Safe sleep for babies Information that every parent should know.
Volunteer, make a difference There are few things as satisfying as volunteering your time to make a difference in your community.
Editor’s note Something I’ve always found inspiring is volunteerism. Whether you lend your time behind the scenes with a child, with an adult in need, with animals, or directing a large group of people; it’s time well invested. It’s human nature to want to leave your mark on the world – to know that because you are here there’s been a signifcant difference made in the world. This month we highlight volunteerism under the Fall Entertainment section. Remember as your planning to visit pumpkin patches, and other fun fall outings, to think of ways you yourself can give back to your community or even change the world.

You don’t have to live with ingrown toenails Most of us at one time have developed painful ingrown toenails. Sometimes we are lucky and are able to cut out the corner of the toenail at home doing “bathroom surgery.” Other times we are not as lucky, and a painful, red draining nail corner occurs that can last for weeks, causing shoes to rub against the toe and create pain and disability. The physicians at Centers for Foot and Ankle Care are able to fix your toenail problem permanently with a short office procedure and have you walk out in regular shoes, without missing any of your normal activities.

The procedure, called a partial matrixectomy, is performed under local anesthesia and removes the deep, ingrown portion of the nail. Next, by applying an application of a safe chemical agent, the deep nail corners are cauterized and no longer are able to grow the painful nail corner again. A simple bandage is placed over the toe and the patient uses bandaids for the next few weeks while the toe heals. Call the nearest office for an appointment with one of our Foot and Ankle Care Specialists.

Safe sleep for babies:
What every parent needs to know Safety is a top priority for every parent. When it comes to sleep, giving your baby a safe sleeping environment is extremely important, but even the best caregivers can overlook small things that can have serious risks. Whether you’re a first-time parent or you’ve faced these questions before, here are some safety guidelines to keep in mind so you can provide your baby with the ideal sleep environment:
When it comes to sleep, giving your baby a safe sleeping environment is extremely important.
Mattress and sheets – Place your baby in a safety-approved crib with a firm mattress. When selecting a mattress for the crib, a firmer option is preferred over one that is too soft and flexible. Make sure that the mattress fits securely in the crib. You should not be able to fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib side. A quality, firm mattress will help keep your child sleeping safely and comfortably.

Bonus tip: Before purchasing a crib, visit www.cpsc.gov to make sure the crib you selected has not been recalled. In addition to a firm mattress, the crib sheet should fit snug so it stays put when your baby is in the crib. A sheet that is too loose may be a suffocation hazard. Crib bumper safety – A crib bumper that wraps around the inside of the crib will help protect your baby’s arms and legs from becoming caught between crib slats possibly resulting in bruised or broken limbs, or the development of neuropathy. A traditional crib bumper that is plush, pillowy and made with non-breathable fabrics increases the risks of suffocation. While it might seem parents are forced to choose between suffocation or entanglement risks, there is a safer alternative that addresses both concerns. Keep clutter out of crib - For most parents, all those cute stuffed animals and soft blankets might seem a natural fit for the crib, but unfortunately they all pose suffocation risks. Toys and stuffed animals are best saved for interactive play time. As for blankets, consider a wearable blanket that zips around your baby and can’t ride up over her face reducing the risks of suffocation. However, when using a wearable blanket, dress your baby lightly to avoid her getting too hot. Bonus tip: Set the room at a temperature that is comfortable for a lightly clothed adult. Safe sleep position – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend placing babies to sleep on their backs during naps and nighttime. Tummy-time play is important to strengthen neck, chest, shoulder and arm muscles. Placing a baby on her belly should be done when she is awake and closely supervised. When your baby is in the care of a sitter, family member or friend, remind them to put her to sleep on her back, as they may not realize its importance. By following these easy and important tips you’ll be able keep your baby safer when you put her to sleep, helping you both rest a bit easier.

... a difference Want to make a difference in the lives of others? Give the gift of your time. There are few things as satisfying as volunteering your time to make a difference in your community or support a cause you care about. The opportunities are endless - whether you have a few hours to spare or want to make a long-term commitment. Don’t know how to begin? Here are a few ideas from Rust-Oleum Cares. Since its inception, the program and associate-driven Day of Caring events have helped dozens of organizations and impacted the lives of hundreds of people in need. Food from the heart – Since food banks across the country experience a significant decrease in donations after the holiday season, organizing a food drive is one of the easiest ways to make an immediate difference in someone’s life. eling to a faraway place, why not reserve one day or more to work on a project you care about? Working together on a community service project is a great way to bring families closer and teach children the importance of giving back to the community. On a recent business trip, several members of the Rust-Oleum marketing team spent a day in their company’s birthplace, New Orleans, in a Day of Caring for Habitat for Humanity. Laying foundations for new homes in the fifth ward, a neighborhood hard hit by Hurricane Katrina six years ago, was a great team building experience and gave them a warm feeling that they have given back to a city that had given them so much.

A liberating choice: The freedom of retirement living The decision to move is never an easy one. In October of 2010, Ada King, a longtime resident of Ross, Ohio, became exhausted by the high level of maintenance her home required. Following a massive basement flood, she started to research retirement communities that would grant her the maintenance-free home she desired without sacrificing her independence or lively social life. Though a difficult choice to make, Ada knew it was ultimately right for her. She distinctly recalls her desperation on that Sunday afternoon when the basement pipes spewed water uncontrollably. “It was really the final straw. I thought to myself ‘I’m not going to do this anymore.’” After consulting with friends in the area who understood the difficulties of maintaining an aging household, she confidently chose to relocate to Berkeley Square’s retirement community. Her decision was based on rave reviews from friends that presently lived there, frequented the reputable Coach House Tavern & Grille, or sent their children

to the on-site intergenerational kindergarten. “Everyone I spoke with loved Berkeley Square – and really what’s not to love?” Excited and prepared to move into a spacious two-bedroom home by next spring, Ada received startling news. Her home, which seemed unlikely to attract interest in the plunging housing market, sold in a mere seven days. The situation left her scrambling to move into her new home nearly six months earlier than she had planned. “I was a mess,” she insists, “But I really couldn’t have done it without the help of the people at Berkeley Square. Because my house sold so quickly, they sped everything up for me to move in on time.” She credits Shelly Henderson, Director of Sales, as being her “rock” and helping her to become acclimated with her new home and neighborhood. With Shelly’s help, Ada was able to customize her two-bedroom home – everything from her large master suite and LIVING see page 10

Cedar Village celebrates grand opening of Rehabilitation Center Cedar Village Retirement Community, located in Mason, recently celebrated the grand opening of their newly expanded Rehabilitation Center. With board members, elected officials and a proclamation by the mayor and city council of Mason, the grand opening was well attended and provided a first-hand tour of the new facility before it opened to the public. The Rehabilitation Center at Cedar Village is now open and offers outpatient and inpatient therapy in a brand new state-of-the art therapy gym and an updated and remodeled 50-bed inpatient unit. The Rehabilitation Center has an experienced staff of therapists who provide consistency and specialize in all forms of therapy including occupational, physical and speech. Therapy is available seven days per week. The Rehabilitation Center is designed to meet individual patient needs. After hospitalization, inpatients recuperate and rehabilitate following surgery, illness or injury with the help of highly trained staff and equipment that can adjust for all levels of care. Outpatients can continue their progress with their same therapy team as they regain their strength and return to their daily lives. The Rehabilitation Center therapy gym incorporates active therapies commonly referred to as therapeutic exercise. Improved outcomes are accomplished with the help of state-of-the-art equipment including a medical laser for light therapy; recumbent bikes; resistive knee exercisers; weighted arm pulleys; rehabilitation treadmills; parallel bars and large screen “Wii-habilitation” activities. In addition Biodex balance trainers are the newest balance testing and train-
ing tool available. With four test protocols and six training modes, the Biodex helps identify individuals who are predisposed to injury and can help improve stabilization and range of motion. For life skills practice, the Rehabilitation Center has a full size kitchen, laundry, bedroom and bathroom suite incorporated into the therapy gym that allows therapists to work directly with patients in a safe and supervised setting. Clovernook achieves annual deficiency-free survey Clovernook HealthCare Pavilion and The Progressive Wound Centre has been recognized by the state and Ohio’s largest long-term care organization for achieving deficiency-free status. Clovernook HealthCare, home for 120 residents, was congratulated by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) for earning deficiency-free status in complete compliance with federal and state for health and life safety requirements-at the time of its annual survey in June 2011. During the survey a team of pro-
fessional reviewers from ODH check nursing care and services, environmental standards, dietary services, records, administration and every other aspect of providing care and housing to nursing care residents. The Ohio Health Care Association, the state’s largest organization representing longterm care facilities, also complimented administrator, Amy Mullowney and her staff for their achievement. Clovernook is a member of the organization, which represents more than 700 long-term care facilities
statewide. “Deficiency free surveys reflect significant efforts of facility staff and administration, and demonstrate a commitment to continued quality care, “ said Linda Black-Kurek, OHCA president. “The success of a facility in achieving this goal reflects well on the long-term care community across the state, and is an achievement for which administrators and their staff can take great pride and satisfaction,” she said. The facility received a special
certificate of recognition and congratulations from OHCA commemorating its success, and has been added to the roster of OHCA/OCAL/OCDD members achieving deficiency-free status on the Association’s website at www.ohca.org. Clovernook HealthCare Pavilion is located at 7025 Clovernook Ave.; is set on six beautifully landscaped acres and is centrally located in the middle of Hamilton County. Clovernook recently celebrated 30 years of serving the Tristate area.
LIVING from page 8 double-pantry kitchen to the extra bedroom for friends and out-of-town guests was designed to meet her needs. Sitting in her plush living room, looking out onto her patio, Ada recalls the transformation of her new home at Berkeley Square, “New cabinetry, carpet and even kitchen appliances – everything I asked for became a reality,” she chuckles. Even her cat, Milly, has adjusted to her new home, claiming Ada’s walk-in closet as her very own feline palace. Aside from enjoying her spacious living quarters, Ada has maintained her active lifestyle since moving to Berkeley Square. She even admits to, at times, feeling overwhelmed with the variety of activities at her disposal. Dabbling in all of Berkeley Square’s activities is her approach to experiencing all that her new neighborhood has to offer, though she is partial to yoga, happy hour, book club and bridge. She’s also made time for Cincinnati day-trips, including Pops orchestra performances as well as Playhouse in the Park. “Golf” she says, “is a favorite of

Everyone thinks we play because we’re very serious about golf, but really we go to have fun, eat lunch and chat!” She adds poignantly, “You don’t quit playing because you grow old. You grow old because you quit playing.” Almost a year after selling her home and relocating, Ada looks to the future with confidence and says she has “no regrets.” “It’s important to make up your mind, and decide what is best for you. That’s really what made the biggest difference for me.” Her decision to move to Berkeley Square was ultimately liberating, relinquishing her from tiresome burdens and granting her the freedom to enjoy a new lifestyle. It wasn’t an easy choice to make, but the peace of mind and security afforded to Berkeley Square residents like Ada ensures an unparalleled quality of life and staff who are dedicated to meeting the changing needs of residents. A choice that she maintains “is the best I could have made for myself.”
