Aledo High School Class of 2013

Aaron Albritton is the son of James and Jill Albritton. Math has always been his favorite subjects because he finds it to be logic-based and easy to understand. Physics has been a challenge, though, and he thanks Mrs. McCane for doing a good job teaching it. Aaron is a member of the National Honor Society. He plans to attend Clemson University to pursue a degree in engineering. He has been awarded a $500 scholarship from Clemson and an Out of State Tuition Scholarship for $14,600. Aaron has chosen to honor Jessica McCane. He says, “I could imagine a physics class being very boring and extremely difficult without Mrs. McCane. I most likely would not have chosen an engineering major if Mrs. McCane hadn’t been there to teach and reassure me. Her class is my favorite because she makes subjects like geometric optics interesting. And then I can say words like “geometric optics” in context.”

Kendall Baker is the daughter of Fremon and Candy Baker. Her favorite subject has been PAP Algebra II. Math has always been her best subject and she feels very fortunate to have such a wonderful teacher to help her excel in it. Kendall is a member of National Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, the marching band, jazz band and the wind ensemble. She received a one in competition for Solo Sax and was named to the Honor Ensemble. Kendall has been awarded many scholarships including the Baylor University President’s Gold Scholarship, the SMU and TCU Founders Scholarships, OU Distinguished Scholar and Oklahoma All State University Achievement Scholarship. She plans to attend Texas A&M to major in business. Karley has chosen to honor Mrs. Mary McLellan. She states, “I’ve had her for both PAP Algebra II and AP Statistics and she is not only a great teacher, but a great motivator and always has a smile on her face, even though I was the third Baker kid she has taught. My oldest brother also chose her as his honored teacher a few years ago, and knowing how different we are, it is apparent she is special to all students. I am so thankful for all the great teachers I’ve had this year, but Mrs. McLellan stands out among many wonderful teachers.”

Gabriel Bogdanoff is the son of James and Janice Bogdanoff. Physics has been his favorite subject and he states: “the things we learned were immediately applicable to how the world worked.” Gabriel is a member of the National Honor Society, the “Spirit of Aledo” flag group and played soccer. He also studied Advanced Sculpture in Art and competed at VASE and won second place at the Cowtown Art Competition, winning $1,500. Gabriel plans to study engineering at the University of Arkansas and has been awarded a scholarship from the University. Carter has chosen to honor Coach Greg Wright. Carter writes, “Coach Wright was not only my history teacher and soccer coach, but he was also the person who taught me to be a man. His history class, or, as some of my fellow students said, “Philosophy 101,” taught me that life is about leaving behind a legacy and not just a faded memory. He showed me that as long as I give my all I will have nothing to regret. It is not the outcome, but the journey that creates who I am.”

Pate Davis is the son of Alisa and Jeff Davis. His favorite subject has been Physics because it was challenging and interesting at the same time. Pate has been involved in the National Honor Society and was the offensive captain and quarterback of the Bearcat Varsity Football team. He has been named to the Aledo High Who’s Who seven times, was named to the First Team Academic All-State for football and was the Wing Stop Player of the Month. Pate will attend the United States Air Force Academy this fall. Pate selected Mary McLellan to be his honored teacher. He says, “Mrs. McLellan is one of the most dedicated teachers I’ve ever seen. She takes personal responsibility for the progress of her students, and her passion for teaching can be seen daily in her lectures. She is constantly searching for better angles to look at lessons to help her students fully understand concepts. This quality touched me by holding me accountable in my studies. If she was putting in 100 percent every day, then I had to also.”

Annie May Denny is the daughter of Mike and Betsy Denny. Her favorite subject has been Biology because it taught her how perfectly the body works together. This subject has interested her and inspired her to go into the medical field. Annie is a member of the National Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, the Robotics Club and the band. She has received an academic scholarship from Oklahoma Baptist University where she will study Nursing. Annie is also a recipient of the Aledo Band Boosters Scholarship. Annie has chosen to honor Mrs. Kristi Phillips. She says, “Although Mrs. Phillips has only been my teacher this year, she has been a member of my home church for many years. She has not only influenced me in the classroom to be environmentally friendly, but also at church to live a life pleasing to our Heavenly Father. Mrs. Phillips and I attended a mission trip to Peru last summer. During our trip, Mrs. Phillips took care of my health and gave me an amazing example of how a godly woman serves the Lord. Thank you, Mrs. Phillips for not only being my teacher, but also for being an encouragement to live a more holy life.”

Daniel Duncan is the son of Paul and Beth Duncan. His favorite subject is English. He writes, “Despite my intense dislike of grammar lessons, English class has always remained enjoyable. As an avid reader, the discussions over assigned novels were the best part.” Daniel has been a member of the Tri-M Honor Society, National Honor Society, the Academic UIL Literary Criticism Team, Latin Club and the band. He was a state qualifier in Band Ensemble twice, a state qualifier in Literary Criticism and is an Eagle Scout. Daniel has been awarded the University of Arkansas Bi-State Resident Scholarship and he will study Biomedical Engineering there in the fall. Daniel’s honored teacher is Mrs. Myrna Sam. He says, “Acting as both a teacher and a coach for my high school years, Mrs. Sam has had quite the impact on my educational career. Throughout my years on the literary criticism team she has always found new ways to challenge us. In the same way, Mrs. Sam goes above and beyond to push her students. I have put more work into AP English 3 than any other class, and for that reason I have taken the worst away from it. But most importantly, Mrs. Sam has taught me that the best way to enjoy yourself is to laugh at yourself.”

Not only has she gone through every aspect of the curriculum with great detail and patience, but she has also helped me understand what to expect next year in a whole new environment. Mrs. Hackfeld has also been very supportive and easy to work with when sports interfered with class time. It is these reasons that I will always remember the great year I had in Mrs. Hackfeld’ s classroom.”

She adds, “Of course, classes with Mrs. Sam and Mr. Carpenter are always fun and interesting.” Amelia is a member of National Honor Society, Latin Club and is on the Swim Team. She was named Academic All-State and TISCA AllState for Swim, is the Aledo High School Who’s Who in AP Physics and is an AP Scholar. Natasha’s honored teacher is Mrs. Jessica McCane. She says, “Throughout my high school career I have been lucky to have so many excellent teachers, but Mrs. McCane and the two years I spent in her classroom stands out. She successfully transformed physics from something ambiguous and intimidating to enjoyably challenging. She saw potential in me which gave me confidence in my work. However, outside of the classroom she taught me to pick my battles, put thing into perspective, and never, ever take anyone’s crap. Thanks Mrs. McCane for going above and beyond and taking the time to listen.”

He was named Academic All-State Elite Team Football, Texas Scholar Award Honorable Mention; three-time Aledo High School Who’s Who and is an AP Scholar. Eric will attend Rice University in the fall to study Economics or Engineering. Eric has chosen to honor Mr. Matthew Carpenter. He writes, “Before my final year of high school English, reading always felt like a chore. In Mr. Carpenter’s class, however, late nights reading everything from Crime and Punishment to Shakespeare were worth the effort. The class discussions he led made reading enjoyable and learning to love reading has been by far the greatest impact a teacher has had on me. He also spent extra time with me to work on college essays and e-mails which helped get me into a great school.”

Lily Garton is the daughter of Lyle and Lisa Garton. Her favorite subject is English because she loves to write and read. Lily is a member of National Honor Society and the Academic UIL Literary Criticism team. She is always on the staff of the Cat’s Eye Newspaper. Lily is a National Merit and an AP Honor Scholar. I found myself actually looking forward to discussing the many novels we read and occasionally picking up a life lesson or two. From telling one of his many interesting stories to having class discussions on the floor, Mr. Carpenter always kept class engaging. He allows us to bounce ideas off one another, which in turn leads to better understanding of a piece of literature. He recognizes us as adults and treats us as such. Shakespeare plays seemed more interesting when Mr. Carpenter would occasionally act out the scenes in his usual nonchalant manner and nothing more needs to be said about Mrs. Sam’s famous one-liners. It’s simply the consolidation of the teachers’ personalities that brings English from a state of prosaicness to the sublime.” Kathleen is a member of the National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and the Bearcat band and is a reporter for the Cats’ Eye newspaper. She has been name an AP Scholar, has been recognized for outstanding service in Tri-M. Kathleen was awarded the Baylor University President’s Gold Scholarship and will attend the University of Texas at Austin. She plans to major in Business. Kathleen has chosen to honor Mr. Jake Albin. In the case of an opportunity to go fishing in the open sea forever, he would take it in a heartbeat. But, for now, his passion for music keeps him on dry land.
