Hammersmith and Fulham Council leader Stephen Cowan said the bridge, which has been shut since 2020, won’t be opened to cars unless £230m is raised to carry out essential repairs.

Councillor Cowan suggested one of the ways to do this was to charge vehicles crossing the bridge and claimed the fate of the Victorian-era bridge laid in the hands of London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

During a council meeting on Monday, June 5, the Labour councillor said: “We are of the view that if you’re going to force us to open up the bridge then it’s going to have to be through a toll and the argument for a toll would be that, if the bridge is going to have a proper maintenance fund for the next 100 years, it needs to probably have it’s own income line.

“The Mayor of London told us two weeks ago that he’s not supporting a toll.

"Indeed, I believe there has been some discrepancies in the Mayor’s team, with some believing that the bridge would remain closed

and opened for cyclists – some people believe it should be open to cars.”

Cllr Cowan said the broken bridge was a “wider London issue” because many of the traffic problems were impacting residents outside the borough.

He said: “I think it will be up to the Mayor of London to decide what will happen to the bridge, ultimately, because it is a London issue rather than a Hammersmith and Fulham issue.

“I can tell you no council under any administration has £230m to spend on a bridge or to borrow the money to do it.”

He claimed the council was being asked to cover an ‘unprecedented’ one-third of the repair costs and had already forked out £20m to stabilise the bridge.

He said a decision on how the bridge will be used while it is out of action for cars won’t be made until stabilisation works finish at the end of summer and comes as plans were submitted for lightweight, electric autonomous shuttles to help people cross the river.

Cllr Cowan said: “This problem is going to remain a problem and I think it’s going to be on others to decide and insist that we spend £230m fixing this bridge or are they going to say that it has another scope for direction – and that’s what’s currently being scoped out.

“The priority at the moment is for us to get the bridge fixed and what happens to it then is going to be a matter for the national government and the Mayor.”

Councillor Cowan described fixing the bridge as “one of the most stressful things” the council has ever dealt with and accused the Tories of turning the issue into a “political football”.

Addressing a Hammersmith and Fulham Tory councillor at Monday’s meeting, he said: “This is a national embarrassment. It is ridiculous that we have had the bridge closed and that we’ve not had any proper support because it’s being used as a political football.

“If we could have taken that out – and it was you people who put that in – we’d have, I think, got a lot further, a lot quicker.”

He added: “I have wasted years of my life sitting in ridiculous task force meetings where it ended up with the minister involved ultimately saying this is a problem for Hamemrsmith and Fulham to fix and quite honestly, I didn’t need to sit in so many meetings to get that from a minister in the first place.”

Engineers have been working on the project since 2020 after cracks were discovered in the bridge along with other major defects in April 2019. The repairs set to take 10 years to complete, according to one report.

Hammersmith Bridge is one of the world’s oldest suspension bridges, according to Hammersmith and Fulham council.

It is a Grade II* listed structure made out of wood and wrought iron with the suspension held in place by cast iron pedestals and is part of Britain’s engineering heritage and a national landmark.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council claim they’re being told by the government to pay an “unprecedented” 33pc of the original estimated repair bill which could have normally been paid in large part by Transport for London and the Department for Transport.

A DfT spokesperson said: “LBHF is responsible for decisions regarding repairing and reopening Hammersmith Bridge, but we continue to engage with all relevant parties to find a cost effective solution, and are committed to providing up to one third of repair costs.”

They said decisions around what engineering options are taken and approaches to reopening are made by the council.

They said reopening the bridge to all users, including motor vehicles, remains a Ministerial priority and the department was committed to funding up to one third of the total cost of repairs.

Deputy leader of Hammersmith and Fulham Conservatives said: “It is shocking that Cllr Cowan alleged that the Conservative Party is politicising Hammersmith Bridge when it is the Labour Party that have been pursuing an anti-car agenda through (i) the closure of Hammersmith Bridge to cars, (ii) the closure of Wandsworth Bridge, (iii) the ULEZ scheme which punishes the most venerable in London, (iv) traffic schemes without proper consultation, and (v) extortionate parking charges.”

A spokesperson for the Mayor said: “Hammersmith & Fulham Council have been clear that the purpose of a potential charge on the bridge would be to raise revenue to repay the costs of repair works on the bridge, and not to deliver wider transport policy objectives.

“As such, the appropriate approach to introduce the toll is through a tolling order, which would be managed by the Department for Transport.

"The Mayor and TfL (Transport for London) are committed to supporting the reopening of Hammersmith Bridge and will continue to work closely with the local council and the Government.”

New ferrets incoming at Surrey Docks thanks to young farmers' fundraiser

New ferrets will soon be scurrying around Surrey Docks Farm after kids raised a whopping £1,775.

The farm’s youth committee launched the campaign after the old ferrets, Buddy and Booboo, sadly died in 2020.

In their absence, the enclosure became dilapidated and the money will buy a new ferret house and two to three new furry friends.

A spokesperson for Surrey Docks Farm said: “Their ferret house fundraiser has been a huge success, with the young people organising four separate events at the farm this spring.”

Among those who helped raise money was ten-year-old Adam Imam, from Rotherhithe, who gathered funds by walking into local pubs with a charity bucket and pitching the ferrets’ case to punters.

The Surrey Docks Farm spokesperson added: “The ferrets will be cared for by the young people in our core youth programme on the weekends as well as our volunteers, work experience students and adults with learning disabilities.”

Children in the farm’s programmes will enjoy learning about ferrets, taking them for walks around the farm, feeding and mucking them out.

This will also take them to animal competitions and learn about their behaviour.

The ferrets, whose arrival is hotly anticipated, should come to the farm later this year.

Surrey Docks Farm, established at the site in 1986, is also home to pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys and poultry.

Homeowners at 47 Pomeroy Street bought their properties believing Hatcham Gardens - a green space outside the property - would be re-landscaped for community use.

The park was supposed to be opened up in May 2020 and then was delayed until December 2022.

But six months later, residents are still waking up to an inaccessible, arid space.

Pomeroy resident Andre Silva, 37, said: “I think the main message is to realise that Peabody took the park away from the community to build a massive building, make loads of profit and doesn’t really bother about giving it back. That’s how it feels to us - that they don’t really care.”

Peabody got permission to build 65 homes on the site just off the Old Kent Road in 2018.

To facilitate construction, a large green space outside the development was blocked off and used by contractors.

In exchange, Peabody promised to contribute £64,000 towards the upgrade of the local play area - something it has done.

Although it wasn’t part of the planning permission, Peabody accepts that it also agreed “to carry out additional improvements to the rest of the park”.

Swanky marketing materials dangled the possibility of tree planting, a lawn and play features for kids - of stark contrast to the “eyesore” now facing residents.

Pomeroy resident June Mong said: “When we came to the sales office to look at the property, Peabody salespeople sold the whole property to us by promoting the redevelopment of Hatcham Gardens.

“If anyone wanted to revalue their property this would be a real dampener.”

She also said kids at the local Kender Primary School were missing out on an important green space.

Pomeroy resident and mum-of-two Kelly Childs, 46, said: “Well it’s a real inconvenience because obviously I’ve got two children…they like exercising, they like running and there’s just no outdoor space for them to go.”

Peabody said it was “disappointed” by the situation but that residents would not receive compensation and that it could not say when works would be completed.

We then faced various procurement problems that were out of our control, including an unexpected lack of suitable contractors responding to our tender.

“We have since been unable to find a landscaping company that is willing to quote for the work. However, we’re seeking quotes from alternative contractors and expect this to take another three months.

By Isabel Ramirez a free public cinema has been put up in a disused space in Brixton for a month, as part of a london-wide festival.

The London Festival of Architecture (LFA) has launched a cinema in a disused space in Brixton, with a range of free shows that celebrate the area's rich heritage.

'Views on the Atlantic', from Brixton Community Cinema with Bamidele Awoyemi, Farouk Agoro and Livia Wang, forms a series of cinema installations which will be shown under a flight of stairs on Atlantic Road and also on Windrush Square.

It is part of the London Festival of Architecture (LFA), set in disused space to

offer residents the chance to 'reimagine' how space is used. The sites will be used for evening cinema screenings, exhibitions, and other programme activities.

This will include displays of archival photography and film gathered from local organisations and archives such as Lambeth Archives, Ritzy Cinema and Black Cultural Archives.

During the day, they will be used for ‘gathering, education and artistic expression’, along with a series of learning workshops.

£20,000 needed to open paddling pool

a commuNiTy paddling pool in Streatham might not open this summer, which would make it the second south london pool to announce it will be closed for the holidays.

The paddling pool on Streatham Common was first created in 1938, and since then has been a 'well-used' communal spot.

In 2016, after it had been out of use for a few years, it was saved from closure

by Streatham Common Cooperative (SCCOOP), who say they've done their best to keep it in use.

Vicky Peet, Operations Manager for SCCOOP, explained that due to a lack of funding and resources over the years, it has become progressively harder to open.

"We're not in a position to open it without support," she said.

In previous years, they managed to raise enough funding to keep it open.

But this year, Vicky said they will need a lot more to keep it open long-term.

"If we don't raise at least £20,000, we won't be able to open it this year."

She said this figure is due to extra charges, including water charges.

"We were never charged before," Vicky continued, "but to be honest I

understand that [Lambeth Council] is strapped for cash like all councils are. So I get it, but it is an extra cost we will have to cover."

This comes as news that Tooting Lido will also be closed this summer for repairs.

Doreen Barton, part of the Streatham Mums Network, said it would be a real shame. "I was a childminder for ten years and used to use the pool regularly," she explained.

"This is for children whose parents can't afford to pay to go on holiday. It was free to use. I would take the under fives during the week in the lovely hot weather. We'd have a great time.

Doreen added that since it brought such joy to so many people, it is up to the community to come together to save it.

"What we need is the momentum for people to get behind SCCOOP and their campaign to bring the pool back," she said.

"News has started to spread and people are so disappointed. Yet another facility for people to be outdoors inexpensively on their doorsteps has been taken away - and we can't let that happen."

Members of SCCOOP and local parents' associations are working on a crowdfunding page, which they hope will be up by next week.

Appeal after pedestrian is seriously injured Officers are appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage after a pedestrian was seriously injured in Plumstead.

Police said were called shortly before 6pm on Sunday, 11 June "to reports of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian in Plumstead Common Road."

A man, in his 50s, was found with a head injury. He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

His family have been informed and the driver of the car, a 27-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drugs.

Police said he remained in custody at south London police station.

Detectives from the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now appealing for any witnesses, or drivers with dash cam footage, to come forward.

Man charged with attempted murder of woman in Croydon A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a woman in Croydon.

Hussain Haron, 22 of London Road, Mitcham, was charged in connection with an incident at a residential address in Grenaby Avenue, Croydon last Friday, 9 June.

A 29-year-old woman found with stab wounds was taken to hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

Haron has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

He was due to appear at Croydon Magistrates' Court last Monday, 12 June.

Alexander was sadly pronounced dead at the scene just 45 minutes after police, ambulance and Air Ambulance crews raced to Askew Road.

On the night of Alexander’s murder, it is believed the assailants drove past him in a white Range Rover at around 12.40am and shot him in a case of mistaken identity. The Range Rover was found burnt out just 25 minutes later three miles away on Ascott Avenue.

An investigation by the Met’s Specialist Crime Command has seen more than 20 officers involved and hours of CCTV poured over.

They are still keen to hear from anyone with information or who may have been in the area at the time.

Detective Inspector Rebecca Woodsford, Specialist Crime, said: "Three years have now passed but our determination to achieve justice for Alexander and his family is undiminished.

"This £20,000 reward from the independent charity Crimestoppers could go some way to help us achieve that.

The family of an aspiring computer scientist fatally shot in a suspected case of mistaken identity in Shepherds Bush made an emotional plea for information on the third anniversary of his murder.

A £20,000 Crimestoppers reward is available for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of Alexander Kareem’s killers.

He was only 20-years-old when he was gunned down on Askew Road in Shepherds Bush, in the early hours of Monday, 8 June 2020.

He’d popped into an off-licence and was on his way to a friend’s house on his e-scooter when he was shot and left for dead, in what police believe is likely to be a case of mistaken identity.

Alexander’s sister, Khafi, and brother, Kabir, spoke at New Scotland Yard ahead of the anniversary: “People say ‘this was three years ago’ but for us this is every day; we are living with this every day," his sister Khafi said.

“I had three brothers, now I only have two. Sometimes I will see something in a shop and think ‘that would look nice on Alexander’, and then it hits me over again.

“How can we live in a society where someone goes to the shop to buy sweets and their life is taken?

“I would say to the people that did this, don’t let something like this rest on your conscience. Come forward. Speak.

By Kevin Quinn Police are searching for a motorcyclist as a baby remains in hospital with serious injuries a month after a road incident in Eltham.

On Monday, June 12, police started circulating an image of a rider after police were called to the scene at around 3pm on Thursday, May 11 on Eltham Hill.

Officers at the scene found a woman, 29, and an 18-month-old child who was in a buggy.

They were both taken to hospital but the baby remains in hospital with serious, life-changing injuries.

Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating.

Detective Constable Tristan Hunter, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “I would encourage anyone who knows who the rider might be to speak with us.

"They failed to stop at the scene following their reckless riding.

“A young child has suffered lifechanging injuries that will continue to require ongoing treatment, including rehab.

“Please call police and tell us what you know.”

On Thursday, 18 May, a teenaged boy was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail.

Four hours later police released the man on bail, reportedly telling jubilant protestors “the gentleman has returned to his address”.

Footage quickly emerged of altercations between officers and protesters. Chaotic scenes showed people tumbling over and people screaming.

In June last year, over 100 locals thwarted immigration officers attempting to detain a Nigerian man suspected of immigration offences on Evan Cook Close, just off Queens Road.

Many people, including local politicians, claimed footage showed officers being "heavy handed" by shoving and kicking protestors.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct launched an investigation and has now concluded the force used was “necessary, reasonable and proportionate”.

IOPC director Steve Noonan said: “We understand the concern that was raised regarding this incident and the force that was used by some of the officers.

“We completed a thorough investigation which included reviewing a substantial amount of footage.

“In the circumstances, where the officers were attempting to manage over 100 people involved in a protest, we found they acted in line with national guidance on use of force and the force they did use was necessary, reasonable and proportionate.”

The incident began on Saturday, June 11, when Immigration Enforcement attended an address to arrest a man suspected of overstaying his visa.

Shortly before 1.30pm, police were called to the scene to a report that a group of people were obstructing the immigration officers, who had put the man in their van.

Over the following hours, what began as a small group of protestors grew to become a vast crowd of people obstructing

“The response by @metpoliceuk to peaceful protestors sitting on the ground should not be violence. We must defend the right to protest.”

The IOPC launched its investigation on June 18, 2022, which concluded in January

A south London council could ban ice cream vans on over 30 roads

Local Democracy Reporter A South London council has revealed plans to ban travelling ice cream vans from selling on over 30 roads across the borough.

Greenwich Council has published a

list of streets across Greenwich and Woolwich town centres where ice cream vans could be prohibited from trading.

Council documents said the list had been created due to the “nuisance” and impact on public amenity that the trading can attract. They also highlighted potential air quality improvements

due to reduced emissions from “engine idling”.

The list includes 20 roads in Woolwich town centre and 13 in Greenwich town centre. Included in the list are Beresford Square, Powis Street and General Gordon Square in Woolwich, as well as Greenwich High Road and Cutty Sark Gardens in Greenwich.

According to council documents, King William Walk beside Greenwich Park was added to the list given its “sensitive” location in a World Heritage Site and Conservation Area.

Attractions along the street include St Mary’s Gates, Royal Museums Greenwich and the Old Royal Naval College.

The decision on the street came after

Seven officers were issued with misconduct notices - notifications for officers that their conduct is being investigated It is the IOPC’s job to decide whether police should face misconduct hearings.

In this case, it concluded: “At the end of our investigation we determined none of these seven officers, or any other a complaint and two ombudsman enquiries had been received due to an ice cream trader selling there.

A representative from the Planning Inspectorate said in their report that the queue from an ice cream van would have a negative impact as it would visually “clutter” the views of the surrounding attractions, as well as creating a “bottleneck” at the main entrance to the museums.

They said: “The partial screening and cluttering of views would adversely affect the enjoyment of visitors to this area as it would make the experience of this significant tourism attraction less pleasurable and it would make it more difficult for them to appreciate the significance and attractiveness of the area.”

Council officers said in their report that vendors who own ice cream vans may trade for 15 minutes or less on roads in the borough that are not exempt. Conditions for selling include moving locations within 15 minutes and not returning to the same street on the same day.

The decision on ice cream vans in the borough was due to be decided at a cabinet meeting for Greenwich Council on Wednesday June 14 after the paper went to press.

Police were called to Rymer Street, a residential street off Dulwich Road, at 7.50pm, to reports of a stabbing.

They discovered a man, in his 30s, suffering from stab wounds. He was rushed to hospital where his condition was considered non-lifethreatening.

There have been no arrests and police enquiries are ongoing.

The area would have been busy at the time given that the popular Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell Park was still underway.

Walworth primary children call for fairer access to child benefits for migrant families

Kids from a Walworth primary school, whose parents are immigrants with no recourse to public funds, joined an emotional protest outside Parliament last week to call for fairer access to child benefits.

On Tuesday, June 6, pupils from Surrey Square Primary in Walworth joined teachers, parents and community leaders in Victoria Tower Gardens to demand that every child in the UK receives child benefits.

It is part of a campaign led by Citizens UK following research by the Migration Observatory, which estimates that 180,000 children in the UK live with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF). This is a condition attached to visas which means some families cannot access benefits and the social safety net, even when they are working and paying taxes.

As a result, they do not receive Child Benefits, which are £24 each week for the first child, and £15.90 for any subsequent children i.e. at least £1,248 per year. Many parents will have NRPF for ten years - the majority of childhood.

One mother who knows exactly what that is like is 31-year-old Melissa, who also has a child at Surrey Square. Melissa explained that although she was born in America herself, she has been in the UK for nearly twenty years. "I've never had access to public funds," she explained, despite working here and paying taxes.

Her daughter, Jessica, 11, was born in the UK but was only able to get her British Passport last year (when she turned ten).

"She has her passport now, but she still has no access to public funds, because I

don't," Jessica explained.

Melissa's story is like many of the parents at the protest - because she was an immigrant, her child has never been able to access child benefits, even though she was born here.

She commented on what a difference it would have made: "It is very hard for us as immigrants to provide for our children and get well-paid jobs. It would help a lot - not for anything specific but £24 a week could have made things easier for Jessica growing up."

At the demonstration, children and parents from across London shared personal stories about how this welfare restriction impacts them. They waved flags and chanted "every child should benefit", finishing by throwing paper currency in the air "to symbolise the money that many children are missing out on."

Albinia Stanley, Community Organiser from Citizens UK, said: "This issue is particularly urgent due to the costof-living crisis, which has left families struggling to meet their day-to-day needs, leaving children vulnerable to destitution and exploitation.

"Research by LSE shows how growing up with the NRPF welfare ban significantly impacts a child’s health, well-being, and life chances."

Last year, in April 2022, after a campaign led by Citizens UK and other organisations, the government permanently extended free school meal eligibility to all children across the UK regardless of citizenship.

The Citizens UK #EveryChildShouldBenefit Campaign is now calling for the government to extend Child Benefits to every child, no matter what their immigration status.

YouTube coach Joe Wicks makes workout video at St Thomas'

online fitness coach Joe Wicks, who rose to fame for his viral workout videos, joined the staff at St Thomas' to help make exercise easier for people with Parkinson's.

Wicks, known as 'The Body Coach', has made a new workout video designed for people with Parkinson's.

The famous fitness trainer worked with a specialised neuro-physiotherapist at St Thomas' Hospital to release the free online video.

It comprises ten different exercises, including a one-minute ‘sit to stand’ challenge, all of which have been designed to be done at home.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects about 145,000 people in the UK. The main symptoms include slow movement, stiffness and tremor but it can also affect people’s walking, sleep and memory.

Research has shown that taking part in regular physical activity can positively impact patients’ symptoms, both physically and mentally.

Joe says he is passionate about making exercise accessible to everyone regardless of ability.

“Taking part in regular exercise has many benefits not just for your physical

"It was great to come down to St Thomas’ Hospital to hear more about how exercise can help people with Parkinson’s manage their symptoms

and to create this workout video tailored specifically for them.”

He was assisted by Milly Khan, a highly specialist neuro-physiotherapist at Guy’s and St Thomas.'

“Physical activity is a really

important component of treatment for Parkinson’s," she explained, "and the condition shouldn’t be a barrier to being physically active.

“It’s important that physical activity sessions contain components of aerobic

fitness, strength training, balance and core control, and stretching.

She added that it’s important for those with the condition to challenge their symptoms, and "do exercise you enjoy."

St Thomas’ Hospital hosts exercise classes for patients with Parkinson’s in six-weekly blocks. While visiting the hospital, Joe took part in one of the classes.

Carol Webb, from Eltham, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2019 and has previously attended exercise classes at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Carol, 52, said since her diagnosis, she has found regular exercise helpful.

“Taking part in regular exercise like yoga really helps to keep my joints flexible," she said.

"If I sit still for too long, my joints can feel stiff so it's good to keep moving. I found the exercise classes with Milly really helpful and, although tiring, it has given me the confidence to start a circuit training class locally - something I would not have thought possible previously.

“During lockdown, my youngest daughter and I took part in Joe’s online PE lessons in our garden, so it’s been exciting to take part in this video alongside him,” she added.

Police appeal after woman 'raped in broad daylight' in Burgess Park

By Herbie Russell Police are appealing to the public after a woman reported being raped in broad daylight by a man in Burgess Park, on Friday, May 26.

The woman, in her twenties, told police she was assaulted in the Cobourg Nature Reserve - a small patch of woodland just east of the lake - between 9.30 and 10.15am.

Police have released a detailed description of the suspect, described as black, in his late twenties or early 30s, with a scar under his eye on the left side of his face.

Detective Constable Timea Fazekas, leading the investigation, said: “This was a truly horrific incident for the victim and she is being fully supported by officers specially trained to investigate sexual offences.

Could the long-promised Marks & Spencer in Crystal Palace finally begin development next year?

Local Democracy Reporter After more than a decade of work, a derelict building in the popular Crystal Palace triangle could finally get underway in 2024. But the building in question is on offer to be rented out again, casting doubt on the possibility of progress next year.

The application to demolish buildings behind Victory Place and Carberry Road, off Westow Street, to make way for an apart-hotel, flats and shop space were originally approved in 2013, and in 2018 the developer said a new M&S store is interested in opening on the ground floor.

In 2022 the owners St Aidans Holdings submitted a change to the planning approval to replace the apart-hotel rooms with more flats. This was approved by Croydon Council and means the total number of flats provided as part of the development would rise from 33 to 43.

A representative of Arcus, which was the agent on the latest application said development is expected to “kick off” early next year.

'Experienced bag snatchers' jailed after arrest in London Bridge station

A pair of “experienced bag snatchers” who targeted victims at station cafes have been jailed two-and-a-half months after being arrested at London Bridge.

Hernan Montero-Villegas, 54, and Miguel Angel Contreras-Nova, 39, got eighteen and fourteen-month sentences respectively.

PC Steve Bryan said: “MonteroVillegas and Contreras-Nova are clearly experienced bag snatchers who have refined their tactics to avoid being detected by the unsuspecting victims they target.”

“I hope the adequately long prison terms handed down to them provide the three victims with the comfort of justice being served,” he added.

People were targeted at Waterloo, Liverpool Street and St Pancras stations.

On February 25, a 54-year-old woman, who was sat drinking a cup of tea in Liverpool Street station’s Soho Coffee

café, fell victim to Montero-Villegas.

He spotted her bag on the floor and manoeuvred it away with his foot before concealing it with his own rucksack.

Montero-Villegas then left with her bag which contained €100, £40, her driving licence, bank cards and a phone charger.

On March 22, Montero-Villegas and Contreras-Nova struck at the Starbucks inside Waterloo Station, this time targeting a 50-year-old woman.

Contreras-Nova pretended to be on the phone and walked around the café while Montero-Villegas again used his foot to take the bag away from the victim. He picked it up and left the café along with Contreras-Nova. The woman’s bag contained a purse with £200 inside and other items including reading glasses and an umbrella.

The third offence took place on March 28 in the Paul Express cafe in St Pancras Station, where the pair combined to steal a 50-year-old man’s satchel. Inside were two Eurostar tickets, a film script,

earphones, a phone charger and his passport.

Two days later, on March 30, a British Transport Police officer spotted the pair while patrolling London Bridge station.

The officer arrested them in connection to the bag thefts. Once in police custody, they were further arrested for money laundering and being in possession of more than £3,000.

Montero-Villegas and Contreras-Nova, both of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of theft and one count of money laundering.

A judge handed them their sentences, a combined 32 months, at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday, June 8.

PC Steve Bryan said: “What they failed to realise is that the railway is a CCTVrich environment and here at BTP we are relentless in our pursuit of thieves.

We won’t stop until they’re put before the courts. If you’re a victim of theft on the railway, report it to us as soon as possible by texting 61016 – we’ll always take swift action.”

The school that went from failing to ‘outstanding’ and doesn’t give detentions Springfield Village

By Adrian Zorzut Local Democracy Reporter A London primary school has gone from ‘requiring improvement’ to being praised for its pupils’ ‘outstanding’ behaviour in less than two years and its head teacher says one of the key reasons is they don’t give pupils detentions.

Melcombe Primary School in Hammersmith went from underperforming to receiving the top rating from Ofsted after introducing new staff, changing the school uniform, overhauling the teaching and even building a better playground.

The school was taken over by Hammersmith and Fulham Council and Thames Federation in early 2020 after inspectors raised concerns over Melcombe’s teaching standards during a visit two years earlier.

They installed a new head teacher in April 2021, alongside new staff and a new vision for the school.

Head teacher Anne-Marie Strachan said the school’s transformation is built on “having a clear vision of what we want for the children and school community, and being able to communicate that widely and having a clear plan on how to do that”.

Students received uniforms with a new logo and money was ploughed into refurbishing classrooms and getting more equipment in the playground, which had been left “bare”, according to Ms Strachan.

She said: “The kids could visibly see the transformation in front of their eyes.”

The school got new climbing equipment and a new library and will unveil a garden to coincide with the King’s Coronation.

But it is the school’s approach to student behaviour that sets it apart, the head says.

Melcombe Primary no longer hands out detentions.

Instead, kids memorise the “5 golden rules” which include being polite, putting in your best effort, being honest, taking care of yours and other’s belongings and “keeping your hands and feet and your unkind words to yourself”.

Ms Strachan said: “It’s enforced right across the school, from reception up to Year 6 and we find it really works for us.”

Though sanctioning still exists, it’s not “over-the-top” and naughtier students are given more time and support to correct their behaviour, Ms Strachan explained.

Melcombe Primary School went from failing to 'outstanding in two years.

She said: “We’re about positive reinforcement. We believe in telling the child ‘right, why was that wrong and now think about what you could have done’ and again reference back to the 5 golden rules.”

The changes haven’t gone unnoticed.

Ofsted rated Melcombe Primary as ‘good’ with an ‘outstanding’ approach to behaviour during a visit in February.

Inspectors wrote: “Pupils are happy, safe and immensely proud of their school. Leaders and staff expect pupils to achieve well.

“Staff create an environment where everyone is supported to succeed. As a result, pupils thrive under their care and value their education.”

They said pupils’ behaviour was “exemplary” and hailed the partnership with Kensington Wade School to teach pupils Mandarin as well as Spanish.

The report said: “Pupils share their learning experiences with another school that shares the same building.

"Pupils from both schools enjoyed learning together about the cultural significance of Chinese New Year and watching a live ‘lion dance’.

“Leaders arrange for older pupils to visit local secondary schools in preparation for the next stage of their

education.”

It added: “Pupils love reading.

Leaders set specific reading challenges for each year group and every pupil’s success is celebrated in the classroom.”

However, inspectors said the curriculum in some areas still needed work. They said: “Staff expertise is not consistently strong. Although leaders have established what pupils need to learn, they have not considered how they will check that pupils are remembering the essential knowledge taught.

“As a result, pupils’ errors and misconceptions are not consistently identified and addressed. This limits some pupils from deepening their understanding and tackling more difficult ideas in these subjects.”

This is in stark contrast to 2019 though, when Ofsted reported staff were not teaching phonics properly, with some even lacking the expertise.

At times, teachers were also unaware of their students’ reading skills, according to the report at the time.

Ofsted also criticised teachers for not checking their students’ homework often enough in 2019.

Ms Strachan said the impressive turnaround was down to her staff and governers. She said: “To be honest, it

was a collective effort… it was about rewriting the vision, about discussing with the governors, and again with the children and what they want from the school.”

Jolie Collett, Co-Chair of Governors, said: “The transformation of Melcombe in not even two years from a position where it was failing pupils and parents, to the energised and dynamic school it is today, is nothing short of extraordinary.

“The vision, energy and attention to detail demonstrated by the senior leadership team, in particular, is remarkable and it is their passion and desire to enrich the lives of local children which has led to today’s positive outcome.”

Peter Haylock, Director of Education at Hammersmith & Fulham Council, said: “The local authority is delighted with the inspection result at Melcombe.

"It now proudly offers local families and the wider community a strong educational experience which is highlighted by the outstanding grade for behaviour and attitude.

“I would like to congratulate everyone that has been involved in the transformation, particularly Anne-Marie Strachan of the Thames Federation.”

Brockwell Park will hold two more events over 36 days this summer

Local Democracy Reporter A South London park that hosted six festivals in less than two weeks will be taken over by more events for over a month in summer, including a giant Pokémon hunt.

Brockwell Park in Lambeth will welcome thousands of visitors for three events between June and September 2023.

As well as last weekend’s Lambeth Country Show, a giant Pokémon hunt in August and a 5k charity walk to raise money to combat prostate cancer will be held in September.

Scott Ainslie, Lambeth Green group’s co-leader, said he couldn’t stand in the way of what he dubbed “one of the greatest cultural events on earth,” the Lambeth Country Show.

Lambeth councillors approved the use of the park for the Lambeth Country Show and the two other events just days after some people living near the park complained of unbearable noise from music festivals held in the park over the last two weekends. Some residents have also expressed anger at a large part of the park being fenced off since mid-May for the events.

Francis Martin, who lives in Herne Hill near to the park, said the festivals were too big. He told a council planning

meeting on June 6: “I don’t particularly object to holding festivals in Brockwell Park. My supposition is that they’re too big. Because they’re too big they end up being too loud.”

He added that he felt councillors were playing lip service to democracy as the three events had already been planned and advertised.

Mr Martin said: “It seems to me you don’t really have a choice whether or not to approve this planning application as in these events are already permanently organised, the infrastructure is already in place… I’m sure you will approve the event today and not stop Lambeth Country Show for the first time in 60 years.”

A planning committee made up of five Labour councillors and one Green councillor voted to wave through the 36 days of events at a meeting on Tuesday June 6. The 36 days includes the time spent installing and taking down stages and fencing.

Cllr Ainslie, member for Streatham St Leonards, added: “I would just caution against over the overuse of the park and the over commercialisation of it but it’s probably more to do with the permitted development events rather than this particular planning application so on this particular planning application I support it wholeheartedly.”

Fears office extension will dwarf London’s oldest Gothic Cathedral

Local Democracy Reporter An office block next to London’s oldest Gothic church will become even taller despite fears the cathedral will be dwarfed by the plans.

Two floors will be added to six-storey Minerva House in Southwark, as well as roof terraces with 360 degree views of the capital, under proposals approved by the council on June 6.

The 1980s office block sits across the street from Grade-I listed Southwark Cathedral, which was built over 600 years ago between 1220 and 1420. But some local residents fear the upwards extension of the building will further overshadow the historic cathedral and encourage more drunken revellers to use a nearby square as a toilet.

Amir Eden, chair of neighbourhood group Living Bankside, told a Southwark Council planning meeting the proposals would significantly impact the cathedral.

Mr Eden, who lives locally, said: “[Southwark Cathedral] stands to be further dwarfed. […] I find myself perplexed by the utter lack of substance of this proposal. I mean look at it. Juxtapose it with the cathedral and the conservation area and ask yourself ‘is it in keeping?’

“If you look at certain views from West or East, the cathedral’s tower is going to be impacted significantly. You stand to have this crown jewel that will

not be seen as it is currently.”

Mr Eden said that he was particularly disappointed that developer Great Portland Estates [GPE] had failed to offer any money to improve nearby Minerva Square, which is home to the permanent memorial to those who lost

their life in the London Bridge terror attack.

He added: “The square is a victim to vandalism and human fouling by inebriated visitors. The applicant’s proposed uses will add to these problems.”

As part of the plans, GPE has agreed to put £425,000 towards improving Southwark Cathedral, as well as making the council a £393,000 carbon offset payment.

The new roof terraces will be restricted to use between 9am and

8pm, Monday to Friday and affordable workspace available at a 25 per cent discount to market rates will be included in the development.

James Shipton, senior development manager at GPE, said the extension would create new jobs and improve the attractiveness of the area. He told the meeting: “Our net zero carbon proposal reuses 12,000 sq metres of existing office space and creates a further 6,000 sq metres of new space.

“Overall it is estimated the improved building will support more than 1,600 local jobs, boosting the local economy.

We are proposing significant public realm improvements, including a new pedestrian route through the building to enhance the Jubilee Walkway, as well as a new attractively landscaped garden in Montague Close.”

Minerva House, which is on the bank of the River Thames, sits within the capital’s Central Activity Zone, an area described by City Hall as “one of the world’s most attractive and competitive business locations.”

City Hall estimates there is a need for 177,000 more office jobs in the area between 2011 and 2031.

A council planning committee made up of four Labour councillors and one Liberal Democrat approved the plans unanimously on June 6. Explaining her decision, Kath Whittam, Labour councillor for Rotherhithe said: “Minerva House at the moment looks horrible. I think it will improve the look.”

Armed robber who targeted south London bookmakers 'staffed by women' is jailed for eight years A “dangerous” criminal who went on a four-month armed robbery spree across south London has been jailed for a minimum of eight years.

Michael Lindo, 41, terrorised bookmakers across south London from May to September 2022.

Masked, and waving a “highly convincing” imitation firearm, Lindo “thought nothing of terrifying the victims” many of whom “feared for their lives”.

Lindo, who is of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to fifteen offences relating to a total of nine armed and attempted armed robberies. He was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on Wednesday, June 7.

Detective Sergeant Paul Bartlett, of the Met Police Flying Squad, said: "Lindo is a prolific and dangerous man who thought nothing of terrifying the victims in these incidents in order to get what he wanted.

"These are people who were going about their work as normal when they were thrust into situations in which they feared for their lives.

“The effects of these kinds of incidents can't be underestimated; there may be no physical injury but the psychological impact can be devastating.

"It is no exaggeration to say that London is a safer place with him behind bars.”

Lindo targeted bookmakers across south and south east London, including Peckham, Streatham and Brixton.

In a single day, on Thursday, June 11, he committed attempted armed robberies at three separate gambling shops.

Armed robber Michael Lindo has been jailed.

demand cash from the cashier, while threatening them with his imitation firearm.

According to a sentencing note, he often targeted premises where a lone female member of staff was working usually during opening or closing time when the shops were empty.

In total, eleven different staff members were the victims of his crime spree, some of whom suffered serious psychological harm. From May to September 2022, Lindo stole just over £9,000.

Officers from the Flying Squad, an elite Met Police branch set up to tackle

violent crime, began investigating the nice incidents as linked.

They identified Lindo in September 2022 and officers started surveilling him.

On September 20, 2022, officers

watched as he approached a bookmakers in London Road, Tooting, before using an imitation firearm to threaten staff.

Firearms officers descended and Lindo was swiftly arrested.

He had been on licence having served six years of an eleven-year sentence for a previous armed robbery.

Ms Strachan revealed that Hideaway, which opened in December 2009, had never made a profit after she had to take out a £1.25 million loan to refurbish the former snooker club as a music venue.

She said the club needed to open seven days a week in order to become viable but

could only ever open on three days due to poor transport connections to Streatham.

Describing the impact of the pandemic as “crippling,” Ms Strachan said: “It is important to note that the building is in a very poor condition. Surveys confirming asbestos on the ground floor, the roof and other areas.

"The roof is also in a poor state, [and] partially collapsed in 2017 following several days of heavy rainfall.”

She added that the smaller venue proposed would also reduce the amount the club had to spend on maintenance.

The basement space in the hotel would house approximately 123 people whereas Hideaway’s ex-venue could cater for around 250.

Nicole Griffiths, the local Green councillor for the area, said she welcomed the principle of a hotel but feared the proposed building was too big.

In a statement read out on her behalf at the meeting, Cllr Griffths, co-leader of Lambeth’s Green group, said: “The idea of a hotel on this site is good for Streatham but a more sympathetically designed development that is low-rise, including community amenities and truly affordable homes alongside a small hotel would be preferential.”

A council planning committee made up of five Labour councillors and one Green councillor went on to approve the new hotel and basement venue.

Scott Ainslie, Green councillor for Streatham St Leonard’s, said he was keen for the new venue to allow Hideaway to regain its former reputation for worldclass jazz. Describing the venue as “very close” to his heart, Cllr Ainslie said: “Suddenly Streatham was on the map as being one of the best jazz clubs, beating Ronnie Scott’s in certain awards.

“A compelling case has been made by the previous owner of the music venue… whilst I do know it impacts some residents I’m mindful to approve this,” added Cllr Ainslie, co-leader of Lambeth’s Green group.

Hideaway in Streatham closed its doors in March 2020 after struggling to foot a £750,000 bill for serious repairs needed to the venue. But the club, which has been dubbed South London’s answer to Soho’s internationally famous jazz bar Ronnie Scott’s, could now reopen in the basement of a new hotel planned on the site of its former home.

Under plans approved by Lambeth Council on June 6, a 114-bed hotel will be built on land behind Streatham High Road occupied by the now closed club.

Frances Strachan, boss of Hideaway, said the new venue was essential if the award-winning club was to reopen in Streatham.

She told a council planning meeting on June 6: “The main reason for the nonviability of the club was the associated costs of the sheer size of the building.

Joe Coughlan Local Democracy Reporter Despite Bexley getting classed as a London borough in 1965, some Crayford residents maintain living on the fringe is very different to inner-city life and they feel like tourists when they travel to the centre.

Dupwe Oni, 50, has run People’s Launderette in Crayford for the past 20 years. The business owner said that Central London is such a “different ballgame” to outer areas such as Crayford that she doesn’t feel like she really lives in the city.

“When I go into London, I feel like I’m going into a big place," she said.

"I look like a lost person when I go.

We feel that we’re not Londoners, personally, that’s how I feel.”

Molly Irlem, 24, works at the Roar Music Academy in Crayford. She said when asked where she comes from, she gives a different answer depending on who she is talking with.

She added: “If anyone asked me, I’d say I’m from London, I’m sticking to my roots… it’s hard, it depends… but if upper-class people talk to me then I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m from Kent.’”

Residents also claim they face different issues living on the edge of the capital and said it can be hard getting lumped in with Londonwide policies such as the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expansion.

A shop worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said while locals are grateful for the transport links available by being a London borough, lots dislike how schemes such as ULEZ are affecting residents. From August this year, people across London will have to pay £12.50 a day to drive if their vehicle is not deemed environmentally friendly enough.

They told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “People here don’t want to be part of London because of ULEZ. They say the same thing, what’s the point in ULEZ when we’re not in London? But with certain things, they say that they are in London, like public transport, so they’re trying to benefit from that.”

Stuart Lynch, 45, owner of The Penny Farthing micro-pub in Crayford, said a lot of his customers aren’t happy about the ULEZ expansion.

The pub owner said he’s worried about how the scheme could affect local businesses: “If people have got older cars, they won’t pop to the shops, get their haircut or come to have a pint.

"They aren’t going to pay £12.50 to come and have a pint, are they? They’ll go somewhere else. It’s not ideal.”

George Best, 25, who works at The Penny Farthing, said he estimates about 70 per cent of the pub’s customers drive. Mr Best said: “They have diesel cars, they’ve had loads of protests. So it’s affecting people, definitely.”

He added: “It just seems very excessive, £12.50. I think that’s the sort of sentiment that we’re getting from everyone else as well.”

Last month, the High Court gave permission for a judicial review into the proposed ULEZ expansion. The move came after Bexley Council legally challenged the scheme in a coalition with Bromley, Hillingdon, Harrow and Surrey County councils.

Councillor Baroness O’Neill of Bexley OBE, Leader of the Council, said: “We are well aware of the strong feelings generated by the Mayor’s plan to expand the ULEZ. "Residents gave us a mandate to fight this at the elections in May 2022 and by expressing their opposition in their responses to last year’s public consultation – the results of which the Mayor of London chose to ignore.”

The council leader said Bexley Council supported improvements to air quality but disagreed with the planned expansion given the borough’s poor public transport infrastructure and reliance on cars.

She said that the council planned to continue their legal challenge against the Mayor of London.

She added: “The Mayor’s message that it’s okay to pollute if you can afford the £12.50 a day ULEZ charge is the wrong one.

"The charge will hit many of our residents and businesses hard and it will discourage people from outside

London from travelling into our borough.

"It could increase the cost of some services residents need and affect the wellbeing of those who travel into Bexley to visit family, friends or health providers.”

Speaking about ULEZ, Ms Irlem argues that the zone will affect some residents more than others and said while she would be able to drive up and down her road for free once the boundary extends, as she drives off the street she would be charged.

She added: “This area is really sporadic for being affected. So you might get a couple of families that are really badly affected and some that aren’t but lots of our people get public transport here because it’s so easy.”

Regular trains from Crayford station allow locals to get to London Bridge in just over half an hour. Several buses in the area also serve routes to Kent and other towns in Bexley such as Sidcup or Welling.

Christina Calderato, TfL’s Director of Strategy and Policy, said schemes such as ULEZ had been designed to encourage more sustainable travel choices among Londoners.

She also said that residents in outer areas of London will benefit from the Superloop, a recently announced express bus service connecting outer London town centres.

Ms Calderato said: “Our proposals for Superloop would create a game-

changing new network of bus services and is a significant step in the Mayor’s commitment to improve the bus network in outer London, adding over 4million extra kilometres to bus services and complementing earlier plans to add over 1 million kilometres to the network, which will in turn support growth areas in a number of outer London locations.

"Any money received from the ULEZ is reinvested into London’s transport network.”

A Mayor of London spokesperson said that the ULEZ scheme has cut nearly half of the harmful emissions in inner London to date.

They said that nine out of ten cars in outer London are already ULEZ complaint, and that a £110m scrappage scheme is available for those requiring to update their vehicles.

They added: “The Mayor has been clear that the decision to expand the Ultra Low Emission Zone London-wide was not an easy one, but necessary to tackle toxic air pollution and the climate crisis.

"Around 4000 Londoners die prematurely each year due to air pollution, children are growing up with stunted lungs and thousands of people in our city are developing lifechanging illnesses, such as cancer, lung disease, dementia and asthma.

"In Bexley up to an estimated 162 people lose their lives prematurely each year due to toxic air pollution.”

Local Democracy Reporter Twice as many journeys in outer London are by car than in more central areas, a study has found, prompting calls for more cycle lanes and bus routes in the capital’s suburbs.

“Sadiq has delivered the transformational Elizabeth line, opened the new Barking Riverside station and is increasing and improving the bus network in outer London.”

She added that “improving walking and cycling options is also a huge priority for the Mayor” and that since 2016, the number of cycle routes in the capital has increased fivefold.

A report by the Centre for London think tank says millions of outer Londoners are forced to use their cars even for short journeys due to limited public transport.

It said that while recent announcements like the Superloop express bus network were “welcome”, they are, on their own “unlikely to do enough to meaningfully improve access to sustainable modes of transport for most people in outer London”.

While just 19 per cent of journeys in inner London are by car, the proportion rises to 38 per cent in outer boroughs.

Meanwhile, some 62 per cent of outer London residents said they would travel more often by public transport if it was

more reliable.

Some 45 per cent said they would rely on walking, cycling, or e-scootering if there were clearer or wider pavements.

Claire Harding, interim chief executive of Centre for London, said: “There are 5.4 million people in outer London – as many as live in Scotland. But many of these people don’t have access to the transport options that their inner London counterparts enjoy.

“Political rhetoric about transport spending in London hides the fact that millions of Londoners have limited options for getting around their neighbourhood.

“Improving the options people have to travel sustainably for local trips, not just commuting, is at the heart of making London a more liveable city.”

To reduce car usage in the suburbs the report’s authors said there should be more segregated cycle paths connecting the outer boroughs to one another, not just routes to and from central London.

Local Democracy Reporter A South London shopping centre could be ‘demolished’ in five to ten years’ time, with a large number of shops in the space being left “unoccupied” as a result.

Riverside Shopping Centre in Erith, Bexley, could be knocked down in the next five to ten years, according to plans found on the Bexley Council website.

The news comes in planning documents from Se & Se Consultancy Ltd, on behalf of ICMG Bexley.

The planning application seeks to convert a unit in the shopping centre

into a set of five classrooms.

It also said the large number of empty shops in the centre may allow for a lower price of rent to be achieved for the space.

Planning documents said: “It was mentioned that the owners of the shopping mall are considering demolishing the mall within the next five to ten years and replacing it with a new development.

"As a result, there is a significant number of unoccupied shops. ICMG Bexley plans to make use of this opportunity by renting space at below-market value for temporary use.”

They said there was a transaction period for selling the site, which allowed ICMG Bexley to make temporary use of the space during this time.

The unit was previously an Argos store before closing in 2020, with other retail shops such as Wilko shutting its doors in the centre last September.

The former Argos space has also been used as a pop-up cinema by the Erith Town Partnership, a collective of local businesses aimed at promoting the area for residents.

The plans said the space would be well suited as a learning centre given its town centre location.

They also said internal changes to the unit would be “minimal” and modular wall panels would be used to provide the classrooms.

They said: “ICMG Bexley believes that good education is the key to building cultural identity and successful social integration for all age groups… Educational services are offered within the framework of an educational curriculum which is prepared in accompaniment with specialised staff while ICMG Bexley units provide a variety of educational activities appropriate to their target groups.”

Riverside Shopping Centre was bought by BYM Capital in 2021, after being listed by Savills that year for

£18million.

The centre includes over 165,000 square feet of shop space and approximately 800 parking spaces.

A series of improvements to the centre were completed in 2022, including new shop fronts and a new dedicated unit to be used for free by local businesses.

A BYM Capital spokesperson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “We are currently exploring different options for the site but haven’t as yet developed any plans for our long-term interest in the site.

"Any plans would include discussions with the council and the community including a public consultation as part of any major planning application.”

Greenwich Council has received plans to reopen The Pickwick, a pub in Greenwich Peninsula dating back to the 1830s.

The plans, sent by Pure Let Greenwich Ltd, would see the current pub being restored and the accompanying bed and breakfast being refurbished.

An extra three storey building would also be added to the site, with office space on the ground floor.

Planning documents from Neel Dakshy Architecture, on behalf of the applicant, described the development as an “aparthotel”, with rooms including kitchen facilities for long or short-term rental.

The aparthotel would include 19 units across the original pub building and new development, including 16 serviced studio rooms.

The Pickwick on Woolwich Road was rebuilt in 1862 and has been closed since 2017, according to council documents.

The building also includes 16 rooms that were used for a bed and breakfast alongside the pub, all of which will be repurposed into rooms for the aparthotel.

The plans have received 22 objections from locals following two rounds of consultation in May 2020 and March 2023.

One objection was summarised in council documents as: “Poorly designed building described as a ‘monstrosity’, ‘hodgepodge’, ‘eyesore’, ‘towering’ and ‘mismatched’.”

The Housing Ombudsman – which deals with complaints about town hall landlords – found Lambeth Council spent a total of six years dragging its heels over an ongoing damp and mould problem in the unnamed woman’s flat.

In one instance, the council took five months to act on a safeguarding enquiry from her son’s primary school about black mould and a broken window pane in the house.

It was one of a catalogue of failures in the council’s handling of the case which led the woman and her son having to sleep in the same bed to keep warm because of dodgy windows elsewhere in the house.

While workmen sent by the council tried to fix the problems, the flat was left in darkness, surrounded by scaffolding, for over two years.

Meanwhile, the woman’s son developed what she described as “extreme eczema,” which his school reported was visible on his hands and body. He also started using an inhaler, which his mum blamed on mould in the property.

During an emergency leak at the flat in 2021, the woman called the fire brigade after the council failed to respond.

When firefighters arrived, they told her that live wires above the flat’s door were hazardous.

Lambeth Council said it had now completed all the works, apologised to the woman and paid her £6,500 compensation.

A council spokesperson added: “We acknowledge that our management of the repair was inadequate, and we recognize the need for greater proactive communication with our tenants.

“We acknowledge that a proactive approach is crucial when addressing water penetration and damp issues, as these can be highly disruptive for our residents and have the potential to escalate.

“The council is therefore actively working on establishing a Repairs Journey team and an Early Resolutions team dedicated to improving communication between the Repairs Service and our tenants, and managing and coordinating repair needs promptly and proactively.”

Bob Stewart, Conservative MP for Beckenham, has been charged with two counts of public order offences, including using “threatening or abusive” words towards an individual.

Police said in a statement on June 5 that the offence was “racially aggravated”.

The 73-year-old MP was charged with a second offence for using threatening words likely to cause “harassment, alarm or distress”.

Police said in their statement that the second offence related to the same incident and was included to “allow the court discretion on the racial element”.

Local Democracy Reporter deSPeraTe SouTh west londoners have begged for the reopening of their local pub, after its licence expired, describing it as a ‘lifeline’ for the community.

One neighbour of The World’s End, Hampton, said recent weeks had been ‘miserable’ with the pub closed.

An application from the pub’s landlord for a new premises licence at the venue, on Station Road, is set to be decided by Richmond Council’s licensing committee next week.

A council report said the pub was licensed but the licensee company “went into administration and the licence lapsed”.

The licence had not been transferred into the new landlord’s name, the report added, “within the statutory time frame so the applicant has been required to apply for a new premises licence”.

A total of 14 letters of support for the pub have been sent ahead of the hearing on Monday, June 5.

One neighbour said she almost became a recluse after her daughter’s father died three years ago, but found a support network at the pub with new friends who made her “feel so welcome”.

She said the pub has a “strong community vibe and it is currently being sorely missed”.

The local wrote: “It has encouraged lots of other local mothers to use it as a meeting point. As everyone is aware of just how friendly and kind everyone is there.”

She does not “hear a peep from the pub unless it’s an event night”, she added, “and when that happens it’s closed at a reasonable time with plenty of prior notice and the pubgoers are ushered along the road and away”.

Another neighbour said the pub has become her “second home” to meet friends, and punters “desperately need” it back. Granting the licence, she said, would “put an end to the miserable weeks that these have been for us all” with it closed.

She added: “Trouble and nuisance caused by the establishment, which is managed to the highest level of professionalism and integrity, is non-existent”.

A third supporter said the pub is a cross between a “community centre and a traditional local pub”. He said: “I don’t think any of us locals realised how important it was for our daily lives until it closed three weeks ago.”

Another punter said the pub is a “lifeline to myself and many others of all ages”.

A further resident, who has lived in Hampton for 42 years, visiting the pub for more than 25, described the venue as “lovely”. He commented: “It is part of the local community where many people frequent and socialise on a daily and weekly basis with both family and friends.”

But four objections to the application, which originally applied to sell booze as late as 11.30pm, were also sent to the council.

One objector said residents on nearby Warfield Road had “serious concerns”. She said residents had previously “suffered from excessive noise in the evenings” due to music in the beer garden

She added: “To extend the hours would put an intolerable burden on the residents, especially The World's End, 88 Station Road, Hampton during the summer months. There has also been bad behaviour late at night from people leaving the pub.”

Another local asked for the pub to close at 11pm “in line with other businesses in the vicinity and the fact that this is a quiet, residential area with many families with young children”.

He raised concerns about previous anti-social behaviour in the beer garden, including “loud swearing”, “banging against the fences shared with the neighbours” and “the throwing of objects over the fences into neighbouring gardens”.

In a letter addressing the objections, a licensing consultant representing the pub said 19 conditions had been agreed with the Metropolitan Police, with a further five proposed, in response to concerns.

This includes cutting the hours booze would be sold to 11am to 11pm on Mondays to Saturdays, and 12pm to 10.30pm on Sundays.

The application also requests the same hours for the playing of music at the pub. It would close at 11.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays, and 10.30pm on Sundays.

Proposed conditions to provide “further reassurance that the premises will be managed properly”, the letter said, include the licence holder operating the business “with general consideration in respect of the surrounding areas, neighbours and businesses”.

Signs “requesting patrons leave quietly and with consideration for neighbours in the vicinity” would be displayed at exits, the letter continued.

Another condition said no noise or vibration would “emanate from the premises so as to cause a nuisance to residents and neighbours”.

The letter added: “The responsible authorities are satisfied with the contents of this application as it stands, else they would have made representations themselves.

“I am sure that in their professional opinion adherence to these conditions will promote the licensing objectives and will not undermine them.

The inclusion of these additional conditions will most likely further reinforce their position.”

The licensing hearing on the application was due to take place on Monday June 5, with a decision published later in the month.

Capturing the Moment TaTe moderN’S new exhibition perhaps poses the question of whether in the age of the camera, we need artists, but there is no definitive answer, just more questions, writes Michael Holland.

aNdy hamilToN included in his act how strangers would point, stare and say that they know him from somewhere but can’t think where (he was once mistaken for serial killer dr harold Shipman).

That might be common for many people who only know him from his appearances on have i Got New for you, but andy hamilton is much more than being Paul merton’s funnier sidekick, writes Michael Holland.

As well as co-writing Outnumbered and Drop The Dead Donkey (a series that looks like getting an update and broadcast soon), he has also written for Not The Nine O’Clock News, Alas Smith & Jones, The Armstrong and Miller Show, Kate & Koji among a multitude of others. He has also

written for a vast amount of comedy programmes on the radio - some of which he also appears in. Weekending and The News Huddlines were standout shows for me.

And it was from these experiences that Hamilton filled up two hours for us with anecdotes in his An Evening With Andy Hamilton show at Blackheath Halls.

He did, however, add in some real gags when he told his Top Five jokes, all of which had been told to him by other comedians (all name-checked).

So, after many decades of working in comedy, he is fully qualified to have this new stand-up show to take around the UK. He understands his crowd, asking for a hands-up count on how many people didn’t have to pay for their

travel here. But he can also appeal to the kiddies as he is the voice of Dr Elephant, the dentist in Peppa Pig. The second half allowed Andy to show his expertise at improvising when he took random questions from the audience, although they did most often remind him of an anecdote to relate - all of which were fun as well as informative.

And he sung! It was supposedly an ancient folk song but I suspect it was a comedy song from his own hand that he had given a medieval twist…

Andy is at ease with the stage and audiences and he made us feel very comfortable being there spending an enjoyable evening with him.

Tate, however, is not asking whether one is better than the other, but is showing the symbiotic relationship between the two.

Many of the 20th century’s finest artists are included and all with something to say about their connection with photography.

Warhol used photographs perhaps more than a brush, and it may have been quite some time since Hockney and his camera last stood before an easel.

Yes, some iconic photos will catch a moment in time that says so much more than the actual image depicts, just as many paintings do. Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother became the face of every farmer and family ruined by weather and political decisions in 1930s America, while Lucian Freud’s paintings of unnamed people placed the human form front and centre, sometimes with just the artist’s tools between the sitter and the viewer to eliminate any chance of a backstory, but to

show that this was a painting and nothing else.

Francis Bacon, and Pablo Picasso, on the other hand, tried to show their subjects from more than one angle in one painting, thereby making each piece of art more than a moment in time. Bacon does not hide the fact that his Three Studies for Portrait of Lucian Freud were done from photographs.

A photograph cannot reference historical facts or iconic like art does when you see artists’ influences in past Masters unless it has been studiously set out to tell a specific story. Jeff Wall’s rather fantastic A Sudden Gust of Wind is a well-planned tableau that gives the impression the photographer magically caught the scene by chance.

So, yes, there is very obviously a close relationship between contemporary art and photography, but the real question is if it was ever disputed.

Capturing the Moment seems to be a reason to get some great artwork together in one place, and I am all for that.

can be more keenly felt - and all without hardly changing the script or the music, which still bounces merrily along as if the nation had nothing at all to worry about with its out-dated rules and regulations that are changed willy-nilly to suit - So no

I was always amused at the name of the place where the townsfolk forecast their weather by what a groundhog does, because Gobbler’s Knob sounds hilarious, but I was more amazed when I found out that this was a real place with this real tradition!

TV Weatherman Phil Connors wasn’t so keen and hates this annual trip to Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney small town USA - where all his scientific research into what weather can be expected is disregarded for a hairy rodent who pokes his head out of his hole and either runs back in or stays.

He has no time for the people there and lets them know it.

When the Punxsutawney folk said they fear a blizzard, Phil Connors laughs in their faces because his own report told everyone where that blizzard was going to be and it was not in their town.

If this musical version of Groundhog Day is a fraction as good as the film then it will be fantastic, and with Tim Minchin on music and lyrics you are already halfway there, writes Michael Holland.

about everyone he meets, plus his cameraman and producer, Rita. Then, of course, the blizzard does hit town and the TV crew are stranded there.

The next morning his alarm goes off, the radio comes on and tells him it is Groundhog Day. He mocks their stupidity for playing yesterday’s tape, and leaves his boarding house to find that everything is occurring exactly

as it did the day before. Then the next day, and the next, and the next, and the next, and you get where this is going.

Connors is stuck in a time loop and after a while it is driving him crazy. He seeks medical help and over-medicates and resorts to killing himself in several nasty ways because he knows that he will always wake up in his room with the radio telling him it is Groundhog

Day. After a while realises that if he is having to live and relive the same day every day, he can use it in his favour to seduce women by gradually finding out their likes and dislikes and every Groundhog Day he will woo them again with all their favourite things until he gets them into bed. He even robs the bank and pays for sex workers to come

change from reality there…

Set in what appears to be a Boy Scout Jamboree where there is more than enough opportunity to ramp up the camp, and with all the levels of hierarchy needed for this play, the scene is soon set in Titipu - Little England.

Jobs and titles are handed out like an outgoing Prime Minister’s Honours List: Albert Barr (Aidan Nightingale) has more roles than he can handle but can still manage to put paid to the High Executioner’s (David McKechnie) plan to marry Miss Violet Plumb (Sam Kipling) depending on what hat he has on. But that is only the start of the problems.

A wandering minstrel (Declan Egan) wanders in and immediately falls in love with Miss Plumb, then pays for information about her, and then finds out she is betrothed to Mr Cocoa (High Executioner), and then his betrothed Kitty Shaw (Christopher Hewitt) turns up and threatens to reveal his little secret, and then I put down the notebook and let the farcical frolics wash over me in a sea of soprano and falsetto as the action spills out from the stage to up in the balcony and along the aisles.

There are a few familiar faces from Union Theatre works and previous all-male Gilbert & Sullivans, chosen by the director because Sasha knows they do a good job, and they are very ably supplemented by a troupe who all create their own highlights in this amazing show, under the guidance of Adam Haigh on choreography and Musical Director Anto Buckley.

This Victorian bundle of laughs, where you soon forget that there are no females, is perfect for this Victorian music hall.

And so it goes on, but very cleverly so, Andy Karl is stupendous as Phil Connors. He plays him as a sleaze bag rather then the laconic character Bill Murray portrayed in the film version, but all his wiles cannot get Rita to have sex with him because he can’t hide his Jack-the-Lad ways, despite all the French poetry he quotes to court her.

Eventually, he has to change his life completely round and be nice to everyone to get anywhere.

This is an hi-energy show where there seems to be a constant beat of music and movement. There are great visuals, excellent lighting effects and some exceptionally good illusions that foxed everyone, but above all, for me, it was Tim Minchin’s songs that raised this show up. You know Minchin will take no prisoners and give no quarter to get a message across, which makes this for grownups and not kiddies.

I could see the lady next to me who had been coming to the Old Vic regularly since the 60s when tickets were 1s 6d - flinch when Connors offered Rita ‘soixante-neuf ce soir’ just before she slapped him.

I could watch this show again and again.

Southwark Cathedral will host a Windrush Anniversary Service to celebrate the 500 Caribbean men and woman who arrived on British shores 75 years ago.

The service on Thursday, June 22, 2023, will celebrate the significant role the Windrush Generation played in shaping Southwark and Britain’s cultural landscape. It will include worship, music, reflections, readings and prayer.

Richard Reddie, Director of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, said: “The Windrush generation’s impact on Britain has been incalculable.

“For instance, they have transformed the spiritual climate on these shores since 1948; they have been a blessing to historic churches that were previously struggling numbers-wise, while Black Pentecostal congregations are bucking the trend of decline in attendance. This is to be celebrated, and God is to be praised!”

Hundreds of people arrived at Tilbury Docks aboard the HMT Empire Windrush on June 21, 1946, drawn by promises of employment in post-war Britain.

They faced endemic racism upon their arrival - but that didn’t stop them from

flourishing and playing a pivotal role in the nation’s politics, arts, music and sport.

Many settled in and around Southwark, particularly in Peckham and Brixton.

In June 2022, a monument to the Windrush generation has been unveiled at Waterloo Station, made by Jamaican sculptor Basil Watson.

Southwark’s first black Mayor Sam King MBE, who passed away aged 90 in 2016, arrived in the UK aboard the famous HMT Windrush in 1948.

He moved to Sears Street, Camberwell, working as a postman, before founding the West Indian Gazette and co-organising

A free festival in Potters Fields Park will celebrate the culture of Uzbekistan, with traditional music, art and live cooking from a Guinnessworld record-winning chef.

the internationally recognised Notting Hill Carnival. A Southwark Blue Plaque has since been erected in his honour - a scheme pioneered by Southwark News.

The Rt Revd Dr Rosemarie Mallett, Bishop of Croydon, said: “This anniversary offers a unique moment in the life of our nation when we can honour the legacy of the Windrush generation and hear how younger voices are building on their extraordinary heritage.

“We will be celebrating their achievements and expressing our deep gratitude – as well as acknowledging the struggles that they have faced.”

Greenwich's National Maritime Museum marks Refugee Week

On Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 the first-ever Uzbek Food and Culture Festival in London will take place in the park by Tower Bridge in Bermondsey.

To honour the culture of Uzbekistan, a country in central Asia, visitors will be able to experience a day of traditional Uzbek food, music and crafts.

The centrepiece will be their worldfamous “Plov” dish (a rice dish made with lamb, onions and carrots), prepared by celebrity chef Bahriddin Chustiy, who currently holds the Guinness Book World Record for having prepared over seven tonnes of Plov to date.

The festival brings together a line-up of guests from both Uzbekistan and the UK’s Uzbek diaspora community, including craftspeople and leading lights from the world of dance and music.

An art exhibition will showcase the intricate artistry and traditional craftwork of Uzbek textiles, clothing and accessories.

In addition to the exhibition, the festival's stage is set to offer audiences sounds and beats from the heart of Central Asia, with sets from popular artists and DJs from Uzbekistan.

One of the other chefs who will be cooking on the day, is Muzaffar Sadykov, CEO and Executive Chef of OshPaz, located in Mercato Metropolitano.

He expressed his excitement about the festival, saying: "It has been my dream to introduce the national Uzbek dish, plov, to London.

"I am incredibly proud to be part of building a bridge between Uzbekistan and the vibrant culinary scene of London. By cooking one tonne of plov alongside the talented Bakhriddin Chustiy group, I hope to leave a lasting impression on the taste buds and imaginations of Londoners and visitors alike."

This historic festival has been supported

by OshPaz Authentic Street Food, Bahriddin Chustiy, several other local UK companies, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Uzbekistan, and the Staff Network of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

It will take place from 12 pm until 7 pm in Potters Fields Park, Tooley Street near Tower Bridge, entry is free.

Southwark Playhouse presents SHEWOLVES after it was a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe

By Holly O'Mahony Refugee Week is a UK-wide event designed to celebrate the contributions of those who have arrived in the UK seeking sanctuary.

Running from June 19 - 25 this year, it’s also a chance to raise awareness of the ongoing refugee crisis, which sees thousands of people risk their lives every year as they make dangerous journeys to the UK in pursuit of a better, safer life.

The National Maritime Museum marks the annual event with a programme of family-friendly, educational activities, and this year, it’s running on a theme of compassion.

“The theme of compassion was decided

by Refugee Week UK, and this year marks the 25th anniversary of their annual Refugee Week festival,” says Charlotte Paddock, Adults and Communities Participation Manager for Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG).

“We were inspired by the theme of compassion to create space for dialogue around the multiple challenges facing people with refugee and asylum seeker status, and the need to make Britain a more welcoming place for those seeking sanctuary,” she explains.

“For Refugee Week this year we are exploring the theme of compassion through a series of creative workshops and talks as well as a film screening, all showcasing the courageous and inspiring journeys made by people seeking sanctuary.”

Refugee Week events are taking place on Saturday June 17, with a further screening falling on June 21.

The Swimmers: A drawing workshop with artist Jay Percy WHEN: June 17, 11:30am - 1pm

Join artist Jay Percy who’s running a creative workshop inspired by Netflix documentary The Swimmers, which tells the remarkable story of Sara and Yusra Mardini, two sisters and swimmers who escape the war in Syria with dreams of competing in the Olympics.

On June 21, the Museum is hosting a screening of Netflix documentary The Swimmers, the biographical drama telling the remarkable true story of the Mardini

sisters, who travel from war-torn Syria to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The screening will be followed by a panel talk hosted by Iraqi-British writer Dalia Al-Dujaili and Syrian-Swiss filmmaker and actor Julie-Yara Atz. In it, they’ll discuss the charges brought by Greece against Sara Mardini and two dozen air workers, as well as the UK’s increasingly harsh laws on immigration.

“The National Maritime Museum’s collection holds countless stories of migration and it is an important reminder that people have been migrating around the globe for a variety of reasons all throughout history,” adds Charlotte.

Described as a 'coming-of-age story for anyone who has ever been a teen', SHEWOLVES follows two teenage girls who feel the weight of the world on their shoulders.

Armed with a backpack full of Poptarts, 'Priya' (Gurjot Dhaliwal) and 'Lou' (Harriet Waters) embark on a secret expedition into the wild.

They want to fight back against the climate crises and make real change, but when the wilderness closes in around them, first they have to overcome their differences and make their voices heard.

The show received widespread praise after it premiered at Edinburgh Fringe last year, including being named one of the 'Best Shows of 2022' by The Stage.

Despite being at the start of their careers, the two young leads are already seeing success on and off

the stage. Harriet Waters - a recent graduate from Mountview in Peckham - has already appeared in an ITV Drama (Scott and Bailey) and Gurjot Dhaliwal, performed at the Vaults Festival this year (Asian Girls in Therapy) after graduating from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

It will appear at Southwark Playhouse in Borough from Wednesday, June 21 and Saturday, July 8 - brought to the stage by SHEWOLVES Productions, in association with Southwark Playhouse and JOP Arts.

Previous audiences drew similarities to the films Booksmart, Little Miss Sunshine and Thelma & Louise.

The effect of the (Waiting and loading restrictions) Order would be:(a) in DRUID STREET and SWEENEY CRESCENT to update the layout of existing ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions so as to accommodate the provision of two-way cycle lanes aligned with the south-western edge of the north-eastern footway (extending from its junction with Tanner Street south-eastward to a point opposite the north-western kerb-line of Gedling Place, having a width throughout of 3 metres and semi-segregated from the adjoining motor vehicle traffic flow, by way of kerbs constructed in the carriageway and flexible bollards) and the removal of the parking place referred to in item 2 preceding; and (b) to add ‘at any time’ loading restrictions on existing double yellow lines, (i) in DRUID STREET northeast side, between its junction with Tanner Street and a point 13.5 metres south-east of the southeastern kerb-line build-out of Sweeney Crescent, and (ii) in SWEENEY CRESCENT on both sides, between its junction with Druid Street and a point 10 metres north-east of that junction.

By Paul Weaver Surrey’S BaTSmeN rampaged their way to a total of 258-6 as they hammered the Sussex Sharks by 124 runs at the 1st central county Ground, hove, last weekend, giving their run rate a boost on the way.

It was their highest-ever score in the Vitaly Blast – and the fourth highest by any side – beating their 250-6 against Kent in 2018. It left for dead their previous best against Sussex at Hove, the 221-8 they scored here in 2004.

The Sussex bowlers had no chance as Surrey replicated their form of two days before, when they piled up 236 against Glamorgan. And once again it was Laurie Evans (93) and Sam Curran (68) who created most of the mayhem, with a second wicket stand of 157, the highest for any wicket against Sussex. Surrey, one of the strongest sides in the competition, have lost just twice in eight outings – and one of those defeats, surprisingly, came against Sussex at The Oval last month.

Sussex had gone into the match fresh from their thrilling 4-run victory at Lord’s the previous evening, but still knowing they had to win virtually all their remaining fixtures to progress in the competition.

They got off to an encouraging start when Nathan McAndrew bowled Will Jacks with the last delivery of the opening over. But that was as good as it got for them.

The form of Evans, who scored a century in the Glamorgan game, was a painful reminder of how many top class white ball players Sussex have lost in recent seasons.

Evans was a member of the star-studded Sussex side that reached finals day in 2018, as was the Surrey captain last night, Chris Jordan.

After ten overs Surrey were 107 for one (they were 107 without loss at the same stage against Glamorgan). Evans reached his fifty off just 28 deliveries when he pulled Henry Crocombe to cow corner for six – over the hospitality tents in the southeast corner of the ground.

The 150 came up off the last ball of the 13th over, as Evans square-drove McAndrew for four. Curran was finally out at 163 when he edged Tymal Mills to short third man. He had hit six fours and four sixes, two in succession over wide mid-on.

Evans looked destined for his second hundred in three days but he was caught at wide mid-on by James Coles off the bowling of Crocombe. But for Surrey there was no loss of impetus as Jamie Overton thumped 24 runs off 11 balls and Tom

But after five overs they were 54 for one, and ahead of where Surrey had been at that stage. But then the impressive Tom Clark was stumped for a 23-ball 43. It needed something special from the Sharks captain Ravi Bopara. But he had scored just one when he attempted a slog-sweep against Sunil Narine and skied the ball to the

keeper.

The Sussex batsmen had to keep swinging in pursuit of their improbable target and, inevitably, the wickets tumbled as the required run rate soared to 20 an over. They were all out for 134 in the 15th over and after Clark, Tom Alsop and Danial Ibrahim tied for the second best score, 17.

Evans said: “It’s not often you get the chance to score two hundred in three days in this competition, but I fell just short today. I’m feeling in good shape. There have been bigger occasions for me, like finals days, but it’s been a very enjoyable couple of days.

“We feel a strong team and a strong squad. There are a lot of good players not playing, who are desperate to get in

the side. So that pushes us forward and makes us more hungry to make the most of the opportunities we’re given. Surrey is a good place to be.”

Sussex head Paul Farbrace added: “It was a contrast from last night, when we beat Middlesex. It was very ordinary bowling tonight, indefensible really.

“Surrey are a very, very good side, very powerful. I’m very envious of their batters striding out and looking like they’re going to hit us for four or six every ball. The thing that disappoints me most is our lack of nous. We bowled a lot of balls into the pitch, to the short side with the win blowing that way. We’ve got so much to learn. But the match turned with a seventh wicket stand of exactly 100 in 18 overs between Josh Dodd and skipper Tom Nevin. The captain was the more aggressive at first, but Dodd increased his tempo and both passed fifty in successive overs. Ramzan removed Nevin for 53,

off 60 balls, but Dodd continued to flay a tiring attack before Khan dismissed him for 84, off 82 balls, with the score on 257. Patrick George, making a rare first team appearance, picked up the ninth wicket, and Khan finished off the innings to end with figures of 4-93 off 17.3 overs.

Lodwick finished with 2-23 off 14 overs, while Ramzan had 2-54 off ten. Valley End were all out for 277 off 63.3 overs, leaving Dulwich 56 overs to bat.

Dodd then opened the bowling and took two wickets in his first three overs, removing Moin Khan for 4 and Wankhade, who fell to a brilliant catch by Young in the gully for 12, having faced just six balls. Skipper Chris Purshouse and

Ollie Steele took the score to 98 before Steele fell to Young for 44, off 70 balls, Purshouse fell to James Barnard three overs later having batted obdurately for 28, off 69 balls, and Ramzan was leg before to Young in the next over to make it 109-5 after 29 overs. A breezy knock of 27 off 23 balls by Booth lifted the score to 142-6 after 34 overs.

The visitors elected to bat but were held back by a superb opening spell by Harvey Booth and Jon Lodwick that saw only 20 runs on the board after 12 overs with Lodwick picking up the first wicket.

George pushed a single to raise the 200 and gain an extra batting point, but hopes of the last pair surviving another five overs to secure the draw were dashed when Dodd had Khan caught behind for 39, off 78 balls. Dodd had taken 4-21 off six overs in his third spell to finish with 6-54 off 13.5 overs.

Young took 2-55 off 14 and Barnard 2-43 off ten.

Dulwich drop to seventh after this defeat. This weekend they travel to Camberley, who are currently bottom of the table, and will need a win to keep them clear of the relegation zone.

The Addicks will be looking to launch a play-off charge having fallen short of expectations last season with their tenth-place finish.

Macauley Bonne is set to leave following the end of his short-term contract. Bonne made a name for

himself in his first spell at Charlton in the 2019-20 season. He continued the excellent form he had shown at Leyton Orient and earned himself a move to QPR. But it never really worked out for the striker, despite having a reasonably productive loan spell back in League One with Ipswich.

Last, January Bonne re-signed for Charlton hoping to rediscover his goalscoring form but only managed two goals in sixteen league games. Manager Dean Holden will now look into the transfer market to find a replacement frontman.

Elsewhere, Ryan Inniss will also not have his contract renewed. The defender featured 36 times last season and chipped in two goals and two assists but the Charlton hierarchy have decided to move in a different direction and let the former Crystal Palace man go.

Inniss is not the only regular starter from the 2022-23 season set to be let go. Albie Morgan, who has played over 100 times for his boyhood club, will also leave on a free. Morgan was somewhat of a maverick, regularly featuring in Charlton’s midfield three with an excellent eye for a pass.

Sean Clare will leave, too, after two years in London. The natural midfielder largely featured at right-back last season and was a standout performer for the Addicks throughout the campaign. He has since been linked with potential moves to QPR and Derby County.

Outside the first0team regulars, Alex Gilbey and Nathan Harness are the other two players set to leave. Gilbey spent the season on loan at Stevenage where he played 39 times in the league, but he won’t be part of Charlton’s plans for next season as he is returning to his former club MK Dons.

Lerma can be just the ticket for Palace

By Wilf MacDonnell JefferSoN lerma could be the perfect antidote to crystal Palace’s midfield woes that saw them go on a twelve-game winless run last season.

Lerma, 28, who will join from AFC Bournemouth following the expiry of his contract this month, possesses many of the qualities Palace have dearly missed in midfield areas.

In the summer of 2022, Palace made an astute signing to add some steel to their midfield. Cheick Doucoure joined from RC Lens for a fee of around £20 Million, and he went on to have an excellent first season in English football. Doucoure played a pivotal role in defending the back four with welltimed tackles and crucial interceptions, so much so that he won the player of the season award.

So the issue wasn’t Doucoure, but who to play alongside him. Patrick Vieira largely persisted with Jeff Schlupp as his midfield

partner and Michael Olise or Ebere Eze playing in the attacking midfield role.

Schlupp has been a key part of Crystal Palace cementing their Premier League status so successfully in recent years.

He’s a manager’s dream, combining a fantastic work ethic with a versatility that allows him to affect the game in a range of different roles. The issue lies with Schlupp’s technical ability. With Doucoure already breaking up the play so effectively, the player next to him really needs to be a more progressive passer, whereas many of Schlupp’s abilities overlap those of his midfield partner.

When Roy Hodgson returned to replace the sacked Vieira, he favoured Will Hughes in the midfield partnership. This seemed to provide a better balance but much of that could also be attributed to the sensational form of Eze in the No.10 role. The real question mark about Hughes being first choice would be his ability to stay fit across a league season. The midfielder

has completed 90 minutes just eight times across the last two league campaigns.

The other option was Luka Milivojevic in a midfield alongside both Doucoure and Schlupp. But the Serbian midfielder, who has been excellent for the Eagles, seemed to be struggling to keep up with the pace of the Premier League at 32 years old.

With both James McArthur and Milivojevic off the books, the door was open for another central midfielder. Palace moved early in the window and looked to have made a clever investment in Colombian international Lerma.

Lerma has developed as a player in the last two seasons, moving away from his tag as a physically dominant defensive midfielder to more of a box to box allrounder. He traditionally stood out for his ability to win key aerial duels in defensive areas, much like West Ham’s Tomas Soucek, and his tendency to sniff out danger.

But last season Lerma scored five times

for the Cherries as they escaped the drop.

The goals weren’t scrappy either, they were all quality finishes in their own right. Whether it was the thumping volley against Manchester City or the lovely curling effort from fifteen yards that all but doomed Leeds United. Of course, Palace fans will also remember his ridiculous long-range effort at Selhurst Park in 2019.

Despite his newfound attacking capacities, Lerma hasn’t disregarded his defensive duties. The Colombian still stands out as one of the best for ball recoveries in the Premier League.

All of which indicates that Lerma could provide the solution to what Palace have been missing in their midfield in recent times. The idea that Doucoure would be helped defensively but Lerma could also offer additional support going forward means that there should be even more space for the likes of Eze and Olise.

Perhaps Crystal Palace have found one missing part of the jigsaw.

The Spanish giants have been linked with a big-money move for Havertz as well as for Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.

Real need a replacement for striker Karim Benzema after the 35-year-old joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad this month.

Havertz, 24, is also a Champions League winner but in his three seasons with the club he has struggled to nail down a regular place in the side or consistently provide goals.

Real are reportedly lining up a bid for Havertz, who is valued at around £70million.

“I would be happy to play with Havertz again at club level,” Rudiger recently told AS. “Unfortunately, I cannot say much about it because, on the subject of transfers, my word is secondary.

It's the club's decision.”

Havertz, though, doesn’t appear to be in a rush to leave the club.

“I still have a two-year contract, I don't have to move every two to three years,” Havertz said.

“My girlfriend and I feel very comfortable in London. I love the club, the people and the fans.

“Football is very fast-paced, you never know what will happen.

We'll see what happens in the summer. I'm not thinking about that.”

Meanwhile, Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier would be interested in a move to Stamford Bridge, but only if it is to become first-choice goalkeeper in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Meslier, 23, was part of a Leeds United side that were relegated from the Premier League on the final day.

Chelsea have struggled with the goalkeeping department in recent seasons despite huge outlays.

The Blues spent almost £100million on Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga, the latter who is the most expensive goalkeeper in history, but both have been inconsistent.

It is set to be an area Pochettino looks at this summer.

“If it is to go and be on the bench, I'm not interested in that,” Meslier said. “If it's to be the number one, of course, you can't say, ‘I'm not interested in Chelsea’.

“I'd prefer to go to a less reputable club where I'll have more game time than a top European club where I'd sit on the bench.”

Forward joins for seven-figure fee months after January move for 26-year-old fell through

By John Kelly KEVIN NISBET felt joining Millwall in January would have been “a bit too soon” after he had just recovered from a long-term knee injury.

The Lions and Hibernian agreed a deal but the proposed move was called off late into the month.

Nisbet, 26, only made his first appearance of the last campaign in December before going on to scored twelve goals in 20 games.

Millwall confirmed the signing of Scotland international Nisbet for an undisclosed seven-figure fee at the weekend. ““I’m delighted. I was going to come in January and I felt it was maybe a bit too soon after my injury,” Nisbet said.

“The club are long-term admirers and I’m glad to get it done now. As soon as I spoke to the gaffer I knew I wanted to come here. If it wasn’t January it was definitely going to be the summer.

“I’m a winner. I like to win games and I like to get the fans onside as quickly as possible in games – winning tackles and winning headers. I think the fans will be delighted to see me here.

“I kept a close eye on [Millwall’s finish to the season]. They were very unlucky on the final day of the season. It is about pushing for the play-offs this year.”

Lions manager Gary Rowett was delighted to get the deal done.

“It’s a fabulous addition for us. Kevin is a goal-scorer but also has so many other attributes to contribute to the squad,” Rowett said.

"When I’ve spoken to him you can tell he’s raring to go and excited to play in front of our fans.

"He thrives off that energy from the supporters and I’m sure they will get that exact same buzz from him as well.”

Director of football operations Alex Aldridge added: "Kevin is a player who we are delighted to add to the ranks at Millwall.

"We have been long-term admirers of him and feel he is a player who can add quality and goals to Gary's squad.

"Kevin has really bought into the project at the club and we look forward to seeing what he can do in a Millwall shirt.”

Meanwhile, Hibernian manager Lee Johnson gave his reaction to Nisbet’s move.

“We’re disappointed to lose Nizzy after he did so well for us on his return but understand that he wanted to go on a new adventure down south,” Johnson said.

“Although he will be missed, this presents a new opportunity for someone else to step into that role. We thank him for his contribution and wish him all the best in England.”

Hibernian chief executive Ben Kensell added: “After deciding to stay in January, Kevin informed us that he wanted to leave the Football Club this summer, which we understood.

“Following those discussions, we had to ensure we got the best possible deal for him.

“We’re happy with the fee we received, and we wish him all the best for the future with Millwall.”

Dons pair get pro deals

Chelsea youngster trains with England CHELSEA STARLET Levi Colwill has trained with the England first team this week.

The 20-year-old had been called to represent the under-21 side for the upcoming European Championships, but was then summoned to first-team training following the withdrawals of Lewis Dunk and Jude Bellingham through injury.

Colwill has come through the ranks at Chelsea, and is the latest in a long line of existing talents to come through the famous Cobham academy site. He spent last season on loan at Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton and helped the Seagulls to

qualify for Europe for the first time in the club's history.

Colwill is yet to make a first-team appearance for Chelsea but has excited fans in his two loan spells away from the club.

Brighton have since had a bid of around £30 million for the defender rejected by Chelsea. It is understood Mauricio Pochettino is keen to have a look at the player but with the likes of Thiago Silva, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and Kalidou Koulibaly already at the club, the competition will be stiff.

Gareth Southgate will likely have called the young defender into training with a view to a first-team call-up in the near future.

Levi Colwill in action for Huddersfield Town

By Wilf MacDonnell AFC WIMBLEDON have confirmed two academy players have signed their first professional deals and will be added to Johnnie Jackson’s first-team squad for the 202324 campaign.

Attacking midfielder Morgan Williams has just returned from a loan spell with National League South side Eastbourne, which saw him feature seven times for The Sports. Williams, who has been at the club since the age of eight, also made his first-team Dons debut last season with a brief substitute cameo.

Academy manager Michael Hamilton told club’s media: “Morgan

has been with us from a very early age. He joined us as part of the preacademy, before joining the academy formally as an under-9. He’s been here all the way through. When he made his first-team debut at the end of last season it was a captivating moment.”

Also graduating to the first team is striker Paris Lock. Lock has returned from his loan spell at Chatham Town in the Isthmian League.

Hamilton said about Lock: “He’s an exciting player that can play off either the left or right side. His skill is his output. He always contributes with goals and creating chances.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that once the fans get to know him a little bit more, they’ll be really excited by what he can bring.”

Ex-Chelsea veteran impressed last season after returning to London from Brazil

By John Kelly fulham have offered a new oneyear contract to winger willian.

The 34-year-old Brazilian is due to be out of contract at the end of this month.

Former Chelsea attacker Willian is reported to be on £50,000 a week and a new deal would be on the same terms.

Willian helped the Cottagers to a tenth-place Premier League finish last season after he returned to London from Brazilian side Corinthians last summer. He scored five goals in league 27 appearances for the club, and also got six assists, convincing manager Marco Silva to try to retain him for another campaign.

After such a successful season, Silva is also in talks over a new contract.

As well as that pair, Fulham want to keep Tosin Adarabioyo and Manor Solomon. Captain Tom Cairney is being linked with a move to relegated Leicester City.

Meanwhile, Fulham are reported to be after Fiorentina defender Igor.

Defender Igor, 25, came on against West Ham United in the Europa Conference League final this month which the Hammers won 2-1 in the last minute.

Igor made 42 appearances last season, with nine starts coming in Europe.

with clubs including FC Red Bull Salzburg. His agent Marcelo Mascagni recently told Italian media: “I spoke to Fiorentina about Igor's future and the intention is to leave in the summer.

The Viola club is also in agreement. We haven't received any official offers yet, but we're looking around.”

Igor could be a replacement for Adarabioyo. The latter impressed last season, making 25 Premier League appearances. He is heading into the final twelve months of his contract and has attracted interest from other clubs.

Fending off interest in their players from clubs with greater financial power is set to be one of Fulham’s main challenges this summer.

Another player who enjoyed an excellent campaign, João Palhinha, has been linked with a move to a host of Premier League sides.

West Ham are reported to be one of them, with their midfielder and captain Declan Rice on the verge of leaving.

The Hammers see Palhinha as being his replacement. West Ham would receive a huge windfall for Rice, and will use part of the £100million transfer fee to get a like-for-like replacement.

Despite playing in a deep midfield role, Palhinha still managed four goals in 40 games in all competitions last season and it will be difficult for Fulham to keep hold of the 27-year-old this summer.

Addicks make may move

May, who turns 30 next month, has also been linked with Millwall, who confirmed the signing of Kevin Nisbet from Hibernian last weekend.

Gravesend-born May scored 20 goals for Cheltenham Town in League One last season. That form has caught the eye of Hollywood due and Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney after their side won promotion to League Two last season.

The transfer window opened on Wednesday (June 14) and it is set to be a busy one for south London clubs.

Addicks manager Dean Holden released over ten players when the retained list was announced after a tenth-place finish in League One last season. The club are expected to be active in the market as they target promotion next season.

Meanwhile, Charlton have announced a series of friendlies in July. Holden’s side will travel to Welling United on July 1 and to Dartford on July 8.

Charlton then head to Malaga in Spain for a training camp where they will face Leyton Orient on July 14. Their final two fixtures ahead of the start of the season will be at Neil Harris’ Gillingham on July 18, before they host Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen at The Valley on July 29.
