19 Wing REXSPO MESSAGE Hello Folks, You’ve finally made it through the COVID confusion of this year’s APS and finally arrived to 19 Wing and the Comox Valley. Wherever you have decided to set up home in this beautiful corner of Canada, know that you have lots of support from the Wing and its partnering organizations, like the Comox MFRC and PSP. One thing that I ask that you keep at the forefront of your mind at all times is to stay safe and stay healthy. To that end, you must wear a mask where required at work (and I strongly encourage you to wear it whenever you are unable to maintain physical distancing outside of your immediate circle), must follow Personal Health Protection measures at all times while on the Wing or using Wing facilities; and always have to be aware of your own health should you or a family member start to feel sick. Contact your Chain of Command for further details. We live in a challenging time that has created a ‘new normal’ for us, not only in our work environment, but also in our communities and for our families. Being able to support each other while supporting best health practices – CAF and provincial alike – is key to success and key to your happiness at 19 Wing Comox. Your personal health and safety is our priority and it drives everything that we do at the Wing. We pride ourselves on the balance that we’ve struck between keeping our Force strong and healthy, and ensuring that life at home can continue in a sustainable fashion. We are particularly fortunate to be in Comox, as it is easier to maintain physical distancing in the Valley, and our fellow community members are COVID health-conscious. Take advantage of the spacious outdoors and explore your new home. This REXSPO guide will point you to many of the organizations that can be found in the Comox Valley, organizations that may support your and your family’s interests. Alongside your time here, remember that you and your family have your 19 Wing family with you at all times. We’re here whenever you need to find out the latest daycare regulations, or to support your family if you are deployed. Welcome to 19 Wing. 19 Wing Strong! Dany Poitras 19 Wing Commander
The Chaplain Benevolent Fund is used to help military members and their families through an urgent, unexpected financial crisis. It is a limited emergency source of funds consisting of a non-repayable grant, normally up to $300.00, and is administered by the 19 Wing Chaplains. Historically, this fund received support from the Wing Chapel, the Beard Growing Contest, Canada Company and the REXSPO BBQ. In 2019, the Chaplain Benevolent Fund assisted 29 members and the Christmas Hamper Fund provided support to 35 families and 74 children. The Chaplain Benevolent Fund is a “military helping military” program and everyone’s support is greatly appreciated. Please consider donating by emailing the Wing Chaplain at alexander.varga@forces.gc.ca

19 Wing Comox Traditional Karate Club
The 19 Wing Karate Club has been serving the military community since 1997. Goju Ryu Karate is a traditional form of karate from Okinawa. The words Goju Ryu mean ‘hard/soft’ and they refer to the fact that our style of karate balances hard techniques, such as punches, with softer, more graceful techniques that re-direct an opponent’s energy. We emphasize practical self-defence and promote an attitude of respect for self and others. Our training does not involve competitive sparring or competing in tournaments. Although the training is physically challenging, we are a family-friendly dojo where everyone is welcome. ctka@shaw.ca

19 Wing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club
19 Wing Jiu Jitsu Club is always looking to build its membership. We welcome Military Member/Veteran/RCMP and their spouses, DND Contractors, Public Servants and the General Public. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or BJJ is a martial art based on grappling and ground fighting, focusing on the skill of controlling one’s opponent through techniques that force him or her to submit. Canadian Military Wives Choirs
www.canadianmilitarywiveschoirs.com Did you see the “Military Wives” movie this spring? Did it make you long for the sisterhood of lifelong friends? Come join us for singing, camaraderie and friendship on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 – 6:45. We learn songs and musicianship, we support each other, participate in activities and sometimes we bake. We are happy and excited to welcome new and returning members on Wednesday September 16th. You can find more information about the Canadian Military Wives Choirs movement at www.canadianmilitarywiveschoirs.com COVID-19 has made planning choir challenging. Please bring your own sanitizer, chair, water and face mask etc. For September, we will be meeting in the field at Airport Elementary on Salmonberry Dr at Oceanspray, singing a cappella and simple harmonies. There is no washroom access so please come prepared! Once we get a feeling for numbers we will be moving to the Faith Centre (formerly the Protestant Chapel) on Military Row for the remainder of the term either as one group or in partial groups. As it might be hard to hold our traditional Christmas concert, we will be working on some simple recordings and caroling to spread the cheer and our love of music. This has been a scary year, but it is the perfect time to join a choir! See you there! If you have any membership questions please email our membership coordinator Laura, at cmwc.comox.membership@gmail.com

LUSH Valley Food Action Society
LUSH Valley was established in the year 2000 to address the issue of food waste in this rich agricultural region. The organization has several program areas. The most well-know is the Fruit Tree Harvest Program where they utilize volunteers to help pick fruit from backyards and local farms. (A family-friendly volunteer activity!) This is food that may otherwise drop to the ground and go to waste, attracting wildlife and other pests. The harvest is shared with 1/3 each going to the volunteers, the landowner (if they want it), and to various social service agencies or to the organization's new 'Good Food Box' hamper program. In 2018, LUSH also introduced a Farm Gleaning program whereby they work with local farmers to provide volunteer labour in exchange for a share of the harvest from these crops. LUSH also offers Healthy Foods and Community Gardening programs. Pre-COVID-19, there were in-person cooking and gardening classes, however, until COVID restrictions are lifted, both cooking and gardening workshops are now done online. (Check the Events page on their website.) In April this year, in response to the COVID Pandemic, LUSH introduced a Hot Meal Program and Good Food Box (healthy food hampers) to address the food insecurity faced by our most vulnerable populations. Volunteers are utilized in the preparation of the Hot Meals and Good Food Box assembly. Anyone interested in volunteering with LUSH Valley may sign-up on their website (click 'Join' in the menu bar). Those in need of food support will also find information on the website. (Click 'Food Share') LUSH Valley also has Facebook Groups for inspiration, engagement and ideas: Grow Food Everywhere Comox Valley Comox Valley Young Cooks Club Get Cooking Comox Valley!
