The program is designed for job seekers who want to understand how artificial intelligence tools can help with the employment search. Topics may include using AI to refine resumes and cover letters, research employers, prepare for interviews and organize the job-search process.

Artists Invited To Enter MithilaVerse.

West Windsor Arts is accepting entries for “MithilaVerse: Folk Meets Future,” an art show connected to Mithila art and contemporary interpretation.

Artists may submit up to three works for consideration. The entry fee is $25 for West Windsor Arts members and $35 for nonmembers. The submission period runs through Monday, Aug. 3.

The opportunity is designed for artists interested in exploring the connection between folk traditions and contemporary creative practice. Ceramic Scavenger Hunt Sends Art Into Princeton. The Arts Council of Princeton will hold a Ceramic Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, July 12, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Participants follow the Arts Council on Instagram, where clues will be posted through Stories showing where ceramic

pieces have been hidden. The Arts Council will hide a few pieces at a time, post clues, then give participants time to search before posting the next batch.

People who find a ceramic piece get to keep it and can enter to win a grand prize by posting a photo of the found piece to their Instagram Story and tagging the Arts Council. The event is free, family-friendly and open to all. For more information go to artscouncilofprinceton.org.

Community Singers Pop-Up Choir.

Pop-Up Choir Princeton will meet Tuesday, July 14, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Arts Council of Princeton. The free program is an allages community singing experience where families, neighbors and music lovers can sing together without auditions or pressure.

Participants do not need previous choir experience.

Rather than dividing singers by age or gender, participants choose the vocal range that feels best: low, middle or high. Families can sit together and sing the same part or try harmony. Quilt Guild Offers Card-Making Workshop. The Arts Council of Princeton will host a gallery talk and card-making workshop with the Princeton Sankofa Stitchers Modern Quilt Guild on Saturday, July 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Taplin Gallery.

Participants will use fabric scraps to create designs on cardstock using glue and scissors. The workshop is connected to the exhibition “Ten Years of Threads: The Princeton Sankofa Stitchers Modern Quilt Guild’s Journey Through Fabric and History,” on view July 11 through Aug. 8.

Watercolor Artists Can Submit Work. The Arts Council of Princeton’s artist-opportunities page lists a call for the New Jersey Watercolor Society’s 84th Annual Open Juried Exhibition.

The call is open to New Jersey artists age 18 and older, as well as NJWS signature members living outside New Jersey.

Artists working in watercolor and water media are invited to submit work for consideration.

The submission deadline is Monday, Aug. 17. The exhibition will run Oct. 4 through 24 at Middletown Arts Center, with accepted artists eligible for more than $8,000 in cash and merchandise awards. For more information go to artscouncilofprinceton.org.

Screenwriters Can Submit To New Hope. The New Hope Film Festival Script Competition is accepting screenplays for consideration, with a regular deadline of Friday, Aug. 28.

The competition gives screenwriters a separate pathway from film submissions, allowing writers to submit scripts even if the work has not been produced. Later deadlines continue into the fall and winter, but the regular deadline offers a lower-cost submission window.

The opportunity may appeal to writers working on feature scripts, shorts or other screen projects who want to connect their work to the New Hope Film Festival’s broader programming. For more information go to filmfreeway.com.

TASK Seeks Volunteers And Donation Drives. Trenton Area Soup Kitchen is seeking volunteers, community groups and businesses interested in supporting its hunger-relief work.

Groups of two to 20 people can volunteer together during meal service, making the opportunity suitable for scouts, religious groups, athletic teams, workplaces and other organizations.

Businesses can also explore corporate volunteering as a team-building and community-service opportunity.

Anchor House Supports Youth In Crisis. Anchor House in Trenton offers services for youth and young adults ages 12 to 24 who have run away, are at risk, are experiencing homelessness, are aging out of child welfare or are dealing with abuse or neglect.

The organization provides safe housing, crisis intervention, street outreach, counseling, life skills, educational assistance and youth leadership development.

All services are free.

Final weekend for ‘Word on Front’ at Passage Theatre

“Word on Front 250,” Passage Theatre’s annual festival of music, spoken word and solo performances, has one more weekend to run. It ends Sunday, July 12.

The festival’s final weekend offers solo performances by Passage’s former artistic director June Ballinger, its current artistic director, Brishen Miller, the always interesting Zuhairah McGill, and others.

“Word on Front 250,” the number referring to the semiquincentennial anniversary — say that seven times fast — of the Declaration of Independence, also has a subtitle, “The Untold America,” which itself has a subscript: “This is the history we’re desperate to tell.”

Ballinger, who presided over Passage Theatre for several creative years — and a theater program at Burlington County Community College before that — returns to present her solo show, “Crone Barrier,” about what happens to a particular woman when she is taken, not necessarily voluntarily, to a women’s sexual empowerment workshop.

The Virgin Mary and an individual’s sense of power figure into the story, which runs at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 10, and 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 11.

America’s 250th anniversary, most notably selections from the new musical “The Crossing,” about George Washington’s significant Christmas night crossing of the Delaware River to attack British and Hessian troops encamped near Trenton.

“The Crossing,” subtitled “A Revolutionary New Musical,” was presented Thursday, July 2, and Friday, July 3. The musical is being produced in partnership with TenCrucialDays. org and was conceived from the belief that history is not something we leave behind, but something we continually step into with courage, clarity and heart.

The July performances were workshop presentations. “The Crossing” is expected to debut at the Trenton War Memorial in December 2026.

The musical commemorates the December 1776 surprise attack on enemy troops, an event that changed the course of the Revolutionary War and gave the Americans a first and desperately needed victory.

The 10 days referred to in the musical’s title are Dec. 25, 1776, to Jan. 3, 1777, the period when the newly independent Americans and British forces fought on battlefields from Trenton to Princeton. Passage Theatre’s

Mill Hill Playhouse is near the site of the Trenton battles. The story is told by diverse, often overlooked voices.

The piece, with book and lyrics by Jason Huza and music by John Allen Watts, shows potential. From the first-act excerpts seen July 2, “The Crossing” looks at Washington’s critical maneuver from the point of view of ordinary 18th-century Americans who participate in the Revolution as soldiers, volunteers and advocates. Various motives for backing the Revolution, or abstaining from the fight for American independence, are presented.

These passages impress, but they need more texture and fleshing out to be totally effective.

Scenes with these characters, mostly New Jersey citizens drawn to a cause their colony had not fully embraced as a political entity, are juxtaposed with telling sequences from George Washington’s headquarters on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River and bits of Thomas Paine pontificating or inspiring.

Huza’s script could use some honing on historical matters.

Characters muse about how their hometowns, Orange and Cranbury, New Jersey, got their names. It’s easy enough to clarify. The naming of Orange is obvious to anyone familiar with British history — hint: William and Mary, the Glorious Revolution, 1688 — and the character from Cranbury is on the right track. Any reference can tell you how close.

The portrait of Thomas Paine, he of “Common Sense” and later “The Rights of Man,” is passable in terms of theatrical license, although Paine was hardly the gentlemanly man of letters depicted.

Thank you, thank you, John Allen Watts, for signaling after the first scene of “The Crossing” that the volume needed to be softened. Sound designers in general pitch amplification way too high — way, way too high. I had to cup my ears to catch dialogue and lyrics in the opening sequences. The sound was eating the actors’ voices.

Watts signaled with his hands that it needed to be cut down a notch or 12.

Princeton Summer Theater Review — ‘The 39 Steps’

In theatrical inventiveness, ingenuity, gymnastics, energy and fun, the Princeton Summer Theater production of Patrick Barlow’s “The 39 Steps” rates high marks.

Characters called Clown 1 and Clown 2 (Joe McLean and Jordan Rashdan) live up to the billing, reveling in broad humor, flamboyant parody and comic aplomb while Shaelin McKenna basks in an assortment of femmes fatales, and Jacob Schorsch adds a series of droll reactions and takes to his role as the hero relied on for a tinge of seriousness among the vaudeville.

Even Florencia Curchitser’s lighting accelerates the amusement director Erik Bloomquist choreographs so carefully. A silhouette of biplanes chasing focal character Richard Hannay (Schorsch) while his dialogue notes he’s running north by northwest is one of several gems.

But — and this is a big one — while orchestrated mayhem became the raison d’etre for staging “The 39 Steps” after Barlow rewrote a spoof by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 pre-World War II thriller and made it a decade-long hit in London and then the world, there’s an obverse side to Barlow’s script.

Mystery.

The aforementioned thriller Hitchcock adapted from John Buchan’s 1915 novel referred to German spying within Britain during World War I, but Hitchcock used it presciently to underscore Nazi menace in 1935.

It is an intense story of espionage, constant danger, and nail-biting captures and escapes.

That has to be on the stage alongside the spoof, distinctly in spite of it. Creative goofing is entertaining. It has been since Og did a fake Dick Van Dyke-ish tumble over a rock and set his fellow cave dwellers roaring with laughter. “The 39 Steps” provides more.

It carries a genuinely interesting mystery within its story, a mystery that has to emerge and claim equal time to any hijinks, clever or hilarious as they may be.

Since first seeing Maria Aitken’s original production of Barlow’s “The 39 Steps” at London’s Criterion Theatre in 2006 (and again in 2009), I’ve seen probably three dozen stagings at venues ranging from major regional houses to larky basement operations. I’d say directors batted one for eight (.125 average) in meshing comedy with intrigue. I also admit it took me a few minutes to

Erik Bloomquist meets “The 39 Steps’” fish-or-fowl challenge halfway. Well, maybe 60/40, with the edge going toward clowning. His first act leans decidedly toward broad comedy, with McLean and Rashdan given seeming carte blanche to go for laughs, which they do with limber relish, although the most impressive bit of physical legerdemain was Schorsch wriggling from beneath the entwined corpse of McKenna’s Annabella Schmidt to get Hannay’s cross-Britain adventure started.

In that wriggling sequence, Schorsch defies bodily limitations.

McLean and Rashdan make a dedicated habit of doing that, twisting themselves into and out of a string of complex poses but being funnier when they exaggerate or parody a character, usually a woman, who could be played straight but who flounces, makes moues, winks, falls, becomes clumsy or flirts with ardent but hopeless abandon.

Meanwhile, Hannay is fighting for his personal freedom, having been accused by circumstantial evidence of killing Schmidt and, more importantly, of having been entrusted with information about a plot Nazi sympathizers are hatching. He must stay at liberty while using skills he developed in Britain’s diplomatic corps to find out if Schmidt was on the level about a German cell operating on British soil.

Spotlighting Hannay’s plight is where Bloomquist’s “The 39 Steps” needs more effort. The joking, including myriad Hitchcock references, some supplied by Barlow, some improvised by Bloomquist and company, becomes theatrically infectious and completely overshadows Hannay’s authentic mission to absolve himself and prevent Nazi incursion.

A marriage between farce and gravitas is possible. When Schmidt, for a number of reasons, is brought back to Hannay’s Portland Place flat after an incident Schmidt initiates causes panic in a London music hall, it is clear they are being tailed by a couple of men visible from Hannay’s window.

This is a time to relax humor and let the sinister prevail. The vigilant men do not seem threatening. Hannay can dismiss them and assume control of his and Schmidt’s situation, one that will prove more dire than he estimated.

Suspense in small doses would go a long way in tempering the comic aspects of “The 39 Steps” and bring the audience back to momentary reality before bathing them in McLean and Rashdan’s deft tomfoolery.

It would provide clarity that eludes Bloomquist’s first act.

Familiar with the story, I knew where to look and spot clues. It’s a good thing because while fun abounded, confusion did as well.

The PST stage was so active, perhaps delightfully active, “The 39 Steps’” main thread became too thin and obscured to be readily seen. Hannay was one more cog in a funny but camouflaging comic barrage.

This hiding of a story’s heft behind its comedy has become epidemic. The 2006 success of “The 39 Steps” triggered a series of mysteries, especially those involving Sherlock Holmes, couched in clowning. Some of “The 39 Steps’” offspring barely attempt anything serious or involving.

“The 39 Steps” does. Or can.

Bloomquist and company prove they know that by a second act that gives Barlow’s script more even play, perhaps even tipping the scale toward Hannay’s mission.

Suddenly, a sense of urgency emerges. As Hannay learns more, and Bloomquist puts more focus on plot, the consequences of Hannay failing in his attempt to clear his name and expose a dangerous spy ring take dramatic hold. Texture replaces sporadic nods to a situation that threatens a man’s liberty and a nation’s security.

Luckily, this emphasis on Hannay solving a conundrum and realizing how to share his knowledge with the authorities who want to arrest and hang him comes in time to make Bloomquist’s “The 39 Steps” involving and even exciting.

The worry is whether the audience, which had every reason to get lost or lose interest during

three-fifths of the production, can change gears and pay closer attention once Bloomquist’s production does.

My verdict is it can’t. Which is a shame because the recovery is remarkable.

Jacob Schorsch is a Richard Hannay worth watching even while his character seems to be the production’s second thought.

Schorsch has the burden of keeping “The 39 Steps” on a serious plane while being part of its slapstick. He does so with wit he lends to his character.

Schorsch’s Hannay is always thinking, always aware, always mindful of what is at stake for him and England. While that means having to sort out a ton of information comedy is obscuring, it also means having to fit into and accept situations that involve mental dexterity and the ability to play along to survive.

It also means Hannay makes mistakes along the way, by unknowingly trusting a scoundrel or misinterpreting what appears to be obvious. Schorsch handles these incidents with the intelligence that is Hannay’s core. He visibly acknowledges his error and recovers to move ahead with further investigation and next steps.

Joe McLean and Jordan Rashdan are ready for any music hall.

Individually and together, they are a cornucopia of elemental and shrewd comic devices. I’d have been thrilled if they followed curtain calls with a rendition of Cole Porter’s “Brush Up Your Shakespeare.”

Rashdan obviously loves clowning. His eyes sparkle when one of his thousand characters is most mischievous or comically salacious. He has several breakout moments, the top three being a political committee chairman who speaks inaudibly while introducing a keynote guest, a female Scottish innkeeper whose accent is so strong she is unintelligible to anyone unfamiliar with deep brogue, and Mr. Memory, a music hall performer whose specialty is spewing facts on request. As Mr. Memory, Rashdan brilliantly pulls off something beyond one’s understanding of all an actor can do. In double time, he rattles off the main information that proves

Hannay’s innocence and the Nazi threat to Britain.

I could cite a dozen more examples of Rashdan’s gifts. He’s a comic whirlwind.

Joe McLean also finds freedom in giving humorous sides to nefarious characters. His spoofing helps to throw Hannay and “The 39 Steps” off crucial scents, McLean entertaining even as he is throwing Hannay or England to the Nazi wolves.

Like Rashdan, to whom he can be Laurel or Hardy but always a symbiotic partner, he enjoys his moments in drag. He also is of a size that lends threat to scenes that require it.

Shaelin McKenna’s roles are thankless next to the range her castmates enjoy, but she manages the enigmatic character of Annabella Schmidt and the hauteur of a confidante Hannay meets on a train with skill that demonstrates her versatility.

Jeff Van Velsor designs another perfect set for PST by centering action in a playing space that resembles a small theater while grand walls entirely fill stage left and right. Quick action by “The 39 Steps” cast transforms the compact space into everything from Hannay’s cramped bedsitter to a Scottish inn and posh vestibule.

Costumers Alex Conroy and Didi Vekri have a field day providing McLean and Rashdan layers they can remove or enhance to meet a role while giving Hannay appropriate tweeds and McKenna gowns that are exactly right for whatever woman she’s playing.

Florencia Curchitser is a co-star of the production, creating effects that are frequently comic or intense. Kirk Longhofer is as adept with a panoply of sounds that establish location and cause tension.

“The 39 Steps” runs through Saturday, July 18, at Princeton Summer Theater in the Hamilton Murray Theater on Princeton’s campus, the best entry from Nassau Street being just across from Labyrinth Books. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $35 for evening performances and $30 for matinees. At the crossroads of war and independence

Trenton, Princeton and Mercer County have long commanded much of New Jersey’s Revolutionary War attention. But just beyond those better-known battlefields, Allen’s Town, Upper Freehold and the surrounding Monmouth County countryside formed one of the overlooked crossroads of the American War for Independence.

As the nation continues this month to mark America’s 250th anniversary, U.S. 1 thought it fitting to steal a glimpse through the colonial historical lens and take, if you’ll allow, a bayonet’s stab at exploring the important role that Allen’s Town Village — Allentown Borough, for all of you modernists — played in that struggle for independence.

We must state clearly at the outset, with regard to this historical reflection — this columnist’s tribute to his beloved hometown and her residents — that we are as mere riders on a dark and galloping charge, bound for a fuller understanding of the place Allen’s Town occupied in the making of a nation.

That ride is meant to carry us back to a time of political upheaval, tectonic shifts in economics, trade and cottage industries, astonishing scientific evolution and medical discoveries, and, perhaps most important to our expedition, the audacious introduction of the idea that a person might live freely in the pursuit of his happiness or, at the very least, up to the limits of his inalienable rights and responsibilities as a private citizen, who would not by nature nor by common sense kneel before king nor kaiser.

If anything is to represent the brass ring to be grasped during our midnight journey backward into the illumination of our own history, it is this: the concept of individual liberty, uttered first on this continent by the humanistic philosopher, inventor, writer and revolutionary Thomas Paine, Englishman, founding American father and author of “The American Crisis.”

Most are aware Paine kept a cottage for himself and a small stable for his horse, Buttons, just a few miles south from here in Bordentown, but the unsubstantiated story that he lived on what is now Church Street, in Allen’s Town, with his niece for a time, also lingers — as so much else does in these parts.

We are at full gallop now, thundering back through time, clinging on astride a somehow familiar historical steed, hurtling breakneck, all a-clatter and dashing in and out of the long-dark village alleys and passageways of the old town, past the familiar Old Mill, yes, but is that a second mill standing close by?

A tannery appears across the way where Sensi Park should be. The blur of neon and electric light left behind in our periphery, giving way now to candles flickering behind the rippled glass panes of taverns, cozy, firelit inns and quartermasters’ offices while modern trustworthy pavement falls away under hoof to unevenly worn highways of packed earth and patched brick, and on, and still striding, and still galloping on, over cobblestone, mud, murky streams of brackish water, out into the great pastures and farm-

We are some 10 miles from Trenton, 14 miles from Princeton and 14 miles from Freehold.

In other words: the crossroads of colonial transportation, business and, eventually, the strategic center point of the American Revolution.

So then, with a final leap over wild, tangled blackberry brambles and the snarled underbrush of the deep green of the forested woodlands, ages gone, and finally, now, pausing, panting, now squinting at unknowable LenapeUnami Indian trails, faint, barely traceable, in fact, in the glowering dusk, that break off and lead out across the wildlands of western Jersey and disappear, as they are wont to do, into a million stories, tales and fables, we find ourselves well placed — just as Gen. Sir Henry Clinton would find in his attempt to use this area to outflank Gen. George Washington in his later march to New York.

See here, there are at least two Indian paths we could follow, if we’re careful. But the one fading Indian path we want fades in and out among the tall grass and brush alongside a brisk fresh stream we’ve come to call Doctors Creek, which runs right through the heart of Allen’s Town and, if followed far enough east, would lead us out through untamed forests and eventually to the Pinelands watershed and on out to the bright coastal waters of the Atlantic.

We’ve arrived. Welcome to a spring morning in colonial Allen’s Town.

Doctors Creek, we will find that at least two mills, a fulling mill and a grist mill, are already, with the sun barely at full rise, in full daily operation. These mills, founded

by Nathan Allen years earlier, are the machines at the heart of all sorts of related, necessary industries in town and nearby, and will come to be owned and operated

by Joseph Height, the prosperous Burlington tavern owner of the Stage Coach Tavern in Burlington City.

The prominent family names to be reckoned with at this time included Borden — both father and son — and Rogers.

Although we are most interested in a brief history of colonial Allen’s Town’s prominent role during the hostilities between the Crown and the colonies from 1765 to 1783, it would be difficult to tell that story if we left out what life was like there leading up to the Revolution.

Our challenge is that there is so much more to the story and to the significance of Allentown with regard to the War for Independence than can be included in a short tribute such as this one.

Further, we admit our absolute reliance upon wiser, more expert historians who have done much hard work, digging and corroboration amid the historical fog and the usual expected contrarian counterpoints.

Among these experts, chiefly, is noted Monmouth County historian John Fabiano, who has made it his very life’s work to uncover, vet and verify the rich histories of the establishment of historically accurate local and more widespread colonial history and cul-

tural understanding along with his collaborators Anne Garrison and Alice Wikoff, all residents of the Historic Village of Allentown.

The cultural and historical value of their study, originally published in 2001, cannot be underestimated. In addition to that seminal document, Wikoff is well known for her beloved handdrawn illustrations of the town’s early structures, prominent homes and governmental buildings. These are collected in her book, “A Sketchbook of Historic Allentown.”

After its original establishment in 1706, the village grew to approximately 80 wooden and brick structures, but by the time of our visit, 1756, just as anti-British sentiment is heating up in Allen’s Town, Upper Freehold and Bordentown, the village was the scene of bustling industry.

In addition to the mills, there was a tannery, a pork-processing facility, haberdasheries, millineries, no fewer than three busy inns and three smoky, clattering blacksmiths, general dry-goods shops, bakeries and much more.

As the British became more demanding — even turning citizens out of their own homes in Allen’s Town, Bordentown and elsewhere in 1777 and 1778 — those businesses, including that of a bright, patriotic young Allentown lawyer, David Brearly, would contribute significantly to the cause of liberty from the Crown, according to Fabiano et al.

together controlled travel and trade in the decades before the American War for Independence.

The coming war would bring British soldiers, their now-infamous Hessian mercenaries and loyalists, and the Colonial Army of farmers, schoolteachers and merchants, led by His Excellency Gen. George Washington — late of the French and Indian Wars, where he established both his military prowess and absolute fearless resolve.

But we are also stalking the quarry of Allen’s Town’s place in a new nation’s varied, burgeoning areas of commerce: our perfectly centralized location between New York and Philadelphia, the steadily developing shore towns and the hill country to the north and west, its crucial importance as a breadbasket, and a booming carriage and furniture, equestrian, milling and forge town, complete with wheelwrights, hoopers, brewers and more.

Arguably, however, as the “belt” of the Jerseys, that is the stretch of the Old York Road, or “The Crown Road,” as it was sometimes called, all the way through Allen’s Town and into Bordentown, was a strategic pinch point for both opposing forces, who regularly camped, spied, skirmished and resupplied men and livestock alike at the colonial crossroads.

In addition to Fabiano, Garrison, Wikoff and their contributors, I will, as needed, depend upon other historians, storytellers and amateur researchers as we go along.

Colonial Allentown was a centralized hotbed of a variety of invaluable 18th-century industries that included extensive and varied agricultural contributions, carriage making, furniture manufacturing, blacksmithing, equestrian interests of every stripe, at least one well-regarded doctor and several prominent lawyers, one of whom, Maj. James Imlay, was a signer of the United States Constitution and a member of the United States Congress.

Another was the well-known patriot and legal scholar Col. David Brearly, who, although young at the time, became a United States judge.

Allen’s Town was established in 1706 by Nathan Allen, who built the first mill after purchasing two separate parcels of land from wealthy Scots Quaker Robert Burnett, who first emigrated from England to Perth Amboy in 1690.

Burnett, inexplicably rarely discussed regarding Allentown’s early history, purchased some 4,000 acres east of Doctors Creek. The two parcels that Allen acquired from Burnett consisted of 110 acres on the east side of Doctors Creek. The other large parcel consisted of 528 acres on the north side of Indian Run Creek.

This would enable Allen to set into motion his dream of both a grist and fulling mill. Around that first earnestly planted dream, the small village began to grow.

The prosperous Quaker, Burnett, had two daughters who stayed on in Allen’s Town: Margaret, who married Nathan Allen, and Isabel, who married William Montgomery.

Montgomery, for his part, purchased a large parcel of land in Upper Freehold from his fatherin-law. Later incorporated as a

municipality within Monmouth County from portions of Upper Freehold on Jan. 29, 1889, the village was notable not only for its central proximity between colonial north and south Jerseys, but also for its taverns, inns, mail depots and stagecoach stops between Philadelphia, New York, the coast and the westerly wildlands very near the Delaware Water Gap. This, plainly, was Allen’s Town — the very crossroads of the American Revolution. These are plain facts, well-established and commonly discussed among historically minded residents.

Although the Historic Village of Allentown currently occupies less than a square mile of land, streams, parks and ponds, it is nothing short of astonishing in its contribution, not only to the American Revolution, but to the very founding of our nation.

Alongside such industrious and important neighbors as Upper Freehold Township, Chesterfield — and the Quaker Village of Crosswicks — and Bordentown, a community worthy of volumes in its own right and the traditional home of none other than Thomas Paine, the earlier mentioned British-born philosopher, inventor and radical humanist, often referred to as the father of the American Revolution.

Visitors to nearby Bordentown can visit the Paine monument on the corner of Prince and Courtland streets, a quiet spot offering sweeping views of the Delaware River and only steps away from the River Line station.

According to Fabiano et al., while much of early Upper and Lower Monmouth County was embroiled in open hostilities between factions of Tories — sympathetic to the Crown of King George III — and patriots yearning to establish a new republic, democratically ruled by law, not bloodlines and strategic marriages, Allentown stood out, for better or worse, as a firm, unapologetic bastion of patriotic sentiment and fervor.

Rumors have swirled for centuries that the main carriage stop and inn on the Old York Road, most recently known as DiMattia’s Restaurant, was once a serpent’s den of early Revolutionary spycraft, secret meetings and skulduggery.

Located a mere 10 miles from Trenton and some 14 miles across farmlands to Princeton, Gen. George Washington himself passed through and stayed in Allentown on several occasions.

Both the British and the Colonial armies understood the strategic importance of controlling the narrow belt that the Old York Road represented — a direct run between New York and Philadelphia, as well as a promising point to offer a protective southern flanking guard for both the Second Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Princeton for whichever army controlled it.

It should be noted here that the importance of the study, as an aside to this abbreviated 250th anniversary tribute, such as it is, cannot be overestimated in either its thoroughness of academic research or bounty of sources cited and vetted.

Plainsboro Historic Allentown grew along early transportation routes that connected East and West Jersey and later became strategically important during the Revolution. letters; newspaper accounts; lists of common soldiers, officers and their duties; and even quartermaster’s accounting documents of uniforms, rations, ammunition, and the care and feeding of livestock during encampments in and around Allentown.

Within the comprehensive study, there are even unearthed excerpts from a diary kept by a British defector, Thomas Sullivan, who switched sides to join the Colonial Army in the summer of 1778.

In fact, the British Army’s occupation of certain lands in and immediately around Allentown and Upper Freehold has yielded an ever-deepening understanding and historically evidenced treasure trove of information regarding both Colonial and British troop movements, encampments, strategies, and even everyday life of both soldiery and civilians during this turning point in our nation’s tumultuous birth some 250 years ago.
