Robin Hood Festival 2023: retrospective review In this issue of Community Update, we are delighted to choose the Robin Hood Festival for our Commitment to Excellence Award.

The medieval legend of Robin Hood is known all over the world: the famous outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the poor and outwitted The Sherrif of Nottingham. The iconic Major Oak is the centrepiece of Sherwood Forest and is estimated to be anywhere between 800 1,100 years old.

This year saw the 37th annual Robin Hood Festival- a perennial social calendar event for local residents and even sparking international interest. In the 1980’s the festival originally ran as a 7-day event but over time it was extended to incorporate more visitors over the summer holidays.

This year’s event ran from 27 July- 28 August respectively, over five successive weekends.

As well as natural history, there was living history too with the appearance of around 150 re-enactors from nine groups, recreating the 15th Century Wars of the Roses.

The annual Robin Hood Festival is an important cultural event for the Nottinghamshire area and aims to bring the legend of Robin Hood to life in the enchanting Sherwood Forest.

So, it was fitting that the event concluded with the Outlaws’ spectacular arena show, pitting Robin and his Merry Band against the Sheriff and his forces, and a

celebration of Nottinghamshire Day at the Bank Holiday Weekend.

The 38th Robin Hood Festival is expected to take place from July-August 2024 at Sherwood Forest. There is free entry to the forest, with a special event parking charge on some Festival weekends and small costs for activities such as archery.

We asked Rob James, RSPB Communications Officer for Sherwood Forest and Budby South Forest, to assess this year’s festival, “It’s been a fantastic success- really well attended throughout, with really positive feedback. We’ve had a variety of events such as outdoor cinema from Adventure Cinema -showing six films to over 3,000 people including the Disney and 2010 Russell Crowe versions of Robin Hood.

The Sherwood Outlaws arrived with a cross-looking Sheriff of Nottingham and invited visitors to Hunt-the-Outlaw and The Knights of Nottingham wowed the crowds with horseback jousting and combat displays. We had comedy laughter and entertainment from Medieval Maniax, popular entertainer Bill Brookman and jesters What a Palaver.

Touring theatre company ‘This is my Theatre’ adapted the tale of Robin Hood and gave a wonderful open-air performance.”

One of the festival weekends was dedicated to the unique biodiversity of Sherwood Forest, with expert organisations such as the RSPB, Wildlife Trust, Plantlife, Maritime Archaeology and the Conservation Department of Nottingham Trent University. Sherwood Forest is both a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

The ancient oak woodland is home to hundreds of protected bird species like The Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and the majestic Nightjars and fascinating invertebrates such as the Darkling Beetle

Claymills Victorian Pumping Station

Claymills is a restored steam powered pumping station at Stretton, near Burton upon Trent, which was used to pump sewage and brewery waste from the town. Now in its 30th anniversary year of restoration from dereliction, with many extra events to celebrate.

On the weekend of October 28th & 29th, we will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Trust.

For this special occasion, we will be running all four beam engines together, which we believe may be the first time since the engines were installed.

We are also expecting four traction engines to be visiting for the weekend.

Musical entertainment on Saturday will be from a Jazz band and on Sunday a Ukulele band.

They had a milking herd and delivered milk to most of the neighbours and also reared pigs.

William Nixon then built a slaughterhouse and from that beginning, started selling meat.

Gradually the shop was organised and the farms changed to the rearing of beef cattle. There are three grandchildren now running the business.

Madden Swim School’s exciting plans for the Autumn term 2023 In this issue of Community Update, we are delighted to select Madden Swim School with our Commitment to Excellence Award.

Madden Swim School is a wellestablished company running swimming lessons in the West Berkshire and South Oxfordshire areas. Established by couple Rose & Gerry Madden, the school has been run by daughter, Julie Madden for the last few years.

Julie and her experienced team use swimming pools at Downe House School pool in Cold Ash, near Thatcham, the Oratory School pool in Woodcote, near Reading, and a small private pool for baby and toddler lessons in Bucklebury, near Thatcham.

We spoke to owner, Julie for more information, “We offer swimming lessons for all ages: babies and toddlers on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and to Children aged 3.5 - 16 years on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. We also teach adult swimming lessons on Thursdays and Saturdays.

We offer a 12-week term of lessons, that runs concurrently with school term dates, and also offer half-term and holiday intensive week courses. Our 12-week term ends with our certificate fun day, where each swimmer receives their complimentary Swim England certificate and badge, we make a big deal of this day, we get all the parents around the pool, as each child is given their certificate and badge, a huge round of applause and whistling of delight is sent their way. With beaming smiles all round, we get all the swimmers in the pool for games, races, and a pool party to celebrate their success with fun inflatables!

We regularly get a beautiful picture drawn for us, a thank you message, and sometimes a little gift or token of thanks given, none of that is necessary, the children progressing and enjoying the water safely is appreciation enough!”

The desire to refresh their stock levels, inject newness and discover exciting new products for their stores, and experience product in person, created a very confident mood and many exhibiting suppliers secured record numbers and quality of orders.

Creativity, innovation, inspiration, and inventiveness were in abundance throughout the four key show destinations: Home, Gift, Fashion and Design & Source. Overall, feedback from exhibitors has centred on the amount of pent-up demand there is for face-toface trading again.

imme-4 is an independent agency that has chosen to develop brands here in the UK that are, green, good for the planet, with a point of difference.

We showed some of our brands at the Autumn Fair in September and had a fantastic response.

Hydro Herbs Our self-grow Hydro Herb kit is a chance to grow herbs of your choice indoors without the need for soil. Our kits take approximately six weeks to mature after which you can harvest some and they grow back and can last for around 18-24 months. Giving you great-tasting herbs, whenever you need them.

Every component in the kit is either recycled, recyclable or entirely biodegradable, it’s really designed with the environment in mind — ideal for the current times.

Niwa Terrariums NIWA (meaning ‘garden’ in Japanese) was established in 2016, and makes its way from Paris, France. oveLilly is a small but growing business supplying greetings cards to gift shops, post offices and boutiques.

Our cards feature beautiful, quirky, and unique artwork by our talented artist Lilly Wells. We insist on using high quality board and envelopes, as well as biodegradable cellophane to keep our cards in pristine condition.

In 2017 in a bid to help her mental health, Lilly wanted a therapeutic hobby.

She hadn’t painted since completing her GCSE art in 2011, but decided to pick up a paintbrush and try watercolour art. She discovered a natural gift!

While walking our dogs together, myself (Lilly’s mum) and my friend chatted

about Lilly’s newfound talent. Wanting to promote Lilly’s artwork while also establishing a small business, we decided to print cards to sell at local craft fairs. This was a huge success – and so LoveLilly was born.
