Old Barracks Museum to host first ever Founders Day The Old Barracks Museum is set to host its first ever Trenton Barracks Founders Day on June 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This family-friendly event promises a day filled with fun and entertainment for the entire community. Guests can enjoy a bubble show (11 AM and 1 PM), face painting, balloon animals, and food trucks, including Gita’s Mobile Cafe, Memos Foodtruck, and Rainbow Snow.⁠ There will also be a rousing musical performance by the Blawenburg Band from 2 to 3 PM, entitled “Listening to the Revolution: 250 Years of American Music.”

The New Jersey State Museum and the 1719 William Trent House Museum will also be on-site, providing information and hosting activities throughout the day. The Trent House will host an exhibit and a game based on the theme “Trenton Eyewitness to Revolution.” The New Jersey State Museum will have informational materials for the museum’s programs and exhibits celebrating New Jersey’s and the United States’ 250th anniversary. They will also have an interactive button-making craft inspired by their brand-new exhibition, “Spirit of ‘76: The Bicentennial.”

In 1902, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames organized the Old Barracks Association and purchased the building.

The site became a museum in 1903 and continues to welcome guests from across the globe. Trenton Barracks Founders Day will celebrate the unique history of one of the nation’s last freestanding colonial barracks while honoring the women who fought to preserve the site.

The event will be free due to support from sponsor Hunter Research. *** The Old Barracks is also making plans to celebrate Independence Day and America’s 250th anniversary with a grand reopening. The museum will welcome guests back to the museum and unveil the results of its yearlong restoration.

The official opening is scheduled for 10 a.m., when the museum will welcome local officials to help swing open the gates.

Visitors will be invited to preview three new exhibits that highlight the site’s, as well as New Jersey’s, role in American history.

The museum will also be displaying, for the first time in decades, George Washington’s Inaugural Flower Arch, the original historic arch that he passed un-

der during his inaugural march through Trenton. The celebration will include a recreation of the arch, covered with hand-dyed wood flowers, each representing a donor. A group photo will be taken with the donors at 11 a.m.

The vocal duo Liberty Tree (Stacy Roth and Bob Dupre) will sing “Welcome Mighty Chief,” an ode written by Major Richard Howell to the tune of Handel’s “See the Conquering Hero Comes,” at 10:30 a.m.

Mill Hill to host 35th annual Garden Tour Through gardens, historic landmarks, and a citywide shuttle featuring narration

by George Washington himself, the Old Mill Hill Society’s 35th Annual Garden Tour invites visitors to step directly into the story of America’s founding.

Taking place from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, this year’s tour expands beyond its celebrated tradition of showcasing private gardens. In recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary, “Seeds of Liberty: A Moving History Experience” reimagines the garden tour as an immersive, citywide journey that connects Trenton’s past to its present through movement, storytelling, and place.

“This year’s tour is about more than opening our gardens; it’s about opening the city itself,” says Terry West, OMHS Garden Tour chair. “Seeds of Liberty invites people to move through Trenton as history unfolded; across neighborhoods, landmarks, and stories that continue to shape who we are today.”

The program extends beyond the neighborhood itself, linking visitors to a network of historic sites that together illuminate Trenton’s pivotal role in the American narrative. Artworks Trenton, the Mercer Cemetery, the 1719 William Trent House and the Old Barracks Museum will all be part of the day’s festivities.

At the center of the experience will a continuous shuttle loop doubling as a guided tour narrated by George Washington. The shuttle connects aHl five of the main locations on the tour. historical interpreter Bill Agress will portray Washington.

Drawing from letters, military accounts, and personal reflections, Wash-

ington will speak directly to passengers, offering urgency, strategy and human perspective to the events that unfolded in Trenton during the American Revolution.

Intended to complementing the journey is a commemorative Seeds of Liberty Passport, a printed booklet intended to serve as a guide for visitors through the day. Guests can collect stamps at each location, marking their movement through Trenton.

In addition, there will be both fireworks and a drone show. Firework displays are held Tuesday, June 23 and Saturday, June 27. The drone show will be held Thursday, June 25. The carnival is also known for its robust 50/50.

The Princeton Festival

The Princeton Symphony Orchestra’s Princeton Festival runs from June 5 to June 21, with a lineup of performances set underneath a tented pavilion installed on the grounds of Morven Museum & Garden, 55 Stockton Street, Princeton (unless otherwise noted).

The 2026 festival kicks off with Broadway star Sierra Boggess, who has starred in the musicals “The Little Mermaid,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “School of Rock.” She will perform renditions of Broadway classics and her favorite melodies, accompanied by piano.

The state festival returns to the Mercer County Festival Grounds in West Windsor this year from June 26 through July 5. The festival will include carnival rides, food and craft vendors and games.

Alongside nightly live music, there will be firework displays and a drone show.

Firework displays are held on Friday, June 26 and Monday, June 29. The drone show will be held on Saturday, July 4.

Dear Valued Customer and Resident: Public confidence in drinking water systems is essential to the health and stability of any community. That confidence, however, should be informed by scientific evidence, regulatory context, and a clear understanding of how complex public water utilities operate—not by narratives that risk oversimplifying highly technical operational realities.

Recent reporting concerning Trenton Water Works’ Pennington Avenue Reservoir, one of several open-finished reservoirs in New Jersey, raises legitimate public questions about infrastructure management and water quality oversight. Those questions deserve thoughtful, fact-based discussion.

Trenton Water Works is a large regional public water system serving approximately 217,000 residents across five municipalities—Trenton, Hamilton Township, Ewing Township, Lawrence Township, and Hopewell Township—through more than 63,000 metered connections and hundreds of miles of distribution pipes. Managing a system of this scale requires continuous operational oversight, regulatory coordination, laboratory analysis, and capital investment. TWW is executing all of these critical obligations.

Central to the present discussion is the Pennington Avenue Reservoir, an open finished-water storage asset that has been in service since 1899. By modern utility standards, open finished-water reservoirs present recognized operational and regulatory challenges. These are not unique to Trenton Water Works. Across the United States, public water systems have increasingly transitioned away from open storage basins in favor of enclosed storage systems that offer greater operational control and public health protection. We are doing just that.

It is equally important to establish what Trenton Water Works is doing now—not merely what it plans to do in the future.

Trenton Water Works is currently monitoring both the Pennington Avenue Reservoir and its Central Pumping Station in accordance with a monitoring plan approved by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) in 2023.

These facilities have been subject to regular monitoring under multiple NJDEP-approved frameworks, reflecting an ongoing coordinated approach to water management.

On March 4, 2026, the NJDEP requested that Trenton Water Works update its Reservoir Management Plan to include additional monitoring parameters and enhancements, with submission required within 120 days. That directive should be understood in the proper regulatory context. State environmental regulators routinely refine monitoring expectations and require utilities to expand protocols as operational knowledge evolves. Such directives are part of the ordinary functioning of environmental oversight—not, in and of themselves, evidence of unsafe drinking water.

Trenton Water Works is actively responding to that directive by updating its monitoring plan and sampling procedures, while coordinating with multiple analytical laboratories to ensure the revised monitoring framework fully satisfies the newly imposed requirements. Upon approval by the NJDEP, the updated Reservoir Management Plan will be implemented immediately. It is important to emphasize that Trenton Water Works is not in violation of any reporting or analytical requirements and is working collaboratively with the NJDEP to ensure continued compliance with the enhanced regulatory standards going forward.



Operationally, Trenton Water Works employs multiple treatment barriers to protect public health. Water leaving the Pennington Avenue Reservoir receives additional treatment at the reservoir gatehouse with sodium hypochlorite, providing an additional layer of disinfection before water enters the distribution system. Importantly, the water utility’s disinfectant residual levels continue to exceed state-required minimum thresholds, an essential measure of microbiological protection in public drinking water systems.

Additionally, water leaving the Central Pumping Station is treated with zinc orthophosphate as part of the utility’s corrosion control program. This treatment is specifically intended to reduce corrosion in the distribution system and mitigate lead release from older plumbing infrastructure—a critical public health safeguard in water systems.

Trenton Water Works has also acknowledged the long-term infrastructure realities associated with the Pennington Avenue Reservoir through its ten-year capital improvement plan. The utility’s approximately $763 million modernization strategy includes the phased replacement of the reservoir with a decentralized network of water storage tanks distributed throughout the service area, along with associated improvements to pumping and distribution infrastructure. This approach reflects established contemporary utility planning principles designed to reduce operational risk, improve hydraulic flexibility, strengthen water quality management, and increase system resiliency.

Equally important is the role of regulatory oversight. Public water systems operate under a framework of continuous state and federal regulation designed to identify operational vulnerabilities, require corrective action, and ensure ongoing compliance with drinking water standards. The presence of regulatory directives, expanded oversight, or additional monitoring requirements should be understood within that framework.

That said, regulatory directives must be taken seriously, and implementation matters. Public confidence depends not only on the existence of plans but on timely execution, transparent communication, and demonstrable accountability. Utilities must be prepared to explain how monitoring programs are structured, how operational decisions are made, and how identified deficiencies are being addressed.

This is particularly important because drinking water infrastructure is both technically complex and highly consequential.

Discussions about water quality can quickly generate understandable public concern, making precision in public communication especially important. Alarm without context can erode trust; reassurance without evidence can do the same.

The broader reality is that Trenton Water Works is engaged in the difficult but necessary work of managing its infrastructure while undertaking major system modernization under heightened regulatory scrutiny. That is neither unusual in the public utility sector nor inherently indicative of institutional failure. It is, rather, the kind of challenge many aging American utilities now face.

The public deserves clear, factual, and technically grounded communication about that process.

A productive conversation about Trenton Water Works should therefore focus not on rhetoric, but on measurable outcomes: water quality performance, regulatory compliance, infrastructure investment, implementation timelines, and operational transparency.

That is where public trust is earned, and Trenton Water Works is actively advancing that essential objective.
