Illegal Migration bill:

The Bishop of Southwark has questioned whether channelcrossing migrants with serious health conditions should be detained, as the Lords debated the government’s Illegal Migration Bill.

Speaking in the House of Lords, The Rt Rev. the Lord Bishop of Southwark Christopher Chessun said he feared there was “no longer a clear presumption that the vulnerable will not be detained” under the new bill.

The Bishop said his piece at around 2am on Thursday, June 8 - roughly eleven hours into a marathon session.

The Lords were debating the government’s controversial law aiming to stop small boat channel crossings.

The legislation, if passed in its current form, would give the government the power to detain illegal migrants, and deport them to Rwanda or another 'safe' country.

Christopher Chessun said: “Does the government agree… that those whose care and support needs make it particularly likely that they will suffer disproportionate detriment from being detained, will generally be considered unsuitable for detention? This bill suggests that the answer is no.”

Currently, Home Office policy means it does not routinely detain highly vulnerable migrants - including those with pre-existing mental illnesses and survivors of torture.

The bill is currently in the committee stage meaning the House of Lords will suggest changes and send it back to MPs to discuss.

The Lord’s session dragged on from 3pm until 4am - reportedly because many Conservative ministers remained in the chamber.

Some have said this was an attempt to force

through the government’s bill as quickly as possible.

Liberal Democrat Lord Scriven said: “It is ironic that we are talking about detention when the Government frontbench is trying to detain us here.”

A Labour spokesperson insisted the selection process was “run in line with our rules and procedures” and that they were “really pleased” with their chosen candidate.

The controversy has come about as a result of Labour Cllr Alice Macdonald’s recent resignation.

She is Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Norwich North and officially resigned from the council two weeks ago - prompting a scramble to select a new candidate ahead of the by-election.

The process to replace her would normally be overseen by the local Labour group but, in a shock move, the London Regional Office took over.

A Labour spokesperson said in a “perfect world” the process would have been run locally but that time pressures had necessitated a “truncated" timeline.

But an anonymous Labour source was unhappy with the process. They said: “I suppose people were worried before the by-

election was announced that there’d be a fixup.

“We were even more concerned when London Region took the process over.”

“People had a short timetable to apply for it - 48 hours, perhaps even less. We could have had a bit more notice. Some would say it was so the regional office could put its fix in.”

The selection panel ultimately produced a shortlist of just two names. This was reduced to one name - Youcef Hassaine - when the other candidate dropped out.

According to his LinkedIn, Youcef Hassaine is a diversity and inclusion manager for Transport for London. He is understood to be a Camberwell and Peckham Labour member.

Labour stormed to victory in Newington in the 2022 local elections, taking 65 per cent of votes.

It will face competition from the Liberal Democrats who candidate is local resident and magistrate Vikas Aggarwal.

The Conservatives' candidate is Lewis Jones.

Labour has often been accused of deliberately blocking ‘left-wing’ candidates from standing for election. Harriet’s Harman MP’s succession was, for example, fraught with controversy - with accusations that Labour was engineering the process to push their preferred candidates.

A Labour spokesperson said: “The selection process was run in line with our rules and procedures. We're really pleased to have a good local candidate who will be a hard working champion for the people of Newington."

Labour Party chiefs have been accused of ‘fixing’ the selection of a Southwark councillor candidate after just one name was left on the final shortlist.

Youcef Hassaine has been chosen to replace Alice Macdonald as Labour’s Newington Ward candidate following her recent resignation and ahead of a by-election on June 29.

But an inside source claims senior party officials hijacked the process - taking it out of local hands and giving rival candidates a narrow window to apply for the position.

This meant that Youcef Hassaine was the only name on the shortlist for the safe Labour seat when local party members voted on Tuesday, May 30.

Some Labour members say Hussain is to the centre of the party, stoking long-running fears that Labour is deliberately blocking left-wing candidates.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

new ferrets IncoMIng at surrey docks thanks to young farMers' fundraIser

neW ferreTs will soon be scurrying around surrey docks farm after kids raised a whopping £1,775.

The farm’s youth committee launched the campaign after the old ferrets, Buddy and Booboo, sadly died in 2020.

In their absence, the enclosure became dilapidated and the money will buy a new ferret house and two to three new furry friends.

A spokesperson for Surrey Docks Farm said: “Their ferret house fundraiser has been a huge success, with the young people organising four separate events at the farm this spring.”

Among those who helped raise money was ten-year-old Adam Imam, from Rotherhithe, who gathered funds by walking into local pubs with a charity bucket and pitching the ferrets’ case to punters.

The Surrey Docks Farm spokesperson added: “The ferrets will be cared for by the young people in our core youth programme on the weekends as well as our volunteers, work experience students and adults with learning disabilities.”

Children in the farm’s programmes will enjoy learning about ferrets, taking them for walks around the farm, feeding and mucking them out.

This will also take them to animal competitions and learn about their behaviour.

The ferrets, whose arrival is hotly anticipated, should come to the farm later this year.

Surrey Docks Farm, established at the site in 1986, is also home to pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys and poultry.

Homeowners at 47 Pomeroy Street bought their properties believing Hatcham Gardens - a green space outside the property - would be re-landscaped for community use.

The park was supposed to be opened up in May 2020 and then was delayed until December 2022.

But six months later, residents are still waking up to an inaccessible, arid space.

Pomeroy resident Andre Silva, 37, said: “I think the main message is to realise that Peabody took the park away from the community to build a massive building, make loads of profit and doesn’t really bother about giving it back. That’s how it feels to us - that they don’t really care.”

Peabody got permission to build 65 homes on the site just off the Old Kent Road in 2018.

To facilitate construction, a large green space outside the development was blocked off and used by contractors.

In exchange, Peabody promised to contribute £64,000 towards the upgrade of the local play area - something it has done.

Although it wasn’t part of the planning permission, Peabody accepts that it also agreed “to carry out additional improvements to the rest of the park”.

Swanky marketing materials dangled the possibility of tree planting, a lawn and play features for kids - of stark contrast to the “eyesore” now facing residents.

Pomeroy resident June Mong said: “When we came to the sales office to look at the property, Peabody salespeople sold the whole property to us by promoting the redevelopment of Hatcham Gardens.

“If anyone wanted to revalue their property this would be a real dampener.”

She also said kids at the local Kender Primary School were missing out on an important green space.

Pomeroy resident and mum-of-two Kelly Childs, 46, said: “Well it’s a real inconvenience because obviously I’ve got two children…they like exercising, they like running and there’s just no outdoor space for them to go.”

Peabody said it was “disappointed” by the situation but that residents would not receive compensation and that it could not say when works would be completed.

By Isabel Ramirez a free public cinema has been put up in a disused space in Brixton for a month, as part of a London-wide festival.

The London Festival of Architecture (LFA) has launched a cinema in a disused space in Brixton, with a range of free shows that celebrate the area's rich heritage.

'Views on the Atlantic', from Brixton Community Cinema with Bamidele Awoyemi, Farouk Agoro and Livia Wang, forms a series of cinema installations which will be shown under a flight of stairs on Atlantic Road and also on Windrush Square.

It is part of the London Festival of Architecture (LFA), set in disused space to

offer residents the chance to 'reimagine' how space is used. The sites will be used for evening cinema screenings, exhibitions, and other programme activities.

This will include displays of archival photography and film gathered from local organisations and archives such as Lambeth Archives, Ritzy Cinema and Black Cultural Archives.

During the day, they will be used for ‘gathering, education and artistic expression’, along with a series of learning workshops.

£20,000 needed to open paddling pool

a coMMuniTy paddling pool in streatham might not open this summer, which would make it the second south London pool to announce it will be closed for the holidays.

The paddling pool on Streatham Common was first created in 1938, and since then has been a 'well-used' communal spot.

In 2016, after it had been out of use for a few years, it was saved from closure

by Streatham Common Cooperative (SCCOOP), who say they've done their best to keep it in use.

Vicky Peet, Operations Manager for SCCOOP, explained that due to a lack of funding and resources over the years, it has become progressively harder to open.

"We're not in a position to open it without support," she said.

In previous years, they managed to raise enough funding to keep it open.

But this year, Vicky said they will need a lot more to keep it open long-term.

"If we don't raise at least £20,000, we won't be able to open it this year."

She said this figure is due to extra charges, including water charges.

"We were never charged before," Vicky continued, "but to be honest I

understand that [Lambeth Council] is strapped for cash like all councils are. So I get it, but it is an extra cost we will have to cover."

This comes as news that Tooting Lido will also be closed this summer for repairs.

Doreen Barton, part of the Streatham Mums Network, said it would be a real shame. "I was a childminder for ten years and used to use the pool regularly," she explained.

"This is for children whose parents can't afford to pay to go on holiday. It was free to use. I would take the under fives during the week in the lovely hot weather. We'd have a great time.

Doreen added that since it brought such joy to so many people, it is up to the community to come together to save it.

"What we need is the momentum for people to get behind SCCOOP and their campaign to bring the pool back," she said.

"News has started to spread and people are so disappointed. Yet another facility for people to be outdoors inexpensively on their doorsteps has been taken away - and we can't let that happen."

Members of SCCOOP and local parents' associations are working on a crowdfunding page, which they hope will be up by next week.

Rare owl is sitting on bins and eating rats in Bermondsey

By Herbie Russell An exotic owl native to the Americas has been spotted perched atop a bin on Bermondsey’s Bonamy Estate.

The Great Horned Owl, affectionately named ‘Jazz’ by locals, is believed to have escaped from an owner in the UK. The huge bird, which is roughly 56cm tall, reportedly had some run-ins with local crows before settling down in Bermondsey.

First spotted in the Russia Dock Woodland in May, the bird of prey, capable of hunting mammals as large as skunks, is believed to be living off rats and mice.

Rotherhithe naturalist John Cadera said: “It was quite a bizarre event. Somebody sent me a video of a large owl in Russia Dock Woodland and within an hour we got to see the bird and try to establish its identity. The owl was being mobbed by some crows and magpies which is very typical behaviour from these birds that seem to hate owls.”

At first, John believed it could be a Eurasian Eagle Owl but later established that it was the closely-related Great Horned Owl. Asked about the owl’s welfare, he said: “If it’s worked out how to

catch rats it will probably be fine.”

Great Horned Owls are native to North and South America and have been known to grow well over 60cm.

It is the heaviest owl in south America and has a wingspan of approximately 4.5 feet.

Due to its tremendous size, locals believe Jazz must be a female - which tend to be larger than males.

Given Great Horned Owls are normally separated from the UK by 5,570km of Atlantic Ocean, John believes it must have escaped from a UK-based owner.

He said: “Ship assisted is not impossible but in this case, the bird is definitely an escape.”

There are unconfirmed rumours that a man is missing an owl in Ilford although nobody has claimed ownership of Jazz.

Captive owls normally have ties called ‘jesses’ on their feet and none are clearly visible on Bermondsey’s visitor.

John believes the owl’s discovery is Southwark’s most exciting bird event since 1973 - when he and his friends found a Red-bill Blue Magpie in the Southwark Park playground.

In March this year, a rescue centre in Cornwall caught a Great Horned Owl which had been left to fend for itself after its Devon owner fell ill and released it into the wild..

By Herbie Russell A police hub planned for the Canada Water Masterplan has been thrown into doubt - with developer British Land and the Met Police unable to confirm whether it will go ahead.

With the Rotherhithe police station having closed in 2017, locals hoped a new hub would help keep a lid on anti-social behaviour as the area's population increased due to the 3,000 home Canada Water development.

When the scheme got planning permission, British Land agreed to use “reasonable endeavours to deliver a Police Hub” subject to to the police's approval.

Marketing materials later reaffirmed the developer was “committed to… a space for a new police hub” leading some locals to believe it was “100 per cent nailed on”.

So the revelation that the hub may not go ahead has come as a shock to locals, many of whom have reported rising anti-social behaviour in the area.

Local campaigner Steve Cornish said: “I and others in the area are concerned about the possibility something that we thought was nailed on 100 per cent going to happen is at risk of being taken away.

“The word on the street is that we are starting to lose some of the amenities that have been discussed for over a decade during dozens of meetings at the Canada Water Forum.”

Police hub on Canada Water Masterplan thrown into doubt In 2017, the Rotherhithe Police Station on Lower Road closed after 52 years and moved to a purpose-built base behind Seven Islands Leisure Centre as part of Met Police cuts.

It meant Walworth was the only police station in the borough to have a front counter open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

But according to a Transport for London (TfL) report, the 27,000-strong population of Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks will “increase significantly” double by some estimates.

Both Surrey Docks and Rotherhithe have seen crime increase almost every month this year, exacerbating fears

about the strain on local police.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “I can confirm that no decision on this has been made either way. Nothing further to add at the moment.”

A British Land spokesperson said: “We are in ongoing discussions with the Metropolitan Police about the delivery of a Canada Water ‘hub’ for local services as part of the Canada Water masterplan.

“While the specification is subject to negotiations and dependent on the Police’s operational and property requirements, we will continue to work closely with them about how to bring a police hub to Canada Water that is fit for purpose.”

Bermondsey's Citizens Advice Bureau closes

By Herbie Russell A Bermondsey charity manager has warned local services are “draining out of the community” after the Blue’s Citizens Advice Bureau closed in April.

The charitable organisation, which helps customers with everything from debt to divorce advice, chose not to renew the branch’s lease amid mounting “funding pressures”.

In 2022, people seeking crisis support through Citizens Advice increased 48 per cent, demonstrating how the rising cost of living has increased reliance on the service.

The Citizen’s Advice branch isn’t the only local service to shut its doors in recent months.

Earlier this year, the Barclays Bank on Tower Bridge Road permanently closed and the Walworth Road Post Office only recently reopened after a disruptive three-month hiatus.

Luds Van Den Belt, a Charity Manager at Big Local Works, an advice and support service also on the Blue, said: “There are no job centres around here and now there’s no Citizens Advice. You’re just slowly seeing services draining out of the community that need it most.

But there are some things, like debt and housing advice, which it’s less equipped to deal with.

them to wherever where they can go with that,” said Luds.

MP Neil Coyle put his concerns about the closure to Citizens Advice’s Head of Policy Morgan Wild at a Work and Pensions Select Committee meeting on Wednesday, June 7.

He asked why the branch had closed despite Citizens Advice’s £153 million turnover and whether alternative venues had been considered.

Explaining that the organisation was facing the “bleakest” situation since WWII, Wild said: “The challenges we face as a service are extraordinary.

“We have vastly more demand than we are able to advise and funding has been under continuous pressure so we are always looking for opportunities to make sure that we can reduce costs where possible while maintaining the overall level

of provision for our services.”

Citizen’s Advice did not answer this paper’s enquiries as to whether alternative venues had been considered prior to the Bermondsey branch's closure.

However, a spokesperson did say: “The Bermondsey office closed in April 2023 following a decision by the CAS trustee Board not to renew the lease due to funding pressures on the organisation.

“Our funding has not kept pace with the surging level of demand, and so we are always looking at how we can deliver our service most effectively, and will continue to do so.”

Police officers accused of using 'excessive force' when protestors blocked an immigration van in Peckham will not face misconduct or criminal sanctions.

In June last year, over 100 locals thwarted immigration officers attempting to detain a Nigerian man suspected of immigration offences on Evan Cook Close, just off Queens Road.

Many people, including local politicians, claimed footage showed officers being "heavy handed" by shoving and kicking protestors.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct launched an investigation and has now concluded the force used was “necessary, reasonable and proportionate”.

IOPC director Steve Noonan said: “We understand the concern that was raised regarding this incident and the force that was used by some of the officers.

“We completed a thorough investigation which included reviewing a substantial amount of footage.

“In the circumstances, where the officers were attempting to manage over 100 people involved in a protest, we found they acted in line with national guidance on use of force and the force they did use was necessary, reasonable and proportionate.”

The incident began on Saturday, June 11, when Immigration Enforcement attended an address to arrest a man suspected of overstaying his visa.

Shortly before 1.30pm, police were called to the scene to a report that a group of people were obstructing the immigration officers, who had put the man in their van.

A south London council could ban ice cream vans on over 30 roads

Local Democracy Reporter A South London council has revealed plans to ban travelling ice cream vans from selling on over 30 roads across the borough.

Greenwich Council has published a

list of streets across Greenwich and Woolwich town centres where ice cream vans could be prohibited from trading.

Council documents said the list had been created due to the “nuisance” and impact on public amenity that the trading can attract. They also highlighted potential air quality improvements

due to reduced emissions from “engine idling”.

The list includes 20 roads in Woolwich town centre and 13 in Greenwich town centre. Included in the list are Beresford Square, Powis Street and General Gordon Square in Woolwich, as well as Greenwich High Road and Cutty Sark Gardens in Greenwich.

According to council documents, King William Walk beside Greenwich Park was added to the list given its “sensitive” location in a World Heritage Site and Conservation Area.

Attractions along the street include St Mary’s Gates, Royal Museums Greenwich and the Old Royal Naval College.

The decision on the street came after

A representative from the Planning Inspectorate said in their report that the queue from an ice cream van would have a negative impact as it would visually “clutter” the views of the surrounding attractions, as well as creating a “bottleneck” at the main entrance to the museums.

They said: “The partial screening and cluttering of views would adversely affect the enjoyment of visitors to this area as it would make the experience of this significant tourism attraction less pleasurable and it would make it more difficult for them to appreciate the significance and attractiveness of the area.”

Council officers said in their report that vendors who own ice cream vans may trade for 15 minutes or less on roads in the borough that are not exempt. Conditions for selling include moving locations within 15 minutes and not returning to the same street on the same day.

The decision on ice cream vans in the borough was due to be decided at a cabinet meeting for Greenwich Council on Wednesday June 14 after the paper went to press.

Police were called to Rymer Street, a residential street off Dulwich Road, at 7.50pm, to reports of a stabbing.

They discovered a man, in his 30s, suffering from stab wounds. He was rushed to hospital where his condition was considered non-lifethreatening.

There have been no arrests and police enquiries are ongoing.

The area would have been busy at the time given that the popular Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell Park was still underway.

Walworth primary children call for fairer access to child benefits for migrant families

Kids from a Walworth primary school, whose parents are immigrants with no recourse to public funds, joined an emotional protest outside Parliament last week to call for fairer access to child benefits.

On Tuesday, June 6, pupils from Surrey Square Primary in Walworth joined teachers, parents and community leaders in Victoria Tower Gardens to demand that every child in the UK receives child benefits.

It is part of a campaign led by Citizens UK following research by the Migration Observatory, which estimates that 180,000 children in the UK live with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF). This is a condition attached to visas which means some families cannot access benefits and the social safety net, even when they are working and paying taxes.

As a result, they do not receive Child Benefits, which are £24 each week for the first child, and £15.90 for any subsequent children i.e. at least £1,248 per year. Many parents will have NRPF for ten years - the majority of childhood.

One mother who knows exactly what that is like is 31-year-old Melissa, who also has a child at Surrey Square. Melissa explained that although she was born in America herself, she has been in the UK for nearly twenty years. "I've never had access to public funds," she explained, despite working here and paying taxes.

Her daughter, Jessica, 11, was born in the UK but was only able to get her British Passport last year (when she turned ten).

"She has her passport now, but she still has no access to public funds, because I

don't," Jessica explained.

Melissa's story is like many of the parents at the protest - because she was an immigrant, her child has never been able to access child benefits, even though she was born here.

She commented on what a difference it would have made: "It is very hard for us as immigrants to provide for our children and get well-paid jobs. It would help a lot - not for anything specific but £24 a week could have made things easier for Jessica growing up."

At the demonstration, children and parents from across London shared personal stories about how this welfare restriction impacts them. They waved flags and chanted "every child should benefit", finishing by throwing paper currency in the air "to symbolise the money that many children are missing out on."

Albinia Stanley, Community Organiser from Citizens UK, said: "This issue is particularly urgent due to the costof-living crisis, which has left families struggling to meet their day-to-day needs, leaving children vulnerable to destitution and exploitation.

"Research by LSE shows how growing up with the NRPF welfare ban significantly impacts a child’s health, well-being, and life chances."

Last year, in April 2022, after a campaign led by Citizens UK and other organisations, the government permanently extended free school meal eligibility to all children across the UK regardless of citizenship.

The Citizens UK #EveryChildShouldBenefit Campaign is now calling for the government to extend Child Benefits to every child, no matter what their immigration status.

YouTube coach Joe Wicks makes workout video at St Thomas'

online fitness coach Joe Wicks, who rose to fame for his viral workout videos, joined the staff at St Thomas' to help make exercise easier for people with Parkinson's.

Wicks, known as 'The Body Coach', has made a new workout video designed for people with Parkinson's.

The famous fitness trainer worked with a specialised neuro-physiotherapist at St Thomas' Hospital to release the free online video.

It comprises ten different exercises, including a one-minute ‘sit to stand’ challenge, all of which have been designed to be done at home.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects about 145,000 people in the UK. The main symptoms include slow movement, stiffness and tremor but it can also affect people’s walking, sleep and memory.

Research has shown that taking part in regular physical activity can positively impact patients’ symptoms, both physically and mentally.

Joe says he is passionate about making exercise accessible to everyone regardless of ability.

“Taking part in regular exercise has many benefits not just for your physical

"It was great to come down to St Thomas’ Hospital to hear more about how exercise can help people with Parkinson’s manage their symptoms

and to create this workout video tailored specifically for them.”

He was assisted by Milly Khan, a highly specialist neuro-physiotherapist at Guy’s and St Thomas.'

“Physical activity is a really

important component of treatment for Parkinson’s," she explained, "and the condition shouldn’t be a barrier to being physically active.

“It’s important that physical activity sessions contain components of aerobic

fitness, strength training, balance and core control, and stretching.

She added that it’s important for those with the condition to challenge their symptoms, and "do exercise you enjoy."

St Thomas’ Hospital hosts exercise classes for patients with Parkinson’s in six-weekly blocks. While visiting the hospital, Joe took part in one of the classes.

Carol Webb, from Eltham, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2019 and has previously attended exercise classes at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Carol, 52, said since her diagnosis, she has found regular exercise helpful.

“Taking part in regular exercise like yoga really helps to keep my joints flexible," she said.

"If I sit still for too long, my joints can feel stiff so it's good to keep moving. I found the exercise classes with Milly really helpful and, although tiring, it has given me the confidence to start a circuit training class locally - something I would not have thought possible previously.

“During lockdown, my youngest daughter and I took part in Joe’s online PE lessons in our garden, so it’s been exciting to take part in this video alongside him,” she added.

Police appeal after woman 'raped in broad daylight' in Burgess Park

By Herbie Russell Police are appealing to the public after a woman reported being raped in broad daylight by a man in Burgess Park, on Friday, May 26.

The woman, in her twenties, told police she was assaulted in the Cobourg Nature Reserve - a small patch of woodland just east of the lake - between 9.30 and 10.15am.

Police have released a detailed description of the suspect, described as black, in his late twenties or early 30s, with a scar under his eye on the left side of his face.

Detective Constable Timea Fazekas, leading the investigation, said: “This was a truly horrific incident for the victim and she is being fully supported by officers specially trained to investigate sexual offences.

Could the long-promised Marks & Spencer in Crystal Palace finally begin development next year?

Local Democracy Reporter After more than a decade of work, a derelict building in the popular Crystal Palace triangle could finally get underway in 2024. But the building in question is on offer to be rented out again, casting doubt on the possibility of progress next year.

The application to demolish buildings behind Victory Place and Carberry Road, off Westow Street, to make way for an apart-hotel, flats and shop space were originally approved in 2013, and in 2018 the developer said a new M&S store is interested in opening on the ground floor.

In 2022 the owners St Aidans Holdings submitted a change to the planning approval to replace the apart-hotel rooms with more flats. This was approved by Croydon Council and means the total number of flats provided as part of the development would rise from 33 to 43.

A representative of Arcus, which was the agent on the latest application said development is expected to “kick off” early next year.

'Experienced bag snatchers' jailed after arrest in London Bridge station

A pair of “experienced bag snatchers” who targeted victims at station cafes have been jailed two-and-a-half months after being arrested at London Bridge.

Hernan Montero-Villegas, 54, and Miguel Angel Contreras-Nova, 39, got eighteen and fourteen-month sentences respectively.

PC Steve Bryan said: “MonteroVillegas and Contreras-Nova are clearly experienced bag snatchers who have refined their tactics to avoid being detected by the unsuspecting victims they target.”

“I hope the adequately long prison terms handed down to them provide the three victims with the comfort of justice being served,” he added.

People were targeted at Waterloo, Liverpool Street and St Pancras stations.

On February 25, a 54-year-old woman, who was sat drinking a cup of tea in Liverpool Street station’s Soho Coffee

café, fell victim to Montero-Villegas.

He spotted her bag on the floor and manoeuvred it away with his foot before concealing it with his own rucksack.

Montero-Villegas then left with her bag which contained €100, £40, her driving licence, bank cards and a phone charger.

On March 22, Montero-Villegas and Contreras-Nova struck at the Starbucks inside Waterloo Station, this time targeting a 50-year-old woman.

Contreras-Nova pretended to be on the phone and walked around the café while Montero-Villegas again used his foot to take the bag away from the victim. He picked it up and left the café along with Contreras-Nova. The woman’s bag contained a purse with £200 inside and other items including reading glasses and an umbrella.

The third offence took place on March 28 in the Paul Express cafe in St Pancras Station, where the pair combined to steal a 50-year-old man’s satchel. Inside were two Eurostar tickets, a film script,

earphones, a phone charger and his passport.

Two days later, on March 30, a British Transport Police officer spotted the pair while patrolling London Bridge station.

The officer arrested them in connection to the bag thefts. Once in police custody, they were further arrested for money laundering and being in possession of more than £3,000.

Montero-Villegas and Contreras-Nova, both of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of theft and one count of money laundering.

A judge handed them their sentences, a combined 32 months, at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday, June 8.

PC Steve Bryan said: “What they failed to realise is that the railway is a CCTVrich environment and here at BTP we are relentless in our pursuit of thieves.

We won’t stop until they’re put before the courts. If you’re a victim of theft on the railway, report it to us as soon as possible by texting 61016 – we’ll always take swift action.”

Businesses say they fear for their futures after a “surprise” announcement that flats will be built on the Biscuit Factory car park in Bermondsey.

Business owners have complained they received no prior warning they will imminently lose out on 60 spaces.

Grant Davis, chairman of the London Cab Drivers' Club, which provides trade representation to taxi drivers, said: “We have members park their taxis in the car park while they come to give us important licensing and medical documentation.

“The car park is of enormous value to the club and, if they take that away, where are our members meant to park?”

Grant said he’d just signed a new car park and office lease and that there’d been “no real consultation” about the looming disruption.

The changes are part of developer Greystar’s plans to build over 1,500 homes - including 35 per cent affordable - on a site including the former Peek Freans factory, which provides offices to a range of businesses.

Greystar’s plans include a residential building on the car park between Jam and Almond studios which is shared by numerous businesses.

She added: "Initially, it was strapless and I felt we had to add some security to the top of it so that when she’s running around later I’m protected."

Daisy's Coronation Street wedding dress is up for auction in south London

A wedding dress worn by a character on Coronation Street is going up for auction at a 'sustainable' wedding fair in Sydenham.

South London Hospice St Christopher’s is holding its first-ever wedding fair, for people to buy pre-loved gowns for their big day.

Hosted at the hospice’s Education Centre in Sydenham, St Christopher’s Sustainable Wedding Fair will take place over the weekend beginning July 1 and will include an opportunity to bid for a dress worn on the world’s longestrunning soap – Coronation Street.

The mermaid-style sleeveless dress was worn by the character Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) during her dramatic wedding day episode which aired in March. In the episode Daisy is the target of an acid attack on her wedding day, the dress up for auction was one of three used during filming.

It has been donated by a friend of the hospice and will be up for auction at the event.

Fred Stone, director at the Arch Climbing Wall, said the announcement had come as “a surprise” and that he was “confused” by the situation. But he added that, given most of their customers cycled or walked, he didn’t “think the change of use will create any issues for us”.

A spokesperson for Workspace said it was planning to source twenty new parking spaces nearby although accepted that this was still a net loss of 40.

Asked about the lack of warning businesses have received, they said: “Any businesses leasing a car parking space should have been aware of the four weekly rolling break clause in the lease.”

A spokesperson for Greystar said: “We will be commencing site investigation works in the car park in mid-July ahead of the building construction later in the year as part of the future development.

Given the extent of these works, the safest option is to suspend the car park.

“As discussed with Workspace we will be maintaining some parking spaces for tenants during construction and have agreed with Workspace that the completed development will provide 20 parking spaces for use by their tenants in perpetuity. We look forward to continuing conversations with Workspace and the wider community in the coming months.”

Brockwell Park will hold two more events over 36 days this summer

Local Democracy Reporter A South London park that hosted six festivals in less than two weeks will be taken over by more events for over a month in summer, including a giant Pokémon hunt.

Brockwell Park in Lambeth will welcome thousands of visitors for three events between June and September 2023.

As well as last weekend’s Lambeth Country Show, a giant Pokémon hunt in August and a 5k charity walk to raise money to combat prostate cancer will be held in September.

Scott Ainslie, Lambeth Green group’s co-leader, said he couldn’t stand in the way of what he dubbed “one of the greatest cultural events on earth,” the Lambeth Country Show.

Lambeth councillors approved the use of the park for the Lambeth Country Show and the two other events just days after some people living near the park complained of unbearable noise from music festivals held in the park over the last two weekends. Some residents have also expressed anger at a large part of the park being fenced off since mid-May for the events.

Francis Martin, who lives in Herne Hill near to the park, said the festivals were too big. He told a council planning

meeting on June 6: “I don’t particularly object to holding festivals in Brockwell Park. My supposition is that they’re too big. Because they’re too big they end up being too loud.”

He added that he felt councillors were playing lip service to democracy as the three events had already been planned and advertised.

Mr Martin said: “It seems to me you don’t really have a choice whether or not to approve this planning application as in these events are already permanently organised, the infrastructure is already in place… I’m sure you will approve the event today and not stop Lambeth Country Show for the first time in 60 years.”

A planning committee made up of five Labour councillors and one Green councillor voted to wave through the 36 days of events at a meeting on Tuesday June 6. The 36 days includes the time spent installing and taking down stages and fencing.

Fears office extension will dwarf London’s oldest Gothic Cathedral

Local Democracy Reporter An office block next to London’s oldest Gothic church will become even taller despite fears the cathedral will be dwarfed by the plans.

Two floors will be added to six-storey Minerva House in Southwark, as well as roof terraces with 360 degree views of the capital, under proposals approved by the council on June 6.

The 1980s office block sits across the street from Grade-I listed Southwark Cathedral, which was built over 600 years ago between 1220 and 1420. But some local residents fear the upwards extension of the building will further overshadow the historic cathedral and encourage more drunken revellers to use a nearby square as a toilet.

Amir Eden, chair of neighbourhood group Living Bankside, told a Southwark Council planning meeting the proposals would significantly impact the cathedral.

Mr Eden, who lives locally, said: “[Southwark Cathedral] stands to be further dwarfed. […] I find myself perplexed by the utter lack of substance of this proposal. I mean look at it. Juxtapose it with the cathedral and the conservation area and ask yourself ‘is it in keeping?’

“If you look at certain views from West or East, the cathedral’s tower is going to be impacted significantly. You stand to have this crown jewel that will

not be seen as it is currently.”

Mr Eden said that he was particularly disappointed that developer Great Portland Estates [GPE] had failed to offer any money to improve nearby Minerva Square, which is home to the permanent memorial to those who lost

their life in the London Bridge terror attack.

He added: “The square is a victim to vandalism and human fouling by inebriated visitors. The applicant’s proposed uses will add to these problems.”

As part of the plans, GPE has agreed to put £425,000 towards improving Southwark Cathedral, as well as making the council a £393,000 carbon offset payment.

The new roof terraces will be restricted to use between 9am and

8pm, Monday to Friday and affordable workspace available at a 25 per cent discount to market rates will be included in the development.

James Shipton, senior development manager at GPE, said the extension would create new jobs and improve the attractiveness of the area. He told the meeting: “Our net zero carbon proposal reuses 12,000 sq metres of existing office space and creates a further 6,000 sq metres of new space.

“Overall it is estimated the improved building will support more than 1,600 local jobs, boosting the local economy.

We are proposing significant public realm improvements, including a new pedestrian route through the building to enhance the Jubilee Walkway, as well as a new attractively landscaped garden in Montague Close.”

Minerva House, which is on the bank of the River Thames, sits within the capital’s Central Activity Zone, an area described by City Hall as “one of the world’s most attractive and competitive business locations.”

City Hall estimates there is a need for 177,000 more office jobs in the area between 2011 and 2031.

A council planning committee made up of four Labour councillors and one Liberal Democrat approved the plans unanimously on June 6. Explaining her decision, Kath Whittam, Labour councillor for Rotherhithe said: “Minerva House at the moment looks horrible. I think it will improve the look.”

Armed robber who targeted south London bookmakers 'staffed by women' is jailed for eight years A “dangerous” criminal who went on a four-month armed robbery spree across south London has been jailed for a minimum of eight years.

Michael Lindo, 41, terrorised bookmakers across south London from May to September 2022.

Masked, and waving a “highly convincing” imitation firearm, Lindo “thought nothing of terrifying the victims” many of whom “feared for their lives”.

Lindo, who is of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to fifteen offences relating to a total of nine armed and attempted armed robberies. He was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on Wednesday, June 7.

Detective Sergeant Paul Bartlett, of the Met Police Flying Squad, said: "Lindo is a prolific and dangerous man who thought nothing of terrifying the victims in these incidents in order to get what he wanted.

"These are people who were going about their work as normal when they were thrust into situations in which they feared for their lives.

“The effects of these kinds of incidents can't be underestimated; there may be no physical injury but the psychological impact can be devastating.

"It is no exaggeration to say that London is a safer place with him behind bars.”

Lindo targeted bookmakers across south and south east London, including Peckham, Streatham and Brixton.

In a single day, on Thursday, June 11, he committed attempted armed robberies at three separate gambling shops.

demand cash from the cashier, while threatening them with his imitation firearm.

According to a sentencing note, he often targeted premises where a lone female member of staff was working usually during opening or closing time when the shops were empty.

In total, eleven different staff members were the victims of his crime spree, some of whom suffered serious psychological harm. From May to September 2022, Lindo stole just over £9,000.

Officers from the Flying Squad, an elite Met Police branch set up to tackle

violent crime, began investigating the nice incidents as linked.

They identified Lindo in September 2022 and officers started surveilling him.

On September 20, 2022, officers

watched as he approached a bookmakers in London Road, Tooting, before using an imitation firearm to threaten staff.

Firearms officers descended and Lindo was swiftly arrested.

According to the Met, the extent of

He had been on licence having served six years of an eleven-year sentence for a previous armed robbery.

Ms Strachan revealed that Hideaway, which opened in December 2009, had never made a profit after she had to take out a £1.25 million loan to refurbish the former snooker club as a music venue.

Describing the impact of the pandemic as “crippling,” Ms Strachan said: “It is important to note that the building is in a very poor condition. Surveys confirming asbestos on the ground floor, the roof and other areas.

"The roof is also in a poor state, [and] partially collapsed in 2017 following several days of heavy rainfall.”

She added that the smaller venue proposed would also reduce the amount the club had to spend on maintenance.

The basement space in the hotel would house approximately 123 people whereas Hideaway’s ex-venue could cater for around 250.

Nicole Griffiths, the local Green councillor for the area, said she welcomed the principle of a hotel but feared the proposed building was too big.

In a statement read out on her behalf at the meeting, Cllr Griffths, co-leader of Lambeth’s Green group, said: “The idea of a hotel on this site is good for Streatham but a more sympathetically designed development that is low-rise, including community amenities and truly affordable homes alongside a small hotel would be preferential.”

A council planning committee made up of five Labour councillors and one Green councillor went on to approve the new hotel and basement venue.

Scott Ainslie, Green councillor for Streatham St Leonard’s, said he was keen for the new venue to allow Hideaway to regain its former reputation for worldclass jazz. Describing the venue as “very close” to his heart, Cllr Ainslie said: “Suddenly Streatham was on the map as being one of the best jazz clubs, beating Ronnie Scott’s in certain awards.

“A compelling case has been made by the previous owner of the music venue… whilst I do know it impacts some residents I’m mindful to approve this,” added Cllr Ainslie, co-leader of Lambeth’s Green group.

Hideaway in Streatham closed its doors in March 2020 after struggling to foot a £750,000 bill for serious repairs needed to the venue. But the club, which has been dubbed South London’s answer to Soho’s internationally famous jazz bar Ronnie Scott’s, could now reopen in the basement of a new hotel planned on the site of its former home.

Under plans approved by Lambeth Council on June 6, a 114-bed hotel will be built on land behind Streatham High Road occupied by the now closed club.

Frances Strachan, boss of Hideaway, said the new venue was essential if the award-winning club was to reopen in Streatham.

She told a council planning meeting on June 6: “The main reason for the nonviability of the club was the associated costs of the sheer size of the building.

By Herbie Russell Southwark Council has given the go-ahead to plans to build an eight-storey office block on a residential Bankside street.

The decision prompted audible uproar from angry attendees at the meeting on Tuesday, June 6.

Local residents had warned the building would be an “immense burden” due to the loss of sunlight and privacy.

But committee chair Cllr Richard Livingstone, who gave the deciding vote, said that any development on the site was likely to have negative impacts on sunlight so the block should be approved.

He also suggested a shorter building would not be worth a developer’s investment.

Acorn Property Group and Galliard Homes are behind the proposals for the

site on Bear Lane, a narrow residential street south of Southwark Street.

The site currently contains a commercial yard and a mish-mash of single-storey buildings.

The new building will be an office block but also include retail space.

Objecting local residents argued the building caused unacceptable light loss to neighbouring buildings, was too tall, and invaded their privacy.

The scheme had been amended to alleviate privacy worries, following the original application in April 2021.

For example, the building’s windows have been set a minimum twelve metres away from the homes opposite The plans also included introducing plants to screen people living in the opposite building from the office’s terrace.

“We still know people are there…you don’t know whether someone is peering through those plants and can see you.”

There were also concerns that 25 windows on 18 Great Suffolk Street would experience a “major adverse” reduction in sunlight.

But Trevor Morriss, speaking on behalf of SPPARC Architecture, said: “During the period of several years, we have evolved, through extensive pre-application

discussions with planning officers, local societies and residents, a proposal that respects and responds to the setting of the street to create a building that will skilfully cohabit with neighbouring properties whilst mitigating matters of privacy and amenity.”

He added that it would create 520 jobs and provide a “healthy and attractive workspace”.

Borough and Bankside councillor David Watson, who spoke as an objector, said: “This development was conceived pre-pandemic and now risks blighting the neighbourhood with an over-sized monolith, that will join the myriad other

Women and girls to get more sporting opportunities thanks to a £200,000 fund

By Herbie Russell Women and girls can look forward to a host of sporting opportunities around Canada Water and Rotherhithe thanks to a £200,000 funding package.

Canada Water Dockside developers Art-Invest and Decathlon UK have announced funding for activities including boxing, rowing, football and cricket - with many aimed at getting girls involved.

In Southwark, just 28.8 per cent of women and girls play sport for at least 30 minutes each week compared to 40.2 per cent of males.

Luka Vukotic, partner at ArtInvest Real Estate, said: “There was

a clear demand this year for help in engaging women and girls in physical activity, and we hope with the range of programmes we are supporting this year that we can offer positive momentum in encouraging better female participation in the local area.”

The fund was first announced in 2022 and the money will help support the selected organisations this year.

Each year, the fund is opened to new applicants although old recipients can reapply.

Activities receiving funding include football sessions at Millwall Community Trust, with a specific focus on girls-only sessions.

Southwark Park Cricket will provide weekly training sessions for females

and buy new equipment with their funding.

London Youth Rowing Club will continue to encourage young people to take up the oars while Roosters Boxing Club will offer weekly training to children and women in Rotherhithe.

Finally, the fund will support more weekly tennis coaching sessions at Southwark Park’s Youth Tennis Club and The Docklands Settlements Community Centre is getting a new £10,000 5-a-side astroturf pitch.

Delphine Mazillier, Decathlon UK Corporate Social Responsibility Leader, said: “I am so proud to be entering into our second year of working with Art-Invest to support six wonderful charities in and around

Southwark. I can’t wait to see the impact that this funding will have, as we endeavour to bring sport into the lives of a number of underrepresented groups.”

Art-Invest's Canada Water Dockside scheme includes a huge new office and retail development by Canada Water Dock in Rotherhithe.

Canada Water Dockside would be the “front gate” to the raft of new developments in the area, most prominently British Land’s Canada Water masterplan, according to the plans.

It will see 24-storey and ten-storey buildings put up directly to the east of the dock, with a thirteen-storey building behind them..

Cllr Nick Johnson, who would later oppose the application, said the daylight loss was “pretty bad” and that he couldn’t support the application.

As committee chair, Cllr Richard Livingstone had the deciding vote and backed the plans, allowing them to go ahead.

'Flasher' arrested with 'nunchucks in a rucksack'

By Herbie Russell An alleged flasher at Queen's Road Peckham station has been arrested by the British Transport Police.

Officers were called to the station on Tuesday, June 6, and arrested the man on suspicion of indecent exposure. He was “further arrested” after nunchucks - traditional Japanese martial arts weapons - were allegedly found in his rucksack.

A spokesperson for BTP said: "There is simply no place on the rail network for sexual offenders.

“If you witness behaviour such as this, we urge you to report it to us by texting 61016.”

The truth is that Johnson has now seen the findings of the inquiry into the extent of his deceit during covid lockdowns and has fled like an utter coward.

The report from the Tory-dominated committee is out soon so we will all see the extent of his lies, but not before the current Tory Prime Minister has approved Johnson’s ‘honours’ list which bizarrely even includes a gong for his hairdresser.

The sooner the country is shot of his grubbiness the better.

In stark contrast to Johnson, there are people I meet in Southwark who offer nothing but selflessness and desire no more than the chance to improve their community.

Today is the funeral of one such person: Coral Newall. I met her through volunteering at the Christmas dinner at Guy’s and through her work at the Beormund Community Centre. Coral was one of life’s givers: always there for others and always looking out for our community. She will be missed greatly.

Our community needs more champions like Coral as we struggle through the cost-of-living crisis. Last week, I met with ‘End Child Poverty’ campaigners who highlighted child

MP for Bermondsey & Old Southwark poverty rates have risen to 4.2 million over the past decade, largely as a direct result of Government policies, including cuts to Universal Credit.

Labour in Government legislated to abolish child poverty but the work towards that goal has been eradicated by Tories since 2010 (aided

by Lib Dems in the Clegg-Cameron Coalition). As a result, almost 10,000 children across Bermondsey and Old Southwark now live in poverty.

We also see record foodbank demand as the Government ignores Labour calls for a proper windfall tax on excess energy profits to help anyone struggling.

Citizen’s Advice told Parliament last week that the country is facing its bleakest situation in their entire 80 year history.

The stark warning about people’s debt and finances comes as Citizens Advice close their Bermondsey Bureau.

I am seeking alternative means for local people to access support in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe after the closure of the bureau at The Blue.

I hope using alternative facilities, like the council office on Tooley Street, my own office on Jamaica Road or community halls will help ensure no one loses the means

aroLine Lucas, the first green Mp in the uK, has announced that after 13 years in parliament she will not be standing again.

Her firm, clear voice has always cut through the distraction and delaying tactics used by others She reminds us of basic principles, asking us to think about what is fair and compassionate and what will allow life on earth to flourish.

In spring 2018, I heard Caroline speak in Southwark. She met people on the streets around Rye Lane, as well as pupils at Bessemer Grange and Goose Green primary schools.

The previous year, a team of Goose Green parents had fundraised for a ‘green screen’ round the school.

Measurements gathered by Southwark

Green Party showed levels of nitrogen dioxide outside the school were 58.83 micrograms per cubic metre – the EU legal limit is 40. Nitrogen dioxide is only part of the problem of air pollution. There is no safe level of exposure to particulates - the tiny particles from engine exhaust pipes and tyres. The ready grown ivy hedges provide a physical barrier to stop some of the particulates from getting into the playground.

What we hadn’t expected was how the screens would cut out noise too. As we put up the ivy panels, the sound of Grove Vale traffic dropped away. There was a new sense of calm in the playground. Research has shown that noise increases stress and interferes with concentration, leading to more disruptive behaviour

Too much background noise also puts children with hearing difficulties, English as a second language or attention deficit disorders at a disadvantage. Thanks to the screens, we could stand in the playground and hear Caroline’s words.

No police hub would mean a gaping hole in Canada Water community

T

he Rotherhithe peninsular is in desperate need of an improved police presence and it's worrying that the proposed police hub is up in the air.

Considering the area is facing a triumvirate of increasing crime, residents and commuters, is this really the time to scrap long-held plans for more police in the area?

Data gathered in 2017 forecasted that Surrey Docks would have the third-greatest population increase of any Southwark ward by 2026.

The combined population of Surrey Docks and Rotherhithe is already roughly 27,000. Add the families moving into some of the 3,000 homes being built on the Canada Water Masterplan and we could be looking at a 75 per cent increase.

Simultaneously, Southwark’s northern wards have seen a spike in crime, prompting speculation that Rotherhithe could be made the highest priority crime area possible - putting it on a par with London Bridge. The Met Police is yet to confirm this.

The growing anti-social behaviour problem has been evidenced in the Met Police’s published data. There was also the recent revelation that Southwark is London’s third-worst phonesnatching hotspot. People often report that this is particularly bad outside Canada Water station.

Then there is the Surrey Quays station revamp which, when completed in 2026, will make the station an even busier transport hub.

With the Met being involved in countless scandals, both the Commisioner Mark Rowley and Mayor Sadiq Khan have emphasised the importance of improving police trust.

The taxpayer is the one bankrolling the Met’s overhaul. Last winter, City Hall announced it would take 10 per cent more cash from council tax-payers every year, equivalent to £40 more a year per household. £15 of that is going towards policing, raising roughly £55 million.

Many people will be happy to take the hit to their personal finances if it means a more effective, trustworthy police force. But a big part of building trust is arguably having more police officers visible on our streets. The loss of a police hub will only hinder that healing process.

Making the Canada Water area a hub of local services is meant to be an important part of British Land’s vision for the area. There are talks of school expansions and a new health facility.

No police hub could be a gaping hole in that vision. The Met Police and British Land must work together to make sure it goes ahead.

what’s on an evenIng wIth…

Capturing the Moment TaTe Modern’s new exhibition perhaps poses the question of whether in the age of the camera, we need artists, but there is no definitive answer, just more questions, writes Michael Holland.

andy haMiLTon included in his act how strangers would point, stare and say that they know him from somewhere but can’t think where (he was once mistaken for serial killer dr harold shipman).

That might be common for many people who only know him from his appearances on have i got new for you, but andy hamilton is much more than being paul Merton’s funnier sidekick, writes Michael Holland.

As well as co-writing Outnumbered and Drop The Dead Donkey (a series that looks like getting an update and broadcast soon), he has also written for Not The Nine O’Clock News, Alas Smith & Jones, The Armstrong and Miller Show, Kate & Koji among a multitude of others. He has also

written for a vast amount of comedy programmes on the radio - some of which he also appears in. Weekending and The News Huddlines were standout shows for me.

And it was from these experiences that Hamilton filled up two hours for us with anecdotes in his An Evening With Andy Hamilton show at Blackheath Halls.

He did, however, add in some real gags when he told his Top Five jokes, all of which had been told to him by other comedians (all name-checked).

So, after many decades of working in comedy, he is fully qualified to have this new stand-up show to take around the UK. He understands his crowd, asking for a hands-up count on how many people didn’t have to pay for their

travel here. But he can also appeal to the kiddies as he is the voice of Dr Elephant, the dentist in Peppa Pig. The second half allowed Andy to show his expertise at improvising when he took random questions from the audience, although they did most often remind him of an anecdote to relate - all of which were fun as well as informative.

And he sung! It was supposedly an ancient folk song but I suspect it was a comedy song from his own hand that he had given a medieval twist…

Andy is at ease with the stage and audiences and he made us feel very comfortable being there spending an enjoyable evening with him.

Tate, however, is not asking whether one is better than the other, but is showing the symbiotic relationship between the two.

Many of the 20th century’s finest artists are included and all with something to say about their connection with photography.

Warhol used photographs perhaps more than a brush, and it may have been quite some time since Hockney and his camera last stood before an easel.

Yes, some iconic photos will catch a moment in time that says so much more than the actual image depicts, just as many paintings do. Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother became the face of every farmer and family ruined by weather and political decisions in 1930s America, while Lucian Freud’s paintings of unnamed people placed the human form front and centre, sometimes with just the artist’s tools between the sitter and the viewer to eliminate any chance of a backstory, but to

show that this was a painting and nothing else.

Francis Bacon, and Pablo Picasso, on the other hand, tried to show their subjects from more than one angle in one painting, thereby making each piece of art more than a moment in time. Bacon does not hide the fact that his Three Studies for Portrait of Lucian Freud were done from photographs.

A photograph cannot reference historical facts or iconic like art does when you see artists’ influences in past Masters unless it has been studiously set out to tell a specific story. Jeff Wall’s rather fantastic A Sudden Gust of Wind is a well-planned tableau that gives the impression the photographer magically caught the scene by chance.

So, yes, there is very obviously a close relationship between contemporary art and photography, but the real question is if it was ever disputed.

Capturing the Moment seems to be a reason to get some great artwork together in one place, and I am all for that.

I was always amused at the name of the place where the townsfolk forecast their weather by what a groundhog does, because Gobbler’s Knob sounds hilarious, but I was more amazed when I found out that this was a real place with this real tradition!

TV Weatherman Phil Connors wasn’t so keen and hates this annual trip to Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney small town USA - where all his scientific research into what weather can be expected is disregarded for a hairy rodent who pokes his head out of his hole and either runs back in or stays.

He has no time for the people there and lets them know it.

When the Punxsutawney folk said they fear a blizzard, Phil Connors laughs in their faces because his own report told everyone where that blizzard was going to be and it was not in their town.

If this musical version of Groundhog Day is a fraction as good as the film then it will be fantastic, and with Tim Minchin on music and lyrics you are already halfway there, writes Michael Holland.

about everyone he meets, plus his cameraman and producer, Rita. Then, of course, the blizzard does hit town and the TV crew are stranded there.

The next morning his alarm goes off, the radio comes on and tells him it is Groundhog Day. He mocks their stupidity for playing yesterday’s tape, and leaves his boarding house to find that everything is occurring exactly

as it did the day before. Then the next day, and the next, and the next, and the next, and you get where this is going.

Connors is stuck in a time loop and after a while it is driving him crazy. He seeks medical help and over-medicates and resorts to killing himself in several nasty ways because he knows that he will always wake up in his room with the radio telling him it is Groundhog

Day. After a while realises that if he is having to live and relive the same day every day, he can use it in his favour to seduce women by gradually finding out their likes and dislikes and every Groundhog Day he will woo them again with all their favourite things until he gets them into bed. He even robs the bank and pays for sex workers to come

change from reality there…

Set in what appears to be a Boy Scout Jamboree where there is more than enough opportunity to ramp up the camp, and with all the levels of hierarchy needed for this play, the scene is soon set in Titipu - Little England.

Jobs and titles are handed out like an outgoing Prime Minister’s Honours List: Albert Barr (Aidan Nightingale) has more roles than he can handle but can still manage to put paid to the High Executioner’s (David McKechnie) plan to marry Miss Violet Plumb (Sam Kipling) depending on what hat he has on. But that is only the start of the problems.

A wandering minstrel (Declan Egan) wanders in and immediately falls in love with Miss Plumb, then pays for information about her, and then finds out she is betrothed to Mr Cocoa (High Executioner), and then his betrothed Kitty Shaw (Christopher Hewitt) turns up and threatens to reveal his little secret, and then I put down the notebook and let the farcical frolics wash over me in a sea of soprano and falsetto as the action spills out from the stage to up in the balcony and along the aisles.

There are a few familiar faces from Union Theatre works and previous all-male Gilbert & Sullivans, chosen by the director because Sasha knows they do a good job, and they are very ably supplemented by a troupe who all create their own highlights in this amazing show, under the guidance of Adam Haigh on choreography and Musical Director Anto Buckley.

This Victorian bundle of laughs, where you soon forget that there are no females, is perfect for this Victorian music hall.

Booking: www.wiltons.org.uk and party with him; he drink-drives as he does not fear arrest because he knows where he will wake up and what day it will be. And so it goes on, but very cleverly so, Andy Karl is stupendous as Phil Connors. He plays him as a sleaze bag rather then the laconic character Bill Murray portrayed in the film version, but all his wiles cannot get Rita to have sex with him because he can’t hide his Jack-the-Lad ways, despite all the French poetry he quotes to court her.

Eventually, he has to change his life completely round and be nice to everyone to get anywhere.

This is an hi-energy show where there seems to be a constant beat of music and movement. There are great visuals, excellent lighting effects and some exceptionally good illusions that foxed everyone, but above all, for me, it was Tim Minchin’s songs that raised this show up. You know Minchin will take no prisoners and give no quarter to get a message across, which makes this for grownups and not kiddies.

I could see the lady next to me who had been coming to the Old Vic regularly since the 60s when tickets were 1s 6d - flinch when Connors offered Rita ‘soixante-neuf ce soir’ just before she slapped him.

I could watch this show again and again.

Southwark Cathedral will host a Windrush Anniversary Service to celebrate the 500 Caribbean men and woman who arrived on British shores 75 years ago.

The service on Thursday, June 22, 2023, will celebrate the significant role the Windrush Generation played in shaping Southwark and Britain’s cultural landscape. It will include worship, music, reflections, readings and prayer.

Richard Reddie, Director of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, said: “The Windrush generation’s impact on Britain has been incalculable.

“For instance, they have transformed the spiritual climate on these shores since 1948; they have been a blessing to historic churches that were previously struggling numbers-wise, while Black Pentecostal congregations are bucking the trend of decline in attendance. This is to be celebrated, and God is to be praised!”

Hundreds of people arrived at Tilbury Docks aboard the HMT Empire Windrush on June 21, 1946, drawn by promises of employment in post-war Britain.

They faced endemic racism upon their arrival - but that didn’t stop them from

flourishing and playing a pivotal role in the nation’s politics, arts, music and sport.

Many settled in and around Southwark, particularly in Peckham and Brixton.

In June 2022, a monument to the Windrush generation has been unveiled at Waterloo Station, made by Jamaican sculptor Basil Watson.

Southwark’s first black Mayor Sam King MBE, who passed away aged 90 in 2016, arrived in the UK aboard the famous HMT Windrush in 1948.

He moved to Sears Street, Camberwell, working as a postman, before founding the West Indian Gazette and co-organising

A free festival in Potters Fields Park will celebrate the culture of Uzbekistan, with traditional music, art and live cooking from a Guinnessworld record-winning chef.

the internationally recognised Notting Hill Carnival. A Southwark Blue Plaque has since been erected in his honour - a scheme pioneered by Southwark News.

The Rt Revd Dr Rosemarie Mallett, Bishop of Croydon, said: “This anniversary offers a unique moment in the life of our nation when we can honour the legacy of the Windrush generation and hear how younger voices are building on their extraordinary heritage.

“We will be celebrating their achievements and expressing our deep gratitude – as well as acknowledging the struggles that they have faced.”

Greenwich's National Maritime Museum marks Refugee Week

On Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 the first-ever Uzbek Food and Culture Festival in London will take place in the park by Tower Bridge in Bermondsey.

To honour the culture of Uzbekistan, a country in central Asia, visitors will be able to experience a day of traditional Uzbek food, music and crafts.

The centrepiece will be their worldfamous “Plov” dish (a rice dish made with lamb, onions and carrots), prepared by celebrity chef Bahriddin Chustiy, who currently holds the Guinness Book World Record for having prepared over seven tonnes of Plov to date.

The festival brings together a line-up of guests from both Uzbekistan and the UK’s Uzbek diaspora community, including craftspeople and leading lights from the world of dance and music.

An art exhibition will showcase the intricate artistry and traditional craftwork of Uzbek textiles, clothing and accessories.

In addition to the exhibition, the festival's stage is set to offer audiences sounds and beats from the heart of Central Asia, with sets from popular artists and DJs from Uzbekistan.

One of the other chefs who will be cooking on the day, is Muzaffar Sadykov, CEO and Executive Chef of OshPaz, located in Mercato Metropolitano.

He expressed his excitement about the festival, saying: "It has been my dream to introduce the national Uzbek dish, plov, to London.

"I am incredibly proud to be part of building a bridge between Uzbekistan and the vibrant culinary scene of London. By cooking one tonne of plov alongside the talented Bakhriddin Chustiy group, I hope to leave a lasting impression on the taste buds and imaginations of Londoners and visitors alike."

This historic festival has been supported

by OshPaz Authentic Street Food, Bahriddin Chustiy, several other local UK companies, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Uzbekistan, and the Staff Network of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

It will take place from 12 pm until 7 pm in Potters Fields Park, Tooley Street near Tower Bridge, entry is free.

Southwark Playhouse presents SHEWOLVES after it was a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe

By Holly O'Mahony Refugee Week is a UK-wide event designed to celebrate the contributions of those who have arrived in the UK seeking sanctuary.

Running from June 19 - 25 this year, it’s also a chance to raise awareness of the ongoing refugee crisis, which sees thousands of people risk their lives every year as they make dangerous journeys to the UK in pursuit of a better, safer life.

The National Maritime Museum marks the annual event with a programme of family-friendly, educational activities, and this year, it’s running on a theme of compassion.

“The theme of compassion was decided

by Refugee Week UK, and this year marks the 25th anniversary of their annual Refugee Week festival,” says Charlotte Paddock, Adults and Communities Participation Manager for Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG).

“We were inspired by the theme of compassion to create space for dialogue around the multiple challenges facing people with refugee and asylum seeker status, and the need to make Britain a more welcoming place for those seeking sanctuary,” she explains.

“For Refugee Week this year we are exploring the theme of compassion through a series of creative workshops and talks as well as a film screening, all showcasing the courageous and inspiring journeys made by people seeking sanctuary.”

Join artist Jay Percy who’s running a creative workshop inspired by Netflix documentary The Swimmers, which tells the remarkable story of Sara and Yusra Mardini, two sisters and swimmers who escape the war in Syria with dreams of competing in the Olympics.

On June 21, the Museum is hosting a screening of Netflix documentary The Swimmers, the biographical drama telling the remarkable true story of the Mardini

The screening will be followed by a panel talk hosted by Iraqi-British writer Dalia Al-Dujaili and Syrian-Swiss filmmaker and actor Julie-Yara Atz. “The National Maritime Museum’s collection holds countless stories of migration and it is an important reminder that people have been migrating around the globe for a variety of reasons all throughout history,” adds Charlotte.

Described as a 'coming-of-age story for anyone who has ever been a teen', SHEWOLVES follows two teenage girls who feel the weight of the world on their shoulders.

Armed with a backpack full of Poptarts, 'Priya' (Gurjot Dhaliwal) and 'Lou' (Harriet Waters) embark on a secret expedition into the wild.

They want to fight back against the climate crises and make real change, but when the wilderness closes in around them, first they have to overcome their differences and make their voices heard.

The show received widespread praise after it premiered at Edinburgh Fringe last year, including being named one of the 'Best Shows of 2022' by The Stage.

Despite being at the start of their careers, the two young leads are already seeing success on and off

the stage. Harriet Waters - a recent graduate from Mountview in Peckham - has already appeared in an ITV Drama (Scott and Bailey) and Gurjot Dhaliwal, performed at the Vaults Festival this year (Asian Girls in Therapy) after graduating from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

It will appear at Southwark Playhouse in Borough from Wednesday, June 21 and Saturday, July 8 - brought to the stage by SHEWOLVES Productions, in association with Southwark Playhouse and JOP Arts.

Previous audiences drew similarities to the films Booksmart, Little Miss Sunshine and Thelma & Louise.

By Paul Weaver surrey’s BaTsMen rampaged their way to a total of 258-6 as they hammered the Sussex Sharks by 124 runs at the 1st central county ground, hove, last weekend, giving their run rate a boost on the way.

It was their highest-ever score in the Vitaly Blast – and the fourth highest by any side – beating their 250-6 against Kent in 2018. It left for dead their previous best against Sussex at Hove, the 221-8 they scored here in 2004.

The Sussex bowlers had no chance as Surrey replicated their form of two days before, when they piled up 236 against Glamorgan. And once again it was Laurie Evans (93) and Sam Curran (68) who created most of the mayhem, with a second wicket stand of 157, the highest for any wicket against Sussex. Surrey, one of the strongest sides in the competition, have lost just twice in eight outings – and one of those defeats, surprisingly, came against Sussex at The Oval last month.

Sussex had gone into the match fresh from their thrilling 4-run victory at Lord’s the previous evening, but still knowing they had to win virtually all their remaining fixtures to progress in the competition.

They got off to an encouraging start when Nathan McAndrew bowled Will Jacks with the last delivery of the opening over. But that was as good as it got for them.

The form of Evans, who scored a century in the Glamorgan game, was a painful reminder of how many top class white ball players Sussex have lost in recent seasons.

Evans was a member of the star-studded Sussex side that reached finals day in 2018, as was the Surrey captain last night, Chris Jordan.

After ten overs Surrey were 107 for one (they were 107 without loss at the same stage against Glamorgan). Evans reached his fifty off just 28 deliveries when he pulled Henry Crocombe to cow corner for six – over the hospitality tents in the southeast corner of the ground.

The 150 came up off the last ball of the 13th over, as Evans square-drove McAndrew for four. Curran was finally out at 163 when he edged Tymal Mills to short third man. He had hit six fours and four sixes, two in succession over wide mid-on.

Evans looked destined for his second hundred in three days but he was caught at wide mid-on by James Coles off the bowling of Crocombe. But for Surrey there was no loss of impetus as Jamie Overton thumped 24 runs off 11 balls and Tom

Curran 29 off nine, with three sixes and two fours. Crocombe and Mills went for 51 and 50 runs respectively, while Fynn Hudson-Prentice’s three overs cost 46. All the bowlers looked shell-shocked as they dragged themselves off the pitch.

Sussex needed 13 runs an over and their task looked hopeless, especially when they lost James Coles, pulling to backward square-leg, in just the second over. But after five overs they were 54 for one, and ahead of where Surrey had been at that stage. But then the impressive Tom Clark was stumped for a 23-ball 43. It needed something special from the Sharks captain Ravi Bopara. But he had scored just one when he attempted a slog-sweep against Sunil Narine and skied the ball to the

keeper.

The Sussex batsmen had to keep swinging in pursuit of their improbable target and, inevitably, the wickets tumbled as the required run rate soared to 20 an over. They were all out for 134 in the 15th over and after Clark, Tom Alsop and Danial Ibrahim tied for the second best score, 17.

Evans said: “It’s not often you get the chance to score two hundred in three days in this competition, but I fell just short today. I’m feeling in good shape. There have been bigger occasions for me, like finals days, but it’s been a very enjoyable couple of days.

“We feel a strong team and a strong squad. There are a lot of good players not playing, who are desperate to get in

the side. So that pushes us forward and makes us more hungry to make the most of the opportunities we’re given. Surrey is a good place to be.”

Sussex head Paul Farbrace added: “It was a contrast from last night, when we beat Middlesex. It was very ordinary bowling tonight, indefensible really.

“Surrey are a very, very good side, very powerful. I’m very envious of their batters striding out and looking like they’re going to hit us for four or six every ball. The thing that disappoints me most is our lack of nous. We bowled a lot of balls into the pitch, to the short side with the win blowing that way. We’ve got so much to learn. off 60 balls, but Dodd continued to flay a tiring attack before Khan dismissed him for 84, off 82 balls, with the score on 257. Patrick George, making a rare first team appearance, picked up the ninth wicket, and Khan finished off the innings to end with figures of 4-93 off 17.3 overs.

Lodwick finished with 2-23 off 14 overs, while Ramzan had 2-54 off ten. Valley End were all out for 277 off 63.3 overs, leaving Dulwich 56 overs to bat.

Dodd then opened the bowling and took two wickets in his first three overs, removing Moin Khan for 4 and Wankhade, who fell to a brilliant catch by Young in the gully for 12, having faced just six balls. Skipper Chris Purshouse and

Ollie Steele took the score to 98 before Steele fell to Young for 44, off 70 balls, Purshouse fell to James Barnard three overs later having batted obdurately for 28, off 69 balls, and Ramzan was leg before to Young in the next over to make it 109-5 after 29 overs. A breezy knock of 27 off 23 balls by Booth lifted the score to 142-6 after 34 overs.

It’s a consistent theme I’m talking about at the end of every T20 game. We want to help the players but they’ve also got to help themselves. They’ve got to learn but they’re not learning quickly enough and we’re being taught lessons.”

The visitors elected to bat but were held back by a superb opening spell by Harvey Booth and Jon Lodwick that saw only 20 runs on the board after 12 overs with Lodwick picking up the first wicket.

Former Millwall captain back in management – as chairman explains Millwall connection was key

Morison, 39, who was only recently in talks with Cardiff City to go back as their manager again, said he was “thrilled” to join the Upminster-based side.

The Urchins play in the Isthmian League Premier Division, the seventh tier of English football.

Hornchurch’s most recent claim to fame was winning the FA Trophy by beating Hereford United 3-1 at Wembley in 2021.

Hornchurch finished second last season – behind another of Morison’s former clubs, Bishop’s Stortford, who

were promoted to National League North – but then lost the play-off final to Aveley.

“I am thrilled and honoured to have taken on the role of first-team manager of Hornchurch,” Morison said.

“Myself and Anthony [Fenton, assistant manager] are excited to take on this new challenge and lead the team to new heights on and off the pitch.

“I am committed to bringing success to Hornchurch. I will work tirelessly with our players, coaching staff and management to ensure that we perform at our best and achieve our goals.

“I am passionate about football and believe that together, we can build a strong and successful team. I am excited to work with the existing players and

the wider Hornchurch community to create a culture of excellence on and off the pitch.

Chairman Sharp explained how the move came about.

“I had a number of conversations with Steve,” Sharp said. “He and I were then out of the country at different times and obviously, as a board, we reviewed all the applicants we had.

“To add complication to it, Steve was still involved in the Cardiff manager situation and was in active conversations to go back.

Rowett explained to the paper the plans for the rest of the summer.

“The players are back in on [June 28]. They’ll come back in for testing and see where they’re at,” Rowett said.

“It gives us a five-and-half-week build-up which is what I’ve always done. We follow a very similar pattern and plan.

“The players follow an off-season plan. As hard as pre-season is at

times, they do a lot of the hard yards off-season. They only really truly get 10 days to two weeks off and then they are back to doing different types of activities that gets them to the point where actually we don’t have to a lot of stuff when they get back in, they can get back down to football quite quickly, but obviously there is a physical element to it.

“We head to a training camp in Spain [in early July]. It’s a slightly different look to pre-season this year, but it’s all been organised and pre-planned. We’re looking forward

“Then, we had the final conversation when he said, 'Yeah, I'm really up for it, I really like this'.

“If we felt, as a board, he was doing this as a six-month gig to try and get back into the Football League, we wouldn't have made the decision.

“But you'll see that's not his intention at all. He is prepared to sign a decent contract with us and I think we will benefit significantly from having him at the club.

“From the first time I spoke with Steve I knew we had found our next manager. I was drawn in by the Millwall connection, but then so impressed by his experience, professionalism and how driven he is.

“I have loved listening to his plans of how he intends to take the club forward

and I love the fact he thinks nothing of dropping down to non-league to create opportunities going forward.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to in the game, from Rob Lee to Shaun Derry, speaks highly of Steve and I really can’t wait to get going. Steve brings Anthony as his assistant, who is also very well thought of in football, and I’m excited at the thought of the players Steve and Anthony will have access to and can bring to Hornchurch FC. “We have a great squad at the club and the players are very excited to meet Steve and see how he will help develop their careers and to that end I’m delighted to announce that Jamie Southon will join Steve’s management team which will undoubtedly help maintain the stability that we have grown to expect.”

By John Kelly MiLLWaLL are heading to spain in July for their preseason training camp – and boss gary rowett would like to have more new players on board ahead of the trip.

The Lions have gone to Portugal and Scotland and played behindclosed-doors friendlies in previous summers under Rowett.

The squad are back at Calmont Road at the end of this month, though it’s not a case of all rest

to it.

“It’s a case of trying to get some players in to fill the squad, bolster the squad and improve it.”

Rowett took a holiday in Greece last week, though his phone was never far out of reach as Millwall conduct their summer transfer business.

Queens Park Rangers manager Gareth Ainsworth said recently that he gets up to fifteen phone calls a day from agents offering players.

Rowett has learned to balance the workload, with head of football

operations Alex Aldridge and chief executive Steve Kavanagh often a first point of contact for agents and clubs looking to do deals.

“To be fair, as I get older I’m getting better. I leave a lot of it to the likes of Alex and let them get on with it.

Whereas one time I’d be ringing every agent trying to find out what’s going on,” Rowett said.

“So apart from one or two calls and the odd WhatsApp conversation, not too much, it was actually quite relaxed.”

Forward joins for seven-figure fee months after January move for 26-year-old fell through

By John Kelly KEVIN NISBET felt joining Millwall in January would have been “a bit too soon” after he had just recovered from a long-term knee injury.

The Lions and Hibernian agreed a deal but the proposed move was called off late into the month.

Nisbet, 26, only made his first appearance of the last campaign in December before going on to scored twelve goals in 20 games.

Millwall confirmed the signing of Scotland international Nisbet for an undisclosed seven-figure fee at the weekend. ““I’m delighted. I was going to come in January and I felt it was maybe a bit too soon after my injury,” Nisbet said.

“The club are long-term admirers and I’m glad to get it done now. As soon as I spoke to the gaffer I knew I wanted to come here. If it wasn’t January it was definitely going to be the summer.

“I’m a winner. I like to win games and I like to get the fans onside as quickly as possible in games – winning tackles and winning headers. I think the fans will be delighted to see me here.

“I kept a close eye on [Millwall’s finish to the season]. They were very unlucky on the final day of the season. It is about pushing for the play-offs this year.”

Lions manager Gary Rowett was delighted to get the deal done.

“It’s a fabulous addition for us. Kevin is a goal-scorer but also has so many other attributes to contribute to the squad,” Rowett said.

"When I’ve spoken to him you can tell he’s raring to go and excited to play in front of our fans.

"He thrives off that energy from the supporters and I’m sure they will get that exact same buzz from him as well.”

Director of football operations Alex Aldridge added: "Kevin is a player who we are delighted to add to the ranks at Millwall.

"We have been long-term admirers of him and feel he is a player who can add quality and goals to Gary's squad.

"Kevin has really bought into the project at the club and we look forward to seeing what he can do in a Millwall shirt.”

Meanwhile, Hibernian manager Lee Johnson gave his reaction to Nisbet’s move.

“We’re disappointed to lose Nizzy after he did so well for us on his return but understand that he wanted to go on a new adventure down south,” Johnson said.

“Although he will be missed, this presents a new opportunity for someone else to step into that role. We thank him for his contribution and wish him all the best in England.”

Hibernian chief executive Ben Kensell added: “After deciding to stay in January, Kevin informed us that he wanted to leave the Football Club this summer, which we understood.

“Following those discussions, we had to ensure we got the best possible deal for him.

“We’re happy with the fee we received, and we wish him all the best for the future with Millwall.”

ROMAIN ESSE started as England under-18s scored in the last minute to defeat Australia in the second game of their tournament in Portugal last weekend.

Esse wore the No.7 shirt as Adrian Blake scored in the 90th minute after Australia had come from two goals down.

Zach Marsh’s double had put Neil Ryan’s side in control.

Esse also started and scored in England’s first game against Norway which also saw a late goal in a 2-2 draw.

Hotspur’s Rio Kyerematen levelled with two minutes left.

AIDOMO Emakhu will have to wait to see if he will make his Ireland under-21 debut this week – after Tuesday’s scheduled friendly opponents failed to show up.

Emakhu, 19, is in Jim Crawford’s 26-man squad for friendlies against Ukraine and Kuwait in Austria. They were also due to face Gabon.

Crawford had wanted to give all of the squad matches minutes.

“Hugely disappointed,” Crawford said. “Finding out so late in the day about it does not help because we had been planning everything, team meetings, training sessions to play this particular game.

“To be told so late in the day is a real mess.

“For me in this window, I wanted three games, I wanted to bring 26 players over to give them an opportunity of playing for the Ireland Under-21s “And now, two games with 26 players, there is a lot of thinking to do.

“Players are disappointed, the whole staff are disappointed. Match contracts were signed, stamped, and to find out this morning is very disappointing.”

By John Kelly MiLLWaLL have ticked off a major priority area early in the summer with the signing of a centre-forward – though the club are left to “wonder” what might have been had they been able to bolster that position in January.

The Lions confirmed the signing of Scotland international striker Kevin Nisbet from Hibernian last weekend.

Nisbet, 26, joined for an undisclosed seven-figure fee and a new club record.

Nisbet has signed a long-term deal, with the Lions having the policy of not

disclosing the number of seasons on a contract.

Millwall wanted to sign a forward in January, and Nisbet was their number one target. The deal had been agreed between the clubs and Nisbet travelled down to SE16.

But there was an issue with the medical and the move was called off late in the month. Nisbet had only returned from a long-term knee injury the previous month.

Former Dunfermline striker Nisbet then proved his fitness and quality as he scored twelve goals in 20 games as Lee Johnson’s Hibs finished fifth in the Scottish Premiership to secure a place in the qualifying rounds of the Europa

Conference League.

The collapsed move at the start of the year meant Millwall were left with just one natural centre-forward in Tom Bradshaw after Benik Afobe left for United Arab Emirates.

Although Bradshaw performed brilliantly and ended the campaign on seventeen goals, the Lions couldn’t do enough to finish in the top six, missing out by just a point.

Manager Gary Rowett was asked by this paper if there was a sense of what might have been after being unable to secure a striker for the second half of the season.

“We spoke about it in January,” Rowett said. “We knew we only had Tom with

“It was an area that we wanted to strengthen. January was January and it’s obviously very difficult to do. But of course you always wonder whether those extra goals would have made a little bit of a difference.”

Millwall are still looking to add to their attack this summer. Rowett wants to be flexible and the addition of Nisbet means he has the option of playing two up front, or Bradshaw and Nisbet will be competing with each other for one centre-forward spot.

The Lions are aiming to add quality in wide attacking areas in a bid to finally nail a play-off spot.

A number of young Lions are in demand and Millwall recognise the value of that route to develop their players.

Gary Rowett has added striker Kevin Nisbet to his squad and there will be more arrivals on the way.

Rowett wants to have as many new players on board as possible before the squad and staff head to a training camp in Spain in early July.

That will push some of the younger players down the pecking order, though they are more likely to get their first-team chance after the club missed out on promotion. Had they achieved their Premier League dream then it would have spark a wave of incomings, further limiting the youngsters’ opportunities.

Millwall have high hopes for their academy players, especially after they won the Professional Development League national title under Kevin Nugent last month.

Now the club has to decide whether to make similar plans to the ones for Danny McNamara, who had a number of loan moves that eventually helped him break into the first team, or Billy Mitchell who the Lions decided to keep at home and he is now a regular.

Players such as Abdul Abdulmalik, top-scorer for Millwall in that under-21 campaign, and captain Chin Okoli are getting to the point when they need senior football.

Meanwhile, midfielder George Evans could be available for transfer in this window.

Evans, 28, has never been able to force his way into the first team on a consistent basis since he joined from Derby County in the 2021 winter transfer window.

The Manchester City academy product has made 53 league appearances in two-and-a-half seasons, 31 of them starts. Evans has scored two goals for the Lions.
