Walworth clothes bank 'will be replaced' after 'it was set on fire'

A clothing bank in Walworth is being removed and replaced three weeks after a fire was started inside it and one pensioner said he was injured trying to clean it up himself.

Residents say the bank, which is used for clothes donations by the disability charity Scope, is often broken into by people wanting clothes.

"Someone started a fire inside it and all the mess has been on the corner of Balfour Street and Munton Road for the past three weeks," said Steve Lancashire, 74, who lives nearby.

He told us this means all the clothes end up ruined and the mess is causing a hazard to residents.

Since the fire, Steve said he and others have been asking local councillors and Scope to replace the bank with something more secure.

Having had no luck with either, he said he went to try and clean it up himself and got injured.

"At the weekend I went to shovel it and fell over into it," he said. "I gashed my head and had to have it medically checked for tetanus."

We asked Scope and the council for comment, and they responded by saying the bank would be removed shortly and a replacement provided early this week (Tuesday, September 5).

“We've had an unexpected delay to installation and are now working to confirm a new date with our textile bank supplier.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this has caused the community. We are also

disappointed this has happened, every kind donation given to our textile banks helps to fund disability equality charity Scope’s vital support services for disabled people and their families.”

Council wants your views on climate change

Southwark Council is asking locals to share their views on climate change as it draws up its Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation Strategy.

The draft strategy sets out its plans to protect communities, homes, infrastructure, and the environment from the physical impacts of climate change.

The strategy has already outlined plans to improve air quality, biodiversity and use flood alleviation schemes.

Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, Clean Air and Streets, said: “We must prepare for an uncertain future.

"We cannot sit back and wait for the worst to happen before taking urgent action to protect

local people – particularly the most vulnerable - from the real impacts of a changing climate.

“While significant work has gone on locally to strengthen our resilience including improved flood alleviation schemes and changes to planning policy, we need every corner of the community to get behind the strategy and provide their contributions to how we can better protect people and place”.

The consultation began on August 29 and closes on October 9, 2023.

A Southwark Council housing manager who freelances as a fashion photographer is putting on a charity show at the council’s headquarters.

Frank’s Cafe is located at the top of the Rye Lane multi-storey car park - also home to Peckham Levels - and topped a list featuring bars in Barcelona, Lisbon and Venice.

The trendy haunt, open since 2009, is renowned for its much-Instagrammed pink staircase and pretty cocktails.

The list was created by tourist guide ‘Big Seven Travel’ which wrote: “Take in 360 views of Peckham and beyond from Frank's Cafe – a relaxed rooftop bar on a multistorey car park.

“The power is in its simplicity, as well as its excellent, seasonal food. Their rooftop brunch is a local favourite, too.

“As well as great food, you’ll also find a wide range of drinks at decent prices – music to everyone’s ears in London.”

The building, which also contains the independent cinema Peckhamplex, has become a cultural hub that attracts visitors from all over the UK. Formerly the site of a Sainsbury’s, the building recently regained protected status, affording strong protections against any possibility of redevelopment for at least the next five years.

Robertson Egueye, 55, looks after 7,000 properties across Peckham and Dulwich.

But in his side hustle as a freelance photographer, he flies around Europe shooting fashion shows.

In collaboration with Danish fashion house House of Avida, Robertson is hosting a fashion show at the council's Tooley Street offices with proceeds going to charitable organisations Southwark Women’s Network and Community Fridge.

Robertson, who arrived in the UK from Nigeria 35 years ago, has worked at Southwark Council for 22 years.

Six years ago, looking for an outlet to escape the pressures of work, he started taking photos around Southwark.

Robertson said: “My job is highly pressurised. Being the area manager… meeting the expectations of people… you need something to wind down so I started doing street photography.

"I used to walk along Tooley Street at lunchtime and shoot people on the streets people - candid images and stopping people on the street.”

One day, he took a photo of a woman outside the Tate Modern who turned out to be hat designer Yuan Li. She liked his photography so much she

invited him to take photos at Royal Ascot where she was showcasing her hats, kickstarting Robertson’s career.

Since then, he has done fashion shows in Paris and Madeira - but now he wants to do something local.

Proceeds from the event will go to Southwark Women’s Network - a councilrun scheme helping female staff “realise their full potential”.

Money will also go to the Albrighton Centre’s Community Fridge - a service giving free essential food items to over 1,300 people each week.

Peckham-based fashion designer Gisella Boutique, who has featured at the V&A Museum and London Fashion Week, will have a stall at the event.

Founded by designer Bettina Pagh, House of Avida creates “high-quality, exclusive designs” inspired by “80s and 90s rock’n roll”.

‘House of Avida - Couture Meets Photography’ will be held at the Atrium, 160 Tooley Street, SE1 2QH from 6pm to 9pm on Saturday, September 16. Tickets cost €34 and are available online at Eventbrite.

Outrage as Ambulance bay outside Bermondsey retirement home replaced by e-bikes 'by mistake' Exclusive

By Isabel Ramirez An ambulance bay that serves a retirement home was mistakenly replaced by an e-bike and e-scooter bay four months ago by Southwark Council.

Residents of Keeton sheltered housing unit contacted the paper as they said were fed up being ignored about the cycle bay that has taken the place of an ambulance drop-off point.

The sheltered housing unit, which is situated just behind Bermondsey station, is home to 32 pensioners - many of whom are disabled.

Irene O'Brien explained: "About four months ago the designated spot for ambulances to park was changed to a scooter and cycle hire bay. What's even more stupid about it is the sign is still there saying 'ambulances only'."

She claims that they immediately got in touch with the council and later (June 1) got a response back saying it was a mistake.

In an email seen by this paper, a council officer admitted it was a mistake, commenting: "It has mistakenly replaced the ambulance bay. This should not have happened and I am resolving this as soon as possible. The bay should be located further down the road behind the ambulance bay."

Irene continued: "The council agreed to sort it out as soon as possible. But three months later nothing has been done."

Given the proximity to the retirement home, Irene said the bay was well-used before as residents require ambulances 'frequently.'

She cited a recent incident where a gentleman had a fall and it took nearly an hour to get him out of the home. "It took about 45 minutes," Irene claimed. "One of the reasons for this was because the paramedics

said they found it difficult to park."

Neil Coyle, Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP said: "It is a huge worry that the cycle path took over a patient ambulance drop-off point, disadvantaging older and disabled people. That should never have happened. But it is also a huge worry that the council admitted the mistake and agreed to move the bay months ago, but has failed to do so. This disappointing failure needs to be rectified as soon as possible."

In addition to this, another resident who wanted to remain anonymous said: "The scooters are all parked all over the road anyway so no one even seems to stick to the designated spot.

"A lot of us are disabled so the scooters and bikes are a real trip hazard for us."

Since we approached the council for comment on this story, the lines on the road have changed back to indicate it as an ambulance bay once again. However as the picture bottom right show e-scotters and e-bkies are still the bay despite the mistake being ratified.

Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, Clean Air and Streets, said: ”We regret the distress caused by the removal of the ambulance bay outside of Keeton Sheltered Housing Unit. We have taken immediate action and reinstated the ambulance bay. The cycle bays will be relocated to a more suitable location adjacent.

The bay has now been marked out correctly but e-scooter and e-bike users are still parking in the bay.

The boy who was thrown from the tenth floor of the Tate is preparing to go to school daily and is using a wheelchair less as he has made remarkable progress from last year.

The young French lad was just sixyears-old when Jonty Bravery, then seventeen, hurled him off the gallery terrace in August 2019.

The random attack left the victim suffering life-changing injuries, including a bleed to the brain, fractures to his spine and broken legs and arms.

This left the little boy wheelchairbound - but now after having made even more progress, his family say he "only uses his wheelchair for long outings."

In the latest update, which they regularly post on their GoFundMe page to keep donors aware of his progress, they explained that he can now 'bend down, squat, grab his toys and clothes without falling or dropping them.'

On their recent holiday, they say they noticed lots of improvements from last year - and their "little knight" even made it up a high rope course that had been adapted to his handicap.

"It's quite far from our home, but we try to go there as often as possible because our son loves it: he is indeed rediscovering the pleasure of an activity that he practised regularly before," the page reads.

The fundraising page was set up to cover the medical costs for the family and has now raised over €420,000 (£359,232). They said because he is now walking, although 'precariously' the family are rearranging the house to adapt to his 'new mode of travel.'

His family also reported that his memory is getting much better with him enjoying films again and recounting them afterwards.

They commented that they are "full of hope" to go back to school - which their son will now attend every morning, followed by rehabilitation and group care in the afternoon.

By Herbie Russell A man has been stabbed to death in broad daylight in the Myatt’s Field area - on the border between Camberwell and Brixton.

Bravery is currently serving a fifteen-year minimum prison term for attempted murder.

Meanwhile, Tate Modern has reopened the top floor of the Blavatnik Building - where the incident occurred

- to the public for the first time since the first COVID lockdown. It is also since the Supreme Court ruled it was a "nuisance" to luxury flat owners after they'd claimed the gallery offered an unwanted view into their properties.

Emergency services were called to Morrison Road at 12.08pm following reports of a stabbing on Monday, September 4.

Met Police officers and ambulance workers discovered a man in his early twenties suffering from serious stab injuries.

He was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedics' best efforts.

A crime scene was in place and no arrests have yet been made.

By Herbie Russell Southwark Council’s improvement works on the Canada Estate have gone £1.7 million over budget and seventeen months over schedule.

Furious residents have branded the project “a comedy sketch” and claim the quality of works is “terrible”.

Many said the delays and overspending were because the council paused works to consult residents on design features midway through the project, causing it to “haemorrhage” money.

Residents on the Rotherhithe estate are now demanding “transparency” and pushing for the project to be considered by the council’s scrutiny committee.

Southwark Council has acknowledged "that certain aspects of the programme may not have met expectations" and said it "understand[s] the calls for greater scrutiny".

QHIP on the Canada Estate

The Canada Estate works have been part of Southwark’s Quality Homes Investment Programme (QHIP) which aims to bring the council’s housing stock up to modern standards.

Improvements to the '60s-built Canada Estate have included window and door replacement, external decorations and asbestos removal.

However, the timescales and expenditure have not gone as planned.

Works began in October 2020 and were supposed to take fourteen months but were not completed until May 2023 - a seventeen-month delay.

Costs, much of which is covered by leaseholders, have risen from an original estimate of £4,837,276.02 to £6,573,525.00 as of July 2023.

Leaseholders have estimated they will pay a total of £26,000 each to cover the costs and many have already contributed thousands.

“Stop-start” works

Residents claim the delays, and increased costs, are because works “stopstarted” after the council decided to consult residents on design features once works were already underway.

Barry Duckett, Canada Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TRA) Chair, claimed: “The main reason for the delays is mismanagement and making decisions without consultation.”

Estate leaseholder Michael Robertson said: “Deciding to do these things before doing the consultation - it’s been like a comedy sketch of how not to deliver a major works programme.

"They haemorrhaged expenses halting works whilst engagement took place," he added.

For example, tenants and leaseholders claim the contractor started painting buildings magnolia only to discover residents wanted battleship grey meaning buildings are now a mishmash of the two.

Mr Duckett said: "The work that’s been done has not been done to our satisfaction and we are the clients."

Mr Duckett has also said works were paused while the council consulted on which new windows to install.

The decision to replace the existing windows was already unpopular given the new configurations don’t allow access to balconies.

When the council finally agreed to consult residents on the windows, they offered them just two near-identical options, Mr Duckett has claimed.

Residents have complained that, by restricting access to balconies, people

have struggled to clean their windows.

Columbia Point resident Pat Moriarty, 66, said: “We can’t keep clean the windows clean. You’ve got building work going on - you're going to get dust and everything. Who’s going to clean our windows for us?”

Mr Duckett said Southwark Council originally told him it was replacing windows due to a fire safety report making the recommendation.

A Southwark Council officer later sent an email admitting Mr Duckett had been “misinformed” and apologised.

The email continued: “I understand the Fire Brigade were kind enough to deploy an officer… there was no mentioned [sic] of windows being dangerous, neither was there a report form the London Fire Brigade provided”.

Estate residents have also complained the quality of the completed works have been inadequate.

People claim the tiles on landings have been left splattered with paint and that holes were cut in walks and shoddily covered up after.

Scotia Court resident Thora Foy claimed: “It went on and on and they left rubbish everywhere and they never offered to come round and clear up.”

Residents have also claimed their front doors were replaced just ten years ago and have questioned why brand-new ones have been installed. "It's terrible what's going on here," Mr Duckett said.

In October 2022, local discontent reached such a level that somebody graffitied the contractor’s compound

with angry messages.

Messages included ‘LBS (London Borough of Southwark) stop wasting our money’ and ‘Enough is enough no consultation’.

Residents also say the blocks were left covered in a dark netting that shrouded homes in darkness, forcing people to spend extra on energy costs.

The News repeatedly attempted to contact Durkan for comment.

"They don’t do transparency"

Estate residents have since submitted freedom of information requests demanding the council reveal its correspondence with contractor Durkan to establish what caused the delays.

But Southwark Council has rejected the FOIs, claiming they are “vexatious”, a decision upheld by Information Commissioner's Office.

But resident Michael Robertson is adamant the refusal is unfair. He said: “Our council wants to lead in a very controlling way so they don’t do transparency.”

In April, some residents formally requested the Canada Estate programme go before the scrutiny committee.

A scrutiny committee would question project decision making and performance. The News understands Southwark Council has not responded to the request yet.

Mr Robertson said: “If you’re a third over budget and two years behind schedule you want to put that to scrutiny."

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, the council's current cabinet member for homes and finance, said: "We understand the calls

for greater scrutiny of the issues raised.

However, it’s important to note that the committee responsible operates independently from the council, and we are unable to dictate their agenda."

Analysis: The tip of the iceberg?

Residents’ growing dismay with the quality and speed of works on the Canada Estate will pile pressure on a struggling housing department.

Southwark Council’s housing chief Michael Scorer resigned last month for “personal reasons” meaning the department is missing an experienced head at the helm.

Making matters worse, Mr Scorer had recently made the shock admission that the council couldn’t meet its 11,000 house-building target.

The QHIP programme has also been mired in controversy. Bermondsey's Kirby Estate residents claim windows bought for their homes through the programme - costing £1.3 million - had made their homes draughty and caused black fungal growth.

Southwark Council refused to review the works for years but in July, residents finally convinced it to reinspect the works.

Furthermore, the council has announced that, due to new building and fire safety regulations, the QHIP programme is under review.

It is currently unclear whether, and how much, this could add to the already mounting QHIP bill.

Underpinning this is the uncomfortable fact that, in the last financial year, Southwark Council took £6.7 million from its housing revenue account (HRA) reserves, bringing the fund to its “lowest ever point”.

Cllr Cryan has insisted the council retains “a firm grip” on its finances.

But critics argue this is contradicted by the council’s Policy and Resources Strategy report which admits there’s “limited scope within the HRA to absorb ever-increasing demands”.

hundreds of kids flock to legoland as part of free camberWell holiday club

By Isabel Ramirez a caMBeRWell-BaSeD charity, that hosts a free summer-long holiday club across thirteen centres, took hundreds of kids to legoland, many of whom had never been outside of london before.

Spring Community Hub is a charity that runs a food bank and a five-week free holiday club, across its thirteen centres.

CEO, Felicia Boshorin said: "We started our holiday club so no child in Southwark should go hungry through the holidays. The cost-of-living crisis

has made things harder, with many still struggling to get on their feet from the effects of the pandemic."

The kids do the first hour online which is usually a fitness class, and then they attend one of the centres for three hours in the afternoon.

There are centres spread across the borough, including one for children with special educational needs.

Cassie Nichols, Outreach Coordinator, said: "People can attend whatever centre fits their needs or is closest to them. Everyone gets lunch and we put a lot of activities on."

As well as the kids, parents also receive food whilst attending the

centres and they are given parcels to take home from the food bank.

Now at the end of the holidays, Cassie said she's pleased with how the summer's gone.

This year the holiday club involved day trips to Legoland and Walton-OnThe-Naz - where around 300 children and their parents got to escape London or play in the sea for the first time.

"We know lots of these kids can't leave London so we want to be able to give them a new experience."

Fifteen-year-old Sophie Wilkinson goes to the teenager's group and said she really enjoys going.

"We do things like drama, sports,

games, and we also go on day trips."

She said the trips were fun, commenting: "We wouldn't have had the chance to go if it wasn't for the play scheme."

Her mum added: "They drive me mad asking to go to Legoland all the time but we could never afford it. So it's great they were able to go."

The funding they receive is largely from grants from the Department of Education and Southwark Council, but this only covers the daily summer club.

Felicia commented: "We didn't have funding for these trips - we had to campaign for the money and top some of it up with our own because we really

wanted as many children as possible to have a chance to come."

"Some of the families didn't get to come and we understand the disappointment that might have caused. But because of this we could not afford to take everyone, so we had to have rules for who came - it had to be the people who consistently came to the group and were correctly registered."

She added: "I hope in future we can get more funding, so everyone will get to go."

tWo South london men who supplied falsified passports to fugitive criminals have had their jail terms increased after the court of Appeal said the original sentences were "unduly lenient”.

At around 10.25pm on Sunday, August 6, a man boarded a northbound Northern Line tube at Kennington.

While onboard, the victim approached another man, who’d also boarded at Kennington, to ask whether he was on the right train.

But the man reportedly sexually

assaulted the victim, before moving to another carriage and disembarking at Golders Green.

British Transport Police (BTP) believe the man pictured may have information that could assist their investigation.

Anyone who recognises him, or has any information, is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 2300092243.

Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Anthony Beard, 61, and Christopher Zietek, 67, both of Sydenham, received six and eight years’ imprisonment respectively last May. But their sentences have been raised, Beard from six to ten years and Zietek from eight to twelve years after the Court of Appeal ruled they were "unduly lenient" on Friday, August 25.

National Crime Agency (NCA) Regional Head Jacqueline Beer said: “The increase in their prison sentences adequately reflects the severity of their offending and the harm it did in the UK and beyond.”

Beard and Zietek worked together to provide 'fraudulently-obtained genuine passports' to criminals looking to evade justice.

The NCA investigation found that Beard would find vulnerable people who looked similar to their clients and convince them to sell their expired passports.

He would then use their details and passports to apply for new versions but with photographs of his clients.

Zietek, formerly known as Christopher McCormack acted

as a broker, using his criminal connections to reach clients.

Customers paid between £5,000 and £20,000 for the “golden ticket” documents.

A third member of the gang, Alan Thompson, 72, from Surrey, would chauffeur Zietek to criminal meetings.

He was sentenced to three years imprisonment in May and his jail term remains the same.

ormAlly, pArEntS look forward to kids going back to school but this year that excitement has turned into a nightmare due to disastrous oversight of school buildings and maintenance since 2010.

The Tory and Lib Dem Coalition immediately scrapped Labour’s ‘Building Schools for the Future’ programme in 2010 and have wielded the axe over education and opportunity ever since.

Now schools, children and parents are fearful of the impact with schools in some areas closed due to the fears of substandard concrete.

I am told by our Local education

Authority that no school is affected in the borough thankfully, although one faith school is undergoing additional checks to be absolutely sure.

Parliament is also now back too after a summer which saw: the Government’s literal flagship, the ship for asylum seekers, sunk by legionella disease; crime and antisocial behaviour soar; waiting lists for NHS treatments reach all-time records and the public left wondering if the Government could be trusted to run anything properly.

I’ve got a busy return to Parliament to try and hold Ministers to account. Some see which way the wind is blowing and have already announced resignations.

MP for Bermondsey & Old Southwark overturned a massive 20,000 majority with a 23 per cent swing from the Conservatives may have helped some make up their minds to quit at the next election rather than face voters’ wrath.

I used the parliamentary break to engage further locally and always enjoy the love, support but also the frank and robust exchanges I get on the doors in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, and Borough!

One issue which has been a major concern raised countless times is antisocial behaviour.

Under the Tories, police cuts and the virtual scrapping of PCSOs led to a dramatic increase in some crimes and antisocial behaviour across Southwark.

There are still fewer police officers

and PCSOs in Southwark than when David Cameron took power aided and abetted by Lib Dem, Nick Clegg.

The current Government still excludes fraud and IT crime in their statistics – just another example of the Tories cooking the books and fudging the figures sadly.

Ministers’ failures have a damaging impact on local people though, and I always encourage people who raise concerns to report all issues online at: www.met.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/ how-to-report-a-crime/ or use the 101 helpline as well as 999 in emergencies.

It’s crucial to report crime and antisocial behaviour. The police will not allocate resources

to areas affected if there is no record of problems in an area.

Gove's angry letter to Southwark Council is hypocritical - and everyone knows it

M

ichael Gove has written to Southwark Council slamming its treatment of council tenants. We don’t deny that the council must improve, but the housing secretary’s hypocrisy is unforgivable.

In his letter to the Council CEO Althea Loderick, Gove said he was “appalled” by four different cases where the Housing Ombudsman found Southwark guilty of maladministration. The cases are certainly shocking; a pregnant woman left in the cold for six months, a tenant wrongly accused of criminality.

But let’s consider who wrote this letter, or at least ordered somebody else to write it. Michael Gove is one of the architects of austerity and has presided over some of the most devastating cuts to public services, including local government funding, in modern political memory.

However, what really wrangles isn’t the fact that Gove has highlighted housing issues, but the manner in which he’s done it. In his letter, he offers zero solutions and completely fails to acknowledge how his government’s policies have fuelled the crisis.

What’s even more astonishing is that the letter follows almost exactly the same formula as one sent to Lambeth Council in August. Some of the phraseology, like that about “taking a personal interest” is distinctly similar.

A quick look on the government’s websites shows he sent at least seven of these letters to local councils in August alone and we know that number is now more.

From the looks of it, Gove and his team are so bereft of ideas for fixing the housing crisis, that they’ve literally resorted to spamming council CEOs. One can picture a bleary-eyed parliamentary assistant lifting his head from a keyboard; “which cash-strapped public authority shall we attack now, boss?”

Don’t be fooled, these letters are political manoeuvres and little more. Of the eight authorities the News knows to have received letters, six are Labour-run, one is under no overall control, and another is run by independents. Not a single Tory-run council has been targeted.

Gove knows full well that the biggest social landlords, and those struggling with threadbare housing budgets, are likely to be Labour-run. With a London mayoral election next year, and a general election on the horizon, the letters are cynical acts of political posturing.

Southwark Council desperately needs to improve its processes, to ensure the most vulnerable residents aren’t left to suffer in grim living conditions. Meanwhile, Gove would do well to snap out of his wilful amnesia, and recognise his party's cuts to local government are a big part of the problem.

Lions Food Hub founder Kelly Webster has called on the government to copy France and introduce price caps on essential food items.

During a visit to the award-winning Lions Food Hub next to the Den, the News found many service users were carers for their disabled adult children.

Often unable to hold down full-time employment alongside their caring responsibilities, most are entitled to a carer’s allowance of £76.75 per week.

But many say this doesn’t cover their living expenses, especially with food prices having risen by 15 per cent in the last year.

Angela Taylor, 55, from Peckham, said she was a full-time carer for five people including three adults with various disabilities, and her two grandchildren.

Describing caring as “a full-time job”, she said the cost of food was easily her biggest daily expense.

“Everything’s gone up - bread, sugar, milk, flour. It’s all gone up. I usually find I’m worst off at the weekend so it’s perfect being able to come here on Friday,” she said.

Her husband Mick said the food bank had been “a lifeline”.

Their struggles are backed up by the latest statistics. The price of food and nonalcoholic drinks rose by 14.9 per cent in the year to July 2023.

Between April and June 2023, the cost of dairy items, including cheese, milk and yoghurt, rose by over 20 per cent.

There were 15 per cent rises over the same period for products including water, crisps, chocolate, juice, cakes, cereals, bakery items, and fish.

European countries including France and Hungary have struck deals with food retailers to cap the price of essential items.

There were rumours that Rishi Sunak was considering similar measures. But in June, the Telegraph reported that the Prime Minister had abandoned the possibility.

Another woman, who wished to remain anonymous, was a full-time carer for her 31-year-old son who has mental disabilities.

She receives the carer’s allowance and income support but after paying out for electricity and rent, she said she was left with just £70 a week.

Once again, food was her biggest worry.

“It’s ridiculous. Even Tesco's and Asda’s own brands have gone up so much,” she said.

She used to rely on discounted food reaching its sell-by date but says even this is unaffordable now.

“Before, they would reduce from £3 to £1.50 but now they only reduce by 10p.

That’s not a big saving,” she said.

She’s been visiting the food bank ever since it was founded during Covid-19. "I don’t think I could have survived… if it wasn’t for them,” she said.

Food bank founder Kelly Webster, 47, kick-started the service with her wife Ellen Webster in January 2021 - during the Covid-19 winter lockdown.

It began as a small operation serving around a dozen families at the Rennie and Manor Tenants Hall on Galleywall Road.

Millwall FC later agreed to let Kelly operate the hub from the Millwall Community Trust building on Bolina Road, outside the ground.

The club also allowed the team to set up a donation kiosk on matchdays where fans donate food and money. The hub now supports over 60 families.

Award for her work, said: “I’ve always wanted to give something back because I’ve been homeless myself and been through a lot of issues my life.”

She insists a cap on essential groceries would prevent people from falling into food poverty.

“Categorically, every item on the shelf is double the price of what it was two years ago,” she said. “All the big bosses at supermarkets - not one of them wants to put a cap on essential items.”

But it’s not carers feeling the pinch. “It’s so mixed. It’s every race, every religion, young, old,” Kelly said.

Esther Falese, a full-time mum to her two children, has been visiting the hub since July. Asked what was the hardest thing about the cost-of-living crisis, she said: “Everything - electricity, rent - it’s not easy.”

This paper also spoke to Mary, 50, a hairdresser from Peckham. She took time off work to be treated for multiple sclerosis

which eventually meant she missed out on furlough money during lockdown.

She was forced to pawn her jewellery to afford living costs. “I ended up losing it all other than one necklace that I kept because my dad bought me it for my eighteenth and I’m giving that to my daughter,” Kelly said.

In May last year, Kelly Webster won the prestigious PFA community award for the third year running, thanks to her work at the food bank.

She said at the time: “There is still so much work to be done in the community, with the cost of living going up and up.

“We continue to keep raising money to help feed as many people as possible while also promoting the right to food as I believe no one should go hungry."

Vintage photographs reveal Peckham's Victorian department store that rivalled Oxford Street

The collapse of Debenhams, and House of Fraser’s steep decline, have shown how department stores have fallen out of favour in recent years.

But 150 years ago the department store was a revolutionary concept and one in Peckham eventually rivalled the shops of Oxford Street.

Introducing the Jones & Higgins Department Store. It opened in 1867 as a single store but, over the following 30 years, grew to encompass much of the high street, and become a Peckham landmark.

Bold Beginnings

In 1867, six years after Prince Albert’s death, two cloth merchants trading on Rye Lane decided to join forces and attempt a joint venture.

Higgins and Edwin Jones rented a twelve square-foot premise at 3 Rye Lane. They were humble beginnings for the pair, who moved their families into the shop to save money. But they’d recognised Rye Lane’s potential.

For years, Peckham High Street had been the area’s principal commercial thoroughfare. By the 1860s, plans were being drawn up to widen the high street.

This would have the effect of opening Rye Lane up to more through traffic which eventually became the area’s dominant shopping parade.

Having had the foresight to buy premises on this fledgling commercial hotspot, Jones and Higgins were soon reaping the rewards. By 1876 they occupied 3 to 13 Rye Lane and fourteen years later, in 1890, even more shops were being acquired.

Henry Jarvis was later commissioned to design the new building being built at the junction with Peckham High

Street. By 1894, 62 Peckham High Street became the clock tower building. Based on a clock in Venice’s Piazza San Marco, it's now an iconic part of the Peckham cityscape.

A Roaring Trade

The Jones & Higgins Department Store quickly gained an excellent reputation and began providing real competition to the shops established on Oxford Street.

In a presentation for Peckham Heritage available on YouTube, local Historian Nancy Coleman-Frank said: “The store became legendary, maintaining its reputation for honourable trading, courtesy to customers and value for money.”

Among the shops were an ironmongery department, a carpet shop, a delicatessen, a furniture store, and a glass and china department.

Although normal to modern shoppers, the idea of providing such an array of

services, along with basic amenities like toilets, was revolutionary and kept people shopping for longer.

Shareholders were also able to foster a sense of community with popular events like fashion shows and Santa’s grottos. People who grew up in Peckham in the 60s will fondly remember teas, luncheons and Christmas shows, which were held until 1966.

However, postwar economic changes started casting the viability of high streets in doubt as out-of-town shopping centres shifted the balance away from inner-city competitors.

Peckham also struggled with high unemployment and a lack of economic opportunities in the ‘70s, meaning people had less disposable cash. The Jones & Higgins Department Store closed its doors in 1980.

meaning only the Victorian HSBC bank building and the clock tower building, with its elaborate Renaissance-style detailing, were retained.

Some of the building was later taken over by the Peckham Palais nightclub which also closed around ten years ago. On the ground floor, there is currently a Costa coffee store.

The Victorian Society lists the Jones & Higgins Department Store as one of its top ten most endangered buildings.

But despite the efforts of Nancy Coleman-Frank, Historic England has refused to consider giving the building listed status saying it lacks “special architectural and historic interest”.

No council-run schools Gove 'appalled' by Southwark in Southwark affected Council's 'poor response to

by RAAC concrete The council have now confirmed that no schools that it runs in Southwark have the dangerous concrete prone to collapse, which is halting the start date of some in the UK.

Parents across the UK were worried after news broke of the need to remove concrete that 'could suddenly collapse' from school buildings.

Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) is a lightweight building material used from the 1950s up to the mid-1990s but is now assessed to be at risk of collapse.

Despite mounting pressure, the Government has refused to publicly reveal the 104 facilities that have been told to shut buildings and from the lists that media outlets have compiled three schools in South London have been affected.

Following questioning by the News to the council, they have now confirmed that no council-run schools in Southwark have been affected.

The council runs most of the primary schools and other further educational and nursery facilities, but independently-run schools like academies are not managed by them. If any of these school are at risk, it will be made clear by the much-anticipated list from the Department of Education.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Refugees, said: “I know how alarming the current national news about the safety of school buildings has been for parents and teachers across the country, and I want to reassure Southwark families that we have carried out comprehensive checks of our schools.

"I am very pleased to confirm that no reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete has been found in any of the 45 nurseries, schools and other educational establishments that Southwark Council maintains."

She continued: "I would like to take this

opportunity to thank my team and our schools for being proactive and working hard to make sure our schools are safe for our children and young people, teachers and school staff.”

More than 150 schools in England and Wales have been told to fully or partly close because they are fitted with RAAC. As a result, some schools have been forced to delay the start date of term.

On Thursday, the Department for Education said it had contacted a further 104 schools after 52 of the 156 educational settings containing the concrete took protective steps so far this year.

As one of the schools in South London to have been found with RAAC concrete, Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School in Brixton made plans last month to move 200 junior pupils into an alternative site ready for starting back this week (Monday, September 4).

The school issued a statement saying it would be necessary to relocate the pupils to allow the structural work to be undertaken on their junior site over the next few months without disrupting children’s learning.

Temporarily, they have been moved from the Trent Road site to two 'self-contained blocks' at St Martin in the Field Girls School, in Tulse Hill.

A spokesperson from the school added: "The school’s priorities will always be to maintain the safety of the children and staff and to maintain the continued education of the children."

The Link School in Beddington, Croydon, is listed as temporarily closed but the school is said to reopen next Monday.

In Eltham St Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive is reported as open but parts of the hall, gym, canteen, drama studio, alps and girls' and boys' toilets are closed. The BBC said that the school need to open mobile toilet blocks.

According to the BBC, a full list of the schools affected is set to be released by ministers 'this week.'

By Herbie Russell Michael Gove has said he is “appalled” by Southwark Council for leaving a pregnant woman without heating for six months, among other cases.

In a letter to council CEO Althea Loderick, the housing secretary slammed the local authority, saying its response to complaints “fell well below the standards residents should expect”.

Gove sent a similar letter to neighbouring Lambeth Council on August 16, saying it had "failed... residents yet again”.

But the Housing Secretary has drawn criticism for the letter to Southwark, with Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle branding Gove a "hypocrite".

While agreeing that Southwark Council "must improve and fast", he said the Conservatives had "taken millions from every council’s budget" since 2010.

Gove's letter to Southwark Council highlighted four separate cases where the Housing Ombudsman found the Labour-run council was guilty of “severe maladministration”.

Residents were left in damp, mouldy and leaky flats, with one wrongly accused of vandalising their own home.

Southwark Council was ordered to pay over £11,000 in compensation across the four cases.

In his letter, Gove continued: “You must treat all tenants with respect and dignity. I will be taking a personal interest in how your organisation delivers its responsibilities.”

Southwark Council had already apologised "unreservedly for the distress caused to these families by our actions and processes" and vowed to

improve its services.

Southwark's opposition Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain has said Southwark Labour is “failing to provide the safe, good quality housing that everyone in our borough deserves".

But he also criticised the Conservative government saying it had "recklessly cut local government funding, leaving vital housing services under-resourced and vulnerable".

The first of four ombudsman cases Gove highlighted saw a pregnant woman “left without heating for six months in the coldest period of the year”.

The ombudsman’s report said: “The landlord’s complaint responses were delayed, did not address the concerns of the resident, did not follow its own complaint policy and were issued without any apology or empathy.”

Another case found Southwark “unfairly dismissed” a family’s pleas to move out of the leaky flat despite an NHS trust warning about its “extensive mould and damp”.

The third case, published in July, criticised the council’s handling of a resident’s request for a copy of a service charge final bill after major works.

The fourth case, also in July, saw Southwark Council wrongly accuse a man of vandalising his kitchen and then refuse him a property exchange.

Southwark Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain said: “Southwark Labour are failing to provide the safe, good quality housing that everyone in our borough deserves.

Even the government has now felt the need to step in and publicly criticise their record.”

But he also noted that the “Conservative Government has recklessly cut local government funding, leaving vital housing services under-resourced”.

Disabled Rotherhithe woman says she sleeps in armchair after rats chewed through her bed frame

An arthritic Rotherhithe woman says she is being forced to sleep in an armchair after rats chewed through her bed frame.

Lisa Hartshorn, 51, said her home has been infested with rodents for two-anda-half years but housing association Clarion hasn't moved her out.

Clarion has said Lisa’s case “does not meet the requirements for rehousing” but it was working to get the situation “resolved as soon as possible”.

Lisa also suffered a catastrophic car accident in March. Fighting tears, she said: "I can't live here anymore. I'm sorry to be dramatic but I moved in here nine years ago. This was my forever home. I haven't got nothing now."

She added: “It’s ruined my life. It’s disgusting... I’m so sorry about the smell. Everybody can smell rat p*ss."

Lisa, who has arthritis in both knees and spine, first moved into her disabledaccessible flat when it was built roughly

nine years ago.

But two-and-half years ago Lisa, says the flat was hit with a mouse infestation, and eight months later, she says rats arrived.

Lisa says her flat is located above the communal bin room and believes this is the cause.

She says the rodents have chewed through her bed frame, forcing her to sleep in an armchair despite her spine problems. “It’s crucifying me,” she said.

Lisa says her home is covered in droppings, causing her illness including persistent vomiting and diarrhoea. She said: “I’m sick all the time. I’ve lost so much weight. I’ve lost a stone in two weeks.”

To make matters worse, Lisa suffered a car accident in March which saw emergency workers resuscitate her twice.

Her injuries included a ruptured spleen, a bleed on the brain, a broken pelvis, knee and pubic bone, eleven broken ribs, eight facial fractures and several missing teeth.

Lisa says she has asked Clarion to move her out, preferably to Kent so she can be closer to her family.

But she claims Clarion has refused her requests. She also says she has been taken off Southwark Homesearch - the council’s housing bidding system - but doesn’t know why.

A spokesperson for Clarion said: “We appreciate how unpleasant pests can be for residents and this area seems to have a high rodent population.

“Our pest control contractor has carried out comprehensive proofing of the flats and communal areas in the building as well as ran a full baiting programme which seems to have largely resolved the issue.

“Unfortunately, it seems that Ms Hartshorn is the only home reporting a rat issue, so our team is trying to arrange an urgent visit to survey the drains of her property to formulate a suitable plan “Although this is an understandably unpleasant situation, we are working to get it resolved as soon as possible.

“Ms Hartshorn’s case does not meet the requirements for rehousing, so our local team has been trying to contact her

Getting Wobbly in Walworth I think I might have just read the best book I have read for years, a book that I threw in the bin on page seven because of its grotesque dive into a murky ocean of abominable gorging, but fished it out because I knew this book had something different. I’m glad of that, writes Michael Holland.

Escape From the Golden Hinde

Simon Rumley’s The Wobble Club tells the story of Gill and Brolly, two 40stone+ people who love each other dearly. Their love for each other is one that most people could only dream about, but this romance is as equally horrific as it is hilarious. Not, though, a horror that makes you check the doors and windows, no, because this horror is happening just along the street and to others. Or is it?

The horror hits when you recognise the signs of food addiction within yourself; the horror is the book becoming a mirror that you don’t want to look into but you can’t stop yourself.

Which is how I came to be rescuing The Wobble Club from the trash.

On the other side of the darkness is the hilarity, but this is funny stuff you shouldn’t be laughing at because when you realise you’re laughing at someone else’s misery you then want to cry for your own.

If you don’t recognise yourself you will recognise others. And if you live in South East London you will know the pubs and streets in the book, or similar streets where a chicken or burger shop sizzles under neon lights every few yards; where a glut of fast food outlets has affected the health of the nation.

Almost every paragraph deserves to be read out loud. The words shock, they soothe, they suck you in to their oleaginous world of a junk food diet and spit you out into a rain-sodden gutter in SE17.

The Wobble Club all takes place within a two-mile radius of the Elephant & Castle with the author virtually bringing the place alive with an excess of eyebrow-raising similes: 'ominous sentiments gnaw like ravens in a quagmire of corpses’; colleagues ‘huddled like a sports team for terminally unfit

turnips and did its best not to flinch at Gill’s breath, which smelled like a sweet factory worker’s vomit’… Big knickers in a drawer are likened to ‘dying stingrays’. Egregious phrases that demand you read them again and read them to others to see if they are as shocking to them as they are to you.

There are shower scenes, bedroom scenes, and pub scenes, but not one of them fits into what we expect from those tried and tested favourites. Every chapter provides another surprise, another shock, another section that has to be reread to make sure you got it right. Some characters are introduced and discarded within a page or two. You hope that the nice ones return.

This is a first novel but follows on from a very successful and awardwinning film-making career where Rumley became known for, let’s say, being an outsider who worked unconventionally. He has written and directed several films that deal with the darker side of humanity, films where you can never predict

The Golden Hinde has sailed around the world twice, once in 1570 and again 400 years later, but now it is in danger of being ripped apart by the ghost of its most famous captain, Sir Francis Drake. Visitors are invited aboard to solve the mystery that jeopardises the safety of the ship and ensure its future safety, writes Michael Holland.

Our trio of matelots were piped aboard by two dodgy-looking seamen who you wouldn’t trust with your mum or your rum, but they shared some good tips with us about health and safety and provided us with some clues to look out for as we made our way down through the decks to get to the bottom of the mystery, all the

while working like press-ganged sailors.

In cramped quarters we found ourselves problem-solving a maze of astrological signs, a thousand keys and locked treasure chests that could move our quest onwards. Whenever the crew

think you are not making progress at a steady rate of knots they appear from nowhere and suggest ways to help you advance - assistance that was much needed.

Working with maps, ropes, hitch knots, pulleys and magic mirrors we

thought we were doing quite well, but when we heard the screams of people seemingly being made to walk the gangplank we wanted to turn back. We were advised to ignore it and carry on…

Creeping hesitantly down to the next deck we encountered Drake’s

what is coming next. He analyses people and their relationships, probing the unseen and unspoken minutiae of their lives. He makes films about lives disintegrating with little respite from the unremitting misery.

Rumley creates a feeling of unease when there should be none; he doesn’t want you to get comfortable but when you do a mind-altering shock is sure to follow.

Just as there is a Rumley way to make films, I predict that, if there is a second book, we will see a Rumley style of writing.

I’ve not been able to eat a Cadbury’s Wispa since reading The Wobble Club… If you know, you know.

ghost who pleaded with us to save his spectral soul, but another phantom appeared to tell us of Drake’s evil ways and implored us to leave him to rot in the hell he deserved. It is the choice you make here that is important to completing the quest you are on.

Choose wisely…

We chose wisely and soon found ourselves in a disco where rum was served and a puppet show helped us work out how to decode another map.

Bolstered by rum-induced euphoria, we boogied beneath the glitter ball for a while and then strode onwards.

More terrifying screams were heard, and a shipmate said we had only a few minutes to solve the secret of the Golden Hinde before it was destroyed and sent to the bottom of the ocean.

With our next clue, we worked hastily to establish our coordinates at the Captain’s table with the Captain’s log.

Sea water was dripping on us, time was running out, would we solve the final conundrum to save the ship and all who sailed in her?

Essential information for all those starting secondary school next year

Open days are due to take place, but make sure you know what is what

Each year the challenge of deciding on which secondary school to apply to for your child remains one of the biggest education decisions for parents and carers...

You can’t expect to name a secondary school and assume that your child will automatically be offered a place. It is simply a case of listing the schools you prefer and awaiting the outcome of the allocation process.

It is vital that you get the order of preferences right on your child’s primary to secondary transfer application. You may be tempted to name just one school on the online application as it is the only school you want for your child. However, there are no guarantees that your child will be offered this school. To increase the chances of your child being offered a preferred school, we strongly advise you to list up to six preferences on their application.

There are various types of secondary schools to choose from including academies, voluntary aided, foundation, and free and schools. And it is here where the oversubscription criteria vary. It is important you fully understand the oversubscription criteria and match them to your own circumstances. Some schools are heavily oversubscribed, with hundreds applying for places.

Schools arrange open days/evenings where you can find out more about what they offer - you are strongly advised to check each school’s website for details on how and when they will be holding their open day/evening, as this may be subject to change at short notice.

Make sure you find out how many applications the school usually receives - this information will also be printed in the Starting Secondary school in Southwark 2024/25 brochure and the Starting secondary school in Lambeth 2024/25 booklet, as well as other boroughs.

The more people who apply for a school for their children, the bigger the risk that your child might not be offered a place at that school. Armed with this knowledge, you should be better placed to put your preferences down.

Do use all six preferences - however, you need to be wary about only choosing schools which are heavily over-subscribed. You should name your first preference school on the application, but also list preferences where your child has a realistic chance of being offered a place.

Applying for secondary schools can be emotionally difficult. It is such a vital decision for your child’s future.

If your child is in Year 6 and currently attending one of Southwark’s or Lambeth’s primary schools, you will receive further information from your child’s school.

If you are a Southwark resident you must apply online at: w w w. s o u t h w a r k . g o v. u k /

schooladmissions or if you are a Lambeth resident you must apply online at www.lambeth.gov.uk/eadmissions The online application process gets rid of the paperwork and is available to use 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The site allows users to save, continue or make changes to their application, right up until the closing date and your details are safe and secure. You will receive an email with a summary of your submitted application and you can also view the outcome online. The closing date to submit the online application is 31st October 2023 by 11.59pm.

You also need to ensure that you complete a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) for the schools that require these and submit it to the school by their individual deadline. These ask for further information, such as religious observance or regarding school specialisms. Where a school requires your child to sit an admissions banding test, it is vital that they sit the test. If you are applying to a secondary school that uses banding within its criteria, your child will be required to take a test. Please contact the school directly for further details on banding test arrangements.

If you are thinking of applying to schools that test for ability/aptitude, you must ensure that you register your

and submitted your online application by the closing date, your application will be processed. If you have successfully submitted your online application before the closing date, you will be able to view the results of your application on the eAdmissions website (www. eadmissions.org.uk) during the evening of 1st March 2024. You will also be sent an email in the evening of 1st March 2024 which will contain information on what to do next.

If it was not possible to offer a place at any of your preferred schools, then the School Admissions Team will allocate your child an alternative secondary school. This is likely to be the nearest school to your child’s home which has a vacancy. You also have the right to appeal against the decision not to offer your child a place at a preferred school.

The email containing the outcome of your child’s application will include information about how to appeal.

If it has not been possible to offer a place at any schools named as a higher preference on your child’s application, your child’s name will automatically be added to the waiting lists of these schools. You may also ask for your child’s name to be added to the waiting list of any out of borough schools listed on your application. Please contact the local authority the school is located in

Children who have an Education, Health and Care Plan follow a different admissions process and parents and carers must contact the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Team within their local authority for further advice.

For those that live in Southwark, if the School Admissions Team do not hear from you by this date, your offer will automatically be accepted and your child’s details forwarded to the allocated school. Only if you reject the offer and also provide details of any alternative arrangement you have made for your child’s education, will your child’s place be withdrawn and offered to the next child on the school’s waiting list.

fiShEr Abc have secured the return of their brilliant former coach ray ball after a six-year hiatus.

By Mark Baldwin SURReY neeDeD only four overs on day three this week to complete the trouncing of Warwickshire by an innings and 97 runs at the kia oval and move a big step closer to successive lv= insurance county championship titles.

Their 22-point victory, Surrey’s eighth of the season, will push them at least eighteen points clear of second-placed Essex, even if their only rivals for the championship pennant can gain maximum bowling points and also go on to beat Middlesex at Chelmsford later in this round of matches.

Both counties will then have just two games left in the campaign.

Warwickshire, who lost seventeen wickets to Surrey’s irresistible pace battery on the second day, were bowled out for 138 after resuming still 109 runs behind the 2022 champions and long-time Division One leaders at 126 for seven.

They had been asked to follow on the previous day and Dan Worrall struck with the fifth ball of the morning to remove

Henry Brookes for seven, fencing to second slip, and the match was soon over.

Worrall also sent back Dan Mousley in his second over, the left-hander thin-edging to keeper Ben Foakes to depart for 61.

Mousley had resisted stubbornly on the second evening but added only a single to his overnight score as Surrey closed in ruthlessly.

Victory came just fifteen minutes into the day’s play when Jordan Clark castled last man Chris Rushworth for six with the last ball of his second over.

Worrall finished with five for 25 and outstanding match figures of eight for 59, while Clark took four for 26 in Warwickshire’s second innings and five wickets overall.

Kemar Roach’s second day four for 64 did much to send Warwickshire sliding to 161 all out in their first innings, in reply to Surrey’s 396, and Tom Lawes was Surrey’s other wicket-taker in their five-pronged pace attack with two for 27 first time around.

Surrey captain Rory Burns said: “That was a great performance from us pretty

much from start to finish. In particular, I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a day like [Monday] when the wickets just kept on coming for us.

“I think we were expecting the pitch to get even better for batting as the game went on, over the four days, and having had to bat first after losing the toss. I certainly didn’t expect what happened yesterday but it’s pretty easy for me as captain when I’ve got a bowling attack as good as ours.

“It was good to have Kemar back and Dan was exceptional. He’s a real leader out there and is a brilliant bowler with lots of skills, but I thought Jordan also put in a really good performance in this match and there is a lot of excitement in this group about what is to come in the next few weeks.

“It’s been great to get back as a squad because in the past month or so we’ve been here, there and everywhere as players.

Some of us have played in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup but we’ve had a lot of players away elsewhere and so we were buzzing to be back together again in the dressing room.

“Essex are a very good side and we expect them to do well [in their game against

Middlesex] over the next few days. It could be a tight race to the finish between them and us but we simply have to concentrate on what we do and the desire is certainly there in our dressing room. We love playing fourday cricket for Surrey.”

“We were out-bowled and out-batted on a really good cricket wicket on which 250 to 300 was probably about par,” Warwickshire first-team coach Mark Robinson said.

“They got virtually 400 and then we just kept getting out and yesterday was a day we didn’t want. This morning was just an inevitability, after what happened [Monday].

“Dan Worrall was outstanding throughout the match and Jordan Clark too bowled extremely well but we came into this match a little bit light due to injuries and unavailability. Kraigg Brathwaite only arrived [from the West Indies} the day before this game, Ed Barnard had never batted at No 3 before and Chris Benjamin has not had that much cricket in this format recently, but none of that is an excuse because we should be better than we have been. We still should have had more quality as a team than we showed here.”

Skipper Andrew Carson had held on grimly while the wickets fell around him, and now began to go on the attack.

The seventh wicket fell to Ramzan, also bowled, with the score on 73, and Isaac Eustance claimed the eighth on 106.

Carson became the ninth wicket to fall, caught at slip off Apoorv Wankhade, on 131, having held his side together with 58 off 98 balls. Ahmed Khan claimed the last wicket via a Keaton stumping to dismiss Wanderers for 144 in the 43rd over.

The Dulwich reply was led in cavalier

fashion by eighteen-year-old opener Ollie Sykes, who put on 30 in 4.1 overs for the first wicket with Ollie Steele (eight) and fourteen for the second with Wankhade (ten). James Schofield joined him with the score on 44 after just 6.3 overs and the pair added 68 in twelve overs for the third wicket.

Dulwich seemed to be cruising to victory when the belated introduction of left-arm spinner Adam Dyson saw the momentum shift. He struck with his third ball, having Schofield caught behind for a solid 26, off 49 balls. Sykes fell in the next over, having scored 66 off just 50 balls. Skipper Chris Purshouse then held on at one end while Khan, Booth and Keaton all fell cheaply at the other. Purshouse levelled the scores in company with Ramzan, but was bowled by the next delivery. Dulwich had lost six wickets in thirteen overs for 32 runs, and

it was left to Emler to hit the winning run.

Dulwich thus achieved their sixth victory in their last six completed matches and finished in fifth place. Three of these victories were against sides who finished above them in the table. The last five had all been achieved with four or five players under the age of 20, which bodes well for the future. Two of these players, spin twins Khan and Ramzan, appeared regularly throughout the season. Ramzan was the leading wicket taker with 28, while Khan took 25 and also contributed 354 runs. Sykes became available after the end of the school term and hit 253 runs.at 50.60.

Mention should also be made of overseas player Wankhade. Despite missing four games in mid-season due to injury, he still amassed 603 runs at an average of 54.82.

By John Lewis DUlWich coMPleTeD their season in Division 1 of the aJ Sports Surrey championship with victory by two wickets at home to malden Wanderers last weekend.

Dulwich put their opponents in to bat on a lively pitch and were rewarded with a devastating opening spell by Harvey Booth. He bowled his ten overs straight through, conceding just seventeen runs and taking the first four wickets to reduce Wanderers to 44-4 in the fifteenth over.

Ball has spent much of that time in the professional ranks, training two-time British middleweight champion Denzil Bentley, the recent heavyweight world title challenger Daniel Dubois, his Olympian sister Caroline Dubois who is now a professional, and Danny Carr.

Ball steps back into the amateur ranks where he was second in command to the legendary Fisher coach, the late Steve Hiser, for over fifteen years.

Current coaches Peter McDonagh and George and Andrew Wadman convinced Ball to return to the famous Fisher gym in Bermondsey.

Andrew Wadman explained: “Peter McDonagh got in touch with Ray and we all met and confirmed we are all moving forward together.”

Andrew added: “Ray should have been back at the Fisher as soon as Steve fell Ill but had other commitments.

“Steve Hiser would be over the moon that Ray is back in the gym.

“Ray was head trainer to Daniel Dubois, Caroline Dubois, Denzil Bentley, Ted Cheeseman and amateur sensation and current ABA Champion and gold medalist in the European Championships, Sacha Hickey.”

Ball returns to Fisher with nine fighters of various weights all excellent prospects. Five of them are already open class, including the brilliant former Fisher favourite Hickey.

Ball joins the team of coaches hand-picked by Hiser before his passing in May. McDonagh, the Wadmans, Ash Sharma and Omar Riz will be joined by Darren Davis who has been Ball’s most trusty sidekick throughout his career.

Andrew Wadman said: “Ball has so much experience that anything is possible now and we expect to fulfil the Hiser legacy. Sacha Hickey comes back to the gym next week and we can’t wait to get started.”

By Kiro Evans MillWall UnDeR-21 boss kevin nugent admitted he "didn't enjoy watching the game" despite his side beating crewe Alexandra 2-0 on monday afternoon.

In sweltering conditions during the UK's late summer heatwave, the young Lions spurned a number of opportunities to leave their manager sweating.

But they eventually pulled through at Calmont Road after Kamarl Grant opened the scoring 30 minutes in before Abdul Abdulmalik finally sealed the three points late in the game.

In between the two strikes, Millwall had over 20 attempts on goal but kept missing chances. And they needed a big save from keeper George Evans to hold onto their 1-0 lead.

It proved to be an uncomfortable afternoon for Nugent.

He told Millwall's website: "A win is a win. Our performance was quite good. I don't think these lads will ever play in a game like that again, where we create so many chances - good opportunities - and do not hit the target. I think the score could have been vastly different.

"I didn't enjoy watching the game as we missed so many chances and, as football is, George [Evans] has had to make one really good save to make sure the game stays at 1-0. Abdul gets the second goal late on to kill the game off, but it should have been killed off a lot, lot earlier than that.

"At 1-0, it's always dangerous. You only need a set-piece, a mistake or something along those lines and they're back in it. But we got the win and that's all that matters."

The victory propels reigning Professional Development League holders Millwall up to second in Group B with three wins and a draw from their four games.

They trail Queens Park Rangers by two points.

The Lions grabbed the lead early from a Kevin Nisbet free-kick before a Birmingham fight back saw Jay Stansfield equalise eight minutes into the second half.

It was probably a fair result at the end of the game that ebbed and flowed and saw Matija Sarkic have to make a penalty save after he gave away a spot-kick.

Ryan Leonard was also denied a brilliant goal when his long-range strike was judged to be offside after hitting Jake Cooper.

The match is the final one before the

first international break of the season and the Lions were looking for back-toback wins after a hard-fought victory over Stoke City.

Birmingham, meanwhile, were hoping to get to the break with their unbeaten record intact after a brilliant start to their campaign under John Eustace.

Nisbet lit the blue touch paper for a breathless first half as he stepped up to a free-kick on the edge of the D after Tom Bradshaw was fouled five minutes in.

The Scottish striker, fresh off his first goal for the club last week, whipped an effort over the wall that beat John Ruddy despite the keeper getting a hand to the shot.

Birmingham would not be discouraged by the early strike and had a series of chances over the following 20 minutes, with Junior Bacuna wasting multiple opportunities.

And for a few seconds it looked like Millwall had survived the pressure and doubled their money when George Saville stepped up to take a corner after 22 minutes.

His cross flew over the heads of everyone in the box and fell for Ryan Leonard from 25-yards out, with his

excellent volley deflecting off Cooper before going in.

Celebrations had been going on for at least 30 seconds before those of a Millwall persuasion saw the raised flag of the assistant referee, who appeared to need a few seconds to make up his mind. He judged the shot deflected off an offside Cooper on its way in.

Shaun Hutchinson went off with a calf issue not long after and was replaced by Wes Harding before Birmingham had their best chance to equalise after Matija Sarkic fouled Keshi Anderson.

But the keeper would redeem himself with a fine penalty save from Scott Hogan after referee Josh Smith pointed to the spot.

Birmingham did eventually equalise eight minutes into the second half when Stansfield drove an effort low into the bottom corner after finding space in the box.

The last 30 minutes would throw up fewer chances as both teams tired after the hectic first hour.

Substitutions were introduced and Millwall gave debuts off the bench to deadline day signings Ryan Longman and Allan Campbell. But no one could find

the breakthrough and both teams would have to settle for a point.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett said: "I’m not displeased with it. After beating Stoke last week and drawing with Birmingham City, I think you’d take those four points.

"I just feel we’re at a point at the moment where if we just show a little more, then I think there’s a great opportunity today – and it’s easy for me to say, and I’m not diminishing Birmingham at all – but I felt that was a real opportunity to take the three points after the first half.

Maybe at the moment we just didn’t quite show that confidence but that’s certainly something for us to work on strongly in the international break."

that is now so unpredictable it borders on exhausting.

Look no further than last weekend when, after Millwall drew with Birmingham in an early afternoon game, a number of strange things began to happen from 3pm.

Leeds United, who a week earlier had beaten league leaders Ipswich Town, were held to a draw by a Sheffield Wednesday side who had lost every previous league game. Unfancied Rotherham United won against in-form Norwich City. Hull City beat Leicester City, handing them their first defeat of the season. Huddersfield Town took their first win away at West Brom.

And let's not forget the other early game that day, when Sunderland demolished one of the league's strongest teams in Southampton by a scoreline of 5-0 out of nowhere.

All of this means that, after five games, Preston North End sit top of the table while last season's play-off semi-finalists Middlesbrough are bottom. Not a single person on Earth would've predicted that at the start of the campaign.

The built-in unpredictability of the Championship has long been the league's biggest selling point. It's a division that follows no logic and seems to produce scorelines using a random result generator.

It may not have the glitz and glamour of the Premier League, but it has an erratic and baffling lack of structure that has long been lost in the top division.

The three sides relegated from the top flight, Leicester, Leeds and Southampton, have not looked particularly comfortable so far, despite their clear advantage in resources.

Meanwhile the three promoted sides, Ipswich, Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday, have had a mix of fortunes which sees them scattered across the table.

Where are Millwall amid all of this chaos? Bang in the middle - twelfth

place in a 24-team league, nicely summing up their mixed season so far.

In fairness to the Lions, they have not had the easiest fixture list, but then very few games in this division are ever easy.

The best test of their ability will come in their next match, against Leeds, a high-quality team on paper that have shown a number of flaws and played their first few games with a seriously unsettled squad.

That could be the perfect game for Millwall to show a calm head amid the Championship madness and turbocharge their season.

Norton-Cuffy told our paper: "The project that they have going on here, last season and the season before that, they've really been pushing. I spoke to the coaching staff and they put up a diagram for me of my game and where they thought I could improve. And once I saw that, I said 'I can't really turn this down'.

A footbAll charity that helped develop two of millwall's young stars have given a glimpse into how they have built their success from nothing.

Kinetic Foundation have been guiding and inspiring the next generation of talent in London over the last sixteen years - including Millwall Under-21 talents Niino Adom-Malaki and Kamarl Grant.

The programme works closely with the Harris Federation of schools to give youngsters a chance to break into professional football - and give them an academic platform to fall back on if they don't achieve their dreams.

Along with Millwall's duo, 71 students from Kinetic have signed for professional clubs, including the likes of Southampton midfielder Joe Aribo and West Bromwich Albion striker Josh Maja.

Co-founder Harry Hudson said he was inspired to launch the idea after seeing how football and community work went hand in hand during his younger years.

He said: "My background was in football. I wanted to be a professional footballer but wasn't quite good enough.

"Before going to university, I had a

"When I go on loan, I look at it as: I want to win as many games as possible, firstly. I want to help the team to achieve as much as possible.

And then I have to look at my own development as well as I want to be the best player I can be.

"The sports science team [at Arsenal] spoke to their sports science team and saw the attributes in my game and they wanted to take it even further as well and that was big for me.

"Also the fans had a big part to

play. It's never nice as an away game coming to The Den. Fans are always loud, fans are always noisy. So with them on my side this time, it was a nobrainer really."

"I feel like this decision to come to Millwall was a good one, so I'm happy."

Lions boss Gary Rowett wasn't done with Norton-Cuffy and signed his seventh and eighth players on transfer deadline day.

Both coming in on loan, Ryan Longman from Hull and Allan Campbell from Luton made their debuts as substitutes in the 1-1 draw at Birmingham.

And it was the first interaction I had in the space of community work or social inclusion work and it was eye-opening for me. It was an amazing experience and framed my trajectory quite dramatically. Those who join the Kinetic project are placed at a school, have a normal education but are also coached and mentored football and life skills.

Hudson adds: "One of the key mechanisms where Kinetic is slightly different is most charities will either look at government data or recognise a social issue and will then go in and deliver a programme to directly impact an issue. Knife crime is a good example.

"And I'm not saying [those programmes] are not impactful, but what we try to do is embed ourselves in the community first. We build a relationship with young people based on something they want, ie a football opportunity to try and make it pro, and then our interaction with the young people is based on something quite

positive from the start."

Hudson believes Kinetic is now home to some of the "best un-signed talent" in London and was particularly proud when, last year, eleven boys moved to professional clubs.

The co-founder, who created Kinetic alongside James Fotheringham, still keeps tabs on Grant and Adom-Malaki's progress.

He said: "If he can stay injury-free, Kamarl as a defender can pretty much do everything. He heads the ball really well, he's two-footed, good physical attributes, he's a good leader and a good communicator. I'm a big fan of Kamarl.

He hasn't quite kicked on as much injuries have held him back - but once he gets passed that he's got a real good chance in the game.

"And Niino, we developed him and he had to learn a lot about defending direct play and defending balls over his head [after he transitioned from a central midfielder to a left-back].

"But again, a bit of time, a bit work and he really kicked on. He was quite a quiet boy at the start but he started to come out of his shell at Millwall and I know he was on the bench a couple of weeks ago [against Norwich City] so he's absolutely flying now. Really pleased for him."

By Kiro Evans STeve MoRiSon is loving life away from the spotlight as he plots his way to the top from non-league football.

The Millwall legend left some football fans surprised when he announced in the summer he was taking over as manager of Hornchurch, a non-league club in the seventh-tier of English football.

His only previous job in football management was with Championship side Cardiff City, where he was sacked almost a year ago.

Morison found himself chomping at the bit to get back into coaching and had no reservations about dropping down a few divisions to do what he loved again.

He told our paper: "The chairman has been backing me massively in just allowing me to get on with the job and trusting what we've been doing on the pitch. And yeah, it's been great. All the lads have been great, everyone around the football club is fantastic and a really good help. It needed a sense of

professionalism brought to it, as much as you can in non-league, and that's all I've tried to do. And hopefully we'll reap the rewards of it going forward.

"You just get a little more leeway to practice stuff. You put as much pressure on yourself as you would anywhere.

Obviously, there's less scrutiny around it so it's quite nice from that point of view.

"I had a lot of scrutiny [at Cardiff] because I was a young manager and if I said something it got blown up into something a hell of a lot worse than if someone [else] said something. They can say what you want about young players but if I did it, it was the end of the world.

"But ultimately, it's a good opportunity to learn, practice stuff, find out what training sessions work, what things don't work, what you could do better, people skills. Obviously, you're dealing with lots of different people, people that have got jobs, people who are going to work all day. I'm learning all the time and that's the most important thing."

Hornchurch have enjoyed a very solid start to the season in the Isthmian League Premier Division, which contains

clubs as varied as the older, established sides like Dulwich Hamlet to newer, trendy teams like Hashtag United.

Hornchurch have won three and drawn two of their opening five league games.

Last weekend they beat Fakenham Town in the FA Cup first qualifying round and have been handed a trip to Witham Town, who are one step below Morison's side in England's vast football pyramid.

Speaking before Monday's draw, Morison refused to get carried away with "hopes and dreams" that Hornchurch could go on a crazy cup run.

He said: "I think it just depends how the draw ends up, to be honest. The next round you have the Conference North and South teams come in so if you can plough your way through and avoid anyone who's in a higher level than you before the big guys come in ... we'll see.

Let's just see, we've all got hopes and dreams of getting promoted and having a cup run so we'll see how the land lies."

On the prospect of a hypothetical, fantasy third-round FA Cup clash with Millwall in January, Morison said: "That would be incredible. It would be a great

day out but as I said we can all dream but we have to get there first."

The 40-year-old, who enjoyed three spells at The Den and is the third-highest goal scorer in the club's history, still keeps an eye on Millwall and has liked what he's seen so far.

He said: "It's been a solid start. But look the Championship is mental. The nicest thing for Millwall fans now is they're not looking at the bottom of the table. They're not sitting there at the start of pre-season going 'let's just hope we don't get relegated.'

"Can they make that next step and get to the play-offs? For me, it's been a real solid start. They've made some really good signings. [Allan] Campbell's a good signing, [Ryan] Longman's a great player for the squad. And [Kevin] Nisbet has got a couple of goals already, that's always good as a striker.

"They've invested well. Unfortunately, they didn't get Kieffer Moore, that would have been a great coup for them. They'll keep building and see where they are and see if they're anywhere near where they need to be so they can kick on again."

Four players - Kevin Nisbet, Tom Bradshaw, George Saville and Matija Sarkic - will be looking to get some game time in the European Championship 2024 qualifying games.

Nisbet's Scotland have won all four of their group games and are well on the road to the tournament in Germany next summer. The striker will be looking to contribute in Friday's trip to Cyprus and next week's friendly against England.

Meanwhile, Bradshaw will be hoping to revive Wales' Euro 2024 hopes after they lost two of their first four games.

After a friendly against South Korea, they face a crunch game away at Latvia next week.

Saville's Northern Ireland play important games away at Slovenia and Kazakhstan as they look to bounce back from three defeats in a row and navigate themselves through Group H. And Sarkic will be aiming for his eighth and ninth Montenegro caps as his country face Lithuania and Bulgaria in their pursuit of claiming one of the top two spots in Group G. While Millwall continue their wait for a first England cap for a Lions player since 1938, Romain Esse and Arsenal loanee Brooke Norton-Cuffy could both be in action for the underage teams.

Fresh off his first international goal in June, Esse has taken the step up to the Under-19s who will be taking on Germany and Spain.

Norton-Cuffy's England Under-21 side take on Luxembourg while the Republic of Ireland Under-21 team, featuring Aidomo Emakhu, face off against Turkey and San Marino.
