassed customer service. In this instance, a deaf couple contacted Renew for assistance with a sewer back-up in their home. This request prompted the team to devise a creative solution that would honour the company’s commitment to clear and open communication.

“It was challenging,” he concedes. “Between our team lead, office staff and project managers, we all communicated exclusively

via text – even in face-to-face situations. With our team, though, we always deal with what’s been laid out for us; we are prepared to rise to the occasion. In this case, the project turned out great because everyone worked together.”

The couple was so impressed with their experience they provided a glowing referral (accessible on Renew’s website) wherein they describe the company as “honest, professional, [and] reliable.” These sentiments are shared by many others who have enlisted the services of this growing, local business.

As with any new start-up, Rubin did acknowledge certain “growing pains” – a need for an additional truck or staff member, for example – but went on to explain that that she and her fiancé’s complementary skill sets have allowed them to maintain the company’s momentum and take on progressively larger, more complex contracts without issue or concern.

With Renew’s first birthday only a few short months away, Rubin remains as passionate about the company’s mission and goal as she was at its inception. She spoke enthusiastically about the sense of accomplishment and reward she and the rest of her team derive by restoring a sense of security and safety to individuals and families around the province. Key to this is recognizing the emotional impact that disasters such as roof destruction, water damage and fire can have on a home’s residents, and approaching situations with a respect, empathy and pragmatism.

call 24/7: to help people feel that relief is on the horizon, despite disruption and loss.”

From an entrepreneurial standpoint, Rubin has found the process of starting a business from scratch equal parts exhilarating and challenging. So much so, in fact, that she launched Renew Realty Inc. – Renew Disaster Cleanup and Restoration’s sister company – in January 2015. Rubin obtained her real estate license in 2001 and has maintained strong ties to the industry, even through the rapid, impressive growth of her restoration company. For her, it seemed a natural progression to add real estate brokerage to her growing roster of service offerings.

“Whether you’re buying a home or you’re dealing with an inhome disaster, it’s important to find someone you know you can trust,” says Rubin. “This is especially so for women. I was once a single mother, so I can empathize with feeling uncertain about what to do and who to turn to.”

The volume of change for Rubin and her fiancé is undeniable, but the couple pride themselves on a shared ability to be realistic and strategic in planning for the company’s future. Rubin made sure to speak to the importance of taking time away from work to con-

nect with loved ones and allowing oneself to rest and recharge.

“It’s not easy,” says Rubin of owning and operating a business.

“Having your own business is a large responsibility; you have to be prepared to take it seriously and be willing to give up a lot to take something like this on. However, the biggest reward for us is the stability and future we are creating – for our customers, our staff, our kids and ourselves.”

The Saskatoon Interval House Fundraiser at Visions Salon and Spa

The Saskatoon Interval House is an emergency, temporary shelter for women and children who require safe accommodation.

Tickets will be sold at Visions Salon for $30 and The Interval house will be receiving 100% of the proceeds. Along with your ticket you will receive a $25 gift certificate towards any future hair service at Visions.

Residents of Interval House have been forced to leave violent relationships for their own safety and for the safety of their children. The Interval House offers accommodation, counseling, referral and advocacy to those in need of support. Crisis calls and information are also an integral part of the service they provide to the community.

Although it seems we experience winter for most of our year, the promise of spring is just around the corner. With the season synonymous with new beginnings, come fresh new looks.

Typically we expect pastels and light hues, but for spring 2015 there were a few surprises. From barely there makeup to a classic dark smoky eye to pops of bold colour, it seems anything goes this year.

At Dolce & Gabbana lips were berry stained with diffused edges for a soft finish and bold statement. With a nude eye and full lash, this gorgeous look can even be worn during the day.

Donna Karan did a beautiful monochromatic look with cool taupes on both the lips and eyes, for a modern version of a brown eye. Skin was luminous, and brows were full and natural.

This is and will always be one of my favourite looks. It’s a barely there look that focuses on pretty skin and natural beauty.

Tory Burch captured this look wonderfully with an enhanced brow.

Derek Lam demonstrated that a smoky eye is a technique and not a colour as a lot of people may think. A smoky eye can be done in any colour and he showcased this with pretty lavender.

Tom Ford nailed a traditional black smoky eye for an edgy and sexy look. With drama like this, a nude lip makes it more wearable.

These are some common misconceptions that come to mind when we see others we compare ourselves to, doing ‘life’ better than us.

Reality check - It’s ok to have moments of doubt and to want the best life for yourself. But, do not want your best life in spite of someone else, or judge other’s best life as a result of nothing less than hard work. We do not have control over anyone’s situation but our own.

Money, beauty, fit bodies, confidence … this all takes work. Envy is not a good look on anyone. Realize that there is enough room in this world for us all to be successful. The success and happiness come when you stop paying attention to the noise and images everyone around you is trying to sell. You become your most successful self and start living your healthiest lifestyle.

So Holly, how do we stop dieting and start living?

The answer is easy: We stop dieting and we START LIVING! Unfortunately, we associate looking our best with success, celebrations and trips. We want to look good, wear the trending fashions or rock a bikini.

We usually see our best selves as a thinner/smaller size. With this perceived ‘success’, others will often congratulate you on shrinking a size or two and ask you for advice so they too can achieve this same ‘success’.

It’s unfortunate that visually we succeed to others first and the thought of FEELING our best comes second. Don’t get me wrong, compliments give everyone swagger and help us move on with our days in a positive manner, carrying that energy forward. But to set ourselves apart from the sprint (body first) and set ourselves up for lifestyle (consistency – mind, heart and body), our achievements must start internally. A healthy mind and heart result in a strong, confident and beautiful body that will carry you forward through every new adventure that comes your way. You see, when we solely set a goal for our body, we set ourselves up for short-term results, but do not educate ourselves for long term success.

Why the sprint (body first) is not conducive to living our healthiest lifestyle (consistency – mind heart and body): Body first – usually weight loss. We set the goal when we book the trip/celebration/summer is upon us, usually 2-3 months. We train torturously, slave to a diet – which, by the way, diet is always temporary – to achieve the goal or close to it – months go by and we are either at or close to goal, but it is irrelevant because the trip or occasion is upon us and we are excited to spend the next week ruining the foundation we have just laid.

Most of us don’t realize that ignorance is not bliss, and months of hard work can and will be ruined if you choose to forego everything you have worked for leading up to it. We usually justify our holiday actions with memories of fitness torture and months of starvation. Then, holiday actions usually mean celebrating by going off plan, eating and drinking whatever we want for a week straight and never seeing the inside of the hotel gym. The only time we exert ourselves tends to be with a swim up to the pool bar for a refill.

Ummm … was it worth it? Saying goodbye to all healthy habits that got you to your ‘bikini body’ for a week is like celebrating sobriety by getting drunk. Hypocritical if you ask me. When we chose to face reality and start our fitness routine again, we usually feel as though we have failed. All torture is forever linked with fitness and dieting and all fun times are linked with ignorance and vacation. Another reality check. We do not live on vacation, nor should we want to associate happiness with reckless behavior.

How do we stop this cycle?

To stop the sprint for results with the reward of ruin, set yourself up for a consistent lifestyle of health and happiness and living this life to its fullest!

Set the goal to live your healthiest lifestyle. Start realizing your own goals and achievements and enjoying your hard work paying off for life.

Stop dieting 4-6 times out of the year with periods of ignorance, causing havoc to your health in the long run, and setting yourself up for a harder road to success the next time you decide to commit.

Get used to temptation. If you choose to see these things as tempting, you will subconsciously tell yourself that you want what you can’t have … but do you really want it?

Decide what it is you want out of yourself.

Change your mindset to change your life by asking yourself the right questions: What in your life is great right now?

The other morning I was upset with the weather and when I walked out to the kitchen and expressed my look of disappointment to my husband, he instantly said, “You are not asking yourself the right questions. What in your life is great right now?” Although this is not what I wanted to hear, it made me think positively and absolutely.

Why cry about the things that are not in our control? Choose to focus on the great and by doing this, you continue to make great things happen. It is your choice.

What in your life is hindering your success?

To succeed in change, we must clear out the distractions, the temptations, the things we allow to get in our way when we are venturing for success. Take control of what is in your life and set yourself up for success.

What do I want?

This is a big one. Your actions today must align with the results you want. You will not fail if you choose to succeed. Your success may look different than originally forecasted, but you always succeed in progressing towards what you were meant to receive.

Am I prepared to accept success?

Resentment is a form of guilt felt when potential is not realized.

Your success may result in resentment from others. You must prepare yourself for this. Accept this and do not apologize for your success. Wish success to others and move forward.

One day I was listening to inspirational talks on my soundcloud while doing a headstand and I’m not sure if the fact that I was upside down is the reason this quote has stuck with me - “All hate is formed from unrealized potential.” This is so true! We are all where we are supposed to be at this exact moment, to choose change and to move in a positive direction, we must accept responsibility and act positively. We are all capable of realizing our potential. It’s as simple as that!

So here are your quick fixes to rock a banging body, a beautiful smile, a positive attitude and a successful life for days and years to come. The truth is there is nothing quick about them. They take work, consistency and confidence but are achievable to everyone who chooses to accept them whenever and wherever that may be:

Clear the clutter.

Accept responsibility Educate yourself on how you feel when you achieve.

When we live our healthiest in mind, heart and body, our transformations become so much more than the self-deprivation leading to inches or weight lost where we achieve a number and reward ourselves with gluttony and ignorance.

Once you answer the above, do not try to accomplish this lifestyle alone; it takes a team. Do not ask for acceptance, demand support by making this decision for you and not expecting it to be easy. There will be bad days, there will be weak days, there will be self-doubt, and there will be external doubt.

You can overcome anything you choose to if you decide that you are worth it.

The best decision I made was to stop taking everything into my own hands. I started working with my mhbcoach at www.mhbworld.com and found out how effective it is to work with someone that has my best interests in mind and who has and continues to educate me on living life! We continue to discover what it means for me to achieve anything I want and to live my life as though it is a new adventure every day! I love this lifestyle and every accomplishment, achievement and ability to inspire that comes along with living it. I stopped thinking that I did not deserve it, I stopped asking for acceptance, I started believing I was capable and I know that whatever my day throws my way, I can get through it on the sunny side of it. I carry this forward and wish it to you.

I know you may have thought this article would be a ‘how to’ on what to eat to get fit and ripped and to lose the belly fat, but the truth to living your best is accepting the ability to educate yourself, to use the resources available to all of us and to start acting responsibly. The information is out there and we are all privy to the knowledge of what living ‘our healthiest’ means to each and every one of us.

EVERYDAY HERo DiONNE WARNER On Friday morning, January 16th, 2015 Graham Warner paid tribute to his wife’s cancer fight in a creative and dramatic fashion.

While some might of wondered if it was a marketing gimmick, Warner has long shown his support for Dionne and her incredible cancer battle with uninhibited love, flair and passion. It’s pretty well become something of the couple’s trademark.

Warner, owner of Warner Industries, a multi-branch Saskatchewan heavy and medium duty Freightliner Truck dealership business; a Saskatchewan and Manitoba Thomas School Bus dealership business; a student pupil and hospital staff transportation company serving the Regina Public School Board and Qu’Appelle Health Region respectfully; a National Lease Rental and Leasing company; a Saskatchewan multi-branch Doepker Trailer dealer; and finally a towing and rescue company, found that he needed to add a new rescue tow truck to his fleet.

buy him a new tow truck and it likely would be the biggest, most powerful tow truck in the province.” Graham explains, “Now I need to add some information here, there are a lot of heavy duty tow operators out there that will never see a brand new rig in their lifetime, so you can imagine how happy my operator was to hear this?”

He let the news sink in for a few minutes and then told him, “And the truck is going to be pink.” Well, the operator could not hide his discomfort with the idea of driving a big pink tow truck. Graham had to counsel him for months as the unit was being built by telling him that he would be a hero out there. He went on to assure him that he would receive more positive response from the public then he would know what to do with and guaranteed, no one would laugh at him driving a pink tow truck!

This time though, he wanted to make a powerful public statement with the half million-dollar asset addition.

At the unveiling, Dionne, an 8 – time cancer survivor to some of the most lethal cancers out there, christened the truck built in her honour and named, ‘Warrior of the Ribbon’ with a bottle of champagne and dedicated it to all cancer survivors.

D.” After surviving breast cancer at the age of 29, and then brain cancer a couple years later, she enjoyed three years of complete remission. Then in 2001, she was diagnosed with liver cancer. They removed 51% of her liver and she underwent chemotherapy for six months. It looked like she would enjoy another good spell of remission however that prediction didn’t last long. The liver cancer returned to the original portion of her liver a year later and that time 38% of her liver was removed followed with chemotherapy yet again.

Fortunately the liver rejuvenates itself under these conditions and Dionne beat the cancer back into remission and continued living life at full throttle.

In 2009, Dionne and Graham were devastated with the diagnoses that the cancer had returned for the 4th time, this time rated at stage 4-palliative in her bones, lungs and liver.

Their devastation only lasted a short time though and they got back to their uniquely positive high-spirited attitude. For that first day of chemo, Dionne wore war paint on her face and a bright fuchsia t-shirt that quoted, “Cancer Sucks,” clearly showing she was ready to fight the disease yet again and do it with gusto!

The American Cancer Society even recognized there was something special about Dionne and about a year after the stage 4 diagnosis, named her one of their International Heroes of Hope for 2011/2012.

Dionne, already declared a medical miracle by her doctors for beating breast, brain and two separate bouts of liver cancer, miraculously again, put that stage 4 cancer diagnosis that was growing in so many parts of her body into complete remission in early 2012. “I think we went into shock for a week over that great news” says Graham. Unfortunately the remission only lasted 7 ½ months this time and it came back into her liver for the 4th separate time. She’s been undergoing chemotherapy ever since.

“When I look at Dionne’s slim little body and think, 130 sessions of cell killing chemotherapy has been poured into it since 2009, and she has never complained even when her mouth and throat were covered internally with sores, (a side effect of chemo) or that she doesn’t even let the nausea slow her down, it just humbles me as to her true strength and spirit,” her very-in-love husband says.

And that spirit is radiated right back at her by friends who often bid the couple, “Have fun at chemo!”

Both Graham and Dionne take great pride in entertaining and creating a positive attitude in other cancer patients and nursing staff with their colorful costumes, t-shirts, music and dancing when they go into the chemo ward once a week, two times a month. Since that December 2009 diagnosis, they have dressed up to attend 130 chemo sessions.

“I want people to know that there is life before, during and after cancer. My first husband said, that nobody would want me, that I was damaged goods,” Dionne shares. She now laughs at that, happily married to her second husband, her wingman, Graham. Even while Dionne undergoes treatment she motivationally speaks and inspires many audiences.

This February, she will be featured as the face of the Beauty Gives Back; a worldwide campaign being launched to address the psychological devastating symptoms many cancer patients and survivors experience.

Closer to home, Graham explains his vision for the massive pink rescue truck like this: “When there is a devastating wreck involving either one or multiple commercial vehicles, and this big, pink, powerful, Warrior of the Ribbon shows up to help sort things out and make things better, it will signify there is hope; that there is strength in that hope. And if others even just see the Warrior towing a disabled vehicle, it will signify that things will be better down the road.”

With 170,000 pounds of winching power, and the unique ability to upright a complete truck and trailer unit without blocking the highway, there is no doubt that this 2015 Warrior of the Ribbon will live up to its namesake. Just don’t debate which Warrior is tougher!

Why You’ll Be Happier in a Smaller Home or Cottage I am surprised with how frequently I hear how people are thrilled with smaller. It’s a comment I hear over and over again.

Limiting your house size to what you need is going to reap you some very nice benefits.

The reason people keep buying bigger and bigger homes is because no one tells them not to. The mantra of the culture again comes calling, “buy as much and as big as possible.” People believe the lie and choose to buy a large home only because that’s “what you are supposed to do” when you start making money… you buy nice, big stuff.

Here are some reasons you may actually be happier in a smaller house:

• EASIER TO MAINTAIN. Anyone who has owned a house knows the amount of time, energy and effort to maintain it. All things being equal, a smaller home requires less of your time, energy, and effort to accomplish that task.

• CHEAPER TO FURNISH. If you’ve got six bedrooms and four baths, you’re going to have a lot more furniture to keep your home looking lived in. Fewer rooms mean less furniture and decorations leading to fewer expenses.

• LESS TIME SPENT CLEANING. This should be reason enough …

• LESS EXPENSIVE. Smaller homes are less expensive to

purchase and less expensive to keep (insurance, taxes, heating, cooling, electricity, etc.).

LESS TEMPTATION TO ACCUMULATE. If you don’t have any room in your house for that new treadmill, you’ll be less tempted to buy it in the first place.

LESS DECORATING. While some people love the idea of choosing wall colour, carpet colour, furniture, window treatments, decorations and light fixtures for dozens of rooms, I don’t.

WIDER MARKET TO SELL. By its very definition, a smaller, affordable house is more affordable to a larger percentage of the population than a more expensive one.

LOWER PROPERTY TAXES.

1 (12 inch) pre-baked pizza crust 1/2 cup barbecue sauce 1/2 cup diced grilled chicken 1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper 1/4 cup chopped red onion 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1 (18 oz) package refrigerated sugar cookie dough 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened 1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed 2 cups sliced fresh strawberries 1/2 cup white sugar 1 pinch salt 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1/2 cup orange juice 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/4 cup water 1/2 teaspoon orange zest

3/4 cup dry red lentils 1 1/2 cups water 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 small onion, chopped 1/2 small eggplant, diced 1 (1 pound) sweet potato, cubed 1 (14.5 ounce) can Italian-style diced tomatoes, undrained 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 1/2 teaspoons curry powder 1 tablespoon ground cumin salt and pepper to taste 1 (12 inch) thin prebaked whole wheat pizza crust 1/4 cup grated Romano cheese

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).

2. Place pizza crust on cookie sheet.

Spread with barbecue sauce. Scatter chicken over top. Sprinkle evenly with red pepper, green pepper and onion.

Cover with cheese.

3. Bake in preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until cheese is melted.

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Slice cookie dough and arrange on greased pizza pan, overlapping edges. Press dough flat into pan. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Allow to cool.

2. In a large bowl, soften cream cheese, then fold in the whipped topping. Spread over cooled crust.

3. Arrange fruit of your choice in a circle around the outside edge. If bananas are used, dip them in lemon juice so they don’t darken.

4. In a saucepan, combine sugar, salt, corn starch, orange juice, lemon juice and water. Cook and stir over medium heat. Bring to a boil, and cook for 1 or 2 minutes, until thickened. Remove from heat, and add grated orange rind. Allow to cool, but not set up. Spoon over fruit.

Chill for two hours, then cut into wedges and serve.

Directions: 1. Combine the lentils and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer over low heat for about 20 minutes, or until tender. Drain, and set aside.

2. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Spray a pizza pan with nonstick cooking spray.

3. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.

Stir in garlic and onions; cook until soft and slightly browned. Stir in eggplant and sweet potato. Pour in about 1/2 cup of liquid from canned tomatoes. Simmer until juices are absorbed.

4. Stir in tomatoes, ginger, curry powder, cumin, salt, and pepper; simmer until sweet potato begins to soften, about 15 to 20 minutes. (If juices cook off before potatoes are fully cooked, stir in a small amount of water, and cover.)

5. Place pizza crust on pizza pan. Spread the lentils evenly across the surface of the crust out to the edges. Spread sweet potato mixture evenly on top, and sprinkle with cheese.

6. Bake in a preheated oven until the edges are browned, about 10 to 13 minutes.

Serve immediately.

1 pita bread round 1 teaspoon olive oil 3 tablespoons pizza sauce 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1/4 cup sliced crimini mushrooms 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Puree cauliflower in a food processor until finely ground.

3. Cook ground cauliflower, water, and salt together in a skillet over mediumhigh heat until fragrant and most of the water evaporates, 5 to 6 minutes. Cool completely.

4. Transfer cauliflower to the center of a clean dish towel. Wrap and squeeze tightly to remove all excess moisture. You should have about 1 1/2 cups cauliflower pulp.

5. Stir cauliflower, goat cheese, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, egg, and cayenne pepper together in a bowl to form a soft dough. Gather dough into a ball and place in the center of the prepared baking sheet. Press dough into circle about 1/4inch thick.

6. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown and set, about 40 minutes. Cool and turn crust over before topping.

3. Lightly oil grill grate. Place pita pizza on grill, cover, and cook until cheese completely melts, about 5 minutes.

Transfer crust to a lightly greased pizza pan or baker’s peel dusted with cornmeal. Spread with desired toppings and bake in preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Let baked pizza cool for 5 minutes before serving.

BLUE SKIES AND ROCK

A lot of people go to Phoenix. I’ve heard some nice things about it. It’s warm, easy to get to, affordable and of course for the sports lover is a mecca of entertainment. I had never seriously considered going there because I didn’t think there was enough to interest me. An invite from friends to stay with them this winter changed my mind.

I am big on first impressions. Although our luggage was hopelessly lost I couldn’t help but take notice of the endless blue skies above our vacation home in Maricopa, about 30 minutes south of Phoenix. They reminded me of the perfect Saskatchewan summer, where azure skies seem to last forever. Ten days proved long enough in this case but it was certainly something I could get used to.

The family we went with is a bit atypical. They care little about sports but love being outside. In fact, they are always on the move, and so that kept us always on the move. It was a good thing and our children couldn’t have been happier. The first few days were spent playing basketball and dusting off the scooters and last year’s tricks, as well as a spring batting practise and shagging pop flies. These were warmups for our main trip focus: rock climbing.

ing up smack in the middle of the prairies but rest assured there is a small but enthusiastic group of climbers in Saskatchewan.

Fortunately my friend Ethan is one of them and was our guide.

While my sons climb weekly in a bouldering gym I can confidently say I would be described as a ‘noob’. Our party of two adults and five children ranging in age from 3 to 12, set off for our first climb of the trip to Pinnacle Peak near Scottsdale.

I had pegged Arizona as a flat desert with a few cactuses however; the area surrounding Phoenix is scenic with mountains surrounding most of the city. Pinnacle Peak is an in-city jewel that serves up an impressive hiking trail and some nice climbing. After a 10-minute hike we left the trail to scramble up to higher ground and my excitement began to grow.

Our first climbing test was Varicose on the AMC Boulder, a 5.6 rated 70’ crack, which was more than enough of a challenge for people who hadn’t been on rock before. Ethan climbed to the top with me belaying him to establish a top rope, which is a very effective and safe method to use for beginners to climb.

Beyond the rock, the additional challenge was in keeping children away from the edge of the cliff we were perched on. Not impossible but it certainly keeps you focused to ensure it’s a fun and safe day. The climb proved to be a big hit with the kids and snacks and lunch up on the mountain proved a swell way

to spend a day.

Several things became very clear to me at the end of the day.

My fear of heights was still very present and constantly reminded me about self-preservation, which I might add is not helpful when trying to climb. It was also abundantly clear, my nine-year-old son Kai found something that he really excelled at. After Ethan, he was our best climber and he was sending every route the first time with no falls.

At sunup we were off to the Oak Flats region of Queen Creek Canyon near the town of Superior for another day of rock. It took some effort to find but we were rewarded with a stunningly beautiful and peaceful spot. About a dozen other climbers were in the area but it’s an expansive space and more than enough rock for everyone. Another fabulous Arizona day meant we could relax and enjoy ourselves. We climbed all day and everyone had great success, in large part to Ethan’s careful route selection and the boyish need to climb and not be bested by your brother. Or your children.

Climbing really brought out the best in everyone that day and we tested our mettle until near dusk, maximizing what had been for most of us, a day to remember. It was just so different than anything we had ever done. Frightening yet exhilarating at the same time. Tears flowed a few times when fear crept into children’s heads but they would get right back to climbing in only a few minutes. Amazing.

My climbing success was pretty muted. I had become a confident belayer. But confident climber not so much. On the last climb of the day I asked Ethan if he thought that I could make it. His reply was “I think if you don’t give it a try you are going to really wonder about it for a long time.” No way that I could walk away. I gave it my desperation best and fortunately that was enough to top out. I am positive I received low style marks, but it was enough to bring a boyish smile to my face.

Hiking is our family’s true love and with the Grand Canyon so close we took a two day road trip to the scenic and beautiful red rock town of Sedona to act as home base. We spent a day on a spectacular hike to a natural arch and a nice picnic lunch on a ledge with never-ending vista, where we were treated to several climbers rappelling down a massive butte.

The following day a trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon took vistas to a whole new level. Photos can’t capture the endless views and colours of a canyon that averages ten miles across. We are a family of picnickers so lunch on a canyon ledge and several hours of hiking on the South Kaibab trail to Ooh Aah Point was the perfect end to the trip.

Arizona delivered more than I could have expected. Importantly, it enabled us to spend a lot of quality time together, just having fun. Lots of memories made, new limits tested, and achievements realized. You are capable of a lot more than you know. We liked the blue skies, loved the rock and have a new friend in Arizona.

Are You an “Efficient” Investor?

Invest systematically If you put a few dollars in an investment, such as a stock, that you heard was “hot,” and then a few months later put some more money in another vehicle that strikes your fancy, and you continue this pattern indefinitely, you may not be maximizing your resources. By taking this type of haphazard approach, you could end up owning a bunch of investments without rhyme or reason — a motley assortment that may not help you reach your goals.

Instead of following this route, consider a systematic approach, sometimes known as dollar cost averaging. To do so, you’ll first want to identify some investments that are appropriate for your objectives, risk tolerance and time horizon. Then, automatically move the same amount of money each month from your chequing or savings account into the investments you’ve chosen.

When the price of your investments falls, your contribution will buy more shares, and when the price rises, you’ll buy fewer shares — in other words, you’ll be fulfilling the “buy low” part of the classic investment formula.

Over time, this technique should result in a lower average cost per investment. Keep in mind, though, that dollar cost averaging does not ensure a profit or protect against loss — and you’ll need to have the financial resources available to continue investing, even in “down” markets.

Reinvest dividends Among your investments, you may own stocks that can pay dividends. You can take these dividends as cash, but if you don’t need the money to meet everyday expenses, you may be better off by reinvesting the dividends.

This is an efficient way to increase your shares — and boosting your share ownership in quality investments can be a key way to help build wealth. (Be aware that companies can increase, decrease or discontinue dividends at any time.)

Look for tax-efficient techniques Another type of efficiency associated with investing is tax efficiency, 5535ability to defer taxes as long as possible. Consolidate investment accounts If you have one RRSP with one financial services provider, another with a second, and a separate investment account with a third, you may end up paying more in expenses, fees and commissions than is necessary — and since these costs can eat into your investments’ “real” rate of return, this scattershot ownership method may be inefficient. You may be better off by Black consolidating all your investment accounts with one provider.

Seek to become an efficient investor. You may be pleased with the results.

GLOWING DANCE PARTY From toddlers to teens, everyone appreciates a good dance party. There are so many fun ideas to customize this theme for all ages. I’m actually planning a Rockin’ Dance Party for my son’s fourth birthday this year because he always seems to be dancing. This theme is a high-energy party that will leave the guests dancing and singing along. You’ll want to have a big buffet table of snacks to fuel all that energy needed for dancing.

A fun idea for an invitation is to create something that looks like a ticket to an exclusive event. If your party has a rock star portion to it, these could be made to look like VIP Backstage Passes.

Here are some fun snack ideas: • candy like Pop Rocks, rock candy • cake pops made to look like microphones • candy buffet with bright coloured candies • cupcakes in neon wrappers • bottles of pop with neon paper straws

• cute takeout boxes filled with leftover treats from the party

• cookies with bright candy-coated chocolates • cookies shaped like musical notes • popcorn, chips or pretzels served in neon snack bags • plastic mini dessert cups with cake and pudding • mini donuts • cotton candy

The great thing about dance-themed parties is you don’t really have to keep the party moving with planned games. The dancing keeps the guests entertained throughout the party but you may need to show off your fancy dance moves to get the party started. Now you just have to pick your music - 80’s retro, popular soundtracks from movies, the latest teen idols, top music charts, or the latest children’s entertainers. I hope you have a rockin’ party!
