meaning staff will be given priority for any suitable alternative roles – as well as offering staff a four-week trial period in any role they are redeployed to.

GLA officials have also reinstated six posts initially highlighted for “deletion”, while another five selected for cuts could yet be restored.

“In making those changes in response to the consultation feedback, it means that we will not achieve the full £7.2 million savings we consulted on,” GLA Chief Officer Mary Harpley told the London Assembly GLA Oversight Committee on Wednesday (May 20).

“I can’t change the plan to delete posts and still save the same money. We will not know the final figure that we’ve achieved through this first consultation until July.

“I estimate that we will still save about £6.6 million from this round of savings and efficiencies. The shortfall on this phase means that we will have to add that into the remaining phase of consultation, which we will plan to do in the autumn.”

THERE ARE 80 roles within the Greater London Authority (GLA) still at risk, senior officials have confirmed, as City Hall was condemned for the “alarming” scale of job cuts.

In March, City Hall stated that it needed to save about £10 million through cuts to staffing posts, and subsequently consulted on the first £7million of the figure through the reduction of 101 roles across some parts of the GLA, which employs over 1,500 people.

At the start of the process 189 members of staff were put at risk, though the figure now sits at 80. So far 39 at-risk staff have already had applications accepted for voluntary redundancy, 32 have been “assimilated” into the new structure, and 27 were redeployed into other GLA posts.

The process is set to be concluded by the beginning of July.

After the consultation stage in April, the GLA accepted the trade union Unison’s alternative proposal for “ring fencing arrangements” –

scathing intervention on City Hall’s efficiency programme, suggesting it wll leave “key parts of the authority seriously understaffed.”

London regional secretary Sara Gorton told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “Job losses on this scale at the Greater London Authority are alarming and disappointing.

“These proposals will leave key parts of the authority seriously understaffed, and that will cause serious damage to public services for communities across London.

“UNISON has made clear its strong opposition to these changes and will to support the workers it represents who are affected.”

During the committee meeting, Green Party Assembly Member Caroline Russell asked Ms Harpley whether remaining staff would be required to take on an increased, and in some cases unsustainable, workload.

Ms Harpley said: “The new programs will have too be very efficient and effective in the way we plan to resource them…without putting unreasonable demands on teams that have been cut.”

She confirmed there would be an “extra

layer of oversight” on affected teams to ensure “people aren’t being overloaded.”

The scale of the job cuts was first outlined in the 2026/27 GLA Budget, which said that “up to £10 million per year will need to be found through wider organisational savings” to mitigate the loss of a “parachute payment” that was designed to soften the blow of losing EU funding post-Brexit.

Conservative Assembly Member Alessandro Georgiou criticised the Mayor for excluding his own office from the scope of job cuts.

He told the LDRS: “Sadiq Khans mayoral team has increased in size significant since he became Mayor yet his appointees are now immune from job cuts at City Hall. This is fundamentally unfair and will do nothing other than depress morale at City Hall.”

Questioned about why this was, Ms Harpley responded: “I’ve been very clear with staff from the very beginning, we had agreed with the Mayor’s Office where we would be seeking efficiencies from.

“We need to, in the light of financial constraints, make sure our resources are used most efficiently as possible

The UK’s all-time highest May temperature record was broken on Monday May 25 at Kew Gardens with a whopping 34.8C recorded and the heat is only set to continue.

It is the kind of weather where being near or in water is essential for many to get by, so we’ve compiled a list of top outdoor swimming spots for South Londoners to get some relief from the heat...

SURREY DOCKS FITNESS AND WATERSPORTS CENTRE

Swimmers can now go for a dip at London’s oldest riverside dock, Greenland Dock in Rotherhithe.

The dock, built in 1695-99, was introduced as an open water swimming spot in August 2024 as

part of Southwark Council’s Surrey Docks Fitness and Watersports Centre site.

If you want beautiful views of the capital’s skyline whilst you swim then this 300m swimming loop might be the spot for you at just £9 a pop.

Ranked London’s top outdoor swimming spot by Time Out earlier this year, Brockwell Lido is a favourite for many Londoners throughout the year, but especially when it gets hot.

The 50-metre lido first opened in 1937 and was built in an Art Deco style as part of London County Council’s initiative to bring “the seaside to the city”.

The unheated pool is the ideal summer location to go for a swim, top up on some sunrays and maybe even eat a few sourdough pizzas at the lido’s cafe.

After a £4 million revamp, Tooting Bec Lido is open again to the public this summer.

Tooting’s pool has been a local favourite since opening in 1906, with its multicoloured changing huts giving it an iconic look.

The largest outdoor freshwater pool in the UK, at just over 90m, it is frequented by swimmers at all times of the year.

There is a paddling pool for the kids and a cafe for any lunches or snacks to get you through the day.

RUSKIN PARK PADDLING POOL Opening over the bank holiday weekend, Ruskin Park Paddling Pool is ready to host families throughout the summer season.

TALL TALES AND COCKTAILS A new series of comedy rooted in real-life storytelling has arrived at The Glitch Theatre in Waterloo

By Evie Flynn THE COMEDY Night, Tall Tales and Cocktails, has just celebrated its fourth birthday and marked the occasion with a move to Waterloo.

A “tall tale” refers to exaggerated or unbelievable stories – and that’s exactly what audiences can expect at each show.

The concept was founded by comedian Steve Mayne, who wanted to take a different approach to stand-up, and the evening features little to no audience participation. “No one will be asked what their name is or what they do for a living,” he said. “It’s all about the stories being told.”

We went along to the opening night, and what a laugh it was.

From unbelievable comedy stories to moments that made the whole room

cringe, each act brought something completely different. Performances from Tom Dell, James Townsend, Steve Vertigo and Julia Holden had the audience constantly changing between bursts of laughter and second-hand embarrassment, all seamlessly held together by host Steve.

Steve, who grew up in East London, says the idea was inspired by his childhood memories of sitting in pub back rooms, listening to the “crazy stories” adults would share.

Drawing on his experience as a comic, he turned that inspiration into a long-running comedy night. Each event features four different acts, including some wellknown names from the industry, and has consistently received five-star reviews.

The names of the acts are not traditionally shared until just before the event. “We have had some huge comics

like Mark Thomas and Red Richardson,” Steve said. “We don’t share the lineup as we want people to come for the storytelling experience, rather than just the names.”

“I miss when people would go to the bar to talk to people,” Steve explained.

“This night is all about bringing the community together through storytellingcelebrating people’s similarities rather than highlighting their differences.”

After a successful residency at The Rosemary Branch Theatre in Islington, the well-loved event is heading south to Lower Marsh’s Glitch Theatre for a threemonth run.

A GINGER SEAL THAT BECAME A ‘LOCAL CELEBRITY’ IS FOUND DEAD

A RARE harbour seal with a distinctive orange tinge – which was often spotted on the beach in Rotherhithe, Greenwich and the O2 – has passed away.

Affectionately nicknamed ‘Marmalade’ for her distinctive colouring, the female seal was found dead on Thursday 14 May – but the cause of her death is unknown.

A farewell ceremony was held for the “funny, beautiful girl” on Sunday 16 May, organised by volunteers from the Thames Seal Watch.

Thames Seal Watch announced the news on Instagram on Thursday 14 May: “Our beautiful Marmalade was found dead yesterday evening.

“There is no obvious causes of death and up to when she was last seen, only days ago, she was in good shape.

“Unfortunately, an autopsy was unable to be performed, due to the time she had been in the water, so her death will remain a mystery.”

The group, who look after the welfare of seals on the Thames, estimate that Marmalade was around three years old – known as a ‘sub adult’.

She was also very rare and there are currently 599 Harbour Seals in the Thames Estuary, compared to nearly 3,000 Grey Seals.

Volunteers gathered at the Ship in Greenwich on Saturday (16 May) to throw flowers into the water at the beach she frequented.”

Linda Cook, a local Rotherhithe resident, said: “She became a bit of a celebrity, especially at Rotherhithe.

“She loved the attention from amazed passers-by and would always put on a show and pose for photos.”

Thames Seal Watch posted on Instagram: “Thank you Marmalade for bringing us together to celebrate you

and for jumpstarting the movement to educate the wider community and help protect our local seals.

“We don’t know what happened to Marmalade, but we know that she was thriving while this bunch was looking

Ten-year-old boy saves mum’s life

He called 999 after she suffered a stroke

A TEN-YEAR-OLD boy saved his mum’s life after calling 999 when she was suffering from a stroke and has now been awarded a London Ambulance Service certificate.

Isaiah was getting ready for football when his mum Sabrina suddenly started struggling to form words and collapsed at their home in Sydenham.

Sabrina, 36, said: “I was on the phone to my mum and I started slurring my words. My mum asked if I was having a stroke.”

Isaiah came into the bedroom and, despite the upsetting scene, managed to muster the courage to call 999.

Sabrina said: “I know he was overwhelmed and scared but he handled the situation with such grace.”

Isaiah then ran to let London Ambulance crews in when they arrived at the door and led them through to the bedroom where his mum had fallen.

Isaiah said: “I feel really proud for saving my mummy. When she stopped talking, I had to call London Ambulance otherwise she would have got worse. I was very worried and then I heard the sirens.”

Sabrina said the stroke was a ‘complete shock’ but through a change

of diet and exercise she has ‘been able to get back to where I should be’.

Isaiah was awarded a certificate at London Ambulance Service’s Waterloo Headquarters to recognise his bravery, where he thanked the paramedics and call handler for coming to their aid.

Paramedic Josh, from Bromley Ambulance Station, who was among those who responded, said: “Sabrina is still here smiling because of what Isaiah did. He remained very calm and told us exactly what happened to his mum.

“He was quite overwhelmed by the sirens, so we gave him some headphones so he could listen to music when we took them to hospital.

“We stayed with Isaiah until his father arrived. Isaiah just wanted to know that his mum was ok.”

Sabrina said: “I’m very proud that Isaiah has been recognised for his bravery and that he has used what I’ve taught him about calling 999 in an emergency. He felt really chuffed being rewarded with a certificate.”

She added: “The paramedics definitely inspired him and he’s eager to learn more about the ambulance service.”

Josh said it was an important lesson for all: “Parents should teach their children how to call 999, ensure they

know their address and listen to instructions given by the call handlers.

They will guide your children on what they need to do in an emergency.”

Symptoms of a stroke may include face weakness, arm weakness or speech problems and is more likely to happen to those who are older but can happen at any age.

It is a life-threatening emergency and members of the public should follow the FAST acronym which stands for: face, arms, speech and time to call 999.

Story follows the reality star as he lives with his end stage liver disease and receives support from specialists at the Camberwell hospital.

Last year, the 29-year-old revealed that he was expected to live five years without a transplant after a bout of flu last December flared up his liver

disease, which has been dormant in his body since he was born.

Matilda Guyatt is a live donor liver coordinator at King’s who features in the series, and she spoke about her role supporting people through the distressing period.

“We love seeing people’s lives change

for the better, and we see the huge impact that liver transplant surgery has on people’s lives,” she said.

Sam, who is the nephew of Real Housewives icon Lisa Vanderpump, is joined on-screen by his wife Alice as they navigate the wait for a transplant, highlighting the nationwide issue of

donation waitlists.

The two-part series will follow the star as he grapples with the procedure and decides whether to wait for a donor organ or to receive part of a relative’s liver.

Matilda added: “All patients, and their families, will experience a real roller-coaster of emotions, and we are here to help them with that, as well as the clinical and logistical components of getting ready for transplantation, recovering afterwards, and returning to a normal life.”

The Vanderpumps married sooner than expected in a pared-back ceremony while Sam was waiting for a transplant, and Alice was pregnant with their son, Archduke.

“Plan for the worst, hope for the best,” said Sam on the reality show.

The pair frequently upload informative videos to their social media, answering questions on the logistics of live donation.

King’s College Hospital has 16 transplant coordinators, who work with patients in the run up to surgery and provide follow up support.

Matilda said: “We will also follow patients up for years – we are here for transplant patients whenever they need us, be that four or forty years after their operation. This ongoing support is vital for them.”

Police were called at around 9:15pm to reports of a group fighting with knives before Giovanny was tragically pronounced dead under an hour later at 10:07pm.

The investigation revealed there had been a chase through a nearby alleyway before Giovanny was cornered and attacked, with a post-mortem examination finding the cause of death to be multiple sharp-force injuries.

Five men, aged between 19 and 22, were sentenced at the Old Bailey On Wednesday after being convicted of murder on Tuesday 14th April following an 11-week trial.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn investigation, thanked the people of Walworth in a statement released after the sentences were handed out for helping police put together ‘a timeline of what had happened that night’. Detectives had reviewed over 1,500 hours of CCTV footage to connect the five men to Giovannys murder.

Bryan Villada Hernandez was arrested at the scene and forensic examination of his clothing found Giovanny’s blood on his tracksuit and damage consistent with contact from a knife.

The court heard that messages recovered from Hernandez’s phone also showed discussions about destroying evidence and concerns about police activity.

Met detectives also found that a residential address on Langdale Close in Walworth was being used as a squat after reviewing over 1,500 hours of CCTV. Angel Gonzalez Angulo and Zozoro Mohamed Olivier Boizo fled the address after the attack and travelled by taxi to a

friend’s home.

CCTV captured Angulo changing clothing and carrying a bin bag, which prosecutors said was the ‘disposal of blood-stained items and weapons’.

Christian Batista Gonzalez managed to leave the UK but was arrested near Barcelona on 19 May last year and extradited back.

Joseph Jimenez fled London and was arrested over a year after the killing around 70 miles away in Chichester, West Sussex.

In a statement to the court, Mr Bedoya’s mother said the five attackers ‘took away his (Giovani’s) life in the most brutal of ways.’

She added: “My son was killed in a

country that I do not know, and I do not speak the language of. This put me in an extremely vulnerable position as I have had no choice but to rely on other people this entire last year.

“Every time my phone has rung from an overseas number, my heart skipped a beat and I would answer tentatively, in fear of hearing more bad news.

“I thank God and the whole police team who have put their heart and soul in the case of my son. I am grateful for all of the support from my liaison officer.

My life will not be long enough for me to be able to thank you.”

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn, who led the Met’s investigation, said: “Today’s sentences

show that those who commit vicious and brutal attacks will face significant, life-altering consequences.

“The group acted together during a sustained and extremely violent attack, chasing and killing Giovanny, showing brutality and reckless violence.”

Blackburn added: “This was a complex case, and I would like to thank the community of Walworth who supported our investigation and provided us with a timeline of what had happened that night.

“The group acted with no thought to what others would see or hear and I am truly grateful for all those who came forward and gave their harrowing accounts.”

Shocked bystanders – who watched behind a temporary metal fence – saw the three teenagers wrestle each other whilst waving large blades.

Three boys were arrested near the scene, while a fourth was arrested later on Sunday evening.

Two of the boys who were arrested were reported to have suffered injuries in the incident, which were not life-

threatening or life-changing.

The footage shows two hooded males, dressed in all black, swiping at each other with knives before one slips and falls to the ground.

A third male then enters the frame and appears to pin the teenager to the floor.

Moments later, a bystander runs towards the group and intervenes, helping to separate the teenagers and appears to bring the fight to an end.

The man can be heard shouting, “What are you doing? Stop it,” as he separates the boys.

The male who had been pinned then appears to get on an electric scooter and ride away.

The person filming the footage is doing so through a temporary metal fence and several bystanders appear to have watched the incident.

to X, was captioned: “This happened today 17/05/26 in Burgess Park, SE London, where I play football every Sunday morning.”

“The knife crime in London is alarming, the man who separated those boys deserves a medal, he saved a life”.

Police said four boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of offences including affray, causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

A spokesperson for Met Police said: “Police were called at around 12:30hrs on Sunday, 17 May to reports of an altercation in Burgess Park, Camberwell.

“Officers attended and searched the area with the assistance of the police helicopter.

“Four boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of offences including affray, causing grievous bodily

harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

“Three boys were arrested near the scene, while a fourth was arrested later on Sunday evening. All four boys remain in police custody. Two of the boys who were arrested were reported to have suffered injuries in the incident, which were not life-threatening or life-changing.

“One, a 17-year-old boy, self-presented at hospital for treatment to wounds and was discharged later that afternoon, following which he was arrested at a property in Southwark.

A LONDON bus driver, described as “a wonderful husband, father and grandfather”, has died after being assaulted on Battersea Bridge - as Unite call on Transport for London to take “immediate action” to ensure bus workers safety.

Sergei Krajev, a First Bus employee working on the 49 bus, was airlifted to St George’s Hospital after being found critically injured on the bridge just after midnight at around 00:30am on Monday, May 25.

The 64-year-old spent two days in intensive care before the Metropolitan Police confirmed he passed away on Tuesday 19 May. A 32-year-old man from Twickenham, has previously appeared in court charged with causing grievous bodily harm and was remanded in custody.

Police said a murder investigation has been launched and reported that an assault had happened on the pavement whilst the bus had been stationary at a stop.

Sergei’s family said in a statement: “We feel fortunate to have had such a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather in our lives. He was a thoughtful, tactful, and conscientious person who cared about those around him.

“In his role as a bus driver, he was punctual, reliable and willing to help.

He valued good relationships with his colleagues and approached his duties with care and dedication.

Sharon Graham, general secretary of trade union Unite, offered her condolences and said: “TFL needs to take immediate action to ensure the safety of all bus workers. No bus worker should be subjected to violence whilst carrying out their duties.”

Unite said that London bus driver do not currently receive training in how to deal with violence and diffuse similar situations despite TFL providing this for Underground staff.

Graham said: “Tfl and the bus companies must now swiftly introduce training for drivers on how to respond and deal with violent confrontations.”

But, Tfl have said that all bus drivers receive training on conflict awareness and avoidance. This was first included in a TfL-led two-day bus driver training course delivered to all bus drivers and has since been incorporated into all operator induction training.

Teen stabbed at what has been dubbed a ‘TikTok gathering’ A 17-YEAR-OLD boy suffered stab wounds and nine others were arrested at a “unauthorised gathering” of teenagers in Clapham Common last Friday (May 22).

Police were called after fighting broke out on Clapham Common at an alleged ‘music event’ that was promoted widely on the TikTok social media platform.

PECKHAM RYE STATION GETTING 1960s MAKEOVER

PECKHAM RYE station will be getting a 1960s makeover when the 1961 station canopy gets replicated this year.

Southwark Council has plans to imitate Peckham Rye station’s 1961 look as part of a series of improvements being brought to the station over the next 12 months.

Southwark’s Peckham Rye – one of South London’s busiest stations - will benefit from a package of improvements being delivered by Network Rail and Southern Railway -although these do not include a much-needed lift.

The changes are designed to reduce congestion, improve passenger flow and allow for future growth.

Andy Piper, Govia Thameslink Railway’s Railway Head of Gatwick and London Stations, said: “I’m looking forward to seeing these improvements at Peckham Rye take shape.

“We’ve heard from our customers just how much of a difference these changes will make, bringing huge benefits through making the station easier to travel through and with less congestion.”

A part of the station that previously held cash machines but was cordoned

off and hidden will be revealed for the first time in 30 years when work begins next month.

This ticket machine will go in this space, with additional station entrance doors and ticket gates to follow over the next year, along with foundations for a replica of the station canopy that was removed in 1961.

Additional train information screens will be added further along platforms 1 and 2, which should make it easier for crowds to move along the platform.

Andrew Wood, Network Rail’s senior commercial scheme sponsor, said: “These improvements at Peckham Rye will make a real difference for passengers, creating more space, easing congestion and making it quicker and easier to move through the station.

“This is an important first step in preparing the station for future growth while also enhancing the environment for the thousands of people who use it every day. I’d like to thank passengers for their patience while we carry out this work.”

Network Rail plans to widen narrow sections on platforms 3 and 4 and refurbish the platform canopies next year.

Southwark Council also plans to lay the surface of a new public square at the front of the station.

AIR QUALITY MEASUREMENT DISPLAY INSTALLED AT PECKHAM RYE STATION

AN AIR quality display has been set up at Peckham Rye station to monitor pollution levels in the area.

The instrument has been set up

by Imperial College London in collaboration with Southern and Thameslink.

The display shows how the air quality compares to the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards through red, amber, yellow and green LED lights.

It is updated with live data from an air quality model developed

by Imperial, which uses pollution measurements from monitoring stations across London.

It is part of the university’s AWAIR project, led by Imperial’s Environmental Research Group, to increase community awareness and understanding of air quality.

As part of the project, there are

already 15 displays at lampposts in Peckham, one in Peckham theatre and another in Dene Community Centre.

Located at the exit to Peckham Rye station, the display could be seen by up to six million people annually.

It will also supplement the other works that have been announced for the station.

Air Quality Technologist and AWAIR project lead at Imperial College London, Andrew Grieve, said: “Given how busy Peckham Rye station is, this could be one of the most looked-at air quality information displays in all of London. I’m so happy to have Southern and Thameslink’s support.

“Air pollution affects every single one of us, from our first breath to our last, from the youngest to the oldest. What the displays do is integrate air quality information into people’s daily lives in an easy and understandable way. They look up and it’s there. They don’t need to visit a website or download an app.

“If you have a health condition,

maybe this can help you plan for tomorrow because we have tomorrow’s forecast on there as well.

For everyone else, we hope that by showing what air quality is like, it can help build consensus for improving our air in the longer term.”

Southern and Thameslink’s head of environment and sustainability, Jason Brooker, said: “The World Health Organisation has identified poor air quality as a leading environmental risk to health, with nearly 99 per cent of the global population breathing air that exceeds the WHO safety limit.

“At Southern and Thameslink, we have worked with AWAIR and Imperial College London to provide a deeper understanding of the quality of air around this railway station and raise awareness about this vitally important issue.

“It’s part of our sustainability strategy to work with our communities as a responsible business. Together, we can build a sustainable future.”

RARE PUBLIC OPEN STUDIO WEEKEND Celebrating 20 years of Peckham’s Galleria, a revolutionary artist space

A FIRST of its kind, Peckham’s Galleria offers vital workspace for the capital’s artists at half the price of London’s average studio rent.

Birthed in 2006 as part of a project to provide affordable studio space, its resident artists will celebrate the development’s 20-year anniversary in a rare open studio weekend this June.

Painters Eva Bosch and Julian Sharples have worked from the Galleria since the opening of its doors two decades ago, and have summoned together the building’s diverse resident artists to display all of their work for the first time since 2019 in a behind-the-scenes open studios on the weekend of June 6 and 7 Galleria is operated by Acme, an artist’s charity that began in 1972 with the aim to encourage art production by helping to remove financial burdens - it now support 800 artists across 15 studios, often acquired in collaboration with developers through 100-plus year leases or property purchases.

It may be an endless source of creative inspiration, but London is a tricky city to live in as a full-time artist, with monthly rent on private studio spaces often soaring up to and beyond the £800 mark.

“It’s getting worse. I have trouble paying the rent. Before I had a job, but now that I am 100 per cent an artist I may not be able to keep the studio,” said 74-year-old Bosch, who worked four days a week as a Spanish teacher before noticing the detriment to her craft.

“It really, really affected my work. Now I am working at 100 per cent, though penniless, I realise how important it is to have the time and space. There’s a bill for everything - and I am not an exception,” she said.

Bosch has been making her prehistoricinspired paintings since graduating from the Royal College of Arts in 1986, using millennia-old media like iron oxide, animal fats and soapstone in tandem with more traditional oil paints.

Her newest painting, which was still wet as she spoke to the News, nods to a 26-thousand-year old figurine called the Venus of Brassempouy, which is one of the oldest representations of a human face and stands only 3cm high.

Galleria is part of a housing development on Pennack Road near Burgess park, and was built in partnership with Barratt Homes via the funding of Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts. This means that one half of the building is residential flats, with artist’s studios on the other.

“It was one of the first of its kind to be built, but also one of the last to be

built,” said Sharples, whose studio was decked out in bright canvases of food and scenery, alongside a curtain made of cell-membrane models and a chalkboard where he conducts his online maths and science classes.

“I love it, I love it here. It’s like my sanctuary,” said sculptor Helen Barff, who has worked in South East London since the beginnings of her career in Goldsmiths and Camberwell School of Art. “You’re right next to each other,” she said, adding: “when residents came in, they were like, oh, we see you working!”

The open studios will get artists mingling with their neighbours and exhibiting their work, but visitors can also buy the original artworks at accessible prices, sometimes at half the cost of what they would sell for in a commercial gallery.

Sculptor Sandra Lane said: “It is about being sociable and opening up and meeting people. It is about the pressure of making your studio look good and making your work visible!”

A lot of the artists expressed how thankful they were for the development’s double-glazed windows - compared with studios based in old industrial units with high windows and low insulation, Galleria’s artists can work warmly during the winter.

“My last studio was freezing and I couldn’t go there in the winter. When I moved in I was pregnant and I wanted a studio where I could bring my baby.

There are some spaces you couldn’t safely take a child to,” said Barff, who has worked in Galleria for 16 years.

There is high demand for space like this. All of Acme’s studios are occupied and some have faced seven-year-long waiting lists, despite recently purchasing a former ship propeller factory that had been used by 180 artists since 1990, but

developers had threatened to buy it up.

“It changed my life when I got the artist residency. I was living in a small flat and other spaces in London cost more than double,” said Isa Suarez, a Basque performer and composer who is currently collaborating with refugees from the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers on a music project inspired by water.

“I collect sound recordings from all over the world. They are a metaphor to show that water and rivers are free, they ebb and flow. Migrants come from all over the world and I am making a link with that. Music is a way of connecting with different cultures,” she said.

For theatre producer and director Kaï Sargeant, who has worked with the Young Vic and was associate director of Theatre Peckham, Galleria is their first studio and they say that this space has skyrocketed their work. .

They said: “The explosion of new, young, disabled-led, queer-led, black-led work is diminishing. And I don’t want to be part of a sector that is dying. I want to be innovative and ‘D.I.Y’ in my approach.

“Now that there are more Green party councillors in Southwark, I am curious to see whether there will be campaigns for affordable artist spaces.

“How can we work with developers to provide purpose built artist’s space like this, as opposed to putting artists on short-term contracts, on sublets and on insecure tenures, which mirrors how the housing market works.

“Until then, artists are going to be living in precarity,” they said.

FLAT IRON TO OPEN FIRST RESTAURANT IN CLAPHAM Its speciality, the flat iron steak, is a cut sourced from the feather blade and is renowned for its flavour and tenderness.

The menu also features daily Wagyu specials and a burger with beef from the Flat Iron herd in Thirsk, Yorkshire.

Sides include beef dripping chips, crispy bone marrow mash, truffled macaroni cheese and creamed spinach.

“Many years ago, there was a butcher’s shop (Moens, now a few doors down), on this site that my family would visit regularly, so to be bringing the beef back has extra meaning. We’ll create something special for this new restaurant to mark the occasion, after all it is going to be my new local.

“We are delighted to soon be part of Clapham’s evolution by joining the thriving local hospitality scene and by serving remarkable steak to all Claphamites.”

A to B, which will run at Soho Theatre between June 12 and July 3, was written

by British playwright Tia-Renee Mullings and stars Sheyi Cole and Zakkiyah Dean.

Cole and Dean were noted for their performances in the BBC’s Small Axe, which shines a light on London’s West Indian communities in the 1960s, ‘70s and

‘80s.

Now they will star side by side in Mullings’ Black British romcom as two characters set up on a blind date by friends.

Mullings said: “I wrote A to B out of a desire for more Black British love stories and my love for spoken word.”

Mullings continued: “The play is about two people trying to find love and each other in a world that keeps getting in the way, but it’s also my love letter to South London and to the textures of British-Jamaican life and community that coloured my upbringing.

“In today’s social media-dominated dating landscape, where so much of how we’re seen is curated and controlled, the play is really a poetic exploration of what it means to be seen and loved as a young Black person.”

Burglary at celebrity chef José Pizarro’s Bermondsey Street bar

By Flora Bigham A CELEBRITY chef took to social media this week after his tapas bar on Bermondsey Street was burgled for the fourth time in two years.

Video footage shared by the celebrated Spanish chef Jose Pizarro shows the perpetrator smashing the glass door in the early hours of the morning.

What appeared to be a hooded man wearing a backpack broke into José Tapas Bar at around 05.42am on Saturday May 16.

The CCTV footage shows the culprit smashing the bar’s glass door. He then appears to take bottles from behind the counter.

This is the fourth burglary in the last two years, José wrote on his Instagram post hours after the break-in. The chef who makes regular appearances on TV cookery programmes like BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch brunch added that his team have “had their phones stolen on the way home after work.”

José moved to London 27 years ago and has made the up-market his home with three outlets on the trendy street, but in the post he was clearly frustrated, writing: “Behind the scenes our staff are working hard, trying their best, supporting

families, paying bills. We pay more tax than ever before - huge amounts in tax, work endless hours, to create jobs and try to build good places for our communities… while the streets around us become dirtier and less safe by the day, and it often feels like the system protects the criminals and thieves more than the people trying to do the right thing.

“It’s all upside down. It breaks my heart that so many small businesses in London are going through this again and again.”

But while disappointed by the break-in, José ended his post with “thankfully nobody was hurt today and thanks to our great team we will open as normal this weekend.”

A spokesperson for the Met said: “We recognise the impact that burglaries have on local businesses, and understand how distressing these incidents are for staff and our communities.

“Officers arrived six minutes after the first report but the suspect had already left the scene. Enquiries, including reviewing CCTV footage, are ongoing but we are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and help police.

“In Southwark, the number of burglary offences has dropped by six per cent in the last year as officers work hard to drive down neighbourhood crime.”

The break-in is made all the worse as it coincides with the chef celebrating the 15th anniversary of José Tapas Bar on Bermondsey Street. He also owns Pizarro and in 2024 opened his third restaurant Lolo on Bermondsey Street. Lolo is his childhood nickname.

Celebrations for the anniversary include ‘Tapas Mile’ where locals are being encouraged to visit all three of his kitchens on Bermondsey Street.

He has created new additions to the menu and is reviving classic dishes from the past 15 years.

Alongside his three Bermondsey Street restaurants, he runs The Swan Inn in Esher, Keeper’s House at the Royal Academy of Arts, and restaurants in Spain and Abu Dhabi.

He has published eight cookbooks and co-founded Spanish food brand Brindisa.

Despite the break-in he recently told us in an interview: “London has truly become my home, and I feel incredibly proud and grateful for everything this city has given me, the chance to grow, to build something of my own, and to share the food and culture I love”.

‘IT BREAKS MY HEART’

By Evie Flynn A REWARD of up to £20,000 has been offered by Crimestoppers for information that could help the police investigating the murder of Keanu Taylor.

The incident occurred just after 1am on Saturday 2 May, after reports that shots had been fired from a vehicle into a large social gathering on Coldharbour Lane, which runs from Camberwell to Brixton.

The drive by shooting, police said, ‘could easily have resulted in several fatalities’. In total four victims – including a pensioner – suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.

Keanu, aged just 25, sadly died of his injuries two days later on Monday 4 May. In a tribute, his family, who are being supported by specialist officers, said: “Keanu was a loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson and friend. He was loved by everyone and his smile would light up a room.

“Keanu had the world at his feet, and he’s left a huge hole in our family, our hearts are absolutely broken.”

Two weeks on from the fatal shooting, Crimestoppers have offered a reward of up to £20,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of his killers.

Detective Chief Inspector Allam Bhangoo, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was an appalling and indiscriminate attack which could easily have resulted in several fatalities.

“The people who killed Keanu are dangerous criminals – it is imperative for the safety of our community that

they are taken off the streets.

“My team are working tirelessly as we fight to bring those responsible to justice. We know that lots of people were in the area and if you have any information or footage that could help our investigation, it is extremely important that you come forward and talk to us.”

Officers are particularly keen to see mobile phone video or dashcam footage of the incident.

The three other victims – aged 21, 47 and 70 – were treated at hospital but their injuries were deemed not lifethreatening or life-changing.

Alexa Loukas, Regional Manager for London at the charity Crimestoppers, said: “This was a senseless and deeply shocking act of violence that has devastated a young man’s family and left a whole community shaken.

“We are offering this reward because we believe there are people who have vital information, people who want to do the right thing for their community, but don’t want to speak to the police or have to give a statement.

“Crimestoppers is totally independent of the Police, we’re simply here to provide a safe and completely anonymous way to speak up. Your information could be the missing piece that helps bring those responsible to justice and give Keanu’s family the answers they desperately deserve.”

Anyone with information or footage that could assist police is urged to contact 101, quoting CAD 557/2May. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

SOUTHWARK ONLY SOUTH LONDON COUNCIL WITH NO DECISION MADE ON WHO IS RUNNING THE BOROUGH ‘IT IS TIME FOR THE LIB DEMS TO MAKE THEIR MIND UP’

By Frankie Hill SOUTHWARK IS the only borough in South London which, nearly three weeks on from the local elections, still has not told residents who will be running the council.

However, this all could change this evening (Thursday, May 28th) when an announcement will be made at a full meeting of the council in Tooley Street, just four days short of a legal deadline.

The most likely outcome was initially thought to be a Labour-Liberal Democrat coalition, but that is not a given, and some are still speculating that it could go Green Lib Dem. In the unlikely event that no agreement is reached by the meeting, it is understood that councillors could vote to adjourn the decision, to allow further talks, although all parties will now be feeling the pressure to come to an agreement.

Speculation surrounding what the council will look like has intensified after a week-long delay in its announcement.

The initial deadline came and went last Thursday, as well as a venue change from the prestigious Southwark Cathedral to the council’s own Tooley Street offices.

With the Greens now having 22 seats and Labour 29, the Liberal Democrats have become kingmakers, possessing an essential 12 seats required for either party to hold a 32 seat working majority.

The leader of the Liberal Democrats, Cllr Victor Chamberlain, has remained tight-lipped over which way he will swing. Sources have told us both the new Green leader Cllr James McAsh and Labour leader Sarah King, who became Southwark Council leader after a controversial party election process, were both waiting on Cllr Chamberlain to make up his mind.

The Labour Party’s central office would have to agree a coalition and the idea that they would allow Cllr King make a deal with Cllr McAsh is thought extremely unlikely. McAsh left the Southwark Labour Party for the Greens seven months ago, after his victory in the council’s leadership election was overturned by the central Labour Party. He and three other Labour councillors went Green and by adding another 18 seats to that tally in this election they have become the second largest party in Southwark and a real political force across London, taking control of two boroughs outright.

The Southwark Lib Dems might be in third position, but they will for the first time since running the council 16 years ago be looking to broker a deal for their manifesto pledges to become actual council policy.

The Lib Dems ran Southwark from 2002 to 2010, but during those eight years they never had overall control, forming minority administrations and coalitions.

This time if they are in power with either Labour or the Greens they will be very much the junior partner, so the question is what is it Cllr Chamberlain is not willing to comprise on.

He refused to give us a comment on who he would go into partnership with ahead of Thursday’s announcement, as have Cllr King and Cllr McAsh, telling us: “Residents voted for change particularly on crime, housing and the way the council listens to communities. With no party now in overall control, our focus is on securing the best possible outcome for Southwark residents and working constructively with others to deliver that change.”

In 2015 Labour stormed to victory under Cllr Peter John with a promise of building 11,000 new, genuinely affordable council homes across the borough by 2043. This it seems was the vote swinging issue. Eleven years on and affordable houses remains the single most important issue in the borough. Most councillors and candidates interviewed agreed that the hope of getting anywhere close to building this amount of homes remained their top priority.

This paper has constantly tried to get a grip on the figures to see how many of the 11,000 have been built and in an article last year found just 2,145 homes had been fully finished and occupied. There were another 915 under construction, bringing the total up to 3,060. Whoever takes over control of the council will want to beat that record, with 8,000 needed in the next 17 years to hit target.

In a set of exclusive interviews with the us, candidates from all parties outlined their plans for housing in Southwark.

Interestingly, the Lib Dems campaigned on a platform of wanting to increase the 35% affordable housing rule to 50% on public land, whilst also wanting to introduce new roles in the council including a housing tsar to challenge developers not sticking to council targets.

Given that all three parties welcomed the news last week of the planning inspectorate to turn down the

redevelopment of the Aylesham Centre in Peckham, perhaps an agreement on this issue might be reached locally. However, both the Labour Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan and Labour’s Housing Minister Steve Reed have agreed to drop affordable housing targets for developers from 35% to just 20% and the Canada Water masterplan was recently approved with just 11%.

Another Lib Dem pledge Cllr Chamberlain might want approved is his party’s plan for a tram for the Old Kent Road - as many as 20,000 homes are dependent on the building of the Bakerloo Line Extension, but at an estimated cost of eye watering £8.6 billion. This can only be achieved with government back and in the last two budgets Chancellor Rachel Reeves has made not mention of backing it. If the Lib Dems can be seen to be responsible for a tram while the extension stalls it could be a big win with local voters in four years’ time and one the Greens could approve of if they are the coalition partner.

When approached for comment on the progression of negotiations, Cllr McAsh kept quiet, only saying: “Following our historic success in the election this month, the Southwark Green Group’s priority is to deliver as much as we can of our manifesto. We have reached out to the other two political Groups represented on the Council and will seek to reach an agreement that reflects the priorities of Southwark residents, in time for Council Assembly” Southwark Labour gave no comment.

Elsewhere in South London, the Conservatives held Bromley and Bexley; and have taken back Wandsworth after a deal with an independent councillor.

In Croydon the directly elected Tory Mayor Jason Perry has been left running a minority Conservative administration, with the Labour party having 30 seats to the Conservatives 28.

Labour has retained overall control of just two boroughs - Greenwich and Merton.

The Liberal Democrats kept hold of

Sutton, Kingston and Richmond UponThames.

While, under a newly struck coalition deal with the Liberal Democrats the Leader of the Lambeth Green Group, Cllr Martin Abrams, was set to be elected as council leader on Wednesday evening (May 27), as we were going to press.

He is one of many Labour councillors to defect, including the new Mayor of Lewisham, who is now running South London’s first Green council with an overall majority.

In Lambeth the Green Party’s majority is anything but stable. One of the party’s councillors has already resigned while a second has declined her seat, meaning there will be two by-elections which could even result in another leader being installed. With two seats up in the air the Greens have 27, Labour 26 and the Liberal Democrats 8.

WE DESERVE A DECISION TODAY ON WHO IS GOING TO RUN SOUTHWARK COUNCIL

S

outhwark has the somewhat dubious honour of being the only south London borough yet to decide who will run it - although by the time you read this, the white smoke could have fluttered from the chimney to announce a new administration.

For three weeks Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens have been locked in intense negotiations about which two parties are best placed to run the administration, and which of each party’s manifesto pledges can be included in a coalition council’s agenda.

While the three local party leaders have been commendably tight-lipped, we understand at this paper that the Liberal Democrats have been happy to take their time, concerned with finding an outcome that best suits their objectives, and knowing that a partnership between Labour and the Greens is extremely unlikely - giving Lib Dem leader Victor Chamberlain the kingmaker role.

Labour leader Sarah King and newly installed Green leader James McAsh would make strange political bedfellows - given the fallout from the Labour leadership election in 2025 - with McAsh removed as leader after just a week by Labour high command due to a technicality, and King then winning a subsequent second ballot. The Greens must have known that making McAsh leader would almost preclude them from making a deal with Southwark Labour, as it would re-open all the wounds, barely healed as they are.

Of course, the considerations are not just confined to a local level - all three parties will be taking instruction from their national executives - with Labour and the Greens wary of doing too many deals as they position themselves as the main opposition to Reform and the Tories.

So all this to say - anything can still happen.

It seems unlikely that today’s council meeting will end with an adjournment for further discussions to take place, as all the parties must be aware that a respectful period of contemplation and negotiation is probably now at an end. Residents cannot wait and wait for the wrangling to end - decisions need to be made, an agenda and vision set out and put into practice by the council’s officers.

Do not be totally surprised if the Liberal Democrats and the Greens announce they have struck a deal.

It may prove more politically astute for the Lib Dems to go into partnership with a party that hasn’t yet been subjected to scrutiny in this borough - consequently with less baggage, more room for manifesto manoeuvring and the chance to present it as a fresh start.

FROM CANADA TO CLAPHAM TO CANADA HOUSE

Lucy goes back a long way with Clapham and its people, having lived there twice: ‘The first time was in the 1990s between the Commons, and I was eager to return,’ she says. This time, the artist is in a house just off Clapham West Side, with enough space to construct a studio, and where she can often be seen walking on one of the Commons.

Between 2020-23, Lucy worked on a major collaboration with Southampton City Art Gallery - ‘Portraits of Inspiration’.

It was a community project that, during her research, she uncovered the hidden contribution that LGBTIQ+ artists have made to our collective artistic heritage.

She tells me, ‘Many of these artists led difficult lives and struggled because of their sexuality, unable to portray openly subject matter of meaning for them.’

For that project, Lucy invited the local community to paint a portrait of an LGBTQ+ person they found inspiring.

The 323 individual paintings formed two massive, collaborative artworks, reinforcing the message that LGBTQ+ progress is a collective effort by everyone.

ARTIST AND Clapham resident Lucy Ash has gone from working with local communities to a commission in Hampshire, and has now landed a major solo show in Trafalgar Square this summer, an interesting journey that I wanted to follow up, writes Michael Holland.

The artist explained her work: ‘What interests me is painting people who have changed how we see ourselves, each other and the world in which we live. Like the people I’ve chosen to represent – most often abstractly – I focus on themes of social justice, love and loss. I trained in sculpture and spent 15 years working in animation. These two visual approaches to time and space continue to inform my practice as a painter.’

The ‘Portraits of Inspiration’ project has now led on to another major commission - Invisible Portraits - from the Canada

Gallery in Trafalgar Square. I asked her about it: ‘At the centre of the exhibition is a series of works focusing on the death of Ian Baynham, following a homophobic assault in Trafalgar Square on 25th September 2009. Canada Gallery’s location, combined with the theme of Invisible Portraits, provides an opportunity to remember Ian Baynham and the victims of similar hate crimes and to celebrate the LGBTIQ+ community during Pride Month.’

Since 2010, when Ian’s sister, Jen, became Lucy’s creative collaborator, Lucy has ‘continued to explore themes of loss

and absence and brought in love as their counterbalance.’

Lucy noticed something very special about the work and the venue: ‘There is an amazing synchronicity between the thinking behind Invisible Portraits and the inspiration for Mil Veces un Instante

by Mexican artist Teresa Margolles on the Fourth Plinth. Her sculpture is made from hundreds of plaster casts of trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals living in London, Mexico City and Juárez.’

For this exhibition, Lucy has done further

formative for me,’ she says. Many of the staff there were performers, and Kerry got to see all the shows. ‘I’d sneak in and watch the actors warming up. It was a totally new world, totally magic,’ she adds with the excitement she must have felt as a young woman, seeing theatre’s fascinating world backstage for the first time.

When she began her drama degree at Kingston University, she helped with some friends’ theatre company and did work as a background artist or extra. One highlight from that time was a role as Q’s lab assistant in the Bond classic, Skyfall.

‘It was an amazing experience. We shot our scenes over a week at Pinewood, and being so young and watching people work at such a high level was fascinating for me. Watching Daniel Craig warm up before a shot was something else!

With all the skills and experience acquired over time, Kerry also turned her hand to writing. ‘I’ve done a load of new writing in the London fringe scene and at the Edinburgh Fringe. Shakespeare, stand-up, bonkers comedy shows with my theatre company Purple Ostrich Productions - we did comedy lectures on tours around the UK and Denmark!’

That was an impressive body of work.

But there was more.

‘I’ve been on TV in King Gary (BBC) and Casualty.’ And there is more, so much more.

Just a quick scan of Kerry’s socials shows a woman who has worked hard all her adult life to reach the highs she aims for. She has always made her own luck with nothing falling into her lap.

And now Kerry Fitzgerald, proud Bermondsey Girl, is in Man Baby. A role she won after auditioning via self-tape: ‘You read a lot of scripts as a working actor, and every so often one really hits you... This was one of those. It made me properly laugh. So it was very exciting to land the job.’

I asked for a summary: ‘Man Baby is an absurd comedy about a man called David who finds out he’s going to be a dad, and falls apart - literally. Divian Ladwa (Detectorists, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Lion) is David and he is bloody hilarious. As much as it’s a mad comedy, totally surreal in many places, it’s also a really beautiful exploration of male mental health around becoming a father. People have really related to it.’

Was the filming enjoyable? ‘Oh, totally!

It’s an indie feature, which means a smaller cast and crew, so we all really got to know each other. We spent weeks eating, filming, and chilling together. Lots of us have stayed in touch. It was great getting together for the premiere a few weeks ago. We opened the Loco film festival at the Ritzy in Brixton and afterwards did some banging karaoke at Paddy’s Yard next door. There are videos somewhere.’

What’s happening with the film now?

‘This film has been a labour of love for the director Philip Hardy, and the lead producer Syd Heather. It’s their debut feature. We’re delighted to have a short run of the film coming up at the Lumiere Romford in June, and I think the team are talking to other festivals and cinemas for other screenings. The audiences have been great, so I think their goal is to keep running in cinemas and then get a digital release so that my Irish cousins can watch it. There are literally thousands of them!’

What will you be doing next?

‘In June I’ll be taking part in All The Rage at Theatre Deli, a very different project! It’s an immersive response to the Epstein files. Led

by Rebecca Lenkeiwicz, about 70 female and non-binary writers are coming together to make it and it’s going to be really powerful.’

I should have asked Kerry if she will ever play Juliet again…

research into her Canadian heritage and added portraits of two Canadian poets, John McCrae and Elsa Gidlow, along with portraits of war poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. The artist considers the “necessary invisibility” of gay men during the First World War and how private identities were suppressed. The exhibition’s location lends even greater resonance. Situated in Trafalgar Square and in close proximity to Whitehall and the Cenotaph, it draws a direct line between personal and public acts of remembrance.

To finish off, I asked the artist what the message is she hopes to send with this exhibition?

‘Hope and healing require us to come together in equality with all our differences.

Visitors have the opportunity to add their own ‘Portrait of Inspiration’ and stand together in solidarity to celebrate the international LGBTIQ+ community and remember our shared experiences of discrimination. The exhibition offers a different perspective on the violence and death that clog the headlines.’

From Bermondsey to Bond Girl

Kerry enjoyed school, progressing through the years at Eveline Lowe School, Bacons College, then City of London Academy. It was at Eveline Lowe when she knew she wanted to be an actor: ‘I played Juliet in a school play when I was about six,’ she recalls, half-laughing, ‘and forgot to kill myself. From that moment on, I was hooked.’

Through working hard, Kerry got a scholarship to train at the esteemed Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, which meant a journey to the opposite side of London, but that didn’t stop her: ‘I had to get the 168 bus, the full journey end to end - Old Kent Road to Hampstead Heath.’

While Kerry studied her craft, she picked up skills and experience at Shakespeare’s Globe. ‘It was really

KERRY FITZGERALD was born in Guy’s Hospital, but it was no easy time for mother and child: ‘My mum was ill with a really rare autoimmune disease, and there was basically one doctor in the country who could treat her - thankfully, he happened to work down the road from where we lived.’ And that was in the Old Kent Road, where Kerry’s life got better and better from that stressful beginning, and she is now promoting a new film she is in, writes Michael Holland...

DID YOU know that the infamous Super Bowl halftime show incident between Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson was only on the TV for nine-sixteenths of a second?

That is how long Jackson’s breast, exposed (without consent) by Timberlake ripping off the top of her bustier, appeared on screen, writes Melina Block.

But this fraction of a second marred the next two decades of Jackson’s career, as Timberlake became ever more successful. This is the starting point for Brixton House’s new production by Paula Varjack and devised alongside Pauline Mayers, Julienne Doko, Chia Phoenix and Endy McKay. Nine Sixteenths combines the personal, the political and the pop culture, producing a thoughtful exploration of enduring the media as a Black woman.

A mix of nostalgic moments for the MTV generation, deep dives into the media industry’s nefarious figures and a reflection on the humans at the heart of it all define this show — this and Janet Jackson. While it is overall

incredibly moving and vulnerable, there are moments which verge slightly on the self-indulgent side, interrupting the otherwise dynamic flow of the piece.

Nine Sixteenths is at its strongest when physical theatre and technology combine to portray right-wing media overlords’ insidious grip on society and culture.

It is genuinely chilling at points, with the sharp ensemble connecting the dots between the defining moments of the new millennium which have ultimately landed us in times that, for the last five years or so, have been repeatedly referred to as unprecedented.

But at its heart, this is a touching show about resilience, strength and power — as well as a reminder to not blindly follow the whims of outof-touch media and tech moguls — or afford them any more power than they already have.

A show about resilience, strength and power

For Mother Courage, hope is not redemptive but persistently cruel FOR NEARLY thirty years, the open-air theatre at Shakespeare’s Globe has almost exclusively staged Shakespeare’s works. But this summer, Mother Courage and Her Children is the second nonShakespeare play to be staged outdoors in their modern history – after last year’s The Crucible – marking a deliberate shift in the theatre’s programming and artistic direction, writes Frankie Jenner.

As war rages, Mother Courage drags her rickety cart through a wasteland stripped bare by greed and conflict. “War is a huge, spluttering, money-making machine” – and Mother Courage is a whore for war – selling chickens, condoms, guns, ammunition, and even sex. Her relentless entrepreneurialism means she’ll sell whatever’s left of humanity to keep herself and her three children alive.

When Brecht wrote Mother Courage in 1939, he was developing the concept of Episches Theatre (Epic Theatre) – the belief that if you can deliver information clearly and allow audiences to experience and consider it, then theatre can produce the

conditions for social change. It was in this context that Brecht developed his theory of Verfremdungseffekt (unfortunately, spelt incorrectly in the programme) – which has various interpretations, including to make something strange, to alienate, or to distance. Brecht wanted to make audiences uncomfortable, restless – so that audiences would leave the theatre and start asking questions about why things are the way they are, and begin challenging these accepted norms and structures.

Whilst Anna Jordan’s translation resists anchoring itself to any specific conflict, it nonetheless alludes to many of the wars and genocides that we bear witness to today – whether through references to military drones, a makeshift refugee camp, or characters haggling in ‘sheks’ (as opposed to ‘thalers’). In this explicitly antiwar play, which addresses the devastating impact of war on human beings, I found it a bizarre choice that the programme features a photograph from a photographer who is a Pride Fellow of ‘Zioness’ – a movement that describes itself as “unapologetically Zionist”. Perhaps a little more thought

should have been put into the selection of images in the programme.

This aside, Nadine Higgin delivered the opening night’s standout performance as Yvette – with such tenacious energy, she commanded the stage with her kneehigh red boots and sang with a fullness that the Globe’s open stage is built for.

Likewise, Michelle Terry, Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, was fierce and brazen as Mother Courage – able to carry the full weight and tragedy of the central character’s role whilst also managing to undercut this with humour and wit.

Despite its contradictions, the production found its truest register in its depiction of hope – that, for Mother Courage, is not redemptive but persistently cruel. It keeps her going until it ultimately destroys her.

To stop pulling her wagon would mean she must confront what it cost her to keep going – a truth she refuses to bear.

His use of colour to create form is apparent in his paintings of Saaremaa and Vilsandi islands in the Baltic Sea off the west coast of Estonia. Sea Kale on a pebble beach at Saaremaa illustrates an abundance of robust, hardy plants bathed in light.

Contemporary artist Kristina Öllek’s installations in the gallery’s mausoleum build on Mägi’s seascapes. A string of translucent salt panels highlighting oxygen-depleted dead zones in the Baltic Sea hang in the circular crypt. Green and

yellow panes illustrate the toxic algae bloom which has developed in the sea through excessive nutrients.

Mägi’s work towards the end of his life, when he was struggling with mental illness, has a dramatic quality, with foliage, grasses and skies in bold primary colours and tumultuous clouds. The paintings hint at his inner turmoil and struggle with illness and depression.

He died when he was just 46 after being admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Tartu, following a bout of psychotic episodes. Yet he achieved a lot in his life, setting up Estonia’s first higher artistic education college, the Pallas Art School in 1919. He lived in Paris for several years,

joining the Beehive colony of artists which included Marc Chagall, Amedeo Modigliani and Diego Rivera. In his home country, Mägi is considered the greatest Estonian artist of his generation.

Kathleen Soriano’s curation insightfully charts his journey from the Norwegian landscapes to commissioned portraits.

This is a rare chance to see over 60 of his works, showing the influences of Cubism and German Expressionism on a largely self-taught artist who maintained an independent approach.

The greatest Estonian artist of his generation

UNLIKE FELLOW European artists, Estonian Konrad Mägi did not have the luxury of indulging in a ‘grand tour’ viewing Parisian avant-garde works nor the classical art of Italy.

Instead, the former furniture factory worker went to Norway in the summer of 1908 with his friend Aleksander Tassa, writes Barbara Buchanan.

They took their brushes, sketch pads, a violin, and had just five krone (£4), between them. With nowhere to stay, they camped out in the forests, surviving on blueberries. Despite their tough circumstances, the Norwegian landscape ignited Mägi’s spirituality and a lifelong

homage to nature.

Born in 1878, he lived through the Russian Revolution of 1905 and the birth of an independent Estonia in 1918.

With art the property of the elite, when Mägi was young, there were few public exhibitions. However, he still developed a thirst for it and took advantage of his time at St Petersburg’s Stieglitz Art School to study symbolists such as Mikhail Vrubel.

Mägi’s work doesn’t give exact dates nor locations to his work as he was more interested in rhythms, structures, and the forces that make up the essence of things and phenomena. Despite his radical leftist views in his youth, he became interested in yoga, Buddhism,

BROCKLEY MAX FESTIVAL BRINGS MUSIC, ART AND COMEDY TO LEWISHAM

The arts festival spans nine days across Brockley, Ladywell, Crofton Park and Honor Oak from Friday 29 May to Saturday 6 June.

Brockley Max is now in its 25th year and there will be over 90 events on offer from poetry, live music, art exhibitions, comedy, literature and more. Highlights include an outdoor show in the Fox & Firkin on Sunday 31 May, with Theon Cross headlining.

There will also be free-to-attend exhibitions running throughout the duration of the festival, focusing on memories of South

East London, nature and art. On the final day (Saturday 6 June), head to Hilly Fields for ‘Max in the Park’. The all-day festival will feature a music stage, kids’ creative workshops, storytelling, craft fairs, food stalls and two bars.

A CLASSICAL MUSIC PERFORMANCE OF ALICE IN WONDERLAND FOR KIDS IN BLACKHEATH

A performance of Alice and Wonderland is heading to the Conservatoire in Blackheath on Sunday 31 May – designed to introduce school age children to classical music at an early age. Mairéad Sheerin will be narrating the story and singing, Klio Blonz will be on the flute and Grace Mo will be on piano. KIDS CAN TAKE PART IN A FREE OUTDOOR THEATRE SHOW IN SYDENHAM THIS MAY HALF TERM Sydenham-based theatre company Spontaneous Productions are hosting kids dancing and drama workshops on Friday 29 May before performing a one-off outdoor show in front of their families the next day (Saturday 30 May). The children will take part in a production of ‘The Pied Piper of Sydenhamelin’ and use the skills they learnt in the workshops on

the Friday to bring the story to life.

The main roles in the play will be performed by professional actors, who will teach children how to mice, sing and dance. The performance will take place the on the green space behind Sydenham Library at Home Park. The event is free of charge but donations to the theatre company are welcome.

Severndroog Castle and Tom Toal Comedy are launching a ‘Comedy at The Castle in the Woods’ in Shooter’s Hill on Thursday 4th June. The evening will be hosted in the courtyard at Severndroog Castle, a Gothic tower on Shooter’s Hill. The event will be hosted by a range of top comedians, including Tom Toal, Mark Simmons, Eleanor Tiernan and Dominic Holland.

MR POMEROY’S MAGNIFICENT GIFT

By Debra Gosling THIS IS a very rare photo of Long Lane Recreation Ground in Bermondsey after its completion in 1896.

Before I elaborate, look closely at the figures to the left of that magnificent drinking fountain. They all look pretty desolate and miserable - but this was in a time when Long Lane was a povertystricken area of Bermondsey. Look closer and be shocked by what you see. The boy in the wheelbarrow cart is disabled - he has a malformed bare foot.

And notice the man and the other boys are wrapped up with hats, scarves, socks and coats, yet the disabled boy is dressed in merely a shirt. Look closer still and you can see snow on the brickwork and ice on the manhole cover. What is this poor boy doing out in the cold dressed so inappropriately?! He looks so sad. At best this must be child neglect in a harsh world that didn’t care. Families looked on in despair at a child that could not go out to work and earn his keep. What an unhappy life he must have had, when only the workhouse or a special school were his options.

Back to the fountain. This park was laid out on top of the old Quaker Friends

burial ground as a recreation space for children. The Friends had owned this piece of land since the seventeenth century, when they were persecuted and driven out of many places. The Quakers of Horselydown were particularly persecuted for their beliefs and banned from local churches and buildings, so they established their own burial ground here for their brethren to lie in peace. It was eventually sold off to Bermondsey Borough Council who made it into a park.

It opened on the Thursday afternoon of 14th May 1896 to much fanfare and celebration. All the great and the good of Bermondsey were there, including Colonel Samuel Bourne Bevington (whose father is buried here), Augustus Shand and Ambrose Pomeroy, along with the clergy and local businessmen.

Representatives from the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association were also there, after they had stumped up £150 towards the purchase of the graveyard as well as throwing in some benches for free. This was late Victorian times when all around was industry and pollution, where many kids died in infancy from all sorts of diseases, with TB and diphtheria being rife. To have a space created especially for them with trees and play equipment was divine.

Ambrose Pomeroy ©Lewisham Libraries Ambrose Pomeroy (1851-1926), was a local draper who had travelled up from Cornwall to set up business in Bermondsey New Road (around the corner from the park). He and his brother Edwin went on to successfully open branches in The Blue and Peckham. He was a very sympathetic and caring man who used his hardearned wealth to the benefit of his disadvantaged neighbours.

During his career he was asked to sit on the board of the Bermondsey vestry and was looked upon as an upstanding member of his community. He was a churchwarden and president of both

The fountain inscription ©Southwark Archives the Temperance Council. and LCC Parks Committee. He got involved with improvements in Southwark Park, including the cricket and bowls clubs. He was an honest trader; his price tickets were clearly marked and he traded with the best materials. He campaigned for half-day closing down The Blue and was one of the first to do so on a Thursday afternoon. In short he was a good man!

But back to the park - Mr Pomeroy gifted the wondrous drinking fountain so that little children could get some refreshing and clean drinking water. It was huge! Yet it has disappeared. The Quaker’s burial

ground was always a bit creepy to me when I was young. It was a pretty dark and lonely place. I cannot recall the fountain being there and as it wasn’t bombed I can’t think why it was removed.

To continue on the dark theme, on 14th August 1908 a very unsavoury case was put before the Tower Bridge Magistrates’ Court. James Bowne, a furniture remover, was charged with improper behaviour and outraging public decency in the recreation ground.

If he thought he could get away with it he was wrong! From her home at 260 Long Lane, Mrs Rose Warley spotted Bowne out of the window. He was too involved in his own private party to notice this irate woman had descended upon him and was now raining blows down on him! He tried to run away but she ran after him.

A Miss Wright had joined the chase and managed to smack him in the face before other ladies joined and put the boot in.

He was rescued by a policeman who duly arrested him. Bowne received three months hard labour and the women were commended for their actions. Yuk. Today the park is a bright open space, with play equipment and happy children - but I do wonder what happened to that poor, freezing little boy from over a hundred years ago...

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable works by Centurion Traffic Management, it has made an order, the effect of which is to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable crane operations to be carried out by National Lifting Solutions, it has made an order, the effect of which is to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs/road markings are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload at any time on Kings Bench Street, from the junction of Rushworth Street to the side of No.3 Kings Bench Street.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The alternative route for affected traffic is Rushworth Street, Pocock Street.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to allow works to be carried out by Thames Water, it has made an order, the effect of which will be to temporarily prohibit parking, stopping, waiting and loading on sections of Upland Road and Henslowe Road.

The effect of the order is to temporarily prohibit parking, stopping, waiting and loading at the following locations: Upland Road, (a) from New Life Assembly Church to number 61 Upland Road, (b) Opposite New Life Assembly Church to number 48 Upland Road.

Henslowe Road, (a) outside number 6 to number 16, (b) outside number 7 to number 19.

When permitted barriers, cones or yellow lines are in place, no person shall cause a vehicle to park, wait, load or unload, including waiting for the purpose of delivering or collecting goods. Vehicles parked within the prohibited area will be relocated.

LYNN ABC’S Frankie Hanratty secured his third England Alliance ABA title last Sunday in Harlow, Essex, capping off an outstanding season in style.

Boxing against Paresh Kanji of Southall ABC, Hanratty delivered a superb performance to earn a well-deserved points victory and claim the title.

The achievement follows another major milestone for Hanratty, who recently captained the England

Alliance team at a tournament in Martinique. Representing his country with distinction, he returned with two victories from his three bouts.

“This has undoubtedly been Frankie’s most successful season to date, and he continues to be a huge credit to both

himself and our club,” Lynn coach Terry Pearson said.

Hanratty will now join his teammates at the International Belt Tournament in Hertfordshire on June 6 and 7 as he aims to continue his excellent run of form.

The visitors slipped to 56-4 in the eleventh over, still needing 88 to overhaul Middlesex’s total of 143-8, but Curran’s cool head guided them over the line with nine deliveries to spare.

The all-rounder shared an unbroken partnership of 88 with Laurie Evans, who finished on 34 not out from 21, to secure Surrey’s second successive win in the tournament.

“It was a tricky chase but we wanted to take it nice and deep,” Curran said.

“With a shorter side at Lord’s, we felt like we were never really behind the rate and it’s nice to win a game on a slower wicket that was a little bit tricky.

“We just tried to keep the rate below ten an over, we felt it would be tough bowling to that shorter boundary and Laurie played a beautiful knock there.

Thankfully we cruised over the line.

“I think we’ve bowled really well in our first two games. Yousef [Majid] has bowled particularly well as a younger guy playing his first few in the competition.

“We dropped a couple of catches, which could have hurt us but in the end we’re really pleased with our second win in a row.

“There are two less games this year and of course it’s still early days but nice to get a few points on the board early.”

Surrey are at the Utilita Bowl, Southampton, to take on Hampshire Hawks this Friday (7pm).

Olympians roll over tired Tridents in Heath wave

THE LONDON Olympians delivered another commanding performance in their home opener against Essex Tridents last weekend.

Having already defeated the Tridents 25-0 earlier in the season, the Olympians returned to Blackheath Rugby Club after three straight games on the road.

The Olympians’ defence took to the field first and immediately forced a quick three-and-out, giving quarter-back Brandon Fields and the O’s offence an early opportunity to establish momentum.

Fields wasted little time doing exactly that, leading the hosts downfield before connecting with tight-end Owen Tuthill for the opening touchdown of the afternoon.

Fields then escaped pressure and scrambled brilliantly before finding veteran wide-receiver Jed Brennan alone in the endzone, before Alex Darcy converted the twopoint attempt to extend the lead to 14-0.

Another Olympian veteran, Amedu Mark, soon added the third touchdown of the afternoon as the hosts entered half-time with a 20-0 advantage.

With the Olympians firmly in control, back-up quarter-back Toby McManus took

over offensive duties in the second half.

In the third quarter, McManus connected with Tobi Ajibade for another Olympians touchdown and Kareem Osman converted the two-point attempt to make it 28-0.

McManus then demonstrated excellent timing and composure to find Jed Brennan on an out route as he broke into the endzone for the second time.

As the game moved into the fourth quarter, the intense heat and Essex’s low numbers began to take their toll. One player who showed no signs of slowing down, however, was Spanish safety Angel Garcia, who intercepted a pass deep inside

the Olympians red zone before returning it more than 80 yards for a touchdown.

The Olympians added the extra point to make it 42-0 before the Tridents side were ultimately forced to end the game early due to fatigue and limited numbers.

Olympians head coach Riq Ayub praised both sides for their efforts in the heat.

“Our players once again showed focus and discipline to get the job done. It was a professional and confident performance and they executed what was asked of them from start to finish,” Ayub said. “I was also very proud of the humility and sportsmanship the team showed when

Essex could not continue. The Tridents are a great outfit and despite the heat and their low numbers they continued to compete with great spirit throughout and we thank them for what was a far more competitive game than the scoreline might suggest.

“We’ve taken another step forward as a team, but we now turn our attention to the Exiles in a few weeks time.”

The Olympians now move to a record of three wins and one loss, sitting firmly in second place in the South East Conference.

Their next game will be against the Kent Exiles on June 7 in Blackheath (SE9 6TE).

Dan Empson struck with a wicket in the second over of Beddington’s reply, but the third over went for nineteen, which put them well ahead of the rate. Despite an accurate spell from O’Donnell, who took the second wicket while conceding just twelve runs off six overs, they continued close to the rate throughout the innings.

But although most of the batsmen got

a start, none of them was able to play a decisive innings as the bowlers steadily worked their way through the order, and their highest score was only 41. Two wickets for Henry Goodwin and one each for Perry - thanks to a smart stumping by Steele - and Felix Watson-Smyth reduced Beddington to 181-6 in the 33rd over.

Skipper Shamar Anderson and keeper Sam Owen put on 40 for the seventh wicket in five overs to leave 72 wanted off thirteen overs, but scoreboard pressure was starting to tell. Perry returned to the attack and had Anderson caught off his second ball. In his next over he removed

Owen, also caught, with his first ball and bowled the next batsman with his second.

He then took the tenth wicket with the first ball of his next over. He had taken four wickets for four runs in twelve balls to finish with figures of 5-33 off 7.1 overs.

Beddington had lost their last four wickets for 22 runs to be dismissed for 243 after 41.1 overs.

Dulwich have thus won two of their first three games and move up to third place in the table.

This weekend, they visit Valley End, who have won one and lost two, and are currently sixth.

Millwall celebrate Tristan Crama’s late winner against Southampton

By Tom Appleby MILLWALL’S 2025-26 campaign will be remembered as a ‘nearly’ year.

After their biggest points haul in the Championship (83), Alex Neil’s side were 90 minutes away from Wembley only to lose 2-0 to Hull City in the second leg of their play-off semi-final at The Den. From the first game, when they achieved something they hadn’t managed in 57 years, there was a feeling something special was possible.

It was a season of firsts. Millwall led the division on away points (41) and clean sheets (eighteen).

Even the EFL Cup brought the breaking of a sequence: their first win at Newport County since 1963.

Despite the heartbreak against the Tigers, it was still a hugely impressive season as the Lions went as close as they have ever done to reaching the Premier League, bringing their automatic promotion challenge to the final day.

This paper looks back at the five key matches of the season.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 9: NORWICH CITY 1-2 MILLWALL

Macaulay Langstaff strikes late

Millwall went to Carrow Road for the first game of the season, hoping to make a strong start.

It was a game that hinted at what was to come later in the season, as a goalkeeper had a nightmare he wouldn’t really recover from, and a striker scored the first of his points-winning goals of the campaign.

After a goalless first half, Camiel Neghli scored the Lions’ first goal of the new season as he fired home from Tristan Crama’s cross in the 51st minute.

The lead was short-lived, however.

Four minutes later, Josh Sargent charged down Steven Benda in possession, and embarrassingly for the goalkeeper, his attempted clearance was blocked by the striker before the ball bounced onto the post and into the net.

But Millwall bounced back as Alfie Doughty played a lovely through-ball down the inside-left channel to Macaulay Langstaff, who slotted home through the legs of Canaries goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic to put the Lions 2-1 up.

The result set the standard for what was to come, and was Millwall’s first win at Carrow Road since 1968.

Benda ultimately left the club in January after a difficult time that included another blunder in the 2-0 defeat to Wrexham at The Den. Anthony Patterson was signed on loan from Sunderland and established himself as the club’s number one to the end of the season.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29: MILLWALL 3-2 SOUTHAMPTON

One of the biggest disappointments of the early season was the departure of Millwall’s 2024-25 player of the year, Japhet Tanganga, to Sheffield United.

How would the Lions replace such a good defender and character in the dressing room?

Southampton travelled to The Den for a clash between two promotion contenders.

Few could have guessed when it was goalless at half-time that the second half

THE FIVE GAMES THAT DEFINED MILLWALL’S SEASON would turn into a riveting back-and-forth contest.

In the 55th minute, Jake Cooper dragged Taylor Harwood-Bellis to the ground inside the box. Adam Armstrong duly converted the penalty to put Saints 1-0 up.

Millwall responded in the 72nd minute when Femi Azeez fired into the bottomleft corner from outside the area after good link-up play with Crama.

Taylor had been signed from West Bromwich Albion to replace Tanganga.

With nine minutes left, he scored the Lions’ goal of the season. Stepping onto Casper De Norre’s pass, the centre-back lined up the shot and from 25 yards out, he arrowed a screamer into the top-right corner.

Southampton thought they had snatched a point six minutes later when Finn Azaz pounced on Max Crocombe’s parry to score.

But the game was not over. In the 97th minute, Crama converted Ballo’s cross from a tight angle at the back post for the winner.

It was bedlam at The Den as Neil ran down the touchline to join the celebrations.

The result sent the Lions third and was the first big statement win of the campaign.

Neil said: “You can see how much the group like each other, they’re all friends, this isn’t just their work and they go home, it matters to them, this club matters to them, the fans matter to them, winning matters to them – it’s a great club to be a part of.”

Saints boss Tonda Eckert was still in caretaker charge. He said: “The way they are set up, they are a very good team. It’s not easy to find solutions against them.”

As later came to light, Eckert found ‘solutions’ against other sides – and they would lead to Southampton’s expulsion from the play-off final.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 24: MILLWALL 4-0 CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Tristan Crama flashes up the score Millwall’s unbeaten record against Charlton, stretching back to 1996, was under severe threat at The Valley the previous September until Ra’ees BanguraWilliams’ equaliser two minutes from time.

There was another late goal in the return fixture, but this time it was a precursor for jubilant scenes in the home stands as the hosts then added two more.

This was a demonstration of how confident Millwall were, and came in a run of just two defeats in fifteen league games that saw the Lions go from outside the play-off places to challenging for automatic promotion.

A seventh-minute own goal by Kayne Ramsay from Azeez’s cross settled the nerves in The Den. A second goal proved elusive until Neil’s side turned what was set to be a narrow win into a demolition.

Taylor headed in from Doughty’s corner in the 81st minute to all but seal the victory.

In added-time, Azeez, who was the best player on the pitch, won a penalty. Neghli’s effort was saved, but he managed to get to the loose ball and square for Luke Cundle to scuff it in from a yard out in the 92nd minute.

Charlton’s defence collapsed, and the Lions made it 4-0 a minute later when Aidomo Emakhu fired into the bottom corner.

The game was blockbuster viewing for

Oscar winners Sir Gary Oldman and Sir Daniel Day-Lewis in the stands.

The match also highlighted the difference in quality between the two sides, with Nathan Jones’s Addicks only securing their Championship status on the second-last match-day of the campaign.

TUESDAY, APRIL 21: STOKE CITY 1-3 MILLWALL

Millwall departed for the bet365 Stadium

Play-offs confirmed knowing that a win would confirm their place in the play-offs with two games left.

If they were feeling the pressure, it didn’t show, as the Lions delivered a devastating attacking display against Neil’s former side.

The visitors started brightly and went ahead in the 20th minute when Neghli fired into the roof of the net.

Ten minutes into the second half, Azeez let fly with a long-range effort that seemed to deceive Gavin Bazunu as the goalkeeper could only parry it into his own goal.

The home side pulled one back five minutes later when a cross went in off Taylor.

But Millwall were still in control of the game and solidified their lead when Neghli dispossessed Raphael-Pijus Otegbayo to set up Josh Coburn who made it 3-1.

It was a historic moment, as Millwall clinched their place in the Championship play-offs for the first time since 2001-02.

MONDAY, MAY 11: MILLWALL 0-2 HULL CITY

Millwall clap the fans after falling short Millwall appeared to have done the hard part when they drew 0-0 at the MKM Stadium.

Chairman James Berylson paid for a private airplane back to London on Friday night, but Millwall’s players looked stuck to the ground in the return leg. They just didn’t do themselves justice.

The Lions could legitimately have pointed to a controversially disallowed goal in the first leg after Ryan Leonard finished from close range. The referee whistled for a foul

by Crama, though replays showed it was actually the French defender being fouled first.

Hull started brightly in the second leg before Millwall grew into it.

But the Tigers struck first when Mohamed Belloumi, the man of the match, curled a brilliant finish into the bottom-left corner.

Barry Bannan then uncharacteristically gave the ball away to Belloumi before Regan Slater’s shot was blocked.

The tie was over when, a minute after coming on and with eleven minutes left, Joe Gelhardt doubled Hull’s lead with a low driven shot that Patterson could have done better with.

It was a fourth consecutive defeat in the second-tier play-offs as the Premier League remains an elusive dream, eight years after the first top-six challenge with several more in between.

Although the overarching feeling for Millwall fans was disappointment as an impressive season abruptly ended with Wembley in sight up the Jubilee, over the summer, that feeling will surely turn to excitement at the opportunity the new campaign will bring.

By Will Scott MILLWALL UNDER-21S coach Kevin Nugent said the first team’s success showed his young players the standards required to break into Alex Neil’s side.

The Lions reached the second-tier play-offs for the first time since 2002 after finishing third, their highest placing at the level since 1994.

Millwall last beat West Ham in November 2004 was relegated with 39 points. That would have been enough (along with goal difference) to keep them up in each of the previous 22 seasons, since

they were relegated on 42 points in 2002-03.

“Just hurt. I’ve been here six-anda-half years now. Had a lot of good

moments and this outweighs all of it.

Getting this club relegated – it hurts,” Bowen said.

“We shouldn’t be in the position

While they ultimately fell short in the semi-finals, losing 2-0 to Hull City, their momentum filtered down to the under-21s, many of whom trained with the first team across the season.

“The first team have done so well this season,” Nugent told this paper.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t finish it off. The manager’s been excellent as well, done really good stuff.

“I feel that when there’s a buzz about the place, everybody, and that’s staff, that’s players, that’s young players, everybody’s invested in the football club, and it’s fantastic for everyone.

You want the first team doing well.

“That obviously means sometimes it’s harder to break into that team, but that’s the standard that is going to be required. Everybody wants Millwall to move forward, everybody wants to get play-offs, get in the Premier League, and that only happens if you have a certain level of player and a

certain standard as well.

“Our players learn from that as well.

They look at the games, if they go over and train with the first team, they can see the intensity in it. They can see the professionalism in how the players carry themselves.

“So from our lads’ point of view, it’s a real big learning one, to know what standard is required and what level is going to be required. The first team doing well is absolutely positive right through the football club.”

Nugent was speaking to this paper after the retained list was released, which confirmed that six under-21s: Frankie Baker, Jaiden CelestineCharles, Ben Drake, Jet Dyer, Dean Forbes and Oliver Whitby, have been released.

“It’s just really, really horrible,” Nugent said. “It always has been.

West Ham defeated Leeds United 2-0 at London Stadium last Sunday, but Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 win over Everton meant they finished two points above Nuno Espirito Santos’ side.

Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers were already relegated before the final weekend.

The last meeting between Millwall and West Ham was a 2-1 win for the Hammers in the Championship at Upton Park in February 2012.

“Tough, tough day for us, especially for our fans,” Nuno said. “We knew it was going to be difficult, it was not in our hands. We did our part and we hoped for the best [but] it didn’t happen. We have to pass the sad moment that we are living.

“West Ham has to be in the Premier League. We are a big club that has to be in the Premier League. West Ham are going to need [the fans’] support. The club plays better when we are with them and it makes us proud the way we established this support with our supporters.

“It is a very difficult moment for all of us: the board, the staff, the coaches, the players and more than anything, the fans. It is going to hurt, it is going to be tough.

“But one thing is for sure, West Ham has to be in the Premier League.”

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen summed up his feelings after the side

certain.

“It’s never nice, but these lads, it’s their dream to be a footballer and to be playing for Millwall, and sometimes that doesn’t happen.

“The Championship level is a tough, tough level. So it’s no disrespect to these players who don’t get taken on and offered another contract, but we are seeing these players going into other clubs and finding their own career as well, because of their attitude.

“We do treat and educate them in a way that we feel will give them a career in football. But I think it’s something that as a club and as an academy, particularly in the last few years, we do see players sprinkled right through the system now and carving out their own careers.

“That’s something that the players can be proud of and something that we as a club can be proud of as well.”

Bolton Wanderers have returned to the Championship following a sevenyear absence after beating Stockport County 4-1 in the League One play-off final at Wembley on Sunday.

It is the second time Trotters boss Steven Schumacher has won promotion to the Championship after he led Plymouth Argyle to the League One title in 2023.

Bolton join League One winners Lincoln City and runners-up Cardiff City in the second tier.

There is a change to the play-offs from next season. The teams that finish third and fourth will go into the semi-finals. The teams that finish fifth to eighth will play in the quarterfinals.

The third-placed team – which was Millwall in 2025-26 – will face the lowest-seeded eliminator winner, with the fourth-placed team facing the highest-seeded winner.

The quarter-finals will be one-off games. The semi-finals will remain over two legs.

Southampton are set to start the season on minus-four points after the Spygate affair.

Azeez earns Nigeria call-up

FEMI AZEEZ has been called up by the Nigerian national team for the 2026 Unity Cup.

Azeez, 24, will be part of the Super Eagles’ squad for the upcoming friendly tournament, hosted at the end of the month at Charlton Athletic’s Stadium, The Valley.

Nigeria take on Zimbabwe in the semi-final on May 26, with the winner facing India or Jamaica in the final four days later.

Azeez enjoyed a breakout campaign, leading the Lions in both goals (eleven) and assists (seven). His eighteen goal contributions ranked joint-seventh in the Championship.

The winger was one of two Lions, along with Tristan Crama, to make the Championship team of the season.

BILLY MITCHELL has rejected Millwall’s latest contract offer, this paper understands.

Mitchell, 25, is due to be a free agent at the end of June, and his representatives are still engaged in talks with the club over a new deal.

This paper understands this is the third offer the club have tabled this campaign, all of which have been knocked back.

Watford are understood to be interested in signing the midfielder should the two sides fail to come to an agreement. Mitchell is understood

to tick several boxes for the Hornets and has also impressed with his performances against them in recent seasons.

Mitchell, who came through the Lions’ academy, has made 30 appearances this season and was often Alex Neil’s preferred midfield partner for Casper De Norre when fit, although injuries have restricted his playing time in the past two campaigns.

He has made 196 appearances in all competitions since making his firstteam debut on May 5, 2019, scoring once and registering five assists.

Millwall director of football Steve Gallen has been leading the

negotiations, with Neil confirming in March that talks with Mitchell were ongoing.

“We’ve instigated conversations with Bill and his representatives, and those conversations, as far as I know, are ongoing,” Neil said. “But we’ll see. Hopefully, we can come to a conclusion on that.

“We’ve instigated a lot of discussions with a lot of different players, as far as renewals go,” Neil added. “But it’ll be between the club and their agents to resolve that. Me and the players don’t really have those type of discussions. I think that’s better left to people who deal with the contracts and the money

and all that sort of stuff.”

Thierno Ballo is another first-team regular whose future is up in the air. The Austrian winger joined the Lions on loan last summer with an option to make the move permanent, but Millwall have yet to trigger that clause.

A source close to Ballo told this paper that Millwall have sent “signals” that they would like to retain the player, but suggested that the financial terms may make it difficult to reach an agreement.

The two camps are set to have another round of talks this week.

Ballo remains contracted with the club until June 30.

Saints were found guilty of breaching EFL Regulations by filming Boro’s training two days before the first leg and also admitted to two other incidents earlier in the season.

An independent disciplinary commission ruled that Southampton would be expelled from the play-offs and suffer a four-point deduction next season, dismissing a late appeal.

The Lions reportedly believe they could have grounds to make a claim for compensation, as do Wrexham, who narrowly missed the play-offs on the final day.

The two clubs could challenge the application of the EFL rulebook, which has no provision for replacing an expelled team in the play-offs.

They could also argue that because the spying took place two days before the first leg, the play-offs should have been replayed without Southampton.

Hull beat Boro 1-0 in the final after Oli McBurnie pounced on Sol Brynn’s mistake to tap in a 95th-minute winner.

EFL confirm transfer dates

The window will open on Monday, June 15, and close at 11 pm on Tuesday, September 1.

It closes over two weeks after the start of the season, which gets underway on the weekend of August 14-16.

Millwall enter the window looking to improve the squad that suffered play-off heartbreak against promoted Hull City earlier this month. Alex Neil’s side lost the second leg of their semifinal 2-0 at The Den in the club’s first second-tier play-off appearance since 2002.
