lection day is Tuesday, November 8, and both Princeton Council and School Board seats are up for grabs.

In the Council race, Democratic incumbents Mia Sacks and Michelle PironeLambros are running unopposed. They faced no primary challengers, and no Republicans filed to run. Both are seeking their second three-year terms.

There are five candidates for three open seats on the Board of Education. Incumbents Dafna Kendal, Susan Kanter, and Debbie Bronfeld are running for re-election against challengers Lishian “Lisa” Wu and Margarita “Rita” Rafalovsky.

Deadline extended for community survey

T

he Community Visioning Survey deadline has been extended to midnight on Sunday, Nov. 6, the Princeton Planning Department announced this week. The survey, which takes about 10 minutes to complete, invites residents to express their opinions about Princeton, what they value in the community, and what concerns them most. The survey can be found at https://engage.princetonmasterplan.org.

“We want to give people extra time to be able to contribute their opinions and ideas to this important effort,” said Municipality of Princeton Senior Planner Justin Lesko. “In addition, we have made some upgrades to the survey website for ease of accessibility and overall improved experience based on feedback we have received from residents.”

Thousands of responses were collected this past summer in the first “Tell Us What You Want” Consumer Survey that focused on economic development and consumer preferences. This second survey is the next phase in Princeton’s Master Plan and focuses on broader issues, including housing, development, parks, transportation, and sustainability.

Survey findings are crucially important in preparing for upcoming communitywide open houses, formulating overarching master plan goals and principles, and preparing for detailed decision-making and specific recommendations regarding land use, mobility, conservation and preservation.

The Planning Department, Master Plan Steering Committee and consultants Clarke Caton Hintz are preparing for an open house event on Wednesday, November 30, at the Princeton Public Library Community Room from 4 to 7 p.m. The open house will give the public an in-person opportunity to come listen to ideas, ask questions, and contribute in a mean-

ingful way during the three-hour block.

The Princeton Master Plan is a document, adopted by the Planning Board, which sets forth the policies for land use as envisioned by the municipality. This includes the character and location of new development and redevelopment, as well as circulation (vehicles, pedestrians and bikes), hazard mitigation and climate adaptation, conservation, preservation, utilities, public facilities and other elements of the built and natural environment.

Through its various “elements,” which are distinct and yet interrelated, the master plan articulates a vision for the community, informed by the community.

Per New Jersey’s Municipal Land Use Law, which lays out the role and powers of the Planning Board, all municipalities must adopt a municipal master plan.

Thus, the master plan is both an important legal document and a community’s vision for how and where growth should occur.

News from PPL: Submissions open for Environmental Film Festival

S

ubmissions are being accepted through January 23 for the 2023 Princeton Environmental Film Festival (PEFF), a signature Princeton Public Library event featuring films and filmmaker presentations which explore sustainability and environmental issues.

The festival will be held March 24 through 31, and films will be screened in person and available to stream online. An entry form and additional information about PEFF is available at princetonlibrary.org/peff. There is no fee to submit a film for consideration.

The Princeton Environmental Film Festival is under the direction of Susan Conlon and Kim Dorman whose focus is to present films with local, regional and international relevance, and engage our community in exploring environmental sustainability from a wide range of angles and perspectives. Princeton’s student theater scene celebrates three anniversaries

G

iving a performance in the limelight of the Hamilton Murray Theater does not always require being on stage, because with only a modest 200 or so seats to spare, the student-run productions of Théâtre Intime and the Princeton Summer Theater go beyond these constraints to achieve artistic freedom of their own design.

In a celebration of three anniversaries held over just as many days, the local theater scene responsible for shaping over a century’s worth of thespians — without any direct oversight from Princeton University — is honored with a reunion and recognition of its history.

With festivities organized by the Friends of Théâtre Intime and other adjacent entities, the 100th and 50th anniversaries of Théâtre Intime and Princeton Summer Theater, as well as the 100th anniversary of the Hamilton Murray Theater, are proof that the show does truly go on.

The weekend’s schedule, which is half homecoming and general arts appreciation, starts at noon on Friday, November 4 through Sunday, November 6, at 4 p.m.

Members of the Princeton community who might just have an interest in the screenings, panels, or a chance to see William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” live may attend for the price of a $50 special pass.

Théâtre Intime, a French name translating to the “Intimate Theater,” was the first of the two to establish itself at the HMT in the early 1920s. In 1988, alumnus J. William “Bill” Charrier joined forces with several students to form the Friends of Théâtre Intime, a group that would support its future operations.

One of those original members, Geoffrey “Geoff ” Peterson, founded the Princeton Summer Theater (originally called “Summer Intime”) in 1968 with Charles “Chuck” Bernstein and Jon Lorrain. There, programming ran between semesters in the warmest season — when the University would be closed — and like Intime before it, PST became a community center, but one in which the young industry professionals could finally gain experience and money.

While both theater groups have been stepping stones for celebrities such as classic Hollywood actor James “Jimmy” Stewart and “Wicked” writer Winnie Holzman, PST is a key part of the upcoming

The Hamilton Murray Theater on the Princeton University campus has been a home base for student theater productions for the past 100 years.

Hamilton Murray Theater’s (HMT100) event for Peterson, who was more than happy to help as archivist and director of the Hamilton Murray Theater Centennial Film Festival.

“Acting, directing applause of the audience…those were all the great things, and a lot of people feel that, but for me, the big moment was always about two in the morning down in the business office with one of those old fashioned adding machines — this was before calculators — and realizing that we were making it,” Peterson said, reflecting on how “nothing else could beat” such a simple yet powerful feeling.

“The key element of that is the entrepreneurial aspect, and that’s what was always special about Théâtre Intime from the beginning, and the Summer Theater when it came over,” Peterson said. “In fact, even more so, because there you were trying to earn a living in the summer. In the school year, theoretically, you’re a college student, but in the summer, you were trying to earn a living, and that is what separates it from other theater programs, including even Princeton’s theater program, which it does have now,” he said.

After Friday’s registration, Peterson will unveil his curatorial project at the nearby Mudd Library in an exhibition encompassing over a century’s worth of history “in programs, playbills, flyers, photos, newspaper articles, letters, and more” from both Intime and PST. The film festival takes place at the James Stewart Film Theater, first premiering at 2:30 p.m. with a reception before an initial round of screenings commence. Pe-

terson remarks that the Stewart Theater is a fitting location for the series of new, unscreened films, given that the Princetonian of its namesake shows up in archival footage and photographs at the event.

The seven programs consist of four features and about a dozen or so short subjects, all of which were “expressly created for the festival,” the HM100 website states.

Overall, the content includes 300-plus alumni and continues running throughout the weekend.

One of the more recent entries is a recording of the 2019 Summer Theater’s performance of Topdog/Underdog, which will feature the cast returning for a live chat. Another, the aptly titled “Behind the Scenes,” shows generations of the show behind the curtain.

“Keeping the Flame - The Story of a Logo,” is a brief yet humorous piece of HMT history about how student and future PST founder Jon Lorrain’s iconic, hand-drawn flame icon would change over time (albeit unintentionally). Before it could ever stand tall, the image was printed upside down in its 1966 playbill debut, still enduring but, little by little, slanting more to the right.

Then, for an Intime production of Twelfth Night — the same show being performed at the anniversary weekend by current Théâtre Intime undergraduates — the fire went from curved to falling down completely, with its then-sideways orientation leading many to assume that the symbol was, and perhaps had always been, a hyphen.

“Everybody who went through Intime thought they knew what the Intime logo

was, and of course, it’s different for everybody. They just don’t know it,” Peterson said, noting that he is curious what the response from attendees will be when faced with the amusing reality.

Although it will not yet be released by the anniversary weekend, Peterson said that another film, “The Hamilton Murray 100,” will correlate with one hundred “notable practitioners in the creative or performing arts who have all gone through that little building,” he explained, acknowledging that while there are talents far in excess of that number, “If you start naming them, it’s quite breathtaking.” “[There are] the obvious ones like Jimmy Stewart and Jose Ferrer, but also John Lithgow,” Peterson said, and like him, many of these figures dipped their toes into both the Triangle Club and Intime.

“It just goes on and on.”

PST graduates like Geoff Rich, who co-produced the musical “Avenue Q” as executive director of the New Group Theatre Company, and Princeton High School alumna Bebe Neuwirth, who starred in the stage revivals of “Sweet Charity” (1986) and “Chicago” (1996), have gone on to win Tony awards.

As a tribute to alums who have passed on, there will also be an “In Memoriam” screening of a short film in honor of figures like Lorrain and William Bill Hootkins — an actor of screen, stage and space with credits spanning Star Wars to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Théâtre Intime’s 2022-23 season presents showings of “Twelfth Night” on Friday at 8 p.m., then Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., for free with admission.

This romantic comedy is directed by Solomon Bergquist in presentation with the Princeton Shakespeare Company, promising “love triangles, cross-dressing and plenty of mistaken identities,” according to their website, that will resume from Nov. 11 through 13. While at Princeton, Goodman starred in productions of “Brussels” and “Dead Giveaway,” then returned to her native New York City to become a Broadway stage actress. For two decades, she took on roles covering for Audra McDonald in “Master Class” and as Grizabella in “Cats: The Musical,” then shifted to work in the nonprofit sector.

Getting Grounded Meet the Minds Behind Ongoing GFS Exhibits ‘Night Forms’ and ‘The Village Potter’

Now, ‘Infinite Wave,’ the second, expanded iteration of the project, will take its place in the coming month.

between the existing sculpture is paramount,” continued Rivera, whose other work has included a light and sound installation at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania and Philadelphia’s City Hall.

Then, the group of reporters walked into the night—and into Rivera’s dreams.

“Klip Collective is just a production company,” Rivera said at the group’s studio in South Philadelphia’s Bok Building, a renovated industrial art school, a few weeks after the press event. “I’d like to call it adhocracy, which means we build our teams per project and pull the rest of the resources we can for the project.”

Rivera said while he is the creative force behind the company, it is supported by a core team comprised of his coordinating director and wife, Michelle, as well as a studio assistant, sound technician and producer.

“It’s like a movie studio,” he explained.

“They don’t have cinematographers and directors with them every day.”

“The studio is a place for me to experiment and develop products. It was established in 2003. We’ve evolved since then,” Rivera said.

The 46-year-old father of two daughters grew up in Delaware. His Puerto Rico-born father ended a military career in Dover, worked for the state, and then the federal government. He credits his Thai mother with

getting him interested in American music and film; early in life, Rivera created homemade videos featuring burning toys.

That fascination also took him to the University of Delaware. While he said it was not the place to learn to make films, he got involved with theater and worked in a student-run production company where he taught himself how to use the equipment, launched a film festival and “started having my own art shows.”

Rivera said his curiosity began when he and his college roommates rented a space over a Chinese laundry that “held art parties,” then hung out with the bands featured there.

“One of the musicians was an electronic music producer, and all these DJs were coming [to his studio]. He said he had a projector and asked if I wanted to show videos,” Rivera said, then added he brought out some mixes, having just finished his second film with original music.

The result was that Rivera learned that he was part of a new vanguard in the music scene—a video jockey or VJ. He was also invited to illuminate shows and events in Baltimore.

“I wanted to be a filmmaker and also wanted to make art,” he said. Rivera thought about attending New York University film school, but chose his own path when Kevin Smith, the New Jersey-raised director of

“Clerks” and “Chasing Amy,” advised him to not pay thousands of dollars to create a film no one is going to see. Instead, he suggested to use a ‘do-it-yourself’ type of approach.

Rivera, gesturing to his three-room studio, said, “It all came from this weird ride—doing raves” and using video clips—the genesis of the company’s name (with a K added to steer people away from thinking of the term “clip art”).

“We honor where we came from,” he said.

Rivera met his future wife at the University of Delaware and then settled in her hometown of Philadelphia. “I learned a lot all those years and developed an aesthetic and a vibe. My production soul was born,” Rivera shared.

It was there he enrolled in a community college and took a ceramics class.

Lugo said he was drawn initially to the practice because he could meet other students and have a college experience, but without having to write too much. He also appreciated the tactility of the materials because it reminded him of something he saw in his community—physical labor.

Then, he found something more.

“When I started working in pottery, it felt so right, and it was the first time people gave me encouragement,” Lugo said in an interview earlier this year.

However, he said, there was also doubt.

“I realized that there weren’t a lot of people I know who were artists, and none who were potters. It made me realize how few people could make a living from the [potter’s] wheel. I tried to make functional, production pottery, but I kept asking why people would buy these when [mass-produced

pottery works] were cheap.”

Then, Lugo came across an edition of art magazine ‘Ceramics Monthly’ that featured a graffitied pot on the cover. “[The piece] had a shape I had never seen before and used the wheel in a different way. It made so much sense to me, and I felt [at] that moment that I could do that, that I had something to contribute,” he said, additionally with the hope of representing the people and artists he could not see in the studio.

With an imagination fired by the thought of a career firing ceramics, Lugo began seeking out opportunities, and he decided to go to Kansas City Arts Institute.

Lugo knew he needed a portfolio of work, and enough money, to be accepted.

With his kiln, determination and a broken back, Lugo sold about “$10 or $15” pottery pieces.

Lugo said that at the time, his brother had been arrested back in Kensington, and that Ross was planning an exhibition in Philadelphia. He decided to talk to him and ask him to assess his street-inspired pottery.

“He was the first person who was actually interacting with people from the neighborhood that I was from,” Lugo explained.

Ross asked him to be in an exhibition, the Crane Arts Center’s 2013 “Juvenile in Justice” in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. Through that experience, Lugo put his blend of traditional pottery, street design, and social commentary on the art map.

His other opportunities were as an artistin-residence at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia, an instructor at Marlboro College in Vermont and a current faculty member of

nia State University to work with Chris Daly, whom Lugo called a legendary potter, educator and mentor whose “whole life is art.” Also at Penn State was Shannon Goff, an “influential mentor as a teacher, and the first person who understood what I wanted to say with my work, understood the content.”

As part of a tribute, Lugo included both Daly and Goff in an exhibition section devoted to the artists who mentored him, as well as those he similarly helped guide.

“I wanted to show [that] it takes a village to make an artist,” he said.

While at Penn State, where he received an MFA, he took a leap that launched him into a gallery and into the art world; established California-based documentary photographer Richard Ross was on campus to discuss his work photographing incarcerated youth for a book, as well as to critique student work.

Regarding the title, Lugo said, “I grew up doing graffiti art. It was my first art form. I never took art classes before I did pottery.

People often see graffiti as just vandalism and use the word ‘defacing,’ so I thought of different ways of defacing. I thought of defacing adversity; I had lots of experiences growing up with racism, so making art in spite of it was defacing over it—defacing it and negative things.”

Lugo’s 2018 piece in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, “Reckoning: Protest. Defiance. Resilience” extended that idea further.

According to the museum materials, “Lugo reframes the traditional color, form, and repetitive imagery of ancient Greek kraters to focus on the issue of violence that disproportionately affects people of color in economically disadvantaged urban communities, including violence at the hands of law enforcement.”

Represented in the composition are depictions of kneeling figures, police officers clad in riot gear and pointed guns.

When speaking about the themes and images, Lugo said that while he focuses on urban situations, his intent is broader.

“I want to clarify that my entire experience is not negative; it’s about celebrating people who contributed. A lot of my work is a celebration and rooted in that. Even in situations where you find yourself with different people of color, they all have different experiences.

Poverty and race are distinct.”

“I approach art from the place I know—hip hop culture,” he said. To make the point, Lugo explained his affinity for the Staten Island hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan.

“They took a combination of Kung Fu movies and hip hop and synthesized them together to give a unique sound. They gave the beauty of how you can fuse two cultures.”

“I’m referencing and making connections, but I’m not trying to own that culture as an identity; my work is trying to synthesize, combine,” Lugo emphasized.

When he pulls from his interest in Royal Porcelain tea cups, for example, he also pulls from his memory.

“Both of my parents are from Puerto Rico,” Lugo said. His father was a Pentecostal minister and spray painter, and his mother was a school cafeteria worker turned registered nurse.

“Culturally, I’m from the Indigenous people from Puerto Rico, [as well as] Portuguese and Spanish. It’s a huge part of what I paint and draw,” explained Lugo, who has two sons, Theodore and Otto, with artist wife Ashley.

He also draws on these experiences as both a spoken word artist and a lecturer — during his 2015 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) emerging culture presentation, Lugo addressed an audience of approximately 3,000 ceramic educators with the following line: “We’re a culture that can change the world.”

Lugo noted that having the opportunity to deliver that speech was “the most influential” aspect of his work thus far.

He also explained that it started him on a different career trajectory to focus on connecting with exhibiting venues where his ceramics would be seen as “visual art and design and allowed me to take on unique

projects — like working here [at GFS].”

The decision also seemed to support Lugo’s approach to creating.

“With my particular practice, most of my time is spent painting pots. I take twice as long to paint. Part of my aesthetic is to [paint] over things. It comes from my graffiti days.

I just paint over [the work] until it makes sense, and all that layering gives a depth to the piece that I find appealing.”

Yet despite his success, Lugo said, “I ask myself, ‘Do I have the agency to make the work that I do?’ I ask myself, ‘Why do I have the opportunities I do?’ I think a lot of the challenges. Pottery lends itself to patience and a lot of detail—two things I’m not good at. People are looking for a refinement of craft, but I fail in a lot of those ways. My obsessions are different, [but] I’m working on it. It’s a lifetime commitment.”

Looking at the exhibition, Lugo appreciates that he is exhibiting next to Trenton and mentioned the city’s history as a major world ceramics producer.

While he hoped that connection would stimulate interest, he also bet on something bigger.

“One of the great things about this exhibition is the 20-foot-tall vase,” Lugo said.

“Usually, I make a vignette on one. But people can walk into this vase and be the vignette in the pottery and become part of the artwork. Part of the art is having people interact with it. It becomes about people remembering the big pot, not the artist. I never had the opportunity to make a piece like this, bigger than human size.”

Lugo shared one final thought: “I really hope that this exhibition makes Black and Brown communities feel that there is art here that connects with them. I hope to be a bridge and make connections. Going into any space and gallery can be intimidating, but going into any space where there’s familiarity can be less so.”

The whole mini dental implant placement procedure takes approximately one hour. Generally, in the case of lower jaw implants, four to six MDIs will be placed about 5mm apart. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton Spine surgery gives Hamilton Township woman her life back It was during an exercise class in 2017 that Lourenza Mejia of Hamilton Township noticed the first hint that something wasn’t right: a sensation she describes as a “shock” in her left leg. “It came from nowhere, would come and go, then stop,” she says. “I’d feel it for seconds, and that was it.”

Concerned, she consulted a doctor who had performed minimally invasive spine surgery on her husband, Juan Carlos Mejia, in 2009: Marc J. Levine, MD, Director of the Orthopedic Spine Surgery Program in the Orthopedic and Spine Institute at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Hamilton and a member of RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group. An MRI revealed she had spondylolisthesis, a condition in which one bony vertebra of the spine slips forward in relation to the vertebra below it.

“The vertebrae are essentially rings stacked on top of each other with the spinal cord running down the middle,” Dr. Levine says. “When one ring moves forward, there’s less space in the middle where the nerves are.” That can pinch nerves in the spinal canal, causing a range of symptoms, including pain.

“In 2019, I started feeling tingling and numbness

in my two feet,” Mejia says. “I knew my main spinal nerve was being compressed.”

The value of surgery started to become clear. “At this point, I was more scared to become dependent than to go for surgery,” Mejia says. “Surgery offered a chance to have my life back.”

Mejia decided to proceed with surgery at RWJUH Hamilton both because the hospital was right in her own community and because her husband’s earlier spine surgery had turned out well.

“We used a relatively new minimally invasive procedure called an extreme lateral interbody fusion,” Dr. Levine says.

The procedure accesses the spine through small incisions in the side rather than through the back or front of the body. “This approach doesn’t disrupt major back muscles and avoids the often-painful long-term problems people can have with open procedures,” he says.

Dr. Levine placed a titanium implant in Mejia’s spine and blocked it in place with a plate and screws. Special imaging called fluoroscopic intraoperative imaging took continuous X-rays that provided the surgical team video-like views of the spine as they worked.

“The implant allows us to realign, fix and fuse the spine, which takes pressure off the nerve and prevents the deformity from worsening,” Dr. Levine says. “These minimally invasive procedures allow patients to recover much more quickly with less pain than they would with traditional open procedures. Many times, results can be dramatic

eton University had yet to become coeducational, but Peterson said that Théâtre Intime included women “almost from its very first year.” He founded PST a year before his 1969 graduation, but by then, Peterson’s perspectives had evolved to shape his future professional career.

“The Summer Theater in Princeton, which was a real business activity…that was quite a learning experience, and I’m not in any way the only one for whom that is true. There are a lot of Summer Theater people in particular who will tell you that it was an important moment in their careers,” Peterson continued, with many of them set to return this upcoming weekend.

Peterson relocated to New York City with Savadge, where they still reside upstate in a shared studio space. He went from local to lauded when, after eight years working as a ticket clerk, he became the managing director of the Metropolitan Opera Guild in 1978.

At the time, Peterson clarified in a follow-up email, the organization “was one of the dozen largest (by budget) performing arts nonprofits in the U.S.,” and he oversaw it until his retirement in 1984 to become the president of a production company in the same state.

By 2004, Peterson’s son, Jed, was the general manager of the Princeton Summer Theater 36 years after it was founded by his father. Geoff even returned to play a

small part, calling it “a real treat to watch [Jed’s] work” in the place they had both led.

Peterson produced about a dozen years of video and DVD work for the Princeton Triangle Club, where he remains an emeritus trustee, but has also written musicals in the past. He said that his wife is the

main author of the two; during the pandemic, Savadge wrote an 8-minute short film, “Wedding March,” produced by Peterson and directed by fellow Princeton graduate Nadia Talel, that “aired on the PBS NY Channel 13 ‘Reel 13’ program.”

In consideration of the larger impact, Goodman explained that before the Lewis

Center for the Arts opened with programs for theater and other creative disciplines, Princeton’s performing arts were not as publicly appreciated in comparison to schools like Harvard or Yale.

But since the Lewis Center was established, she contends that the area has been moving towards “a new era in the performing arts” where the benefits of an education in theater — no matter if students wish to be future executives or executants — are being acknowledged. “[Empathy] stems from when you sit, and you write a character that isn’t you.

When you play a character that isn’t you, you learn to step into somebody else’s shoes,” she explained. “Performing arts, and arts in general, foster creativity; it fosters entrepreneurship, it fosters invention, and I think Princeton has finally recognized that.”

“I think the world needs to recognize that — certainly, Americans need to recognize that more palpably. But that’s what Théâtre Intime does and has been doing for the last 100 years and will continue to do,” Goodman said.

The seating might be sparse, but the atmosphere at the Hamilton Murray Theater embraces the nostalgia of seeing familiar faces with just as much comfort as it opens the door for new stories and a triple-threat of anniversary observances.
