The North tell us endless stories Estórias que remontam aos primórdios da história de Portugal, nação que haveria de nascer em Guimarães – a cidade berço que hoje é também arte e cultura, que empresta o seu nome a um dos mais conceituados artistas plásticos portugueses e cuja gastronomia lhe dá um brilho especial.

Brilho esse, estelar, que se estende à cidade de Bragança.

E outras que, ainda em Trás-os-Montes, nos fazem recuar até à sociedade aristocrática da Belle Époque e ao seu regozijo pelas curas termais, o que viria a motivar a construção do imponente e centenário Vidago Palace Hotel, inaugurado com toda a pompa, um dia depois de ser instaurada a Primeira República Portuguesa.

Estórias onde, no coração do Porto, recordamos os burgueses anos 30, entre a orquestra e o tilintar dos cálices do mítico Café Monumental, cujo edifício emblemático deu lugar ao Le Monumental Palace.

E outras que, 100 anos após o seu nascimento, celebram Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, naquele que é hoje o Jardim Botânico do Porto e que foi, outrora, a antiga Quinta do Campo Alegre.

A Norte, escrevem-se estórias sem fim. E são essas estórias repletas de história que partilhamos consigo nas próximas páginas.

Stories, which go back to the beginnings of the history of Portugal. A nation, which was to be born in Guimarães – the birthplace city, which nowadays is also art and culture, which lends its name to one of the most respected Portuguese plastic artists and which gastronomy provides it a special radiance.

This stellar radiance, which extends to the city of Bragança.

In addition, other stories, still in Trás-os-Montes, make us go back to the aristocratic society of the Belle Époque and to their rejoicing for the thermal cures. These would motivate the construction of the imposing and centenary Vidago Palace Hotel, inaugurated with all pomp, one day after the establishment of the First Portuguese Republic.

Stories in which, in the heart of Oporto, we remember the bourgeois 1930s, between the orchestra and the tinkling of the chalices of the legendary Café Monumental (Monumental Café), from which the emblematic building gave place to Le Monumental Palace.

Moreover, other stories which, 100 years after its birth, celebrate Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, in which is nowadays the Jardim Botânico do Porto (Botanical Garden of Oporto) and was, once, the old Quinta do Campo Alegre (Estate).

"O norte de Portugal representa para mim uma espécie de fonte permanente de inspiração."

"The north of Portugal represents a kind of permanent source of inspiration for me."

O seu nome é José Maria Fernandes Marques, mas é conhecido por José de Guimarães. O que é que o levou a escolher o pseudónimo “Guimarães”, se assim lhe podemos chamar?

Pierre Restany, crítico de arte francês muito conceituado e que infelizmente já morreu, escreveu um livro sobre a minha obra, onde ele próprio se interrogou sobre isso. Ele diz assim: “Pode-se interrogar até ao infinito o que leva um artista contemporâneo a adotar o nome da terra natal. A motivação mais evidente parece ser a vontade de afirmar a sua ligação a um território específico mas para isso é preciso que a localidade geográfica se preste. E é assim que o José Maria Fernandes Marques se tornou aos 22 anos José de Guimarães, do nome da pequena cidade do norte de Portugal, na província do Minho, que o viu nascer em 1939 e onde ele viveu a sua juventude até 1957, data a partir da qual, após ter terminado os seus estudos em Braga, entra na Academia Militar e na Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.”

Your name is José Maria Fernandes Marques; nevertheless, you are acknowledged as José de Guimarães. What led you to choose the pseudonym "Guimarães", if we can call it that way?

Pierre Restany, a highly respected French art critic, who unfortunately has already died, wrote a book about my work, in which he wondered himself about that. He referred as this: "One can question to the infinity what leads a contemporary artist to assume the name of his hometown.

As origens vão manter-se como o gene de todo o processo ulterior. Portanto, todos estes fenómenos da natureza e da arqueologia referidos neste livro levam-me a uma atitude que é estrutural sobre o valor do símbolo na obra de arte e Pierre Restany escreve-o assim: “José havia identificado o seu destino com a história nacional de Portugal, o mar, os grandes navegadores, a aventura colonial, os diálogos interculturais e hoje a abertura para a Europa”.

Esta é a razão por que eu adoto o nome José de Guimarães.

Yes, it started there. I was about 15 years old and I was one of the rare visitors to the only museum in Guimarães, the Alberto Sampaio Museum, dedicated to sacred art. There was the Martins Sarmento Society, as well, which has an excellent Archaeology Museum and, therefore, I was finding myself in that environment, when still quite young.

A dada altura, nos anos 60, quando já sabia o que queria, comecei calmamente a desenvolver e a aprender e devo grande parte dessa aprendizagem à Sociedade Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses, onde convi-

Em África, onde grande parte dessas imagens não tem escrita, construíam pinturas que eram um conjunto de símbolos e

In addition, I owe much of that learning to the Sociedade Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses (Cooperative Society of Portuguese Engraving), where we get together with Almada Negreiros and Júlio Pomar, among others. It was there when I started to take the first steps. I have always been very self-taught and the African culture was my first influence.

Actually, you assert that the most relevant transformation in your painting was after the understanding of the African tribal art. What transformation was this and what was behind it?

In reality, it consists in relying on the structural valence of the symbol in the method of an ethnologist. Because all cultures are expressed through images, both visual and narrative, which must be interpreted. In Africa, where most of these images have no writing, they have assembled paintings, which were a collection of symbols and symbologies, used in various situations, such as tattoos. All this was part of an assembly of vocabularies, which allowed a plastic artist to appropriate them as if they were a writing and this process of the pictograms resulted in the creation of the alphabets. The first one I did was the so-called African alphabet and worked as the basis for the creation of other alphabets originating from other cultures. This alphabet has approximately 140 symbols, all of them with a subtitle, which provides them a meaning and which are used in the artistic expression. It is the transposition to the painting of a series of symbols, of elements of an ideographic alphabet, which have a symbology and forms, which when placed side by side create a history.

What fascinates you the most in the creative process in the contemporary art?

Contemporary art has assumed a freedom and a rupture with so-called academic art. It uses inventive means and procedures, which were inconceivable 30 years ago, not only due to technological reasons, but for reasons of approach, as well. Nowadays, with anything one makes art. Subsequently, the contemporary production is, frequently, difficult

Tudo isso fazia parte de um conjunto de vocabulários que permitiam que um artista plástico se apropriasse deles como se fosse uma escrita e esse processo dos pictogramas deu origem à criação dos alfabetos. O primeiro que fiz foi o chamado alfabeto africano e serviu de base à criação de outros alfabetos provenientes de outras culturas. Este alfabeto tem cerca de 140 símbolos, todos eles com uma legenda que lhes dá um significado, e que são usados na expressão artística. É a transposição para a pintura de uma série de símbolos, de elementos de um alfabeto ideográfico que têm uma simbologia e formas que quando colocadas lado a lado criam uma história.

O que é que mais o fascina no processo criativo na arte contemporânea?

A arte contemporânea assumiu uma liberdade e uma rutura com a chamada arte académica. Usa meios e processos inventivos que eram inimagináveis há 30 anos, não só por razões tecnológicas mas também por razões de atitude. Hoje, com qualquer coisa se faz arte. Por conseguinte, a produção contemporânea é, normalmente, difícil de analisar. É preciso esperar, estudá-la. A morfologia das coisas é muito idêntica. Se pegar em 10 artistas e os puser a fazer coisas é muito provável que muitas dessas coisas sejam semelhantes. A morfologia da produção não nos permite, muitas vezes, olhar o fundo da questão. É preciso tempo para quem está de fora e tempo para os artistas desenvolverem o seu trabalho e encontrarem o seu caminho.

How do you describe the artist José de Guimarães and his work?

I am a born worker. The fact that I produce regularly allows me to find solutions to solve problems, which are often difficult. Every time we produce, we find other ways, because the artistic creation requires a per-

Eu sou um trabalhador nato. O facto de produzir com regularidade permite-me encontrar soluções para resolver problemas que muitas vezes são difíceis. Cada vez que produzimos vamos encontrando outros caminhos, porque a criação artística obriga a um trabalho permanente e continuado. Não se pode parar. Os artistas têm de se informar, ver o que se passa no mundo e transmitir o que lhes parece ser importante, expressando pelos seus meios o mundo que os rodeia. Depende da intenção de cada um, mas acho que a produção de um artista que vive à margem do mundo é vazia.

Se um artista não usa a informação para aumentar a riqueza da sua produtividade, paralisa, repete-se à saciedade. Ou estão a evoluir e a atualizar-se, embora criando com o seu estilo, ou estão a pintar o mesmo quadro toda a vida.

The artists must inform themselves, understand what is going on in the world and convey what seems to be important for them, expressing by their means the world that surrounds them. It depends on the intention of each one; nevertheless, I believe that the production of an artist who lives the world’s margin is empty. As coleções etnológicas apaixonam-me porque estão muito ligadas à criação humana, são objetos feitos pelo Homem, por culturas diferentes. O objeto arqueológico é o que aprecio mais, transmite a sabedoria de quem os fez há séculos atrás e a tentativa de representação. Através destes objetos andamos para trás no tempo, é um processo expedito de conhecimento.

ferent cultures. The archaeological object is the one that I appreciate the most. They convey the wisdom of those who made them, centuries ago, as well as the attempt of representation. Through these objects we walk backwards in time, it is an expeditious process of awareness.

In Guimarães, we can find the José Guimarães International Arts Centre. What does this space intends to be?

In 1992, I offered the city an assembly of works, which were on exhibition in the Paço dos Duques de Bragança (Palace of the Dukes of Braganza)

Em Guimarães podemos encontrar o Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães. O que pretende ser este espaço?

Em 1992 ofereci à cidade um conjunto de obras que ficaram em exposição no Paço dos Duques de Bragança e, no prefácio do catálogo da exposição, manifestei o meu desejo de que aquele núcleo de obras fosse encarado como o primeiro passo para a criação de um futuro centro de arte contemporânea, que incluísse uma secção de cultura africana e arte negra. Vinte anos depois, em 2012, nasceu o Centro Internacional das Artes, no ano em que Guimarães foi a capital europeia da Cultura. Além de arte contemporânea, o museu acolhe as minhas três coleções internacionais de África, da América Latina e da Ásia. Acho que é uma experiência inédita em Portugal e com esta diferença quis proporcionar uma adesão popular maior. É o chamado Museu Mundo, intemporal, o museu imaginário que Malraux criou e em que tudo coexistia independentemente das épocas.

and, in the preface of the catalogue of the exhibition, I have demonstrated my desire that this nucleus of works should be acknowledged as the first step towards the creation of a future centre of contemporary art, which should include a section of African culture and black art. Twenty years later, in 2012, the Centro Internacional das Artes (International Arts Centre) was created, in the very same year that Guimarães was the European Capital of Culture. In addition to the contemporary art, the museum hosts my three international collections from Africa, from Latin America and from Asia. I believe this is an unprecedented experience in Portugal and with this difference, I intended to provide a greater popular participation. It is the so-called World Museum, timeless, the imaginary museum, which Malraux has created and in which everything coexisted, independently of their periods.

A Sophia foi uma mulher da liberdade que através da sua obra escrita trouxe um conceito de liberdade importante para o país. O Amadeo só hoje começa a ser reconhecido, foi um percursor e é para mim o maior pintor português dos séculos XIX e XX, estando ao nível dos pintores estrangeiros da sua época. Foi um criador e um inventor.

Sophia was a woman of freedom who, through her written work, brought a concept of freedom, which was important to the country. Amadeo is only nowadays beginning to be recognised. He was a forerunner and, for me, he is the greatest Portuguese painter of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and being at the same level of the foreign painters of his time. He was a creator and an inventor.

Creio que era uma pessoa rica e investiu todo o seu dinheiro a preservar a Citânia de Briteiros e o Castro de Sabroso, um património que vai da idade do ferro, ao período pré-romano e que é hoje reconhecido internacionalmente.

ity of the region, who was an academic, a scientist and a man who has defended the heritage of Guimarães, the archaeologist Martins Sarmento.

I believe that he was a wealthy person and he has invested all his money in preserving the Citânia de Briteiros and the Castro de Sabroso, a heritage that goes from the Iron Age to the pre-Roman period and which is nowadays internationally recognised.

Visitar Guimarães é a oportunidade de recuar aos primórdios de Portugal e de conhecer a sua história. Para lá chegar, basta apontar a bússola para Nordeste, rumar à Província do Minho e encontrar o distrito de Braga. A pouco mais de 30 minutos do Porto, por excelentes acessos, chegará ao seu destino.

This is the rhyme which all the Vimaranenses (locals from Guimarães) chant with pride and a deep voice. The musical poem, which reflects the identity of Guimarães and reinforces its national position. In addition, this was the birthplace city, where, in the twelfth century, Portugal was born.

Visiting Guimarães is the opportunity to retreat to the beginnings of Portugal and learn about its history. To get there, one just needs to point the compass to the northeast, head to the province of Minho and find the district of Braga. The Largo da Oliveira (Olive Tree Square) invites one for a leisurely lunch at one of its many esplanades, while appreciating the Domus Municipalis, a magnificent monument, which was the Paços do Concelho (Town Hall), in the late 14th century. From there, one gets on board the cable car and goes up to the Monte da Penha (Hill). The highest point in Guimarães, which provides outstanding sights that extend to the sea. After the sunset, one returns to the city and lets oneself be carried away by all its enchantments.

To visit the city of Guimarães is to embrace the future, without forgetting the past. It is the starting point for getting to know Portugal. The country that was founded here.

CENTRO INTERNACIONAL DAS ARTES JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES INTERNATIONAL CENTRE OF ARTS JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES Guimarães é história, mas também é arte e fervilha cultura, tendo sido, aliás, eleita em 2012 a Capital Europeia da Cultura. Acontecimento a propósito do qual se inaugurou o Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães - CIAJG, no dia 24 de junho do mesmo ano. Uma estrutura que se dedica à arte contemporânea e às relações que esta desenvolve com artes de outras épocas e de diferentes culturas.

Guimarães is history; nevertheless, it is also art and bustling with culture. In fact, it was elected, the European Capital of Culture, in 2012. An event on which the International Centre of the Arts José de Guimarães – CIAJG was inaugurated on 24th June, in that same year. A structure dedicated to the contemporary art and to the relationships, which it develops with arts from other periods and from different cultures.

Localiza-se aqui desde 1951, na antiga quinta que antes havia sido propriedade dos avós de Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen — Joana e João Andresen. A mesma quinta que inspirou tantos dos contos que eternizaram a escritora e onde por, entre sebes de japoneiras e delicados jardins, Sophia costumou brincar vezes e vezes sem conta.

Ao longo de três patamares, o atual Jardim Botânico do Porto vai apresentando características distintas e recriando universos sem fim. As altas sebes de camélias centenárias separam os jardins formais influenciados pelo movimento Arts and Crafts, que rodeiam a Galeria da Biodiversidade. O dos Xistos, o peixe, o roseiral e o dos Jotas, uma homenagem que perpetua a presença dos seus antigos proprietários. Aqui, há ainda para descobrir os Jardins dos Anões, do Rapaz de Bronze ou do Liquidâmbar. O nosso imaginário infantil rejubila…

Soberbo, o Jardim de Plantas Xerófitas, no segundo patamar, convida a conhecer os catos e as suculentas que o preenchem e, mais abaixo, o arboreto seduz-nos o olhar; e o maior dos sete lagos do Jardim deixa-nos extasiados.

Considerado um espaço de referência, é eclético e ordenado, sereno e delicado. Este jardim, único, pelo seu elevado sentido estético, onde se misturam valores históricos, científicos, paisagísticos, florísticos e literários, pela sua riqueza botânica e exótica, pela raridade das espécies que aqui se encontram e pela sua dimensão.

JARDIM DE PLANTAS XERÓFITAS GARDEN OF XEROPHYTIC PLANTS Considered a place of reference, it is eclectic and methodical, peaceful and delicate. This garden is unique, because of its high aesthetic sense, where historical, scientific, landscape, floristic and literary values are blended together. In addition, for its botanical and exotic richness, its dimensions and the rarity of the species that are established there.

It has been located there since 1951, in the old farm, which had previously been owned by the grandparents of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen – Joana and João Andresen. The very same farm, which has inspired so many of the tales, which have perpetuated the writer and where, among hedges of camellias japonica and delicate gardens,

Sophia used to play time and time, again.

Along three levels, the current Botanical Garden of Oporto is presenting different characteristics and is recreating endless universes. The tall hedges made of century-old camellias japonica separate the formal gardens, influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, which surround the Biodiversity Gallery. The Xistos (Schist), the fish, the rose garden and the Jotas (Jays), a tribute that perpetuates the presence of its former owners. There, one can also discover the gardens, Jardim dos Anões (Dwarf Gardens), Jardim do Rapaz de Bronze (Bronze Boy) or Jardim do Liquidâmbar. Our childish imagination rejoices...

Outstanding, the Jardim de Plantas Xerófitas (Garden of Xerophytic Plants), on the second level, invites one to get to know the cactus and the succulents that complete it and, further below, the arboretum seduces ones eyes and the biggest of the Garden's seven lakes leaves us enthralled.

A elegante casa oitocentista

Indissociável do Jardim Botânico, eis que surge, em 2017, a Galeria da Biodiversidade – Centro Ciência Viva. Hoje, um espaço museológico que permite viajar pelas emocionantes histórias sobre a vida, a sua diversidade e os processos evolutivos que a modelam. Foi em tempos o imponente Palacete da família Andresen, “com altas janelas, largas portas e a ampla escadaria de granito abrindo em leque” e cujo átrio, dizia Sophia em “Saga” ser tão grande que lá se poderia “armar o esqueleto da baleia que há anos repousava, empacotado em numerosos volumes, nas caves da Faculdade de Ciências, por não haver lugar onde coubesse armado”.

Hoje, no edifício histórico do século XIX compõe-se uma narrativa universal, simultaneamente bela, estimulante e acessível, através das peças integradas em inovadoras criações artísticas, instalações e esculturas, sendo inquestionável o seu contributo para a expansão do conhecimento científico.

E, como que se Sophia fizesse prever, hoje, no “enorme átrio para o qual davam todas as salas” do Palacete encontra-se armado o esqueleto da baleia, e os jardins, certamente continuam a inspirar quem os visita.

The elegant nineteenth century house Inseparable from the Botanical Garden of Oporto, the Biodiversity Gallery – Living Science Centre emerges, in 2017. Nowadays, a museum area that allows one to travel throughout the exciting stories about life, its diversity and the evolutionary processes, which shape it. It was once the imposing Palace of the Andresen family, "with tall windows, wide doors and a wide granite palace staircase". Sophia described its atrium in "Saga", which was so large that one could "complete the skeleton of the whale, which had been resting for so many years, in the basement of the Faculty of Sciences, packed in numerous volumes, because there was no place where it could be assembled.".

Nowadays, in the historical building, of the nineteenth century, a universal narrative is created. Simultaneously beautiful, stimulating and accessible, through the pieces incorporated in innovative artistic creations, installations and sculptures, being unquestionably its contribution to the expansion of the scientific knowledge.

In addition, as if Sophia had foreseen it, nowadays, in the "huge atrium of the Palace, into which all the rooms lead to", the skeleton of the whale has been assembled and the gardens certainly will continue to inspire those who visit them.

MHNC-UP – Onde cultura e natureza se cruzam

O Jardim Botânico do Porto e a Galeria da Biodiversidade integram o Museu de História Natural e da Ciência da Universidade do Porto - MHNC-UP, uma estrutura mais ampla onde se contam histórias sobre a vida, com a clara missão de promover a construção e difusão do conhecimento, em áreas como a evolução, a diversidade e a convergência entre o mundo natural e cultural.

O MHNC-UP surge no final de 2015, da fusão entre o Museu de História Natural da Universidade do Porto e do Museu da Ciência da Universidade do Porto/Núcleo da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto que, para além destas unidades, inclui ainda um polo central, com instalações no Edifício Histórico da Reitoria da Universidade do Porto, neste momento em construção.

A “quinta que do alto de uma pequena colina descia até ao cais da saída da barra”, serviu, no passado, de inspiração para Sophia.

Hoje, 100 anos passados do seu nascimento a 6 de novembro de 1919, e sob a alçada do Museu de História Natural e da Ciência da Universidade do Porto, o espaço eterniza a escritora e convida o público a um encontro com os seus valores.

Sophia é então para o MHNC-UP, “mais do que o ponto de chegada, o nosso ponto de partida”.

Não se conheciam, à época, muitos espaços que fossem tão aclamados como o Café Monumental e, ao largo de toda a Península Ibérica, eram poucos os que não lhe sabiam o nome. Do passado, ressoam as memórias da orquestra que ia interrompendo as conversas eruditas e o tilintar dos cálices, por entre os espelhos vistosos e as madeiras trabalhadas.

Do passado, preservou-se o nome. Perpetuou-se a alma. E hoje, depois de décadas, reergue-se o edifício que foi café, foi pensão, foi stand e foi esquecido no tempo. Reanima-se a monumentalidade dos tempos áureos e surge, no coração do Porto, o novo Le Monumental Palace.

Le Monumental Histoire

Para contar o início desta história volta-se no tempo até aos anos 20, altura em que o arquiteto italiano Michelangelo Soá projetou o edifício neoclássico datado de 1923. Em quase 100 anos, a simbólica edificação gozou do prestígio associado ao reconhecido Café Monumental, serviu de albergue aos hóspedes que chegavam à pensão que lhe herdou o nome e, com o passar do tempo foi perdendo o brilho que a identificava, até se apagar por completo.

At that time, there were not known many spaces, which were as acclaimed as the Café Monumental (Monumental Café) and, all along the Iberian Peninsula, there were only a few people who did not know its name. From the past, resound the memories of the orchestra, which was interrupting the erudite conversations and the tinkling of the chalices among the eye-catching mirrors and the crafted wood.

From past times, its name has been preserved and its soul has been perpetuated. In addition, nowadays, after decades, it re-emerges, the same building that was once a Café, a guesthouse, a car showroom and, which was forgotten along the time. Its monumentality of the golden times is revitalised and emerges, in the heart of Oporto, the new Le Monumental Palace.

Le Monumental Histoire To tell the beginning of this story, one has to go back in time, until the 1920s, when the Italian architect, Michelangelo Soá, designed the neoclassical building, dated from 1923. In its almost 100 years, the symbolic building has enjoyed the prestige associated with the renowned Café Monumental (Monumental Café), it worked a lodging to the guests that arrived at the guesthouse, which has inherited its name and, as the

Artur Miranda e Jacques Bec não esqueceram os grandiosos espelhos, os candeeiros exuberantes, os mármores portugueses ou as alcatifas com desenhos singulares. E, até os objetos eleitos para compor a atmosfera foram escolhidos, ao pormenor, em diversos antiquários. Por instantes, revisitam-se as conversas, a orquestra, os brindes…

Quando se abrem as portas imediatamente se compreende que a monumentalidade não é só cognome. Os corredores que fazem lembrar as carruagens do Expresso Oriente e os materiais nobres, a luminosidade natural e a elegância do estilo francês que ornamentam os 76 quartos comprovam-no. Mas é a vista para a cidade que

time went by, it started losing the magnificence that identified it, until it vanished completely.

Its fortune would change and three years were enough for the building to regain its glory of the past. The refurbishing works re-established its vitality, long ago lost, preserving its characteristic features. In addition, it transformed it into a five-star hotel, which would become property of the Paris Inn Group and the first of the Maison Albar Hotels chain in Portugal. The Monumental building is, therefore, reborn.

Le Monumental Palace Along the time, persisted its name and its soul, as well as its facade in a Gothic style – the Monumental’s unmistakable business card. Inside, were preserved the original staircase handrail, the grandiosity of its high ceilings, which restored its magnificence and the elegance of its details, carefully selected by the duo of decorators of OITOEMPONTO, who recreate the essence and the atmosphere of Art Deco and Art Nouveau of the 1930s.

Artur Miranda and Jacques Bec did not forget the magnificent mirrors, the exuberant lampshades, the Portuguese marbles and the carpets with singular designs. Moreover, even the objects chosen to compose the atmosphere were chosen thoroughly, in several antique stores. For a moment, one returns to the conversations, the orchestra, the toasts...

Dupla OITOEMPONTO – A reinterpretação do Café Monumental The Duo OITOEMPONTO – The reinterpretation of Café Monumental A sua história repleta de sucessos começa em 1993, fruto do desejo de quebrar os códigos estabelecidos, que caracteriza Artur Miranda, e do savoir-faire que apresenta Jacques Bec. É assim que surge a reputada dupla OITOEMPONTO. Que une a arquitetura de interiores e a decoração em projetos sublimes.

Que funde o talento de ambos em espaços únicos, modernos e intemporais. E a quem foi confiada a missão de reinterpretar o glorioso passado do Café Monumental, conservando a sua história num hotel luxuoso, requintado e contemporâneo. Tornando-o naquele que é hoje o Monumental Palace Hotel.

Responsável pelo projeto dos quartos, dos espaços de receção e de restauração, a dupla OITOEMPONTO teve sempre por objetivo respeitar a história e o estilo do edifício. A preservação da fachada neoclássica e a seleção criteriosa de detalhes de mobiliário e de acessórios decorativos, por momentos, faz-nos recuar aos anos 20, a partir dos quais a cidade passou a concentrar os seus melhores cafés na Avenida dos Aliados e a viver ao seu ritmo. Uma dinâmica que transformou o Porto primeiro numa capital económica. Mais tarde, numa cidade estudantil, cujos jovens, que não tinham forma de se aquecer em casa, passavam boa parte do dia nesses cafés, entre livros e partilha de ideias.

Alguns elementos, como corrimões de madeiras nobres e detalhes de mármore, rebocos e molduras foram recuperados de uma sala de bilhar intacta que foi revelada por uma das paredes destruídas durante o processo de construção e que Artur Miranda e Jacques Bec designam como um “milagre”.

Este projeto foi pensado ao mais ínfimo pormenor… Os tons dos quartos, as paredes animadas por molduras brancas, as carpetes com cores e motivos ousados… No Monumental Palace Hotel todos os elementos contam uma história. Numa interpretação romantizada pela dupla OITOEMPONTO.

Its history filled with successes begins in 1993, as a result of the desire to break the established codes, which characterises Artur Miranda together with the know-how that distinguishes Jacques Bec. This is how the well-known duo OITOEMPONTO emerged, marrying the architecture of interiors and the decoration in sublime projects.

It fuses the talent of both of them into unique, modern and timeless spaces. In addition, to whom has been entrusted the mission of reinterpreting the glorious past of Café Monumental, preserving its history in a luxurious, refined and contemporary hotel. Thus rendering it into what it is nowadays, the Monumental Palace Hotel.

Responsible for the design of the bedrooms, the reception and the restaurant areas, the duo OITOEMPONTO team has always had, as a purpose, respecting the history and the style of the building. The preservation of the neoclassical facade and the careful selection of the furnishing details and decorative accessories, for moments, makes us go back to the 1920s. This is the date from which the city began to concentrate its best Cafés at the Avenida dos Aliados (Avenue) and living at their rhythm. A dynamic, which has transformed Oporto, firstly into an economic capital and later on, into a student city, whose young people, had no way of warming themselves up at home and therefore they spent most of their day in these Cafés, among books and sharing ideas.

Some elements, such as noble wood handrails and details in marble, plaster and framing were recovered from an intact billiard room, which was revealed by one of the walls that was knocked down during the construction process and which, Artur Miranda and Jacques Bec, designate as a “miracle”.

This project was planned throughout, to the smallest detail... The shades of the bedrooms, the walls animated by the white frames, the carpets with bold colours and themes... At the Monumental Palace Hotel all elements tell a story. In an interpretation glamorised by the duo OITOEMPONTO.

Como define a “profissional” Catarina Furtado?

Sou, acima de tudo, uma comunicadora totalmente convicta de que o uso da exposição deverá estar ao serviço dos outros, por isso tenho uma permanente consciência cívica, uma veia ativista que se revela na tentativa de angariar mais “cúmplices” que tenham as mesmas preocupações que eu: contribuir para tentar construir um mundo mais igualitário, justo, equilibrado, inclusivo e sustentável, onde os direitos humanos sejam reconhecidos.

How do you define Catarina Furtado, as a "professional"?

I am, above all, a communicator totally convinced that the use of the exposition should be at the service of others. Therefore, I have a permanent civic conscience, an activist vein, which is revealed in the attempt to win more "accomplices" who share the same concerns that I do: contribute to trying to build a more equitable, fair, balanced, inclusive and sustainable world, where human rights are recognised.

In addition, what about regarding the woman behind the cameras?

E a mulher longe das câmaras? É a mesma, apenas acrescento os cinco papéis mais importantes da minha vida. O de mãe, muito presente e verdadeiramente apaixonada pelos meus filhos. O de mulher, casada com um homem que partilha comigo os mesmos valores. O de “Boadrasta”, que exerço com muito amor. O de filha, irmã e tia, que representa também o meu porto de abrigo e de inspiração. E finalmente, o meu papel de cidadã voluntária, num permanente exercício de me tentar colocar na situação do outro para nunca deixar de desenvolver a empatia e porque acredito que é sempre possível fazer mais e melhor. Sou uma apaixonada por pessoas.

It is the same; I just add to it the five most important roles of my life. The role of a mother, very present and truly in love with my children. The role of a woman, married to a man who shares the same values with me. The role of a “good” stepmother, which I perform with much love. The role of a daughter, sister and aunt, which also represents my safe haven and inspiration. Moreover and finally, my role as a voluntary citizen, in a permanent exercise of trying to put myself into the situation of the other, so that I never fail to develop empathy and because I believe that it is always possible to do more and better. I am in love with people.

In which way does your contribution as a voluntary citizen materialise?

De que forma se materializa o seu contributo enquanto cidadã voluntária?

O meu contributo passa por utilizar a minha condição pública, o meu mediatismo, para fazer a mudança acontecer. Ser Embaixadora da Boa Vontade do Fundo das Nações Unidas para a População (UNFPA), fundadora da Associação Corações Com Coroa (CCC) e documentarista do programa Príncipes do Nada, na RTP, representa uma oportunidade incrível de poder conhecer melhor o mundo no que diz respeito às suas gigantes desigualdades sociais e económicas e de poder trabalhar em temáticas como a igualdade de género, não discriminação, não violência com base no género, promoção da saúde materna, sexual e reprodutiva, potencial dos jovens e cidadania. Representando, por isso, uma enorme responsabilidade.

My contribution is to use my public condition, my newsworthiness, to make the changes happen. Being a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), founder of the Associação Corações Com Coroa (CCC) (Association of Hearts with a Crown) and documentary filmmaker of the programme Príncipes do Nada (Princes of Nothing) at RTP (Radio Television of Portugal, TV Station), represents an incredible opportunity to get to know the world better. Not only regarding its massive social and economic inequalities but also to be able to work on issues such as gender equality, non-discrimination, gender-based non-violence, promotion of maternal, sexual and reproductive health, youth potential and citizenship. Consequently, representing an enormous responsibility.

Como é que Zeiss entra na vida da Catarina?

Eu já conhecia a marca, essencialmente toda a vertente mais ligada à fotografia e ao cinema. Depois surgiu um convite para a conhecer melhor e houve uma coincidência muito feliz, que foi o facto de, nesse preciso ano, eu ter começado a necessitar de usar óculos para ver ao perto. Clearly! Nevertheless, I have to admit that, before I knew about the Zeiss UVProtect lenses, I had not such a real awareness. Outrora o regozijo da sociedade aristocrática da Belle Époque, as fontes naturais e as curas termais eram também brasão da Vila de Vidago. Motivo que, no princípio do século passado, levaria o Rei D.Carlos I a projetar ali, à altura das suas ambições, um espaço luxuoso, que suscitasse curiosidade internacional e que permitisse acomodar visitantes, turistas e a realeza, que vinha em busca dos efeitos terapêuticos das famosas águas minerais. Nascia assim o Vidago Palace Hotel.

Com o assassinato do Rei D.Carlos, a família real acaba por nunca conhecer o hotel que viria a ser inaugurado já na Primeira República Portuguesa, precisamente um dia depois da queda da Monarquia a 5 de outubro de 1910.

Frequentado pela alta aristocracia portuguesa e europeia, o Vidago Palace Hotel foi considerado durante décadas um dos hotéis mais luxuosos da Península Ibérica e uma das estâncias europeias de maior prestígio, afinal de contas era um Palácio com cuidados termais e um excelente campo de golfe. Com grandiosas festas e uma floresta anfitriã de grandes passeios.

A partir dos anos 70, embora ainda reconhecido em Portugal, o Vidago Palace Hotel vê o seu brilho desvanecer-se, diante de empreendimentos internacionais com padrões de luxo mais elevados e uma oferta mais diversificada e, em 2006, as suas portas chegariam mesmo a encerrar. Um malfadado destino que tem fim exatamente 100 anos depois da sua fundação.

Em 2010, depois de obras de grande envergadura, dá-se a reabertura triunfal. O momento a partir do qual o Vidago Palace Hotel se assume como um cinco estrelas sob a chancela The Leading Hotels of the World e volta a ser uma referência no mercado hoteleiro.

Fazendo justiça aos critérios de esplendor e conforto do século XXI, sem sacrificar o serviço, a convivialidade, a identidade e o património arquitetónico que o notabilizaram Europa fora.

Hoje, já não existe o balneário termal de outros tempos, mas manteve-se o poder das suas águas, cujas propriedades continuam a atrair ao novo SPA, hedonistas à procura do bem-estar absoluto.

Formerly the enchantment of the aristocratic society of the Belle Époque, the natural springs and thermal cures were also the coat of arms of the village of Vidago. The reason why, at the beginning of the last century, the King D. Carlos I, would come to design in there, a luxurious space, in accordance with his ambitions. This would arouse the international curiosity, as well as accommodating the visitors, the tourists and the monarchs coming in search of the therapeutic results of the famous mineral waters. Consequently, the Vidago Palace Hotel has emerged.

With the assassination of the King D. Carlos I, the royal family ends up never knowing the hotel. This was only inaugurated in the First Portuguese Republic, precisely one day after the fall of the Monarchy, on the 5th October, 1910.

Frequented by the Portuguese and European high aristocracy, the Vidago Palace Hotel was considered, for decades, one of the most luxurious hotels in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the most prestigious European resorts. After all, it was a Palace with thermal baths and an excellent golf course. With grand parties and a forest, hosting large strolls.

From the 1970s onwards, although still recognised in Portugal, the Vidago Palace Hotel perceives a fading away of its glamour, in comparison with international developments with higher standards of luxury and with more diversified offers. Moreover, in 2006, its doors would have even closed down. An ill-fated fortune, which comes to an end, precisely, 100 years after its inauguration.

In 2010, after major works, the triumphal reopening takes place. The moment from which the Vidago Palace Hotel assumes itself as a five star hotel, under the seal of “The Leading Hotels of the World” and returns to become a reference in the hospitality marketplace. Doing justice to the criteria of splendour and comfort of the 21st century, without sacrificing its service, its hospitality, its identity and its architectural heritage, which made it renowned throughout all of Europe.

Há duas novas razões para visitar o Norte do país. Os restaurantes A Cozinha, em Guimarães, e o Restaurante G, em Bragança, acabam de ser distinguidos com uma estrela Michelin. Aqui cada nova garfada é uma explosão de sensações, uma autêntica viagem de sabores.

Pode não haver uma receita única para o sucesso, mas os pratos dos chefs António Loureiro e Óscar Gonçalves estão lá perto.

There are two new reasons to visit the North of the country. The restaurants A Cozinha (The Kitchen) in Guimarães and Restaurant G in Braganza, they have just been awarded a Michelin star each. In there, each new forkful is an explosion of sensations, an authentic journey of flavours. There may not exist a single recipe for success; nevertheless, the dishes of Chefs António Loureiro and Óscar Gonçalves are very close to it.

O norte de Portugal é, sem dúvida, um paraíso para os amantes de bons vinhos. Mas a gastronomia, tão diversa como a paisagem onde os ingredientes são produzidos, não fica atrás e tem ganho cada vez mais prémios. Os restaurantes portugueses A Cozinha, do chef António Loureiro, e o Restaurante G, do chef Óscar Gonçalves, foram distinguidos com uma estrela Michelin cada um e são agora parte integrante do Guia Michelin 2019.

O prémio pode ser deles, mas a região do norte também fica a ganhar. “Espero sobretudo que haja um despertar de interesse pelo património gastronómico da nossa região. Acredito que distinções como esta podem ajudar a dinamizar a cidade e a demonstrar o seu valor intrínseco”, revela o chef Óscar Gonçalves. Para além da maior visibilidade a nível local e nacional, António Loureiro acredita ainda que esta distinção vai trazer uma qualidade turística à região do norte.

De alma e coração

Dedicam-se de alma e coração a esta arte, mas o processo até à conquista da estrela Michelin não foi fácil. “Iniciei a minha atividade há cerca de 25 anos em Guimarães, onde trabalhei na cozinha tradicional durante alguns anos. No entanto, achei que precisava de “crescer” e resolvi sair da minha área de conforto”, conta António Loureiro. Desde então nunca mais parou. Estagiou em restaurantes portugueses e estrangeiros de grande notoriedade e atravessou o país: “tive a oportunidade de chefiar cozinhas do Norte ao Algarve, passando pelo Alentejo raiano”. O sucesso não se constrói de um dia para o outro e o chef sabe-o melhor que ninguém.

Nevertheless, the gastronomy, as varied as the landscape where the ingredients are produced, is second to none and has been winning more and more awards. The Portuguese restaurants A Cozinha (The Kitchen), by chef António Loureiro, and Restaurant G, by chef Óscar Gonçalves, were distinguished with a Michelin star each and they are now part of the 2019 Michelin Guide.

The award may be theirs; nevertheless, the Northern region is also winning.

“I hope, above all, that there is an awakening of the interest for the gastronomic heritage of our region. I believe that distinctions such as this one can assist to toughen the city more dynamic and demonstrate its inherent value”, reveals the Chef Óscar Gonçalves. In addition to the greater visibility at a local and national level, Chef António Loureiro, believes that this distinction will bring a tourist quality to the Northern region, as well.

Wholeheartedly They dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to this art; nevertheless, the process until the winning of the Michelin star was not easy. “I started my activity about 25 years ago in Guimarães, where I worked in traditional cuisine for some years. However, I found that I needed “growing” and I decided to leave my comfort zone”, refers Chef António Loureiro. Since then he has never stopped. He apprenticed in Portuguese and foreign restaurants of great notoriety and travelled throughout the country: “I had the opportunity to be head of kitchens from the North to the Algarve, passing through the sun beamed Alentejo”. The success is not built from one day to the next and the Chef knows it better than anyone else.

Óscar Gonçalves conta-nos que a família foi um pilar fundamental no seu percurso: “Existe todo um percurso familiar que sempre me fez viver rodeado pela cozinha e pela arte de bem receber. Foi ao lado do meu pai e do meu irmão que comecei a servir à mesa. E foi mais tarde, ao lado da minha mãe, que cozinhei o meu primeiro prato”. Hoje quem ocupa o lugar de chefe de sala e sommelier no restaurante é o irmão, António. O Restaurante G é o primeiro em Bragança a ser premiado com uma estrela Michelin e o chef mostra-se orgulhoso deste resultado: “Há muito que sentíamos que a qualidade dos produtos e da cozinha da nossa terra era merecedora desta distinção. É uma honra que a nossa família o tenha conseguido”.

O papel da equipa foi fundamental nesta conquista. “Este prémio é o reconhecimento do valor que esta equipa tem”, diz António Loureiro. Costuma dizer-se que os amigos são a família que escolhemos e neste caso “a nossa equipa é a nossa família”, remata Óscar Gonçalves.

Nascidos para ganhar

Os chefs são perentórios quando questionados sobre o processo até à conquista da estrela Michelin. Até porque a sorte não acontece por acaso e nada se consegue sem trabalho. “Acho que não existe processo, existe sim trabalho com paixão, dedicação, produto e uma disciplina que ajuda a ter consistência”, garante António Loureiro. E desengane-se se acredita que por terem ganho uma estrela Michelin vão ficar de braços cruzados. Ambos querem continuar a aprender a evoluir como profissionais do setor. Óscar Gonçalves diz mesmo que “ser distinguido com uma estrela era uma ambição, mas o caminho passa sobretudo por continuar a cumprir com o principal objetivo: satisfazer quem nos visita”.

Chef Óscar Gonçalves tells us that his family was a fundamental pillar in his journey: “There is a whole family journey, which has always made my life surrounded by the kitchen and by the art of welcoming. It was with my father and my brother that I started as a waiter. In addition, later on, it was with my mother that I cooked my first dish.”. Nowadays, the headwaiter and sommelier in the restaurant is his brother, António.

Restaurant G is the first one to be awarded a Michelin star in Braganza and the Chef is proud of this result: “We have long felt that the quality of the products and the cuisine of our land deserved this distinction. It is an honour that our family has made it.”.

The role of the team was fundamental in this achievement. “This award is the recognition of the value that this team has”, states Chef António Loureiro. It is often said that friends are the family we choose and in this case “our team is our family”, finishes Chef Óscar Gonçalves.

Born to win The Chefs are peremptory when questioned about the process until the Michelin star’s achievement. Even because luck does not happen by chance and nothing is achieved without working. “I believe there is not a process.

There is working with passion, dedication, product and a discipline that helps to have consistency”, assures Chef António Loureiro. Moreover, think again if you believe that because they were awarded a Michelin star, they will stand by and do nothing more. Both of them want to continue learning and developing as professionals of the industry. Chef Óscar Gonçalves refers that “being distinguished with a star was an ambition; nevertheless, the path is mainly to continue to fulfil with the main objective: to satisfy those who visit us.”.

Quando decidiu ser nutricionista?

Apesar de, desde cedo, me ter sido incutido o “poder” dos alimentos e a doutrina da nutrição, não foi um sonho de infância como o de ser bailarina, veterinária ou enfermeira. Foi no momento da entrada na faculdade que decidi que queria ser nutricionista. Quem me descreveu o curso, fez-me acreditar que seria isto que queria fazer para sempre, e, na verdade, tinha razão (e atenção que há 19 anos atrás, quando entrei na faculdade, a profissão de nutricionista não era algo comum como hoje em dia). Cresci no Algarve, junto do mar e da natureza e quando me decidi, vim de malas e bagagens para Lisboa à procura de um sonho. Correu bem! Sou muito feliz com a minha escolha e ao que ela conduziu.

When did you decide to become a nutritionist?

Although I have been engrained in the "power" of food and the principles of nutrition, from an early age, it was not a childhood dream such as being a ballerina, a veterinarian or a nurse. It was only at the time of enrolling to the university when I decided that I wanted to become a nutritionist.

Whomever has described the course to me, made me believe that this is what I wanted to do forever and, it is a matter of fact, that person was right (and, be aware that, 19 years ago, when I went to the university, the profession of nutritionist, was not something as common as it is nowadays). I grew up in the Algarve, near the sea and nature and, when I took my decision, I moved with all my worldly belongings to Lisbon, searching for a dream. It turned out well! I am very happy with my choice and with what it has led me onto.

Comer bem não deveria ser uma moda (diga-se passageira), mas sim uma constante. A verdade é que, hoje em dia, está na moda rechear o Instagram com fotos de pratos nutricionalmente interessantes, partilhar a sua dieta com abacate, sementes ou sumos coloridos.

It is not just inside your office that you give advice on healthy eating; you also collaborate with various health and wellbeing magazines, including fashion magazines. Does eating and fashion go hand in hand?

Eating well should not be a fashion (shall we say fleeting), moreover, it should be continuous. The truth is that, nowadays, it is fashionable to stuff the Instagram with photos of nutritionally interesting dishes; sharing ones diet with avocados, seeds or colourful juices.

Está na moda ter uma nutricionista e fazer desporto. Não me preocupa enquanto for feito com bom senso e assente em bases credíveis. Desejo, acima de tudo, que seja uma moda para ficar.

It is fashionable to have a nutritionist and do sports. This does not concern me, as long as it is made with common sense and based on credible grounds. I wish, above all, that this will be a fashion, which has come and will stay.

Para além da alimentação, fale-nos dos seus rituais de vida saudável. Quais os que não dispensa?

Ar puro, natureza, passear e estar em família. Ser saudável não é meramente a ausência de doença, mas sim o equilíbrio entre o físico e o mental.

Beyond healthy eating, tell us about your healthy life rituals. Which ones can you not live without?

Fresh air, nature, sightseeing and being with the family. Being healthy is not merely the absence of illness; moreover, it is the balance between the physical and mental state.

A sua família prepara-se para receber mais um elemento. Qual a importância de uma educação alimentar desde tenra idade? E a partir de que idade deve ser praticada?

Sem dúvida alguma que é algo que me preocupa e que me motiva a defender com unhas e dentes aquilo em que acredito dentro e fora de casa. A alimentação saudável deve começar a partir do momento em que se inicia a diversificação alimentar - entre os 4 e os 6 meses.

Your family is preparing to welcome one more element. What is the importance of a dietary education from an early age? In addition, from which age should it be practiced?

Undoubtedly, that is something that concerns me and which motivates me to fight tooth and nail for what I believe in, at home and out and about.

Healthy eating should begin as soon as food diversification begins – between the age of 4 and 6 months old.

A puericultura, tal como a alimentação, é algo que a preocupa no crescimento do bebé? O que mais valoriza nas marcas infanto-juvenis?

O conforto, a estética e o custo são os critérios que mais pesam na minha decisão, mas o impacto ambiental da marca e ser de origem nacional é cada vez mais algo que valorizo.

Is childcare, just like food, something that concerns you in the baby's development? What do you value the most in children's brands?

I value comfort, aesthetics and cost. These are the criteria, which I consider the most in my decision. Nevertheless, the environmental impact of the brand, as well as being a national product, they are also something which I increasingly value.

As atividades em família são hoje um desafio para os pais que vivem “sem tempo”. Que atividades proporciona à sua filha que permitam uma partilha de tempo e brincadeira?

Até à data, e porque gosto de usufruir do tempo livre que tenho para desfrutar de momentos de qualidade com a minha filha, tentei abdicar dos ecrãs cá em casa. Há 18 meses que não há televisão ligada, telemóveis à mesa, nem tablets para distrair a birra. Tento utilizar livros, histórias, brinquedos didáticos, cubos, caixas de encaixe e tudo o que permita a interação pessoal e o estímulo cognitivo. Sempre que posso vamos ao parque e tentamos que ela interaja com crianças de diferentes idades. Acreditamos que a socialização é importante e nesta fase em que temos um novo membro a caminho queremos ter a certeza que está habituada a ter outros bebés por perto.

Family activities, nowadays, are a challenge for parents who live "without time". Which activities do you provide to your daughter, which allow you sharing time and playing?

Up to this date and because I appreciate the free time that I have to enjoy quality moments with my daughter, I have tried to abdicate having screen time, here at home. For 18 months, there has been no television connection, no mobile phones at the table, nor tablets to distract the tantrums. I try to use books, stories, didactic toys, cubes, puzzle boxes and everything, which allows personal interaction and cognitive stimulation. Whenever I can, we go to the park and try to interact with children of different ages. We believe that socialisation is important and, at this stage, when we have a new element on the way, we want to make sure that she is used to having other babies around.

A tecnologia é uma opção ou apenas um suporte?

Não ter ecrãs não significa que não usemos tecnologia. Por cá, também houve esterilizadores e bombas de extração de leite. As babycam têm sido uma ajuda preciosa, certificando-nos que a nossa pequena está bem durante a noite. Brinquedos com sons e livros que tocam músicas infantis são os favoritos da nossa filha.

Usamos a tecnologia para aprender, divertir e interagir, não para afastar do contacto humano e familiar.

Trazer a sua filha para a cozinha, faz parte dessas atividades?

Ela ainda é muito pequenina para pôr mãos à obra, mas observa.

Adoro cozinhar para ela e vê-la comer com gosto o que lhe preparo.

Is technology an option or is it just a support?

Not having screens does not mean that we do not use technology. Around here, there are also sterilisers and pumps for milk extraction. The baby cams have been a precious help, making sure that our little one is fine overnight. Audible toys and books, which play children's songs, are our daughter's favourites. We use technology to learn, for entertainment and interacting, not to move away from human and family contact.

Bringing your daughter into the kitchen, is that part of these activities?

She is still too young to get to grips with it; nevertheless, she observes it. I love cooking for her and watching her eating what I prepare for her.

Em primeiro lugar, a neutralidade. Para o quarto da minha filha escolhi tons neutros, crus, pastel e terra. Nada infantil, mas muito pacífico.

Em segundo lugar, a organização. É tão fácil ter um quarto infantil constantemente de pernas para o ar, por isso tem que existir um espaço para brincar, mas ao mesmo tempo complementar com uma zona de arrumação. A vida de uma mãe torna-se muito mais tranquila.

Firstly, neutrality. For my daughter's bedroom I chose neutral, natural, pastel and earth shades. Nothing childish; nevertheless, very peaceful.

Secondly, the organisation. It is so easy to have a children's bedroom constantly upside down and, therefore, there has to be a space to play around; nevertheless and at the same time, complement it with a storage area. A mother's life becomes much calmer.

Acho que as cores não devem ter sexo, gosto de vestir a minha filha de todas as cores. É uma menina sim, mas não precisa de andar de cor de rosa dos pés à cabeça para ser mais ou menos feminina.

Tanto visto macacões de ganga, calças largas, woodies e ténis como um vestidinho clássico com um laçarote nas costas. Acredito na liberdade e na variedade, e que as cores influenciam o estado de espírito. Transmitem paz, aconchego ou brilho, alegria e energia.

I believe that colours should not have a gender. I like to dress my daughter in all colours. She is a girl, yes! Nevertheless, she does not have to dress in pink, from head to toe, to be more or less feminine. I dress her either with denim dungarees, wide-leg trousers, woodies and sneakers or with a little classic dress with a bow tie on the back. I believe in freedom and variety and that colours influence the mood. They convey peace, warmth or brightness, happiness and energy.

The Regional Tourism Authority of Oporto and the North of Portugal was distinguished with the Internationalisation Prize – Best Promotional Action on Tourism, at the “Xantar 2019 – Salón Internacional de Turismo Gastronómico” (International Gastronomic Tourism Fair), in Ourense, Spain.

Os agora 85 quartos, entre os quais 10 luxuosas suites, decorados com obras de arte originais e detalhes requintados, bem como o cosmopolita Vogue Café Porto que o hotel acolhe, completam a experiência majestosa que caracteriza o “novo velho” Infante Sagres e que mereceu distinção nos Prémios de Excelência Condé Nast Johansens 2019, em Londres, na categoria “Best Newcomer or Back on the Scene Hotel” (Melhor Hotel Novo ou Reabertura) da Europa e Zona do Mediterrâneo.

After an intensive renovation process carried out by the architect António Teixeira Lopes, the oldest five-star hotel in Invicta – Hotel Infante Sagres Porto, was reborn in April 2018 with the aim of recovering the original configuration of the 1950s. The current 85 rooms, including 10 luxurious suites, decorated with original artwork and exquisite details, as well as the cosmopolitan Vogue Café Porto, which the hotel welcomes, complete the majestic experience. After the success in several European cities, including Lisbon, as well as in the USA, the retrospective exhibition of the Dutch graphic artist M. C. Escher now arrives at the Invicta city. There are 135 works, among which, one can find the famous masterpieces “Hand with Reflecting Sphere” (1935), “Eye” (1946) and “Bond of Union” (1956), which show his creative journey.

O fado, a guitarra portuguesa e a mestiçagem com outros sons ibéricos têm lugar reservado na Casa da Música, durante o mês de agosto.

Todas as tardes, a música portuguesa de raiz tradicional ilustrará os sotaques, as várias regiões do país e a riqueza sonora das paisagens rurais onde a terra é a mais alta cultura.

The fado, the Portuguese guitar and the crossbreeding with other Iberian sounds have a special place reserved in the Casa da Música (The House of the Music), during the month of August. Every afternoon, the Portuguese music with traditional roots will illustrate the accents, the various regions of the country and the richness of the sound of the rural landscapes, where the land is the highest form of culture.

A exposição, organizada pelo Museo Guggenheim Bilbao em parceria com o Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves e a Kunsthall Rotterdam, cobre duas décadas de prática artística de Joana Vasconcelos, analisando o seu desenvolvimento como artista. A minha relação com o Porto estabeleceu-se ainda antes de nascer. O meu bisavô era natural da cidade e lá fundou a sua fábrica de tecelagem, sobre a qual pouco sei. No entanto, lembro-me bem da sua casa de férias em Santa Cruz do Douro onde a minha bisavó recebia a família toda para passarmos temporadas no verão, quando era muito jovem. Com essa idade não fazia a mais pequena ideia de que iria ser artista plástica, e, muito menos que a cidade natal de alguns dos meus familiares viria a ser curiosamente também uma espécie de berço na minha vida profissional. Em 1996, quando dava os meus primeiros passos artísticos, expus pela primeira vez a minha obra em Serralves, juntamente com a de outros artistas internacionais.

Aqui foi onde tudo começou. Percebi que arte era uma hipótese viável e que existia uma carreira a fazer. Ainda hoje luto por ela e é com muita satisfação que volto a “casa”. Recebeu-me há mais de 20 anos e agora volto com uma antologia que apresenta o que aprendi desde então, o que criei e essencialmente como cresci.

My relationship with Oporto was established even before I was born. My great-grandfather was a native of the city of Oporto and in there he founded his weaving mill, about which I hardly know anything. Nevertheless, I remember very well his holiday house, in Santa Cruz do Douro, where my great-grandmother welcomed the whole family to spend some periods in the summer, when I was very young. At that age, I did not have the slightest idea that I was going to become a plastic artist.

Neither, that the hometown of some of my relatives would also become, curiously, a kind of the birthplace of my professional life. In 1996, when I took my first steps as a plastic artistic, I first exhibited my work in Serralves, alongside works of other international artists.

This is where it all began. I realised that art was a worthwhile hypothesis and that there was a career to be made. Even nowadays, I still fight for it and it is with a great satisfaction that I return “home”. It welcomed me more than 20 years ago and now I come back with an anthology, which presents what I have learned since then, what I have created and, essentially, it shows how I have grown up.

Born in 1971, the plastic artist has exhibited regularly since the mid-1990s. The work “A Noiva” (“The Bride”) brought her the international recognition. Moreover, in 2019, she celebrates more than 20 years of her career, in the very same city where she first individually exhibited, the city of Oporto.
