Feeding Families and Fueling Hope

Annual Report 2016-2017

The Future of FISH

Board and Staff

My name is Kurt Sava, and I’m proud to serve as the Chair of the Board of Trustees for FISH. As I write this letter, FISH is about to embark on a new chapter in our long history of serving the Broomfield community. While we continue to help more clients in more ways than ever before, we will soon be moving into a new facility, provided to us through the generosity of the City and County of Broomfield. This move will allow us to offer our clients more choice, more dignity, and more access to the services they need to become self-sufficient. Until now, FISH has utilized roughly 7,500 square feet of space, spread among four separate locations. Because of limited space, clients have only been able to visit FISH once a month. A recent survey revealed that more than half of our families reported going hungry in between visits to FISH. Our new space will allow us the capability to store and provide more food-- including fresh, healthy options—and have clients visit twice a month or more as needed so they don’t go hungry. Additionally, having all of our operations under one roof will make it possible for us to collaborate with other organizations to better serve our clients. One example of this is our partnership with Broomfield Early Childhood Council (BECC). Often FISH sees families with young children who struggle with the costs of child care. In the new building, BECC will have shared space and FISH will be able to partner with them to help families find affordable, quality child care. None of this would be possible without the enduring support of you, our neighbors. FISH is blessed to be the beneficiary of time, talent, and treasure from you and for that we are deeply grateful. As an organization that depends on more than 200+ volunteers, we are truly reliant on your unwavering support. On behalf of the Board, our staff, and our clients, thank you for helping us to help our neighbors in need.

Sincerely,

Kurt Sava Board Chair

90¢

of every dollar in 2016 went directly to benefit neighbors in need!

More than 200 volunteers contributed more than 20,000 hours of their time to FISH in 2016.

49 individuals, families, organizations and businesses participated in the “Adopt-A-Shelf” program to make sure essential items are always available at FISH.

The new “Break from Hunger” program at FISH connects our most vulnerable populations-children and seniors-with the food they need. Last year we served 1,200 children and seniors through this program.

More than 50 schools, businesses, and civic groups visited FISH to learn about the importance of giving back to their community.

FISH collaborates with more than 30 partner organizations to support our mission. New this year, we worked with the Justice and Mercy Legal Aid Clinic to provide free legal support.

Trends

A New “Tank” for FISH

FISH has seen a slow, but steady increase in the number of Broomfield residents who need support. On average in 2016, we provided food and other emergency assistance to 950 people each month, and more than half were children, senior citizens and those with a disability. In the past four years, the unduplicated number of residents served has increased slightly, but the total pounds of food distributed rose more dramatically. One noticeable trend is the skyrocketing cost of living and lack of affordable housing in Broomfield. Many families who visit FISH are working two or three jobs to make ends meet, but are still struggling to pay rent and utilities. Since the start of 2017, FISH has witnessed a surge in the number of residents needing help with housing and utilities assistance, as well as food.

Thanks to the City and County of Broomfield and the generous support from the Lakin Family, Broomfield FISH is excited to announce that we are moving to a new “tank”! In 2017 FISH will be consolidating all of our operations under one roof at #6 Garden Center, the former Broomfield Health and Human Services Building. As a result of the move, there will be other big changes happening at FISH. We will finally have a loading dock, so we can unload and store food donations from our truck more efficiently. We will have a new walk-in refrigerator and freezer so we can offer more fresh, healthy food choices. We will have a self-shop “Marketplace” so people can choose the food they want and limit waste. And, we will have additional partner office space to connect families to critical resources needed to help them become more self-sufficient.

“I never thought this could happen to me, but here I was 50 years old and living in my car. I was becoming hopeless and felt like there was no end in sight. In desperation, I went to FISH. They provided a variety of food, offered guidance, and showed me that somebody cared.” Anonymous Client
