asa is so much more than a tropical retreat. Beyond the beach, the palm trees, the warm Caribbean sea and the beautiful oceanside golf course, the Teeth of the Dog, Casa is home. Casa is our home. Here, we are a community, a diverse community. Some of us love to golf, others love tennis, some love fishing and some love it all. Yet, like the ocean, Casa changes everyday. People come and go, as do restaurants, services and stores. Our mission with Casa de Campo Living is to keep you upto-date with everything new and exciting happening within our little piece of paradise. In this edition, we go behind the scenes at the new Chavón Cinema Faculty, which, perhaps, you didn’t know existed. Meanwhile, I invite you to join us online at casadecampoliving.com for daily updates on life in Casa. I wish you a blessed summer! Casa es mucho más que un retiro tropical. Fundación MIR carried out its annual Oral Health Outreach with Dr. Hudson, who this year brought a group of volunteer dentists and dental students to offer their services to the pupils of the Fundación MIR schools in La Romana. La Fundación MIR llevó a cabo su operativo dental anual con el Dr. Hudson, quien este año trajo un grupo de dentistas voluntarios y estudiantes de odontología para ofrecer sus servicios a los alumnos de las escuelas de la Fundación MIR en La Romana. 2. CAFE DE LA LECHE THEMED GATHERINGS

Themed parties have become all the rage in Casa de Campo, especially since Café de la Leche has taken on the trend within their monthly gatherings. This season we have added a “Touch of red”, visited a Tropical paradise and enjoyed a Mexican Chic Soirée! Las fiestas temáticas han hecho furor en Casa de Campo, especialmente desde que el Café de la Leche ha tomado la tendencia dentro de sus reuniones mensuales. 3. 14TH CASA DE CAMPO SPRING SHOOTOUT

This year Casa de Campo celebrated its 14th annual golf tournament, the “Spring Shootout”. Three days of friendly competition teeing off around Casa de Campo’s 3 Pete Dye-designed golf courses where Neo Rodriguez and Ada de la Vega were crowned Overall Winners. Este año, Casa de Campo celebró su 14º torneo anual de golf, el “Spring Shootout”. Tres días de competencia amistosa alrededor de los 3 campos de golf diseñados por Pete Dye de Casa de Campo donde fueron coronados como ganadores Neo Rodríguez y Ada de la Vega.

4. 33RD ANNUAL SUGAR GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 33rd annual Sugar Golf Tournament hosted by Alfy Fanjul saw more than 400 international golfers take part in this prestigious 3-day event played across all of Casa de Campos’s golf courses. Guests enjoyed a number of private functions each evening. El 33° Torneo anual de golf Sugar organizado por Alfy Fanjul vio a más de 400 golfistas internacionales participar en este prestigioso evento de 3 días que se jugó en todos los campos de golf de Casa de Campo. 5. FUNDACIÓN MIR SUGAR BAZAAR

While golf teams were out on the greens, the La Romana Country Club hosted a beautiful Ladies Luncheon and Fashion Show benefiting the Fundación MIR. There are few things in life better than shopping, food and fashion and this luncheon combined all three! Mientras que los equipos de golf estaban afuera en los greens, La Romana Country Club organizó un hermoso almuerzo de damas y un desfile de moda en beneficio de la Fundación MIR. The 20th edition of the Royal Cup, hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce, took place on a beautiful sunny day on the Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo with the participation of over 120 players. La 20ª edición de la Copa Real, organizada por la Cámara de Comercio Británica, tuvo lugar en un hermoso día soleado en el Teeth of the Dog en Casa de Campo con la participación de más de 120 jugadores.

7. 2ND MARINA CASA DE CAMPO OPEN TOURNAMENT

The 2nd annual Marina Casa de Campo Open, directed by Robert “Fly” Navarro, saw the participation of 19 sport fishing boats and was attended by over 200 nautical enthusiasts. Emerging victorious on this years tournament was Builders Choice, the team from North Carolina. La 2ª edición anual del Marina Casa de Campo Open, dirigido por Robert “Fly” Navarro, contó con la participación de 19 embarcaciones de pesca deportiva y la asistencia de más de 200 entusiastas náuticos. Builders Choice, el equipo de Carolina del Norte, salió victorioso en el torneo de este año.

8. MIR SWEETS AND TREATS

The Fundación MIR organized its second edition of their activity “Easter Sweets and Treats” with numerous beautifully decorated tables in pastel colors filled with delicious candies! It was a very successful afternoon that raised funds for the foundation’s schools.

Sen2 brought the walls of the Big Apple (EE.UU.) to the Marina Casa de Campo; a set of pieces that have a combination of styles that include graphic letters with threedimensional elements, images of pop art and abstract art techniques. Sen2 trajo las paredes de la Gran Manzana (EE.UU.) a la Marina Casa de Campo; un conjunto de piezas que tienen una combinación de estilos que incluyen letras gráficas con elementos tridimensionales, imágenes de arte pop y técnicas de arte abstracto.

“Los Líderes” reunited at Altos de Chavón for the beginning of their world tour, “Como antes”. After years of waiting and performing as each other’s special guests, it was a momentous occasion to see Wisin and Yandel together again after five years of separation.

Casa de Campo welcomed back the Concours D’Elegance for the second year in row. This year, there were over 100 cars on display with vehicles ranging in makes and models dating all the way back from 1919 up to the most recent.

With exciting double matches and an emotional awards ceremony, the 13th McDaniel Tennis Tournament was battled out over four days to raise funds for programs benefiting ball boys and players. Edwin Guerrero and Ronnie Pimentel stood out and earned earned this year’s tournament. Chavón Cinema Faculty

little over a year ago, in February of 2017, The Altos de Chavón School of Design opened a new Cinematography program at the Altos de Chavón campus. The two year program features professors and guest lecturers from impressive film industry backgrounds. The program teaches from both theoretical and practical fields emphasizing the importance of hands on learning. Students visit museums and attend workshops broadening their knowledge on the industry. The Chavón film program encourages students to discover their own voice and story telling ability through research and experimentation, developing their craft with each project.

El programa de dos años cuenta con profesores invitados con trayectorias impresionantes en la industria cinematográfica. El programa enseña de manera teórica pero también enfatizan en la importancia de la práctica. Los estudiantes visitan museos y asisten a talleres para ampliar sus conocimientos sobre la industria. El programa de cine Chavón anima a los estudiantes a descubrir su propia voz y la capacidad de contar una historia a través de la investigación y experimentación,desarrollando así su oficio con cada proyecto.

n The director of the film program, Tanya Valette, joined the Chavón faculty after serving as the director of the International School of Cinema and Television in Cuba. Not only was she a member of the first generation of graduates, but she was the first graduate and woman to hold the position as director. Before Chavón, Tanya dedicated her time to writing and documentary script analysis teaching workshops at various public and private institutions. Tanya says, “The Dominican Republic film industry as an art is on an upward development process and this has much to do with how the new creative and critical generation is being trained.” She has dedicated time to improving the film classrooms and upgrading the tools available to students. According to Tanya, “the main requirement for studying film in Chavón is to love the cinema in a passionate way.”

La directora del programa de cine, Tanya Valette, se unió a la facultad de Chavón después de servir como directora de la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de Cuba. No sólo es miembro de la primera generación de egresados, pero fue la primera egresada y mujer en ocupar el cargo de director. Antes de Chavón, Tania dedicaba su tiempo a talleres de enseñanza de análisis de escritura de guión y documentales en diversas instituciones públicas y privadas. Tania dice: “La industria del cine en República Dominicana como un arte está en un proceso de desarrollo ascendente y esto tiene mucho que ver con cómo se está formando la nueva generación creativa y crítica.” Ella se ha dedicado a mejorar las aulas de cine y a mejorar las herramientas disponibles para los estudiantes. De acuerdo con Tanya, “el principal requisito para estudiar cine en Chavón es amar el cine de una manera apasionada. SUMMER 2018 • CASADECAMPOLIVING.COM 19

Another important person that makes the film program the success that it is today is Pedro Carrasco. Pedro is the Technical Coordinator of the film program. Pedro attended Altos de Chavón School of Design studying fine arts before attending the International School of Cinema and Television in Cuba. He chose to return to Chavón because he wanted to help be a part of the development of this program, offering students the chance to learn about the artform, “it is very rewarding to be able to offer this space to new generations of filmmakers” he says. Though not a professor, Pedro loves following the students progress, offering constructive criticism helping with their learning process. Being on the coordination side, Pedro sees the overarching projects of the entire program. He says, “what I like most is being able to see the students get excited about a movie, to feel that they discover something new and to witness their progress and searches. It is magical to see the growth of a person doing what they love.” 20 CASA DE CAMPO LIVING

Otra persona importante que hace que el programa de cine sea el éxito que es hoy es Pedro Carrasco. Pedro es el coordinador técnico. El es egresado de Altos de Chavón La Escuela de Diseño, donde estudió bellas artes y de la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de Cuba. Optó por regresar a Chavón porque quería ayudar a desarrollar este programa que ofrece a los estudiantes la oportunidad de aprender acerca de esta forma de arte, “es muy gratificante poder ofrecer este espacio a las nuevas generaciones de cineastas” nos dice. Aunque no es un profesor, le encanta darle seguimiento a los estudiantes, seguir sus procesos, participar de las críticas, y ayudarles. Estar del lado de la coordinación le permite valorar los grandes esfuerzos que realiza la Fundación Altos de Chavón para llevar a cabo este proyecto. Él dice, “Lo que más me gusta es verlos emocionarse con una película, sentir que descubren algo nuevo y ser testigo de sus progresos y sus búsquedas. Es mágico ver el crecimiento de una persona haciendo lo que le gusta.”

The Chavón film program has already received international recognition being featured on Variety’s “Stellar Film Schools in 2017” list. The international entertainment magazine listed the Altos de Chavón School of Design after the film program had only been in session for a few months, which shows the dedication and passion from both the students and professors. One thing is for sure, these graduates are going places and we can’t wait to watch!

his awards season, Mexican film director, screenwriter, and producer Guillermo del Toro has been recognized for his 2017 film, The Shape of Water. Not only is the film winning top awards like Best Motion Picture at the Oscars and Best Original Score at the Golden Globes, but Guillermo himself has taken home both awards for Best Director from the Oscars and the Golden Globes. Born in Mexico in 1964, Guillermo has always had an affinity for monsters believing that today’s issues can be expressed through the surrealism of fantasy. During his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes for Best Director, Guillermo said, “Since childhood, I have been faithful to monsters. I have been saved and absorbed by them because monsters, I believe, are patron saints of our blissful imperfection and they allow and embody the possibility of failure and life.” 28 CASA DE CAMPO LIVING

Guillermo developed an interest in filmmaking in his early teens. He learned about makeup and special effects realizing he could create almost anything he dreamt of. His films follow a common theme of dark fantasy with non-human creatures that teleport the viewer to a different world. The Shape Of Water, set during the 1960’s in Cold War Era America, follows the relationship between a mute janitor and an amphibious creature being held in captivity at a high-security government facility. The film forces viewers to think about their own perceptions of love and empathy. “For 25 years I have hand-crafted very strange little tales made of motion, color, light, and shadow. And in many of these instances, in three precise instances, these strange stories, these fables, have saved my life.

For Guillermo, film is a chance to face the demons inside him. He has taken his monsters and created narrative. For that reason, his films are extremely personal. Guillermo encourages young filmmakers to continue breaking barriers. During his Oscars acceptance speech for Best Director Guillermo said, “I think that the greatest thing our art does and our industry does, is erase the lines in the sand. We should continue doing that, when the world tells us to make them deeper.” That same evening, after The Shape of Water won Best Motion Picture, Guillermo told the crowd, “I dedicate this to every young filmmaker, the youth that is showing the world how things are done ... in every country in the world. I was a kid enamored with movies. Growing up in Mexico, I thought this could never happen. It happened and I want to tell you, everyone that is dreaming of a parable, of using genre of fantasy to tell the stories about the things that are real in the world today, you can do it. This is a door. Kick it open and come in.

4 CONSEJOS QUE TE CONVERTIRÁN EN UNA MÁQUINA DE PUTTING BY ERIC LILLIBRIDGE

In this article, I want to focus on perfecting your stroke and improving the most important aspect of the game... PUTTING. Many people want to hit the ball 10 or 20 yards further off the tee, but to be completely honest, putting the ball in the hole in fewer strokes will lower your handicap rapidly. Putting has become one of the most overlooked aspects due to video, TrackMan, and other venues of technology. Even if you think you are a good putter, I would spend more time in your practice making sure you keep improving.

1.) CENTER CONTACT This is something that many people do not think about. They figure they must hit it in the center because it’s such a short stroke, but I see many people stroking the ball way off the toe and heel. If you do not have access to TrackMan Putting, video, or facetape, try this drill. Get 2 rubber bands and wrap them around your putter head. If you are a new golfer or higher handicap I would place the rubber bands about an inch and a half apart. If you are a lower handicap I would place the rubber bands an inch apart. See if you can make strike 5 in a row from short distance. If you are successful try doing some longer putts. This will narrow your focus and I guarantee you will get the ball closer to the hole and make more putts. 40 CASA DE CAMPO LIVING

Putting se ha convertido en uno de los aspectos más olvidados debido al video, TrackMan y otros avances tecnológicos. Incluso si piensas que eres un buen putter, yo le aconsejaría practicar más para asegurarse de seguir mejorando.

1.) CONTACTO AL CENTRO

Esto es algo en lo que mucha gente no piensa. Se imaginan que deben golpearlo en el centro porque es un golpe tan corto, pero veo a mucha gente dándole a la pelota desde la punta y el talón. Si no tiene acceso a TrackMan Putting, video o facetape, intente con este ejercicio. Obtenga 2 bandas de goma y envuélvalas alrededor de la cabeza del putter. Si eres un nuevo golfista o tiene un handicap alto, colocaría las bandas elásticas a una pulgada y media de distancia. Si tienes un handicap inferior, colocaría las gomas a una pulgada de distancia. 2.) PHIL MICKELSON DRILL

PHIL MICKELSON DRILL

This is one of the most talked about drills I have ever seen and one of the most underutilized drills I see people actually doing. This drill has so many benefits!! If you can make 50 3 foot putts in a row, it gives you confidence, mental toughness, it takes pressure off your chipping and lag putting and so much more. Place 6 balls around the hole in a 3 feet circle. Putt the first 6 in and place them around the hole again, repeat until you make 50 in a row. Here is the kicker, if you miss one, you have to go back to 0. Think about the pressure you will feel when you get to 47 or 49! Many of you probably don’t have the time to accomplish 50 in a row, but I would recommend to start at 10, then next practice session go to 20 and keep moving up.

3.) “CRISTI KERR DRILL”

This is a great drill for lag putting. Cristi has always been a great putter and has always been highly ranked when it comes to putting stats, not to mention she’s made over 20 million dollars in her career. This drill is one that she does every single time when preparing before the round. Take 1015 balls and place them 3 feet, 6 feet, 9 feet and so on, on a pretty straight putt. Place 3 clubs behind the hole and that will be the “success area”. Hit the first putt from 3 feet and make your way back. Do this a few times and you will get used to the speed of the green and have less 3 putts.

Green reading is not an easy task. The first thing we want to determine is if the putt is uphill or downhill. Secondly, we want to know if the right side is higher or lower than the left side throughout the length of the putt. Once we have determined that, we need to make an educated guess on how much. This is where practice comes into play. The more times you see the ball curve to or away from the hole, the more your brain will gather information. If all else fails, buy one of these to really see the true level of the putting surface.

CHINOIS The experience of 29 years in Asian gastronomy, makes Chinois a tradition. We can find a Sushi Bar, Thai Dishes and the Peking Duck served in three stages; in the first the duck is sliced and wrapped in steamed pancakes with leeks, cucumber and peking sauce. The second is a basket of potatoes stuffed with duck sauteed in ginger, leeks and onions. Finally the duck broth is served, which is an excellent digestive.
