Kate Middleton has officially opened a new children’s surgery at Evelina Children’s Hospital in Waterloo.

The Princess of Wales cut the ribbon at the state-of-the-art facility, expected to treat 2,300 extra kids each year, on Tuesday, December 5.

Gubby Ayida, Chief Executive of Evelina London, said: “We were thrilled to be joined by our Royal Patron, The Princess of Wales, to officially open our Children’s Day Surgery Unit.

“We put children, young people and families at the heart of everything we do, and you especially feel that when coming into our new unit.”

The Children’s Day Surgery Unit has two operating theatres and will allow pre-surgery checks, operations, and recoveries to take place in the same building.

The decor is space-themed, inspired by the designs of a nine-year-old Ella Moth, who won a competition run by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust.

She designed an astronaut school which now features in the main entrance of the unit, inspired by her father, Piers, who was treated for brain cancer at Guy's Hospital before he died in 2021.

Chloe, from Eltham in South East London, was the first patient to be treated in the new unit when she had her tonsils and adenoids removed.

She and Ella joined the Princess of Wales in cutting the ribbon at the door of the new unit.

Another special patient in attendance was nine-year-old Tony Hudgell, who has received specialist and life-saving treatment

at Evelina London since he was a baby.

Tony has been a generous supporter of Evelina London Children’s Charity through his fundraising efforts, and donated £500,000 to the new Children’s Day Surgery

Brigade arrived.

London Fire Brigade’s 999 control officers gave vital fire survival guidance to a member of the public for firefighters arrived.

Crews from the Peckham, Brixton and Old Kent Road fire stations battled the flames for over an hour.

The fire had been brought under control by 9.18am. Part of a five-roomed flat on the second floor was damaged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews were called to the incident at 7.56am on Tuesday, December 5, where they rescued the group from a block of flats.

Cyclist killed on Old Kent Road

By Herbie Russell a CyCliSt has been killed on the old kent road after reports of a collision involving a lorry.

Police and ambulance workers were called to the scene, outside Currys, at 6.36pm on Tuesday, December 5.

The cyclist, a man, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are working to inform his next of kin.

Local roads were closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.

There have been no arrests and police enquiries are ongoing.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called at 18:36hrs on Tuesday, 5 December to Old Kent Road, SE15 following reports of a collision involving a lorry and a cyclist.

“Officers, London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended.

"The cyclist, a man - no further details, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are working to inform his next of kin. Local roads are closed while emergency services deal [sic] There have been no arrests. Enquiries continue.”

Pedalling a bike from local cargo bike company Pedal Me, he'll spread

Christmas cheer across the Sceaux Gardens, d'Eynsford Estate, Elmington and Lettsom estates.

Benjamin Knowles said: “As a Southwark resident, I'm really excited to be involved in bringing a little bit of joy to communities in the area, including on my own Lettsom Estate.

"At Pedal Me we're all about helping communities - providing better employment replacement for van driving and helping clean air by helping

businesses convert away from making van trips. Merry Christmas all!”

On his way around, Benjamin will encourage people to visit the Camberwell Community Xmas event on Camberwell Green.

By Herbie Russell an inFluential theatre industry figure has fuelled calls for the next national theatre boss to be a woman.

In an interview with The Times, Vicky Featherstone, artistic director at the Royal Court Theatre, reportedly said it was “time there is another sort of view at the National”.

Her comments come after Rufus Norris, current Artistic Director at the National Theatre, announced he’d step down in 2025.

Vicky Featherstone reportedly said: “As far as I am aware we [women] have been around the same amount of time as men.”

She reportedly added: “Of course it is time there is another sort of view at the National.”

People are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the artistic director which could be made before Christmas.

Featherstone isn’t the only person whose comments have highlighted the National Theatre’s historic, predominantly male leadership.

In October, Clint Dyer, deputy artistic director at the National Theatre told The Standard Theatre Podcast: “I feel the best person should get the job. I’m always going to kind of sit on that side. Now if you ask me, ‘Do I think the best person for the job is a woman?’ I’d say ‘Yes’.”

Several people are thought to be in contention but Indhu Rubasingham, who this year announced she’d leave London’s Kiln Theatre after a decade, is considered a frontrunner.

Other contenders may include Josie Rourke, who ran the Donmar Warehouse and Bush Theatre, Lynette Linton, who led the Bush and Erica Whyman, formerly interim artistic director at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

By Herbie Russell SoutHWark CounCil is set to establish cycling ‘Mobility Hubs’ across the borough to encourage residents to get on their bikes.

The hubs could house a range of services; including maintenance zones, cargo bikes, rental cycle options and rest areas.

It’s one of a range of measures the council is considering, and asking residents to feedback on, as part of its Cycling Plan.

In its plan, which is a draft version, Southwark Council says cycling will be

“the default choice for all trips” by 2030.

The council also says it will ensure cycling parking is better provided and designed to avoid blocking pedestrians.

Planning policy could also be updated so developers are forced to provide cycle parking commensurate with the number of plats being built.

The council also hopes to “reduce cost barriers to cycling” by including locks, lights and equipment in cycling affordability schemes.

Perhaps controversially, Southwark Council says it will “continue to support the trial of e-bikes and e-scooters” which some say are a nuisance for pedestrians

and the disabled.

Cycling in Southwark currently makes up 7 per cent of the transport mode share in the borough.

The borough already has a 35km cycle network and traffic reduction schemes aiming to make residential neighbourhoods safer to walk and cycle around.

Southwark Council also provides cycle training for anyone who attends it schools, lives or works in the borough.

a deVeloPMent that transformed a viaduct’s underbelly into a network of retail streets, galleries and offices has won an architectural award.

Borough Yards, next to Borough Market and designed by SPPARC architects, was named Architects’ Journal’s best ‘Mixed-use Project’ of 2023.

Judges for the competition liked how the project “remade the grain” of the city by drawing on medieval plans to design the new routes.

“It’s stitched-in really well to Borough Market,” said one. “It has unblocked a constipated site, unlocking something that previously did not exist,” commented another.

“To do all that, working around

Network Rail, is very impressive.”

Completed in 2021, the £300 million development includes 8,500sqm of existing railway arches, which were repurposed to accommodate retail units.

The project saw the complete redevelopment of former winetasting venue Vinopolis.

Neighbouring sites fronting the pedestrian paths linking Tate Modern with Borough Market, London Bridge station and The Shard were also redeveloped.

Several disused arches situated beneath an existing railway viaduct have been transformed into an arcade that leads south from Clink Street.

The architects also retained the facades of several former warehouses, which are incorporated into two new six-storey office buildings operated

by The Office Group.

By Herbie Russell CallS arE growing for Southwark Council to repair estates’ security doors amid warnings of people smoking crack in stairwells and risks to women’s safety.

Southwark Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain has urged the council to review the security door situation across the borough.

He claimed estate residents were sometimes waiting weeks for estate doors replaced - prompting “undesirable people” to “take advantage of the lack of security”.

Cllr Chamberlain’s comments come three months after an assailant chased a woman through a Bermondsey block, which doesn’t have a security door.

Cllr Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said: “We are currently developing a new asset management strategy, in consultation with residents, to be brought forward in the New Year.

"This will set out our investment plan and full programmes of work for all our council homes, with fire and building safety as a first priority.

“We are aware of the broken security doors at Prospect, Vaughan and Bradley House. Jobs have been raised for each of these blocks and will be attended to shortly.”

Speaking at Council Assembly on November 22, Cllr Victor Chamberlain said: “In September, I raised the case of a woman who was being chased home by a man into her block because the council had not responded to a tenant’s request for a security door on that block in South Bermondsey.

He added: “How can residents have any confidence that this council is taking this issue seriously and putting their safety at risk when they’re not responding to requests for secure doors?

"Will you commit to an urgent review of all the estates requesting repairs and door entry systems?”

The resident he was referring to was Grace Power, an economist who lives

in South Bermondsey and suffered the terrifying ordeal while walking back from The Blue last summer.

She told the News: “I noticed this man behind me because he was quite near about a metre away.

“I thought I might get mugged… as I was approaching my block of flats he asked to see my eye colour and reached out to stroke my face.

“I walked into the block of flats but then realised he could just get in so I just ran!”

Despite her requests for a security door, Grace says the council has not obliged and her block remains open to intruders.

Grace said: “We have [people smoking] crack cocaine in our stairwell and it stinks… it’s not nice to see.”

people feel better and make people feel safer as well.”

The problem has become so severe that Cllr Tester raised it at Council Assembly on November 22.

The Liberal Democrat councillor told the Assembly the parts of the area were "an absolute eyesore and used for all sorts of nefarious purposes like public urination and fly-tipping”.

In response, Labour Council Leader Kieron Williams said landlords had struggled during the pandemic but they and the council were doing “intensive work” to improve arches.

“I think it’s fair to say when Arch Co took over those arches they promised to do various bits of work with us,” he said.

“Like many other landlords, they then got hit by the pandemic… now we are on the other side of that we are doing intensive work to look at... how they can bring up the quality of the arches that they own.”

While The Arch Company does own many of the arches along the Beer Mile, they’re not the only party responsible for maintaining the area.

According to The Arch Company, Network Rail is the “principal organisation” responsible for maintaining the tunnels and viaducts along the route.

Southwark Council, meanwhile, is responsible for ensuring fly-tipping and littering is tackled.

Councillor suggests 'sprucing up' Bermondsey Beer Mile in bid to deter public urination and fly-tipping

“nEFariouS aCtivitiES” like “public urination and fly-tipping” along the Bermondsey Beer Mile must be tackled, a Southwark councillor has warned.

North Bermondsey Councillor Emily Tester has urged Southwark Council, The Arch Company and Network Rail to “spruce up” the popular drinking spot to deter people from ruining it.

She said the area's unattractive appearance - including viaducts with weeds growing out of them and flaking paint jobs - was encouraging anti-social behaviour.

The Arch Company, the only organisation to respond, said it was working to “minimise antisocial behaviour and make the Bermondsey Mile a great place to live, work and visit”.

The Bermondsey Beer Mile is a stretch of railway arches and viaducts featuring a string of craft brewer pubs.

While it’s been praised for boosting the local economy, councillors say local residents often complain about drinkers urinating in public and generally causing a nuisance.

Cllr Tester said the answer may lie in making the area more attractive and that it needed a "jet wash, sprucing up and a fresh lick of paint".

She added: "When places are looking nice it makes people treat them better. If you see litter that’s been dropped you're more likely to drop litter and the same goes for fly-tipping.

"So we know nice, welcoming places make

home to around 30 eating and drinking establishments, which has remained broadly the same since we acquired the estate in 2019.

“We work closely with those establishments, Southwark Council, local residents, the police and Network Rail to try to minimise antisocial behaviour and make the Bermondsey Mile a great place to live, work and visit.”

The Arch Company has already revitalised many railway arches spaces in the borough including through a £1.5million investment at Crucifix Lane, a £600,000 investment at Druid Street and a £4.2 million investment at Raymouth Road.

Network Rail was approached for comment.

The Walworth Community Pub group has been searching for permanent premises to house their dream drinking hole - a pub owned and run by the community - for several years.

That search is ongoing so, in the meantime, the group organised a get-together at The Huntsman and Hounds, Walworth, on Thursday, November 30.

A night of music, poetry and beers, it was a reminder that the community’s dream of establishing a new boozer is alive and well.

Matthew Meynell, co-founder of the Walworth Community Pub Group said: “It went down really. There was cracking energy and it really gave me hope that we can one day have a pub where things happen, where people get together to spontaneously do fun things.”

On the night, there was folk music from the Morgan Rattler and a reading by local poet Blod Jones.

Matthew and local pianist Tyrone Landau also played together, leading the pub in a rendition of the adapted ballad ‘We are the Walworth Boys and Girls’.

Food was supplied by local charity The Walworth Living Room while Christmas hits were played on the ukulele, guitar and trumpet.

In recent years, the group has raised £15,000, some of which has already been used to consult with locals on what they want the new pub to be like.

This fundraising will also help the organisation put together a share offer, allowing local people to own a stake in the pub. Shares could potentially be sold for as little as £100.

Walworth locals breathed a sigh of relief last summer after local pub The Beehive avoided a conversion.

Southwark Council prevented its landlord from turning it into flats in June 2023, just as it did in January 2022.

A furious estate resident claimed the quality of the works were unsatisfactory at Southwark Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting on November 29.

She claimed contractors were seen smoking on the scaffolding and had left the estate “filled with cigarettes”.

A Southwark councillor admitted there had been “serious failings”, while the interim director for housing vowed that "officers involved in these failings will be held to account”.

In 2020, Southwark Council awarded Equans Ltd a £5.9 million contract to refurbish the Devon Mansions estate by London Bridge.

But according to Cllr Emily Hickson, the costs rose to over £10 million. She said: “This is a huge increase in costs and suggests something has gone seriously wrong in the management of the project by the council."

"We believe there have been serious failings deserving proper scrutiny," she said.

The contract was also extended for 102 weeks and given a new forecasted

completion date of October 20, 2023.

A Devon Mansions resident, who gave her name as Ina, told councillors: “Southwark has handed a completely blank cheque to its contractors and also to its consultants.

“There are two years’ delay [sic]… so we have been in almost like a prison of scaffolding for almost three years.”

Ina also claimed the new concrete slabs had already been broken, glass bricks were replaced with cheap alternatives and “hundreds” of 14cmdeep holes had been left all over the estate.

The resident also said contractors were seen smoking on the scaffolding and had left the estate “filled with cigarettes”.

“On top of the building and in the basement - everywhere is full of cigarettes,” she said.

The interim housing director said the council had “commenced disciplinary investigations into some council officers” involved in the works, and staff had been suspended.

Southwark Council has also commissioned investigations by internal auditor BDO and external auditor Grant Thornton to look into the case The interim housing director said: “It may be that we need to undertake some fraud investigations in this space.”

The Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting saw councillors and residents discuss the terms of certain contracts.

Detectives investigating a robbery at Peckham Rye Station have released a CCTV image appeal.

At around 3.20pm on Tuesday, November 14, a man allegedly approached a victim on Platform 2 at the station.

The man reportedly told the victim to give up their designer jacket and then threatened him with a knife.

The victim handed over their jacket and the man left the station towards Rye Lane.

Officers would like to track down the man pictured who may have information that could help their investigation.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Detectives have today released a CCTV image in

connection with a robbery at Peckham Rye station.

“The incident happened on platform 2 at around 3.20pm on Tuesday 14 November.

“The man told the victim to give him their designer jacket and then threatened them with a knife.

“The victim handed over their jacket and the man left the station towards Rye Lane.

“Officers would like to speak to the man in the image who they believe may have information that could help their investigation.”

'Why were there no alarm bells?'

Liberal Democrat leader Victor Chamberlain project. Devon Mansions resident Ina claimed their fee was 3.99 per cent of £5 million.

Ina claimed this increased to 4.49 per cent of £9.8 million as the project progressed and was overran.

Southwark Council has not confirmed this but did not dispute it at the meeting.

Instead, Southwark Council’s interim housing director, who was not in post when contracts were signed, admitted: “The idea of having [a] percentage fee for a contractor in this space is very unusual.”

Describing such an agreement as “perverse”, he said: “That’s an incentive for costs to run away with themselves”.

Victor Chamberlain, Leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats, asked “why there were no alarm bells” when project costs started increasing.

Cllr Chamberlain said: “Why was the cabinet member not looking into the

facts at the time?

“They could see then there was huge inflation on scaffolding costs. Why were there no alarm bells?”

The interim housing director said there was a sense of “déjà vu” - referring to failings in the major works on the Canada Water Estate, revealed by this paper in September.

On that Rotherhithe estate, residents branded the works “a comedy sketch” after it went £1.7 million over budget and seventeen months over schedule.

Southwark Council was approached for further comment.

Police appeal after alleged sexual assault on south London bus

Police investigating an alleged sexual assault on a south London bus have asked the public to help identify a man.

Detectives say a woman was harassed and grabbed by a man on the 432 bus, which goes through Brixton, Tulse Hill and West Norwood on Thursday, September 14.

PC Charlotte Joseph said: “I would urge anyone who believes they recognise the man in the image to come forward.”

Between 7am and 8am on September 14, a woman was travelling on the 432 when a man boarded and sat beside her.

The man is alleged to have made several inappropriate comments towards the woman before touching her thigh.

PC Joseph said: “This was a really frightening and intimidating experience for the victim, which has left her nervous to travel.

“The suspect thought it was fine

Police would like to speak with this man in connection with investigation to harass, and grab a woman who was simply going about her day. It is absolutely not acceptable that any woman should have to deal with this type of behaviour and we are working hard to identify the man responsible.”

BErMonDSEy CounCillorS are fighting a landlord’s plans to get rid of a “much-loved” cinema.

Landlord Oval Real Estate has submitted plans to turn 10 Bermondsey Square, formerly home to Kino Cinema, into a shop, restaurant or sports facility.

But councillors say local residents are “desperate” for it to remain a cultural venue.

They have pointed out that the Bermondsey Square development only got planning permission in 2005 on the condition that the unit would remain a "cinema and arts club / exhibition space”.

In a letter to Southwark Council’s planning department, Cllr Sunil Chopra, Cllr Sam Dalton and Cllr Emily Hickson wrote: “Local residents are desperate for this space to continue as a cultural hub which provides great public benefits.”

“There is no lesser need now for this cultural hub, at a time when community centres, youth activities and many other forms of collective spaces have been rapidly decreasing in number,” the letter added.

But in documents submitted to Southwark Council, Oval Real Estate has suggested a cinema isn’t financially viable.

suitability for a continued cinema use on the site”.

It also claimed council officers had noted that it was “unlikely” that another cinema would want to occupy the space given it only has “sufficient space for a single screen”.

But Cllr Dalton said: “We as councillors want there to be a cultural and public benefit. We’re quite broadminded about what it could be. It doesn’t have to be a cinema.”

The councillors have suggested it could become a venue similar to Morocco Bound - a nearby bookshop and community hub hosting jazz nights,

poetry readings, book clubs and more.

Kino closed in January 2023 after failing to reach an agreement with Oval Real Estate over a reduction in rent costs.

The cinema claimed Oval Real Estate had increased rent “substantially” understood to be a fourteen per cent rise - and upped service charge rates.

But Oval Real Estate argued it had already given Kino two rental concession periods and that service charge increases were “marginal”.

According to the Labour councillors, service charge payments had reached an annual total of £86,000 but Oval Real Estate has not confirmed this.

Dominic Delargy, a local podcaster who used to put movies on at Kino, said Oval Real Estate should “take the financial hit” and allow it to remain a cultural space.

“I think it’s very cynical,” he said. “They [Oval Real Estate] could… make it a decent functioning arts venue for local residents and workers and they could be subsidising it by charging a lower rent but they’re charging a commercial rent.”

When the cinema first opened in 2009 it was called Shortwave Cinema before changing hands and becoming Kino in 2017.

Oval Real Estate was approached for comment.

Police were called to Commercial Way and Peckham Park Road at 7.26am on Saturday, December 2.

Officers found a 23-year-old man suffering with stab injuries who was taken to hospital.

His condition is not lifethreatening.

Numerous crime scenes were put in place. There have been no arrests at this stage.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called by LAS at 07:26hrs on Saturday, 2 December to Commercial Way/ Peckham Park Road following a stabbing.

“Officers responded. A 23-yearold man was found with stab injuries and was taken to hospital.

“His condition is not lifethreatening. At this stage there have been no arrests. A number of crime scenes are in place.”

18-storey office block gets green light as government inspector overrules Council

An eighteen-storey office block in Elephant and Castle has been given planning permission - one year after Southwark Council tried to block it.

Councillors refused Lendlease’s planning application in October 2022, deeming the building excessively tall and “bulky”.

But Lendlease appealed against that decision and, on Thursday, November 30, a government planning inspector officially overturned Southwark Council’s ruling.

Consequently, Lendlease has permission to build a 48,750sqm office block - the ‘last piece of the jigsaw’ on Elephant Park.

Local campaigners are understood to be disappointed by the decision. They had argued that, given Elephant Park is on the site of the demolished Heygate Estate, affordable housing would have been more suitable than offices.

In October last year, councillors on Southwark’s planning committee rejected the planning application because of its "excessive height, massing

and bulk”.

Cllr Kath Whittam felt it was so big she compared it to “Ayer’s Rock”, an 863-metre-tall sandstone monolith in the Australian outback.

But the planning inspector disagreed, writing in his decision notice: “It would not appear as a building that is too tall, or too big – it would appear as a building that has a contrasting form to the buildings around it.

“It would be different, obviously, but in a way that would be pleasing.”

At the inquiry, campaigners argued that given affordable housing was demolished to make way for Elephant Park, new affordable housing would be preferable to offices.

But the inspector said campaigners’ arguments hinged on a London Plan Policy H8 - a policy that wasn’t in place when the Elephant Park scheme was approved in 2013.

The inspector said: “There is no policy basis, therefore, for a conclusion that housing and affordable housing would be a better use for the site.”

He also noted that both the Southwark Plan and London Plan said the site was a suitable place for offices.

Southwark Council, Lendlease and local campaigners all gave evidence at the planning inquiry, which lasted from September 12 to September 22.

Designed by architects ACME, the office building is the last piece of Lendlease's £2.5billion Elephant Park regeneration project and will provide workspace for up to 4,000 people.

Following its victory at the inquiry, a spokesperson for Lendlease said: A spokesperson for Lendlease said: “On a project that is delivering over 3,000 new homes in central London, this building will complement the emerging town centre development and help local independent businesses to thrive, as well as provide a new community health hub.

“With workspace for up to 4,000 people, it will drive footfall to the retailers, firstrate leisure amenities and world-class education in the surrounding area; and we know it will be a significant draw for businesses seeking space for their teams in a zone one location.”

Southwark Council was asked if it would challenge the inspector’s decision but it did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication.

The council announced the contract with APCOA Parking Ltd to help enforce parking permit rules on residents - back when it was committed to a boroughwide CPZ in July.

Borough-wide CPZ coverage would have meant Southwark drivers paying up to £300 for parking permits - seen by the council as a way of reducing car ownership and improving air quality.

But four months later, following vocal local outcry, including the threat of a legal challenge, Southwark Council decided to slash the number of CPZ areas planned.

However, the council is still set to pay the full £11.5 million figure over four years - including £4.4 million this year branded an “appalling waste of money” by campaigners.

Cllr James McAsh, Southwark's Cabinet Member for Streets, said the extension of the APCOA parking contract was "unrelated to the initial plans for a borough-wide CPZ rollout".

However, the council report published when the contract extension was agreed explicitly said additional traffic wardens were needed "to provide the capacity to enforce the controlled parking zones that are to be implemented by August 2024".

Just two months before that report, Cllr McAsh stated the council aimed to implement CPZs with "100 per cent coverage by August 2024".

Corin Burr, a spokesperson for CPZskeptic campaign group ‘Oppose the CPZ’, addressed councillors at Council Assembly on Wednesday, November 22. He said it looked like Southwark had “irresponsibly signed” the contract “under the assumption that these [CPZ]

areas were already secured”.

Mr Burr added: “Therefore, residents deserve an explanation for this appalling waste of public money.”

Southwark Council has not said exactly when the contract with APCOA Parking UK Ltd was signed. But a council report said the 48 new traffic wardens would be provided from September 1, 2023 - two months before it dropped its boroughwide CPZ plans.

The £11.5 million spend includes £1.89 million on ANPR cameras and £9.86 million on 48 traffic wardens from September 2023 to May 20267.

Southwark Council had originally been set to roll out CPZs across the entire borough and has recently consulted on schemes in Dulwich Hill, Dulwich Wood, Dulwich Village, Nunhead and Queen’s Road. But it has now scrapped plans for any CPZs in Dulwich Hill and Dulwich Wood. It will soon consult on CPZ zones within Queen’s Road, Nunhead and Dulwich Village - albeit smaller within those areas that aren’t expected to cover the entire wards.

Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, Clean Air and Streets, said: “It is inaccurate to claim we have misused public funds in any way. We are dedicated to improving road safety and easing congestion across the borough.

As demonstrated recently, are willing to take on challenge and work with the community to bring about meaningful change.

“The extension of the APCOA parking contract is unrelated to the initial plans for a borough-wide CPZ rollout.

Instead, the contract supports existing measures to improve road safety, including additional ANPR cameras to enforce against drivers who choose to use bus lanes illegally. Additionally, we have plans to increase the number of wardens deployed outside schools to keep children safe and to help deter and enforce against dangerous driving.

Station Master’s House is now ready to take on a new lease of life as home to a cafe or another small business.

The refurbishment includes new timber sash windows, a new entrance matching the door and panels on the station platform, and retention of the original chimney stack.

The Railway Heritage Trust contributed £44,000 which enabled the design of the new windows, doors, flooring and external repairs.

The building was first designed between 1864 and 1866 but was damaged by fire in 1980.

While most of the station building was restored, including the Phoenix pub, Station Master’s house remained empty and on Historic England’s

‘Heritage at Risk’ Register.

Its refurbishment forms part of Project 1000, The Arch Company’s £200 million plan to bring a thousand empty and derelict spaces into use by 2030.

In May, Denmark Hill was crowned the UK’s second best station, narrowly losing to Wemyss Bay in Scotland.

Southwark Southwark Council has been urged to justify spending £11.5 million on traffic wardens and cameras to oversee Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) that it’s now partially scrapped.

By Robert Firth Local Democracy Reporter Pest control are dealing with the most bed bug incidents in three years in Southwark - but the council insists the problem isn’t getting worse. Workers at Southwark Council were called out to 629 cases involving the blood sucking insects in 2022/23 – a 40 per cent increase in incidents compared to 2020/21.

A Freedom of Information request revealed the council attended 515 jobs involving bed bugs in 2021/22 and 373 in 2020/21. The council was unable to provide data on call outs prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Councillor James McAsh, cabinet member for streets, said the surge in cases was down to officers attending

fewer properties to deal with incidents between 2020 and 2021 due to lockdown restrictions. He said: “As restrictions eased, our officers resumed property visits, resulting in an increase in the number of visits. Service levels are now back to normal.”

But figures obtained by the Local Democracy Reporting Service [LDRS] show that a neighbouring borough has seen the number of bed bug cases it deals with fall since lockdown restrictions were eased. In Lambeth, pest control dealt with over 18 per cent fewer cases of bed bugs this year than in 2020/21.

Workers were called out to 280 incidents in 2022/23, compared to 294 in 2021/22 and 344 in 2020/21. In the last five-year period, bed bug incidents in the borough peaked in 2019/20 when workers were called out to 412

cases involving the insects.

The council said bed bug cases had been falling for the past four years, but added that there had been a slight recent increase in calls about the insects due to the increased spotlight on the issue.

A Lambeth Council spokesperson said: “Our pest control teams can provide expert advice on preventing bed bugs and, where required, visit homes to treat affected rooms.”

In Lewisham, pest control dealt with 205 cases involving bed bugs in 2022/23, around the same number w incidents workers attended before the pandemic. Figures show that in 2018/19 there were 210 requests for bed bug treatments and 205 in 2019/20. Lewisham Council did not respond to a request for comment on the issue.

Victorian Denmark Hill Station building beautifully restored

By Herbie Russell Denmark Hill Station’s 150-year-old Station Master’s House has been lovingly restored having lain derelict since the 1980s.

The Grade-II listed building, designed by architect Charles Henry Driver, who masterminded many of South London’s iconic railway buildings, got a £320,000 revamp thanks to The Arch Company.

Lord Parkinson, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Arts and Heritage, visited the site saying: “The railway is an intrinsic part of our national heritage — and one which millions of people use every day.

New una marson library on Aylesbury site opens

It replaces East Street Library, which was just 400m away on Old Kent Road and closed on November 11.

The official launch celebration is set for January 2024 and will feature performances from local poets and authors - but people can visit it from now.

Named after Una Marson, a treasured Southwark heroine hailed for her contributions to the literary world and as the first Black woman programme maker at the BBC, the library’s name was selected by the local community to honour Southwark’s rich cultural heritage.

The new library will provide traditional services such as book and DVD loans, newspapers and periodicals, public access PCs, printing and copying facilities, bookable meeting rooms, study spaces, free Wi-Fi and a self-service health kiosk.

In addition, a full programme of engaging events will offered throughout the year.

The library also includes an innovation space, which provides the opportunity to trial new programmes and services.

Despite the national trends of public funding cuts and library closures, Southwark Council claimed it remains committed to investing in library services.

In July, Kingswood Library in Dulwich opened to the community, and earlier in the year, Peckham Library underwent a £2 million retrofit.

Three people escape fire in Peckham conversion

By Herbie Russell Three people have escaped a fire in Peckham that damaged a four-storey flat conversion.

arrived in the UK in 1932 where she was helped by Dr Harold Moody, another of Southwark’s great Black activists, who offered her a room at his family home on the Queen’s Road in Peckham.

It was during the Second World War that Una became the BBC’s first Black programme maker. She broadcasted messages from servicemen and women in England, to their friends and families in the Caribbean, in her popular weekly series: Calling the West Indies.

In 2009 a Blue Plaque was unveiled at

1.30pm.

She entered the lift and was joined by three women with a child’s buggy.

She then left the lift and walked towards the eastbound platform.

While waiting, one of the women from the lift allegedly assaulted her.

Police say the victim was then “pulled to the floor” and assaulted again by a second woman from the lift.

All three females from the lift then left the station via a westbound train.

The victim was left with injuries that were treated in hospital.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Do you recognise these women? British Transport Police have issued CCTV images following an assault at Bermondsey Underground Station.

"The incident took place on Sunday 27 August at around 1.30pm.

"It was reported that the 16-yearold victim entered the station on Jamaica Road and walked towards the lift. While in the lift, she was joined by three women with a child’s buggy.

"On leaving the lift, the victim walked towards the eastbound platform and whilst waiting she was approached by one of the females from the lift and was assaulted.

"The victim was then pulled to the floor and was assaulted again by a second woman from the lift. All three females then made their way to the westbound platform and left the station onboard a train.

"The victim was left with injuries that were treated at hospital."

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to the property on Asylum Road shortly after 11pm on Wednesday, November 29.

The LFB had extinguished the fire by 12.16am on Thursday, November 30.

Crews from New Cross, Peckham, Old Kent Road and Deptford fire stations attended the scene.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

An LFB spokesperson said: "Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled a fire on Asylum Road in Peckham.

"Part of a flat, in a four-storey house converted into flats, was damaged by fire. Three people left the property before firefighters arrived.

"The Brigade was called at 2311 and the fire was extinguished by 0016. Crews from New Cross, Peckham, Old Kent Road and Deptford fire stations attended the scene.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."

Police are searching for a prison absconder with links to Southwark and have appealed for the public’s help.

Mark Powell, 36, was granted temporary leave from HMP Springhill, Buckinghamshire, but failed to return on Friday, November 24.

He is black, around 6ft tall, of medium build, and was wearing a black puffer jacket and a black cap.

Thames Valley Police said he is known to frequent Southwark.

former City Hall set for landmark revamp

By Herbie Russell The London mayor’s former City Hall headquarters is set for a landmark revamp - bringing shops and restaurants to the ground floor.

Owners St Martins Property Investments Ltd said the transformation would ensure it remains a “highly sought-after destination”.

The building is currently vacant after Mayor Sadiq Khan relocated the Greater London Assembly’s (GLA) offices to Newham in March 2022.

According to a statement released by St

Martin’s, a Kuwaiti investment firm that bought the iconic building in 2013, it’s proposing a range of changes.

This includes bringing spaces for cafes, shops and restaurants to the ground floor and replacing “outdated extensive glazing”.

A concept design shows the building looking quite different - with the exterior glass shell removed exposing the building’s levels.

In 2021, architectural heritage charity The Twentieth Century Society (C20) named the former City Hall as the second most endangered building in England.

However, St Martin’s stated its proposals

“seek to maximise the retention of the building’s structure”.

City Hall was built in 2002, and designed by architect Norman Foster, costing £43 million, before being leased to the GLA. Distinctive for its neo-futuristic style, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson described it as the ‘glass gonad’.

However, after roughly twenty years on the site, Mayor Sadiq Khan relocated the GLA to The Crystal building in Newham’s Royal Docks.

He said City Hall’s rent, then forecasted to rise to £9.6 million in 2021, was too expensive.

Society would be reviewing any future plans.

He added: "As a purpose-built home for London’s democracy and a landmark of the new Millennium, any plans for Foster + Partners City Hall deserve close scrutiny.

"Finding a new use for the building is to be welcomed, yet the Society contends that sympathetic adaptions are still achievable within a building of such significant architectural and heritage value."

Two exhibitions have been planned for December 7 and December 9 at Hay's Galleria where people can give their feedback on the proposals.

A local dog-walking business has suffered a ‘dent in morale’

By Herbie Russell A ‘mean-spirited’ saboteur is puncturing cyclists’ tyres by leaving thumbtacks in a Bermondsey cycle lane.

Furious cyclists say they are constantly falling foul of the handfuls of pins left in the segregated cycle route outside Bermondsey Underground Station.

Local police say they will “keep an eye

out” for the unknown individual - who has reportedly waged the bizarre campaign for two years.

A local dog-walking business owner, who uses cargo bikes to transport her pooches, said the regular punctures were “a dent in morale” for the business.

Lydia Maxwell, founder of Dogboxx, said: “Whoever it is has clearly stepped up their game because we’ve seen it happen ten or fifteen times this year and had about three or four punctures this year.”

She added: "I’m running a small business.

Replacing my tyres definitely digs into my bottom line.

“But it’s more of a dent in morale knowing that somebody out there wants to hurt you.”

The handfuls of pins are usually left strewn on the Jamaica Road cycle lane that opened in 2020.

While a boon to cyclists, it has been criticised by some motorists who say it’s

worsened congestion.

Local councillor Rachel Bentley, who has also fallen victim to the pins, said the impact on cyclists and local businesses was unacceptable.

“Dogboxx is the cutest business on planet Earth and she’s having to spend shed loads of money on replacement tyres. It’s just mean-spirited,” she said.

Cllr Bentley took to X, formerly Twitter, to warn people about the traps. One X user wrote: “If this is the result of deliberate action, it’s truly despicable.”

In response, police wrote: “Anyone carrying out this action would be committing a criminal offence. When we are on patrol in the area we will keep an eye out.

“If anyone witnesses pins/sharp objects being dropped please call police.”

Cllr Bentley said: “The police have been quite clear. It’s not just irritating, it’s criminal damage.”

A Walworth gunrunner has been jailed for fourteen years for conspiracy to supply firearms and cocaine to his criminal clients.

Kirk Douglas, 43, was apprehended after police gained access to messages he’d sent through Encrochat - an encrypted communications network that was often used by organised crime members.

He was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday, November 30.

Between May and April 2020, Douglas was involved in a conspiracy to supply numerous firearms including Scorpion, Uzi and Mac-10 submachine guns and several types of handguns.

He also conspired with others to supply large quantities of cocaine and made £57,980 profit from his dealings.

But police started closing in on Douglas when they accessed Encrochat data in 2020.

By April 2021, they had established that the Encrochat handle ‘Lakepepper’

belonged to Douglas.

Messages he’d sent and received revealed the large amounts of drugs and firearms Douglas was dealing in.

Police executed a search warrant at his home address and found £57,980 in cash, drugs and more evidence linking him to the ‘Lakepepper’ handle.

Detective Inspector Jon Summers said: “Douglas arranged large-scale drug deals to make as much money as possible, with no thought of the misery and devastation he would cause in communities because of the violence it inevitably leads to.

“He traded and bought firearms to protect his organised crime network. This investigation has undoubtedly prevented deadly violence that would have seriously impacted communities.”

Douglas was found guilty following a two-week trial at Inner London Crown Court on September 7.

He was convicted of conspiracy to transfer prohibited weapons, conspiracy to possess a firearm without a certificate, conspiracy to supply a Class A controlled drug, amongst other offences.

Comment 'When will Labour answer for 'catastrophic failure' of housing works?

HEn tHE Council’s Housing Director describes a project as a “catastrophic failure” you know things are bad. last week they admitted to spiraling costs, having to sack workers, and allegations over fraud and assault.

Sadly this is the second time in two months council officers have had to come and apologise for how the Council is treating residents on our estates. Our Housing Department is broken but the Labour Bosses

in charge are refusing to apologise or take any responsibility.

In October, I used this column to highlight the scandal of works to the Canada Estate where the Council treated residents with complete contempt, went £1.7m over budget and repairs are 17 months late. In what feels like a case of déjà vu, last week’s scrutiny committee heard the same story again, but with a different estate – Devon Mansions right next to the Council’s offices on Tooley St! Once again, we are confronted with ballooning costs (£4million

over), delays stretching from months into 2 years, and a glaring disregard for the quality of work.

Yet again we heard how residents feel ignored, and quite simply do not trust the council.

What we have revealed is a disturbing pattern of negligence and unacceptable standards that has become synonymous with Labour's housing department.

We heard at this committee about “unusual” procurement practices, and that a full investigation would be undertaken, including looking

into the possibility of fraud.

But what we didn’t have was the political apology or accountability that we desperately need if we are to prevent this happening again.

I asked for the Labour Cabinet, including the Council Leader and our current Cabinet Member for Finance, who are the previous Housing Cabinet Members responsible for signing off these works, to explain themselves and apologise.

Shockingly Labour voted to protect themselves from accountability, and refused to accept the

recommendation. Labour are allergic to scrutiny, and will always close ranks to protect their own.

We know this is just the tip of the iceberg. Just in the last year we’ve had Kirby Estate, Canada Estate, and Devon Mansions all suffer from a fundamental lack of care. All had problems that could have been caught had the council just listened. If Southwark Labour was my landlord, I wouldn’t vote for them At the scrutiny committee, a resident gave an impassioned plea for a “change in politics in Southwark”. I can’t help but agree.

Pattern forming over major works fiasco?

t’s quickly becoming clear that Southwark Council’s major works programme on the Devon Mansions estate may have been a major fiasco. Sadly, a pattern is forming.

Southwark Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee meetings rarely pull in many viewers, especially when they clash with Champions League night as they did last month. But those who did tune in were in for a show to rival any European fixture.

We found out that the council’s refurbishment of Devon Mansions - an estate next door to Southwark’s Tooley Street headquarters - had gone roughly £4.2 million over budget and almost two years over schedule.

There were accusations of shoddy workmanship, councillors admitting their employer had presided over “serious failings” and even admissions that fraud investigations may be necessary.

Unfortunately, this is no flash in the pan. Even Southwark Council’s interim housing director - temporary beleaguered cupbearer for the poisoned chalice that is Southwark’s housing department - admitted it felt like “déjà vu”.

That’s because, only last September, the News revealed a strikingly similar situation on the Canada Estate, where the works had gone £1.7million over budget and seventeen months over schedule.

At both Devon Mansions and Canada Water, residents claim they constantly warned the council that things were going wrong. Perhaps if they’d been listened to earlier, costs wouldn’t have spiralled out of control.

We need a proper explanation for £11.5m contract

outhwark Council has insisted it didn’t count its chickens before they hatched when it comes to controlled parking zones (CPZs). But its explanation is hard to understand.

Back in July, when Southwark Council was saying it would implement a borough-wide CPZ by August 2024, it decided to agree a contract extension worth £12.5million with APCOA Parking Ltd. Of that, £11.5million would go towards 48 new traffic wardens and new ANPR cameras. These would help “enforce the controlled parking zones that are to be implemented by August 2024”, a council report said.

Now that the council has dropped its plans for a borough-wide CPZ, campaigners are understandably asking why the council is still set to spend the full amount on new traffic wardens and cameras.

‘Oppose the CPZ’ argues that, given there will be significantly less CPZ coverage, we surely don’t need so many traffic wardens to enforce traffic regulations. But in a puzzling twist of logic, Southwark Council has said the contract is “unrelated to the initial plans for a borough-wide CPZ rollout”.

Given that £11.5million is a considerable amount for any local authority, we want to believe this is true.

We want to believe that millions haven’t gone down the drain because the council agreed to sign a contract before it was responsible to do so. Hopefully, Southwark Council can provide a more cogent explanation as to why it agreed to the contract, or clarify how it was “unrelated” to the borough-wide CPZ.

Complete with difficult family dynamics, ringlight-wielding social media sensations and the looming threat of gentrification, this South London Cinderella encourages us to think beyond our own four walls.

Struggling to keep her late father’s beloved Brixton Lane fruit and veg shop afloat, Sindi-Ella plans a party at the store to incentivise locals to try her homegrown produce. But disinterest and lack of support from her stepmother and stepsister sparks tensions, opening up the narrative to give a more democratic look at the complex dynamics of a grief-stricken blended family.

Straying away from the archetypal stock characters inherent to fairytales, Sindi-Ella's two remaining relatives are funny and likeable. Whilst sympathising with this lonely, grieving teenager, we’re urged to consider the sacrifices made by her stepmother and stepsister, from uprooting their lives in West London, to being left unexpectedly with sole responsibility of someone else’s unhappy child.

Even Charmz, well-meaning but misguided social media prodigycome-property developer is shown compassion. I am still trying to work out whether the intent behind this teen property tycoon was that I suspend

my disbelief, or Samal was in fact trying to bring an older audience up to speed on the current trajectory of a hyper-aspirational Gen Z in a world of influencer marketing.

Either way, accepting Charmz as a

symbol of the very real threats faced by the local businesses of today, we’re encouraged to consider an alternative, more optimistic outcome. If the power of social media can be harnessed in the right way, by the right self-

The show opens with Snow White (Katie Tonkinson) with her broom and looking fed up. She is the despised stepdaughter of Queen Narcissus (Spargo), who makes her scrub and clean the Ice Palace all day, every day, with a special clean today as Prince Charming of Charmington (Tom Bales) is visiting in his quest throughout the realm to find a wife.

The prince’s first meeting with the Queen leaves him horrified but his equilibrium is restored when his tainted eyes fall upon the beautiful Snow White.

The dark lining on that fluffy white cloud is that t. She promptly puts out a contract on the poor girl and dispatches the Huntsman to do the deed.

Alas, despite his job title he is far too kindly to cut out the heart of Snow White to take back as evidence of her demise. He returns to the Ice Palace with an animal’s heart but the All-Knowing Magic Mirror tells the Queen Snow White is alive while the Huntsman is locked into a ball and

chain for life, which in itself becomes a prop for comedy.

Now is the moment we have all been waiting for, when Snow White comes across the cottage in the forest where the Seven Dwarves live. And there they all are: Grumpy, Cheeky, Brainy, Windy, Dave, Snoozy and Cockney - a proper geezer! All in fine voice and all ready to help their new lodger in her battle with the evil Queen.

The whole caper is dotted with great songs that fit the narrative, with Muddles (Louise Cielecki) having the best of the old but gold jokes, and all the pieces needed for a panto jigsaw slotting nicely into place to create a very satisfying whole: we were practising our call and response lines in the first few minutes; we booed all the right people and clapped along to anything with a beat. We even sung a song that warned people not to eat the yellow snow! We were suckers for it and loved every minute of Greenwich Theatre’s Snow White.

Before the curtain went up, myself, Haydn and Nancy eagerly looked through the programme to see who’s who. It’s always nice to see a familiar face like Martin Johnston (The Huntsman) returning, and to catch up on the young stars of the future getting their first professional break; this year it is Bekah Thompson-Phiri and Jessica Murphy, both 2nd Year students at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance who will learn much from working with the experienced performers.

But then, seeing the eight cast photos and biographies telling us who is Prince Charming, Snow White and (Deearna McClean) Magic Mirror, etc., we instantly wondered who would be playing the

starting hands, it can be a valuable tool in helping small businesses stay established.

Aside from one or two mild instances of slapstick violence and audience participation, Cinderella is decidedly sparse in its use of typical panto devices. So it can only be seen as a testament to the magnetic cast, that the audience began enthusiastically offering their unsolicited advice as Charmz searched the streets of Brixton for Sindi-Ella.

From the recurring tensions caused by the uncertain fate of Ella’s Fruit and Veg to the comedy of Sindi-Ella flogging her stepmum’s designer clothes on the market, the essence of Brixton is woven throughout this heartwarming tale, giving it a feel of real authenticity.

Most notably, Cinderella touches on important issues such as gentrification and the alarming advancement of modern technology, whilst still offering the wonderful escapism we crave from a Christmas pantomime. But it is much more than that, it’s a love letter to Brixton, and a celebration of the familial love felt by the community, for the community.

human Disco Ball, we adored the Seven Dwarves, we screamed to give Muddles cuddles and oohed and ached as Snow White and Prince Charming became increasingly closer together. And, of course, we were more than pleased to hear Uncle Steve and his band were back once again.

If I had to be finicky it would be to gripe about the lack of the Baddie’s stage time.

Because the Baddie wrote this panto, and because Anthony Spargo is such a generous actor, he gave more to his fellow cast colleagues to do, saving only the best dresses and wigs for himself. Oh, yes he did…

This is a Greenwich tradition that deserves to kept up for as long as the theatre stands.

The closure will be in operation on match days only from the 15th of December 2023. This order may last for up to 18 months.

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 THE A3200 GLA ROAD (SOUTHWARK STREET, LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF STOPPING) ORDER 2023 1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Trafc Order under section 14(1) of the Road Trafc Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specied in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the order is to allow telecom repairs works to take place on the A3200 Southwark Street.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from stopping in the Parking and Disabled persons’ parking bay outside No. 115 Southwark Street.

Millwall went into the game having won eight matches out of the previous nine, and they duly made it into the top half of the league.

This run coincides with the tenure of joint-managers Alex Russell and Adam Rowland, and with one eye on the cup, they felt able to ring the changes for this match. It was an opportunity to give significant minutes to players new to the club, and also those who want to press their claims for a starting berth this weekend and the ongoing league and cup campaigns.

Seventeen-year-old Melissa Jones, who has been playing on the right wing, started at right-back after her 80-minute stint replacing the injured Millie Connell in that position the previous weekend.

After the break, Maisie Joyce came on in her usual holding midfield role, and in the 64th minute, Garwood scored her second to make it 3-0.

This gave the managers the chance to make four more substitutions, the most significant being the return of club captain Jordan Butler after she missed most of last season. Sharna Giordani came on at centre-forward and hit the bar after a brilliant run in behind her marker.

Summer James and sixteenyear-old Jess Edwards made up the substitutions, and they all performed well in the last 25 minutes, aiming to be involved at Moneyfields.

That tie is the biggest match for the Lionesses since the FA relegation in 2019, and the recovery from then has been largely achieved thanks to the academy players being given the opportunity to play first-team football. It will be a very young side which takes to the field, and they will undoubtedly benefit from the experience.

Moneyfields, who play in Portsmouth, are riding high in third place in the FA National League South West, and were outstanding against the Lionesses in a preseason friendly, scoring eight goals. They obviously start as clear favourites, but Millwall are getting closer to full strength with only three players still recovering from injury.

The match is at the Moneyfields Sports Centre at 1pm, and must be played to a finish, going to extratime and penalties if necessary.

In a game full of incident, the Lions took the lead at the end of the first half when Nisbet poked home from a wonderful cross by man of the match Brooke NortonCuffy.

But a frantic second half saw Clarke equalise from the spot while Tom Bradshaw had a late effort ruled out for offside.

Jake Cooper and George Saville were also booked, earning them both suspensions for the game against Cardiff City, while the afternoon began dramatically as news filtered around The Den that Casper De Norre was out with injury.

It was a much-needed improvement from the Lions after their damp showing against Ipswich in midweek, and they avoided defeat at The Den for the first time since Gary Rowett left his post as manager.

While the second half was full of action, the first half took a while to get going. Both teams were off the back of two defeats in a week and were careful to feel each other out before committing.

By far the best action came over on the left-hand side where the third top scorer in the league at kick-off Jack Clarke was trying his best to get around Ryan Leonard - making his first start since October - in a battle that would run and run and eventually culminate with the decisive penalty.

Away from that drama, the game was still short on goalmouth action until the 36th minute. The impressive NortonCuffy slashed a ferocious cross across the face of goal but there was no one of a Millwall persuasion to knock it home.

That was just seconds before Leonard dragged the ball forward from the halfway line and unleashed from 30 yards out, putting it just wide.

Following a big chance for Saville, Millwall's goal came just before half-time when Nisbet dispatched Norton-Cuffy's excellent cross to spark joyous scenes at The Den. Millwall would not have minded another quiet half given their recent form and defensive vulnerability. But the second half was fantastic with the crowd coming to life and both sides baring their

Leonard proved more than up for the task and was arguably unlucky to be penalised for a foul on Clarke in the box, with the winger then converting from the spot kick to make it 1-1.

"So if it's in a back three, back four or midfield, I've took to different positions and tried to perform at the best I can."

The clash against Sunderland saw Leonard locked in a fascinating battle against Clarke and the former Southend United midfielder loved every second of it.

He said: "It was good. I think we kind of set the stall out in the first 10 minutes as we had like three or four one-on-ones in the first 10 minutes and I think we were both like 'it's going to be one of those types of games.'

"And to be fair he's a very good player.

He's got 10 goals in the Championship this year from being on the wing.

We knew he was a player we had to watch out for before the game so we understood the assignment. It was a battle that I enjoyed and I back myself one v one defensively."

The Lions have been drawn to play fellow Championship side Leicester City in the third round of the famous old cup competition at The Den. If Millwall are to make it to the fourth round for the first time in three years, they will have to get past the side who currently top their division and who they play away from home next week Wednesday, December 13.

Edwards says he's aware of the impact the FA Cup has had on producing incredible memories for Millwall fans over the last 20 years and is keen to get past the Foxes, even if they would not have necessarily have been his first choice of opponents.

He told our paper: "It's not the kind of draw that everyone dreams of in the FA Cup, a team in your own division.

You'd maybe like an experience to play against the top teams.

"We obviously get to play Leicester next week so we get a bit of preview of them. Another game at The Den so an opportunity to progress.

"In terms of priority, to get good feeling around the club is a priority.

At the moment we're closer to an end of the table that we wouldn't want to be so our priority at the moment is putting points on the board in the league and that will still be the same when the Leicester cup game comes round, as it's not too far off.

"But as I said the priority is to really give the fans some football and some experiences and days that they can enjoy. And I know that's been a big part of Millwall's history so if we can recreate that then brilliant."

The Bluebirds' strong campaign has begun to show signs of slowing down with Erol Bulut's side off the back of consecutive defeats.

Just three points off the play-offs, Cardiff are still to be commended for their progress under a manager tackling English football for the first time.

Bulut is in charge of a side lacking in star names but not short on endeavour and effort.

His one star name, Aaron Ramsey, has missed the last thirteen games with injury in his first season back at his boyhood club. He had contributed three goals in his first

six matches before being sidelined.

Millwall are having to get their head around their own injury woes this week after Casper De Norre was ruled out until at least Christmas with a calf strain.

He had been arguably the club's player of the season so far and head coach Joe Edwards will be praying he can get him back as soon as possible.

"I just think at the moment we've just kind of come away from that and we need to make sure we still get the balance right. And if we can do that as well as progress with the possession, I think we could be a real decent team."

He added: "Since he's come in, the lads are thoroughly enjoying it and we're trying to do what we can to work with him to get the results that we need. It's never easy coming in in the middle of the season. When you have a pre-season when you can work with things, it's very different.

"So I think it's very important that fans and players are patient. As we've

seen over the years with many top managers, a lot of them don't get things clicking straight away, it takes a while."

Hutchinson, 33, has experienced plenty during his years at The Den and, ahead of his latest milestone appearance, said the welcoming nature of Millwall made him want to dedicate years of his career to the club.

He said: "When I first joined, I came from Fulham when I didn't feel as involved as I wanted to. Then Millwall opened their arms to me and ever since, they've been welcoming and done nothing but support me the whole time I've been here. I feel like when a club does that to you, you owe a loyalty and trust to them back.

"Ever since I walked through the door I've loved every part of it. Millwall gets me and I get Millwall and I think that combination speaks volumes."

By Kiro Evans JoE EDWarDS has challenged his players to seize the moment with big first-team names set to be missing for the trip to Cardiff City.

George Saville and Jake Cooper both picked up their fifth yellow card of the season in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland last Saturday, meaning they will be suspended for the next game.

Far more worrying for fans is the calf injury picked by midfield talisman Casper De Norre, which will keep him out until at least Christmas and potentially longer. He joins Joe Bryan on the injury list.

Saville, Cooper and De Norre have been among the first names on the team-sheet in recent weeks and their absence opens the door for squad players and younger stars to try and make their mark.

Edwards told our paper: "There will

be enforced changes. When you come in somewhere new and with very little time on the training pitch with the international break and then three games last week, there's not loads you get to see at points like that.

"So now there will be enforced changes and we'll be having to dig deeper into the squad a bit - that's opportunity, that's how I see it. Of course I thought Coops did well at the weekend, Sav's been a key player for us since I came in. They are losses.

"I really like the look of what I thought Casper would be able to offer our team in the way we like to play, so again it's a loss. Like any team that loses key players, it's a blow but it's opportunity for others to come in and with a busy fixture schedule coming up, it gives everyone an opportunity to have an input."

The entertaining draw with Sunderland proved to be huge step up in performance for Millwall compared to their awful 3-1 defeat away at Ipswich Town three days earlier.

Edwards thinks the difference in the way Millwall started the game, with the Lions 2-0 down after 12 minutes at Ipswich, was key.

He said: "The start of the game was big. Obviously goals can change any game. When you go to somewhere like Ipswich and you know how freely they're scoring and you concede so early and when you concede another straight after, it can really kill the whole feel. So as much as I was critical of the players after the game for the basics, I do understand had that game at Ipswich stayed 0-0 later, it is easier to get yourself going.

"So the way we started the Sunderland game we were aggressive but Sunderland were on top in terms of the ball. But you could see that once we were compact and resolute and realised we could deal with it, then we grew in confidence. And just in general our work ethic, our compactness off the ball made us difficult to play against.

and I feel once the players got comfort from that, we grew in confidence and in general we were more difficult to break down."

A penalty by Jack Clarke saw Sunderland grab the equaliser after a brilliant, first-half team goal which saw Millwall work the ball from back to front. Edwards, who is trying to gradually introduce a more progressive style of play at The Den, was impressed.

He said: "Lenny [Ryan Leonard] came inside the pitch so we could get Brooke out in that wide area to try and get him one v one as he's a big attacking threat for us.

"And when you score goals like that, you have to give players credit for the technical execution of it as when it's not there, you get punished. We had some good crossing positions at Ipswich where the quality was poor.

And then in this instance, Brooke couldn't deliver it anymore perfectly and then that's what Nis has done for two games now, get the chance and finish."

Edwards' VAR warning EXCLUSIVE

By Kiro Evans MillWall HEaD coach Joe Edwards has revealed he would not be a fan of var in the Championship - even after seeing his side on the receiving end of a controversial penalty call.

Ryan Leonard gave away a spotkick after being judged to have fouled Jack Clarke in the closing stages of Saturday's game against Sunderland.

Clarke converted the penalty, cancelling out Kevin Nisbet's goal, and the match finished 1-1.

Replays have since shown that Leonard may have been very unlucky with the 31-year-old appearing to nick the ball in his slide tackle.

Asked if he would want the Championship to replicate the topflight and introduce video technology, former Chelsea and Everton coach Edwards told our paper: "No. I have a few years experience with it in the Premier League and now I'm working in a league without it, I prefer it without it to be honest."

He added: "The route of the ball does clearly look like it changes the line of its path, if there was VAR I would imagine that would get sent to the screen and the ref would overturn that. So we could feel slightly hard done by and it's marginal.

"But I will stand by what I said on Saturday - it's harsh and Lenny felt he got the ball but I can see why it was given, so we have to accept it."

VAR - video assistant referees has been facing a growing rebellion among fans and pundits this season after several controversial decisions in the Premier League and across European football.

While the top-flight introduced the technology in 2019, there are no plans for the EFL to follow suit in the immediate future for regular season games.
