Your COMPAS Impact Report Fiscal Year 2017

Every day...

...we hear from people who have experienced the amazing creativity energy that our Teaching Artist’s bring. People across Minnesota are inspired to reach new levels of ingenuity and creativity. But you know what inspires us every day? You. Without your gifts, none of this would be possible. You inspired Sara, a young girl experiencing a health crisis at Children’s Hospital, to create something that would give her comfort and confidence during the difficult times ahead. You inspired Ben, a student in Roseau, Minnesota (population 2,754) to experience new cultures and broaden his horizons. You inspired Rose, a woman living in an older adult facility, to make new friends while sharing some of her precious memories. You helped more than 80 students become published writers in the 2016-2017 COMPAS Young Writers Anthology -- and gave them confidence that their words, and their voices, have value. You inspired people from all walks of life to learn new things and experience the life-changing power of creativity. And your support inspires us. We work inspired by the knowledge that there are people like you who believe that creativity is essential. As you will see as you read through your impact report, your gifts have accomplished some amazing things over the last fiscal year. None of this work would be possible without you. I hope you will take a moment to see what an incredible impact you’ve made this year – we are so grateful. Thank you.

Your Impact

| Fiscal Year 2017

You made it possible for 55,559 people to experience the power of creativity – right where they live, study, work, and play . You helped provide more than 6,832 hours of instruction from COMPAS Teaching Artists – including 2,277 hours of instruction provided at schools, libraries, and other locations outside of Minneapolis and Saint Paul – proof that you don’t have the live in the city to experience high-quality creative instruction!

Creativity in our Community “Everyone learned from one another, learned about some of the challenges in our community, learned about solutions - creating a mosaic was a wonderful example of how working together - appreciating and utilizing different skills and abilities - will result in an amazing end product.” – Julie D., Lead Contact for a large-scale mosaic project created with COMPAS Teaching Artist Mica Lee Anders and more than 600 volunteers “I believe due the creative writing program, incidents in the female housing units decreased significantly.” – Bill H., Senior Program Coordinator, Washington County Jail

Creativity in the Classroom What teachers had to say this year: “All students mentioned that they had fun. Many did not realize they were capable of writing and acting out a flash play. Students were proud of the work they were doing and invited me to see their performances. Teachers loved the experience that students gained, and that students were building confidence through the experience.” – Emily E., Teacher, Myers-Wilkins Elementary School “Students were engaged with Steve the entire time. He has the talent to encourage and foster the love of writing in kids. They were able to write in ways they never knew possible and had so much fun doing it!” – Sara O., Teacher, Roseau Middle School

92 COMPAS teaching artists worked with 27,098 school-aged students,

unleashing creativity in the classroom

12,992 people experienced creative education and performances in libraries, festivals, parks, places of worship, and other facilities Artful Aging™ & Arts in Healthcare “We saw participants who thought they couldn’t ‘do art’ completely amaze themselves by their abilities. They lit up with excitement and clearly had an increased sense of self-confidence!” – Gigi D., Activity Coordinator, Mainstreet Village of Richfield & Edendale Residence of Eden Prairie

4,228 children learned from COMPAS artists while receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital

6,192 people worked with a COMPAS artist at part of the Artful Aging™ program (that’s 22% more people than last year – people we couldn’t have reached without your gift!)

“One girl said she didn’t really have any ideas for completing a blank book, and started to leave. Then she had an idea....she sat down again, and completed that book and two more! She filled them with inspirational sayings. I asked her if they were gifts for others, or for her; she laughed and said, ‘they’re all for me.’” – COMPAS Teaching Artist Pat Owen, talking about her experience working with children experiencing a health crisis at Children’s Hospital
