SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has hired a private security company to run a night-time patrol service across the borough in a bid to crack down on antisocial behaviour.

The patrols will run between 6pm and 2am seven nights a week and will see squads of around ten uniformed officers deployed to parts of the borough where crime and antisocial behaviour is the highest.

The scheme, which is being operated by Kingdom Services Limited, a community focused security company, will run for an initial nine months and will complement the council’s existing Community Warden team of 32 officers.

It comes as part of a broader crackdown on illegal activity by Southwark Council, which is also currently consulting on a policy

which would give council officers powers to fine people for engaging in antisocial behaviour.

The borough also recently benefited from an uplift in the number of neighbourhood officers policing its streets, with new teams assigned to Peckham and Walworth by the Met last month.

Councillor Natasha Ennin, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Neighbourhoods at Southwark Council, said: “We know that feeling safe is just as important as being safe, and this new night-time patrol service will help deliver both.

“By deploying teams where they are most needed, we’re making sure our communities feel supported and protected. Alongside our community wardens, the new service will bring extra reassurance and visibility, helping Southwark remain a safe place to live, work and visit.”

Number of homeless children in Southwark has soared by 77 per cent since 2020, report finds

CHILD HOMELESSNESS has risen by 77 per cent since 2020 in Southwark with 1 in 20 children in the borough now living in temporary accommodation, a report has found.

Between 2020 and 2024 the number of children in temporary accommodation in the borough went up from 1,900 to 3,500 children.

It comes amid a crisis of affordable housing in London, with more than 19,000 families currently on the waiting list in Southwark for a new council home.

Despite making up just 1 in 200 households nationally, Southwark accounts for 1 in 30 of all temporary accommodation households in England.

Southwark Liberal Democrat opposition leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain described the figures as "shameful" and accused the local council of "allowing the problem to spiral out of control".

A spokesperson for London Councils, which represents all 32 boroughs in the capital, said that "urgent government action" was needed to "tackle the fundamental factors behind homelessness.

"This includes further work to boost

delivery of affordable housing in the capital."

The report drew on interviews with parents, teachers and medical experts, highlighting the harms experienced by children in temporary accommodation, including mental health problems, malnutrition, and difficulties in school.

Despite the existence of legal duties for local authorities to protect children in temporary accommodation, the report claimed that vulnerable children are falling through gaps in services, with a lack of communication between schools, the health and social care system meaning key information about their welfare is being missed.

Hollie Wright a researcher at the New Economics Foundation which authored the report, said local authorities were failing to fulfil their legal duties to protect children. “The damage living in temporary accommodation inflicts on children’s physical and mental wellbeing is welldocumented," she said.

"But this harm is further exacerbated when services are stuck operating in silos and legal duties to protect children are not meaningfully fulfilled. Cash-strapped local councils are struggling to meet the housing needs of families. We need intervention from national government to deal with this crisis.

"But in the meantime, there are steps that local authorities like Southwark can take to protect children in temporary accommodation.”

The report called on Southwark Council to implement a “duty to communicate”, which would mean services like housing, health and social care would have to communicate when placing children in temporary accommodation.

This would also involve a dedicated role or team in local authorities to provide families with a single point of contact when navigating temporary accommodation.

Southwark Council is set to spend £37.2 million on temporary accommodation this year. The spokesperson for London Councils said it estimated that boroughs collectively spend £4m every day on temporary accommodation for 183,000 homeless people, "which is a key challenge to their financial stability".

Cllr Victor Chamberlain, Leader of Southwark Liberal Democrats said: “These figures should shame Labour. Southwark has one of the highest rates of child homelessness in the country, with thousands of children growing up in unsuitable, unstable housing. The consequences for their health, education and wellbeing are

devastating and long-lasting.

"No child should be without a safe, secure home — yet Labour has allowed this crisis to spiral out of control. Under Labour’s watch schools are closing in droves. In my ward Labour approved a luxury development of 900 homes with just 17% genuinely affordable homes and 12% family homes – they’re not looking after families.

"We strongly endorse the New Economics Foundation’s call for a dedicated Temporary Accommodation Family Support Coordinator to ensure children don’t fall through the cracks. Southwark Council must adopt this idea without delay.

"We have also asked the Overview and Scrutiny Committee to review this report in full so that councillors, officers and partners face up to the scale of the crisis and put families and children first.

FAMILY OF LOST BERMONDSEY WWII HERO COME FORWARD 80 YEARS AFTER HE WAS SHOT DOWN EXCLUSIVE

By Evie Flynn THE FAMILY of a Bermondseyborn WWII reconnaissance photographer - one of the ‘Southwark Four’ who never returned - has finally been traced after a public appeal.

William Arthur “Bill” Fisher was one of four young men from Southwark who joined the RAF’s secret Photographic Reconnaissance Unit (PRU), who flew behind enemy lines in unarmoured Spitfires to snap clandestine photos of Nazi operators.

Last year, we appealed for information about the ‘Southwark Four’- Frederick Legon, William Fisher, Frederick James and Lesley Baker, who all served in the PRU. The boys were from Walworth, Bermondsey and Blackfriars.

The PRU, formed on 24 September 1939, operated highly dangerous, photographic reconnaissance operations and captured nearly 26 million images of enemy operations throughout the war.

The intelligence the PRU provided was used in the Cabinet War Rooms underneath the treasury and was instrumental in the planning of major operations such as D-Day and locating the site of the V1 and V2 rocket launching site at Peenemünde.

They also had one of the lowest survival rates of the war - with a death rate of nearly fifty percent.

Last year, Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, wrote to everyone in the constituency who shared the same last name as the pilots. However, the search was unsuccessful.

That was until Brenda Welch, niece of William (Bill) Fisher got in touch with us.

Brenda, now 87, last saw Bill when she was just three-years-old in April 1941, at her home in Worthing, West Sussex.

WILLIAM FISHER – STILL LISTED AS MISSING IN ACTION:

William Arthur Fisher was born in Bermondsey, the son of Arthur and Phyllis Fisher. Brenda explains that Bill grew up at 3 Banyard Road, just off Southwark Park.

Bill had one sister, Brenda’s mother, Connie, born in 1912 and one brother, Edward, born in 1928.

Bill went to Keeton Road school, which would later be used during the Blitz as shelter and was bombed in September 1940. It is currently home to Charter School Bermondsey.

Brenda still has a school report of Bill’s from Keeton Road, which described him as “a most willing and trustworthy pupil showcasing considerable intelligence.”

After leaving Keeton Road School, Bill had an apprenticeship as a photolithographer with Amalgamated Press, which he completed in 1935.

Brenda’s family have described Bill as “a keen boy scout as a lad and always a keen photographer.”

He was selected to train as an RAF Photographer and was posted in Africa and was responsible for the camera operation on the RAF Beaufighter aircraft used in desert conditions.

On 6 April 1942, William and his pilot took off from RAF Maaten Bagush in Egypt for a reconnaissance of Crete.

They were intercepted by Ltn Wilhelm Schieter of 7./JG27 who shot down Williams’ unarmed aircraft with the loss of both crewmen. William is still missing in action to this day.

“I have a vivid memory of him the last time he was with us all at Easter 1941, probably because he brought my sister and me Easter eggs in china egg cups,” Brenda says. “My egg cup was shaped like an elephant and is still a treasured possession!”

When Brenda was still a child, her family moved to New Zealand in the 1950s, and she has returned to London numerous times, although doubts she will be able to come again.

THE OTHER LOCAL HEROES:

The search is still on for families of the other three Southwark men: Frederick Legon, Frederick James and Lesley Baker.

FREDERICK LEGON:

Frederick Vernon Legon was born in St Olave's, Bermondsey, the son of Albert and Martha Legon. On April 10, 1944, Fred and his navigator F/o John Swann took off from RAF Benson to

photograph Friedrichshafen, a German city on the borders with Austria and Switzerland.

The crew were met by several German fighter planes, which shot down Fred’s unarmed Mosquito. Fred, aged just 24, sadly perished and is buried in Verdunsur-Meuse.

FREDERICK JAMES:

Frederick Edward James was born in St. Mary Newington, Southwark, served in the PRU during the war, and is believed to have survived the war - but little is known about his post-war life.

LESLEY BAKER:

Lesley Bernard Baker was born in Walworth, and is known to have served in the PRU, but little else is currently know about his wartime service, or post-war life.

MEMORIALISATION:

The Spitfire AA810 have been leading a campaign since 2019 to put the achievements of the PRU on the map and see a physical memorial erected in London.

MPs also called for a permanent memorial, including 75 Conservatives, 50 from Labour, and others from the Lib Dems, DUP, SNP, Plaid Cymru and Alliance.

In May 2024, Neil Coyle MP urged the Commons to commemorate the PRU: “The RAF’s Photographic Reconnaissance Units has never been recognised for its contribution to allied success.” He urged colleagues to debate “the ongoing need for formal recognition of the PRU and its

courageous crews”.

The site for the memorial has been secured ‘in principle’ and will be outside the entrance to the Churchill War Rooms, underneath the Treasury. The campaign is currently in the planning and design stages.

By Issy Clarke THE CANADA Water Masterplan has ‘stalled’ according to the head of the project for British Land, claiming new planning laws and affordable housing policies have left the developer struggling to turn a profit.

Construction work has shuddered to a halt because of mounting of bureaucracy, including building safety regulations and affordable housing policies, the head of the project for British Land Roger Madlin recently told a podcast.

Asked about the impact of new building laws on the Canada Water development, Mr Madlin told the Professional Practice Podcast last month they had “stopped it entirely".

British Land is the developer behind the £4 billion regeneration of Canada Water, which includes a new town centre, more than 3,000 homes, 40 new buildings, and three clusters of high-rise towers.

Planning permission for the Masterplan was granted in 2020, which included a promise to provide 35 per cent affordable housing. So far, 79 affordable homes have been completed on the site, as well as the new Canada Water Leisure Centre, which is set to open on September 1.

But in January, the developer slammed on the brakes, appealing to the council for permission drastically to alter the original application.

Unveiling plans collectively to add 70 storeys to buildings across the site, British Land said it had been left with no choice, due to new laws requiring buildings higher than six storeys to have at least two staircases.

A decision will now be made by Southwark Council on whether to wave through the changes, which likely will not be before Christmas at the earliest.

Worryingly, the developer also cast doubt on whether its original promise of 35 per cent affordable housing would be reached, stating it hoped to provide more low-cost homes above the "10 per cent that is currently viable".

SAFETY REGULATIONS HAVE 'GONE TOO FAR TRYING TO REDUCE RISK’

Mr Madlin took aim at the Building Safety Act 2022, legislation developed in the aftermath of the devastating Grenfell Tower fire, which claimed 72 lives in 2017.

“The building industry needed better regulation, better inspection,” said Mr Madlin. “But some people, myself included, would suggest we have gone too far in trying to reduce the risk.”

Asked if he felt private developers had been “raided” in recent years in relation to new construction requirements, Mr Madlin said: “They’ve just stopped developing.

“If it doesn’t make enough money, we’re not going to do it. It’s not that we’re going to do it for a lesser profit - we’re not going to make any profit. The risks are huge now with the Building Safety Act.” Comparing Canada Water to the redevelopment of King’s Cross by British Land ten years ago, Mr Madlin said the volume of documentation had “doubled”.

“There are many hundreds of guidance notes, policy documents we had to comply with. Some were overlapping, some contradictory, some duplications. And you ask yourself – what are we getting better?

I would argue nothing.”

“The problem is that the Building Safety Regulator is working too slowly. It needs to pick up pace,” said local MP Neil Coyle when asked whether he agreed that the government's planning system was stifling development.

He continued that parts of the planning system were “nonsense and misused”.

“We had a social housing development blocked in Southwark because the box wasn’t ticked to show that a floodplain assessment had been done on those homes. The assessment had been done legally, but the box hadn’t been ticked. It is really frustrating.”

Asked if he felt the developer had a point regarding the volume of planning paperwork Jerry Flynn, a spokesperson for the 35 per cent housing campaign group, said: “No one likes the paperwork

involved in planning applications, but it's only right that these major developments are properly examined.

“Developers could also make their own lives a bit easier by making proposals that better met the needs of the communities they affect. Reducing the amount of affordable housing the way British Land have done on Canada Water is bound to generate even more paperwork, but that is their choice.”

'ONLY 8 PER CENT OF HOUSEHOLDS IN SOUTHWARK CAN AFFORD THESE HOMES'

In comments appearing to suggest the developer could roll back on its earlier promise of 35 per cent affordable housing, Mr Madlin said developers “just cannot deliver [that subsidy] in places where you’re building six storeys and above any more.”

In a report published in January, British Land said it hoped to be able to “increase the level of affordable homes above the currently viable 10 per cent"; well below its earlier promise of 35 per cent when the scheme was approved in 2020.

Referring to the loss of profit generated when developers build homes for social rent, Mr Madlin claimed affordable housing required “somewhere between a £300,000 and £400,000 subsidy – that is taking away from a profit that developers don’t think they are going to make.”

He said that land on the Canada Water site cost an average £150 per square foot – rising to as much as £900 once the cost of infrastructure, the Community Infrastructure Levy and Southwark Council’s 35 per cent minimum of affordable housing had been taken into account. Translated into the cost of an average two-bedroom flat, that would

work out at roughly £720,000 market value pre-profit.

Mr Madlin continued that he “really did not want to build apartments that no one can afford,” but said the planning system had left developers facing little choice.

"We haven't got access to that data, so we can't refute what he is saying," said Mr. Flynn, but questioned whether it was "right for developers like British Land to push rising building costs back onto the local community, by denying them affordable housing.

"Berkeley Homes are trying the same thing on the Aylesham development in Peckham. Southwark Council must stick to its guns and insist on 35 per cent affordable housing; this is already lower than their 50 per cent strategic target."

Southwark Council’s planning laws state that new developments must contain 35 per cent affordable housing at a minium, which includes the cheapest social rent housing and homes set at intermediate rents (between social and market costs).

But recently there have been instances of major developers stating that their schemes will only be profitable with less than that.

In December last year, Berkeley Homes, the developer behind the demolition of the Aylesham Centre in Peckham, slashed the proportion of affordable housing on the site from 35 to 12 per cent.

Like British Land, the developer said the revised plans were due to “rising costs, exacerbated by the length of the planning process”.

CURRENT SYSTEM IS A 'REAL MESS' FOR DEVELOPERS AND LOCAL PEOPLE

One area where British Land and the 35 per cent campaign would find common

cause for agreement is that the system as it stands is fundamentally broken.

“The system we have at the moment means developers are always going to have a ready reason to refuse affordable housing," said Jerry Flynn. "Either we have to stop relying on them or insist more strongly that they build what they have promised.

“What is happening at the moment is the developer is pushing their woes back onto the local community, saying: ‘our costs are going up so you are going to get less affordable housing'."

"It's a real mess," said Mr Madlin, referring to the effect of the planning system on Britain's supply of affordable housing. "People just need to remember where we were, not 50 years ago – not Homes for Heroes, not New Towns. Where we were 20 years ago. It’s not surprising when you look at what has happened why we are just not able to build affordable homes in London."

MP Coyle said he was pushing the government to improve the planning process. He said that “making sure the safety regulations don’t block developments is crucial to success – especially if we’re going to hit our ambitious target of building 1.5 million new homes.”

British Land did not comment when asked officially to confirm the halt to the masterplan or if the development could contain as little as 10 per cent affordable housing, but a spokesperson for the developer previously told us: "Given the independent reviews currently taking place, and the ongoing discussions around Affordable Housing delivery, we are not yet in a position to comment on the level of Affordable Housing which will be secured as part of the S73 application."

By Issy Clarke DISABLED PEOPLE are being forced to slide down the stairs on their bottom if they want to use Peckham Rye Station, according to appalled residents and business owners.

In 2023, Network Rail was granted planning permission to construct new lifts and additional staircases to the platforms. The plans would also have involved opening up the back of the station to create a new entrance leading into the ticket hall.

However in July the Department for Transport announced the £40 million upgrade had been put on hold, saying it needed to "prioritise funding on the schemes that will make the greatest difference for passengers and economic growth as soon as possible."

Campaigners say the delay means it will be "eight years at the earliest," before Peckham Rye station finally gets an upgrade.

PLATFORMS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE WIDENED: "IT'S LIKE A TIN OF SARDINES"

The upgrade would have addressed this by expanding the rear of the station, introducing additional staircases and lifts for the first time, and widening the platforms and passageways.

"Quite often you will find two trains coming in at once on Platforms 1 and 2, each of them escorting hundreds of people, and they are all trying to force their way down the single staircase," said Iain Johncock, a regular user of the station who is campaigning for Peckham Rye to be prioritised when Network Rail funds next become available.

"The scheme we want to see implemented would have created a second access point on the platform so it would split the passengers into two different groups, which would help."

Platforms 1 and 2 are located on an island platform and connected with the station by a single staircase. Asked if he had ever heard of an accident happening on the platform, Iain said he hadn't but was "very surprised there hasn't been one."

"I take the 7.44am Thameslink service into central London every morning and it is like a tin of sardines," said another Peckham resident, Andreea Vasilcin. She added that "no one actually knows the true number of people coming through the station because a lot of people slip out without paying through a side gate, which is often just left open and unsupervised."

Alongside concerns about overcrowding, the upgrades would have addressed the lack of step-free access in the station, which currently sees the disabled and elderly forced to slide down the stairs on their bottom.

The nearest alternative is Denmark Hill Station in Camberwell, a 15-minute bus ride away.

Terry Titheradge, 75, who lives behind the station, said he used to take the train to Bromley to visit his family several times a week but now has to cough up a hefty taxi fare after an accident left his wife wheelchairbound two years ago.

"It costs me £70 now just to go to Bromley in a taxi and back, when we’ve both got Freedom Passes we could use, but we can’t access the station," he said. "I don’t drive, I’m

"I recently witnessed a lady in a wheelchair get off the train in Platform 1. She was lost and didn’t know what to do. She got out of her chair and a young man carried the chair down for her while she came down 40-odd steps on her bottom, hanging onto the handrail. It was shocking."

We spoke to one trader who was disappointed to hear the upgrade had been delayed. Jenny, of Jenny's Kitchen inside Rye Lane Market, says she has customers who arrive from all over London to try her salads, and some of them can't get off at Peckham Rye. "I work on my own, so I have to lock up my shop and take the salad to them," she said. "When I ask them why they can't come to the shop, they say it's because there isn't a lift and they have to get someone to help them down the stairs."

Long-time Peckham resident and community activist Eileen Conn said she reckoned it would be "at least another eight years" before the station received an upgrade because of restructuring required at the back of the building.

"That will take at least four years, and the government has said there will be no decisions about money until the next Parliament which is another four years. So at the earliest, a decision would be made in the first year of the next Parliament.”

Asked if it could provide assurances that the upgrade of Peckham Rye would be prioritised by the government, the Department for Transport said the scheme would be kept "under review as part of our pipeline of schemes for potential progression in future as funding becomes available."

To help lift pressure in the meantime, campaigners are calling on TfL to speed up proposals to increase the number of trains on the section of the Windrush line which serves Peckham Rye from four to six an hour.

However TfL recently admitted that plans to improve the frequency on the part of the Windrush line serving Peckham Rye will not be introduced until May 2029 at the earliest.

Yet the Windrush line between Crystal Palace and Highbury & Islington will see an increase in frequency much sooner than that, with plans to raise the number of

"If this increase could be bought forward it would seriously alleviate congestion because you would have the same number of people in more trains, so therefore fewer people getting off the train at the same time," said Iain.

"Peckham is always the last to receive investment and is the first to be cut. This is yet another example."

The accessibility upgrade being delivered by Network Rail is separate to the work to restore Peckham Rye's Victorian features.

Local architect Benedict O Looney has been working on the project since 2009, with the support of Network Rail, the Railway Heritage Trust and Southwark Council A 'prelude' to the modernisation of the Grade II-listed station, his work involved restoring the existing Victorian fabric of the station.

During the works, he and his team of architects uncovered a buried staircase, an abandoned billiard room, and a stunning facade.

Separately, in 2011 the council and the Mayor of London announced they were embarking on a £3-5 million project to upgrade the square outside the station.

Later this year, the worn-out 1930s shopping arcade will be pulled down, creating an open square in front of the station entrance.

By Evie Flynn ON 6 September, Pasley Park in Walworth will transform into a free community fete. But, the park also holds a hidden past and rich history, starting life as a zoo and having a direct link to a WW1 soldier…

Situated between Kennington and Walworth Road, it began life in 1831 as the Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens, one of London’s first zoos. It was home to around

170 animal species and attracted 8,000 visitors per day.

On 6 September, there will be a free community fete from 12pm – 5pm, with loads of free activities for kids and families: • The much-loved Dog Show from 1:152:15pm. If you would like to enter your pooch, registration is from 12pm-1pm • Music, dance, art, crafts and art workshops • Free face painting for kids

• Food stalls with cuisines from all around the world This year, the fete is themed around Sergeant Frank Stubbs, from Chapter Road in Walworth, who is memorialised in the park for his career as a soldier during the First World War. On 25 April 1015, Sgt Frank Stubbs’ platoon stormed a beach on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. Frank led his men up the cliffs after cutting through wire entanglements and heavy machine gun

bombardment.

However, they fell short of the rendezvous point and Frank was killed by a bullet to the head, aged 27. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his acts of bravery that day.

He joined the army at a very young age and went into the 1st Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers. Having served in India, Frank was an experienced soldier when his Battalion was posted to the Dardanelles in 1914. His Platoon achieved their target during the battle where he fell, and all his men were in agreement that his courageous actions to scale the heights were worthy of the Victoria Cross.

The Friends of Pasley Park and Southwark Kaleidoscope have collaborated to put on the community fete, receiving funding from Southwark

Council Neighbourhood Fund, North Southwark Environmental Trust and St Saviour’s charity.

Peta Steel, the Co-Chair of the Friends of Palsey Park said: “Pasley Park is proud to stage this event, bringing our community together and reminding people of the bravery of one of our own local heroes Frank Stubbs who lived in Chapter Road”.

In the park, you can see two stone ostriches, which pay homage to its zoological past. The gardens were eventually built over but a small park was created in amidst the housing developments.

Local Democracy Reporter SUPPORT FOR a London-wide tourist tax appears to be growing with the Lib Dems and Green Party on the London Assembly backing calls for the Mayor to be given powers to implement one.

The Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, continues to support a “modest overnight accommodation levy” for any visitors to the capital, his office said on Monday (August 11), as a new report urged the government to give local leaders the power to impose the tax.

In England, local councils currently do not have the power to introduce a tourist tax, but the Autonomy think-tank has told ministers that giving local leaders the necessary powers would reduce the strain on public services.

Several London councils, including Southwark, Greenwich and Brent, have called for borough-wide levies in recent months, though Southwark councillors passed an amended motion seeking only to do so as part of a city-wide tax.

But the government has continued to resist calls for local tourist taxes, and this week confirmed there were no plans to introduce a tourism tax in England.

In June, alongside other Mayors of major cities, Mr Khan said: “London attracts millions of visitors every year who come here to experience our world class museums and galleries, visit our historic

Last month a YouGov survey commissioned by the Greater London Authority (GLA) Oversight Committee found that 41 per cent of Londoners backed the Mayor’s Office having the powers to levy a tourism tax.

Democrat group on the London Assembly, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “It’s past time London just got on with it and introduced a tourism tax – a small sum for tourists, which would add up to a big investment in our city.

Manchester’s done it, Liverpool’s done it – it’s time we joined them.”

A spokesperson for the Green Party on the London Assembly told the LDRS: “We

will ask hotels and bed and breakfasts to opt in to a modest nightly levy of 50p, with the potential of raising £50 million annually.

“This funding would be dedicated to supporting initiatives throughout our manifesto, aiming to enrich and equalise access to arts, sports, and culture, beginning with areas with the least access to local activities.”

But Reform UK Assembly Member Alex Wilson told the LDRS: “Sadiq Khan has failed London. Due to his incompetence, tourists from Australia, France, Canada – even Mexico – are being warned to ‘exercise caution’ when visiting the UK because ‘petty crime is common, including pickpocketing’.

“Slapping a tourist tax on top of this will only drive visitors away and cripple London’s economy further.”

In 2017, the London Finance Commission estimated that a tourist levy could yield anywhere from £77 million to £240 million annually in London.

The Conservative group on the London Assembly declined to comment on whether they supported or opposed a tourist tax in the capital.

A Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government spokesperson said: “There are currently no plans to introduce a tourism tax in England.

"Places including London can already choose to introduce a levy on overnight stays through the Accommodation Business Improvement District model.”

CANADA WATER’S SUMMER ITINERARY CONTINUES...

CANADA WATER is fast becoming one of South London’s bubbliest neighbourhoods - and is closing the summer with art installations and the opening of a brand new leisure centre.

Showcasing summer in full bloom is Trumpet Flowers – a giant, interactive light-and-sound installation making its UK debut until 22 September.

The towering trumpet-shaped blooms, created by Australian artists Amigo & Amigo, light up and play melodies when activated by passersby. Part art, part playground, the design speaks (quite literally) to all age groups.

Film fanatics and sport spectators can enjoy the Canada Water Screen, showing Cool Runnings this Saturday and coverage of the Women’s Rugby World Cup until 27 September.

Foodies can eat their hearts out at Corner Corner, the new cultural venue from the team behind Printworks, which draws together street food favourites such as Chick N Sours and Masa Tacos with live jazz every Saturday night.

For anyone curious about the future of London-grown produce, the chance to tour London’s largest indoor vertical farm is now possible via bookings on the Corner Corner’s website.

Padel courts are also open daily for those who’d rather get moving. While the nearby Surrey Docks Fitness and Watersports Centre is offering kayaking, rowing and swimming.

A brand new leisure complex has been built in the heart of Canada Water to replace the 60-year old Seven Islands Leisure Centre located over the road.

The new centre contains a 25-metre swimming pool with eight lanes – shorter, but wider, than the 33-metre pool at Seven Islands.

There is also a second, smaller pool in a separate room designed for learners with a movable floor.

The new gym is on the ground floor and has plenty of natural light, with more than 150 pieces of gym equipment, many of which have adaptations designed to make them more accessible for disabled people.

The most eye-catching addition is the brand new four-court sports hall with space for football, badminton and more – a huge upgrade from Seven Islands, which never had one.

There are three group studios, including a spinning studio decked out with a sound system and pulsing lights, and a studio exclusively for yoga and pilates.

Those willing to pay out a bit extra can buy a premium membership which costs £57.99 a month and includes 14-day priority booking for classes (compared to a 7-day booking window for those on the standard membership).

Visit fire station this Friday

By Evie Flynn OLD KENT Road Fire Station will be opening their doors this Friday 29 August for families to meet the firefighters and have a look around the station.

Firefighters will be there to teach fire safety advice, talk to the firefighters to learn more about their important job.

You can have a look around the station and there will be various things on display, like aerial ladders and a fire engine and you might get the chance to sit in.

There will be a Road Traffic Collision (RTC) demonstration and you can speak to London Fire Brigade Cadets, which

gives young people the chance to learn about the fire service in a safe and friendly environment.

There will also be a bouncy castle alongside food and drinks stalls from local businesses.

Money raised will be given to the Fire Fighters Charity, who support the health and wellbeing of serving and retired fire service personnel.

The team at OKR Fire Station want the station to be at the heart of the community, so bring the whole family along.

Peckham and Nunhead’s Free Film Festival

By Evie Flynn FROM 29 August to 7 September, the Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival is returning for its 16th year, bringing free entertainment to the SE15

community.

With 18 films over 10 days, the films are screened at numerous indoor and outdoor venues across the area. Completely volunteer-led, all events are completely free to attend, championing the ethos that there should never be a barrier to discovering new films or revisiting old

favourites.

Neal Browne, co-chair of the Festival, says: “We’ve got a packed schedule of films on offer - from Hollywood blockbusters to horror, from family friendly animation to compelling documentaries, and much more.”

The lineup is truly a diverse mix, with events, workshops and screenings.

On 27 August, there is a pre-festival movie night quiz at the Ivy House in Nunhead, designed to test your cinematic knowledge.

Films include Phantom of the Open, the true story of Maurice Flitcroft, an optimist who gained entry to the British Open Golf Championship despite being a complete novice, screened at Aquarius Golf Club.

On 3 September at Peckhamplex Cinema, there will be a short film night, designed to showcase local and independent talent, with a diverse programme of themes. The 2023 adaptation of The Colour Purple, a love story of resilience based on the novel and Broadway musical and a tale of one woman’s journey to independence, shows on 5 September at the Copleston Centre.

If you are feeling brave, Nosferatu (2024), a dark reimagining of the original film is being screened outside at Nunhead Cemetery. This unusual outside venue is a fan-favourite amongst festival-goers, with this year's film chosen by the public back in May. It’s not just screenings that are free, either. On 30 August, there is a One

Minute Film Challenge workshop at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, open to all ages and experiences.

Budding filmmakers can film a sequence based on a given theme, edit and narrate it for an audience.

“Not only are we returning to some of our favourite regular venues – such as Peckham Palms, SET Social, the Feminist Library, Peckham Pelican, The Ivy House and the Clifton Estate,” Neal tells us, “We’re showing films for the first time at the Aquarius Golf Club, Peckham Arches and the Livesey Exchange, and introducing a new late-night cult movie event at Beer Rebellion.”

Due to the success of the Peckham and Nunhead Festival, the Free Film Festivals network was born. The group helps to organise free film festivals in other areas, sharing tips, projection equipment and ideas.

Alongside the flagship event in Peckham, the festivals are now in Herne Hill, Catford, Camberwell, Streatham, Ealing, West Norwood and even as far away as Glasgow.

HARRIS ACADEMY PECKHAM STUDENT WHO FLED UKRAINE RECEIVES EXCELLENT GCSE RESULTS ©Daria Vlasenko

DARIA VLASENKO, who fled Dnipro in Ukraine with her mum and grandma in 2022, now attends Harris Academy in Peckham, and received excellent GCSE grades this week.

Daria endured a difficult journey as she fled to a refugee camp in Poland at the beginning of the war in Ukraine.

Her family had the opportunity to come to London and alongside her mother and grandma, they came to Camberwell.

Daria had been one of the topperforming students in her school in Ukraine and, whilst she had studied English, it was not strong enough for her to access the English curriculum or interact with her peers.

However, Daria was determined to succeed and worked really hard to improve her English. She read lots of English books and completed all the extra work her teachers set to help her catch up.

At the same time, Daria continued with her Ukrainian education, attending Zoom lessons each evening as well as a weekly Saturday School.

Last year Daria sat exams in her school in Ukraine and achieved the top grades

of all students in her year group.

This week she has passed 7 GCSEs

with a grade 8 in English Language and grade 6s in English Literature and

maths. This is an incredible feat given the challenges she has faced over the last three years.

Daria said: ”Coming to England has been challenging in so many ways.

I found it really hard to get used to a new language, a new culture and a new way of learning – even maths lessons required different methods to the ones I had been taught.

“My teachers at Harris Academy Peckham were super helpful. They would print resources out for me in Ukrainian and would set me extra work to help me catch up. They supported me in whatever way they could and I have really enjoyed my time here.

“I am so proud of myself for achieving my GCSEs. It’s been hard work but it’s been worth it. I’ve made some great friends here and I am looking forward to starting my A Level courses.

“Coming to a new country was very daunting but my mum and grandma have supported me every single day. Without their help and encouragement, I don’t think I would have achieved these results and I am so pleased to have been able to make them proud.”

espite GCSE outcomes falling nationally compared to last summer Pimlico Academy is delighted to announce another year of exceptional GCSE results.

Students have achieved remarkable outcomes, setting the stage for their future academic pursuits.

Results across all measures have improved significantly including 60% achieving grade 9-5 including English and maths (increase of 6%) and 78% of students achieving grade 9-4 including English and Maths (increase of 10%).

Not only are these headline measures by which school performance is judged but more importantly it means a greater number of students are achieving the grades needed to progress onto level 3 qualifications at college or sixth form.

These excellent results follow on from last week’s A Level success, which saw students secure a raft of

top grades, allowing them to take up places at a range of prestigious universities, including the University of Cambridge. With 30% of all entries receiving A*/A, this year’s results were exceptionally strong and meant that students secured places at a number of Russell Group institutions.

A significant number of students surpassed expectations, with 78% attaining all grade 4 or above, 60% attaining grades 5 or above, almost a 30% of all students achieved grade 7-9 in Maths and English.

These strong performances reflect the dedication and hard work of students, staff and families.

WESTMINSTER CITY SCHOOL’S CLASS OF 2025 ARE CELEBRATING IMPROVED GCSES

WESTMINSTER CITY School is pleased to celebrate improved GCSE results this year with some exceptional individual outcomes for students and a significant increase of 8% in the number of outcomes at Grades 9 to 7.

Almost a 1/3 of grades were 7 or higher which is well above the national rate (22%).

The standard pass (grades of 4 or above) rate was 80% across all GCSE grades for Westminster City School students which is well above the national average of 67%.

The school is also above national averages in a key range of attainment outcomes based on figures from last year and we anticipate that, once all the national data is known, results will continue to be well above average for the boys. There is therefore much to be proud of.

Commenting on this year’s GCSE results, Headteacher, Mr Peter Broughton, said: “I am very pleased with this year’s results which are some of the best in recent years and we improved significantly in a number of areas including the performance of our very highest attaining students. This cohort faced a disrupted end to primary school due to the challenges of COVID and in addition faced a far from usual start to their secondary school career. They have shown impressive tenacity to get to this point and we are very confident that they have made exceptional progress despite the lack of national data to confirm this.

Blackheath High School celebrates best-ever GCSE results In English and Humanities, our students were awarded fantastic results with English Literature achieving 84% Grade 9-7. Thursday 21st August, LONDON: Blackheath High School is thrilled to share the superb GCSE results achieved by its students today.

These outstanding results mark a historic milestone as the school’s highestever GCSE grades, with a significant increase in Grade 9s awarded from 2024, demonstrating the continued success of our enhanced academic focus and the positive momentum in student performance year-on-year. Over a third of pupils achieved straight As (Grades 9-7) and 15% of students achieved straight A*s (Grades 9-8), smashing the national average GCSE results.

Sciences delivered remarkable results with Physics leading at 97% Grade 9-7, followed

by Chemistry at 94% and Biology at 90%,

and students taking Further Mathematics also excelled with 95% Grade 9-7.

The Arts demonstrated exceptional breadth of achievement. Music achieved impressive results with 83% Grade 9 and 100% Grade 9-8, Drama secured 89% Grade 9-7 and Art delivered 85% Grade 9-7.

Languages flourished across the curriculum,

bucking the national decline in language learning. Modern Languages students earned themselves 90% Grade 9-7 in French, 83% Grade 9-7 in Mandarin and 72% Grade 9-7 in Spanish. Furthermore, our classical language students achieved 100% Grade 9-7 in Ancient Greek and 89% Grade 9-7 in Latin.

I found my future

Our students’ success across all areas of the curriculum mirrors the upward trajectory of this year’s A-level results, with our highest ever set of A*-B results at A-level since the Covid years.

My Science teachers have given me a solid foundation level to build on, and taking GCSE Further Maths and Statistics has left me feeling prepared and excited to begin my A-levels.

London's infrastructure left to rot

P

lans for new lifts and wider platforms in Peckham Rye station have been suspended indefinitely, after the scheme was snubbed by the government in its June spending review, in yet another blow to south London’s infrastructure.

In a non-committal statement the Department for Transport said the scheme would remain “under review as part of a pipeline of schemes’ for potential” progression when funding becomes available”. Peckham Rye, it explained, had been paused because of the need to “prioritise schemes which will make the greatest difference for passengers”.

It’s an odd line of reasoning, given that Peckham Rye is the busiest station in the country without any stepfree access, according to Network Rail.

This restricts parents with pushchairs, as well as elderly and disabled people from being able to use the station, with some forced into the indignity of sliding down the stairs on their bottom.

Meanwhile, hordes of commuters cram into its narrow passageways and staircases every day, flooding onto a narrow island platform to catch trains into central London. Campaigners fear it could take a tragic accident to show the government just how urgent the case is for the upgrade.

Unfortunately, the abandonment of Peckham Rye's upgrade could have been predicted, as another example of the London-bashing that politicians of all stripes seem all too willing to engage in. In the same round of spending, the Bakerloo Line extension to Lewisham was also shunned, while funding was confirmed for projects outside of the capital such as the TransPennine Route upgrade, new railways for Wales and the Midlands Rail Hub. The focus of recent governments seems to be underpinned by the myth that London’s success comes at the expense of the rest of the UK, rather than serving as its economic engine. But is clipping the capital’s wings the best way of spreading prosperity across Britain?

Another case in point of the readiness of national politicians to embrace solutions to regional inequality at the expense of the financial health of the capital is the new council funding formula. Dubbed the ‘fair funding’ review, the proposals have made headlines for the disproportionately damaging effect on the finances of London councils.

The measures would remove housing costs from the calculation used to allocate cash to local authorities - which in London, accounts for the majority of household spending. Bafflingly, the average distance to the nearest post office would be given as much weight as levels of homelessness in defining an area’s level of deprivation. In Southwark, the changes could leave the council facing a 70 million black hole over three years.

London accounted for 23 per cent of the UK’s GDP in 2023 - bashing its success by withholding muchneeded investment will ultimately make everyone poorer.

Over twenty years ago, this paper campaigned to have a lift installed at Peckham Rye. Still no change. Will it take another twenty years?

And what an opening it was! To embody this year's theme of Above and Beyond, the French parkour artists Lézards Bleu hopped, skipped, jumped and defied death more than once as they did their thing on some of the more iconic buildings in SE18, like the Royal Arsenal Gatehouse, and the former Woolwich Equitable Building Society headquarters, plus other less distinguished structures but no less exciting as they clambered up, inched along, hung from, jumped off and gave us 45 minutes of oohs and aahs and sharp intakes of breath as we followed their journey that culminated in the eight men standing atop a Grade II listed building to declare this festival well and truly open. All this was performed to dramatic new music by Roma Yagnik that enhanced the choreographed acrobatics the crowd looked up to - truly above and beyond.

From there we adjourned to the Tramshed where speeches were made and glasses raised in toast for a magnificent 30 years of arts and culture on our streets - And every single event free.

Thirty companies from around the world will perform new work under the Above and Beyond theme this year: Poetry and movement will celebrate Black masculinity in the world premiere of Fragments of Us in a collaboration between the UK’s leading Black theatre company Talawa and acclaimed Black British dance company Fubunation, directed by award-winning artist Sonia Hughes.

A water-based spectacle The Weight of Water from Dutch company Panama Pictures is a powerful response to the

climate crisis that merges dance, circus and live music on water in Thamesmead.

The much-loved Greenwich Fair returns to its historic nineteenth century home in Greenwich Park.

GDIF’s reinvention of the original fair brings together a packed programme of uplifting, fun and disruptive street theatre, games and family fun to the beautifully relandscaped Wolfe Statue Piazza at the top of Greenwich Park Hill. Framed by London’s best view, this

performance offers new perspectives on our relationship with the natural world and will provide extraordinary images of the festival theme in action.

On the Greenwich Peninsular, engineering and performance collide over the course of a weekend in Turning Worlds as four spectacular shows fuse the worlds of circus, physics and robotics.

Bradley Hemmings MBE, GDIF’s Artistic Director, says: ‘We’ve learned that there

are no edges or boundaries in outdoor theatre and the usual distinctions between art and the everyday are often miraculously blurred. This year our “stage” stretches out in all directions across parks, town centres, basketball courts, roofs and a water space, whilst we also invite audiences to look up, both physically and imaginatively.'

There will be artists from Syria, Sweden, New York, Belgium and London, of course; there will be dance, high-

wire walking, performance art, comedy, circus, storytelling, puppetry, the list goes on. There will be daily happenings in sites spread over the two boroughs far too many to mention.

(Kwame Odoom) in a shipwreck, arrives in Illyria where she disguises herself as a boy named Cesario and becomes a servant to the Duke Orsino (Solomon Israel). He sends her to woo Olivia on his behalf. Olivia falls in love with disguised Viola.

Meanwhile, in this interpretation, we find that Antonio (Max Keeble) has deep affections for Sebastian, who eventually falls in love with Olivia.

Confused? You will be.

The whole cast are superb in their roles, with Feste (Jos Vantyler) adding to the feeling of being at a bacchanalian festival. The set, a gold-coloured sunburst designed by Jean Chan, is used with great efficiency for their entrances and exits. Lydia Hardiman,

costume supervisor, is responsible for the wonderfully colourful and extravagant costumes, which gave a nod to the different cultures and social standing of the characters.

The five musicians, Louise Duggan on percussion, Melanie Henry playing woodwind, Richard Henry playing bass trombone/tuba, Rob Updegraff on guitar/banjo and Adrian Woodward on trumpet are set on a level above the main stage, from where they perform music composed by Simon Slater and definitely deserve a mention.

The groundlings certainly add to the atmosphere of a Globe production: ready for the fourth wall breaking and handling props thrown at them, to being brought up onto the stage to get their cameo moments with the cast, a kind of Shakespearean lotto where the prize may be getting the chance to be playfully insulted by Malvolio.

I highly recommend this show as an excellent opportunity to forget our troubles and to laugh at ourselves in

By Debra Gosling IN THE nineteenth century Bermondsey hosted the largest jam producer in the world. No, it wasn't Hartley's, nor Southwells.

Liptons? Nope. It was Pink's. I'd never heard of them until I bought a rather lovely old twisty bottle, which I think was used for fruit syrups.

Staple Street contained a big engineering works that closed in 1870 and made room for Edward Pink's jam.

Born in 1827 in Hampshire, Edward had been an apprentice grocer in Holborn, but he had bigger things in mind when he established his jam factory. The place was huge, overlooking all the little residential streets and houses. It gave work to those living thereabouts and, most of the time, it spewed out lovely fruity aromas. During the fruit season Pink employed an additional 600 employees, with the majority women workers.

Besides the warm smell of jam, there was the noise of a huge and modern steam pump. Yet, in 1877 the medical officer for health in St George's parish had complaints from residents regarding Pink's yard, which had a pit filled with horse dung and rotting fruit. The firm boasted it was the largest maker of marmalade, so you can imagine the stench of rotten oranges. They were told to take away the horse poo more frequently and have a separate pit for the rotten fruit.

Pink's agreed, but it was just the start of much discord in its history.

In 1890 Pink's son Thomas took over the running of the things - and that's when the jam really hit the fan. He was headstrong and wanted to make his mark. Thomas went onto the factory floor and completely reorganised it. He liked new technology and had a telephone.

Instead of a secretary, he dictated onto a phonograph machine and had it typed up.

Two years later the company made the headlines when Frederick Weeks,

a carman, was charged with animal cruelty by working a horse in an unfit state. Pinks' horse keeper was also summoned for allowing this to happen.

The horse was lame and in great pain.

But all the horse keeper got was a fine and Weeks was discharged. It was the cruelty meted out on horses

by Victorian carmen that caused the RSPCA to come about.

The company was back in the news in 1895 when Eliza Wright, aged 52, died after falling backwards into a vat of boiling apples. Her workmate, Emily Godfrey, was wheeling a pan of the apples across the factory floor and shouted for Eliza to get out of the way. Eliza moved her own trolley away but caught her leg on yet another trolley and fell backwards into the boiling fruit. Godfrey was too shocked to do anything but other workers pulled Eliza out and called for the factory nurse. Eliza, scalded all over her body, was transported to Guy's but died of her injuries. At the inquest the jury recommended that Pink's tighten

their health and safety rules and use covered pans.

Thomas Pink was getting a name for himself but for all the wrong reasons.

He was very strict and had a poor reputation as a boss, but it was when he reduced the women's wages that things got ugly. The women had a union and went on strike, so he sacked them and brought in new people.

Working conditions were also bad.

Workers were not allowed to leave the building during their lunch break but there was nowhere for them to eat, other than the factory floor. In 1894 MP John Burns got to hear about it and spoke directly to Pink, who built a four storey canteen of sorts.

Pink stated he wanted his staff to be happy, but only to increase productivity.

In 1911 more trouble brewed when the women striked again for more pay and were given an extra two shillings a week. It started a domino effect and factories across Bermondsey workers downed tools and walked out for more money. A lot of women were the bread

(or bread and jam) winners of the family, at a time when their husbands had to queue for a day's work.

Three years later the staff walked out again. The whole workforce wanted the minimum wage as recommended by the trade board. Pinks had no choice but to agree.

In 1919 the company's glory days were over after a huge fire affected production. Add to this the constant pilfering of the goods by the workforce and it was curtains for Thomas. The business was sold and merged with East End jam producers Plaistowe.

Thomas Snr died in 1926 of heart failure, purportedly due to his indulgence of smoking, drinking and overconsumption of meat. Hardly the lifestyle of his two shillings a week workforce. Thomas Jnr emigrated to Canada and was never heard from again! Plaistowe was bought out by Crosse & Blackwell. The Staple street factory was demolished in 1930 and replaced by the Tabard Gardens Estate.

Transport for London in consultation with the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Trafc Order under section 14(1) of the Road Trafc Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specied in paragraph 2. 2. The purpose of the Order is to enable crane operational works to take place at A201 Blackfriars Road in the London Borough of Southwark.

The Hamlet had won boss Mark Dacey’s first four matches in charge, but they were beaten

by Charlie Lambert’s only goal of the game in the 45th minute.

Dulwich were knocked into second place in the table by Brentwood Town, who have won four and drawn one of their first five games.

The Hamlet are in FA Cup action this weekend as they take on Southern Counties East League Premier Division Whitstable Town. Kick-off at Champion Hill is 3pm on Saturday.

Tributes pour in for Surrey’s Dunn after retirement

By Sports Reporter SURREY FAST-BOWLER Matthew Dunn has been forced to retire from professional cricket with immediate effect due to a shoulder injury.

The 33-year-old suffered a labral tear of the shoulder whilst playing for Surrey’s Second XI against Middlesex in May 2024. Due to ongoing pain in January 2025, Dunn underwent surgery to repair the injury and continued his rehabilitation with the hope of returning to the playing field as soon as possible. He was back on the pitch in June for the Surrey Second XI, but has suffered ongoing pain despite injections.

“Unfortunately, I've been struggling with a shoulder injury for the last fourteen months now,” Dunn said. “I had a surgery in January,

tried my best this year to come back, took multiple injections, but unfortunately, we've reached a point where we're kind of out of options medically.

“For me, the club is and has been an absolutely massive part of my life for a long time and it will be for a long time. I don't think you ever really do properly leave this place.

“To my parents, my wife, my brother every team-mate I’ve had, the coaching staff here, everyone who's just bought into me, just a massive thank you. At the end of the day, sport takes a lot of sacrifice, and I look back on my personal life, I've missed a lot of it here. I've missed weddings, I've missed personal events. I've missed so much for my career, and a lot of people have stayed by my side throughout that. And I thank them for that, because at times

you do have to be selfish, you do have to put everything into the career.

“Everyone who's been there and facilitated that, just a massive thanks and on to the next chapter.”

The fast-bowler has been a member of the Surrey squad that has won the County Championship four times since 2018 and played an important role in getting the Three Feathers promoted to Division One in 2015, taking 28 wickets with his searing pace in that campaign. In a career hampered by a number of injuries, he claimed 115 wickets for Surrey, including four five-wicket hauls, to go with 52 scalps in white-ball cricket.

“It is always sad to see people leave, especially someone who has been at Surrey ever since he was a young lad and you know how much the club means to him,” Alec Stewart, high-performance cricket advisor

at Surrey, said. “What is even more gutting and heartbreaking is that an injury has compelled him to call it a day.

“Matthew is a true one-club man and has been a wonderful servant to Surrey for over fourteen years. He is highly respected and appreciated by his teammates and in the wider game as well. He is one of life’s great people.

“Dunny has had a lot of challenges in life, and he has faced them with bravery and dignity. Unfortunately, he has come across another difficult period of time, but I have no doubts he will see it through with courage and strength. He will always have the support of his team-mates, the dressing room and the club to lean on.

By John Kelly DILLIAN WHYTE has insisted he won’t retire despite his first-round stoppage by Moses Itauma this month.

Brixton’s Whyte, 37, had no answer to his 20-year-old opponent’s speed and brutal onslaught in Saudi Arabia.

It was only the fourth defeat of Whyte’s 35-fight career, but there has been speculation it could be his last in the ring.

But Whyte said this week he wants to carry on.

"This is not where my story ends," Whyte said. "I may have lost this fight, but not the fire that built me.

"Thank you to everyone who's been standing by me through the highs and the lows.

By Will Scott at Bramall Lane LUKE CUNDLE scored a first-half goal as Millwall got back to winning ways by beating a beleaguered Sheffield United 1-0 at Bramall Lane.

The Lions were without several firstteam players, but stamped their authority in South Yorkshire, dominating the first half and emerging with a deserved goal after Cundle reacted first to Mihailo Ivanovic's knock down, before holding on despite being subject to serious pressure in the second half to emerge with the three points.

Steven Benda made a number of important saves to keep the Lions in the game, while Massimo Luongo impressed in his first league start for Millwall since joining in the midfield.

Cundle, however, was the pick of the Lions' players in his first league start of the season, finishing his chance well and providing constant energy and duelwinning on both flanks - his performance was typified by a gut-busting run to get back in transition in the 66th minute.

It was a performance that Millwall needed after a disappointing 3-0 loss at The Den to Middlesbrough the weekend before, and despite being handicapped by injuries and impending transfers, the Lions started well away at Bramall Lane, winning duels and picking up second balls with far more frequency than they did in the second half against Boro.

They had the first shot of the game when Mihailo Ivanovic had a shot blocked in the box in the fifth minute, and the first clear sight of goal in the fifteenth minute when Camiel Neghli whipped the ball into the box which Josh Coburn managed to get on the end of it, although the ball bounced off his shoulder and sailed harmlessly into goalkeeper Michael Cooper's hands.

The noise around Bramall Lane was concentrated solely around the jubilant away end, and the noise only grew as the Lions turned the ball over high up the pitch again and again, with the Blades finding Millwall's organised and relentless press difficult to navigate.

Coburn had the final chance of the half, picking the ball up near the halfway line before driving forward and taking a shot that was just about deflected around the post.

The Lions had recovered well from a disappointing second half at home against Middlesbrough last week to really stamp their authority on a Sheffield United side that seemed to be in all sorts of trouble, and were well deserving of their one goal lead at half-time.

half. Leonard took it long, and Cooper flicked it onto the box. Ivanovic got on the end of it, but his header was blocked, and he sustained a whack in the process.

Cundle had the opportunity to double his goal tally, and the Lions’ lead a minute later. Leonard intercepted a long goal kick, and somehow his header bounced all the way to Ivanovic. The striker laid it off to Cundle, but his pass was slightly behind the midfielder, and his effort went well over the bar.

The Blades came up the other end and forced Benda to make his first save of the game in the 50th minute. Louie Barry drove at Ryan Leonard before cutting back onto his right foot and uncorking a fierce drive that the German goalkeeper did well to get down low to and turn around the post.

From the resulting corner, Sydie Peck's header was cleared off the line.

The pace of the game slowed down

as Sheffield United started to gain more control in the match, although Millwall still looked threatening at times.

In the 58th minute, Massimo Luongo played the ball over the top of the Blades' defence that Josh Coburn managed to take down and hold up, before passing it back to the onrushing Ivanovic. The striker miscued his effort, and it was easily collected by Cooper in goal.

Chances were few and far between for either side aside from that, with Callum O'Hare curling one past the post after a quick counter-attack in the 66th minute.

Two minutes later, Benda was forced into his second save of the match when he just about pushed away Hamer's effort, which was hurtling towards the far corner.

Ivanovic had another chance in the 72nd minute, this time getting in behind before forcing out a low save from Cooper after thumping in a low effort towards the near post.

With ten minutes to go, Neil opted to bring off Ivanovic for nineteen-year-old midfielder Daniel Kelly as the Lions looked to see out the match.

Sheffield United were now exerting extreme pressure on Millwall, and Crama had to clear Tyrese Campbell's header off the line in the 83rd minute.

Neil continued to try to solidify, this time bringing on right-back Wes Harding on for Cundle and striker Kevin Nisbet on for Coburn, with Leonard moving to right midfield.

Benda made another stretching save in the 87th minute after the ball bounced around the box following a corner, but referee John Busby whistled for a foul against the Blades.

Millwall saw the remainder of the game out to grab a well-deserved three points.

Alex Neil praises his side’s grit at Bramall Lane

By Will Scott ALEX NEIL praised his side's mentality during their 1-0 win at Bramall Lane.

The Lions travelled to South Yorkshire without several key first-team players, but imposed their will on a flailing Blades side, taking eleven shots to their opponents’ four in the first half, before Luke Cundle struck seven minutes before the interval.

The Blades were improved in the second half, subjecting Millwall to a barrage of shots in the final stages of the match, with goalkeeper Steven Benda making two vital saves to keep his side in it.

Neil was pleased with how his side held on to secure the win.

"First things first, Sheffield United are a good side, aren't they," Neil said. "I know it's been a difficult start for them.

But they're a good team. Most of these players last year finished the season really strongly, finished with 92 points, something ridiculous like that.

"I think for us, obviously, we had the disappointment last week losing the game. To be fair, it was not too dissimilar today, in the fact that we got the first goal, we then sat back, made it difficult, and then we tried to hit them on the counter.

"We needed our goalkeeper to make two great saves. One from Hamer, one from Louie Barry down to his corner.

"But certainly for us, you could see how light we are today, in terms of personnel.

We've got Femi [Azeez] missing. We've got Billy [Mitchell] missing. We've got

Alfie [Doughty] missing. We've got Japhet [Tanganga] missing. We had so many players missing today.

"We've got young kids on the bench.

Dan Kelly's only done sixty minutes maximum across pre-season. [Kevin] Nisbet has only done sixty minutes maximum across pre-season. We were stretched to the max.

"Coming here, if we were going to win the game, there was going to be a spell where it was going to be backs against the wall, defend your box, do the basics, and rely on your goalkeeper at times.

That's how it panned out.

"So we're just delighted we got the win.

I think when this team, when this club's got adversity against us, it's probably when we're at our best. I thought today was a typical Millwall performance

where everything's against us, and we managed to dig one out.

"I thought all the lads tried and gave everything. They emptied their tanks on the pitch. I think we spoke about the last game against Middlesbrough. Towards the end, we stopped running as hard as we normally do, which really frustrated me. So we wanted to get back to making sure we do what we do best, which is graft, run, fight for every ball, and never give up.

"What we have got, we've got little pockets of quality, and I thought at times, certainly first half, we created better opportunities than probably Sheffield United did.

"Obviously, that changed in the second half once we got the first goal. But I was pleased that we did carry a threat at

times in the first half. I thought as the game wore on, we knew naturally we're going to sit deeper and deeper, and it'll probably be harder and harder, but we did well."

Neil opened up on the tactical switch that helped them beat the Blades.

"If we're going to look off the front more rather than risk the ball through the central areas, then second balls are important, so we flooded it by bringing our two wide players in and making sure that we condensed the space in the central area of the pitch," Neil said.

"I thought certainly first half it worked.

We started a bit tentatively in the second half, there was about a five-minute spell where we did alright. Then, to be fair, Sheffield United, at that point, were more on top. We just had to cling on."

By Will Scott at The Den MILLWALL BEAT Coventry City 2-1 in the Carabao Cup Second Round.

Massimo Luongo and Kamarl Grant scored their first goals for the club, both from corners, as a youthful Lions side overcame a late Sky Blues onslaught to book their passage to the Third Round.

While Millwall were without many key first-team players, who were rested in the mid-week game, they started well and had something to show for it when Luongo wrapped his foot around the ball at the near post.

Grant, making his Den debut, doubled his side's lead in the second half when he headed home Aidomo Emakhu's corner, and the Lions were able to see out the game, despite Haji Wright converting a penalty he won, to leave The Den with their fourth win in five.

As maybe to be expected for a mid-week fixture with heavy rotation, neither side got out of the blocks quickly in the opening ten minutes, with the pace of the game perhaps hindered by the fifteen-minute delay to kick off caused by Coventry's team bus getting stuck in traffic.

The match started to pick up around the eleventh-minute mark, with Kevin Nisbet having a shot blocked after Luke Cundle picked up a second ball and surged through

Two minutes later, the Scottish striker had the ball in the back of the net after he met Wes Harding's cross, but he was immediately flagged for offside.

The game became quite a transitional affair as both sides started to get into the game, but few clear-cut chances were created by either side - with the Sky Blues having an Ellis Simms shot blocked by Joe Bryan in the eighteenth minute.

The Lions generated the first good opportunity of the match in the 23rd minute, when Bryan's low cross bounced to Wes Harding at the back post, but the rightback's effort was deflected over the bar.

Millwall continued to look the more dangerous of the two sides and had a reward for it in the 33rd minute. Aidomo Emakhu put a corner in, Kelly managed to flick the ball onwards with his chest, and Luongo wrapped his foot around it to guide it into the bottom corner for his first goal in a Lions shirt.

Coventry looked to respond immediately, with Crama dragging down Ellis Simms on the edge of the box in the 36th minute and Matt Grimes striking the post from the resulting free kick.

Both teams continued to maintain the intensity of the match without much to show for it - Emakhu, who was, as usual, a livewire, had a shot blocked, while Crama

made an important intervention to deny Ellis Simms a goalscoring opportunity.

The half drew to a close with the Lions well worth their lead - while neither side had dominated the half, Millwall created several chances while the Sky Blues rarely looked like scoring.

Casper De Norre and Adam Mayor were introduced during the interval for Bryan and Luongo in a pre-planned substitution, with Mayor continuing to play at left-back.

Coventry had the first chance of the half in the 54th minute when Kaine Kesler-Hayden met Miguel Angel Brau's cross at the back post, but Crocombe made a good save low to his left.

Neil handed another youngster their Den debut when he brought on Ajay Matthews in the 62nd minute.

Coventry started to pile on the pressure after making a wave of substitutions around the hour mark, with Grant making a brave header to clear a cross at the near post and deny Brau a goalscoring opportunity.

Matthews was proving to be a useful outlet up front, winning fouls and breaking up the Sky Blues' momentum, and it was one of those free kicks in the 74th minute that allowed Millwall to regain a measure of control.

The Sky Blues pushed for an answer, and Jack Rudoni forced out a sprawling save from Crocombe after he thumped in a longrange effort in the 82nd minute.

The New Zealand international was called into action from the resulting corner, saving Jay Dasilva's low effort with his legs.

Coventry continued to pile on the pressure - in the 85th minute Grant blocked Haji Wright's twisting effort with his legs.

Wright won a penalty in the 87th minute after a late challenge from Harding, and the American converted the spot-kick with a fierce strike that Crocombe managed to get a hand to.

Jack Rudoni, Jay Dasilva and Haji Wright, who pulled one back for the Sky Blues late on.

Despite the disparity in the experience of the two teams on the pitch in the final fifteen minutes, Millwall held on to secure passage to the next round.

"We're delighted with the game because we made eight changes," Neil said.

"Some of our younger players, who in pre-season were terrific, and they were a bit unfortunate that their chances from that point onwards have been limited.

So I felt this was a great opportunity

to test them at the Championship level against Championship opponents.

"The most pleasing thing is when you get your chance as a young player, it's important that you win. It's important that you sample what it feels like to play a first-team game and get a victory at the end of it, and you've basically run yourself into the ground, and that nice feeling as a player when you walk off and you're knackered and you've got your just reward.

"So from our perspective, we are delighted. I felt the senior lads that did play led them really well. I thought they

did exactly what I expected of them. We got younger as the game wore on, and we put on younger kids. They are putting more and more of their big hitters on.

"So for us to come out the other end of that and win the game is a terrific achievement for the kids. I think they deserve huge amounts of credit for tonight.

"When you're giving those lads an opportunity, the lads on Saturday are absolutely buzzing because we beat Sheffield United. What I wanted for these lads was to sample that feeling.

Millwall set to sign goalkeeper

The 29-year-old shotstopper will join as cover in the goalkeeping department, allowing George Evans to head out on loan.

Coleman has spent the last two seasons at League One side Bolton Wanderers, making fifteen appearances in all competitions.

Born in Bolton, he came through Oldham Athletic's academy, signing his first professional deal in 2014 and making his first-team debut in 2015.

Coleman signed for Huddersfield Town in 2016, spending the next four seasons on the Terriers' books while spending the 2018-19 season on loan at Shrewsbury Town in League One. Stints at Fleetwood Town, Rochdale, and Ipswich Town followed, before he signed for the Trotters in 2023.

Millwall boss pleased to give youngsters a taste of winning

By Will Scott ALEX NEIL said the chance to give youngsters minutes against Championship opposition was the most 'pleasing' aspect of Millwall's 2-1 win over Coventry City in the Carabao Cup Second Round.

Neil named four players aged 23 or younger to the starting eleven, and introduced four substitutes aged 21 or younger throughout the game.

Coventry boss Frank Lampard, meanwhile, substituted on several of his key first-team players, including

first time at the first team level.

"So that's the most pleasing thing that I take away from the game.

"They should be delighted, which means we've got a really good, confident, healthy squad going into the weekend, where we can go and try and get after this game. When I mean healthy, I mean in good spirits. Obviously, we've got a couple of injuries as we know, but, yeah, we're looking forward to the game at the weekend.

"It's going to be a good game for us, and we've got a lot of guys who look ready to contribute."

Star centre-back set for switch to Championship rivals Sheffield United as Neil confirms plans to replace him

By Will Scott JAPHET TANGANGA is closing in on a move to Sheffield United, this paper understands.

The 26-year-old defender is set to complete a medical with the Blades in the days following Tuesday, August 26.

Tanganga was left out of Millwall’s past two match-day squads as his move picked up pace in the days leading up to the Lions’ trip to Sheffield United on August 23, and this paper understands the Blades were pushing hard to sign him.

Asked by this paper about why Tanganga was left out of the side that beat the Blades 1-0, Neil said: “What I can tell you about Japhet is, Japhet, since I've been here, has

been nothing but a consummate professional,” Neil said.

“At no point did Japhet tell me or anybody else that he didn't want play today. So Japhet wanted to play the game. He was available to play the game.

“The decision was made by me, after I spoke to Jimmy, the owner, and Steve Gallen, the director of football, about what we wanted to do with this.

“What I felt today was, it was better to take him out of the firing line and go with the guys who are obviously in a good mental space and ready to play.

“But I want to make it clear again, Japhet at no stage refused to play today, at any point. In fact, if anything, it was the opposite, and I made a decision for

him.”

“The fact that I took him out of the game, obviously, things have moved on.

“As far as I know, things are not at a conclusion stage just now. I had a good chat with Japhet earlier today.

So we'll see what transpires over the next couple of days.”

Tanganga initially joined the Lions on loan from Tottenham in January 2024, before making the move permanent that summer following his release by Spurs.

He was voted Millwall’s 202425 player of the season following a campaign where he made 43 appearances in all competitions, and was one of the nominees for the Championship Player of the Month award for November.

contract this summer amid interest from Premier League clubs, with the defender having a £1.2 million release clause only available to topflight sides.

Millwall looked to have fended off bids for their centre-back from Serie A clubs until Sheffield United made their move.

Neil confirmed after the Blades win that Millwall plan to sign a replacement if Tanganga completes his move to South Yorkshire.

“Absolutely," Neil said. "If players leave, then naturally we need to replace them.

"I think what's obviously going to speed that up a little bit as well for other positions is the fact we've got so many injuries just now. That's unfortunate.”

Alfie Doughty was withdrawn with an injured hamstring in the Lions’ 3-0 loss to Middlesbrough on August 16, while Billy Mitchell, Macaulay Langstaff, Ra’ees Bangura-Williams, and Femi Azeez were all absent from the match-day squad after being included against Boro.

Bangura-Williams returned to action in the Lions’ 2-1 win against Coventry City on August 26, coming on in the 62nd minute.

Neil did not have a concrete timeline for the other four.

“Femi, we're not sure,” Neil said.

“He's going to see a specialist. His was a contact injury. So he planted his foot, someone caught him, and he rolled his ankle, unfortunately.

“Billy made him make a pass, felt his quad, Macca stretched for the ball, felt his hip flexor, and Ra'ees was unavailable today. And, obviously, Alfie [Doughty] hurt his hamstring at Norwich.

“But the difficulty we've got is, if you look at all those players, they're arguably all starters. So when you take five of your starting eleven out, it naturally impacts your team and makes it difficult to win games.

“That's why I think today, the lads deserve so much credit for what they managed to do.”

Asked if any were long-term injuries, Neil said: “It's probably unclear, but they're not going to be back next week. Let's put it that way.”

Camiel Neghli limped off the pitch against the Blades, but Neil confirmed the forward was fine.
