Welcome home, welcome to Casa! It’s hard to believe that our little company has been publishing for almost two decades now. So much has changed in Casa de Campo, and yet so much that is important has remained the same. The evolution of the resort is mind-boggling, with hundreds of new homes being built, new golf courses, an incredible transformation of Minitas beach and lots of exciting new amenities at the Marina give us plenty to explore and enjoy. What does not change is the enchanting and incredible hospitality that has made Casa de Campo a globally recognized and admired destination. And here we are, continuing to cover it all. We are proud to see Casa de Campo Living magazine, website and email newsletter continue to grow in popularity as our community continues to grow and thrive, thanks to the continuous dedication and hard work of the leadership and teams of the various areas within the 10,000 acres of paradise we all love and enjoy. We look forward to continuing to serve our growing community as it also continues to grow and attract new guests and residents from around the country and around the world. While there is nothing quite like celebrating the holidays in paradise, let’s take a few moments to really appreciate those loved ones around us. These days were made for making the best possible memories, together. So with all my heart, I wish all our readers, residents and guests an incredible and wonderful holiday season and a happy new year! those who are forever in our hearts

It’s hard to know what to say when those we love suddenly depart. The recent loss of our dear friend Luisella Givigliano was just such a case. Luisella was an incredible person who was loved by so many and, to us personally, was like family. It’s impossible to not remember her incredible laugh, generous and loving nature. Luisella, we miss you greatly. Claudio & Roswitha, Philip & Rebecca, Jacqueline & Andrew Maria Luisa Pelliccione in Givigliano, for everybody in Casa de Campo always and only "Luisella", was born outside Rome, Italy. She moved to the capital very young and once she finished her studies, went to work for a real estate company where she was hired to develop "Giannutri", a small island near isola d'Elba. Within a year and a half she had sold every lot, house, villa in the entire island, including her own apartment. She was then approached by the Credit Suisse realtors co. to do the same in "Albarella" a bigger island below Venice. At the same time she had opened a fashion shop in the elegant area of Parioli in Rome. For that reason on September 15th 1976 she was in Florence, to view the collections at Pitti and there is where we met the first time.

My right leg was shaking so much that we called the evening off and I took a flight back to Milano. Two days later we tried again and we had a great time. I went back to New York where I lived and called her (a $ 300 call, at the time there was no other way to communicate) and asked her to join me. She came, things were not great, she left after a few days. We repeated the same story two more times, until she finally decided to stay. From that day on, we never left each other’s side for 43 years. I was distributing Italian designer collections for men in the States, Canada, Mexico and South America. She was an expert in women’s fashion, so we opened a small showroom in Manhattan, then 6 months later a bigger one in front of Carnegie Hall, then we took three floors on 56th street and 5th avenue. Near the Trump Tower, and we stayed there for 35 years. I believe all together we launched about 80 to 90 fashion collections with resounding success during that time. Those were the "Golden-Reagan" years, business was booming and for us money was not important, it was only a tool to enjoy life and friends. Our routine was basic: get up early, go to the showrooms, go home at 5:30, sleep until 11:30 go to Studio 54 with friends, eat and dance until 5:30 am, go back home, take a shower and go to work.

We were young then! The president of CDC, with whom later on we became very good friends, found out about our problems and provided us with t-shirts, shorts,etc. and invited us for dinner at his house. When we arrived, Mike Bongiorno and his family were also there as guests. At the time he was a big TV personality in Italy, and we enjoyed the company. The following year we came back and I discovered my love for riding horses came full circle when I discovered polo. We made an agreement: we would buy a house near the beach as Luisella was a sea lover and I would play polo, which I did for 30 years. We bought in Los Lagos and, at the time, on the other side of the street, where Los Mangos is now, there were fields with cows and horses. We were having a great time and she was always inviting people at least 3 times a week. Once, at the president of CDC’s house, for her birthday, she was asked to help and receive the guests coming in. To her greatest surprise Luciano Pavarotti came in and sang her happy birthday. She cried. We started sharing a few jokes and stories; it was a great evening.

We met Andrea Bocelli and his wife Veronica and they came to see us at the ranch at CDC where I had my stable because he rides beautiful Andalusian white ones, even if he can not see. We are still good friends and keep in touch. Eros Ramazzotti, the Italian singer, sat with us one night in Casa de Campo but we did not know who he was until he sang for us. Amazing. Another time we met Richard Branson: an eclectic man who explained to us that he had made his first million dollars at 18 with Virgin Records,was going to cross the Atlantic with a balloon (which he did) and was going to organize trips in the sky (which is doing now) and there were other fantastic memories, as Luisella was a fabulous host and many, many friends came to visit, stay with us as guests, many times. The years passed and we enjoyed Casa de Campo more and more: lots of activities, the beach, Altos de Chavón where we had many Christmas dinners and New Years celebrations. I played polo for a long time but Luisella, who used to come and watch, got too worried of the many times I fell and broke something on my body, that she refused to worry and waited home! We witnessed the growth of Casa de Campo from 300 villas in 1985 close to 1800 just a few months ago, and expanding, a sign that this place is considered “the resort" of the Caribbean. As Aldo Gucci said to me once, "I do not care if they speak good or bad about me, the important thing is that they speak," CDC is always on everybody's minds and talks, and there is no other place that is as complete as this. Unfortunately two months ago, Luisella passed away and we hope she is in heaven. I want to thank personally all the people who have contacted me, written and called.

1. MARINA RIVERSIDE CENTER

President Danilo Medina inaugurated the new and modern Marina Riverside Center, an event and convention center located in La Marina de Casa de Campo, with spectacular views of the Chavón River and the Caribbean Sea. The building with capacity for 1,360 people has all the facilities and technical specifications to host any type of celebration, in addition to having the support of world-class services offered by Casa de Campo. REO SPEEDWAGON CONCERT

Music lovers of the 70-80s lived a memorable night in Altos de Chavón with the presentation of the rock bands REO Speedwagon and Asia, who sang all of their greatest hits for the first time in the Dominican Republic.

3. 6TH CASA DE CAMPO CORRE

The sixth annual Casa de Campo Corre for the Hogar del Niño was a huge success! Hundreds of participants came to Casa de Campo to compete in the 42K marathon, the 21K half-marathon, and the 5K.Â El 6to Casa de Campo Corre para el Hogar del Niño fue un gran éxito! Cientos de participantes vinieron a Casa de Campo para competir en el maratón 42K, el medio maratón 21K y el 5K.

4. IBC NAUTICA OPENS ITS DOORS TO STUDENTS AND GRADUATES OF INTEC

Inversiones Bastilla del Caribe – IBC, had the pleasure of receiving students and graduates of the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC) at its facilities in the Marina de Casa de Campo where they had the opportunity to learn more about the process of creation, design, and development of a boat.

5. DUEÑOS 2019 The Casa de Campo community celebrated as we had never seen them before at this years Dueños events. With the traditional Casathon 5k, a tennis, golf and shooting tournament villa owners had an active sporting life in this past Dueños 2019 Weekend. Plus, it all ended with a night of awards, good eating, and dancing!

6.“AFTERNOON AT THE RANCH” END OF SUMMER EVENT

Casa de Campo’s summer event “Afternoon at the Ranch” was incredibly successful! The community got together at the Dude Ranch, which had been decorated in classic western style, where they enjoyed a delicious BBQ, live music, donkey polo, mechanical bull, and games.

7.TRICK OR TREAT

Trick-or-treating events are a wonderful and safe alternatives for young kids during the Halloween season. It was great seeing kids running around the Marina trying to fill their goodie bags, pose for pictures for their parents, and color Halloween-themed images. “Truco o Trato” es una alternativa maravillosa y segura para los niños pequeños durante la temporada de Halloween. This year the resort hosted its first annual “Couple’s Golf & Spa Retreat”, the newest golf event in Casa de Campo, with the attendance of national and international golfers. With numerous social gatherings and exciting days in the golf course, the first edition was won by Jackie Bass and Joel Ortiz. 9. XXIX CHARISMATIC RETREAT OF THE MIR FOUNDATION

The Fundación MIR celebrated its 29th annual Charismatic Retreat, surpassing the expectations of each of the attendees. The annual event has become a tradition in La Romana and continues to have the participation and support from many people who celebrate their faith. This Fall, the gallery had 2 very interesting exhibitions starting with “Artforo” followed by “Mestura”. The latest was by a group of Chavón graduates who showed us a fresh and modern proposal and whose goal was to promote contemporary art. The International Tennis Cup, celebrated its 42nd anniversary this year with over 200 players and more spectators on the sidelines. Attendees especially liked witnessing Casa de Campo residents go head-to-head on the courts. Over 600 runners came to Bayahibe for the 2019 10k competition. Amaury Rodríguez is this year’s men's category champion, and Soranyi Rodríguez won in the female category, she’s been the winner in the last six of seven editions! 15

The 38th “Casa de Campo Golf Open,” the oldest and most popular golf event in Casa de Campo golfing history, was celebrated on the Teeth of the Dog, Links and Dye Fore golf courses. This tournament ended with a fun dinner and prize-giving ceremony at Minitas Beach where Milko Brito and Cristina Ellena Galban Molinos were crowned as this year’s champions. El 38º "Casa de Campo Golf Open", el evento de golf más antiguo y popular en la historia del golf de Casa de Campo, se celebró en los campos de golf Teeth of the Dog, Links y Dye Fore. According to the Spanish Language Dictionary, catibía is the “flour that is obtained from the grated yucca, pressed and squeezed, with which a kind of pancake or tortilla is made.” In the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, the cativía or catibía is the yucca version of the famous empanada. Few are the people who do not succumb to an exquisite and crunchy catibía. Below we bring you the recipe of how to make them thanks to our friend Rosa María “La Chefa”… Enjoy!

¿Saben qué son las cativías o catibías? De acuerdo al Diccionario de la Lengua Española se llama catibía a la “harina que se obtiene de la raíz de la yuca rallada, prensada y exprimida, con la que se hace una especie de panatela.”. En República Dominicana, y en Cuba, la cativía o catibía es la versión de yuca de la famosa empanada. Pocas son las personas que no sucumben a una exquisita y crujiente empanadita de catibía. A continuación les traemos la receta de como hacerlas gracias a nuestra amiga la Rosa María “La Chefa”... ¿Se atreven a intentarlo? ¡Que disfruten!

4 pounds of cassava (yuca) 2 tablespoons of oil ½ tablespoon of annatto seeds ( achiote tree) 2 tablespoons of sour orange juice ½ cup of tapioca (yuca/cassava) flour (if necessary) Enough oil for frying

1 pound ground beef ½ pound ground pork 1 onion cut into cubes ¼ cup coriander leaves 1 stem of celery cut 2 cloves of garlic peeled 2 Scotch Bonnet peppers ½ Cubanelle pepper cut into cubes ½ red bell pepper cut into cubes ¼ teaspoon of oregano 2 tablespoons of annatto seeds oil 1 tablespoon of tomato puree ¼ cup of white wine Salt and pepper to taste

4 libras de yuca 2 cucharadas de aceite ½ cucharada de semillas de bija 2 cucharadas de agrio de naranja ½ taza de harina de yuca (de ser necesario) Suficiente aceite para freír Sesame seed oil to decorate

1 libra carne molida de res ½ libra carne molida de cerdo 1 cebolla cortada en cubos ¼ taza hojas de cilantrito 1 tallo de apio cortado 2 dientes de ajo pelados 2 ajíes gustoso ½ ají cubanela cortado en cubos ½ pimiento rojo cortado en cubos ¼ cucharadita de orégano 2 cucharadas de aceite de bija 1 cucharada de puré de tomate ¼ taza de vino blanco Sal y pimienta al gusto

First Step: the oil. Heat the oil over low heat and pour the annatto seeds. When the oil turns reddish, turn off the heat and remove. Let stand 30 minutes approximately. Strain before using. Primer paso: el aceite. calentar el aceite a fuego bajo y verter las semillas de bija. Cuando el aceite tome color rojizo, apagar el fuego y retirar. Dejar reposar 30 minutos aproximadamente. Colar antes de utilizar. Second step: filling. Put the meat in a bowl and mix well. Put the vegetables and herbs in the food processor. Once processed, add to the meat mixture, along with salt, pepper, and oregano and mix well. Put a cauldron to heat with oil, and when it is very hot add the meat, move so that it does not form lumps. Let cook 10 minutes, stirring every 3 minutes and then add the tomato puree and wine. Turn off and let cool. You can also put it inside the refrigerator, this way it will be colder and will not damage the dough. Segundo paso: relleno. Poner las carnes en un bol y mezclar bien. Poner los vegetales y las

hierbas en el procesador y procesar. Agregar a la mezcla de las carnes, salpimentar y agregar el orégano y mezclar bien. Poner un caldero a calentar con el aceite, y cuando este bien caliente agregar la carne, mover para que no forme grumos. Dejar cocinar 10 minutos, moviendo cada 3 minutos y luego agregar el puré de tomate y el vino. Apagar y dejar enfriar. Si es necesario llevar a la nevera, así estará mas frio y no dañara la masa.

Third step: cassava. Peel and wash the cassava; grate it by the thin part of the grater or process it with a food processor. Then place small amounts of the grated cassava on a clean kitchen towel and squeeze until the most starch is removed; pass through a strainer or sieve until a very fine flour is formed. Tercer paso: la yuca. Pelar y lavar la yuca; guayarla por la parte fina del guayo (rallador) o

procesar por el procesador de alimentos. Luego colocar pequeñas cantidades de la yuca rallada en una toalla de cocina limpia y exprimir hasta retirar la mayor cantidad del almidón; luego pasar por un colador o cedazo hasta formar una harina bien fina.

Fourth step: cooking. Heat a thick-bottomed cauldron, pour the cassava and cook constantly stirring until a lumpy mixture forms. Be careful to not overcook the dough. Once ready remove from the cauldron and let cool. Cuarto pasc: Calentar un caldero de fondo grueso, verter la yuca y cocinar moviendo constantemente hasta que se forme una mezcla grumosa. Cuidado en este paso de no cocinar de más la harina. Luego retirar del caldero y dejar refrescar. Fifth step: prepare warm water for kneading. Pour water in a pot and mix in garlic, oregano, and salt (being careful with the amount), reserve.

Quinto pasc: preparar el agua tibia para el amasado.

Poner en una olla el agua con el ajo, orégano y la sal (debe quedar aI punto de sal, parecido a cuando hacemos arroz blanco), reservar.

Sixth step: knead. Pour the cassava dough on a lightly greased table and add the oil with annatto seeds, the sour orange, and a splash of warm water, knead with your hands until you get a manageable mixture, adding warm water little by little (if it is very wet, you can add some cassava flour). Test the salt, and if necessary, add more. Sexto paso: amasar. Verter la masa de yuca en una mesa engrasada ligeramente y añadir el aceite con

bija, el agrio de naranja, y un chorrito del agua tibia, amasar con las manos hasta obtener una mezcla manejable, agregando agua tibia poco a poco (si queda muy húmeda, puedes agregar un poco de harina de yuca). Probar la masa de sal y si es necesario, agregar más.

Seventh step:cut. Roll out your dough (it should not be too thin, or too thick), then mark with a round cutter of the desired size, trying not to waste much dough. If you wish, you can make balls that weigh the same and roll them out individually.

Séptimo paso: cortar. Extender bien la masa (no debe quedar ni muy fina, ni muy gruesa) en el mesón

de trabajo con la ayuda de un rodillo, luego marcar con un cortador redondo del tamaño deseado, tratando de no desperdiciar mucha masa. Si deseas, puedes hacer bolitas que pesen lo mismo y bolillar de forma individual.

Eighth step: fill. Fill the center of the dough with a little of the meat, taking into account that it should

be enough for all the cativias. Moisten the edge with the water prepared with garlic and oregano and fold in half; seal at the edges with a fork or pressing hard with your fingers. Put on floured tray. Reserve.

Octavo paso: rellenar. Rellenar el centro de la masa con un poco de la carne, tomando en cuenta que debe alcanzarle para toda la masa. Luego humedecer el borde con el agua preparada con ajo y orégano y doblar la empanada; sellar por los bordes con un tenedor o presionando fuerte con los dedos. Ir poniendo en bandeja enharinada. Reservar. Ninth Step: fry. In a cauldron with plenty of hot oil, fry until browned on both sides, remove and place on a plate with absorbent paper. To serve, put them in a large oval dish and decorate with basil leaves and cherry tomatoes. Novemno pasc: freír. En un caldero con abundante aceite caliente, freír hasta dorar por ambos lados, retirar y colocar en un plato con papel absorbente. Para servir, ponerlas en un plato ovalado grande y decorar con hojas de albahaca y tomates cherry.

1.) GREEN SIDE BUNKER:

Green Side Bunkers are actually very simple shots, but for some reason, we make them very difficult. However, having a good setup is a total game-changer and you will enjoy the results, I guarantee it!!

Like most people say, setup is key. You want to start by digging in your feet and have a wide stance. Once you have done that, you need to make sure you are comfortable and feel slightly further away from that ball. From here, loosen your grip pressure, shift your weight left and make your backswing to about shoulder height and accelerate down to the sand. The point of contact you make with the sand is vital. A good rule of thumb is to hit 2-4 inches behind the ball and blast the ball out of the sand. I highly recommend drawing a line behind the ball and test to see how far behind you actually contact the sand. Practice this drill and enjoy the results. 44 CASA DE CAMPO LIVING

Well in golf we don't have a second or third try, we only get one. The One Ball Drill forces and encourages you to focus more on one ball and it simulates exactly what we are doing on the course. Before your next round, use this method to navigate your way around the practice green and I can guarantee your putting will improve.

Consecrated in 1979, St. Stanislaus Church is named after the patron saint of Poland in tribute to Pope John Paul II who presented the church with the ashes of St. Stanislaus for its inauguration. A popular choice for destination weddings, it was here that famous actress Celinés Toribio wed in 2009, with fellow actress Michelle Rodríguez as her bridesmaid. “This is the marina that I dreamed of building twenty years ago and which finally came true.” The Marina Casa de Campo is set in 90,000 square meters of land where the Chavón River meets the Caribbean Sea. Certainly, one of the Dominican Republic’s most upscale marinas, La Marina, as it’s known by locals, is close to a multitude of scenic sea destinations such as Catalina island, Saona island, and Palmilla, a natural swimming pool, as well as waters ripe for sport fishing which has granted them an appearance in the annual Billfish Report since 2013.

Opened in 2001, the Marina Casa de Campo marked a turning point in the development of both yachting and fishing activities in the eastern region of the country. The project was so successful that just a year later, an expansion of the Marina was approved and the wave breaker was cut and a second stage was constructed taking the project from 183 moorings to a total of 350 docks and capable of receiving ships from 30 to 250 feet in length. The high quality of service, excellent facilities, and ease of access at the Marina Casa de Campo have all contributed to its success. This prestigious project is a dream come true, conceived by Italian architect Gianfranco Fini on his first visit to Casa de Campo after receiving an invitation from his friend Pierro Giacosa in 1989. Fini fell in love with the country and resort and presented his vision to Alfonso “Alfy” Fanjul, President of the Board of Directors Central Romana Corporation, in a fortuitous meeting aboard a river cruise boat up the Chavón River. 56 CASA DE CAMPO LIVING

4TH MARINA CASA DE CAMPO OPEN The fourth Marina Casa de Campo Open hosted by FlyZone Fishing is back and will be starting the second weekend of March 2020. This fishing tournament is modeled off of Florida’s prestigious Reef Cup and includes all species of marlin: blue, white, sailfish, and spearfish. The tournament is a catch and release competition style and is a part of the calendar of events that forms a part of the Blue Marlin fishing season, which starts on February 1st and ends May 30th. MARINA RIVERSIDE CENTER The Marina Riverside Center is the newest project in Casa de Campo. The design is inspired by sailboats on the water and uses textile architecture for the ceiling of the main hall and in the velarias of the outdoor terrace. Its large party room, fully air-conditioned, has neutral characteristics that allow the organizer greater flexibility when decorating or arranging the entire space. It has its own sound system, dressing rooms with all amenities, industrial kitchen with cooking area and cold room, and bathrooms and dressing rooms for service personnel.

El Marina Riverside Center es el proyecto más nuevo en Casa de Campo. El diseño está inspirado en veleros en el agua y utiliza arquitectura textil para el techo de la sala principal y en las velarias de la terraza al aire libre. Su gran salón de fiestas, totalmente climatizado, tiene características neutras que le permiten al organizador una mayor flexibilidad al decorar u organizar todo el espacio. Cuenta con su propio sistema de sonido, vestidores con todas las comodidades, cocina industrial con área de cocción y cuarto frío, y baños y vestidores para el personal de servicio.
