Caution is king when it comes to winter driving (BPT) - With the winter in full swing, ensuring your tires - the last line of defense between your vehicle and harsh conditions are in working order may be the difference between an enjoyable or stressful travel season. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 17% of all vehicle collisions take place during winter conditions, many of which can be attributed to underinflated, over-worn or out-of-season tires. “Being on the side of the road due to a preventable vehicle issue is both inconvenient and dangerous,” said Brandon Sturgis, product manager, BFGoodrich Tires. “Before winter arrives, make sure that your car is in its best condition to handle winter weather.” Below are a few simple tips from BFGoodrich Tires to help ensure your vehicle and tires are better prepared for safe driving this winter. Tire pressure will change with the weather Many drivers neglect their tires until it’s too late and experience a tire issue, an inconvenience that only increases during the winter months. To avoid a winter accident caused by unsafe tires, drivers should proactively take measures to maintain their tires. An easy first step is to check the air pressure of all four tires at least monthly. This is especially important during the colder winter months as a drop in temperatures can cause tire pressures to decrease below a vehicle’s recommended inflation levels. To find the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure, look at the decal in the driver’s door jamb or in the owner’s manual. Checking your tread should be routine Many drivers try squeezing as much life out of their tires as

12

Compass Magazine

possible and run them even after the tread has worn below 2/32 of an inch - the minimum tread deemed safe under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. If this is you, be sure to stay honest about checking your tread. To do so, find a penny and insert Abraham Lincoln headfirst into the lowest tread on your tire. If any portion of Abe’s head is covered, your tread depth is sufficient. If Honest Abe is still fully visible, your tread is below 2/32 of an inch and the ability to perform in wet and winter conditions is substantially reduced. The importance of seasonal tires Understanding your driving environment is as important as understanding which tires best suit your circumstances. Geography is the most intuitive factor playing into one’s driving environment, but certain locations create a more nuanced experience. Do you know which tires are best for your situation? For example, all-terrain tires such as the BFGoodrich AllTerrain T/A KO2 are suitable year-round tires designed to give you superior grip both off and on the pavement thanks to innovative tread design, tough sidewalls and long-lasting durability. If you drive in an environment that is regularly below freezing with snow and ice, winter tires may be your best choice. For those yet to treat their vehicle to winter tires during the cold months, consider the BFGoodrich Winter T/A KSI a good starting point. Offering extreme traction in winter conditions and reassuring steering control and durability, your next set of winter tires may keep you from becoming another winter driving collision statistic. “Tires play a key role in your winter weather mobility. Knowing what kind of tires you have on your car and knowing their condition are part of being prepared,” says Sturgis.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEK BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU

• Consumer & business education

CLEANING YOUR AIR DUCTS Don’t fall for air duct salespeople telling you your system needs regular cleaning and mold control. Doing so could result in you paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a service that is not really necessary. Every home is different, so it really is up to the homeowner to determine if their air ducts need cleaning, but most maintenance can be done with a regular household vacuum, or shop vac for bigger particles or buildup. But sometimes professional servicing is needed. Look for these signs that your air ducts could use a deep clean: • Visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts or on other parts of your heating and cooling system (especially if there has been water damage in the home) • Ducts infested with vermin • Ducts clogged with large amounts of dust and debris (i.e., in newly constructed homes or after a major renovation) • Particles entering your home from your supply registers

to hire. Do not let a contractor insist you need a chemical treatment for mold unless the company can show you proof of mold or other contamination. Something might look like mold, but only an expert will know for sure and may need lab tests to do so. Be wary of any company proposing the use of disinfectants or biocide. Under Canada’s Pest Control Products Act, no such products have been approved for use in the home and broadcast spraying is unacceptable. Ask the contractor if they have cleaned a system like yours before you sign a service contract, and ask to be presented with references that you can investigate. Avoid “blow-and-go” companies who charge a low fee and then do a poor job. This can be worse than a full cleaning because it can kick up particles or damage your system. The contractor should perform a visual inspection after the cleaning is complete. This can be done by using access panels in the duct work or using a flexible cable camera.

What to look for in an air duct service contractor There are no duct cleaning standards to certify, endorse or approve air duct cleaning companies. Top 5 tax tips you need to know (NC) Tax filing can be complicated, and this year provincial and federal governments have introduced many changes that can only add to the confusion. To help, here are five ways to confidently manage the filing process. 1. Take note of key dates. Whether you owe money or not, it’s important to file your taxes on time to avoid the interruption of benefits, interest and any penalties. The CRA can charge you penalties of 5 per cent on what you owe, plus an additional 1 per cent for each month you fail to file, for a maximum of 12 months. “To avoid the stress of filing last-minute, use your phone to set up reminders to flag important tax-related dates,” suggests Lisa Gittens, tax expert at H&R Block. 2. Stay organized. Ensure you gather all forms, slips and necessary receipts throughout the year. Organize everything you need to file your return, such as tuition receipts, medical bills by category and date and file them away. You can also take photos of hardcopy receipts and add these to your online folder as well, making it much easier if you must look back months, or even

years, later. 3. G et some credit for being kind. If you, your spouse or your common-law partner made a charitable donation, you might be able to claim a non-refundable tax credit for your generosity. When completing your return, not only can you claim the donations you made during the year, you can also claim any unclaimed donation amounts from the past five years. 4. Crunch numbers with a tax calculator. It’s never a bad idea to get an idea of what your tax situation might look like ahead of time. “Take advantage of free tax calculators to help you get a sense of what you’ll be walking into come tax season,” says Gittens. All you need to do is enter your income, taxes paid and RRSPs – and remember the March 2 deadline for RRSPs. 5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If figuring out where to start or which receipts to keep organized is too much, ask for a hand. Gather your receipts and documents and speak to a tax expert who can answer any questions you may have.
