Bordentown History

Quakers and cannonballs Quakers in Burlington and the American Revolution By Charles Bruder In 1660, in a Declaration to King Charles II, English Quakers wrote: “Our principle is, and our practices have always been, to seek peace...and doing that which tends to the peace of all. All bloody principles and practices we do utterly deny, with all outward wars...for any end, or under any pretense whatsoever and this is our testimony to the whole world.” One hundred and fifteen years after that declaration, countless descendants of those English Quakers, who had settled in Burlington County, found themselves and that peace testimony caught in the devastating crossfire of the American Revolution. Not long after the first shot was fired in Lexington, cannonballs began to fly across farmland and pastures in Burlington County, and its resident Quakers, members of the protestant faith known as The Religious Society of See QUAKERS, Page 18

David S. Tylutki, of Bordentown, has completed the final requirement for becoming an Eagle Scout of Troop 13, of Burlington County. Eagle is the highest rank in Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America). Tylutki’s final project was transforming an overgrown plot of weeds into a Peace Garden for St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Bordentown, where Tylutki worships and has spent time as an altar server. Tylutki’s long commitment to scouting is based on his desire to build his character, citizenship, and moral leadership through his duty to God, country, and community, says his mother, Heather Goldenbaum, who recalls when St. Mary’s was a complex of church, Catholic School, and a convent that housed nuns. Although only the church now remains, three religious statues—of the Blessed Mother, St. Bernadette of Lourdes, and a Celtic Cross—formerly associated with the convent, long remained outside the church, See EAGLE, Page 8
