Spring surge keeps pest control businesses busy By JOe eMansKi Spring is in the air, and you know what that means: critters on the ground. Crawling across the kitchen floor, scuttling under the porch, and/or scuttling about in the attic. Spring is a great time of year for nice weather, and also for pest control professionals like Mario Carbone. Or at least, spring keeps Mario and his team, which includes wife Antoinette, busy. April and May are the busiest time of the year, Carbone says, and that probably comes as little surprise to homeowners. Carbone started Hamilton-based Mario’s Pest Control in 2017. Before that, he spent more than 20 years in the pest control business. Carbone offers services ranging from insect control to rodent control to avian flu cleanup. He says he’s been in the business long enough to know what some of his competitors try to get away with when offering their services — and he uses that knowledge to set himself apart. “I worked for a big company before I started my business. I saw the mistakes they were making,” he says. “We’re here to do things the correct way.” In terms of insect control, Mario’s Pest Control offers
both emergency services and maintenance programs. Maintenance programs range from 30 to 90 days and come with the added advantage of including emergency services in the subscription. The maintenance programs also include exterior maintenance treatments. During an initial consultation, Carbone and his team will assess both the inside and outside of a client’s home to develop a comprehensive plan. Over the term of a subscription, Mario’s Pest Control will provide ongoing maintenance as needed, sometimes needing only access to the exterior of a home to get the job done. While the basic home maintenance plans are popular, Carbone says, the company also offers a “traditional” and a “total” plan that provides coverage for additional household pests. Which level a customer chooses might depend on the type of infestation that customer has or is concerned about. The traditional plan goes beyond insect control to provide mice, rats and wasps, while the total plan includes treatments for wood-destroying and pantry pests.
