he holidays are over, the kids are back in school, the weatherman is predicting snow, and suddenly, you’re staring down a long, cold and lonely winter. We can’t do anything about the weather, but these tips can help you get through the next three months without therapy. The first step to beating the winter blues is understanding and accepting them. It’s natural to feel let down after the excitement and anticipation of the holiday season has passed. It’s normal to be lessthan-enthused about the idea of longer nights and the threat of severe weather. Here are some easy ways to keep those doldrums at bay until spring:

» Shop local. No need to brave the malls; your neighborhood boasts lots of unique stores and boutiques offering all kinds of things for every need, often within walking distance. Plus, shopping local keeps the money right here in our community. » Have a cup of coffee. After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s nice to take time out and linger over a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate and watch the world go by from a seat in your neighborhood coffee shop. They’re often a hub of activity in the community, so you are likely to run into friends there, either ones you know or ones you don’t yet know. See WINTER, Page 8

Editor’s note Three weeks into January and two harbingers of spring already are on the horizon. I grew up next door to a family that every year, in the dead of winter, tucked gifts into the trunk, piled into the car and headed to family in a neighboring state to celebrate Groundhog Day. Two weeks later, it’s Valentine’s Day, and we’re more than halfway to the spring equinox. As good as this sounds, why let the longing for spring trump the joys of winter? Who can resist the marvel of a new snowfall? Or the fun of bundling the kids up and unabashedly sledding down the nearest slope, all the while keeping the prize of hot chocolate in sight? Best of all, winter’s cold temps and abbreviated daylight hours are nature’s call to regroup inside with family and friends. But as sure as spring follows winter, before long we’re all looking for ways to cure cabin fever, which is what this issue of Creative Living is all about. Plan a visit to a Creative Living advertiser today. Just like snowflakes, no two are alike. Happy reading. Specialty publications editor

Do you snore or know someone who does? You’re not alone! An estimated 40 million Americans snore. But while snoring can be disruptive to your or your partner’s sleep, it is often a symptom of a life-threatening condition called sleep apnea, where the airway collapses during sleep and causes the person to stop breathing and awaken with a gasp multiple times per hour. Untreated, sleep apnea can lead to excessive fatigue, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and even death. Left untreated, sleep apnea can shorten your lifespan by up to 18 years. Traditionally, obstructive sleep apnea has been treated with a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. But often patients cannot tolerate a CPAP because of the masks, hoses, noise and inconvenience. At the Snoring and Sleep Apnea Treatment Center, Dr. Kitzmiller and his wife, Lori, offer complimentary consultations to help snoring and sleep apnea patients with proper diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. If appropriate, Dr. Kitzmiller will provide the patient with Oral Appliance Therapy. An Oral Appliance is an FDA-approved CPAP-alternative that fits over your teeth and holds the lower jaw forward, keeping your airway from collapsing while you sleep. A snorer and sleep apnea patient himself, Dr. Kitzmiller tried CPAP

If your idea of the dentist is a kindly, grayhaired gentleman in a dusty office, prepare to be surprised. Because from the first time you step into Schussler Dentistry, it’s easy to see this is no old-fashioned experience. “We are a totally paperless practice,” said Tiffany BullerSchussler, DDS. “That means from the time you check in to the time we take an X-ray to the time we make your next appointment, it’s all digital.” But the high-tech approach doesn’t take away from the caring and concern that she and Megan Weisenberger, DMD, and the rest of the staff provide to every patient. The fullservice practice specializes in caring for all members of your family, from the kids up to the parents and grandparents. Schussler Dentistry provides all the dental care a busy family will need, including cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals and restoring dental implants. According to Dr. Buller-Schussler: “We provide oral diagnosis, health and wellness and restoration of the mouth to a healthy state.” February is national Children’s Dental Health Month, and Dr. Buller-Schussler is using this event to make

everyone aware of the importance of dental care for children, regardless of age. “Parents need to bring their children in as soon as they get their first teeth,” explained Dr. Buller-Schussler. “Baby teeth help function as space holders for permanent teeth and any early problems can affect them later in life.” For their youngest patients, Schussler Dentistry takes the time to make them feel comfortable and explain everything they’re doing in kid-friendly terms. And if that doesn’t work, they can supply “happy gas” (nitrous oxide) for an anxiety-free visit. Schussler Dentistry is located in Hebron, Ky., at 1960 North Bend Road, Suite A. They have office hours on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and evening and weekend appointments are available for busy working parents and children in school. Call 859-653-0525 to make your appointment, or visit them at www.schusslerdentistry .com for more information. Schussler Dentistry accepts most preferred provider insurance plans. During Children’s Dental Health Month and anytime, Schussler Dentistry is waiting to serve you.

New kitchen countertops are in your future There are a number of reasons a homeowner might consider remodeling the kitchen and replacing thecountertops. Many people replace outdated laminate countertops in the hopes of giving their home the competitive edge to sell quickly. Others make over the kitchen in a home that they have just purchased to better suit their own tastes. Still others simply update kitchen countertops to more current styles. No matter what the reason for replacing your current countertops, you are faced with a daunting task of choosing between many types of surfaces in a myriad of colors, textures and styles. Excellence By Nature is

your locally owned and operated countertop company with an experienced and knowledgeable staff that offer a wealth of knowledge and ideas. While thecountertop focus and specialty is granite, Excellence By Nature also offers solid surfaces, including Corian, several quartz brands, laminate and tile as options. Choosing your particular granite color from a sample is acceptable, but selecting the specific slab that will be used for your project is an absolute MUST. Due to granite’s natural properties, each slab is unique and you will want to be able to select the exact slab that will be used for your countertops. Convenient-

ly located 5 minutes from Florence Mall and 15 minutes from downtown Cincinnati, Excellence By Nature keeps a wide selection of granite slabs in stock right on the premises. Our store is at 9250 Brookfield Court, Suite 400. Although replacing kitchen countertops with granite is one of the most popular remodeling projects, there are a multitude of other uses for this versatile stone. Excellence By Nature maintains a large supply of granite remnants that can be purchased at discounted rates and used for bathroom vanity countertops, shower curbs and shelves, fireplaces, floor accents, wall caps and furniture

tops. Granite offers a natural beauty that can’t be duplicated by any man-made surface available on the market today. It has been proven that granite countertops will draw more appeal when it’s time to sell your home. Many granite companies, including local bigbox stores and many national chains, subcontract the template, fabrication or installation of granite and other types of countertops. At Excellence By Nature, each granite countertop is templated, fabricated and installed by its specialized crew of experts in the field. Keeping all of this work in-house allows us to maintain a high level of quality con-

trol throughout the process of fabricating and installing your new countertops. It also allows you to work handson with the specialists in the production of your new countertops. If you choose, you can work side by side with the production manager at Excellence By Nature to lay out your job on the granite slab of your choice. Sarah Hoff, operations manager and interior designer at Excellence By Nature, says that January and February are great months to tackle home remodeling projects, especially having new countertops installed. “The stress and See KITCHEN, Page 12

Curves is the only place you can get all three, and Curves locations in Northern Kentucky want you to try it FREE for one week. “For many women, managing the simple logistics of sticking to a diet and exercise plan is what defeats them,” says Becky Ostendorf, Ft. Thomas Curves owner. “Meal planning and preparation, shopping, designing an effective and age-appropriate exercise plan, coping with everyday emotional highs and lows – it can be overwhelming. Sometimes it seems easier to stick with the status quo. That’s why our new Curves Complete program provides a foolproof plan for dealing with all of these diet challenges, and helps keep women on track for success.” Adds Mary Ellen Rechtin, owner of Curves Villa Hills, “The Curves Complete program incorporates all three key components of a successful weight-management plan and is designed to help dieters lose up to 20 pounds and 20 inches in just 90 days.” Women are seeing real results and sharing their success stories with others at www.facebook.com/ curves. It’s not because there’s something wrong with them, it’s because there’s something wrong with conventional weight-loss plans. To lose weight and keep it off, you need three secret weapons: » Diet: Weekly personalized diet plans and shopping lists created through the Curves Complete website, available exclusively to Curves Complete members. These tools help dieters enjoy the convenience and portion control of expensive mail-order diet food programs while shopping at their own grocery stores – and for a fraction of the cost! The plan even offers a convenient new Heat & Eat option so that dieters can include healthy frozenfood choices like Lean Cuisine® and Healthy Choice® in their diet plans. » Exercise: Workouts at Curves in Northern Kentucky that combine metabolism-boosting cardio with strengthtraining and stretching while providing a continually more challenging workout experience as fitness improves. » Motivation: Daily motivational videos pro-

duced through a partnership with the renowned Cleveland Clinic that offer advice and strategies from a panel of experts to help you make healthy choices and keep the weight off. Plus, one-on-one time with your personal coach each week to support, encourage and motivate. “Personal coaching is the heart of the program,” said Pam Westerman, owner of Curves in Florence and Independence. “All Curves Complete participants receive a Health Assessment and a 15-minute, personalized, weekly coaching session with a certified Curves Coach that includes a weigh-in, progress assessment, goal review and monthly body measurements to track results. That extra accountability is very motivating, and the coaches help you develop simple, practical strategies for getting and staying on track.” For more information about Curves Complete and the FREE TRIAL WEEK OFFER offered by the Curves in Northern Kentucky, please call 1-800-CURVES30 or visit curveskentucky.com.

Body by Zerona takes off what diet, exercise won’t Body by Zerona, located at 618 Buttermilk Pike in Crescent Springs, offers Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky residents a nonsurgical and painless alternative to traditional liposuction. The latest in safe LipoLaser is here! You can lose inches of pure body fat in just weeks – with no surgery, no pain, no shots, no pills, no starving or strict dieting, no strenuous exercise and no recovery time. This FDA-approved procedure has shown that the Zerona Laser creates a small pore in the fat cell, enabling the fat to seep out of the cell. The melted fat is then passed out of the

body during its normal course of detoxification. The Zerona Laser can focus on areas of the body that tend to be difficult to target with regular diet and exercise. It also works on smoothing cellulite. Another benefit is that it can treat several body areas at once. The procedure consists of a Certified Tech aiming the Zerona Laser at your trouble areas on your front side. You relax for 20 minutes, flip over, and receive 20 minutes of treatment on your back side. Then you’re treated to a relaxing HydroMassage, which stimulates your lymphatics to release the melted fat. A beautiful smile makes a big difference The holidays are over and the New Year is upon us. The shopping is done, packages are opened and the gift-giving is over – at least for 2011. Why not make a resolution to prioritize your health in 2012? Now is the perfect time to focus on your dental needs and overall oral health. Whether you are in an emergency situation or want the smile of your dreams, Gentle Dental Care is the office for you. The staff provides TLC from your first phone call, a hot beverage when you walk in, and makes sure all of your questions are answered before you leave. There is not one reason to put off picking up the phone and setting up an appointment today.

Because they specialize in treating dental anxiety, it is common for the staff at Gentle Dental Care to see patients who haven't been to the dentist in many years. PROVIDED

If it has been a while since you have seen a dentist, you are not alone. Dr. Dallmann and her team know that you are embarrassed because of the length of time since seeing a dentist. They hear stories just like yours all day long, and you will not be ridiculed or reprimanded. Because they special-

ize in treating dental anxiety, it is normal to see patients who haven’t been to the dentist in many years, sometimes decades. Dr. Dallmann always tells these patients that the first call is the most difficult step and it only gets easier from there. Here is what one of Dr. Dallmann’s patients had

to say: It has been many years since I have seen a dentist. I am so embarrassed because I am a nurse and know very well the importance of regular checkups. My children see the dentist on a regular basis and now that they are a little older they are starting to ask me who my dentist is. I really thought

when I saw Dr. Dallmann she would yell at me for the state of my mouth, but she did not. She was kind and understanding, as was the whole staff. Brenda helped me set up a payment plan and I am now scheduled for my first sedation. I look forward to waking to a beautiful and healthy smile. I feel like a weight has been lifted off of me. Thank you girls! B. A., Independence, Ky. People are experiencing the difference at Gentle Dental Care every day. 2012 is the time to make that call. Prices range from $15.25 to $16.25 for most 375 mL, but a few specialty oils, such as white truffle oil, cost more. Flying Olive is at 2220 Grandview Drive. you smile more

January is when we think about our New Year’s resolutions, and we tend to hear the same ones: eat better, exercise more and stop smoking. What we don’t hear often is, “I’ll visit my dentist every six months,” or “brush twice every day.” This year, make a resolution that’s attainable and one you can smile about. Our greatest suggestion is to smile more. Brushing twice and flossing once daily, and visiting the dentist regularly will help keep your

smile healthy. But using your smile reaps numerous other benefits, too. Smiling helps you stay positive, makes you more attractive and makes you seem more successful because you appear more confident when you smile. Smiling relieves stress, which helps boost your immune system, and it changes your mood by releasing endorphins, natural painkillers, and serotonin, which together make you feel good. Happy New Year … and keep smiling!

What are the requirements for olive oil to be classified as extra-virgin? Wade Halsey knows the answers. Halsey is the owner of Flying Olive in Fort Mitchell, Ky., and carries 21 varieties of extra-virgin olive oil at his shop. “To be classified as extra-virgin, the oil must be first cold-pressed,” Halsey said. First press is the oil produced from a batch of crushed olives the first time the pulp is pressed at a temperature below 80 degrees, explains Halsey. “In addition, there are the requirements that the oil cannot have more than eight-tenths of one percent acidity, and the olives must be crushed within 24 hours of harvest,” Halsey said. More oil can be extracted after the first pressing but requires other methods to extract the oil from the crush, such as increased heat or chemical processing. Hence, the oil does not qualify for classification as extravirgin. If the olive oil does not say extra-virgin on the bottle label, then it isn’t extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), says Halsey. For those who are new to the wonderful flavors of olive oil on salads, pasta, fish and many other dishes, Halsey recommends a couple of his favorites. “A 50/50 pairing of blood orange extra-virgin oil with either cranberry pear balsamic vinegar or Sicilian lemon balsamic vinegar makes a tasty salad,” he said. Another favorite is salmon sautéed in blood orange extra-virgin oil, taking care not to cook over 350 degrees, to

Is there a visible weight loss – loose-hanging clothes, for example? Proper nutrition is the key to healthy aging. » Does your parent wear the same clothes, perhaps with food stains – a sign that the steps to

the laundry have become unmanageable? » Is the house or yard not as tidy and clean as it used to be? This may be a sign that the day-to-day responsibilities may be too much. » Is your parent able to take medications correctly? Improperly taking medications can cause many health problems. » Is your parent turning down once-standing lunch or dinner dates
