AROUND TOWN Restoration efforts begin at Mountain Lakes

Municipal engineer recognized for outstanding public service

T

hanks to generous grants from community-minded organizations and the effort of volunteers, Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS) has embarked on a two-year effort to restore the riparian area — the land that rings the lake shore — within the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Preserve in Princeton.

Dubbed the “Help Restore the Lakeshore” project, volunteers are working with FOPOS’ stewardship staff to identify and remove invasive species around the 25-acre area, including burning bush, privet, and multiflora rose. The invasives will begin to be replaced in the fall by native trees and shrubs, such as viburnums, dogwoods, and oaks.

“Riparian areas play an important role in filtering out pollutants and slowing storm water and runoff before it enters the water system,” notes Anna Corichi, FOPOS’ Director of Natural Resources and Stewardship.” Water that flows through Mountain Lakes Preserve ultimately finds its way into the Raritan River, an important drinking water source for central New Jersey, and also provides critical habitat for plants, birds, insects, and aquatic life.

“We’ve made a big dent in completing Phase I of the restoration, but we can always use more help on a project of this size, from individuals, families, student groups, community and corporate groups,” Corichi continues. “It’s scenic and enjoyable to work by the water. We’ve seen muskrat and beaver swimming about, and you often spot a Great Blue Heron. The Lake Loop Trail is one of the most popular

In addition to managing the multimillion-dollar capital program each year, Stockton leads her department in the review and inspection of land development projects and single-family home applications; oversees the municipal transit system and municipal parking department including a parking deck; oversees the Public Works Department; manages the municipal stormwater permit; and oversees the Sewer Division.

Stockton brings extensive experience to her public service roles. Over her career, she has worked at public agencies in California, the Washington State DOT in Seattle and a water rights and land development consultant in Oregon. She also enjoyed a three-year work sabbatical while living in the Netherlands.

“Deanna’s award is well deserved,” said Municipal Administrator Bernie Hvozdovic. “The broad array of projects she manages day-to-day are difficult and challenging. They range from dam restoration and municipal transit, to storm water and road design. Her dedication, work ethic and institutional knowledge are invaluable to the municipality.

“Her promotion last year to deputy administrator of the Engineering and Infrastructure Operations Department was recognition of the high level of public service she provides and the significant value she brings.”

Stockton has been involved with the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers for more than ten years. She is a member of the NJSPE Mercer Chapter (PESMC), has participated as a continuing education presenter, and served on the PESMC Board in all positions including president in 2017-2018. She is currently the municipal representative to the New

Where’s Waldo scavenger hunt is coming to Princeton

W

here’s Waldo? Throughout July the iconic children’s book character in the red-and-white-striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting Princeton businesses, which are hosting a free scavenger hunt for anyone who wants to search for Waldo. Participants in the Waldo Scavenger Hunt will get prizes and treats while supporting Princeton’s Shop Local Movement.

The kick-off of the Waldo Scavenger Hunt will be Saturday, July 2, at 1 p.m. at jaZams, 25 Palmer Square East. It will feature cake and goodie bags, and Waldo fans are invited to dress as one of their favorite characters from the Waldo books.

The hunt then begins for the miniature Waldos hidden among 25 local retailers.

The goal is to find 25 Waldos and record each find in a special Waldo passport. The Scavenger Hunt ends on July 31, when there will be a live Instagram drawing for prizes for anyone finding 20 Waldos and one grand prize drawing for all those who completed the passport.

The Find Waldo Local, although new to Princeton, is celebrating its 10th anniversary nationally. s a record-hot real estate market shows signs of cooling off, houses in Princeton continue to be listed at eye-popping prices. Here is a look at what’s available at the high and low ends of the market as of June 24, when the Echo went to press.

At the top of the list is 20 Leonard Court, a French Provincial-style manor on a cul-de-sac off of Drakes Corner Road. The six-bedroom, 11-bathroom estate built in 2010 is nearly 12,000 square feet. The 5.28-acre lot also includes a tennis court and pool. The home, which has been on the market since April, is listed by Rena Yang of BHHS Fox & Roach - Princeton. $8,500,000.

Also for sale in the neighborhood is 155 Drakes Corner Road, a seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom, 10,000-square-foot estate on a 19-acre lot. Hollywood classics immortalized on the big screen at the Garden

alk down the Hollywood Boulevard of Princeton once again this summer, as motion picture actors with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame return weekly to the silver screens, celebrating the titles that turned their famous legacies golden.

The Princeton Garden Theatre on Nassau Street has been a community arthouse theater and “museum of the cinematic experience” keeping film history alive for more than a century, executive director Chris Collier says. Part of that mission is seen through their flagship series Hollywood Summer Nights, which is planned throughout the season to showcase movies that vary in genre, era and subject matter, but remain timeless classics.

Since 2014, Princeton Garden Theatre has been managed by Renew Theaters, a nonprofit company that preserves and maintains smaller, yet significant, venues.

Their robust membership program helps to keep these iconic structures in operation as snapshots in time, just with modern support.

“All through the year, we try to show a variety of repertory films, international arthouse classics, new restorations, and all sorts of different films. But over the summer, we’ve found Classic Hollywood is the right fit, and that it allows an opportunity for families to come beat the heat and do something fun. There are a lot of films that I feel people have grown up with or seen only on the small screen, or they want their kids to see, or they want to see again.

This summer is a perfect time for that,” said Collier, who has been with Renew Theaters for about 15 years.

All of the movies are planned with one showtime, typically at 7 p.m., in accordance with distribution requirements, as well as to allow for PGT’s main attractions to equally shine. If a film sells out due to its popularity, as with “The Godfather,” encore screenings can be added.

“The funny thing is, there are a couple of core titles like ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Casablanca’ and ‘Jaws’ that we know that when we put those out, people will absolutely flock to those,” he said. “The more we do this, I think the less we know how things are going to turn out.”

“A single date gives it that sense of uniqueness and makes it special,” Collier said. “The movie theater experience is very different from the streaming experience, where at home, you can watch 15 minutes of a movie and turn it off, or pick it up in three weeks. Part of the joy of this series is we don’t know when these movies are going to come around again — so this is the chance to catch it, and that often drives a larger audience, making the experience even more enjoyable.”

The ideas hail from their patrons and staff, who balance the classic films with lesser-known hidden gems. Each summer, PGT rotates through the works of acclaimed directors like Alfred Hitchcock (“Dial M for Murder”) and looks out for digital restorations.

“We want a variety of films from all different time periods that really showcase the whole gamut of classic Hollywood cinema,” Collier continued. The lineup for

this summer includes categories like noir, drama, documentary, musical, comedy, action, and more. Once they check most of the boxes in style and year of origin, PGT plans “secret” complementary pairings that are up to the patrons to figure out the thematic similarities, actors, or references.

For example, June’s showings of “My Man Godfrey” and “The Godfather” composed their “The Gods” week due to the names. Double billed and both with terrazzo-brass Hollywood Walk of Fame stars, 1932 Princeton alumnus Jimmy Stewart and Humphrey Bogart were scheduled with at least two movies of their own — Bogart welcomed in the Hollywood Summer Nights series with “The Maltese Falcon” and “Sabrina,” while Stewart is in “After the Thin Man” and “Harvey.”

Collier said he is happy to show a longawaited restoration of “The Shop Around the Corner” on July 21, which Stewart also stars in, to pay homage to the actor’s local relevance. Stewart’s leading role in Harvey is also presented in contrast with a smaller one in “After the Thin Man.” Some connections are clearer, while others are hidden in layers of subtle, cinematic camouflage.

“Angels with Dirty Faces” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” are “a secret nod to that ’80s, early ’90s nostalgia,” because the former is watched and quoted by Macaulay Culkin’s character, Kevin McCallister, in “Home Alone.” Collier acknowledged that many of the lines will surely be recognized by aficionados of the Christmas classic.

While PGT usually observes a policy that does not allow people six years and younger into the screenings for the Hollywood Summer Nights, Collier explained that all prices are reduced for students this summer.

“If you go to a commercial Multiplex, it can end up costing over $100 for four tickets,” he said. “We want it to be a reasonably priced, fun way that a family can go out and enjoy. We find a lot of the titles may not always appeal to ages six and under, and part of that is just we didn’t want a family bringing, say, a two-year-old who would be very distracted and interrupt the movie for others. But if there’s a kid who is a movie enthusiast who wants to come see one of the films, we can always make sure that those budding cinephiles are well-helped.”

Park and meet at the lot by the Mercer Meadows Dog Park and Rosedale Lake area Mercer Meadows is expansive, home to 1,600 acres and three county properties — the Pole Farm, Rosedale Lake, and Curlis Lake Woods — with a wealth of wildlife, woods, and gentle winds weaving through the area. The Lawrence Hopewell Trail traverses two townships and covers more than 20 miles. While pedestrians and cyclists are free to navigate the area during the day, the latter can show up for an event of the celestial kind on Saturday, July 9, for a nighttime, six-mile route guided by the glow of the full moon.

The 2022 Full Moon Bike Ride takes advantage of this natural illumination, creating what organizers describe on their website as an “out of this world experience” for riders. When the moon rises around 8:30 p.m., those 12 and older will embark on a brightly decorated route that takes about 45 minutes, all while classical musicians provide accompaniment along the route.

Friday, July 1, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Free As simple as can be, this exploration of another part of Mercer Meadows is a nofrills, no-theme hike that starts at the lot outside the Reed Bryan Farm. A trained naturalist will lead this journey without any set sights or stops, but all spontaneity, as the morning progresses.

According to the Mercer County Park Commission, “brief pauses” may be taken to admire the views, wildlife, and environment. Water bottles and durable footwear are suggested.

The Abbott Marshlands are named after Trenton-born archaeologist and naturalist Charles Conrad Abbott, who documented his experiences living near the marshlands and discovering artifacts. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the more than 3,000 acres of wetlands and bluffs run “adjacent to the Delaware River between Trenton and Bordentown,” according to their website.

Non-riders do not have to pay a fee, but donations are requested, as the nonprofit that creates, manages and maintains the trail, the Lawrence Hopewell Trail Corporation, is organizing the event. All guests must still sign a waiver.

LHT requests that all riders wear helmets and have working front lights on their bikes. Decorating the bikes with extras, such as the free glowsticks provided, is highly encouraged. Prizes will be awarded to winners in youth and adult categories for their creativity.

There will be restrooms available, as well as “a few vendors selling snacks and drinks,” but LHT advocates for bringing along snacks and/or having a moonlit picnic dinner beforehand. No alcohol is permitted, there are no current COVID-19 protocols in place, and the rain date is the following day on Sunday, July 10.

Additionally, LHT’s Saturday Morning Walking Club typically hosts a free monthly event exploring the area. However, because of the Full Moon Bike Ride in July, the Saturday Morning Walks will resume on August 13. The location of the August event is, as of press time, to be determined. Named “Land of the Turtle” to honor the animal’s symbolic relationship with the native Lenape, the Tulpehaking Nature Center facility offers a host of educational opportunities for visitors. It’s also a fitting place to start walking from to engage in the different activities that the Abbott Marshlands has scheduled for July.

On the first Saturday of every month, the Friends for the Abbott Marshlands, the nonprofit that uplifts the area through programming and protective measures, hosts wellness walks on different trails. This month’s walk, co-sponsored by the RWJ Fitness and Wellness Center, invites attendees able to bask in an “early summer walk” among others.

The group will go on the Abbott Bluff Trail through Watson Woods, a path that requires a climb to the top of the bluff, then a descent to a depression in the ground where Abbott’s home was destroyed in a 1914 fire, according to the Marshlands’ website.

Nature Therapy Walk: A Shinrin-yoku Experience with Sharon Lohse Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, 1635 River Road, New Hope, Pennsylvania. Friday, July 8, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. $35 admission ($28 with member discount).

Stewardship is a core mission of Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, where habitats like meadows, woods, and ponds have been flourishing since the 1930s.

BHWP claims to be “the nation’s one-andonly living museum specifically devoted to native plants,” making for a tranquil trip to see what’s in bloom this July —butterfly weed, false sunflowers and sweet pepperbush, to name a few — surrounded by a 100-acre deer exclosure to keep the species

intact.

Since retiring from her position as a psychiatric nurse, Sharon Lohse has continued to develop unique specializations that unify her lifelong passion for nature and the endless desire to help others. With certifications in forest and horticultural therapy, she is a garden trail guide whose background, as well as later pursuits of science at Delaware Valley University, influenced the core elements of this upcoming BHWP event.

According to a 2019 National Geographic article, Shinrin-yoku is a Japanese term that translates to “forest bathing,” a form of ecotherapy focused on atmospheric immersion and its corresponding health benefits. This idea of mediating outdoors has inspired Lohse’s nature therapy walk, as the BHWP page continues, where attendees “will explore the land of the preserve and awaken [their] senses to its sounds, beings, textures and beauty.”

These gentle strides, at a considerably slower rate, are meant to truly absorb the perks of reflection, whether against a sunlit pond or looking inwards. The “emphasis is on unplugging,” BHWP says, to eliminate stress and increase prosperity.

TravelStorys Mobile Tours

Available from the D&R Greenway Land Trust for Cedar Ridge Preserve, Healing Trails, Abbott Marshlands, and St. Michaels Farm Preserve.

Since their inception in 1989, D&R Greenway Land Trust has preserved more than 20,000 acres of land in New Jersey. This has allowed nature, conservation efforts, and green open spaces to flourish — despite time and time again being named the most densely populated state in the entire country. While D&R has no events planned at the moment, anyone can go alone or with company on their TravelStorys mobile tours, which use a free application and GPS to access audio guides.

There are four D&R sites currently adopting the TravelStorys platform as a location-based podcast to share local stories and history lessons.

Listeners can appreciate the paths at their own pace, enjoying time on protected properties by following along to the prerecorded voices. After downloading the guide, the application functions “more like a compass” and works offline, meaning that the insight travels with the user as it recognizes each location in the tour.

International figures like climate change activist Greta Thunburg are included, as well as local leaders including Beverly Mills and Elaine Buck, the founders of the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum who worked to preserve not only the physical area, but the personal accounts and cultural significance of Black history in the Sourlands.

The Healing Trails are a tour through Princeton’s Greenway Meadows, divided by three colors of varying accessibilities and difficulties, that are meant to help with personal health. Being surrounded by nature physically and emotionally benefits people of all ages, soothing ailments, issues, as well as a myriad of conditions that were dealt with right on that same trail.

D&R’s website says that the tour, inspired by the Healing Trails art exhibition in their Johnson Education Center venue, revolves around the “stories of people healing from surgery, illness or trauma by walking on [their] preserved lands.”

Trails marked as green are handicap accessible and paved, yellow are “relatively flat” and unpaved, while red trails are “more challenging” and uphill. D&R hopes that those soaking up the restorative qual-

ity of lush greens and a warm sun will “find peace and perspective” as they progress.

The Healing Trails were created in memory of Edie Howard.

St. Michaels Farm Preserve’s mobile tour is through an abundance of open space at the edge of Hopewell Borough, where an old orphanage and farm stood before the land was purchased for preservation in 2010.

The trail invites young audiences to learn about nature, the website continues, through exploration and expression. By giving them the tools to find a “home in nature,” the audio informs children about how outdoor experiences can create special connections to the world.

The trail is a tribute to this, and now encompasses a memorial area called “Jackson’s Place,” established on Earth Day last year to remember Jackson McGrath Place, a young man whose ve for the environment will positively inspire visitors for years to come.

After lunch they choose four afternoon elective in any area. 2022 afternoon offerings include children’s theatre, “Who’s line is it anyhow?”, painting, drawing, jazz dance, musical theatre, children’s theater, a cappella singing, hip hop, vocal ensemble, comedy, music video and web video.

For those advanced students

grades 8-12, there are Master Classes in Acting where they will learn about show business, develop their audition skills, and work with others on advanced scenes.

Each session is three weeks in length, Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. with Before and After Camp available. Session I is for those entering grades 4-7 in the fall and runs from July 5-21.

Session II is for grades 8-12 and runs July 25-August 11. There are 2

sessions also of the advance Master Class in Acting solely for grades 8-12 with Session I running July 5-22 and Session II from July 25- August 12. All sessions culminate in a Festival performance and Art Display at Kelsey Theatre. Master Class culminates in its own showcase.

Blend Bar & Bistro’s Central Jersey Beer Fest Returns Blend Bar and Bistro opened its doors in Hamilton in October of 2012 and created an anniversary event that has grown into a tasting extravaganza, the Central Jersey Beer Fest. 2022 marks Blend’s 10-year anniversary, and Blend will be hosting smaller events at their restaurant location practically weekly all summer leading up to Saturday, October 8, Central Jersey Beer Fest at Mercer County Park Festival Grounds in West Windsor.

Antonio Carannante, festival coordinator and co-owner of Blend Bar and Bistro in Hamilton, is justifiably pumped.

In the past #CJBeerFest featured a tasting of more than 150 craft beers, some wines, even a few spirits, up to 10 food trucks, live bands, and a variety of other vendors, including axe throwing. The festival has attracted an average of 3,000+ festival lovers. Folks come for all over the Mercer County area, but even groups of family and friends from Philadelphia, Rhode Island, Connecticut, the Carolinas, California, New York, and more have made the trip to the Central Jersey Beer Fest.

Whether you are seeking support and camaraderie, trying to slim down, or searching for stress relief, the community education offerings provided by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Hamilton will help you make informed decisions about your health, wellness, and fitness. Each month, community members participate in more than 75 RWJUH Hamilton health and wellness programs, 11 support groups, and many health screenings.

Most of these programs are free or low-cost.

Programs cater to a wide range of interests and ages, from young children to older adults. “Through surveys and research, we determine the top health needs of the surrounding communities and then design programs to address them,” says Diane Grillo, vice president, health promotion at RWJUH Hamilton. A Medical Advisory Panel composed of 28 board-certified

physicians advises on program development to maximize the benefit to attendees. Most classes are held at the RWJ Fitness & Wellness Center - Hamilton, located at 3100 Quakerbridge Road, Mercerville.

Information and Education. The Mini-Medical School program is one of the many educational offerings available to the public through RWJUH Hamilton. This program is aimed at those who have an interest in healthcare as a career or just want a deeper understanding of human anatomy. RWJUH Hamilton physicians teach this eight-week course, focusing on a new element of healthcare and the body each week.

Holistic Health. RWJUH Hamilton’s holistic program focuses on non-medical wellness techniques, such as meditation, aromatherapy, and Reiki, which is a practice that promotes healing by improving energy flow around the body. in July of 2014, “showing independent, foreign, and classic films for local movie lovers” ever since.

Renew Theaters owns three other movie theaters, all in Pennsylvania — the Ambler Theater in Ambler, where Collier himself started as a manager, the County Theater in Doylestown, and the Hiway Theater in Jenkintown. John Toner, the founding director, came up with the idea for Hollywood Summer Nights back in 1993 as he operated the County Theater.

Back then, as Collier explained, the County Theater was home to the film society Closely Watched Films, whose love for “classic art house and Hollywood films” resulted in the Doylestown cinema showing movies that otherwise flew under the radar.

As a staple of their programming, Princeton Garden Theatre’s Hollywood Summer Nights continues these values and traditions, becoming what Collier said is the most popular of their special events, sometimes even surpassing the successes of new releases.

“For a number of patrons, that’s what makes the Garden special. You can only see movies like that in our theater, you can’t see it at the commercial multiplex down the street, or even other independent theaters, so that’s one of the things that really sets the Garden apart,” he said.

“People were really eager to come back and participate in them.”

Right before the pandemic, PGT was planning a combination of its special, spring and fall programming for its 100th anniversary, aiming to show 100 different films — one movie for each year the Garden was opened. But it was canceled, and none of those films were ever shown in person. Instead, the digital movies they could offer were “new releases by independent distributors” due to the streaming arrangements of the anniversary selections.

This is why, after PGT reopened in June of 2021 following 15 months of closure, every movie featured, especially for Hollywood Summer Nights, has been a celebration of its own.

In a joint project between Renew Theaters and Gettysburg’s Majestic Theater, several films are the subject of a series titled “Deep Focus,” where guest speakers host an online seminar and discussion based around the movie. Once a feature is chosen, patrons can watch the movie either at a PGT showing prior to the date of the Zoom session, or on a streaming service, to prepare.

Having already formed their perspectives from seeing the film in its entirety, participants can dive right into the “meat and potatoes,” as Collier said, ready to speak on the content or themes, as well as anything they deem fitting for a community dialogue.

“What we noticed right away was that we actually had better attendance and better engagement in those virtual events,” he explained, with the physical logistics of finding parking, seats, bathroom breaks, and babysitters able to tire a person out before any discussion commences. “We found that people are more invested in the discussion when that is the focus, and they’ve actually had time to watch the film and digest it, do some research, and come up with questions. It’s made for really wonderful conversations.”

With the world at their keyboard, speakers from all over have been able to lead these sessions as well, giving it a level of access that “sets the series apart” from the usual events at the Garden Theatre, according to Collier.

“We’ll eventually get back to in-person, but I don’t think we’re going to leave the virtual realm either. There’s definitely something added there that we’re going to keep exploring, using some of the tools that we had to learn during the pandemic, and continuing to make those successful for us,” he noted.

Just as the Garden Theatre first opened in 1920 with a silent film, on Wednesday, August 10, they are unveiling a 1923 silent costume epic restored by the Eye Filmmuseum and Milestone Films. Co-founded

by Amy Heller and Dennis Doros, Milestone Films is an independent distribution and restoration company based in Harrington Park.

“The Spanish Dancer” follows a Romani performer who “becomes entangled with King Philip and Queen Isabel of Spain when her lover is arrested for defying the laws against dueling,” according to the

Princeton Garden Theatre website.

With a new score from Bill Ware, a famous jazz vibraphonist and composer, the film has only been shown on rare occasions before the upcoming screening. Its corresponding seminar on Tuesday, August 23, at 7:30 p.m. is led by Heller and Doros.

Other Deep Focus selections for PGT are headed by writer Hannah Jack of Turner Movie Classics, whose Hollywood Classics include showings of the 1944 version of “Double Indemnity” on Thursday, July 7, and the 1950 version of “Born Yesterday” on Thursday, August 11.

“Double Indemnity” is described by Deep Focus as “the gold standard for film noir,” featuring an infatuated insurance salesman and a scheming femme fatale who, together, commit murder and fraud based on a double indemnity clause in the accident policy of the woman’s husband.

The seminar is on Tuesday, July 19, at 7:30 p.m.

“Born Yesterday” is a comedic drama, political satire, and unconventional romance all in one, where a “crooked businessman” wants his girlfriend to have better manners so he can marry her — only to invoke spousal privilege, a common law term meaning she could not testify against him in court. The tycoon then hires a journalist to instruct her in the ways of etiquette, but being polite is the least of their problems when the tutor and underestimated pupil fall in love. The seminar is on Tuesday, August 16, at 7:30 p.m.

These older titles, as Collier said, might be overlooked or skipped entirely if seen while scrolling on Netflix or another streaming service, but “if it’s on the big screen or in our catalog, you know that we vouch for it, that it’s been

vetted, it’s been curated, and that often is a chance that people will take to come try something different, or see a movie that they haven’t seen,” he continued. “A lot of times they’re pleasantly surprised by the experience they have.”

“While it is easy to watch movies at home, there is a lot lost when you watch a movie on the couch,” Collier continued, noting that comedies in particular benefit from an audience. “A lot of these films that people know by heart and have seen many times before, maybe you have seen on the TV at home, are completely different and revelatory when you see it. On the big screen, you can take in all of the details the way it was meant to be seen, and with an audience. It really changes the viewing experience, and that’s one aspect of it. The other is these movies were meant to be seen on a big screen. They were meant to be shown in that format; we want to give people the opportunity to engage with them the way they were meant to be seen.”

“We hope that people continue to come out to the theater, and we can continue to offer that cinematic experience,” Collier said, adding that as theatrical and streaming continue their ongoing battle, PGT will act accordingly — but never lose its signature touch.

“We plan on being here for another 100 years, continuing the same type of programming, keeping people engaged and seeing movies on the big screen,” he said.
