LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
DEAR PARENTS AND FRIENDS OF COMMUNITY SCHOOL OF NAPLES,
I invite you all to cast your minds back, if I may, to where you were and what you were doing almost 40 years ago.
In 1982, a group of enthusiastic and visionary parents in Naples, Florida embarked upon a bold and wonderful educational journey for the benefit of their school-age children. It began quietly with a small number of pioneer teachers in a few rented rooms in a church on Seagate Drive, progressing through to an eventual move to our current plot of land in 1984 and which right now, almost exactly 40 years later, has resulted in our school becoming one of the most sought-after, top-performing independent schools in this state. That is quite a journey, and an even better legacy left for us by those generous, inspirational founders of CSN.
Community School of Naples celebrates its 40th anniversary this school year (1982-2022) with much in our past to be proud of and with continuing high aspirations for our future.
Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year CSN has continued to forge ahead on all fronts. Record student enrollment, outstanding test scores and university placements, low faculty turnover, and the completion of two more magnificent campus buildings on the horizon: the Lower School Dining Hall and the Fitness and Training Center, both of which will be ready and open for use in Summer 2022. Our COVID-19 protocols have also proven to be very effective and successful, ensuring the safety of our entire community. We are the envy of many schools in Florida and beyond. It is truly an exciting time to be at CSN.
Needless to say, there is an organic link between the success which our new
buildings represent, and the superior classroom performance every day of fantastic teachers across all divisions of the school. Without the latter, the former is unlikely to exist. Without caring classroom practitioners and first-rate subject specialists, there is unlikely to be a high level of parent satisfaction and donor participation to support needed capital expansion projects. Therefore, at the base of our success is something very simple: good teaching and learning and an aspiration towards academic excellence. From that standpoint, CSN’s focus and mission have remained unchanged for 40 years.
As per last year, you will notice that we are again featuring two publications in one, in that our 2020-21 CSN Donor Report is included as part of this edition of The Chronicle. On behalf of our students and all my teaching and non-teaching colleagues at CSN, I wish to extend my sincere thanks to each and every one of our parents and friends for their tremendous support throughout the past year. You cannot know how appreciated we all feel by your donations to our school and by your support of our work with your children. Thank you!
As the holiday season begins, I am humbled and proud to express my gratitude to all in our CSN community for your continuing support of our school, and to reaffirm the commitment of my colleagues and myself to the continuing happy, learning lives of all our children. Every student, every day. Thank you once again, and welcome to the Winter 2021 edition of The Chronicle.
Kind regards,
DR. DAVID WATSON Head of School
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
JOHN N. ALLEN President of the Board of Trustees Community School of Naples
DEAR COMMUNITY SCHOOL FAMILIES & FRIENDS,
During this 40th anniversary, we have the opportunity to look back on our proud past and reflect on our bold future. From the beginning, our founders, faculty, and families have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to academic excellence. Longevity, loyalty, and gratitude have framed the culture of giving, either in time, talent or treasure. This year, we celebrate our founders’ commitment to making their vision a reality, as well as all of the community members who have made CSN the school it is today.
I am pleased to share with you the 2020-21 Celebration of Support. We are all a valuable part of a big picture and all gifts help us deliver our mission by supporting the people, places, and programs that impact every student, every day. Your generosity plays a crucial role in carrying out the mission of CSN. As we work to achieve our goals, we look forward to fostering stewardship and inspiring families to make giving to the Fund for Excellence a priority every year.
The current Board of Trustees are proud and committed to honoring the mission of Community School of Naples. We are grateful for the courage, passion, and vision demonstrated by our founders in 1982, and for the generosity and commitment of everyone listed within these pages. We hope you will be inspired to support CSN now and in future chapters as we build together an even better school.
Sincerely,
JOHN N. ALLEN President of the Board of Trustees Community School of Naples
TIME & PLACE
Local entrepreneur Tony Ridgway is best known in Naples for his 50-year tenure as a restaurateur. If, however, you notice the Ridgway name around Community School’s campus, it’s in recognition of his years of service as a parent and as President of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Ridgway was initially drawn to Community School, which was relatively newly established at the time, as a parent of young children, both of whom would go on to graduate as lifers (Caroline ‘98 and Will ‘01). He was further motivated to lend his time and energy contributing to a cause he has deemed one of the most important of his life.
Like many of his peers, Mr. Ridgway attests to the collaboration that helped Community School survive its uncertain genesis. While the founders always believed in their vision, it would take time to build a student body sufficient to meet operational and financial requirements. Newly minted as Board President, Mr. Ridgway took seriously the school’s founding values, which he describes as “small classes, a safe and loving
environment where children were respected, where education was paramount, [and] where educational standards would be extraordinary.” Beyond that, he stipulates that the primary requirement for involvement was that “you came to the Community School with only one purpose and that was to give 110 or 120 or 150 percent.”
Alongside Mr. James Landi, who assumed the headship shortly after Mr. Ridgway was named Board President, and his fellow Board members, Mr. Ridgway helped steward the school to solvency within only a few years. This was a turning point when, suddenly, parents recognized Community School as the premier educational institution in Naples, and clamored for spots for their children.
Mr. Ridgway stepped down from the Board in the mid-'90s, but surely his leadership contributed to the school’s essential growth during a critical period.
Caroline Ridgway interviews her father, Tony, about the immense impact he has had on the school.
CSN WORLD CLASS POLO
In 1984, Dr. Roger Williams, one of Community School of Naples’ first founders, set out to raise funds for the school and simultaneously give Naples a taste of “The Sport of Kings.” He organized an extraordinary polo event in which spectators watched under “the big tent,” while sipping champagne and sampling a variety of epicurean delights. A few years later, Mr. Fred Pezeshkan began chairing the event, introducing a Grand Champion Hour, which added a live auction and Reverse Raffle to the afternoon. Over the
years, several key parents and friends of CSN have stepped in to chair, oversee, and contribute to the success of the event. This year, as CSN celebrates a very special 40-year anniversary, Stephanie and Fred Pezeshkan, Jenny and Kermit Sutton, Marni and Neil Chur, and Becky and John Allen merged decades-old traditions with fresh ideas as they reunited former committee members to plan a spectacular afternoon filled with the spirit of World Class Polo.
World Class Polo, benefiting the Community School of Naples Financial Aid Program, was graciously hosted by Jenny and Kermit Sutton on their breathtaking Wrenwood Farms property. With this stunning backdrop, this premier event began with a champagne reception amidst an antique car collection. The memorable afternoon continued as guests enjoyed a thrilling polo game and fabulous cuisine in a luxurious double-decker tent.
Polo cannot help but captivate; it is a game of speed, finesse, and courage for both horse and rider. Spectators witnessed an exhibition presented by the Sarasota Polo Club that involves physical contact and astonishing stamina. This was a unique opportunity to experience the harmony between horse and rider, up close, and appreciate the oldest organized sport in the world.

THE STORY OF THE BELL TOWER
AS NARRATED BY JAMES LANDI, HEAD OF SCHOOL 1986-2001
In the spring of 2021, Ms. Caroline Ridgway interviewed Mr. James Landi to get his invaluable perspective on the evolution of Community School, based on his 15-year tenure as Head of School. During their conversation, Mr. Landi related this story of how the Bell Tower came to be a fixture on campus:
The Bell Tower is an interesting story. My best friend in my life and somebody whom I miss every day, Johnny Zeller, and I were out to lunch one hot summer's day. It was in the spring of ‘86. There was a used furniture store on the east side of town, and out front there was some stuff, and there was a locomotive bell. I stopped the car and I said, “We're going to buy that bell.”
John asked, “Why?” and I said, “We're gonna use that at the school, I can see that as something that would be really cool for the kids to do.” I was thinking we could put a pipe in the ground and ring the bell when we win a game or maybe change classes. I was thinking that this is something kids can do.
At that point we had an 8th grade class, they were about to graduate and wanted to do something to commemorate and so I thought the bell would be something that would be kind of a gift to them, so I bought the bell. I think it was like 75 bucks.
I had it sitting in front of the little administration building, and people said, “What's that for?” And at a PTO meeting, I told them what I was envisioning and everyone thought it was a cool idea.
A few days later my administrative assistant said, “Mr. Landi, there's a Mr. Neubek here to see you.” So I checked my directory. It was Sharon Neubek’s husband-- she had been at the PTO meeting earlier that week. Moments later, a gentleman came into my office with a rolled-up sheet of paper and he said, “Mr. Landi, I’m Frank Neubek. I want to show you something.” He
unrolled the paper and I saw the Bell Tower. I just about fell out of my chair. I said, “When can we have this thing?” Graduation was in five weeks. He said, “I can help you do this, but can't do the whole thing myself.”
Kate Davis’ father was in the cement business, so he poured the foundation, somebody else bought the poles, and in no time we were starting to put this project together. Frank had drawn this rather complex piece that was wrought iron that tied the structure together and one day he came rolling up in Sharon’s brand new BMW. Johnny and I met him in the parking lot and Frank said, “I got your piece of ironwork here, I got it done in North Carolina.”
The bell ringing tradition continues on in 2021 as Lower School students are invited to ring the bell, signaling the start of school, each Monday and Friday.
I looked in the back of the car and there it was, the piece of metal that Frank imagined. Frank said, “Let's get it out of the car.” Well, wouldn't you know, we tore right into the headliner of Sharon’s new car! Frank simply said, “Oh, don't worry about it, it's nothing.”
So the bell tower got done and we were very, very pleased with ourselves. We did something to commemorate the graduating class, something permanent, and something for which we were very proud.
The next year, we decided that we were going to have the bell ring every time class changed, and it got to be a little bit too much, so we did just lunchtime.

SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON THEATREZONE
“We are thrilled to return to presenting large-scale productions for our audience’s enjoyment,” says Mr. Mark Danni, TheatreZone’s Founding Artistic Director. “We’re planning a blockbuster Season 17 with a world premiere, a variety of traditional shows, audience favorites, and shows that may be new to some audience members.” Now in its 17th season, TheatreZone is extending its arms to include more and more CSN students. The April production of The Bridges of
Madison County will star two Broadway veterans and Leonard Allen (‘24) and Siena Worland (‘22)! Siena also started in Tonya & Nancy: Rock Opera which starred Andrea McArdle, Broadway’s original Annie. Already an Equity Actress, Siena is on the road to theater stardom as she plans to continue her theater career in college. Mr. Mark Danni re-worked the new musical with the producers and authors for potential future New York productions.
Alumni are also involved in TheatreZone productions. Raquel Ferreira (‘20) and Luke Danni (‘20) were in the production of Gypsy. Wonderful Town featured alumni Jack Norkeliunas (‘18) and Maxine Danni (‘21).
LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIENCE
Alexandra Lagergren ('23), is working as a summer intern for TheatreZone! She is working alongside TheatreZone's production team organizing the prop, set, furniture, lighting, and costume rooms gaining much experience and learning about the theater world.

CSN TRADITIONS
LIFE IS ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS, AND BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS IS A PRIORITY FOR US. FOSTERING A CULTURE OF RESPECT IN INDIVIDUAL CLASSROOMS AND THROUGHOUT OUR SCHOOL TAKES COMMITMENT AND CONSISTENCY FROM ALL OF US - ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS, SUPPORT STAFF, PARENTS, AND STUDENTS.
Teaching is much more than helping students learn and remember facts. Recent research indicates that academics and empathy need not be viewed as mutually exclusive choices. Bridget Cooper, director of the Centre for Pedagogy and the University of Sunderland, U.K., suggests that modeling and fostering empathy in a school can actually improve academic achievement. Her research found that caring interactions positively impacted students’ personal, social, moral, and academic development.
As we reflect on CSN’s 40th anniversary, we think about how many CSN traditions have now been celebrated for decades. We see photos from the 1980s to the 2020s, and while styles and community members have changed, joy is present in each photo throughout the years.
FRESHMEN DAY OF SERVICE
For over 20 years, CSN freshmen have kicked off their US community service by taking part in a collective service opportunity. Dubbed the “Freshmen Day of Service,” the entire class works with a local organization to help out those in need.
On Wednesday, October 13, the class of 100 students took part in a meal-packing experience with the local non-profit Meals of Hope, which focuses on bringing together people in the SWFL community to end hunger. Founder and CEO Stephen Popper, and staff member Bobbi Bird, came to speak to the students about the mission of Meals of Hope, and how they work to combat food insecurity by preparing one of five types of nutritious meals that are then donated to Feeding America Food Banks. Many of the students were surprised to learn about the high number of people who are food-insecure in SWFL. With a strong desire to do something about this issue, our students then got to work. In total, students packaged 24,000 meals of fortified macaroni and cheese for those in need in Collier County. Set up in an assembly line format, students carefully weighed and scooped macaroni and soy protein into a bag, included fortified cheese sauce, properly sealed the bags, labeled them, and boxed them up. The freshmen class also presented Meals of Hope with a check to cover the production and shipping costs of all the materials they used. Great work freshmen!
SHEA DAY
CSN remembers Shea Maurer every year around her birthday by wearing purple, her favorite color, and with a Lower School talent show.
On Dec. 3, CSN threw a celebration in honor of Shea Maurer at the Shea Maurer Memorial Amphitheater. Shea would have been in the senior Class of ’20. As is tradition, Mrs. Richardson presented a show featuring some of our very talented 5th grade students singing and dancing. The audience was especially moved when Riley Maurer '24, Shea’s niece, performed a beautiful vocal solo entitled A Safe Place To Land. The 5th grade chorus concluded the program with a spirited Just Sing. Shea most definitely shines on at CSN.
As a CSN tradition, every fall the senior class selects three adjectives that best describe their “singular identity.”
These words are presented to the Upper School student body and senior parents during the formal ceremony.
THE CLASS OF 2022 SELECTED: VERSATILE AMBITIOUS SPUNKY
THANKSGIVING FEAST
November is a perfect month to reflect on our relationships and our culture; it’s a time to be thankful. CSN traditions, like the Thanksgiving Feast, give us a reminder that our school abounds with learning, love, and joy- and many positive relationships.
The Lower School community gathered for the traditional Thanksgiving Feast! PreK3 through fifth grade families delivered yummy foods for the students, teachers, and parents to enjoy. During the Feast, students were encouraged to participate with the Thankful Pumpkin, where they wrote one thing they were thankful for on a giant, festive pumpkin. Words such as “CSN,” “my teachers,” “friends,” “family,” and even “the playground” were recurring. Before the Feast, families donated frozen turkeys for St. Matthew’s House! We are thankful to bring back this tradition and celebrate all we have to be grateful for at CSN.
SENIOR INVESTITURE
During the 1997 investiture, Board President, Mr. Pat Stranahan, told the seniors that staying in close touch with their core values during the next decade will serve them well. The value about which he felt most strongly was civility and the “open-minded willingness to presume that those with differing views from our own are in good faith and deserve to be treated with respect.”
Senior Investiture has been a tradition at CSN since the first senior class in 1996. Since then, it is celebrated as a right of passage for seniors who accept their mantle of leadership and their position as role models for the entire school.
STORYBOOK DAY PARADE
Since 1994 Lower School students, inspired by their favorite literary character, have come to school on October 31 wearing costumes for the Storybook Day Parade. This is a beloved tradition designed to foster the love of reading in our youngest students. It is more than a simple parade at the end of each October, it is the celebration and culmination of one of our favorite units of study! During the month of October, students in every grade level study characters from books in the reading workshop. In a spiral progression, our teachers plan together to teach our children how to better understand their books through their characters.

FACULTY FEATURE
FAVORITE BOOK
My favorite book is Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer by James L. Swanson. As a history teacher, I love reading accounts of incredible events that have occurred in our world.
FAVORITE SONG
My favorite song is Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. This song brings back wonderful memories of cheering on my hometown Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park and celebrating with all my friends and family at my wedding where the song played a special role.
FAVORITE FOOD FROM THE DINING HALL
The Cuban sandwiches are fantastic!
MR. MICHAEL CARPENTIER
DIRECTOR OF THE JULIET COLLIER SPROUL CENTER FOR COMMUNITY & GLOBAL IMPACT
FAVORITE SPOT ON CSN CAMPUS
My favorite spot on campus is definitely Neubek Point. I am fortunate to have my office be very close to this picturesque view of the LMA beautifully rising above the fountain and the pond. I love listening to the music from band classes that wafts across the water from the LMA every morning.
WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I am most excited to support student leadership opportunities because the empathy and experience students develop by participating in service initiatives can help change their perspectives. If students are given the opportunity to gain essential leadership skills in the process by helping to design and lead these service opportunities, then the impact could truly become life-changing.
ONE GOAL YOU HAVE FOR JCS
I would like for the JCS Center to help every student at CSN have at least one perspective-shifting educational experience outside the walls of the classroom before they graduate.
SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULDN’T EXPECT ABOUT CSN
I was shocked to see how deeply connected our students are in the local community. Every organization I hear about in town seems to have CSN students volunteering either their time, talent, or treasure.
WORD OF ADVICE FOR YOUR SENIOR SELF
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Sometimes it is helpful to look at the world from a long-term perspective before we let something minor affect our mood at the moment.
THE JULIET COLLIER SPROUL CENTER FOR
COMMUNITY & GLOBAL IMPACT
The Juliet Collier Sproul Center for Community and Global Impact was founded in 2021 and its mission is to engage the entire CSN community in purposeful acts of service and leadership. Ms. Judy Sproul is a CSN Founder who seeks to help students discover their individual potential and to contribute meaningfully to the community, the environment, and the world beyond. With “community” in our school’s name, the work of this center is viewed as a signature program that helps to create responsible global citizens through the implementation of purposeful service in the curriculum that will extend outside of the classroom. This center oversees service-learning opportunities in all three divisions of the school and assists in service-related college advising. The work of the center is overseen by its newly hired director, Mr. Michael Carpentier, and long-time CSN Middle School teacher, Mrs. Jimmi Stevens, serving as the assistant director.
By establishing community partners, the center can create both volunteer and internship opportunities for our students. We seek to create transformational leaders who utilize connections initially formed through the center to pursue their passions to form a vocational identity. This transformational pursuit starts through character development and values-based education in the Lower School, continues in the Middle School with more community-based service opportunities, and culminates in the Upper School with students developing and leading their own service initiatives. The center seeks to create a structured and intentional pipeline for students to develop into the leaders of tomorrow.
Currently, many of the service opportunities center around environmental responsibility, since the unique environment of SWFL is at the heart of our broader community. Other service has involved veterans affairs, teaching English as a second language, supporting local food pantries, and much more. We seek to create service opportunities for all members of our community including faculty, staff, and parents, so as to give students wonderful role models who lead by example and illustrate that a commitment to service and the world around us is a life-long pursuit.
Some community partners the center works with include the Meals for Hope, Audubon of the Western Everglades, St. Matthew’s House, the Coral Restoration Foundation, the Naples Botanical Garden, the FGCU Water School, the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, the Holocaust Museum, Habitat for Humanity, Honor Flight, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, Artis-Naples, and many more.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SPIRIT WEEK
September 24 has been designated as a Global Day of Action, for urgent and just climate action. My peers and I tried our best to play our part and participated in a mass walk-out. There were around 20 participants, ranging from grades 9-12. We had amazing discussions, and came up with fantastic ideas, to benefit our in-school community, and humanity itself. I am so grateful to have been able to organize this event, and I am even more grateful to the people who showed up. I hope to help orchestrate more events such as this one, for CSN. The most important takeaway from this event is to always speak up for whatever injustices you witness, you can always make a change if you are truly determined. As MLK Jr. once said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
-Nuha Rahman ‘25
During Spirit Week, MS students competed in a “penny war” to raise money for a local charity. Sixth-grade students showed leadership in this event by collecting 23,847 pennies, helping to raise over $900. In honor of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, student council representatives voted to donate the money to the Collier County Freedom Memorial, located on Golden Gate Parkway. The memorial pays tribute to members of our armed forces who have sacrificed their lives in the defense of our nation, along with the law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and civilians who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Mr. Gerald Sanford, retired NYC and Naples firefighter and veteran, was present at the MS assembly to accept this check. The money was donated his honor, and in honor of Mr. Kevin McAdams, also a retired NYC firefighter, and Mr. Nicky Brandemarti, who lost his life while working in the towers.
A THOUGHT-PROVOKING DAY
Upper School students heard local Holocaust survivor, Mr. Heinz Wartski, describe his experiences in Europe in the 1930s and ‘40s. Students from Rho Kappa, the CSN Social Studies Honor Society, welcomed Mr. Wartski and helped to lead this moving assembly. Born in Danzig in 1929, Mr. Wartski survived the Nazi regime in the 1930s. Upon his father’s release from a concentration camp in 1939, the Wartski family moved to Italy and then to America in 1949. Mr. Wartski later joined the American army and served in the Korean War. The speaker ended his presentation by giving this advice to the students: “We all have a mission: we all are here to save the world, but we cannot do it with hatred.”
After the assembly, students gathered in their advisories to discuss the impact of the Holocaust and the experiences of Mr. Wartski. Students also learned about the Jewish High Holy Days through several experiences created by the CSN Spectrum Club. They played a Kahoot that covered Jewish customs and holidays, received a card with their initials written in Hebrew, and snacked on sticks of honey. Spectrum Club students wanted to be both respectful of Mr. Wartski’s experiences of the Holocaust, and also celebrate aspects of Jewish culture that they feel are sometimes overshadowed in history classes by the tragedies of the 1930s and ‘40s. A big thank you to students of Rho Kappa and Spectrum Club, their advisors Mrs. Herting and Ms. O’Brien, and to the JCS Center for helping to plan this incredible event.
CSN parent Kevin McAdams (Jamison ‘20 and Jackson ‘23) spoke at special MS and US assemblies about his experiences as a New York City firefighter during 9/11. None of our students were alive when this event took place, but that makes it even more important for them to learn about it. In this way, students can better understand the current world and appreciate the historic nature of this event. Before the assembly, students discussed 9/11 in advisory, which provided time for more discussion and sharing. Mr. Kevin McAdams, retired FDNY, retired Navy Presidential Honor Guardsman, and currently Managing Director of 400 Capital in NYC served as a New York City firefighter FDNY for 10 years. He worked in ENGINE 93/ LADDER 45 in Washington Heights, one of the busiest firehouses in NYC. On average, there would be one emergency call every hour within a 24-hour period.
MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOD DRIVE
A big THANK YOU to everyone who brought in food as part of the Middle School Spirit Week activities. We donated over 1500 pounds of peanut butter, tuna fish, pasta and rice to the Harry Chapin Food Bank, which will help feed people in Collier County. We are so proud of our Middle School families for their support in making this happen!
ROBOTICS TOURNAMENT
The Best in Southwest VEX Robotics tournament was held recently in the Moe Kent Family Fieldhouse. Congratulations to all participants and winners. Special congratulations to Team 94M (Megan D'Souza '25, Melita D'Souza '25, and Felicie Hoffmann '24) for winning the design award which qualifies them for States!
CELEBRATING LIFERS
Fifth grade lifers are taking a trip down memory lane as they reflect on their time at CSN and reconnect with their PreK3 teachers! The Class of 2029 has 11 lifers, and we look forward to seeing all they accomplish during their education at CSN.
GRATEFUL GATHERINGS
Grateful Gatherings in the Grove have been a welcoming morning event for each grade level! It is an opportunity to gather, meet new families, and reconnect with returning families with sweet fall treats.
CAMPUS REFLECTIONS
Congratulations to Wren DeHaan and Heloise Hoffmann for earning PERFECT scores on their AP Research exams! Wren and Heloise are among an elite group of students in the world to earn every point possible on the AP Exam, receiving the maximum score on each portion of the exam. We applaud these two exceptional students, along with Dr. Scherff’s devotion to teaching, engaging, and challenging students!
HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTIONS
On Thursday, Sept. 23, 89 Upper School students were inducted into 13 honor societies. Parents of inductees attended and cheered on the scholars. This great annual tradition was another success!
AP SCORE SUCCESS
NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS
Congratulations to the five members of the Class of 2022 recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program! The Semifinalists are William Bedford and Heloise Hoffmann (top 1% in FL), and Commended Scholars are Brent Bartholomew, Garrison Leach, and Benjamin Ouaou (top 3% in the U.S.).
Pictured: Benjamin Ouaou, Nick Molloy, Garrison Leach, Heloise Hoffmann, William Bedford, and Brent Bartholomew.
THE PROJECT CONTINUES
When Adrianna Carvelli (‘26) was in 5th grade, she painted Mr. Sanford for the CSN book honoring SWFL veterans that was published in 2019: Through Their Eyes: The Community School of Naples Veterans Project. Three years later, Adrianna is now interviewing Mr. Sanford about a book he had co-authored! We love to see these community members reconnecting.
EXPERIENTAL LEARNING
The first Environmental Club outing of 2021-22 was a Horseshoe Crab Volunteer Training in Punta Gorda. Participants Charlotte Bedford, Ali Lagergren, Ovie, and Maayan Levy learned about the biology of these living fossils, how Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) manages horseshoe crab populations, and how citizen scientists can contribute to horseshoe crab vitality.
Fifth-grader Ovie has been participating in MS Environmental Club activities for two years and is excited to see a Lower School club develop. He shared, “This will get more kids involved and have activities that will make them aware of our ocean, our planet, and the importance of creating change and healing the world in any way possible. The earth is what we all have in common, and we have to protect it so we can have a future and a better life!”
STAYCATIONS ELECTIVE
Gallivanting abroad was easier before COVID-19 but being “grounded” is not so bad if you are a student in Staycations, an elective class in the Middle School! Each class period provided a staycation to a different country. Guest speakers included parents, teachers, community members, and even our very own Head of School, Dr. Watson. Students had the good fortune to learn about music, culture, language, food, holidays, geography, government, and more from at least 22 different countries. Two class periods were taught by Ms. Stevens’ from a tourist point of view in contrast to a native point of view. Discussions were had about how each person has a unique perspective. The class provided opportunities to dispel misconceptions and a safe place to ask questions about race and cultural differences and similarities. Students learned that every country is beautiful and interesting, and every person has value.
CAMPUS REFLECTIONS
Students in the MS elective kept a log of “takeaways” from each guest speaker. Each student took notes during the presentations and wrote their favorite facts and figures about the countries. Not only did students learn unforgettable lessons about human geography, but they also learned how diverse and complex our CSN community is.
Sixty-seven Lower School students joined the Varsity Cheer team for a Homecoming game performance! The 23 Varsity cheerleaders practiced with them all week so they could all show off their new cheer skills at the game.
CSN SPIRIT
CLASS OF 2021
The Class of 2021 continued CSN’s tradition of academic excellence! Throughout their senior year, the Class of 2021 scored 272 more points on the SAT than the typical Florida senior as CSN nationally ranked in the 86th percentile. 91% of CSN seniors in the top half of their class were accepted to a Barron’s Most Competitive College. Seniors also enjoyed a 25:1 student to college counselor ratio to assist their college application process. However, the success of the Class of 2021 cannot truly be measured by numbers. Their accomplishments with community service, academics, and athletics are immeasurable.

COMMITTING TO COLLEGE
Through Athletics, students become stronger, more resilient, and develop a thorough understanding of teamwork and sportsmanship. Athletics can open many doors for students, including continuing their sports careers in college! Congratulations to seniors Becca Micelle (Clemson University), Elly Beshears (Emory University), and Cassidy Bloom (University at Albany) for officially committing to continue their volleyball careers. We are proud of you!

FINE & PERFORMING ARTS
HIDING IN THE OPEN SHOWTIME
The CSN Advanced Theater class presented the powerful and moving play Hiding In The Open in October. This play, an adaptation of Sabina Zimering's memoir Hiding in the Open, tells the true story of two Jewish sisters from Poland who assume false Catholic identities and work in a Nazi hotel during World War II. Living in constant fear of having their identities revealed, the sisters bravely face danger and the challenges of growing up while keeping their heritage a secret. This story of survival and teenage courage examines the bonds of family and human kindness in the face of great atrocities. The show had an 18-person cast with 2 student stage managers working alongside a professional stage manager, lighting designer, costume designer and set designer. The play was staged and directed by CSN's Director of Theater, Mr. Mark Danni.
This year's 19th Annual SHOWTIME theme was Those Were The Days: A Trip Through The '50s, '60s, '70s, And '80s. Showtime had a cast of 20 Upper School students who sang and danced up a storm of favorites from those decades. The show also featured over 30 members of the Lower School Dance Express.
ALL-STATE MUSICIANS
Florida All-State is the highest honor a music student can achieve in the state of Florida. Making it requires an intense practice regimen, incredible dedication, and a very high skill level. All-State groups meet in Tampa in early January each year at the FMEA convention and phenomenal ensembles are put together to rehearse, learn, and perform.
CSN Upper School students Rachel Li and Alex Dimaras both made the All-State Orchestra, and Bianca Trope made the All-State Honors Band this year. Huge congratulations to these fine CSN Music students!
This year, CSN’s fourth and fifth grade students, led by art teacher Angela MacDonald, participated in the Never Say Goodbye to Florida Panthers 2021-2022 Art Challenge Contest sponsored by FGCU’s Wings of Hope program. The purpose of this program, which our fourth graders attend each year, is to educate students about the 120 – 130 adult Florida panthers left in the world. Students learn about these animals and ways that they can save and protect this endangered species.
FLORIDA PANTHERS ART CHALLENGE CHALLENGE WINNER
We are thrilled to announce that fourth grader, Celie, won 4th place out of approximately 2,000 art entries by students from 20 area schools. Her artwork will be displayed at FGCU later this year!

RACHAEL RICH '17
CSN alumnus, Chris Franco '06, was the guest speaker at the Senior Investiture and reflected on the value of his CSN education and experiences, especially his time as a radio host on CSN’s very own radio program. That opportunity, along with student government and theater, established his drive to discover new challenges and succeed in new and uncomfortable situations. Chris is the Founder and CEO of Woodridge Growth, a leading growth marketing agency based in New York City whose client roster includes Clarity Money, Goldman Sachs, Jet, FanDuel, GreenBlender, and Miss USA. Woodridge Growth gives Fortune 100 companies, billion-dollar startups, and fast-growing brands a competitive advantage through Facebook and Instagram advertising.
Rachael Rich '17 recently graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan Honors College with a B.S. in Biopsychology, Cognition & Neuroscience. Her honors thesis within the Psychology Department examined the role of childhood maltreatment on adolescent rule breaking behaviors. She accepted a position as a Clinical Research Coordinator for Harvard Psychology’s Adolescent Stress & Development Lab. When asked, “What advice would you give to your high school self?” she responded… “Keep being uniquely you and dive headfirst into what makes you excited for life. There is no need to focus on being digestible for others. Fill up space in exactly the way you’d like to, even if others don’t understand it at first.”
Katja Gilman '17 attended Duke University and double majored in Public Policy and Visual Arts, and minored in Russian Language and Culture. She completed two theses for each major, earning Highest Distinction in Public Policy and Distinction in Visual Arts. She also graduated with Cum Laude Honors. Post undergrad, she is pursuing an MBA. She was admitted to the Silver Scholars Program at Yale School of Management and started the program this fall. As she reminisced about graduating she “remembered how it was really due to the support of CSN college counselors and encouragement during the college application process. Because of CSN, I was able to achieve my college dreams and have had such an amazing time over the past several years.”
Virginia Hodges graduated from CSN in 2015 and is now a second-year dental student at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. She is spending her first two years in the simulation lab practicing operative hand skills and will start seeing patients in the clinic this summer. “I am honored to work alongside such driven students and faculty in the field of dentistry, and I am excited to start filling a need in our community,” Virginia says. “I would not be living my dream now if it were not for the CSN experience where I was challenged academically and I learned the importance of a sense of community. The CSN experience allowed me to explore all my interests in a welcoming environment where I learned that I wanted to pursue a career that would combine problem solving and helping others.”

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
AS WE CELEBRATE OUR 40TH YEAR WE HONOR EACH STUDENT WHO ATTENDED CSN FROM 1982 – 2022.
From the lifers who are here for 13 years, to the exchange students only here for a semester, each family has been an integral part of CSN’s history. The meaningful relationships created during their time on campus convinced some alumni to remain heavily involved in the community by sending their children to CSN as well! For example, Nina Van Arsdale, alumna who now has a new role at school-mom, fondly remembers campus traditions such as Storybook Day that can now be shared with her daughter, a current 2nd grader at CSN.
As we continue to share the mission of excellence in Southwest Florida we look forward to welcoming more of our alumni back as parents!
