Dear Community, An IDEA starts with ONE person, BUT “It Takes a Community,” to make that IDEA come to life, grow, and make an impact! In this issue we highlight people, events, and organizations that have launched into creating community impact. Along with featuring events, resources and we discuss some of the challenges that the whole community is facing as we navigate 2024, along with celebrating some remarkable companies and organizations. Collaboration and community are essential to everyones success. This year, more then ever we need to work together instead of against eachother. The question I would like all of us to think about as we navigate this year is: How can we make an IMPACT in the community, so EVRYONE is seen, heard, and valued, while being able to access ALL the resources & support they NEED to be successful?

HOW:

TOGETHER WE CAN & WILL

DESIGN the

SHIFT

By bringing together individuals, organizations, businesses, and not-forprofit or non-profit agencies, we will connect those who have the skills, tools and resources with those who have a need for their support but are unsure where to turn for help. The Design the Shift initiative will provide a comprehensive list of resources that can be easily navigated; further it’s a space for organizations, businesses and not-for-profit or non-profit agencies to meet and learn together. It Takes a Community! HOPE:

WHY: Design the Shift was born from the recognition that there is a need in our community to create a collaborative hub to support our constituents/stakeholders as they search for resources to support their specific needs and community.

Design the Shift will spark hope and will encourage connection, bringing community together in service to others. Collaboration is an essential part of building a stronger more diverse community. ENGAGE. TOGETHER.

INSPIRE.

EDUCATE.

Design the Shift was created in recognition of the following: Individuals in our community are struggling with a myriad of problems: People don’t know where to look for help. People don’t know what kind of help they might need. People struggle to navigate what can be a complex system. People may be reluctant or unable to seek support because cost is a barrier. Design the Shift was also created to provide a solution to these problems through collaboration and connection: Assist individuals, organizations, businesses, and agencies to connect with individuals in search of their services. Many organizations are small and do not have the staff or the resources needed to market their services. Accordingly, individuals may therefore be unable to find the resources they need – even though they exist. Members of the Design the Shift collaborative hub, will benefit through: Being a part of the community that seeks to be of service to those in need. Marketing and advertising support through Community Now! Magazine and more! Community based events and storytelling opportunities. Networking opportunities, bringing like-minded individuals together to connect, collaborate and learn from each other. It would allow organizations to: -

Get their name out there – showcasing and sharing their offerings with the broader community. An avenue to connect individuals to resources. An opportunity for corporate to engage their staff to give back to others in a manner that differs from traditional undertakings.

It will also allow Organizations to: -

Meet people in all industries. Learn through various workshops. Collaborate on events, fundraising, and other opportunities. Build a hub to create more opportunities for each other and the community at large.

Our objective is to launch a Pilot Project with the creation of a collaborative hub to address the problems our community has identified! To Get Involved email kmalden@communitynowmagazine.com

The Women of Influence Nanaimo – WIN Network is about embracing a collective community mindset. We all know the importance of a network and joining together, but often we feel very alone and left to survive in our silent struggle. This doesn’t have to be our normal. The WIN Network is committed to changing the loneliness narrative and creating a safe harbour for people to connect and thrive. This Network will drive various initiatives to help progress our mental, emotional, physical, and professional lives. Women of Influence Nanaimo is about creating safe spaces to share our stories, amplify of voices, inspire action, influence our sphere, and celebrate one another.

emotional intelligence and help overcome the challenges they face.

This Network is an inclusive platform geared to support and celebrate the power of being influential. Women, non-binary, 2-spirit, and gender-diverse people all over Nanaimo are influencing the world in positive and revolutionary ways. They are mothers, parents, leaders, entrepreneurs, business owners, creators, STEM pioneers, activists, artists, tradespeople, philanthropists, and so much more. Our goal is to normalize the perception of women in these roles by championing what they do, who they are, and their character rather than the gender they identify with. Inclusion lies in the contrast between a sense of belonging and the pressure for people to “fit in” to groups, communities, or cultures. The WIN Network supports people from all walks of life to thrive through healthy relationships that build

Community over Competition

them

We are about applauding being perfectly imperfect. Rather than presenting a fake mask of a final point of success, we share the journey, the flops, the wins, and the lessons learned along the way. We ardently work to highlight the stories of a broad spectrum of people, and we recognize that we can’t progress individually unless we move forward collectively. We are a platform of allies and not about lip service. We all are fashioned to assemble in the beautiful mosaic puzzle of life.

A night to remember! On Feb 7, 2024, the community of Nanaimo came together to celebrate the accomplishments of remarkable women, non-binary, 2-spirit, and gender-diverse people all over Nanaimo. The room was filled with 620 people! Community Now! Magazine was there to present the award for Community & Social Responsibility. “I can honestly say after being in a room full of people, who were there to celebrate each other and raise awareness and money for a remarkable cause (Footprints)… the city of Nanaimo has a strong, supportive, diverse community, and I was grateful to be apart of such an inspiring event.” - Krista Malden, founder of Community Now! Magazine.

Blaise founded the non-profit organization, Footprints in 2018 after experiencing three miscarriages of her own. She felt the lack of empathy in the system and the barbaric practices that take place. Determined to heal her heart and ensure no other parent goes what she went through, Blaise became the change. She also wanted to create a safe haven for dads too. Men grieve too! Unfortunately, even in the 21st century, there aren't many resources for grieving dads. Blaise created regular support group meetings which transitioned to online during the pandemic and continues today with her Facebook Group. Blaise partnered with her local community and the medical staff to create hand-made support bags to be given out on the frontlines and mailed all over the world free of charge. These bags include mental health resource tools, a certificate of life, a Footprints bracelet, a copy of Blaise's book Heroine, and helpful information for men and women to assist them in this process. Bags are available in Nanaimo and at the Bonnyville Medical Clinic and the Cold Lake Primary Care Network. If you live outside these areas, Blaise will mail a support bag to you free of charge. If you or someone you know is going through infertility or experiencing a loss of a pregnancy or a baby, please contact the Footprints team at blaisethetrail@gmail.com and a support bag will be mailed out to you. If you are needing further support, someone from Footprints will assist you in your journey. Blaise also offers a 4-week video series to help with the emotional aspect of healing. When you feel lost in your grief, you can always go to the MAPP to find your way back to peace.

HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THE SYSTEMS CHANGE? Opinion Column by Jett Jackson

When we think about the legal system, we imagine a system that was put in place to help protect people and ensure that we can resolve family, civil and criminal matters.

When will our family legal systems start working in the best interest of the children? When will they start getting abusers help and protecting the abused.

If you have never been through the legal system…be thankful and stay away from it. Today we will look at the family legal system.

FACT: people often say “why didn’t she just leave” when talking about domestic violence situations. A woman often stays in an abusive relationship to protect the children. But if a woman with children leaves the abuser, the court system still makes the children go and see the abusers, the mother can not be there to protect the children. (((read that again: the mother can not protect the children if she isn’t there))) Even if there is proof of abuse, the court systems do NOT protect the children or the person being abused, but the abuser gets to continue to just be, instead of having the court system send them to jail for abuse and or to therapy for help.

Recently in Calgary Alberta a mother had her life taken outside of her kids’ school by her expartner. What a tragic loss. Our hearts go out to the children and her family and friends. This case had been heard in our family legal system more then once, in fact the person who took her life, (and his own life) was her ex husband who had already been charged with domestic violence and had a do not contact order in place… - he was not in jail, and all she had to protect her and the kids was a piece of paper saying he was not to contact her or be with in so many feet of her. “In the best interest of the child” is what family law is supposed to be based around. In this case (along with multiple other family law cases) the legal system FAILED, not only a mother, but two children and a father. Recently I heard an alarming quote. “For every 1 NHL player that has a concussion, there is 7000 women who have undiagnosed concussions due to partner & domestic violence” (Kix Citton) READ THAT AGAIN!!!

How many people must die due to domestic violence before the system will change? How many families need to go bankrupt due to paying lawyers and court fees before the system will change? When will the government put family law, civil and criminal law on the table to redo, discuss and improve? It's time, that we start discussing ALL the cases our SYSTEMS have failed. It’s TIME to CHANGE how our legal system & other supporting system work.

Healing Together Creates Great Universal Change Bridgett Rae-Evans

Mental Health can be strenuous these days. There are so many things that no longer work for us as times have changed and trauma has changed along side it. But there is good news and one thing that you can do for yourself, that can change your everyday mental health. Our environments dictate how to place our boundaries incorrectly, as it has been based on learned methods and is not technically ours. The good news is there is an easy way to fix this and be able to move forward standing strong in your strengths and beliefs. This method will help you identify where you allow others to perhaps use you as a dumping ground... For example, if they come to you with all their strife and frustration, they may ask you for help and clarity about a relationship, a work situation, or a family situation, and of course you help them, and they say that they always feel better after talking to you, and you are always willing to help... Yet you feel exhausted and don't know why. Now tell me what are you going to do with their STUFF you have just taken on? As it doesn’t necessarily go away. How do you recognize this and what should you do next,

Over may years of environmental change, we have forgotten how important we are as individuals and the understanding of true boundaries. These days we set boundaries which belong to the people you link them to; they are not YOURS. They are all people, just like you and me. Everyone should treat everyone the same, with decency, respect and honour. So why do you allow them to treat you differently, or others better than you? If you treat people badly, why should they treat you any better. Even when people have a title or are a company owner or a doctor, they are still people like you and I. If you treat people with decency, respect and honour, they will usually do the same to you. It is when you allow them to do otherwise that there is an imbalance in your life. As you start to think about these things you will realize how much your boundaries change from one person to another and one situation to another.

Is this their issue or is this a mirror of your own issues? Mental Health is not all about modern medicine. A lot of issues can be cleared with more of a holistic approach, such as meditation, Counselling, breathe work, etc. Over a period of time, I have worked with many clients that have found that approaches such as Past life traiting, self belief and modern counselling are found to be more empowering and beneficial, mentally, emotionally and physically. Soul Pathing* has also made a huge difference.

We allow our parents to treat us one way and our siblings to treat us another way and coworkers or our boss to treat us in a totally different way. Now if you were to look at this on a scale system you would see that this goes up and down all day long depending on who you are with or what the situation may be. You are sending your emotions and physical body into complete turmoil, going up and down all day long. That is not good for anyone, and you should by seeing these, realize that these are not your boundaries but the ones of the people you are dealing with at the time.

Your boundaries should look like a straight line. Your boundaries are yours, the same for everyone, no matter what. You would not let a stranger treat you like dirt so why would you let a family member do it. You would not allow your boss to be abusive so why would you let your partner be that way? We are taught to be respectful of our elders, but shouldn’t we expect the same from them? We give our kids a little leeway as we would say, “oh they are only kids”, but we are teaching them that they can get away with things as well as being disrespectful. Then as they get older, they expect the same and wonder why they don’t get it. So with this in mind, I want you to write one thing at a time on each right hand side page again. The ways you would either expect to be treated or not treated. Things you would be willing to accept in your life or not. What would you allow and want your life to look like? Every choice that you make in this book reflects on how you see yourself and treat yourself. So if you do not love yourself, you do not command love or expect someone to treat you in a loving way. If you do not respect yourself, you would not expect respect and allow others to treat you badly. If you put yourself down for any reason, others follow. Nobody deserves to be treated badly in any shape or form at any point in his or her life.

So, from what you have now learnt about yourself, it is time to figure out your boundaries. Be proud. You are claiming your life back. As you move forward in your life remember what it was like to be lost and holding on to so many thins that were no longer serving you, as well as all the toxic emotions you once carried. It is the greatest reminder to not go down the same road you have travelled before. No you can make choices with clarity and easy and be very clear on what you want in your life. You may sit and enjoy in times of need, or for fun, the wonderful words that have been written for you on your rock collection. It will uplift your spirit on a bad day and show you how you shape this world for others and for yourself. Your life now belongs to you. Be your best and true self. * SoulPathing.com

Dear Fellow Canadians, On January 31, the Premier of Alberta announced sweeping changes that directly impact the rights and protections historically afforded to 2SLGBTQ+ youth in our province. Before delving into the ramifications of this announcement, there’s a critical point we must make clear. Every 2SLGBTQ+ charity that raises its voice in dissent, expressing disapproval in whatever form necessary, faces a significant risk. This risk is not just theoretical; it’s a stark reality. These organizations, which tirelessly advocate for and support 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, have witnessed a steady decline in provincial funding since 2019. This decline threatens their very ability to operate and serve those in need. If you find yourself outraged by these recent developments and stand in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQ+ community, understand that support requires more than words. It takes more than liking social media posts, sharing them to your story, or discussing these injustices over coffee. These organizations desperately need funding—financial support from corporations, unions, and individuals who stand with the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Yes, Stonewall Recovery urgently needs your support to fully launch and continue our mission. However, we are not alone in this fight. Organizations like Skipping Stone, End of the Rainbow, and SafeLink have been on the front lines for years, witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of hate and injustice. We urge you to choose a queer charity in Alberta and support them with whatever you can financially, please remember any amount helps. Moreover, we specifically call on you to support Egale Canada and Skipping Stone as they prepare to launch a crucial lawsuit to protect queer youth in this province—a lawsuit that is not only necessary but critical in these trying times. In the coming days, Stonewall Recovery will be carefully analyzing the Premier's video and will issue a more detailed response that will address it from our reading of The Convention of Rights of Children and Youth We stand at a pivotal moment in history, one that requires action, compassion, and solidarity. Let's come together to ensure that the rights and dignities of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals are not only preserved but championed. In response to the announcement about the recent Transgender and Gender Diverse policy measures: Community Now! Stands with our #trans colleagues, readers, partners, and community members, today & always. A child’s voice should never be silenced. When a child doesn’t feel safe talking to a parent, there is a reason…why don’t we ask children that question? And listen! When a child/children can not discuss things with a parent they NEED a safe adult that they trust to turn too. (key word is trust) Teachers spend a lot of time with our children, and taking their ability to be a safe and trustworthy adult away from them will ensure that their jobs get harder, and both children and teachers will be unsuccessful in their roles in education. “In the best interest of the child.” A statement we use in our family court systems. (but don’t follow) We should ensure that any policy made impacting children is INFACT in the best interest of the child, which means we need to start listening instead of enforcing. - Krista Malden #ittakesacommunity #togetherwearestronger

Feb 3 2-24 was a testament to how beautiful and strong the 2SLGBTQIA+ community is. Over, 1000 people came out to support, protect and fight for the rights of hashtag#transyouth and hashtag#nonbinaryyouth. It is such an honour to be part of a community that shows up for one another. We stand in full support with the hashtag#trans and hashtag#queer community and will not accept inhumane treatment🏳️‍⚧️ Thank you to everyone who showed up and shared their experiences. Special shout out to Court Ellingson for being a leader and advocate in hashtag#albertagovernment and hashtag#yycqueerinnovation hashtag#yycqueer hashtag#transyouthmatter hashtag#transrightsarehumanrights hashtag#yyctrans hashtag#albertatrans hashtag#qieercommunity hashtag#strongertogether YYC Queer Innovation Meetups – Queering Innovation

There is a LOT of misinformation out these days! Many of the things shared by the premier, the government and others, just aren’t accurate, so we’re starting a ‘FACTS not FICTIONS’ series to set the record straight, starting with one of the most important: Family

support

is

one

of

the

top

resiliency

factors

for

trans

youth.

Trans serving organizations and provides unanimously believe in keeping families together and building the strongest possible supports other than exceptional circumstances where the child is actively being harmed. We believe in meeting parents where they are at & providing them with the support and learning they need to help their child thrive.
