n an update to the community at the June 24 Council meeting Mayor Liz Lempert noted that the community response to the “exclusive pedestrian phase” trial at the intersection of Washington Road, Nassau Street, and Vandeventer Avenue had been overwhelmingly positive. The trial, which was supposed to run for 10 days in June, was still running as of press time.

Lempert was hopeful that the state would make that a permanent change in addition to installing a similar signal at the intersection of Nassau and Witherspoon streets.

But while relief is in sight for one traffic concern, the permanent closure of Terhune Road between Mt. Lucas Road and Route 206 has caused new traffic problems. The closure, necessitated by the new Princeton First Aid & Rescue Squad headquarters being constructed on an adjacent lot, has led the municipality to consider changes at the intersection of Cherry Hill Road and Route 206.

The town’s efforts are hindered because the state has jurisdiction over Route 206. Municipal engineer Deanna Stockton said that the municipality had

hoped to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Route 206 and Valley Road — replacing the left-hand turn onto Route 206 South that was lost when Terhune closed — but there are numerous impediments to that plan owing to state DOT regulations and the geography of the site.

Representatives of Lawrence-based consulting firm WSP, at a work session at the July 8 Council meeting, proposed adding designated left turn lanes for cars turning off of Cherry Hill Road and changing the signal timing to allow more time for cars on Cherry Hill to get through the intersection. Stockton said she hoped a proposal for such alterations could be submitted to the DOT prior to the start of the school year.

It is a special thing to have a community TV station staffed with people so knowledgeable, eager, and passionate about sharing local stories with their friends and neighbors. I feel strongly that PCTV is a blessing, and I hope my fellow Princetonians will take some time to come visit the station and see what we have to offer.

Capital Health at Deborah – Emergency Services Satellite Emergency Department Launches at Deborah Heart and Lung Center As of 12 a.m. on July 1, Capital Health assumed operation of the satellite emergency department (SED) located on the Browns Mills campus of Deborah Heart and Lung Center, an 89-bed teaching hospital that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired heart, lung, and vascular diseases in adults, as well as providing outpatient cardiology services for children. Deborah is Burlington County’s only fully licensed cardiac center.

The newly named SED, Capital Health at Deborah – Emergency Services, is licensed by the New Jersey State Department of Health and fills the vacancy left by Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County after Lourdes’ planned termination of services on June 30, 2019. The 10,000 square foot SED operates 24 hours a day and features 11 exam/treatment rooms, triage bay, cardiac resuscitation room, specialized treatment areas (including OB/ GYN and isolation/decontamination), support services such as lab and radiology, a comfortable waiting area, and ample parking at an easy to drive to location.

“First and foremost, we could not have found a better partner to operate the SED,” he added. “Capital Health’s experience makes them ideal to assume the emergency department operations management. For the past ten years, patients have come to expect a high level of service and care. We are pleased that they will continue to receive this high level of medical care under a seamless transition. Capital Health Regional Medical Center Earns NATIONAL RECOGNITION for Comprehensive Stroke Care Capital Health Regional Medical Center (RMC) has received the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. RMC earned the Get With The Guidelines® Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period.

These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

After Greenland and his son-in-law Daniel Brinson both died within a year, the property went to Brinson’s 10-year-old son, Barefoot, in care of Barefoot’s mother and Greenland’s daughter, Frances. Barefoot was named for Greenland’s equally disruptive close friend from Massachusetts, who at one time helped Greenland escape prison after a fight. Barefoot Brinson grew up to be Sheriff of Somerset and Middlesex counties and lived here until his death. In 1797 Major John Gulick purchased the property and started his own farm.

“Around 1684, Daniel Brinson built Princeton’s second European dwelling, which is still incorporated in the house [here today]. Shortly after, Brinson married Frances Greenland, the daughter of Princeton’s first European settlers, Henry and Mary Greenland.

The couple later lived on Greenland’s farm, probably helping him run his tavern. They rented out this house to Richard and Susannah Stockton, new arrivals in the area, who bought the property from Brinson’s estate in 1696.

“When Richard Stockton died in 1709, he willed the property to his young son, John, a future county judge, Presbyterian convert, and early trustee of the college. John made significant additions to the house, symbolic of the next generation’s increasing comfort and wealth. Still, his son, Richard, a distinguished signer of the Declaration of Independence, chose to build his own newer, more lavish home on

the property, Morven, rather than live in the house he inherited. Purportedly, Richard “The Signer” quartered troops here during the French and Indian War, earning the house its present nickname.

Between 1764 and the end of the century the house had at least six additional owners, including a British Loyalist and the director of the first Princeton Fire Company. The latter owned seven enslaved people who probably lived on the property. The Barracks also housed both James Madison and Alexander Hamilton when the Continental Congress came to Princeton in 1783. Madison wrote that the house was “without a single accommodation for writing, save in a position that scarcely admits the use of any of my limbs.”

She couldn’t say I told you so

H

er dreams sounded like this: click click click click-clickclick click click Beneath her blanket, her fingers moved involuntarily like Mexican jumping beans.

And for this she blamed her father.

As a young girl in the 1920s she had demonstrated a natural talent for the piano, with hopes of one day becoming a famous musician. But, her teen years coincided with the Great Depression and her father, desperate to put food on the table, envisioned a more utilitarian use for Ella’s nimble fingers. And so he ran an ad in the Princeton Daily newspaper: TYPING DONE Sixty cents per thousand words Quality work Soon Ella was at school during the day and at a typewriter at night and the piano was a distant memory. From a small corner room above her parent’s business on Spring Street, Ella

mastered every kind of document — from business invoices, wills and divorce papers to eviction notices and research papers for Princeton University students. It was through the latter that she met James Sawyer, a freshman who hailed from Boston, who, whether he had a typing job for Ella or not, was seen climbing up the creaky stairs to her office almost daily. And it was James who became the closest thing to a witness to a traumatic event that happened to Ella in August of 1934.

It was late morning on a sunny Saturday when Ella turned from Spring Street and made her way up the hill toward Nassau Street to meet James for a chocolate malt at The Balt luncheonette. She looked ahead and the sidewalk was clear, except for a few young men in the distance dressed alike in navy shorts, brown shirts and black ties. The sun was right in her eyes so she kept her head down as she headed up the road.

As she neared Urken’s Hardware store, their green awning blocked the sun and revealed that the three identical figures were just feet in front of her.

Ella stopped short as she saw that they were now walking stridently toward her, lockstep with no space between them, creating a wall across the sidewalk with no room for her to pass. She caught the eyes of the one in the middle and the look burned permanently into

her memory. The only way she could describe it was that he knew that she was in the way, but he kept walking as if she did not exist.

I

t was too late when she realized that they were not going to stop for her, and not only that, they were walking quicker. She lunged out of the way but the shoulder of the closest teenager crashed into her and it seemed as if he gave an extra push as she went flying into a barrel of penny nails for sale outside of the hardware store. As she hit the ground, the nails spilled out of the barrel onto her.

As the sound of the barrel rolling away stopped, she could hear one of them mutter ‘Dirty Jew,’ followed by raucous laughter that only faded as they disappeared into the distance.

Two men rushed out of the store, helped her to her feet and earnestly asked what had happened, but she was trembling too much to speak and ran back to her office on Spring Street.

She found one of her father’s handkerchiefs in a desk drawer and used it to little avail as she sobbed uncontrollably, hunched over her desk. It was nearly half an hour before a door opened and she heard someone approaching.

“Did you forget about our…” James was saying, before he entered the room and saw her condition.

A hint of history

A

ll of the locations in this story are real — Urken’s, of course, the family-owned hardware store on Witherspoon Street for 64 years that closed in 2002; and the Balt, or Baltimore Dairy Lunch, that a was a fixture on Nassau Street for more than 40 years until it closed in 1963 — but also the Bund Camp, Wille und Macht, in Griggstown.

Not mentioned, but fitting, is Princeton’s first Jewish congregation — now the expansive Jewish Center of Princeton — was formed on Spring Street in the 1920s.

After he had comforted her, she told him what had happened. “These teenagers. They just ran right over me. I saw the look in their eyes and it was . . . emotionless. If there was anything in there, it was just fury. And the uniforms. I think they must have been from the Bund Camp up at Griggstown.”

James looked perplexed. “What is that?”

He had no idea what the Bund Camp was. Ella explained that she had read about “Camp Will and Might” in the newspapers, and that it was just a few See FICTION, Page 12

miles outside of Princeton. It was a prototype American Hitler Youth summer camp and its mission was to teach and indoctrinate German-American youth about the “new” Germany and praise their new leader, Adolf Hitler.

The swastika was mixed in with the American flag to try and equate the two of them. The anti-semitism spilling out from Nazi Germany was hidden by the Bund leaders only through the misinformation of clever spokesmen.

“Why haven’t I heard about this?”

James asked.

“I don’t know, “ Ella chided, “maybe you don’t pay attention to the news.”

He looked up sheepishly and then replied, “Look, I’m sorry. It’s tough to follow all the strange things going on, but try not to get too upset. This is just a small group of nasty people. It will all just go away after a while.”

“Just like these bruises?” she pointed to her shin, where a noticeable lump was already turning black and blue.

He looked embarrassed.

“They called me a dirty Jew!” He still couldn’t find a reply and he could tell she was getting upset again.

“Look,” he started but was interrupted.

“Jimmy, they hate Jews. This is why my parents left Russia. Jews were being blamed for everything that went wrong and were being burned out of their homes.” She was shaking again and he could see tears brewing.

She had come to the Balt anyway.

She ordered the chocolate malts but left them untouched. She just stared at the other customers in the shop, thinking that they all must have similar stories, must have lost someone in the war, and she ended up wondering if they were like Jimmy, good people who were unaware of what was happening and finding out when it was too late. She wished she could go up to each table and just start to talk to them so when this war was over maybe enough people would be ready to prevent another one.

But, she finally thought, there is another way. She could write about it and send it out into the world and try and make a difference.

ineteen hundred and seventysix, the after work crowd gathers, on the grassy banks of the Princeton pool; townies, university professors, an architect, a newspaperman, a feminist lawyer, a young laborer supporting her daughter, an accountant and a music school teacher. Some of us are still swimming here in two thousand nineteen. All white of us in those good old days.

Twenty-nineteen, the splash now of all nations, and a hundred day-campers or more, lunching on the grass, and waiting for the coolest reason for the season; the swimming, of course! Counselors’ whistles blow at noon and a hundred kids, confetti colors of all races flying, leap as one — Don’t run! Don’t run!

Kids feel only the water and the sun and the moment.

Seeing the light – and the stars – at the nexus of science and art

T

his summer, visitors to the Princeton Public Library can enjoy a series of stunning photos that line the walls of the second floor hallway and technology center. The bright, colorful prints, which almost look as if they emit their own light, are called astrophotograps. Taken with a special camera attached to a telescope, they depict stars and other celestial bodies in space, thousands of light years from Earth. The pictures were taken by the library’s current scientist in residence, Professor Robert Vanderbei of Princeton University.

Beauty is only one reason to appreciate these photos. As a mathematician, Vanderbei also likes to understand the physical properties of the objects he photographs. He is especially interested in how big the universe is and how to measure the distances to, and sizes of things. In 2010, he co-wrote a book with J. Richard Gott, published by National Geographic, called “Sizing Up the Universe.” He also teaches a course at Princeton with the same name.

Both the book and the class are all about how people can do these measurements using a telescope and camera that the average person can afford.

They cover basic questions, such as, how we know the earth is spherical, how we know how far away the sun and planets are, and how far away stars are.

“In particular, in the class I show how I’ve done some of these things with my own equipment,” said Vanderbei. He sometimes invites students to his home in Belle Mead for demonstrations.

His role as a teacher extends to the library, where as scientist-in-residence for the summer he is leading several public events in addition to displaying his artwork. Up next is a stargazing night on Wednesday, August 7, on the lawn of Mountain Lakes House.

Vanderbei rekindled his childhood interest in astronomy in the fall of 1999. A colleague, Kirk Alexander, had a calendar with astrographs in his office in Princeton’s engineering quadrangle.

The calendar piqued his interest. “I said ‘Ooh Kirk, you’re into astronomy’ and he said ‘yeah, I’m the director of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Princeton.’ And I said, ‘oh wow, that’s awesome!’ And so he got me interested in it again,” Vanderbei says.

He bought first telescope a few months later. But there was a problem: light pollution. Artificial light from cities and towns makes it difficult to see the night sky in this area. “I subscribed to Sky and Telescope Magazine, and every month I’d get a magazine that would tell me what the cool things are to look at. Art without a telescope

‘Otherworldly’ by Fran Eber.

n view alongside Robert Vanderbei’s astrophotography is a complementary exhibit, “Luminous Matter,” by Princeton-based artist Fran Eber.

In an artist’s statement on the Arts Council website, she writes: “I achieve this otherworldly look in my artwork by combining pigments, fluids, and additives to produce a physical reaction. Layering different densities of paint leads to the formation of cellular structures that echo natural processes. Some of my results are comparable to phenomena that can be observed in astronomy, such as the Rayleigh-Taylor instability seen in the Crab Nebula.

“To create my paintings, I myself mimic the forces of nature by using multiple types of energy. I use the kinetic movement of my hands and body, generating the power needed

to facilitate a chemical reaction in the paint and additives. This chemical reaction itself shapes the structure and design of my work, taking on a life of its own. Finally, I apply heat and fire to my paintings — additional forms of energy — to further induce movement and dynamic interest.

“I experiment to discover new ways to generate surprising and exciting results. With this end in mind, my work uses multiple mixed media approaches. Some of the raw materials that I use include acrylic paint, alcohol inks, encaustic paint, pigments, and epoxy resin.”

Eber, who holds a BFA in visual arts from the Mason Gross School at Rutgers, has works in collections throughout the New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

determined many years ago that the Crab Nebula is still noticeably moving outward. Vanderbei took two pictures of the Crab Nebula 12 years apart and when he overlaid them he noticed that looks just a little bit bigger in the more recent picture.

Of course, for Vanderbei, this becomes a problem of applied math. “I actually have, just for fun, compared those two pictures and made an estimate of how long ago I think it exploded just from how much that second picture has expanded, and I get around the year 1050, plus or minus 50 years.

But I get about the right answer,” he says. “It’s pretty cool.”

The photos are on display at Princeton Public Library until through Friday, September 6, on the second floor.

Not at the Peacock Inn

ne by one, residents approached the microphone at the June 26 Zoning Board meeting and lauded the food, the drinks, and the ambiance at the Peacock Inn. And one by one, each resident voiced vehement opposition to allowing that same restaurant to add outdoor seating.

After nearly two hours of discussion the board voted unanimously to deny the Peacock Inn the variance it sought to allow for outdoor seating. The restaurant had hoped to add an 885-square-foot patio at the side and rear of the property that would accommodate 10 tables, or 40 diners.

The variance was required because the restaurant and hotel is operating in a residential zone, which constitutes a non-conforming use. Per Zoning Officer Derek Bridger, the addition of outdoor seating is an addition to that use. By law, then, the restau-

rant must establish that such a change could occur “without substantial detriment to the public good,” in particular with regard to effects on neighboring properties. (A second set of variances, related to two storage sheds installed at the rear of the property, was approved.)

This is not the first time the restaurant has clashed with its neighbors on Boudinot Street and Morven Place. Residents there have frequently voiced concerns about the Inn’s valet parking practices and issues with noisy garbage collections at early morning hours.

Valet parking concerns have been somewhat alleviated thanks to an agreement with the YMCA that allows the restaurant to park up to 30 cars in its parking lot, but the restaurant cannot stop patrons from self-parking on the otherwise quiet side streets.

This time, it was worries about noise that had the neighbors lined up at the podium to speak. Residents from six different homes on Boudinot and Morven noted that already, they could hear conversations among workers outside the restaurant and the slamming of car doors in the driveway. The addition of 40 people sitting outside through a full meal and the associated noise — clanging dishes, loud chatter —was a step too far.

Michael Gale, property manager for the ownership team behind the Inn, cited restaurant and hotel patrons’ requests for outdoor seating as evidence of demand for it. He tried to assuage concerns about noise and parking, indicating that the restaurant closed at 9 p.m., and that the new seating would be considered an alternate rather than an addition to indoor seating, not resulting in an increase in the total number of diners each day.

In his closing remarks, Marc Citron, an attorney from law firm Saul Ewing representing the Peacock Inn, noted “This is not the Ivy Inn. I’ve never seen anybody walking outside drunk, and I too frequent the Peacock Inn. The present owner has made the yeoman’s effort to try to address to neighbors’ concerns.”

But it wasn’t enough, and the restaurant’s application was denied.

Hope for Princeton’s food waste program

ix months after Princeton’s compost collection program was halted due to escalating costs and problems with the hauling company, there is hope for a new and improved food waste program.

At the July 22 Council meeting Township Administrator Marc Dashield announced that the municipality has the opportunity to acquire a food digester from MetLife Stadium, which no longer needs it.

MetLife Stadium would donate the machine, but the municipality would incur roughly $20,000 in costs to transport and make repairs to the device, Dashield said.

He explained that the township is envisioning managing food waste collection via a public-private partnership in which the municipality provides hauling services, and a private entity is responsible for processing the materials and finding a place for them n contrast, Kristine’s, the new restaurant by Jack to go.

Bytes and bites in the dog days

T

he problem is becoming more painful every day. I have a bad sense of direction, I am constantly guilty of missing turns, getting off on the wrong floor, and I always struggle to find my house keys. Are they lying on the bedside table, in the kitchen drawer, or in my handbag?

And where is that handbag again?

My four-legged housemates, on the other hand, know exactly where they can and cannot go, keep track of their location, and sashay in and out of the house without any guidance from me.

Here is the big difference: they are golden retrievers, and I am not.

Many of us carry pedometers or other electronic measuring instruments to keep track of ourselves. We try to cram more apps into our smartphones. But let’s admit that this high-tech race has long ago been won by our furry friends.

Our two adorable dogs are fully loaded with computer power. First of all, they wear an electronic tell-tale that keeps track of how close they are straying to the “invisible fence” around our yard.

A whistling sound first warns them. If they go farther, a shock follows. That

potential shock was for me at first an almost insurmountable barrier. How could I hurt those dear ones? But in practice, one shock was more than enough. It is not without reason that Pavlov did his experiments with dogs.

In addition, they wear — on the advice of the our vet because dogs also prefer to lie on the couch all day — a special dog pedometer, the FitBark, which accurately keeps track of how many steps they take every day. (By the way, I wonder how this four-legged counter works. It would be fair if the number of steps were divided by two.)

inally, there is the swinging dog door, which, at the exact moment that they stand there with their snouts in front of it, lifts up with an electronic “Open, Sesame.” Especially when I am outside in the dark looking for my keys to get back into the house, they mock me for my technological deficits by nonchalantly strolling in and out of the house. How hard can it be?

The temptation then is to crawl through the dog door yourself. After all, I just have to borrow their collar.

But I am afraid that I will lose my natural authority in one fell swoop, like a se-

nior manager who tries to mess around with computers in the IT department.

The fact that pets are better suited for domestic life in the future was already clear from our confrontation with the American immigration service when we arrived seven years ago. We were taken like potential criminals to a dim office where the officials extensively studied our immigration papers, in particular the X-rays of our lungs and the extensive vaccination certificates.

As if we were still living in the 19th century and bringing the most lethal diseases from the Old World with us.

After this hour-long interrogation,

our hearts sank. How would our two domestic cats then fare? But the opposite was the case. In literally one minute the microchips already implanted in their ears were read and their complete medical records recorded by a computer. Check! Check! Go! They were allowed to continue at once. Totally at home in the New World.
