The Comox Military Family Resource Centre is a BC registered non-profit society that offers a number of programs and services to serving and retired military members and their families. As a CF member posted to 19 Wing, you and your family are valued members of the MFRC Society.

This information package has been prepared to give you an overview of the programs available at the MFRC, as well as useful information on various other services and agencies in the Comox Valley. Comox Military Family Resource Centre The Comox Military Family Resource Centre (Comox MFRC) is a non-profit organization that serves military families by working with community members to identify needs and resources and to develop, implement and maintain programs which strengthen military families in the 19 Wing Community. Our office is located in the 19 Wing Fitness and Community Centre (FCC).

The Comox MFRC is administrated by a Board of Directors made up of military spouses and members. Anyone who is interested in joining the board is asked to contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 250-339-8211 Local 8571.

Comox MFRC Programs and Services Welcoming Services / Information and Referral The Comox MFRC provides military members and their families with resources and support regarding their new community. Additionally, we host many welcoming events and activities for newly posted-in members and their families.

These events and activities are meant to introduce individuals to their new community while giving them an opportunity to socialize. We are here to help you get established and connected.

Family Health Liaison

Are you a newly posted family looking for primary medical services in the Valley?

Maybe we can help. If you or a family member has special needs, the Family Health Liaison provides support by helping to navigate the system and make appropriate referrals within the Comox Valley. Military families are invited to contact us to obtain information about health care providers and other allied healthcare professionals in the area.

Children’s Services (0-5 years) Creative Kids Casual Childcare (18 months to school-age)

Children are cared for in a safe and fun environment while parents take part in workshops, gym activities, attend to appointments or have much-deserved time off.

Parents may register for 1 to 3 hours per morning and up to 4 weeks in advance.

Payment is required at the time of registration. For more information and to check on availability please phone reception at 250-339-8290

Parent and Child Playgroup

“Parents N’ Tots” is a free of charge playgroup that runs once a week on Mondays. It gives military families with children under 5 years old a place to meet with other families, share experiences, interests and resources while having fun playing with their children. No registration required.

Have a morning off from parenting. 4 full hours of activities are available for children from infancy to 12 years old. This program is open to military and civilian families. Pre-registration is required by the Wednesday before the event.

Kinnikinnik Childcare Centre (KCC)

Kinnikinnik Childcare Centre and 19 Wing Family Centre provide childcare for children from infancy to age 5 (including Kindergarten aged). Full and part-time spaces are available in Infant and Toddler Care (4 month – 35 month), French Immersion (ages 3 – 5) and English Early Learning Program (ages 3 – 5).

Counselling Services Our Counsellors provide free and confidential services to military families.

Clients are individuals, couples or families seeking short-term and crisis counselling. If circumstances require long-term or specialized services, the counsellor will make a referral to appropriate community resources. Counsellors have confidential telephone lines, Locals 7128 or 8286.

Family Liaison Officer

The Family Liaison Officer (FLO) works with families as they cope with a CAF family member experiencing an illness, injury and/or special need. FLO also supports families in times of grief due to the passing of their military loved one.

Co-located at the MFRC and IPSC in Comox, FLO supports the family by responding to family needs, advocating on their behalf and assisting in the navigation of, and access to, relevant programs and services. FLO offers supportive counselling to family members in crisis, short-term counselling, navigating the transition to civilian life, psycho-educational programming and acts as a referral agent. Computer Lab/Learning Centre The Comox MFRC oversees a computer lab which has several GP Net computers with Internet access. Use of the computers is open to active CF members and DND civilian employees, retired military and their family members. CF members visiting from other bases and military personnel from other countries are also welcome to use the computers.

Employment/Education Services Employment Services

We provide one-on-one consultation and assistance with career exploration, self-employment goals, networking strategies, and proactive job search strategies to transitioning military members, veterans, military spouses and youth aged 16 and older.

Education Services

We provide support and assistance to releasing military members, veterans, military spouses and youth, aged 16 years or older, seeking career-related education or training. This includes support with choosing and applying to college, university, vocational training, and distance education applications; assistance with academic upgrading; scholarship applications; requests for accommodations or supports for learning disabilities or physical barriers; and exam invigilation.

Workshops Employment workshops are available to assist military families with selfawareness, career research and job search. We also offer skills training workshops such as Microsoft Excel and Food Safe. We host the Self Employment Circle, a monthly networking group for military family members considering entrepreneurship, self-employment, or working from home.

Emergency and Respite Childcare Emergency childcare may be provided when a CAF family needs an immediate caregiver, and all other options have been exhausted and/or there is not the time to implement the family’s designated Family Care Plan due to the urgency of the CAF duty being imposed.

Contact the Emergency Childcare Coordinator at the Comox MFRC by calling 250-339-8211 Local 7239 during office hours. After hours, weekends and holidays call Wing Ops at 250-339-8231 and request to be connected to the Duty Chaplain.

Families may qualify for respite childcare due to the total family situation, including the CF member’s work commitments. Respite Childcare is usually considered based upon the advice of a medical or social services professional (physician, public health nurse, social worker, chaplain, psychologist, etc.)

Family Separation and Reunion (Deployment) Services We provide a variety of services and activities to assist CAF/Reservist Families coping with the impact of absence, TD, IR, deployment, or work related separation. We can offer support to whomever the member designates or individual or family that self identifies. This support extends to loved ones living in the local area, as well as those who may reside elsewhere in Canada. Our services are voluntary and confidential.

Respite Childcare

Take-A-Break Childcare (TAB)

Take-A-Break (TAB) is a specific type of subsidized respite childcare offered to deployment families to offset some of the stresses imposed on family caregivers.

19 Wing families with dependent children under 12 years old, who experience an absence of 30 days or more due to their CF member’s work commitments, is eligible for TAB. Families who experience multiple absences with very short periods of reunion in between (ex. SAR) may also be eligible.

Family Information Line (FIL) The Family Information Line serves the loved ones of Canadian Forces members.

You can contact the FIL for any support your family may need as a result of the unique nature of military life. Phone: 1-800-866-4546.

Second Language Services French Services

The goal of the French program is to provide services and programs in French to military families. We are pleased to assist Francophone families in whatever ways we can to mitigate the constraints of Francophone services available in the Comox Valley. If you would like Comox MFRC services in French, please contact the French Program Coordinator at Local 6656.

Second Language Training

English and French courses are offered during the year when there is sufficient enrolment to meet minimum registration numbers. Courses may be available at multiple levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced, again based upon enrolment numbers. https://www.cafconnection.ca/Comox/

Quality of Life Services The Quality of Life programs at the Comox MFRC are based on a commitment to active learning, identifying and developing individual strengths, self-enrichment, and helping build interpersonal relationships and community. The focus is on prevention, providing participants with the tools and resources to help enhance their own quality of life.

Volunteer Opportunities The Comox MFRC offers quality programs, events, services and resources to the military community thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers.

Veteran Family Program This service is dedicated to supporting medically releasing CAF members, medically releasing CAF Veterans and their families as they transition into civilian life. The coordinator can advocate and assist these families in their navigation of, and access to, community relevant programs and services.

Kids and Youth Services (5-18 years) Kids and Youth Services staff coordinate and deliver several programs including: Home Alone, St. John Ambulance Babysitter’s Course, Girls Rock, Pro-D-Day activities and much more! Weekly, kids and youth have the opportunity to hang out together and participate in structured activities during Kids’ Club (5-7 yrs), Preteen Drop-in Nights (8-11 yrs) and Teen Drop-in Nights (12-18 yrs). Please note kids must be 5yrs old and in kindergarten to attend our programs.

The MOX - Youth Centre

The MOX is the Comox MFRC’s official youth centre space. Conveniently located in the 19 Wing Fitness and Community Centre, the space is fully loaded for Kids Club, Preteen Night, and Teen Night. The space is set up for kindergarten to 18 year olds, and includes Lego, board games, a big screen TV, Xbox 360 with Kinect, Xbox 1, a Wii, computers, ping pong/pool table, air hockey, and foosball table. We also have access to the pool and gym. If you’re feeling crafty, we have an enormous selection of craft supplies for painting, beading, sculpting, scrapbooking and colouring. The drop-in programs are open to both military and non-military youth.

The museum, located just outside the main gate to the Wing, includes the Heritage Park across from the Glacier Gardens Arena. The Heritage Park is home to many historic aircraft that you can see up close, and the Y2K Spitfire Restoration Project.

Fitness, Sport and Recreation → https://www.cafconnection.ca/Comox/Adults/Recreation.aspx FS and R is located in the 19 Wing Fitness and Community Centre. Facilities include a full size gym, squash courts, spin/fitness studio, cardio, weight and spin rooms, a six-lane 25 metre swimming pool, sauna, steam room and change rooms. A number of programs are organized for the military community such as yoga, fitness classes, birthday parties, sports camps, recreation clubs, swim lessons and more. Casual use of the facilities by family members is very affordable with the option of paying drop in fees or purchasing convenient Recreation Passes.

Glacier Greens Golf Course → www.glaciergreens.com – 250-339-6515 Glacier Greens Golf Course is one of the finest courses in the Comox Valley. This beautifully manicured 18 hole Championship course is open year round and the public is always welcome. Glacier Greens offers excellent facilities including a covered range and grass tees, a full service Pro Shop, a fully licensed restaurant with meeting and banquet facilities, and a beautiful outdoor patio overlooking the 18th green. Located on Knight Road just past the Comox Airport.

Health Promotion Phone: 250-339-8211 Local 8577 or 8328 The Strengthening the Forces Health Promotion Program is designed to assist members of the CAF team to develop and maintain a high level of health and well-being by coordinating and delivering health education, workshops, seminars, events and national awareness campaigns. Spouses are welcome to attend most educational sessions, workshops and seminars, when space permits. HP is located in the 19 Wing Fitness and Community Centre.

Tee Pee Park Campground / Air Force Beach Tee Pee Park is an ocean side campground located just a few minutes from 19 Wing. It includes campsites with power and water hook-ups, 3 fully furnished cabins (all you need to bring is food and bedding), a concession, washrooms, showers and laundry facilities. The full campground is open from April to October, with limited winter camping available November – February. Childcare Services Looking for childcare? The Comox MFRC maintains a general list of local babysitters, childcare providers and daycares. Also the Emergency and Respite Childcare Coordinator may be of assistance to families searching for childcare in the Valley.

Family Care Plan (FCP)

If you become ill while your partner is deployed or on duty, where would you turn? Who would care for your children in an emergency? CF members are responsible for ensuring that they have a FCP (DAOD 5044-1) in place. It ensures that members have arranged for childcare should they need to be absent for duty reasons. Fill out your FCP Declaration and return it to your unit. Talk about it with your spouse. Make sure you update it regularly. If you require help to develop a plan, contact us.

Kinnikinnik Childcare Centre (KCC)

Health and Medical Services Provincial Medical Coverage

The Province of BC now waives the 3 month wait time to activate enrolment for military families coming from another Canadian province. Be sure to enquire at the orderly room about this waiver.

Ripple Rock: An underwater mountain that had two peaks (9 feet and 21 feet below the surface) in the Seymour Narrows of the Discovery Passage; a part of the marine trade route from Vancouver and coastal points north. A popular family hike.

Stotan Falls: A terrific place for a refreshing dip in a pot hole, or in some of the slower moving rapids. For the adventurous ones, there are some great falls to jump from.

Goose Spit and the “Stairs”: 165 steps to the main lookout and another 200 m to the top. A regional park popular for beach fires, kite surfers, and boating.

Emergency Food and Water • Drinking Water: At least one litre per person per day • Food: have at least a three day supply of food and water. Choose ready-toeat items that your family will eat, that do not require refrigeration. Canned food: soup, stews, baked beans, pasta, meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, fruit.

Crackers or biscuits. Honey, peanut butter, syrup, jam, salt and pepper, sugar, instant coffee, tea, juice.

• Pets: dog/cat food • Babies/Toddlers: diapers, bottled milk, crayons/paper.

• Equipment: Knives, forks, spoons, disposable cups and plates. Manual can/bottle opener. Fuel stove and fuel (follow manufacturer’s instructions don’t use a BBQ indoors). Waterproof matches/lighter. Plastic garbage bags.

• Other items: prescription medications, extra eye glasses, extra contact lenses/solution (keep at least one week supply of medication in your emergency kit, include a copy of your prescriptions for medicine and glasses.

Note: Replace canned foods and dry goods once a year. Include any other essential items that your family may urgently need should all services suddenly be unavailable for up to one week.
