BINCHESTER ROMAN FORT Binchester was one of a chain of forts guarding the main north-south Roman road east of the Pennines and was positioned so as to control the crossing of the River Wear. The earliest for built c.AD 79 was more than 7 hectares in size, capable of housing a battle-group two legendary cohorts and one or more units of auxiliary cavalry. The later fort built c. AD 158 was 4 hectares in size and was occupied by cavalry units including one from Spain.

Displayed remains include part of the commanding officers residence with an attached bath building. Excavated in the 1970s the bath building features one of the best preserved examples of a hypocaust (underfloor heating system) in the whole of Britain. During 2018 the timber building protecting the bath was replaced by a new and more robust structure decorated internally in the Roman style affording a much improved visitor experience. Also on display are the stupendously well preserved remains of part of the regimental bath building outside the fort which has walls still standing 2 metres (7 feet) above Roman floor level.

Because of the sharp turn into the access lane, coaches are strongly advised to approach from Bishop Auckland market place via Wear Chare (turn at the Merry Monk Inn).

The wood extends to some 60 acres and has an unusual mix of acid and alkaline soil areas, enabling a much wider range of plants to thrive including unusual trees and shrubs to a wide selection of lilies and other bulbs.

The wood has year-round interest and holds host to many events including an annual rare plants fair, weddings, parties, Forest schools for children, a dog show, outdoor theatre productions, wellness walks, plus celebrations at Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Autumn, and snowdrop time. What’s more there are also special events that showcase the 100 magnolias, some 300 roses and 150 lilies on display.

Going into the latter stages of the year, many spectacular vistas can be seen when the autumn colours appear as the maples, oaks, acers and more of their trees start to transform the way the wood looks.; Autumn bulbs also begin to flower.

In closing we asked Alison O’Hare, Marketing & Events Coordinator how she felt receiving our award, “Being chosen for the Commitment to Excellence is a huge honour. Our team of staff and volunteers work extremely hard to maintain, improve and develop the garden. Rare opportunity to visit traditional Romany wagons and carts The Gordon Boswell Romany Museum is the largest collection of Romany wagons and carts in the UK. It is a fascinating insight into the Romany way of life, often shrouded in mystery for many, this museum wants to invite visitors to learn more about the Romany way of life.

Romany people first came to the UK in the early 1500’s from continental Europe, after leaving northern India in the 12 Century and often sadly faced historical persecution. Hundreds of thousands of European Romani people were killed during The Holocaust and today many in the UK still routinely face prejudice, regarding their historic way of life.

The Gordon Boswell Romany Museum pays homage to this fascinating community through a wonderful collection of wagons and carts and a more personal collection of photos of The Boswell family, dating back to the late 19th century.

Gordon and Margaret Boswell opened the museum on the 25th February 1995, on the date that would have been Gordon’s father’s 100th birthday (Sylvester Gordon Boswell.) The Boswell family are a proud Romany family, dating back centuries, with the photo collection illustrating trips to Appleby Horse Fair and other traditional events.

The Museum is easily accessible: near Spalding, 20 miles north of Peterborough in Lincolnshire. Inside the museum are 12 traditionally painted Romany wagons, carts and vintage Vickers and Westmorland Star trailers.

The collection was built from Gordon’s original collection, with wagons added over time, including a Romany Vardo made in 1875 by Wicks of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. Another highlight includes a wagon owned by beloved Oscar-winning actor Sir John Mills CBE. Interestingly his wife, Mary Hayley Bell wrote the classic fable, “Whistle down the wind” from inside this wagon.

Robin Hood Festival 2023: retrospective review In this issue of Community Update, we are delighted to choose the Robin Hood Festival for our Commitment to Excellence Award.

The medieval legend of Robin Hood is known all over the world: the famous outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the poor and outwitted The Sherrif of Nottingham. The iconic Major Oak is the centrepiece of Sherwood Forest and is estimated to be anywhere between 800 1,100 years old.

This year saw the 37th annual Robin Hood Festival- a perennial social calendar event for local residents and even sparking international interest. In the 1980’s the festival originally ran as a 7-day event but over time it was extended to incorporate more visitors over the summer holidays.

This year’s event ran from 27 July- 28 August respectively, over five successive weekends.

As well as natural history, there was living history too with the appearance of around 150 re-enactors from nine groups, recreating the 15th Century Wars of the Roses.

The annual Robin Hood Festival is an important cultural event for the Nottinghamshire area and aims to bring the legend of Robin Hood to life in the enchanting Sherwood Forest.

So, it was fitting that the event concluded with the Outlaws’ spectacular arena show, pitting Robin and his Merry Band against the Sheriff and his forces, and a

celebration of Nottinghamshire Day at the Bank Holiday Weekend.

The 38th Robin Hood Festival is expected to take place from July-August 2024 at Sherwood Forest. There is free entry to the forest, with a special event parking charge on some Festival weekends and small costs for activities such as archery.

We asked Rob James, RSPB Communications Officer for Sherwood Forest and Budby South Forest, to assess this year’s festival, “It’s been a fantastic success- really well attended throughout, with really positive feedback. We’ve had a variety of events such as outdoor cinema from Adventure Cinema -showing six films to over 3,000 people including the Disney and 2010 Russell Crowe versions of Robin Hood.

The Sherwood Outlaws arrived with a cross-looking Sheriff of Nottingham and invited visitors to Hunt-the-Outlaw and The Knights of Nottingham wowed the crowds with horseback jousting and combat displays. We had comedy laughter and entertainment from Medieval Maniax, popular entertainer Bill Brookman and jesters What a Palaver.

Touring theatre company ‘This is my Theatre’ adapted the tale of Robin Hood and gave a wonderful open-air performance.”

One of the festival weekends was dedicated to the unique biodiversity of Sherwood Forest, with expert organisations such as the RSPB, Wildlife Trust, Plantlife, Maritime Archaeology and the Conservation Department of Nottingham Trent University. Sherwood Forest is both a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

The ancient oak woodland is home to hundreds of protected bird species like The Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and the majestic Nightjars and fascinating invertebrates such as the Darkling Beetle

Jolly Giraffe turns 6 years old Community Update is proud to present Jolly Giraffes with our Commitment to Excellence Award.

Jolly Giraffes is a family run business that took over from the original ‘Mischief Makers’ play centre in 2017. Based in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, Jolly Giraffes is well-known for its personable touch that comes as a direct result of the great relationship between owner’s mum and daughter - Christine and Rachel.

“Our relationship is really strong and this is clear to the success of the business.

We want people to come in as customers but leave as a friend. We also have a fantastic team who really engage with our guests which is why our parties are really popular,” stated Rachel.

Jolly Giraffe host a range of parties in a separate spacious party room that is brightly coloured and full of fun.

Throughout the party there are games, dances and lots of exciting ways to celebrate your child’s magical birthday.

hey say absence makes the heart grow fonder and this certainly felt like an accurate sentiment at Glee last week, when the garden retail sector was finally able to reunite after a two-year hiatus.

Millions of new British gardeners have made the past two years, even with all its many challenges, a period of tremendous growth and innovation for the industry and Glee is the most important launch platform, where suppliers can bring new products to market and engage with the retail trade.

Featuring over 300 brands, 125 of which were brand new to the show this year, the longanticipated return of Glee as an in-person event was positively received from all corners of the retail sector: from traditional garden centres, DIY Stores and farm shops to high street retailers, department stores, builders' merchants and thriving e-commerce sites.

As the first occasion since 2019, when so many gardening brands and retailers could meet face to face under one roof, it wasn't surprising that Glee opened its doors on Tuesday, September 14th 2021 to a large and eager crowd, who helped create “the busiest start to Glee

We had a cosy chat with Colleen to find out what brides can expect on wedding days, “I offer a fully-bespoke service where clients can contact me for individual quotes makeup/hair/beauty services for weddings. For weddings, I provide trials well in advance of the big day, services on the wedding/celebration morning, as well as beauty treatments in the lead up to the event. I cater for large groups as well as elopement services for just the bride herself.

I love the atmosphere of a wedding morning, and am there to help everyone feel their absolute best, rather than being one of many suppliers asking questions and adding to the stress levels! On the day I will travel to the bride’s preferred location, ready to start at an agreed time, and will stay with them and the bridal party until they are ready to leave, providing any final touches (or tissues!) they might need.

If required, I can also be on hand after the ceremony for touch ups, or if they’d like to update their makeup for the evening reception – perhaps a smokier eye or a vampy bold lip to amp-up the night-time look, or a softer, more relaxed hairstyle to dance the night away!”

Madden Swim School’s exciting plans for the Autumn term 2023 We are thrilled to be able to share our exciting plans for the Autumn term 2023!

Our Children’s swimming lessons are suitable for ages 3.5 years to 17 years.

These lessons are popular due to the quick progression our swimmers make and our teacher to pupil ratio. We have two locations for our weekly term-time lessons; The Oratory School pool in Woodcote on Friday and Sunday afternoons, and at Downe House School pool, Cold Ash on Saturday mornings, and Monday and Thursday afternoons.

The 12-week term cost is £155 and these lessons run between September to December. We keep sibling lessons together at the same time, as we have several different ability groups swimming in different lanes of the pool at the same time. At our final lesson of the term; our end of term certificate fun day, is when all swimmers receive a complimentary official Swim England certificate and badge noting their progress achieved, and we have a pool party celebration with games, races and inflatable fun.

Our swim school has an amazing team of passionate teachers with endless enthusiasm and patience.

Our Baby & Toddler swimming lessons are here to stay! We teach babies from 4 months to toddlers up to 3.5 years. Parents join us in the pool for these 30-minute weekly lessons. These are available Tuesdays or Thursdays from 11am. Lessons will be at a lovely, very warm private pool in Chapel Row, Bucklebury, near Thatcham.

The 9-week course cost will be £140 and will run September to November.

These 30 minute weekly lessons are taught by experienced teachers with special interests in teaching the younger swimmers.

New* Adult swimming lessons are here at last! These weekly lessons will be on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm or Saturday mornings from 11am. We will have a ladies only session available too, if preferred. There will be 2 group lesson options available; beginners or improvers. Lessons will be at the wonderful facilities of Downe House School pool in Cold Ash, near Thatcham.

The 12 week course cost will be £228.

The course will run from September to December.

lessons will be available 23-27th October at The Oratory School pool at 10am and 10:30am, and at Downe House School pool at 1pm and 1:30pm. The cost for the 5-day course is £65 per swimmer. We have planned this intensive crash course during the October half term as these lessons greatly compliment the weekly lessons, as well as accommodating those unable to swim regularly, to provide a boost to swimming abilty. Swimmers greatly benefit from this course; they progress in confidence, water skills, stroke technique, stamina and water safety. This is the perfect course for all levels, from complete beginners to our most advanced deep end swimmers.

Our deep end swimmers enjoy wearing flippers and having a fast paced fun week. We are always impressed and overwhelmed by the amount of progress our swimmers make in the 5 days.

Countdown commences to annual NEMSA show and sale season ‘The countdown is on to the annual high profile, ever-popular North of England Mule Sheep Association (NEMSA) show and sales season this autumn when users of the all-purpose Mule across the Country will again be flocking north to source their annual crops of shearlings, ewes and gimmer lambs.

As NEMSA’s national chairman, Cumbrian sheep farmer and long-time Mule breeder Jonathan Hodgson comments: “The North Country Mule remains one of the greatest and most versatile sheep breeds in the world for commercial crossing. They are prolific, excellent mothers, milky, constantly producing two fat lambs, easy to work with, easy to handle.

“They are superb all-rounders and have served countless end users so well over many generations, notably our southern customers, for whom the Mule continues to be ideally suited to local breeding conditions. We once again look forward to welcoming buyers and friends old and new this coming autumn.

“With favourable conditions, lambing this year went very well and prospective purchasers can rest assured that our members have again pulled out all the stops to ensure their charges arrive at the annual sales in their usual significant numbers and in tip-top condition, ideally prepared for the job in hand.”
