A Labour councillor admitted residents had been shown “a lack of respect” by Southwark Council during a project that went £1.7 million over budget and seventeen months over schedule.

Residents have also claimed they’ve been left with damaged, “freezing cold” flats, ugly paint jobs and costly bills for the works.

Southwark Council's Interim Housing Director David Quirke-Thompson offered an “unreserved apology” for disruption to residents at an overview and scrutiny committee meeting on Wednesday, October 4. He and councillors for both Labour and the opposition Liberal Democrat party have advocated for independent scrutiny of the project.

Durkan began works on the Canada Estate, which included replacement windows and doors, asbestos removal and external decorations in October 2020.

However, the News revealed last month that works ran seventeen months over schedule leaving residents stranded “on a building site” for far longer than planned.

Delays contributed to rising costs which rose from an original estimate of £4,837,276.02 to an estimated £6,573,525.00 as of July 2023.

Estate resident Michael Robertson previously told the News he and other leaseholders expected to pay £26,000 each.

At Wednesday's meeting, Rotherhithe ward councillor Stephanie Cryan said: “There’s a whole litany of mistakes and errors that have been compounded here which has led to a really awful time for residents."

“They’ve not been treated with respect… definitely not by the contractors and not by some officers,” she added.

She continued: “There’s a basic service that people should get and there’s a basic courtesy of standard that people should get which has fallen well short in this case.”

Among those alleged mistakes is the issue of replacement windows which saw sliding windows replaced with tilting designs, which residents claim they weren’t properly consulted on.

Estate resident Melane Willock said: “The brickwork was damaged during the removal of my windows - never fixed.”

She said this had caused draughts which have left parts of her flat “freezing cold”.

Ms Willock added: “The wind whistles through the air vents creating a very highpitched noise that is unbearable for a lot of tenants.”

Residents also say the new windows don't allow balcony access which makes it very difficult to clean their exterior panes.

Cllr Cryan said there had been a “catalogue of misinformation” meaning Southwark Council was “misled” about the impossibility of installing windows allowing balcony access.

She said, that in December 2020, she was briefed during a council meeting the London Fire Brigade had said such designs would breach fire regulations.

This later turned out to be untrue. “There was no fire brigade request for the windows to be changed. They could have been likefor-like,” she said.

“I’m really concerned that I was given information that I took to be true but I was misled.”

She added: “I still to this day don’t know why I was told that information.”

Barry Duckett, chair of the Canada Estate Tenants' and Residents' Association said the project had been "a farce from day one".

Others have said holes were cut in hallway walls only to be shoddily covered up.

People have also said the contractor started painting buildings magnolia only to discover residents wanted battleship grey – meaning buildings are now a mishmash of the two.

A council report authored by a senior housing officer said Covid-19 and “extended consultation” with residents were among the reasons for the overspend and delays.

Nonetheless, residents and cross-party councillors have advocated for in-depth, independent scrutiny of the project.

Among those voices was Cllr Cllr Irina von Wiese, vice-chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, who said: “This isn’t just a shambles, it is a full-blown scandal.

"The residents of Canada Estate have been treated with complete contempt while they have been rightfully seeking some transparency and accountability."

Mr Quirke-Thompson said: “I think the only way we can regain the trust of the residents here is by having a transparent, detailed look at what happened, having accountability, putting it right and then having the continual tests and scrutiny of conduct in this area.”

Southwark Council and Durkan were approached for comment.

"Then for the 2014 elections, I was asked to stand for St George's Ward and I won.

Now I've been a councillor for nine years."

Her patch, St George's Ward - which takes in the northern part of Elephant and Castle and the southern part of Borough - has one of London's highest Latin American populations.

Maria is proud of her Latin American roots, something that drives a lot of the work she does today as a councillor in Southwark.

She founded Su Mano Amiga, a charity aiding domestic violence survivors, primarily among Spanish and Portuguesespeaking communities.

"In the Latin American community especially, there is a lot of domestic violence. That's the main reason I started this initiative. It's important that people get the support to stop the circle of abuse. The last thing we want them to do is to become perpetrators themselves."

When Tony got ill, she said she had to let that go to look after him - but continues to support survivors outside of the group including running a creative monthly dance workshop for women and children.

Although she has been consistently

politically active, the issue of party politics doesn't seem to weigh heavy on her mind, with her claiming she is good friends with lots of Labour councillors - 'they are not my enemies', she said.

In August we profiled Southwark's youngest councillor 23-year-old Joseph Vambe, whose tuition fees at Cambridge University were subbed by megastar Stormzy.

A Labour councillor, Joseph lives and grew up in Elephant and Castle and now has his own programme ‘EquivalentExchange’ which supports, mentors and provides opportunities for pupils in the most disadvantaged local schools.

By the time the next local elections come around in 2026, Maria will be 81 and says she thinks that it would be time to stand down.

Local councillors are elected to help and represent people with issues in Southwark from housing to street cleaning and anything that they feel needs addressing by the local authority.

Man charged with murder of Keelen Morris Wong

By Kevin Quinn A man has been charged with the murder of a Keelen Morris Wong, who was stabbed in Brixton.

By Isabel Ramirez The filming for a new crime series caused some panic at the weekend in Bermondsey, including one passer-by who reported the convincing set ‘looked like a real incident.’

Steve Cornish, a Rotherhithe resident, said he was driving along on Sunday 8 October and spotted the unusual sight down Spa Road, near where it meets Grange Road.

He described what appeared to be a bus with its roof blown off – surrounded by debris.

“I quickly put the brakes on,” he told us. “I thought it was a major incident.”

He said he got out of his car and walked towards the park where he saw a man in a high-vis Southwark Council jacket.

“I asked what was going on and he said there was no need for alarm – that it was a film set.”

Steve commented on the ‘lack of signage’ to say it was a set. “They could have put signs up. There were only road diversion signs but it wouldn’t have scared me so much if I’d known. It

looked so real.”

Like Steve, others went to social media to share their initial panic.

One Twitter user wrote: “Saw this on the way to local shops this afternoon, must admit it did make me a little panicked until I realised it was a film set.”

Someone else on Facebook was also duped and posted a photo of the scene with the caption: “Bus blew up down Spa Road.”

But some people had answers, claiming they had been told filming would be taking place – like Bell Zeki, the owner of a cafe in Bermondsey Spa Gardens.

Asked what they were filming for, a Disney+ spokesperson said: “Disney+ were filming a new series “Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes.”

They assured production is adhering to all regulations, and told us all local residents and businesses surrounding the site were notified in advance of filming through letter drops.

A Southwark Council spokesperson, added: “We are sorry for any initial distress caused to some residents by the film scene on Spa Road.

“We took measures to ensure that the film company notified residents weeks ahead of filming and stationed marshals onsite to provide assurances and minimise any disturbances.

“On the day, officers were onsite and quickly advised that additional signage was needed and placement improved to avoid confusion. As a result, the film company promptly moved signage to address any blind spots.”

Currently, no details are available regarding the dates of release.

He explained: "Before any work like this gets carried out that involves digging into the ground - they have to assess the threat level of the place. It's been worked out that about ten per cent of all bombs that were dropped or fired, failed to go off."

Asked about the likelihood of them

finding another one in the area, he said there was simply no way of knowing commenting: "That could have been a one-off thing that was imported from another area.

"However," he continued, "what we do have to do now we have found this here, is make sure that every piece of intrusive work is now checked by an expert."

We also asked Mr Wilkin how likely it was for a bomb of that age to be dangerous this many years later.

He responded, "Generally, an ordnance that was dropped or fired like this one can become corroded which means the part that initiates the device can seize up. It becomes rusty.

"People have been walking over it and driving over it for 70-80 years and there was probably no risk of that ever going off," he said, "because there's enough hard-standing above it that was likely to set it off.

"I handled it so there was nothing in it that gave me cause for concern.

"Some things can be more volatile this was not one of those times. This was a very small item - so it had obviously been fired up in the air and dropped back down again."

The bomb was taken away in an ammo case by the bomb disposal team to be disposed of later on and the roads are back open again.

An enquiry has been put to the police regarding the incident.

World War Two bomb found on residential street in Bermondsey

By Isabel Ramirez Residents and businesses were evacuated after a World War Two bomb was discovered on a residential street in Bermondsey.

At around 11 am on Monday 9 October, workmen from Thames Water discovered the bomb, which was deemed by an expert not to be dangerous, when doing work on Beatrice Road, a residential area off the Blue shopping area of Southwark Park Road in Bermondsey.

At the scene Ritchie Wilkin, EOD Unexploded Ordnance Consultant, who was brought in to assess the danger, explained that an evacuation followed 'solely as a precaution.'

He told us: "During these Thames Water workers' excavations this morning, they scratched around and thought they saw something."

Mr Wilkin said his job was to be there just in case and provide cover if anything was found. This area in particular has a risk given it was bombed heavily during the Second World War. "We saw the item and identified it was something from the World War Two era," he said. "We worked out it was fairly safe to move so we picked it up out of the hole and called the police."

team arrived at the scene ten minutes later.

"They made the same assessment we'd made - that it was safe. But as a precaution, everyone was evacuated within a 100-metre radius purely for safety reasons."

He explained the police went around and did door-to-door knocks 'within thirty minutes of the finding' - including residents living in the houses on Beatrice Road and businesses on Southwark Park Road. But he added that it was over

We approached the film company for comment following concerns over a ‘lack of signage’.

The Disney+ spokesperson said: “We worked closely with TFL, the police and the local council to ensure filming regulations were meticulously followed, with film signage and barriers in place, alongside marshals and security canvassing the area to make members of the public and local residents aware that filming was taking place.”

The 22-year-old was stabbed on Coldharbour Lane at 4.44pm last Tuesday, October 3. Police and paramedics attended but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Keelen's next of kin were aware and were being supported by specially trained officers.

Kyiza Sandiford, 23, (d.ob.

19.9.00) from Merton, appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Saturday, where he also faced a charge of possessing an offensive weapon.

He was remanded into custody until his next appearance at the Old Bailey on Tuesday.

A fifteen-year-old boy was arrested on 5 October on suspicion of murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

He has been bailed, pending further inquiries, to a date in early January.

Another fifteen-year-old boy was arrested on 6 October on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Local Democracy Reporter PlAns foR a new park, bigger than a football pitch, a new tesco and 384 of homes at Canada Water were approved by southwark councillors on last week.

The new homes would be built across five buildings arranged around the park on a plot of land currently occupied by an Odeon cinema, Hollywood Bowl, Pizza Hut and parking spaces on the Surrey Quays leisure park.

The proposals were approved unanimously by a council planning committee on Tuesday, October 3, made up of four Labour councillors and one Liberal Democrat. But speaking at the meeting, ex-docker and local resident Barry Duckett blasted developer British Land for failing to adequately reference the history of Canada Dock in the park’s design.

He said: “There’s nothing in there depicting the history of this area. […] When you look at the planning permission that’s been granted so far and look at Canada Water, that’s become a puddle with a wonderful deck going through it.

“There’s a big past here but it’s not in this park… Until we start realising there is a history I’m afraid it’s just gone, we’re gone. We may as well not

be in it. […] Once you’ve signed this off you’ve signed away the past because there’s nothing there to depict the past.”

Mr Duckett went on to brand developer British Land’s attempts to incorporate the dock’s history into the proposed park “laughable,” adding that he had spent three hours speaking with staff from the company about ways to include references to Canada Dock in the plans.

Arianna Ricciotti from British Land said the company had consulted with “numerous local groups” about the design of the park and had incorporated more of the site’s history into the plans based on the feedback.

These references included “marking the former dock head with inscriptions, and using the dock as a reference for informal play features,” she added.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, chair of the planning committee, said he was “impressed” that play equipment in the planned park referenced the history of the nearby Printworks building, but added it would be “good to see more of the dock’s legacy” in the design as well.

In response to these concerns, councillors agreed to add a condition to the plans about including features in the park that referenced the history of the docks.

The plans include 532 basement parking spaces for customers of the supermarket and those visiting the wider Canada Water area.

The five blocks of flats surrounding the park will range from six to 30 storeys. Of the 384 planned homes, 89 will be available at the cheapest social rents and a further 45 will be shared ownership homes, where a person

buys a share of a property and pays rent on the remaining amount. The remaining homes will be sold privately at market rates.

British Land’s planning advisor said the company was struggling to find a company to run a cinema on the site but was continuing its search for a new operator.

The Canada Water Masterplan will create up to 3,000 new homes, offices for 20,000 workers and a new town centre for the area.

Canada Dock was built in 1876 and took its name from the country of origin of much of the cargo on board ships making use of the dock. By the 1980s, most of the dock had been filled in, with the bulk of the site covered by Surrey Quays shopping centre.

By Herbie Russell A housing campaign group fears southwark Council’s landmark redevelopment of the Aylesbury estate is “up in the air” as freshly revealed documents show it tried and failed to take over the regeneration.

The developer has, however, insisted that it remains “committed” to delivering homes on the Aylesbury Estate - although it and the council refused to be drawn on whether a completion date of 2036 was still achievable.

The revelation that the council attempted to acquire roughly 2,000 of the site's 3,575 homes has fuelled speculation that developer Notting Hill Genesis (NHG) is struggling to build the homes it committed to in 2015.

Such speculation is compounded by NHG’s recent admission it fell short of its own nation-wide house-building targets in the last financial year.

In the meantime, dozens of families, some of whom are stranded in vermininfested flats, are living on the estate waiting for new homes to be built.

Southwark Council said its plans to take over portions of the Aylesbury Estate regeneration were scuppered when central government’s economic decisions "led to rapid inflation”.

A vERY BRiEF HiSTORY

Walworth's Aylesbury Estate, with a mammoth 2,700-flats was built by Southwark Council in the late 1970s. Once completed, it was one of the biggest public housing estates in Europe.

Over the next 40 years, it fell into disrepair, leaving Southwark Council to decide whether to refurbish the estate or demolish and redevelop it.

In 2014, Southwark Council made the controversial decision to demolish and rebuild the estate in partnership with private developers including NHG. In 2015, NHG secured planning permission to build a maximum 3,983 homes on the site. They later committed to build 3,500 of these, with L&Q delivering the rest.

According to a council report, NHG and Southwark Council had hoped to complete the regeneration by 2032. Around 2018, this was pushed back to 2036.

SOuTHWARK cOuNcil’S iNcREASiNG iNvOlvEMENT

Since then things have changed slightly, with Southwark Council agreeing to take on more house-building responsibilities.

In July 2020, with construction on the First Development Site stalling, Southwark Council bought 280 extra homes from NHG for £193 million.

Labour councillors celebrated the deal, pointing out it meant 280 private flats would be built as social rent flats.

However, it also meant people started asking questions about who was now in charge of the Aylesbury Estate redevelopment.

THE HiDDEN DOcuMENT

So when, in January 2022, Southwark Council announced plans to alter its 2014 development partnership agreement with NHG, but hid the details of those changes in a closed report, eyebrows were raised.

Local housing campaign group The 35% Campaign submitted a freedom of information (FOI) request to get Southwark Council to reveal the contents of the report.

Southwark Council initially refused. But after eighteen months of persistence, the 35% Campaign finally obtained the closed report with some key lines no longer

Astonishingly, it showed that Southwark Council had planned to take responsibility for huge portions of the Aylesbury Estate redevelopment away from NHG. Under its proposals, the council would have built approximately 2,000 of the homes, dwarfing the number being built

by NHG. Last week, the News approached Southwark Council and NHG asking why this dramatic change to a long-standing agreement had been agreed. The short answer is - it hadn’t.

SOuTHWARK STOPPED iN iTS TRAcKS

Southwark Council admitted that, in a bid to “leave no stone unturned”, it had explored taking over some phases of the project in order to deliver more overall social housing.

Cllr Helen Dennis, the interim Cabinet Member for New Homes & Sustainable Development, said: “In 2021 an opportunity arose, thanks to changes in rules around financial borrowing, for the council to take over some phases of the project.

“This would have allowed us to build more council homes, and at a faster pace – both things residents have told us they want. These changes required complex discussions and negotiations with our partners Notting Hill Genesis.”

However, Cllr Dennis has suggested that former Prime Minister Liz Truss’s minibudget, which saw inflation sky-rocket, scuppered the council’s plans.

Cllr Dennis said: “The devastating impact of the Government’s economic decisions led to rapid inflation and much higher interest rates, resulting in an extremely challenging context.”

As a result, the council says negotiations with NHG were abandoned and it was agreed not to take the plans forward.

NHG has said it is “delighted” to continue to provide new homes on the Aylesbury.

iS NOTTiNG Hill GENESiS STill cOMMiTTED TO THE PROJEcT?

Construction has not started on 2,000 of the 3,500 homes promised to be built and, despite NHG’s reassurances, many are questioning whether they can be delivered as planned and on time.

Cllr Dennis has however highlighted the progress already made. She said: “Over 600 new homes at council or social rent

have either been completed or started on the estate, including 23 brand new homes for over 55s on the area known as Plot 18, new homes for those with learning disabilities and a new Extra Care facility.

"Every home on the site known as FDS B will be a council home. We are also looking forward to the opening of the new library towards the end of this year, a new community centre, and a medical centre in 2024.”

But Jerry Flynn, a spokesperson for the 35% Campaign, said: “The whole future of the Aylesbury regeneration appears to be up in the air, when it is less than half finished.

“Southwark resolved to take it over from Notting Hill Genesis back in January 2022, but now realise that they do not have the resources to do the job.”

There are other reasons why some suspect NHG may be looking for a way out of the project.

Firstly, despite securing outline planning permission for the site in 2015 NHG decided not to follow it and instead submit a standalone application for Phase 2B. Mr Flynn has questioned why it would do this if it was still committed to delivering all 3,500 homes as planned.

“NHG says that they want to continue providing new homes, but why are they not using the outline planning permission they already have to do this?” Mr Flynn asked.

Answering those queries, an NHG spokesperson said: “The Outline Planning Permission is still in place and as we move onto each phase we will work in partnership with the community and the council to ensure we deliver the best possible outcomes.”

Furthermore, the soaring price of building materials and personnel, which saw house-building costs rise by 4.5 per cent between June 2022 and 2023, could also be slowing the regeneration.

Importantly, both NHG and Southwark Council have recently gone public over their separate house-building woes.

In its 2023 financial report, NHG said it was pursuing a “constrained” development programme and that it had only started building 459 homes that financial year - almost 1,000 less than its target.

Meanwhile, Southwark Council’s former housing chief Michael Scorer admitted the authority lacked the cash to meet its

target of building 11,000 homes by 2043.

Finally, NHG had already pushed its regeneration completion date for the Aylesbury back from 2032 to 2036.

Despite repeated requests by the News Southwark Council and NHG have refused to say whether they believe the regeneration date of 2036 could still be met.

STRANDED ON THE AYlESBuRY

The real losers in this are arguably Southwark residents - particularly the 17,000-plus individuals on the housing waiting list.

Georgie Howell lives in temporary accommodation on the Aylesbury Estate, with her two young children, in one of the hundreds of flats earmarked for demolition.

She is desperate for a new home and says her flat is infested with vermin. “Pest control are coming over again tomorrow because there’s been more,” she said.

“There’s still cockroaches, vermin, mould and damp and my housing officer still doesn’t reply.”

Georgie says she’s seen new builds on the Aylesbury Estate appear on Southwark Homesearch but that she is sometimes 100th in the queue.

In Taplow Block, Fatmata Koroma, lives

with her five children in a flat she says has been infested with cockroaches and mice for nine years.

Fatmata said: “It seems like the council has just neglected the estate because they know it’s going to be knocked down.”

THE FuTuRE OF THE AYlESBuRY ESTATE

Many questions submitted by this paper have gone unanswered including how much the scrapped deal would have cost the council and what the current timeline for the regeneration is.

But even if NHG’s most recently announced completion date of 2036 remains correct, that’s still a long time away.

As we have seen over the course of the regeneration so far, a lot can change in a decade. The council, developers and residents will all hope the economic and political situation will make the Aylesbury’s successful regeneration possible.

At its party conference, Labour recently committed to building 1.5 million homes in just five years through planning reform and fast-tracking brownfield schemes.

In the meantime, NHG has reiterated its commitment to building new homes the Aylesbury. Its spokesperson said: “Ever since we were selected as Southwark Council’s development partner for the Aylesbury Estate in 2014 we have been committed to providing safe, energy efficient and high quality homes for the community there, and that is as much the case now as ever.

“While we understood Southwark Council’s decision to look into delivering future phases of the Aylesbury Estate regeneration and have always been supportive of the delivery of increased council housing, we are delighted to be able to continue providing new homes and this important regeneration in partnership with the council.”

By Isabel Ramirez A motheR of �ive, who lives on the Aylesbury estate, says she found cockroaches in her kids' cereal and even a dead mouse, as she recounts nine years of nightmare infestations.

Fatmata Koroma, 34, said the nightmare began shortly after she moved into her Taplow block residence in 2014.

According to her, "There were always cockroach infestations and mice, especially in winter when they're looking for somewhere warm to nest."

With five young children, Fatmata added: "The kids are so scared - they sleep in my bed most nights."

Despite being the one speaking out, she claims the problem is not limited to her home but affects the entire Taplow block.

Fatmata explained that pest control efforts initiated by the council consistently fail to provide any lasting solution. "They don't treat the whole block, so the pests keep coming back.

"I keep finding cockroaches everywhere - all over the beds every day. They're even in my kids' cereal. I recently found a dead mouse in there too.

"I'm so tired of this."

Last year, she told us, a mouse chewed through an electric cooker cable, sparking a fire in their home.

She said the issues don't stop there: "We have also had a lot of problems with the boiler. We had no heating the whole winter last year.

"The engineers refused to come and fix the heating whilst there were infestations," she claimed.

In addition to this, the conditions have resulted in financial strain for the single mother.

Mum of five shares nine-year ordeal of infestations on Aylesbury Estate In 2019, Fatmata was taken to court by Southwark Council due to rent arrears.

On this, she explained the infestation problem has led to her having to replace lots of items in the home and heat it when there were issues with the boiler: "It gets very expensive."

Despite a court ruling in her favour, with the council being ordered to pay her compensation and do repairs, she told us the conditions have not significantly improved.

As a part-time NHS maternity support worker, Fatmata said she's anxious about potentially carrying cockroach eggs into her workplace and said she is on antidepressants due to the stress.

The Aylesbury Estate is currently undergoing regeneration, with some blocks already rebuilt. However, Fatmata’s block falls under phase three, and there is uncertainty about when the necessary renovations will begin.

Fatmata said: "It seems like the council has just neglected the estate because they know it's going to be knocked down."

This prolonged wait exacerbates the family's suffering, leaving them in a state of dread, 'especially with winter approaching,' Fatmata commented.

"How long do they expect us to live in these conditions," she said.

Fatmata highlighted the difficulty of getting comprehensive treatment - which

involves spraying the whole house - due to the presence of her children: "The pest control officers have always refused to do it before."

However, since the story went public last week, she said the council finally allowed a full treatment.

We asked the council why it had taken so long to sort out.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for homes, communities and finance, said: “It is not acceptable for anyone to have to live with pests inside their property, and the footage taken by the tenant is horrifying.

"We do all that we can to prevent pests on Aylesbury Estate with regular

treatments of both the whole blocks and individual flats when needed.

"Both housing and pest control officers are on site on the estate almost every day and I am sorry if we have not responded quickly enough to the tenant about this matter on this occasion.

"We will treat the tenant’s property as a matter of urgency, which we hope will resolve the problem.”

While they claim regular pest control is conducted in communal areas, Fatmata disputes this, stating it hasn't happened since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Fatmata is currently on the bidding list to move, as she desperately tries to find a place of safety for her family.

elsie celebrates 100th birthday with tales of naZi planes and a Mysterious soldier artist

By Herbie Russell 100-YEAR-OLD ELSIE Jane hall spent her birthday recounting tales of WWii evacuation and hiding from nazi planes last week.

She celebrated the milestone with friends, family and the Mayor of Southwark at the Tower Bridge Care Home in Bermondsey on Wednesday, October 4.

Born in Battersea in 1923, she had eight siblings including five sisters and three brothers.

She left school aged just fourteen to take up employment as a needleworker repairing and making clothes on Saville Row. “It was very classy that place. There were a lot of repairs. I enjoyed it - it was quite interesting work,” she said.

She learned skills there she kept for the rest of her life and would make

her two sons’ school uniforms from scratch.

But after WWII broke out in the summer of 1939, like 1.5 million others, she was evacuated to the countryside and found herself in Cambridge.

“It was a bit of upheaval. You had to share a bed with somebody else because Cambridge isn’t a very big place! It was very quiet. I enjoyed it but I didn’t enjoy the war!”

She took up work at Pye Radio, a Cambridge-based electronics manufacturer making important components for radars - which would later prove instrumental in the Allied victory.

Astonishingly, despite moving away from her home in London, Elsie still managed to have a run-in with a Nazi plane.

“One came down very low when I

was on my way to work,” she said.

Elsie jumped for cover but, in hindsight, realises her chosen hideout wouldn’t have offered much protection.

“Stupidly, I dived under the lamppost.

That’s not much cop is it?’”

Elsie still has a memento from her time in Cambridge - an illustrated portrait of herself drawn by a mysterious soldier who signed his name as Harry Dodd.

After the war, she returned to Battersea. Having met her husband Percy, they married and had two boys Carl in 1949 and Bruce in 1953.

Together, the family lived in Surrey Docks but would later move to Galleywall Road, Bermondsey, before settling on Rodney Road, Elephant and Castle.

Their home which was part of the Rockingham Estate where Elsie took

up an active role, regularly advocating for her neighbours.

In 2001, aged 77, she was awarded a Southwark Civic Award for her service to her estate.

Around that time, she also took up work at the canteen in what was then the Rachel McMillan teacher training school but now London South Bank University.

Mayor of Southwark Michael Situ told Elsie: “We still give these out to the most impactful residents so for you to have received this means you would have been so special.”

Her grandson Adam fondly remembers visiting his Elsie as a little boy. He said: “My brother and I used to come down from Buckinghamshire to stay with Nanny.

“I loved Irn-Bru so she would always buy me a bottle of that while my brother liked Sarsaparilla so she

always had a bottle of that when we came.

“We used to love coming up and spending time with her. She was strict but we did get to do lot of things we weren’t allowed to see at home! I think that’s the role of a grandparent - to be the cool, nice one.”

As well as needle-working, Elsie would go on to work as a chef at the Rachel McMillan teacher training school - a building which has cine been swallowed up by London South Bank University (LSBU).

Today, she is the loving greatgrandmother to two boys aged three and five.

Asked what the key to a long life was, she had two pieces of advice: “Be who you want to be” and “be happy”.

But she’s had some help along the way. “My boys have kept me happy,” she said.

To ensure it is completed as quickly as possible the work, being carried out by contractor FM Conway, will continue 24 hours a day, but will 'not generate a lot of noise', with power tools not used between 9 pm and 8 am.

City Bridge Foundation Chairman Giles Shilson said since the bridge opened to mark the millennium, it has become a 'much loved' fixture, but commented that it is 'starting to show its age.'

“The separation layer under the bridge deck has started to degrade," he explained, "which means it’s having an adverse effect on the bridge deck and needs addressing urgently.

“Replacing this layer is a time-

consuming process, meaning we have no option but to close the bridge for three weeks and to work round the clock to get it done as quickly as possible.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience but hope people will understand we do need to do this work, and will see the benefits after we give the bridge a much-needed deep clean that will leave it looking as good as new.”

The bridge will close at 8 am on Saturday 14 October and reopen on Sunday 5 November, or sooner if the work is completed more quickly.

Signed pedestrian diversion routes will be in place via Southwark Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge.

Millennium Bridge has enjoyed a colourful history, initially known as the ‘wobbly bridge’ due to issues when it first opened in 2001.

Millennium Bridge closing for three weeks for repair works

millennium BRidge will be closed for up to three weeks for round-the-clock maintenance work – and 'a thorough clean.'

The footbridge, which links St. Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London with the Tate Modern on the south bank of the Thames, will close from Saturday 14 October.

It will allow for the replacement of the synthetic membrane which separates the bridge’s steel structure from its aluminium bridge deck.

The bridge is one of five owned and maintained by the 900-year-old charity City Bridge Foundation.

If a Lime bike isn’t parked in a bay users won’t be able to finish their journey and will continue to be charged until they stop in a designated area. We asked Southwark Council if it was pursuing a similar scheme, but they did not respond at time of going to press.

Lime does already have measures to limit the impact of parked e-bikes on pavements, including fines for users who mis-park.

Hal Stevenson, Director of Policy for UK and Ireland at Lime said: “Lime operates a popular e-bike service in contract and

partnership with Southwark Council, as well as 11 other London boroughs.

"Our top priority is delivering long-term solutions that will maintain convenience for our 1.25 million London users, while helping ensure safe and tidy parking to prevent pavement obstructions, particularly for those with access needs.

“We ask all riders to park their bikes in a way that is mindful of other road users and future riders, and those that repeatedly park obstructively will be warned, followed by fines or a ban from Lime’s service.”

Unemployed actor Anthony Morton, 75, is attaching signs to the bikes saying ‘mobile litter bin’ - a reference, he says, to their tendency to attract rubbish in their front baskets.

He says Lime bikes are a “great nuisance” and hopes his crusade will prompt the company to “take responsibility” for the bicycles.

Anthony, who'd spent the day posting signs on bikes around Peckham and Camberwell, said: “You have to go round them and if you’re in a wheelchair or with a buggy they make it very difficult and people don’t think about this.”

He added that Lime should ensure there are designated zones where people can officially leave their bikes.

Anthony said: “Of course, people wouldn’t all [follow the rules] so you’d still get a few but it would be a step in the right direction.”

Some London boroughs have already taken that step. Lewisham Council, for example, is one of several London boroughs that recently announced it was working with Lime to introduce 300 Lime parking bays.

Charlie Brabon, 18, from Byron Drive, Erith, appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court charged with one count of murder on Wednesday, September 27.

Six others have previously been charged in connection with Kai’s murder and the shooting. A trial is scheduled for January 3, 2024.

Police launched their investigation after officers were called to Pembroke Road, Erith, at 8.50pm on Thursday, February 9, to reports of shots fired.

Emergency services discovered Kai suffering from a gunshot injury.

Despite paramedics’ best efforts, he died at the scene.

Enriko Spahiu, 21, of Elmhurst, Belvedere and Jalees Selby-Gangera, 18, of Woodfield Close, Erith were charged on Thursday, March, 9 with murder and attempted murder.

Connor Brooks, 21, of Horsa Road, Erith and Bradlee Reeve, 33, of Chapman Road, Erith were both charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder on Saturday, March 11.

Kai Osibodu, 23, of Riverdale Road, Belvedere was arrested on Friday, 17 March and charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Anthony Wallder, 20, of Eastry Road, Bexley, has been charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

On March 9, a 16-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and a 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

They have both been bailed pending further enquiries.

Local resident Ian Rankine says he's struggled to visit the shops since the LTN restrictions were introduced

By Herbie Russell Disabled Dulwich residents say their lives have been “spoiled” by restrictions preventing them from driving through the Village junction.

Pensioners in their seventies and eighties have claimed the Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) has made them more socially isolated and quadrupled journey times to their doctors.

Southwark Council said it had “carefully considered” allowing disabled Blue Badge holders through the junction but found it would be “dangerous” for pedestrians, wheelchair users and cyclists.

Local Campaign group One Dulwich has said the explanation was “clearly nonsense” and that the council had a “legal public duty” to defend disabled people’s interests.

One of those who claim to have been affected is Ian Rankine, 82, whose spinal problems and artificial hips mean he can’t walk further than 50 metres.

Having lived in Dulwich Village since childhood he says the restrictions have “changed his life for the worse”.

He said: “I came back to Dulwich Village after being evacuated during the war and have been here since I was about five. But now I can’t really go into the Village.”

Ian said traffic restrictions force him to take lengthy journeys around boundary roads to visit friends and do his shopping in the Village.

He added: “I don’t go out as much. I feel locked in and I’m saddened that

the council has decided to spoil my life a bit. It feels like everything is being stacked up against the elderly and the infirm.”

Southwark Council first introduced the controversial Dulwich Village LTN during the first Covid-19 lockdown which banned motor traffic through the junction. Restrictions were later lifted for emergency vehicles.

Since then, the council has also introduced exemptions for blue badge holders but only for the ANPR cameras around Dulwich Village. Blue Badge holders are still banned from passing through the junction itself.

As a result, many say they are forced to take circuitous around boundary roads to reach local amenities.

Ruth Lyon, who is in her 70s, suffers from a collapsed spine and has great difficulty walking, meaning she relies on her car to get around.

However, she says the Dulwich Village junction restrictions have quadrupled the amount of time it takes her to get to her doctor.

“I have difficulty walking - it’s like walking around with a bag of cement.

But I’m also very stooped while driving and when I get out it’s hard to walk,” she said. “The less time in the

car the better it is when I’m driving.”

Andrew Wallis, 77, suffers from congenital myasthenia, a condition that causes fatigue and musclewasting. He can only go outside accompanied by a respirator which he has inside his car.

Andrew said: “The car is my only means of independent outside locomotion. I can walk to the car but that’s only a very short distance.”

He relies on regular prescriptions from the pharmacy in the Village but can no longer get there himself.

Southwark Council briefly raised the possibility of redesigning the junction.

In April 2022, a council officer wrote to a local residents’ association saying “it is intended to completely reconfigure and redesign the junction to potentially allow vehicles such as blue badge holders”.

However, Cllr James McAsh has now told the News: “We carefully considered letting Blue Badge holders go through this junction but found that this would be dangerous for pedestrians, wheelchair users or cyclists that regularly use the junction.”

But he added: “We have one of the most comprehensive borough-wide exemption policies for Blue Badge holders in London.

“A number of our camera-enforced street space traffic filters permit Southwark Blue Badge holders through, with the exception of locations where it would not be safe to do so, like the Dulwich Village/Calton Avenue junction.”

In response to Cllr McAsh’s claim that Blue Badge holder access would jeopardise other people’s safety, a One Dulwich spokesperson said: "This is clearly nonsense because traffic lights enable pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles to take it in turns to safely cross the junction. It’s pure discrimination.

“What kind of society do we live in that puts the needs of its most vulnerable members last instead of first?”

In July, the Prime Minister ordered the Department for Transport (DfT) to undertake a formal review of LTNs.

They complained that this figure dwarfed the amount tenants in similar sized properties on the same estate were being asked to pay - just £1,377.48.

A Southwark Council officer said this was because leaseholders were paying for boiler maintenance the cost of which had sky-rocketed.

Meanwhile, only last month a leaseholder on the Canada Estate, Rotherhithe, said they expected they’d have to shell out £26,000 for recent major works.

This is despite the fact that residents have complained the refurbishment was carried out to a poor standard. Southwark Council has pledged to investigate the project further.

Southwark Homeowners Conference is a chance for people to learn about these and other issues.

There will be a range of guest speakers holding Q&A sessions including Southwark Council housing boss Darren Merrill, leasehold solicitor Andrew Brooks and property barrister Amanda Gourlay.

Various organisations will host information stalls including the charity Leasehold Knowledge Partnership, Citizens Advice and the Leasehold Advisory Service.

A man has been shot and three others arrested after residents reported hearing gunshots on a Peckham estate.

Police were called to Goldsmith Road, by the Oliver Goldsmith Estate, at 11.38pm on Monday, October 3.

They received reports of shots fired but found no victims or suspects at the scene.

Police said that later on, a man was admitted to a south London hospital with a gunshot injury to his leg. His condition was neither life-threatening nor life changing.

An estate resident who wished to remain anonymous said: “I’d just turned the TV off and was settling down to go to sleep when I heard screaming and shouting.

A police investigation is ongoing.

Sometimes, this arrangement can lead to confusion. The Southwark Homeowners Conference is a chance for residents to get to grips with their rights and responsibilities.

In 2023, Southwark homeowners have encountered numerous problems relating to their leaseholder statuses.

In March, leaseholders complained they were being “held hostage” by soaring utility water bills.

On the Brandon Estate in Kennington, leaseholders living in two-bedroom properties were being asked to pay £2,960.18 to cover heating and hot water.

New electronic health record system and app for patients and carers Guy’s and st Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital nHs Foundation Trusts have launched a new patient electronic health record system across their hospitals and community services. The new system, Epic, will improve ways of working and make the experience of patients and carers smoother, safer and more convenient.

Epic went live on 5 October and replaced many of the systems that were previously in use with a single programme. Patients may notice some changes at their appointments and in the communications they receive from their healthcare team. There may also be some delays with appointments and test results while everyone gets used to the new system.

An important benefit of the new system is MyChart - a new app and website that lets patients easily and securely view their health record on Epic using a mobile phone, tablet or computer. With MyChart, patients will be able to: • find test results and letters in one, easy place • get more time in appointments by telling their service what they need to know beforehand • save time travelling by having a video appointment

Children’s cancer centre proposal EVElIna lOndOn Children’s Hospital submitted a proposal to become the new Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) for south london and most of south east England.

The hospital believes it is uniquely placed to provide the best care, research and support to children and young people with cancer, and their families.

The pursuit of council homes - but at what cost?

t

his week’s special report has revealed that southwark Council seriously considered acquiring over 2,000 Aylesbury estate homes from the developer notting hill genesis (nhg). the fact the council even considered such a drastic move raises serious questions about the original deal.

But before asking those questions, it’s important to note that Southwark Council has faced a turbulent economic situation through no fault of its own. It signed its development partnership agreement (DPA) with NHG back in 2014 - before Brexit, before Covid-19, before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and before Liz Truss’s disastrous mini-budget.

In various ways, all these events have hurt the UK and global economies, causing borrowing and construction costs to spike. Clearly, housebuilding is considerably more expensive than it was back in 2014.

Therefore, it’s understandable that Southwark Council might want to change the terms of the DPA. And if, as it claims, it would have resulted in more social housing, that’s a good thing.

But while Southwark Council is right to “leave no stone unturned” in its bid to deliver the best Aylesbury Estate possible, you have to question why such a dramatic U-turn was being considered. If Southwark Council was so eager to scrap the deal on the table, how bad is it that deal?

Yes, it’s true that circumstances have changed. But shouldn’t multi-million-pound infrastructure projects be resilient to economic change? One of the most common arguments for public-private partnerships is that the private developer brings expertise which ensures projects are delivered on time. This regeneration has already been delayed four years until 2036. Now neither Southwark Council nor NHG will give an updated completion date - ignoring our inquiries about the deadline.

Also, if this deal had gone through, would it have been a good one for the council? Let’s not forget that this land recently belonged to Southwark. This deal would have meant the council selling off the family silver - only to buy it back a few years later. We’ve seen this sort of thing happen before in the case of Dulwich Hospital. That site was sold to a private developer only to be leased back to the NHS a few years later. This is exactly the sort of pawnshop economics Southwark Council shouldn’t be dealing in.

Despite this paper’s enquiries, neither Southwark Council nor NHG gave any indication of how much this deal would’ve been worth. We do know, however, that when Southwark Council bought 280 Aylesbury Estate homes off NHG in 2020, it cost £193 million - equivalent to £690,000 a home. Translate that to 2,000 homes, and the figures are astonishing.

For now, the deal looks set to stay put. Perhaps, over the next few years, the economy will improve and Southwark Council will reconsider taking over the development. If this means more social housing, then that’s great news. But can it do that without breaking the bank?

Far Far Away at the Elephant & Castle The Foreigners’ Panto, written and directed by Shani Erez, makes its world premiere at BOLD Elephant, a charmingly intimate theatre space in the very heart of London’s multicultural Elephant and Castle, writes Bella Christy.

The production centres around a group of immigrants who come together to perform their own version of a traditional British pantomime.

From Far Far Away, Dame Foreign and daughter Zara are making a home in the city of Londom (with an M), though Lord Villan, Mayer of Londom begins to make their lives rather challenging.

Both a heartwarming celebration of immigrants in the UK and a critique of their treatment, this production blends numerous genres. It unifies comedy, musical theatre, satire, pantomime and fairytales to demonstrate how a combination of differences can make a beautiful thing.

Act one is fast-paced and charming, it felt fresh and won the audience over with laughter almost immediately. The characters portray an endearing sense of awkward sweetness when playing ‘themselves’, and transform into quirky, distinguished personalities when taking on the roles in their

pantomime. I found the Lord Villain (Vikash Bhai) and his son, Benedict Cumberbatch (Suzy Kohane), particularly captivating.

Towards the end of Act one, the pantomime is disrupted as one of the immigrants receives a deportation letter, breaking the illusion of their characters. Initially impactful, it reminds the audience that the issues depicted on stage are far from mere entertainment. However, as the play progresses, this device is employed excessively, causing disruptions to pace and flow, and unfortunately, the second act began to lose me.

I find that most of the time, less is more, a critique which also translates to Zara’s breakdown scene. Her dramatic screeching did not make me feel the emotion I assume it was meant to. Despite this, John Constable’s song (performed by Gabriel Paul), began to pull me back into the piece. It cut through the comedy, bringing with it a serious tone without the need to break character. Remarks such as ‘I was born here but still need to prove I belong’ depict the difficulties of second-generation immigrants.

It wouldn’t be a pantomime without the obligatory audience participation, and I would say they did a great job.

A few classic ‘he’s behind you!’s’ and a dash of ‘oh no you didn’t’s’ went down a treat. The cast was engaging and playful, drawing us into the world of the panto.

The play appeals to all audiences.

As a white British-born individual I found the quips and critiques of the UK relatable and funny. Though sometimes I didn’t know whether to laugh at the jokes or feel shameful of some of this country’s bigoted tendencies.

Equally, my fellow theatregoer, son of two immigrant parents, resonated with certain aspects of the story and characters. Specifically, connecting with the portrayal of parental pride in their children's ambitions and achievements.

The Foreigner’s Panto was delightfully entertaining, however, I think it could do with some further refining to become a truly brilliant piece.

Tensions Picked Apart in The Island

South London is generously laden with local theatre spaces under railway arches with Union Street’s Cervantes Theatre specialising in works from Spanish playwrights, s Christopher Peacock...

This month we have a new play, The Island, written by Juan Carlos Rubio and translated into English by Tim Gutteridge getting a four-week run.

The Island is a tale of Ada and Laura, a lesbian Spanish couple in a hospital waiting room awaiting the fate of their son who is in theatre receiving treatment after a devastating accident.

Rubio’s script slowly drip-feeds us more and more backstory so that we get a fuller picture of this couple's relationship and what has led them to this anxious wait. It’s a study of the couple's relationship, picking apart the tensions that stem from being in a non-traditional Spanish relationship along with raising a child that has multiple additional needs. As the layers are pared back we learn of infidelity within the relationship and, although they may have seemed like a strong unit battling against the world together, the holes appear.

Jessica Lazar’s direction does a solid job of preventing this from being a rather

static duologue stuck on uncomfortable waiting room chairs. Rebecca Banatvala as Laura has less of the emotional breadth to work with compared to Rebecca Crankshaw’s Ada but both work hard to create a believable romantic relationship as the play delves further into society's judgement of couples with more significant than average age gaps.

The Island wants to tackle taboos of guilt in parenthood and does come with a disclaimer; however, there is plenty of room to add more questions to examine this to find truth.

The intimate Cervantes Theatre leads itself to these studies and pieces.

What we are offered uncovers a lot of nutritional areas of thought, from motherhood, religion and guilt but without going too much deeper. What we see in Rubio’s script is a tendency to lean more into convenient and slightly mundane relationship hurdles rather than getting to the bones of the more controversial content that would really give pause for thought.

When I researched my book Under Fire – Black Britain in Wartime 1939-1945, I made notes about Black Britons who were subjects of artists during the Second World War, writes Southwark historian Stephen Bourne...

For example, the Royal Air Force Museum’s archive has many beautiful portraits of African and Caribbean servicemen and women by the portrait painter Hon. Mrs. Honor Earl.

These include Ulric Cross, the Trinidadian RAF navigator. Tate Britain has in its collection a magnificent painting called ‘Survivors from a Torpedoed Ship’ (1942) by Richard Eurich. Based on fact, it shows a Black sailor helping two white sailors to cling, half frozen, to an upturned lifeboat. Eventually they were picked up but the Black sailor, who is unnamed, regrettably died.

Eurich was a painter who was known for his panoramic seascapes. He was appointed Official War Artist from 1940-45. From 1949 to 1968, Eurich was employed as an art teacher at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts.

Norman Hepple was a portrait painter who, at the start of the war, joined the Auxiliary Fire Service which, in 1941, became the National Fire Service.

He served as a fire fighter during the London Blitz but continued his painting.

Like Richard Eurich, he was also appointed Official War Artist and one of his finest achievements was a portrait of George A. Roberts. He was a Trinidadian who had served in the British Army during the First World War and then settled in Camberwell where he lived until he died in 1970.

It is likely that George’s First World War experiences on the battlefields of Europe, including the Somme, prepared him for the onslaught of the London Blitz.

When the Second World War began, George was too old for combat so he trained with the Auxiliary Fire Service.

His base was New Cross Fire Station and in 1943 he was made a section leader.

As a brave fire fighter, he faced constant danger throughout the Blitz. He put out fires and saved lives while the bombs fell and exploded.

In addition to his fire service duties, George was responsible for organising the Discussion and Education Groups of the wartime NFS. He realised that fire officers had time on their hands between air-raids and the discussion groups helped them to relieve the boredom and tension. As such, George met and befriended a number of prominent artists and writers including Norman Hepple, who painted his portrait.

In 1943 Hepple’s portrait was included in a pamphlet entitled Jim Braidy – The Story of Britain’s Firemen which paid tribute to wartime fire fighters who were subjects of war artists.

In 2018 the London Fire Brigade (LFB) invited George’s great granddaughter Dr Samantha Harding to unveil a red plaque in his honour at New Cross Fire Station.

Dr Harding has also acquired Hepple’s portrait of George and is planning to make the portrait available for the public

notable achievements was becoming, in 1925, the first woman of colour to broadcast on BBC Radio, three years after its launch.

With war clouds (and a Nazi invasion) looming over Europe, Evelyn came home to England and, in 1939, she began a long and very successful association with

protrait the BBC. During the war, she was one of the most popular singers on the Radio. She even had three Radio series of her own: Rhapsody in Black, Sweet and Lovely and Serenade in Sepia.

In 1946 she had her own BBC television series. Evelyn defied convention.

Though born into a West AfricanBritish middle-class family, she defied convention (and upset her strict Sierra Leonean father) to follow her dreams.

She became one of the most glamorous and charismatic entertainers this country has produced.

In 1942 her portrait was painted by Louis Ginnett, a well-known painter of portraits who lived in East Sussex, not far from the home of Evelyn’s mother.

In 2023 Evelyn was honoured with a Nubian Jak Community Trust/Battersea Society blue plaque outside her former home in Barnard Road, Wandsworth.

The recently refurbished Peckham Library has on display the splendid bronze portrait of the community leader Dr Harold Moody which was sculpted by his younger brother, the celebrated artist Ronald Moody.

Dr Moody’s home and surgery was in Queens Road, just a short walk from Peckham Library, so it is fitting it is on display there.

While Dr Moody was tending to the needs of the people of Peckham during the London Blitz, he was joined by Ronald who managed to escape from his home in Paris, France just before the Nazi invasion and occupation of the country. The bronze portrait mysteriously vanished but it was eventually rediscovered and in 2007, with the help of Harold and Ronald’s niece, Cynthia Moody (the curator of the Ronald Moody Archive), and myself, it was purchased by Southwark Council and given a permanent home in Peckham Library.

A copy of the portrait, also by Ronald, can be seen on display at the National Portrait Gallery.

Steatham’s Bourke, 29, had his 24-year-old Tanzanian opponent down with a body shot before the referee stepped in shortly after to end the contest.

Millwall fan Bourke, from Frank Warren’s stable, is now targeting a title before the end of the year, with British and Commonwealth bantamweight belt-holder Sean McGoldrick and European champion Thomas Essomba in his sights.

“I boxed way better than last time,” Bourke said. “I didn’t know much about the kid but he had a good record and I knew he could hit, so I just had to work him out and then go from there, really.

“It’s been frustrating, they’ve been trying to get me opponents but nothing was happening so I was a

well. But we just didn’t have those clinical edges in both boxes and that’s where we faltered.”

Hayrettin paid tribute to the away fans. “Amazing. Amazing. What can I say? I always tell the truth, amazing again, as usual - and we need to give them something.”

LEGENDARY GOALKEEPER Preston edwards has made an emotional return to dulwich hamlet.

Edwards, 34, has signed from Isthmian League Premier Division rivals Potters Bar Town after leaving the Hamlet in the summer of 2020.

Edwards has since had spells with Dartford, Brentwood Town, Braintree Town and Cheshunt.

Former Millwall goalkeeper Edwards initially joined Dulwich on loan before signing permanently from Ebbsfleet United in 2016.

Edwards was part of Gavin Rose’s squad that won promotion to the National League South in 2018 and he made 40 league appearances the following season.

Edwards is currently serving a threegame suspension, with one match remaining, and will become available for the league trip to Whitehawk on October 21.

“Delighted and excited about returning to Dulwich,” Edwards said. “This club means a lot to me. It’s not just about the football. It’s about the camaraderie, the community and the shared passion for the game with the supporters.

The hosts, who had lost six of their previous eight home games, took the lead thanks to Duncan Watmore before the Tigers flipped the match on its head with two goals in five minutes from Jaden Philogene and Adama Traore.

But Millwall fought back in the second half and equalised thanks to a fantastic goal from Joe Bryan, his first for the club.

It was largely a breathless match that saw both sides score at The Den for the first time since the infamous Blackburn Rovers clash last May. And there really should have been a fifth goal right at the end but Aidomo Emakhu missed a huge chance to cap the drama in south-east London.

It was ironic in some ways that Bryan – with a free-kick leading to the opening goal and the equaliser - had his most influential game on Saturday.

Injuries and the form of Ryan Longman had seen him spend more time than he would like on the bench but, with Longman not able to play against his parent club, Bryan started in back-to-back games for the first time since August.

His curling delivery from a free-kick from out wide caused chaos inside the Hull box with the ball eventually dropping loose to Watmore to slam home from close range after eight minutes.

The 29-year-old, who assisted Zian Flemming’s opener at Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday, appeared to hurt himself initially after hitting the advertising hoardings during his celebrations but proved to be fit enough to continue until half-time.

One moment of quality started it all off as defender Sean McLoughlin lofted a beautiful pass over the Millwall back four and Philogene sprung past Danny McNamara and Wes Harding. He calmly took the ball into the box and tucked it past Bartosz Bialkowski.

Things got worse just five minutes and this one was entirely self-inflicted.

the keeper and left his team exposed.

Philogene sped onto the ball on the edge of the six-yard box and put it back inside for the unmarked Traore to tap home. The Den was far from impressed and released a chorus of boos at half-time.

With Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Tom Bradshaw subbed on at the break and Millwall reverting to a back three, the home side came back to life.

Casper De Norre's rasping drive forced a save out of Ryan Allsop while Norton-Cuffy gave the crowd plenty of encouragement as he twice skilfully beat Philogene down the right.

But skill was not just reserved for just one wing-back as Bryan on the other side soon came into play. The former Fulham

man picked the ball up after 54 minutes, brilliantly evaded two Hull defenders in the box before sweeping the ball into the bottom corner.

It was Bryan's first goal in English football since he equalised against Manchester United at Old Trafford for alreadyrelegated Fulham and his first goal in the Championship since his extra-time brace against Brentford for the Cottagers in the 2020 play-off final at Wembley.

With the crowd screaming their side on, Hull on the retreat and Emakhu for the hosts and Aaron Connolly for the visitors introduced off the bench, more goals seemed guaranteed in a frantic contest.

Romain Esse, also subbed on, showed off some great footwork to release Emakhu on the edge of the box.

But he blasted his effort over and was unable to provide a fairytale ending to a game that deserved it.

Few would therefore begrudge Rowett some peace but in the blink of an eye, things will quickly get moving again.

Before the next international break in November, Millwall travel to a Preston North End side who currently sit third in the table, welcome Blackburn Rovers to The Den for the first time since the 4-3 defeat last season, face away trips to Watford and Sheffield Wednesday and take on a Southampton side who seem to have largely recovered from their dramatic September slump.

By the end of this run, it should be slightly clearer whether the Lions can challenge for a play-off spot again or if they are destined for a competitive scrap in mid-table.

The Championship, as ever, is incredibly congested around the middle and just six points separate third from sixteenth

position.

It means lose back-to-back games and a whole host of team will climb above you, but a few wins in a row might put you on top of an insecure and shifting mountain of teams.

Some clubs have refused to get involved in the shenanigans with recently-relegated Leicester City and newly-promoted Ipswich Town already leaving the rest of the league in their dust.

The Foxes have a ten-point cushion between themselves and third-place while the Tractor Boys are just two points behind them.

Once club football gets going again, there promises to be more drama, more incidents, and more goals at The Den and beyond in what is already a fascinating Championship season.

rowett to relax after hectic start to season

"Go home, do nothing for three days.

That's my plan for this week," he told reporters after the draw with Hull City.

"I think the train and the motorway have seen far too much of me in the past three months. So yeah, a bit of rest but certainly come back wanting to carry forward these two bits of performances and the four points we've had [against Plymouth Argyle and Hull]."

By Kiro Evans BYRON WEBSTER has credited two simple tips as being behind his career longevity.

The former Millwall star is still fighting it out in the National League with Bromley at the age of 36 and says he feels in tip-top shape.

The defender left The Den in 2019 after five years in south-east London.

He was part of the side who earned promotion to the Championship via a 1-0 play-off final win over Bradford City in 2017.

After short stints at Scunthorpe United and Carlisle, he found a new home at Bromley in 2020 after being convinced by Lions legend Alan Dunne, now assistant manager to Andy Woodman, to come aboard.

And despite the physical nature of life in the National League, Webster is relishing the prospect of another

promotion bid with the south London side thanks to his simple but effective fitness plan.

He told our paper: "My body's holding up well, I look after myself. We're just over two months into the season and we've already played fourteen games or something like and I feel good. We have great facilities down at Bromley.

The facilities and the staff are there to help me recover properly so no problems so far.

"For me, it sounds stupid, but it's all about drinking a lot of water. Drink a lot of water and make sure the muscles are right. A tip that someone told me to stop stiffness is make sure your hips and glutes are always released and loose and then you should be alright."

Even though he is still enjoying his football, Webster has begun looking forward to life after he hangs up his boots and speaks highly about the way former teammate Dunne has made the transition to coaching.

He said: "I've done a few coaching

Byron Webster won promotion with Millwall in the 2017 League One play-off final with a 1-0 win over Bradford City badges, I've done a few things like a mental health course, a nutrition course and a personal training course so I have a few strings to my bow.

"Dunney's fantastic. You play with these people as players but then to see them in management is crazy. Dunney obviously, and this is no disrespect to him, I never saw him going into management. Obviously, a fantastic player but now I see him day in and day out and he's the brains of it. He's the right-hand man to the gaffer, he does the analysis, he does most of the coaching, he's fantastic with the young lads. It was a shock for me to see, in a good way.

"I can't speak highly enough of Dunney for what he's done at Bromley.

He is fantastic."

Years on from leaving Millwall, Webster still remembers the club fondly and says the make-up of people behind the scenes is what made the Lions special to play for.

"If I'm honest it's from the backroom staff if anything. Obviously as lads, nine times out of ten you get on with everyone, and if you don't get on with them there's other lads there. But just at Millwall the people behind the scenes, the kitchen staff, the kitman ... everyone's in it. And like at Millwall, they were proper Millwall people. They loved the club. And I go back to success I had at clubs and Yeovil was the same.

There were Yeovil fans there.

"So when you go to a club and there's actual Yeovil people, Millwall people there, you have to buy into it. They breathe it and they live it. My son and my daughter still wear Millwall kits, they're fans of Millwall, they're still fans of Yeovil.

"You eventually buy into it and even now I'll look at the Millwall score [on a Saturday], the Yeovil score, they're the first scores I look at. So it becomes less of a job and more of 'I'm invested in this'. The actual club means something."

The Tartan Army top Group A after winning all five of their games, conceding only one goal in the process.

If they beat Spain in their next match, qualification to Euro 2024 will be secure. If results in other games go their way, they could even make it to Germany next summer regardless of events at the Estadio La Cartuja.

The Millwall striker, who has had limited game time in Scotland's qualifying games, believes his country's impressive form should not surprise fans.

He told our paper: "I think it's been built up over the last three, four years since the gaffer [Steve Clarke] came in.

I think it's just been a process. A lot of people are kind of shocked but from the inside we aren't really shocked by the progress we're making as a team and as a squad.

"We've had great results and it's now just about trying to get over the line in qualifying."

A hamstring injury he suffered against Hull City last weekend has ruled Nisbet, 26, out of the trip to Spain.

Elsewhere, five other Millwall players could be in action during the international break.

Tom Bradshaw has been called up to Wales' squad with the Dragons facing a huge Euro qualifier clash against Group D leaders Croatia.

George Saville will be trying to turn Northern Ireland's form around as they prepare for home games against San Marino and Slovenia in the same competition.

Following his last-minute winner last month against Turkey, Aidomo Emakhu will be hoping to be the hero again as Ireland's under-21s take on Latvia in a Euro qualifier.

Brooke Norton-Cuffy and England's under-21s host Serbia and travel to Ukraine for a Euro qualifying doubleheader, while Romain Esse and England under-19s face Montenegro, Wales and Austria in three Euro qualifying games.

By Kiro Evans Chin oKoli has revealed he's had to learn quickly to deal with crafty national league strikers willing to use any trick in the book.

The Millwall youngster is spending the first half of the season on loan at Bromley and has started every league game so far.

His partner at the back is former Lions player Byron Webster while the assistant manager at Bromley is Millwall legend Alan Dunne.

They have helped Okoli, who turned 20 last month, to grow as a player in what is an increasingly difficult league.

Okoli said that veteran strikers have tried every which way to throw him off his game but he has quickly learnt how to handle it.

He told our paper: "I think it's going

well. I think I'm improving every game and gaining a lot experience.

"It's a different physical test and as much as it is physical, it's also a good technical test. A lot of the teams we play against are very different. It's a very good step up and it's just what I needed.

"I think I've seen it all. There's stuff the strikers are doing that I didn't think happened. Pinching me and pulling parts of me I didn't know they could pull! It's tough but I love a battle with a striker and I feel like that's a good thing to have in my game."

Okoli's impressive adaption to the fifth-tier is the latest positive sign for a young player the Millwall coaching staff will be monitoring closely.

The centre-back was the captain of Millwall's under-21's eye-catching Professional Development League title win last season and he even scored the winning goal in the play-off final against Sheffield United.

He said the successful campaign was a huge confidence boost for him before he took his first steps into senior football.

"It was amazing at the time," Okoli said. "I didn't think it would be such a good turnout in terms of the fans and the amount of people who came out to watch and support. It was quite surreal.

And the amount of love I got, the messages, the tweets, it really boosted my confidence and helped me to kick on this season. So a thank you to the fans and everyone who sent me nice messages."

Okoli joined Millwall's under-11s and has been gradually advancing through the ranks. In a nice twist of fate, he plays alongside Webster, who won promotion with the Lions in 2017, and said he struggles to put into words how much the 36-year-old veteran has helped him.

He added: "There's certain stuff as a defender you can't just learn off watching games. You have to play or

speak with a player who's played so many games and as he's played so much across the leagues, he helps me in games, away from games and any time I've got a question he's just so helpful.

"He always gets his arm around me if I've made a mistake or he's the first one to congratulate me when I do something well. So it just breeds confidence in me and the rest of the team. He's one of the best centre-backs to be able to learn my trade off and play next to."

Okoli still keeps an eye on his parent club Millwall and says 18-year-old star Romain Esse is an "inspiration" for other academy players to look up to.

He said: "He's a terrific player. That's the type of player Millwall bring through the academy and push to the first team. I feel like that's an inspiration for players in the academy to look up to and think 'if he can do, why can't I do it?' It's good for him and he's a good role model to have for everyone else at the academy."

The 29-year-old opened the scoring for Millwall but appeared in discomfort after hitting the advertising hoardings during his goal celebrations.

Gary Rowett revealed after the match that the moment may have aggravated an issue that was picked up in the pre-game warmup.

Watmore was hooked off at halftime and now Millwall face an anxious wait to see what the scan results reveal about his knee.

Following the match, Lions boss Rowett said: "He was touch and go before the game. I think he felt something in the warm-up, he had to get strapped up and I nearly didn’t start him. But obviously at that point it would have classed as a substitution or whatever so I didn’t want to change it that late. And also he really felt it or re-injured it in the celebration. So yeah, probably should have taken him off at that point.

"I think it’s always difficult when you’re looking at a player saying ‘are you okay?’ and he sort of wants to stay on. I think that’s admirable but I think there’s also an element of you need to be able to run for the team. I think he just got through the first half but meant I just decided to take him off anyway just because I didn’t think he was quite alright."

Kevin Nisbet also picked up a hamstring injury in the match against Hull and will now miss Scotland's clash with Spain in their next European Championship 2024 qualifying game.

It is not yet known how serious the issue is.

Nisbet hurt his ankle last month against Rotherham United and, despite initial fears, only missed one game.
