Southwark residents struggling with the cost of living crisis this winter are being urged to take advantage of the council’s support services

Families and individuals can benefit from vouchers, warm spaces, help claiming pension credit and advice from local organisations.

All of Southwark’s libraries are open to every resident who wants to keep warm, access free Wi-Fi, or have a chat with a friendly member of staff.

Many more Warm Spaces run by the voluntary sector and TRAs with support from the council will start to pop up, with further promotion to come.

Encouraging older people to claim pension credit

Many older people are eligible for pension credit but do not claim it. Southwark Council can help those missing out.

Doing so can unlock a range of other benefits, including more money to help with living costs.

Organisations from across the borough joined efforts with the council last winter to encourage older people to claim pension credit.

This winter the council will be writing directly to eligible residents and running an awareness campaign to help promote take-up again.

Cost of Living Roadshows

People who are concerned about money and rising costs can also attend the borough’s ongoing cost of living roadshows.

These bring together a wide range of services to provide advice and support, including Southwark Council, Citizens Advice Southwark, and Age UK Southwark.

The next one will take place on 21 November 2023 at Setchell and Longfield Hall in Bermondsey (Alscot Way, SE1 5XN). There is no need to book, and it is open to all between 10am and 1pm.

By Isabel Ramirez three younG men have started a video podcast where they open up and discuss the everyday realities of growing up in Southwark.

‘Full Circle’ is a series of vlogs, hosted by three young men as they tell their stories - predominantly through the lens of the Black community.

The hosts, who did not know each other before, explore topics such as life during lockdown, education and vulnerability.

Reuben Quaye, 31, from Camberwell, is one of the hosts and explained he was keen to show that being vulnerable is a strength.

"I am a black man living with Sickle Cell Disease. This has been an opportunity to present my experiences as a disabled black man who has struggled with concepts like vulnerability," he explained.

Reuben added that vulnerability is not a common practice for men and he hopes to see that change.

Another host is Kelvin Miles, also 31, from Elephant and Castle, who said he wanted to 'rediscover' who he was.

"I wanted to use this opportunity to heal, grow and learn about other people's journeys to help provide a unique perspective on my experiences growing up."

On the experience, he said: "I've learned to really channel the emotions and thoughts I could not articulate when I was younger."

The youngest of the hosts is Luca Wood, 20, from East Dulwich, who said he got involved after Cllr Portia Mwangangye - who led the project knocked on his door.

Cllr Portia Mwangangye, the council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Young People explained her idea behind the

project: "Young people are at the sharp edge of many societal problems, so supporting their mental health has to be a priority.

“Through telling the stories that made them who they are, they prove that vulnerability is not weakness, but a sign of strength. We hope these episodes will be used by anyone wanting to open up

spaces for other young people to tell their stories and begin healing.”

Eight episodes are now available on Southwark Space, a new video platform launched by Southwark Council on YouTube to help young people speak to their peers and a wider audience.

Special guests include local community leaders, such as John James

OBE from the Sickle Cell Society and therapeutic coach Alex Holmes.

The council worked with the young people and producers Anubis Pictures to develop and film the vlogcast at The Trunk, a hireable community venue at Elephant and Castle.

By Herbie Russell Dozens of parents gathered outside Comber Grove Primary school to protest against its potential closure last week.

The Camberwell school, where pupil numbers have fallen by almost 40 per cent since 2019, will close in August if Southwark Council approves the plans.

Parents, whose children are still reeling from the disruption of the pandemic, fear the impact closure will have on their children’s education.

The proposal to close Good-rated Comber Grove comes after a flurry of primary school closures and amalgamations over the last year.

This is because schools receive funding on a per-pupil basis. So with declining birth rates and other demographic changes decimating pupil rolls, Southwark schools’ finances have been hit hard.

Mum-of-two Fatima Atac, 30, attended a meeting about the possible closure at Comber Grove on Thursday, November 16. “[The pandemic] was a nightmare because [it’s as if] they’re still living in Year 1 and Reception because that’s what they were in Covid although they’re in Year Three and Four now,” she said.

“My son’s in Year Three and he’s only started reading this year and it is quite hurtful.”

Council officers have tried to reassure parents that there are enough pupil vacancies at nearby schools to accommodate displaced children.

At the meeting, an officer said there were 840 spaces at Southwark schools within a 0.7-mile radius.

But Fatima said she’d visited four local schools and that none had enough space to accommodate both her children.

“Some were overcrowded and some had limited spaces in the year group,” she said.

Ressi Mohammed, 35, has two children in years Six and Three. She also claimed she’d been turned away from local schools.

She also said the nearest school, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, couldn’t accommodate her Muslim family’s needs.

“I’m worried because there are no schools around us. The only school around is St Joseph’s,” she said.

Other nearby schools include Brunswick Park, John Ruskin, Lyndhurst and Crawford - but Ressi, who also has a pre-nursery-age child, said this was inconvenient.

“If you’re walking to Camberwell it’s a 10-15 minute walk. By bus, you have to take 2 stops,” she said.

But desks have continued emptying at an alarming rate, leaving it with 92 vacancies in 2022 - 2023.

Brexit and the pandemic have also been blamed for declining pupil numbers.

Both, the council has previously pointed out, have caused families to move away from the borough or the UK entirely.

The housing crisis has also been blamed, with some citing Southwark Council's own regeneration policy, which has included the demolition and regeneration of the Heygate and Aylesbury estates.

Last October Makeda WilliamsPinnock, headteacher at Elephant and Castle’s Victory Primary School, said regeneration had had a “huge impact” on pupil admissions.

In the last year, St Francesca Cabrini Primary School, Honor Oak and Townsend Primary School, Walworth, have both closed due to falling

admissions.

Meanwhile, Cobourg Primary School has amalgamated with Camelot Primary School and Harris Free has amalgamated with Harris Primary Academy, Peckham both this year.

Cllr Ali has previously urged the government to change the per-pupil funding formula and provide additional funds to help schools cope with falling admissions.

The first incident took place at around 10.50pm on Tuesday, October 10, on Barrington Road, Brixton.

A woman was entering her address when a man approached her. Police said: “After a short struggle she was able to fight him off and he left the area.”

On Friday, November 17, a woman was walking along Sisters Avenue, by Clapham Common, when she noticed a man following her.

Police said: “As he got close, she

began to shout and he ran away.”

The third incident took place on Sumburgh Road, Clapham, at around 1.40am on Sunday, November 19.

The man approached the woman and grabbed her but she managed to escape.

Officers believe the incidents are linked. The suspect is described as white, between 25 and 30 years old, of slim build, with short blonde hair.

Chief Inspector Dave Lee, from South West Borough Command Unit, said: “These were extremely

frightening incidents for the women involved and we are using all of the resources at our disposal to identify the individual responsible.

“We know this will cause community concern and we will be carrying out extra patrols at key times. We would encourage anyone who believes they can help our investigation to contact us as soon as possible.”

Police have launched an appeal after three different women were followed by an assailant in Brixton and Clapham.

One woman only escaped after “a short struggle” while another was “grabbed” before she was able to get away.

StudentS at an elephant & Castle school got a visit from a woman who was an astronaut for naSa to 'empower girls' to get into science.

Ark Globe Academy welcomed Dr Peggy Whitson earlier this month to share firsthand experience of space exploration with a class of thirty students.

Dr Whitson, who holds the record for the most time spent in space by an American, spoke about life working on the International Space Station and the challenges she faced during her missions.

She welcomed questions from our budding astronauts and said: “If you want to be an astronaut you can go into any of the STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths] fields and you would be successful.

"Personal characteristics to be an astronaut that I think are important are adaptability, teamwork - being able to work well with others, and just being motivated and a positive person.”

Dr Whitson, was also the first female, nonmilitary Chief of the Astronaut Office, was joined at the school by Doug Emhoff, The Second Gentlemen of The United States (as his wife is Vice-President Kamala Harris) and Paul Bate, CEO of the UK Space Agency.

The purpose of the visit was to inspire and empower girls to pursue STEM subjects and promote interest in space exploration and science.

Mr Emhoff spoke to the students about the importance of education and pursuing their passions. He emphasised the need for more diversity in science

How did Southwark MPs vote on ‘immediate ceasefire’ in Gaza?

By Newsdesk All three of Southwark’s Labour MPs did as their party leader instructed by abstaining from a vote calling for an ‘immediate ceasefire’ in the Israel-Hamas war, with Helen Hayes coming under particular criticism.

The Dulwich and West Norwood MP chose not to vote for the Scottish National Party’s (SNP) amendment, which called for an ‘immediate ceasefire’, despite much speculation that she would.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer was set for a showdown with his own MPs in the House of Commons last Wednesday, November 15, when he ordered them to abstain on the SNP’s motion, meaning that frontbenchers must resign or face the sack to support it.

Helen Hayes, the shadow education minister, was one of three frontbenchers commentators indicated could defy their leader. The other two - shadow Home Office minister Naz Shah and shadow trade minister Afzal Khan - went ahead and voted for the SNP amendment and promptly resigned from their posts, joining six more from the shadow cabinet.

Much of the criticism Helen Hayes faces came after she spoke in a parliamentary debate following the King’s Speech and just two hours before the vote on the SNP amendment.

She said that she had heard from thousands of her constituents calling for a ceasefire, saying her conscience told her she must call for a ceasefire – yet she did not specifically say whether she was in agreement with the SNP on an ‘immediate ceasefire’.

She told the House of Commons, her constituents “want to see every possible effort being made to stop the conflict.

They understand that this is what is being signalled by the word ‘ceasefire.’ In calling for a ceasefire no-one is suggesting that

the cessation should be unilateral or that it should be without conditions.

“Hamas must release the hostages. In war ceasefires do not always hold and I think we must all be realistic about the intensity of this conflict, but a bilateral humanitarian cessation of the violence, a ceasefire, is surely the minimum we should be demanding.

“This process is not easy. Nobody is saying that this is easy, but it is what my conscience tells me is the right thing to do. Not a unilateral laying down of arms, but a bilateral humanitarian ceasefire predicated on the release of hostages and leading to an internationally brokered peace process and a two-state solution with a secure Israel living alongside a sovereign viable Palestine.

“My conscience tells me that I must call for a ceasefire today, for a halt to this dreadful destruction and conflict where far too many have already died on both sides, and more will continue to die if the violence does not cease.

“We must call for a ceasefire."

Later, in a post to X (formerly known as Twitter), the Labour MP stated: "Today I made my position absolutely clear. I support a ceasefire in Gaza."

She continued to explain the reason she abstained: "I did not vote for a divisive amendment by the SNP but I will continue to represent the views of my constituents on this issue and to call for a ceasefire now."

We asked Helen Hayes why she felt the amendment was divisive but she did not respond at the time of going to press.

Sir Keir has argued that a ceasefire would not be appropriate, because, it would freeze the conflict and embolden Hamas. Instead, Labour, like the Conservative government, the United States and the European Union, is calling for “humanitarian pauses” to help aid reach Gaza.

In total 56 Labour MPs did actually vote for the SNP motion. Ten Labour MPs have resigned from top posts, while 70 have openly called for a ceasefire, and nearly 50 councillors across the country have resigned from the party over the leadership’s position on the war.

No Southwark councillors have resigned.

After the vote Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle said he abstained on what he called an ‘oversimplified’ and ‘juvenile’ motion by the SNP because it would ‘change nothing’.

In a statement, for this newspaper he said: "Everyone wants peace in the Middle East and a resolution to the current crisis as soon as possible. But the idea that backing a minority party’s ‘motion’ in Westminster would change anything is bizarre.

"Even if every Labour MP had voted for it the result would have been the same defeat by the Government. Even if every Tory voted for it the result would be meaningless to Palestinians and Israelis alike.

“Hamas still has 239 hostages and is threatening further atrocities against Israel. I want the UK to be part of the peacebuilding operation when the hostages are all released or found and when we can influence the longer-term settlement.

“Israel will need the UK to help and Palestinians will want our expertise in conflict resolution. Voting for juvenile, over-simplifications on such a complex and difficult issue would not show any sense or understanding of this sensitive issue."

Harriet Harman MP for Camberwell and Peckham also abstained. We asked her for comment on the matter but she did not

respond.

Compared with a formal ceasefire, the call for humanitarian pauses means the conflict could be stopped for short periods of time, sometimes just a few hours.

They are implemented with the aim of providing humanitarian support only, as opposed to achieving long-term political solutions.

Last week, the US said Israel would begin to implement daily four-hour military pauses in areas of northern Gaza.

The Hamas-run health ministry says more than 11,000 people have been killed in Gaza, of whom more than 4,500 were children.

On Wednesday this week, Israel and Hamas agreed on a four-day ceasefire, along with the release of 50 women and children who are being held hostage in Gaza, and the corresponding release of 150 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli jails.

By Herbie Russell Southwark CounCil has kickstarted its campaign against graffiti with a "week-long blitz" along Peckham high Street - with more hotspots set to be targeted.

The council started work in Peckham on Monday, November 13, following its landmark policy announcement that it will start removing graffiti from private buildings free of charge.

Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, Clean Air and Streets, said: “Graffiti, not to be confused with public art, is a growing concern for residents and businesses across the borough.

“This is why we're taking decisive action F.A.A.

to eliminate these eyesores from our high streets by providing local businesses with a complimentary graffiti removal service.”

He added: “To get things started, our cleansing teams are out in Peckham this week clearing graffiti from storefronts and commercial buildings.”

Locals have recently complained that an “epidemic” of graffiti has made areas like Peckham feel “intimidating” and “run down”.

The problem has spiralled out of control in recent years - in part because private property owners either can’t afford, or aren’t willing, to pay for private graffiti removal services.

According to council data, graffiti levels have doubled since 2018, from a score of 4.96 to 10 per cent last year.

But from now on, Southwark Council will remove graffiti from privately owned buildings and infrastructure below two meters from ground level - without asking for payment.

Cllr McAsh said: “Given the ongoing cost of living emergency, we understand many businesses are struggling to keep afloat and struggle to cover clean-up costs themselves. We're here to help.”

As well as the free graffiti removal service, the council is taking further steps to combat such vandalism.

These include collaborating with police to identify vandals and seek prosecutions, use enforcement powers where property owners don’t use the council’s graffiti removal services, and promoting the use of public art murals.

By Isabel Ramirez a CloSe family friend of damilola taylor, the schoolboy who was killed 23 years ago in Peckham, is holding a memorial event in his honour.

The event will consist of a special church service and afternoon tea to remember the ten-year-old who was killed on September 27, 2000, after being stabbed to death on his way home from Peckham Library.

His family had moved over from Nigeria just four months earlier in the hope of a better life.

Monday, November 27 marks the

23rd anniversary of this tragic killing, and community activist and close friend of the Taylor family, Eula Clarke told us why it's important to keep Damilola's memory alive.

"His memory inspires us to be a catalyst for positive change," she said, "ensuring all children are protected.

"But we also must celebrate the legacy that has been left behind, like the students who are now trained to become doctors on the Extended Medical Degree at King's."

This course was introduced at King's College University to help bright and talented young people from deprived backgrounds become doctors - which could have included Damilola had he still been alive today.

In 2005, Ms Clarke held an anniversary event and raised thousands for the Damilola Taylor Trust - set up by his parents following his death to support disadvantaged youth.

She hopes this event will be as well received.

By Isabel Ramirez the CounCil says it is committed to helping anyone learn to cycle - including Southwark's deputy Mayor, who said she had 'never ridden a bike before.'

In the last few months, more than 1,800 residents have taken part in Southwark Council's free cycling lessons, which is part of their commitment to helping people find alternative ways to travel.

Now, Deputy Mayor, Cllr Naima Ali, has given them a try, marking her first time ever on a bike.

Cllr Ali said: “I never had the opportunity to learn or ride a bicycle as a child; walking was our main way of getting around.

"There was also a stigma surrounding women cycling, driven by largely conservative views. I want to break the taboos and empower and encourage other women in the community to know it’s possible.

After pedalling for the first time, Cllr Ali commented that she felt 'free and exhilarated': "At first I was scared and doubted if I could even balance while cycling but surprisingly within the first 30mins I was able to peddle and ride a bit.

"I did enjoy my first session and have booked myself onto some more - I can’t wait to see myself riding around Southwark.”

The cycling lessons are open to all and include training tailored for women and girls, families, older people and people with disabilities.

Residents can borrow a bike, whilst

over 1,800 reSidentS have taken up Southwark'S council'S free cycling leSSonS learning from qualified instructors.

They are part of the council's Streets for People initiative, which sets out plans to improve air quality, by moving away from favouring cars to free up more space for walking, cycling, and public transport.

cycle campaigners reveal Southwark's most dangerous junctions in a new map and call for changes to save lives

Southwark’S MoSt dangerous junctions have been revealed as cyclists urge the council and tfl to “stem the human cost” of “dangerous” roads.

Junctions between Elephant and Castle and London Bridge, and a host of others, were identified as “collision hotspots” in an interactive map created by the London Cycling Commission (LCC).

The LLC has urged the authorities to redesign the worst-offending roads to include segregated cycle lanes, advanced stop lines and other measures.

In Southwark alone, 168 people were fatally or seriously injured in traffic incidents in 2022, with three people tragically dying from their injuries.

LCC Chief Executive Tom Fyans said: "Behind this horrific data are hundreds of stories of families torn apart by tragedy and lives changed forever.

“Whilst cycling and indeed walking and wheeling remain relatively safe, healthy ways of getting about London, TfL, the Mayor and our boroughs must move faster and be bolder on road danger to stem the human cost posed by dangerous junctions and poor road designs.”

The most dangerous junction in Southwark was the one between Harper Road and New Kent Road, closely followed by the Gaunt StreetNewington Causeway junction.

Four of Southwark’s twenty most dangerous junctions were on Blackfriars Road, including at the junction with Union Street, which was the third most dangerous junction in the borough.

A twelve-year-old riding his bicycle was rushed to hospital with ‘possible life-changing injuries’ after a collision involving a lorry at the Union Street junction.

For pedestrians, the two most dangerous junctions were Peckham Rd-Melon Rd-Bellenden Rd-Peckham High St and Peckham Rd-Lyndhurst Way-Peckham High St. The LCC says measures that could

improve junction safety include Advanced Stop Lines for cyclists (ASLs), phased signals that give pedestrians and cyclists priority and segregated cycle lanes.

Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, Clean Air and Streets, said: “Southwark Council is committed to improving road safety in partnership with TfL who manage the busy “red route” roads like Peckham Road. Our partnership has already brought improvements at Peckham High Street including the redesign of the pedestrian crossing to enhance safety, creating wider footways and the

introduction of a 20mph limit over the winter of 2020/21. The work continues with plans to introduce a 20mph limit on the remaining parts of the TfL network in December.”

“As part of our Streets for People strategy, we are also launching a new walking and cycling consultation shortly to move forward with our plans to provide safer routes for our residents. We have also created 140 new pedestrian crossings in the last five years and provided safe cycling training to over 3,000 children and adults.”

A TfL spokesperson said: “Any death or serious injury on the roads is one

too many and we are determined to end the devastating consequences of road danger by working with London boroughs to make roads safer, including at junctions.

"We have reduced danger at 44 junctions across London as part of our Safer Junctions programme and we continue to work on designs for a significant number of further locations in collaboration with our partners in the London Boroughs, including many of those highlighted by this data.

"We welcome London Cycling Campaign's research and will be working closely with campaigners, Southwark Council and local communities across the capital on our investment in new infrastructure over the coming years."

Cllr Graham Neale, Environment Spokesperson for the Southwark Liberal Democrat Group, said: “Getting Londoners on their bikes is vital part of making this a greener, healthier city.

"But to do that, we have to make sure that people are safe when cycling and dangerous junctions are a huge barrier to achieving that. London Cycling Campaign has done great work identifying these problem areas and it is now the responsibility of the London Mayor, TfL and local councils to provide solutions.

"We have the second most dangerous junction right here in Southwark, so our Southwark Liberal Democrat group will be working with the council and TfL urgently to make it safe for cyclists.”

Man found guilty of murdering Abraham Kallon Convicted: Justice Beckford

By Herbie Russell a Man has been found guilty of murdering abraham kallon - the 24-year-old man who was discovered suffering from serious stab injuries in denmark hill.

Justice Beckford, 23, of Lambeth was convicted of murder and possession of a blade or sharply pointed article following a trial at the Old Bailey on Monday, November 13.

The Met Police said “extensive analysis of CCTV footage” and a house search had "proved vital" to the conviction.

Abraham Kallon had spent the night at a bar with a friend on Clapham High Street on Friday, December 9, 2022.

After leaving, the friends engaged in a conversation with a group of men and women.

The court heard that men in the group became hostile and one of them stabbed Abraham through an open car window.

Abraham and his friend drove to King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill, where he was discovered by officers at 4.55am on December 10, 2022.

They immediately administered first aid before arranging for Abraham to be treated by medics. Tragically, he died in hospital a short time later.

Police launched an investigation, trawling through CCTV footage from the roads around Clapham High Street.

They identified Justice Beckford and officers tracked him down to an address in Bexley where he was arrested a week

after the murder.

Detectives searched a separate address linked to Beckford in Herne Hill where they found a black jacket that matched the one he’d been wearing on the night of the murder. It had traces of Abraham’s blood on it.

Detective Sergeant Jake Good from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said: “Our thoughts remain with Abraham’s family and friends who have had to sit through a trial and listen to details of the night he was killed.

“The thorough work carried out during this investigation proved vital to linking Beckford with the scene. It was the key CCTV footage and DNA analysis of blood found on the defendant's clothes following the murder that led to the jury finding him guilty.

“Beckford now faces a lengthy prison sentence for his actions.”

The post-mortem examination gave the cause of Abraham’s death as stab injuries.

Beckford will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Thursday, November 23.

walworth cafe may have to cloSe due to 'non-Stop' conStruction workS

ownerS of a walworth cafe claim 'non-stop' road works, due to the council's plan to pedestrianise streets, are causing them to lose so much money that they may have to close.

The owners of RudeNboomin, a cafe just off Walworth Road, said the last year and a half have been a 'nightmare' as Lower-Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTN) works are affecting their ability to trade.

Esther Webb, who owns the business with her husband, told us: "We traded for two years with no problems. But in the last year and a half, it's been nonstop."

She explained that as a result of the Streets for People strategy - proposed

by Southwark Council to make streets safer by pedestrianising them Browning Street had been overrun with construction.

"The whole street is blocked off," she said. "You can't even see our cafe when you walk down, so every time work is being done we lose most of our footfall

They claim residents pushed back the council's original idea of creating a parklet on the road - due to the noise and disturbance it would cause.

As it stands, the street was already pedestrianised before the most recent works - which Esther said came with its own share of issues.

"We've had to deal with crackheads being aggressive, people [defecating] in the path," she claimed, "We even had to ask for the seats the council put in during lockdown to be removed because it was just encouraging anti-social behaviour."

But the couple said they had not expected these current works - to widen the footpath and cycle lane and plant two trees - to cause such disruption.

"We had no idea they'd be doing such major groundwork just to plant a couple of trees. Before it started, the council told us they would do everything to minimise the impact on our business," she claimed.

This current phase of construction began in October and according to Southwark Council's website, it is due to

be completed in December - but Esther says it will likely be 'too late' for the business.

"The council keep saying it will be so good for our business when it's finished," she continued, "but at this point - we won't get there.

"Short of a miracle we will have to close in the new year as we have not made enough these last two months to see us through the quiet period of December to March."

Esther added that this was the ninth lot of road closures in the last year and a half. She said things had gotten so bad that they were unable to pay themselves and lost around £1,500 in October alone.

As such, they are asking for compensation from the council, to cover the cost of the business they have lost, which they claim, are a direct result of these road works.

We approached the council for comment and asked if they would consider compensating them to cover the business they claim to have lost - but they did not respond.

By Herbie Russell a South london caretaker has been convicted of murdering a 24-year-old deptford woman, who body was never found.

Fifty-five-year-old Mark Moodie is believed he dumped Maureen Gitau's body in a wheelie bin.

Moodie, who was from Woolwich, was found guilty of murder at Woolwich Crown Court, on Thursday, November 16.

Police never located Maureen Gitau's body, despite searching for almost

20,000 hours, and say it was incinerated at a rubbish processing plant before 'officers were able to stop the waste processing process.'

Moodie will be sentenced at a later date.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn described Moodie as a “contemptible individual” who “cruelly prevented” the family from laying Maureen’s body to rest.

Much-loved Maureen was last seen on Monday, December 5, leaving her home in Deptford.

A police investigation would later

reveal that she met Moodie at Richmond House, a development in Blackheath Hill, that same evening.

The pair knew each other from when they worked as cleaners together and had stayed in touch.

Moodie also worked as a caretaker at Richmond House so had access to the storerooms there.

Police said Maureen met up with Moodie and they went into the storerooms before Moodie murdered her.

Moodie is then believed to have dumped her body in a large wheelie

refuse bin which was taken to a refuse plant three days later.

Maureen was reported missing on Saturday, December 10, and officers were able to trace her movements via phone and CCTV. Phone records showed Moodie had called Maureen before she died and CCTV captured the meeting.

Police spoke to Moodie over the phone on Wednesday, December 14, realised he was lying, and later arrested him.

CCTV also showed Moody moving a large wheelie bin around the basement

area wearing surgical gloves.

A 20,000-hour search involving 325 Licensed search officers ensued, with police picking through 2,750 tonnes of rubbish, from January 9 to February 23.

Sadly, Maureen's body was never found.

DCI Blackburn said: "My thoughts today are with Maureen's family, who have been cruelly prevented from putting a much loved daughter, sister, niece and cousin to rest.

“I am glad we have been able to bring to justice the man responsible for her death.”

'Sergeant was shot after failures in the searching of his killer'

By Herbie Russell PoliCe offiCerS failed to properly search the man who fatally shot a South london sergeant, an inquest has ruled.

A coroner concluded that Sgt Matt Ratana, who was murdered at the Croydon custody centre in 2020, was “unlawfully” killed, following an inquest at Croydon Town Hall on Monday, November 13.

Colleagues have paid tribute to the “popular” 54-year-old officer, who had also worked at Walworth Police Station, before being taken away by an “appalling act of violence”.

His killer Louis de Zoysa, 26-years-old at the time of sentencing, was handed a whole life term of imprisonment for murder in July. During the trial his legal team said he was suffering an autistic meltdown at the time of the shooting.

De Zoysa was first arrested and searched by police officers in September

2020, who found bullets in his pocket.

But they failed to find an antique firearm that he’d concealed in an underarm holster.

Hours later, while being held at the Croydon custody centre, he opened fire on Matt Ratana, killing him.

In the inquest, the coroner concluded that “there were failures in the searching and observations of Louis de Zoysa”, a Met Police statement said.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) identified learning points for two arresting police constables around the searching and transportation of trainees.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner (DAC) Stuart Cundy, said: “The arresting officers recognised that their search and observations of de Zoysa could have been more systematic, and should have found the firearm.

“Later at the police station these same officers showed great courage in disarming de Zoysa whilst he continued

to fire the gun. I admire their bravery and that of everyone who was in the custody centre that night.”

The IOPC has also recommended that the National Police Chief’s Council put handheld metal detectors in police vehicles to help with searches.

Since then, over 4,300 detectors have been deployed for officers to use in custody suites and police vehicles.

DAC Cundy, said: “My first thoughts are with Matt’s partner Su and his family. The appalling act of violence that stole Matt from them continues to have a lasting impact on all his loved ones and the large number of people whose lives he touched, both inside and outside of the Met. “At the time of his tragic murder just over three years ago, Matt had served the public for almost three decades.

Like others, when I heard Matt had been fatally shot I was utterly shocked.

The accounts of the officers who gave evidence highlighted the dangers and the challenges police officers face."

bermondSey nurSe getS britiSh empire medal

By Isabel Ramirez a BerMondSey nurse, who helped to ensure the public was safe at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, has been recognised with a British empire Medal.

Peter Hollely has been a volunteer for St John's Ambulance for 24 years, so he said it is 'a real honour' to be noticed for his work.

The 37-year-old senior nurse, who lives in Bermondsey, told us: "I started when I was young as a cadet and went from there. None of my family are in

the charity but I wanted to be in public service."

In his time at St John's, Peter has been a volunteer nurse, ambulance crew member and operational commander at many major events in London, like Notting Hill Carnival and the Coronation.

He explained: "I basically ensure everyone is safe and gets efficient medical assistance at big events. We are experts in delivering medical provision in crowds."

Last year, he was in this role for Operation London Bridge - the late

Queen's funeral - and has now received a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his contribution, along with two other volunteers.

Speaking after being awarded his medal at a ceremony at the Tower of London, Peter said: "I lost my mum fourteen years ago but she would be screaming from the rooftops if she was here.

"I am extremely proud and honoured to be the person accepting this award but behind me, there are hundreds of people who helped this plan be delivered."

Peter is currently Head of Nursing for Acute, Urgent and Emergency Care at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust.

He said with his two roles, he splits his time between delivering care on the ground and planning.

For Operation London Bridge, Peter was given leave by the NHS to focus on his role at St John's.

He then worked across more than thirty treatment centres and coordinated the work of all volunteers, dozens of ambulances, and cycle responder teams.

Peter said he was thanked in person

for his work by King Charles III himself, and commented that the King was 'very warm and welcoming.'

But this wasn't his first time meeting royalty. "When I was sixteen," he continued, "I won Cadet of the Year and got to meet Princess Anne. She was an amazing woman."

He added that he's looking forward to the Royal garden party next summer, which he said he will be attending with his loving husband.

chriStmaS 'wonderland' event coming to walworth A cake was made to celebrate Valerie Fenn getting the MBE

By Herbie Russell a CaMBerwell woman has received an MBe for her sixteen years of tireless service to the elmington estate.

Valerie Fenn, 82, was awarded her medal at Buckingham Palace by Princess Anne on Thursday, November 2.

Over the last two decades, Valerie has organised holiday trips for estate residents, got security doors installed and revitalised the green with flowers and an improved play area.

The Elmington Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TRA) Chair said “it was an absolutely fantastic day” that

she would “never forget”.

Valerie, who is disabled, arrived at the Palace in a dial-a-ride bus which became her private vehicle for the day.

“I was a little bit scared because there were so many police with guns. We had to be searched outside Buckingham Place - but they didn’t really search my bag that much,” Valerie said.

But Valerie quickly got into the swing of things and was soon waving to crowds of tourists who, mistaking her for a member of the royal family, swarmed around her.

“I was waving like the Queen. There were so many tourists taking pictures,” Valerie said.

She was then taken inside the palace

Valerie Fenn at the Fox on the Hill pub after receiving her award where she met Princess Anne in the Throne Room. Valerie said: “What a lovely, lovely, natural, down-to-earth lady she was. She said ‘you’ve done such good work.”

She finished the day with a trip to the Fox on the Hill Wetherspoons in Denmark to celebrate her award with friends and family.

In her sixteen years as TRA chair, she has kick-started countless initiatives and projects that have enriched the lives of its residents. Her hard work has seen residents benefit from a parking permit system, regular ‘Fish & Chip Days’ for the elderly and Easter egg hunts for the kids.

“It was a day I’ll never forget,” she said.

On Thursday 7 December, St Peter’s Church will be transformed into a Christmas wonderland.

There will be a Christmas market with street food and drink from twenty outdoor stalls, St Peter’s School choir, a DJ and facepainting.

One of the pop-up stalls will be from Community Cycleworks, an organisation that runs a bike fixing programme on the Aylesbury Estate. They will be donating a bike as a prize in the raffle.

Last time, a Guy's and St Thomas' employee who'd had her bike stolen won the free bike.

Visitors are encouraged to wear their

favourite Christmas outfit for the ‘best festively dressed’ contest.

There’ll also be a young entrepreneur’s zone showcasing the creative skills of young people working with Abi & Fam Creative Zone.

Guests can get their creative juices flowing at an array of craft stalls or they can step inside the Crypt for some fresh bakes from Saint Louie.

There will be a raffle with prizes, that will be raising money for Robes - a charity that helps those experiencing homelessness in Southwark and Lambeth.

wo weeks ago I was delighted to help open the newly refurbished majors part of the Emergency Department at King’s College Hospital.

This section of the Emergency Department helps to look after patients who are often very unwell and require close observation and support. As part of the refurbishment, the number of bays have been increased from 15 to 17 and the walls have been decorated with beautiful photographs from around our local area.

I am really glad to see this investment in the Emergency Department at King’s College Hospital, which will make a huge difference for patients and their loved ones at what is often a very stressful time, as well as creating a much better working environment for the staff who work so hard to care for them.

With the Autumn nights drawing in we will soon be approaching winter which is traditionally the time when there is the highest level of pressure on our hospitals and GP services.

'It is a tough winter ahead for an NHS in crisis' King’s College Hospital and across London, our NHS is facing more pressure and stress than ever before and like so many other public services, it is showing the strain.

The last Labour government turned around our NHS, and the next Labour government will do so again, making sure that our NHS has a sustainable long term future delivering the best healthcare, free at the point of use to everyone who needs it.

An inheritance tax cut isn't what Southwark needs

n Southwark, deprivation is so acute that the council is handing out £100 supermarket vouchers. across the river in westminster, the government could be about to announce an inheritance tax cut. what a strange country we live in.

At the time of writing, the details of Jeremy Hunt’s Autumn Statement haven’t been released. But it looks like the government has been briefing the press on possible tax cuts. In particular, a cut to inheritance tax has been rumoured, which would deliver roughly 50 per cent of its benefit to the wealthiest 1 per cent. Simultaneously, the cost of living crisis is so serious that Southwark Council is still offering out food vouchers and encouraging businesses to become ‘warm hubs’ because people can’t afford to heat their homes.

If the government does have spare cash in the bank, maybe it could go towards boosting local authorities’ budgets, or perhaps subsidising energy bills? There is nothing wrong with cutting taxes and at a time like this, everyone could do with more cash in their pocket. So if tax cuts are on the cards, they must be progressive cuts that benefit those who need them most.

The alternative is a government that, in its bid to appease backbenchers, continues leaving local authorities to pick up the pieces.

The council needs to be ready to react when things go wrong

cafe in walworth could face closure due to ongoing road works outside following the council's plan to pedestrianise streets.

The owners of RudeNboomin say the last year and a half have been a 'nightmare' as LowerTraffic Neighbourhoods (LTN) works are affecting their ability to trade.

As a result of the Streets for People strategy - proposed by Southwark Council to make streets safer by pedestrianising them - Browning Street has been overrun with construction.

Esther Webb, who owns the business with her husband, told us since the work started they have lost most of their trade because people can't walk by easily anymore. The owners themselves said they were not against these LTN plans, but argued that the council should compensate residents and businesses for the disruption they have caused.

The council did not respond on this matter, which is unfortunate, to say the least. Every time a new scheme is implemented, the council is loud and proud - and rightly so. But their job is not simply to celebrate their actions but to react when things go wrong.

Clearly, the work involved in pedestrianising the street is having a detrimental effect on this business and yet, the council is nowhere to be seen.

Camberwell Fair: The debaucherous festival that got shut down in 1855

By Herbie Russell A group of angry residents have demanded an end to the all-night drinking, parties and debauchery conducted by ‘undesirables’ on Camberwell Green. While that could well be an extract from a newspaper article written any time over the last year, this was almost 150 years ago.

Today, Camberwell Fair is a popular festival that doesn't get negative attention

No Right to Party

Introducing the Camberwell Fair; a festival of bizarre circus acts, boozing and music, that had people tearing their hair out from 1279 to 1855.

Rural Beginnings

Camberwell Fair began in 1279, on the grounds of St Giles’ Church. With Camberwell still a rural community throughout the Medieval period, it would’ve had a certain rustic charm.

This was a place people could go to show their best cow, buy handfuls of horse chestnuts or play a game of skittles.

Speaking to the Southwark News in 2018, local theatre director John Whelan said: “It was a place to trade, a place to party and enjoy yourself, and a place to see people from around the community who you wouldn’t see at any other time of the year.”

Urban Temptations

By the 1800s, Camberwell was being enveloped by London’s urban sprawl, its countryside character slowly being eroded.

Camberwell Fair moved to Camberwell Green during this period and reduced its three-week programme to three days.

By then, the fair had adopted the slogan ‘Rare doing at Camberwell Fair’ and new attractions were replacing the activities of old.

John Whelan said: “In 1855 there

would have been fortune tellers and those kinds of things. It would have evolved and changed as society changed.”

Unfortunately for the area’s growing middle class, for whom a raucous festival was already a nuisance, it wasn’t just fortune tellers setting up shop on Camberwell Green.

There were also animal circus acts, ‘freak shows’ and alcohol on sale, while pickpockets and hawkers descended on customers.

One account said: “For these three

In the early 19th century, in a bid to quell the revelry, applications were made at Bow Street Magistrates Court for “12 officers to keep the peace at the Fairs of Camberwell and Peckham, at 5 shillings per day”.

And in 1832, having already banned Peckham Fair, the Camberwell Vestry renewed its campaign against Camberwell’s equivalent.

“Such institutions were intended to be marts for trade and not sources of dissipation and riot,” the Vestry wrote.

By 1855, a local Committee for the Abolition of Camberwell Fair was set up by leading residents.

They pressurised the parish authorities into buying the Green, and closing down the fair, with the help of the police.

The Ongoing Battle for Camberwell Green

Camberwell Green remains a contested space. Only last summer, local residents were complaining about “dodgy” people whose anti-social

drinking was a blight on the park.

In fact, Southwark Council became so concerned by crime in the area that they removed the table tennis tables in a controversial decision that went viral.

But ultimately, this story has a happy ending. In 2015, Camberwell Fair returned and it's been a regular fixture ever since.

Modern visitors can expect DJs, stalls from local restaurants, arts and crafts, and community workshops.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a circus monkey - and that's probably for the best.

‘When I was fifteen,’ he begins, ‘I went to see an immersive performance

by Punchdrunk at Battersea Power Station. Whilst in the lift, a performer said, “You can explore as far as your imagination can go”, and asked who wasn’t afraid. I raised my hand and was then swiftly kicked out of the lift. I then had to navigate the immersive journey of the show alone in the dark. At one point I crawled through a fireplace and discovered an actor eating multiple apples. This experience made me see a completely different side to performance art and how big our imaginations can be when given a shake-up.’

I think Jamie’s family were also shaken up when he returned home and told them he wanted to be an actor. Of course, they had reservations at first but, he tells me, ‘As soon as they saw how much I loved it, they became very supportive.’

Jamie opted for the iconic East 15 Acting School where Joan Littlewood’s legendary workshops changed the future of theatre and which has turned out some of Britain’s best actors for

decades. They prepare their students for any acting role, as Jamie knows well: ‘We once spent three weeks in character recreating a Russian gulag, and building a road to Moscow on the school’s grounds,’ he remembers. ‘I also once had to spend two hours a week for six weeks pretending to be a hippopotamus. It really was an experience!’

An experience that has made Jamie fearless in what roles he takes on. ‘I once did a gender-swapped Beauty and The Beast with five actors where I played Beau (Belle). I loved the collaboration involved in creating the show. The writer played The Beast and the company devised the entire show… I love the twoway energy between the actors and the audience. You both feed off each other.

The feeling of having the audience on your side really puts the wind in your sails.’

Jamie is now rehearsing for the Southwark Playhouse Christmas show, Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch, a musical parody written

by Robyn Grant and Daniel Foxx, which will tour the UK in 2024.

Jamie has been working with the same theatre company for seven years, so the part of Prince Eric was written for Jamie. ‘My part is very different from

the Disney version; my Prince Eric is excitable, ridiculous, a bit clueless, wellintentioned but useless - a classic fop!’

He claims before adding that he also plays other parts.

i waS amazed at how many top shops and designers are Jewish but was disturbed to find, when the visiting the fashion City exhibition, that most people do not know this fact because Jewish tailors and designers felt a need to hide their background, writes Michael Holland...

For millennia, Jews have been hounded out of countries around the world, beaten, tortured, murdered and moved on. Each time having to pick up and start again somewhere else until the next time.

English Christians once cast out the Jews in the 13th century; in 1290 they were expelled by Edward 1 in exchange for Parliament paying off his war debts.

They were even made to wear badges to identify themselves. And that is in England. This, though, happened all over Europe.

With the Russian pogroms of the late 19th century the Jews were once again forced to flee and many came to England and settled in the big cities. They found a home in the East End of London but were barred from many occupations; tailoring, however, was one job they were allowed to do.

Through oppression, hard graft and looking out for each other, the Jews moved slowly up the ladder. From working in sweatshops for others they began their own small tailoring factories, eventually earning good commissions from well-known shops; they opened their own shops to clothe the locals in the days when everyone had to have a suit for ‘Sunday best’, and their products began to

have more of a presence.

A large proportion of the Carnaby Street stores were opened by Jewish tailors and designers. Other West End stores were Jewish-owned: Cecil Gee and Moss Bros being two of the most well-known.

Rebecca Nagli became the famous designer Peggy Lewis; Chaskiel Kupferstein opted for Charles and produced women’s clothing under the brand name “Koupy’; Frederick Weinbaum created his own fake biography to become known to famous couturiers as Frederick Starke. The legendary Marks & Spencer was one of the first large businesses to bear a Jewish name.

Mr Fish was so powerful he had men wearing garish kipper ties, and almost had men in maxi dresses! The Jewish impact on British fashion was complete when they clothed Hendrix, Caine, Jagger, Bowie and Bond in the 60s and 70s - Even Dot Cotton. But, perhaps, the absolute highlight was Lady Diana wearing a coat

Fashion City does much to let the world know how creative Jews are, but their creativity came from centuries of exploitation and injustice and having to do the best with what they were given.

Now, the timeless beauty of what they produced is famous the world over.

murderS in leafy dulwich could ruin chriStmaS anne CoateS has admitted to being behind several murders in her quiet corner of S.e. london and she doesn’t care who knows it, writes Michael Holland...

Anne is a writer who began putting stories together at an early age: ‘I used to write plays to be performed by my friends when I was at primary school,’ she says. ‘I moved on to poetry and gradually started to write short stories.’

Inspired by Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven she upgraded to Sherlock Holmes and also developed a lifelong love of the horror genre through Dennis Wheatley books. Her mother was a great reader and took the young Anne to the local library, then a good English teacher brought books to life as he read to the class, just like her mother did. With more access to books at school, Anne recalls that she could ‘read to my heart’s content’. Even now, she admits to reading contemporary fiction and books aimed at young adults.

But reading novels did not stop Anne from finding time to write seven nonfiction books: ‘They are a lot easier to write’, she reveals. I asked if she had a preference: ‘They are such different parts of me!’ she starts. ‘I enjoy the discipline of non-fiction but adore the freedom of writing fiction.’

the hayward Gallery will present hiroshi Sugimoto: time Machine, the largest retrospective to date of the internationally renowned artist.

Over the past 50 years, Hiroshi Sugimoto has created some of the most alluringly enigmatic photographs of our time: pictures that are precisely crafted and deeply thought-provoking, familiar yet tantalisingly ambiguous.

Featuring key works from all of the artist’s major photographic series, this retrospective will highlight the artist’s philosophical yet playful inquiry into our understanding of time and memory and the ambiguous character of photography as a medium suited to both documentation and invention.

The exhibition will also include lesser-known works that illuminate the artist’s interest in the history of photography as well as in mathematics and optical sciences. Often employing a large-format wooden camera, mixing his own darkroom chemicals and developing his black-and-white prints by hand, Sugimoto has repeatedly re-explored ideas and practices from 19th century photography, including subjects such as dioramas, wax figures and architecture. In the process, his work has stretched and rearranged concepts of time, space and light that are integral to the medium.

Hiroshi Sugimoto says: “The camera is

a time machine capable of representing the sense of time... The camera can capture more than a single moment, it can capture history, geological time, the concept of eternity, the essence of time itself... The more I think about that sense of time, the more I think this is probably one of the key factors of how humans became humans.”

The subject of time is also explored in two subsequent bodies of work featured in the exhibition: shot in movie palaces as well as drive-ins, Sugimoto’s Theaters (1976 - ) capture entire films with a single long exposure, thus compressing all the dramatic action that appeared on screen into a single image of radiant whiteness.

The exhibition will come to a stunning conclusion with a gallery dedicated to Sugimoto’s Opticks (2018 - ), intensely coloured photographs of prismrefracted light. Taking inspiration from Newton’s research into the properties of light whilst calling to mind colour field painting and artists like Mark Rothko, Opticks presents deeply immersive fields of subtly varying hues.

‘Murder in the Lady Chapel opens with the vicar of St John’s finding one of the choristers dying in the church when he’s about to start morning prayers and implores Hannah to find out what she can… While she investigates, someone is trying to intimidate her in a series of seemingly unconnected ways. The past as well as the present haunts her. Will she be able to solve the mystery before Christmas is ruined?’

Anne will use everything for inspiration ‘Anything I read, see, experience can leave a little seed which sometimes germinates months or even years later. Writing a series of crime novels has been eye-opening and inspiring. Characters who may have been subordinate in one book nudge me saying, “It’s my turn now…”’ Minor characters in one book have ended up centre stage further on in the series.

By John Kelly raMPant dulwiCh hamlet did all the damage in the first half as they extended their unbeaten isthmian league Premier division run to six games with a 3-1 dismissal of folkestone invicta at Champion hill last weekend.

The majority of the 3,069 crowd celebrated being treated to goals from Michael Chambers, Danny Mills and Ryley Scott in the opening 42 minutes.

Kane Penn had made it 2-1 on 28 minutes. Scott Heard missed the chance to equalise when his effort hit the bar.

It was Dulwich who created the better chances to add a fourth and

the day ended on a sour note for the visitors as their captain Callum Davies was shown a straight red card two minutes from time.

Dulwich manager Hakan Hayrettin has stressed a number of times this season the importance of trying to take a point from away games and then backing it up with three at home.

“I thought we controlled it from start to finish,” Hayrettin said. “I think we were the better team. We go 2-0 up and that’s where we have to manage the game a little better but we didn’t.

Riakporhe didn’t look like he hadn’t fought since last January as he unloaded an opening-round barrage on the former French champion.

Cruiserweight world title hopeful Riakporhe caught his opponent with a low blow in the next round, with Bregeon given time to recover.

But ‘Midnight Train’ Riakporhe showed little sympathy or mercy as he crashed home a massive right to floor Bregeon. Riakporhe waited

as Bregeon beat the count before resuming his attack, and the fight was brought to an end as the towel was thrown in from the Frenchman’s corner at 1.36 in the second round.

Riakporhe’s devastating win was all the more impressive considering it took points decision for Isaac Chamberlin and Chris Billam-Smith to beat Bregeon.

"That's what we do. I'm different, I've changed, I've been working with Angel Fernandez and he's made me realise that in here I'm a totally different animal. I send a message to everybody," Riakporhe said.

"Once I let those hands go, it's over.

Tokei fighter claims 'spirited' cash prize a CoMPetitor from Bermondsey’s tokei martial arts club claimed £1,000 for most spirited fighter at an event in Crystal Palace last weekend.

It was a big turnout at the British Open Kyokushin competition in southeast London, including a Swiss team testing their skills.

The Millwall midfielder, 30, led his nation out before they fell to a 4-0 defeat away at Finland in their European Championship 2024 qualifier.

Northern Ireland's hopes of making it to the Euros were already over before last week's heavy loss. But Saville's side did manage to redeem themselves on Monday night with an impressive 2-0 win over Denmark.

The defender has found an unexpected patch of goalscoring form in recent weeks, netting in three of the last four games before the international break.

"Every team in sport will want to feel like that but certainly when you're a team like Millwall with a fan base that we have and you're able to create the feeling that we can create at The Den on a certain day with a certain type of performance, it has to be a target for us and we need to get back to that quickly.

"From Thursday onwards, it will start all becoming geared towards Saturday. And that won't just be a mentality thing, it will linked to how

Harding has some theories for how he suddenly became one of Millwall's main goal threats.

He told our paper: "I don't know, it's God's grace at the moment I guess and just being in and around the box. To be fair, I know that nine times out of ten, Coops is going to win the first contact as he's like 6'6 or whatever he is. So just trying to anticipate where it's going to land after that is what I've been trying to do. "[I'm in the] right place, right time.

And it's got to the point where - and I'm going to sound like a striker now - but I'm actually expecting a chance in a game. So it's just about taking the chance, getting a

He said: "I've played several different systems and at different times have had success and favoured different systems but it's all based on players for me. I probably keep speaking about it a lot that I was fairly unknown to a lot of people in and around Millwall when I came into this job. So the fact that I then get the job, people heavily link it to the fact that we're aiming for a very particular style of play.

"Having a clear idea as a coach and beliefs and principles is important.

But I think the absolute art of coaching is getting the best out of what you've got. So they'll be things from myself and Andy that we're trying to instill into the team quickly but, first and foremost, you have to look at the current group of players you've got, in relation to the level of competition they're playing in, and [think] what is going to get the best out of him.

"And at the moment, with how we want to play and with who is fit and available, I just felt that 4-2-3-1 gets enough ball players and attacking players on the pitch and gets Zian [Flemming] in a position where he can be effective. That's not to say we'll be 4-2-3-1 for every game for the rest of this season. We'll gauge it as we go."

Zian Flemming is currently just one goal ahead as Millwall's top scorer this season and Harding was asked if the Dutchman should be worried.

Supporters have now gotten used to Harding's celebration, an imitation of Cristiano Ronaldo's famous 'Siu' move.

Harding said: "That started off at Rotherham last year. A few of us were bantering in training and because I don't expect to score, [I did the celebration] off the back of the banter. And that went

down well.

"So when I scored the first one against Blackburn, I did the same thing and then it's been that ever since."

Millwall's injury problems have eased in recent weeks and lurking on the bench and wanting Harding's place in the starting line-up are Ryan Leonard and Shaun Hutchinson, two defenders who had been first-choice before their knocks.

The 26-year-old said he cannot concern himself about competition and must focus on his own game.

He said: "I can't worry about other people. They're good players and good trainers but to concentrate on them I don't even think that's right for me anyway. I just want to continue doing well myself."

by Kiro Evans Murray wallaCe is over the moon to be reaching 200 Millwall appearances but says he's still got things he wants to achieve at the den.

The defender first appeared for the Lions in August 2018 in a 2-2 draw against Middlesborough and has seen plenty of ups and downs during his time at the club.

He will hit the milestone of appearances if he plays against Coventry City on Saturday and says he's proud to reach the landmark - but is still focused on dragging Millwall to a coveted Championship play-off position.

Wallace told our paper: "It's amazing.

It will be the most appearances I've made for any club and it's obviously a nice milestone for me and to have been playing regularly since I've come here, which is always nice.

"When you're at a club for this long, you feel really settled. I'm quite fortunate to have players who have been here as long as me, if not longer, like Hutch [Shaun Hutchinson] and Coops [Jake Cooper] so that obviously helps, especially when it's players you play around like defenders."

"Personally I just want to make as many appearances I can. It's nice the 200 game mark is coming up but obviously I want to play as many as possible. As for the team, we've been getting so close to those play-off spots and we've been gradually getting better every season and it would be nice to make that final step and get into the play-offs".

The 30-year-old did not hesitate when asked about his favourite memory from his five years at The Den, immediately referencing his last-minute winner against Everton in the FA Cup. The Lions were handed a daunting task when they were drawn to face Marco Silva's side in the fourth round of the competition in January 2019, but goals from Lee Gregory, Cooper and eventually Wallace led to a famous 3-2

Asked about his favourite moment, Wallace said: "The Everton goal. That was amazing. I think the season before I came, Millwall had gone on a good run and they had a bit of a reputation for going on good FA Cup runs and

that was sort of my first experience of an FA Cup run at Millwall. And to have The Den packed out playing against a Premier League team and scoring a lastminute winner... the atmosphere and the celebrations, it was just brilliant. It was something I will never forget.

"At the time it was a bit of a blur and it was only a few days after that it sunk in. And every year when it comes up to around that time, it helps when they drop a 'on this day' video to reminisce

a little bit."

Having been brought in under Neil Harris and then playing under Gary Rowett for four years, Wallace is now adapting to his newest head coach in Joe Edwards. The full-back said he's been impressed with his new boss' impact so far.

He said: "Him and [assistant head coach] Andy [Myers] are very approachable. He's been chatting to the lads one-on-one after training and stuff

like that and getting a feel for the squad personally which is a nice touch.

"He said that he's watched us and knows we're a good, hard-working team. He doesn't want to come in and change everything. He knows he's got a good base to work with. It was just more about when we regain [the ball], not to think we having to score straight away which is something you can become focused upon when you don't have the ball for long amounts of time."

Home debut for Edwards against Coventry

by Kiro Evans Joe edwardS will manage his first game at The Den against woefully out-of-form Coventry City.

Following the head coach's stunning 4-0 debut win against Sheffield Wednesday, the challenge is now for Millwall to deliver consecutive league wins for the first since March.

If the Owls were straightforward first opponents for Edwards, Coventry are also not the most daunting opposition on paper having lost four of their last five.

But wins are far from guaranteed for the home side at The Den these days, regardless of the strength of the opposition. It was only three months ago that Reading, now bottom of League One, took a 4-0 victory from south-east London in the Carabao Cup. The Lions have picked up just a single point from their last four home league games and have lost

six of nine home matches in all competitions this season.

Edwards' arrival seems to have given the Lions a boost and the international break would have given him a chance to spend plenty of time on the training ground with the squad.

Coventry would also have appreciated the extended break as they look to regroup after a wobble that has seen them slide down the Championship table.

Last season's beaten play-off finalists have drawn more games than any other team in the league, lacking a killer instinct to take three points from matches instead of one. Just like last year, they are off to a shaky start.

Where before the issue was with their stadium's turf, this season's early struggles come after they lost their two best players, Viktor Gyökeres and Gustavo Hamer, to Sporting Lisbon and Sheffield United respectively.

Mark Robins, the fifth longestserving manager in the top four

flights of English football, faces the task of trying to get his side going despite losing the quality of the pair.

Hamer was sent off the last time these two met at The Den in a game that saw Millwall recover from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in an exhilarating encounter.

Jake Cooper, George Honeyman and George Saville all scored to give the Lions a sensational win in August 2022.

Later that season, a second-half goal by Gyökeres was enough to give Coventry a 1-0 win against Millwall on Valentine's Day at the CBS Arena.

by Kiro Evans Millwall'S direCtor of recruitment has told fans to not expect a major overhaul in the next transfer window.

Joe Edwards' arrival as the new head coach earlier this month has brought with it hopes of a fresh style of play and exciting new recruitments.

The window re-opens in January when clubs will get a chance to boost their squads with mid-season additions.

Alex Aldridge has been heavily involved in Millwall's signings since joining the club in 2015 and, after leaving and then rejoining from Stoke City, became the Director of Football Operations and Recruitment at The Den in 2022.

He said that he and Edwards were looking towards the future rather than a dash to bring in recruitments at the next possible opportunity.

Aldridge told our paper: "Yes we've had

Millwall's recruitment head focusing on future deals rather than January window chats about the January transfer window but more of our discussion is about the next two, three and four transfer windows and what we want the squad to look like and how we're going to get there. I think we have to be realistic and Joe is realistic that you can't make big changes to your squad in January. It's an availability-driven transfer window the majority of the time.

"There's a few factors in there. Injuries are up 15% in the Premier League this season, I think partly due to the extra time that we're playing and the knock-on effect of the mid-season World Cup last year, which means squads are a bit more stretched so it might be harder to get players out on loan.

You've also got the African Cup of Nations in the new year which will have a knock-on effect in terms of the availability of players from those clubs. Not just the players going to AFCON but then the players that stay behind and maybe slot into squads to cover injuries in the Premier League.

"Of course we'll look at the squad and strengthen where we can but more of our

discussions are about the long-term and looking ahead to next summer and the bigger picture beyond that."

While he has never managed a senior club before, Edwards arrives with a raft of experiences and connections from various roles at Chelsea, Everton and the Football Association, where he was briefly England's Under-20 boss earlier this year.

Aldridge is positive that the 37-year-old's "strong network" of contacts can help in the Lions' attempts to sniff out a good deal in the competitive transfer market.

But he warns this will not automatically result in Millwall snatching the best youth talent from the biggest clubs.

He said: "It will be useful because Joe's come from a world, not just at Chelsea but Everton and the Football Association, so his network is really strong. Joe's had a lot of contact time with top players, coaches, managers, technical directors and has done a wide variation roles at Chelsea over the years including the loan manager role for a period of time.

"The most powerful thing is not just his knowledge of the players, but knowledge of his personalities and characters and being able to help us with the referencing and background of those players. A lot has been made of Joe’s relationships at Chelsea and there's possibly an expectation that the January window will open and the best two under-21s from Chelsea will turn up on the first of January which won't be the case. Any player we sign has to be the right player for the right reasons, and there has to be an opportunity for that player.

"We've had good success with Premier League loans. Brooke [Norton-Cuffy] is doing well, Cressy and Shacks [Charlie Cresswell and Jamie Shackleton] last year, Dan Ballard the year before that, Jayson Molumby from Brighton several years ago.

So I think we're already well-regarded by Premier League clubs but I think Joe will only add to that.

"He's got a very good network and a lot of people know Joe, like Joe and trust Joe at Premier League clubs.”

Sarkic back from injury in major boost Matija Sarkic has missed 11 games with injury

The goalkeeper, a summer signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers, has missed 11 games with a quad muscle issue picked up around the time of September's 1-1 draw against Birmingham City.

Millwall boss Joe Edwards said: "He's back. He's in contention for selection now. He's been training for this whole international period."

The only fresh injury concern for Millwall is Danny McNamara who has taken a knock on the knee that leaves him "touch and go" for Saturday.

Edwards added: "Danny McNamara took a knock to his knee at the end of last week in training. He's back out on the grass rehabbing now and whether Danny will be involved against Coventry is probably touch and go at this stage but it definitely won't be one that keeps him out for long."

Meanwhile Joe Bryan, who hurt his groin against Blackburn Rovers last month, is expected to be out until Christmas.

"He's on the training pitch but it's very early stage rehab," Edwards said. "Joe will still be a few weeks. It will probably be in and around Christmas. Whether he'll feature in games and whether we'll be able to get him ready for Christmas itself I'm not sure."

Duncan Watmore is also set to return to the matchday squad after overcoming an injury issue that has kept him out since the 2-2 draw with Hull City last month.
