car parking permits, paying up to £300 annually - with prices varying depending on their cars’ environmental impact.

Locals have just been asked to say what hours they’d like the residents' permits to operate - but not whether they opposed the scheme entirely.

In the blog posted on Cllr McAsh's personal website in June 2019, years before he took up his cabinet post, he stated that a CPZ should only be implemented: - with the consent of residents in any zone, and - if the consultation can result in full implementation, full rejection, or partial implementation in a zone smaller than the consultation area.

The post also proposed that a smaller CPZ scheme would work, which is the complete opposite of the current plans.

The current plans to implement a CPZ across the whole borough were set out in the Local Implementation Plan and the Movement Plan of March and April 2019.

The PoliTiCiaN overseeing the council's controversial policy to impose controlled parking zones (CPZs) across the entire borough without full consultation was crossexamined last week over a blog post he wrote saying no zone should be implemented without 'the consent of residents'.

Cllr James McAsh, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, Clean Air and Streets, was questioned at the most recent Southwark Council Assembly last Wednesday, July 12, about a blog he posted four years ago.

The campaigners against a proposed CPZ in Nunhead unearthed the blog from June 2019 as Southwark Council now pushes for 100 per cent CPZ coverage by August next year.

said his stance had changed following that policy announcement.

He said: “I want to be really really clear here, that the policy has changed so pointing out things I said before the policy had changed, when I described the previous policy isn’t a ‘gotcha’, because the policy has changed.”

However, the blog was in fact posted in June 2019, several weeks after the council said it wanted 100 per cent CPZ coverage across the borough.

This paper asked Cllr McAsh when he personally changed his mind on CPZs. Unfortunately, he has not responded.

He did tell the council assembly: “Our policy on controlled parking permits changed with the introduction of the Movement Plan in 2019, before the last election.” He added that the council were pushing ahead with the borough-wide plan, based on "fairness", as well as to accommodate their aim - set out in their manifesto - to "improve air quality."

"It cannot be that residents of Camberwell and Bermondsey have to pay for [parking]

and people in Dulwich Village and Nunhead get that for free." He commented that this would ultimately be "unfair and unjust."

He added: "Frankly if we were to do a borough-wide consultation on whether Nunhead and Dulwich should have special treatment, I don’t think that the people in Bermondsey would return a very strong yes vote for that."

Nunhead resident, Corin Burr, who is among 3,175 people who sign a petition opposing CPZ in the area, told us: "We're not opposed to individual CPZs requiring them to solve a problem, but we are opposing a borough-wide one."

Plans for a CPZ in Queen’s Road and in Dulwich Village have also seen people outraged that they cannot have the option to say ‘no’ to the scheme.

The Kirby Estate has been busy painting walls and buying banners ahead of England’s first game against Haiti on Saturday, July 22.

Organiser and estate resident Chris Dowse said: “Because the last World Cup was at Christmas, the flags took an absolute battering because of the weather and snow.

“So we’ve got another 40 flags coming, another 30 packs of bunting, and we’ve got all the old bunting from last Christmas which we’re gonna try

and re-use.”

Families have been draping the Bermondsey estate with St. George’s flags for over a decade - starting when football fever swept through south London during Euro 2012.

England’s journey ended with a penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy in the quarters - but the Kirby’s flagwaving frenzy didn’t finish there.

By the 2018 World Cup, flags were hanging from every balcony. For the Women’s Euros in 2022, the estate unveiled a thirteen-foot mural of England star and estate namesake Fran Kirby.

This year, Chris and his team have painted a new St George’s cross mural and there are plans to paint the bollards red-and-white.

The multi-cultural estate is home to Irish, Canadians, Spaniards, Portuguese, Brazilians and Jamaicans.

All those nations are competing this year and the estate will also provide them with their flags.

Asked to assess England’s chances this year, Chris said: “We’re right up there. Beth Mead’s injured, Fran Kirby’s injured, Leah Williamson’s injured so that’s a big nucleus of players from the last tournament but our bench in the Euros last year was so strong.

“Rachel Daly was playing left back last year but her natural position is up front! So I think she’ll be playing up front this time. I actually think we’ve got a really good chance.”

The bookies have England as secondfavourites to win the tournament on 9/2, pipped by the USA on 13/5.

The Women’s World Cup kicks off on July 20 and the final will be played at Stadium Australia, Sydney, on August 20.

By Isabel Ramirez a maN from southwark's waste collecting team, who spends his breaks collecting loose change from people's rubbish, has found over £800-worth this year and donated it to charity.

Lucian Lodge is one of Veolia Southwark’s traffic marshalls, partly responsible for over 300 waste vehicles every day. As well as ensuring the site runs smoothly, Lucian has been collecting lost change from the recycling facility floor for the past five years.

With no way to reunite the coins with their original owners, Lucian instead donates them to charity.

Dedicated to the cause, Lucian said he has been coming into work half an hour early every shift since 2019 to retrieve any loose coins that have been accidentally put in the bin and ended up at the recycling facility. "It all started in 2019 when I discovered 1p’s, 2p’s, 5p’s and 10p’s hidden in the waste," he explained.

"My manager agreed I could take out whatever I could find and give to charity.

Since that day, I’ve been coming to work early every day to collect coins. My target is three to four pounds a day."

He decided to donate the money to the Sickle Cell Society - as his son suffers from the disease. It is the only charity in the UK that works with doctors and families of people affected by Sickle Cell Disorder to improve their overall quality of life. Sickle cell is a lifelong blood disease which leads to an increased risk of serious infections in sufferers.

"I put my time into doing this because I

see what my son goes through with the sickness," he said.

Over the past eighteen months since his previous donation, he has collected £811 (over £160 more than his last collection.)

To celebrate this donation, Lucian visited the charity's office in Kilburn to meet the team behind the charity.

After the recycling is collected from homes across London it is sorted into different materials in Veolia Southwark’s Materials Recovery Facility.

Specialised machines will separate metals by type, either by using magnets or currents which repel things like aluminium cans. These materials are pressurised into condensed bales and sent off to be made into new products. However, in this baling process, small pieces of metal, including coins, often slip through the cracks.

This is where Lucian finds the change he collects, so even those pieces that don’t make it through still get recycled.

Lucian added: "‘I love my job and I enjoy contributing to the larger community of Southwark and making a difference.

Whether this difference is making sure that all the waste and recycling is disposed of correctly and supporting ecological transformation or donating to charities that improve quality of life, I feel proud of what I do and what I can do for others."

In an interview with this paper, Superintendent Shaz Shah said antisocial drug dealing, phone snatching and burglaries were also key priorities.

He is one of London’s twenty new Local Neighbourhood Superintendents employed by Met Police chief Mark Rowley to strengthen neighbourhood policing.

The move - along with the addition of 500 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) by the end of 2023 - responds to concerns that petty crime goes unaddressed.

Superintendent Shah’s job is to work with Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs), Southwark Council and local organisations to identify local issues and report them back to Scotland Yard.

Asked to outline his priorities, he said: “I always go back to the e-bike

one because it’s not a big hitter like a robbery. But actually, it’s something that’s really impacting end-users.”

Residents often complain that electric bicycles, modified to go up to 50mph using kits available online, are menacing pedestrians.

“That impacts people using Peckham High Street. It just makes it a place they’re not wanting to be because it’s not safe,” he said.

Converted bikes are also linked to fires as with Sofia Duarte, the 21-yearold killed in an Old Kent Road fire in May. Superintendent Shah said the Rye Lane team would conduct operations to seize illegal e-bikes on a quarterly basis.

During an operation on Rye Lane in May, officers seized two e-bikes.

But he added that officers had “autonomy” to decide whether to criminalise those caught. He said education was sometimes the best option to avoid punishing people “for doing something they didn’t realise they were doing wrong”.

He also said phone-snatching was a priority after it was revealed that Southwark was the third most menaced

borough in London with 5,690 incidents in 2023.

DSI Shah said “intelligence-led models” were identifying the hot spots but people should be “savvy” about having their phones out in public.

Anecdotally, Canada Water is often cited as a hotspot but Shah said: “It’s… nowhere near as [much of] an issue as it would be in… Bankside and London Bridge and into Waterloo.”

Asked to give an example where neighbourhood teams have quickly responded to the community’s concerns, he said they’d recently kicked out a drug dealer who was ‘cuckooing’ a vulnerable adult.

This is where dealers take over somebody’s home and use it as a base for drug dealing.

500 PCSOs will hit London’s streets

by December 2023 - officers who don’t have arrest powers but are “the eyes and ears of the community” tackling low level crime.

Asked if 500 was enough, he said: “I think 500 is a very good starting point and I think that’s a brave decision by the commissioner to say we definitely need this.”

He added that patients were being “failed”: “We are failing them first by sending police officers, not medical professionals, to those in mental health crisis, and expecting them to do their best in circumstances where they are not the right people to be dealing with the patient.”

A Met Police spokesperson later said officers would attend where that was a threat to life.

But DSI Shah has now suggested that Mark Rowley had been misinterpreted and that “headline-grabbing” has missed the nuance of the Met’s approach.

Asked whether Southwark police would respond to mental health calls, he said: “We have a duty of care to people whether they’re having a mental health crisis, they’re a victim of a crime or a suspect… you’re gonna get that level of care you need as somebody suffering from a mental health crisis.”

Local Neighbourhood Superintendent Shah said officers would “absolutely” respond to mental health-related calls and officers had a “duty of care” to people suffering mental health crises.

This may come as a surprise to some after it was widely reported that Commissioner Mark Rowley would order officers to stop responding to mental health call-outs.

In a letter to the Met’s health and social care partners, Met Police Commissioner Mark Rowley had written: “I have asked my team that the Met introduce RCRP this summer and withdraw from health-related calls by no later than August 31.”

Roughly one in five adults in Southwark have a mental disorder, equating to approximately 47,000 individuals, according to Southwark Council.

Castle Square in Elephant and Castle has hosted a number of traders after they were relocated there when the shopping centre was demolished in 2020.

Now, the traders are collectively speaking out against the management - which includes the landlord, Get Living (a branch of developer Delancey) and managing agent, Savills - after they say the 'declining condition' is costing them customers.

They said they chose to speak out together because they said they "don't feel safe" to do so alone.

Their statement mentions issues of substandard maintenance, cleaning, security and signage - which they say is down to "poor management."

They point to issues with the lifts - one of which breaks "consistently" and the other that has been broken for nine weeks. "This is a fire hazard and accessibility issue for customers and traders," they commented.

We were sent images of a disabled young customer having to be carried out of their wheelchair up the stairs just to shop.

One trader who would prefer to remain anonymous said conditions were "disgusting" and they wished they could afford legal action.

"I wish I could pay a solicitor because they [Get Living and Savills] just do what they want," they told us.

"People are not listening. I don’t know how my voice or others can be heard if nobody does anything. Every day Castle Square is deteriorating more and more.

We asked the management team whether they were aware of these ongoing issues. In a statement, a spokesperson told us they were 'aware' but said the issues, such as the lift were not down to poor management. "In terms of the managing agents, it is important to note that these problems have not arisen due to lack of maintenance or poor management.

"We have confidence in our managing

agent, Savills, and their commitment to resolving these issues. We believe they are well-equipped and remain focused on addressing the challenges we have encountered."

The lift in question, which traders say has been broken for nine weeks, is still broken.

The spokesperson continued, "We promptly resolved the issue with one of the lifts, which was caused by faulty control buttons.

"Extensive investigations have been conducted regarding the second lift, including multiple visits by contractors.

Replacement parts have been ordered and we are in contact directly with the manufacturer, who is on standby to install the parts as soon as they have arrived and

Sophie Wall, Community Projects manager at Latin Elephant, said: "The landlord and managing agent are contractually obliged to deliver certain services at Castle Square, but are consistently failing to meet these responsibilities.

She continued: "The declining conditions and lack of timeframes for repair have resulted in stress for traders, who ran thriving businesses in the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre before relocating to this site as part of the regeneration scheme.

"Get Living and Savills, with revenues in the millions and billions respectively, act with impunity and no accountability

Councillor Helen Dennis, Southwark Council's Cabinet Member for New Homes & Sustainable Development, said: “We have been working closely with traders from Elephant and Castle for many years now, pushing for the very best outcome for them. We do everything we can to help facilitate between businesses, developers, and landlords when issues arise.

"We have been made aware of the broken lift at Castle Square and have followed this up with the landlord directly. We want to reassure traders that we will remain in contact with their landlord until all the issues have been resolved.”

By Herbie Russell Fifteen derelict railway arches will undergo a £3 million transformation - breathing new life into Peckham's former bronze foundry.

The Arch Company bought the Consort Road site, which once housed the Meridian Bronze statue makers, in 2019.

It will be named Bronze Yard - a nod to its metallurgic past.

Famous monuments, like the Winston Churchill figure in Parliament Square, were once moulded there - but it will soon host shops, cafes and offices.

Dr Salter’s Daydream, which depicted the much-loved Bermondsey campaigner and politician, was also cast there. Sadly, it was stolen from Bermondsey Wall in 2011.

A British summer time pop-up park is opening outside the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre this month.

Families are invited to get stuck into face-painting, balloon modelling and bubble art at the Love Summer launch party - starting at 3.30pm on Friday, July 21.

There will be free fruit, soft drinks, buckets hats ad live music - with festivities packing in at 8.30pm.

The new pop-up park is by the Tesco entrance and will be divided into two zones.

One will become a Summer Terrace - an outdoor space complete with deck chairs, lawn games, bunting and blankets.

Arch Company CEO Craig McWilliam said: "We are thrilled to embark on this transformative journey to revive these historic railway arches in Peckham.

"The Arch Company is investing over £3 million into redeveloping these arches to preserve their heritage and create valuable opportunities for new businesses in this area, contributing to the economic growth and vibrancy of Peckham.”

Refurbishment works include lining each arch, installing new floor slabs and installing rolling shutters. It is expected to bring 75 jobs to the area.

The Arch Company bought 5,200 properties from Network Rail in 2019, making it the UK’s biggest small business landlord.

The 26-year-old father-of-one was killed following an incident in Nunhead Green, where two robbers allegedly tried to steal his electric bike, on Sunday, June 25.

Nineteen-year-old Yusuf Kallon, from Peckham, has been charged with murder.

According to The Independent, a second suspect is believed to have fled abroad.

In a fundraising appeal that has already received £1,300, the Trotman family wrote: “In the wake of the regrettable and deeply saddening loss of Rohan Trotman, our objective is to initiate a fundraising campaign on behalf of his family in order to provide assistance for his young autistic son, for whom he was the primary provider.

“It is a devastating reminder that each and every one of us should have the right to feel safe and secure in our own

communities and reach home safely.

“In this time of immeasurable loss and unimaginable pain, your outpouring of love and unwavering support has touched us beyond words. We are genuinely appreciative for any donations offered.”

Police were first called to the incident in Nunhead Green, near the junction with Gordon Road, at 9.20pm, on June 25, following reports of a stabbing.

A member of the public rushed Rohan to hospital but, tragically, he died the next morning.

Police launched an urgent investigation and arrested Kallon, from Marmont Road, on July 6.

As well as murder, he was charged with two counts of robbery, possession of a bladed article, and possession of

cannabis.

Friends of Rohan have been writing tributes on the gofundme page. One person wrote: “Sleep tight Ro, I’ll always treasure our memories growing up.. praying for your son & your family.

Hopefully this makes it just a bit easier for them.”

Another said: “It’s only a small donation but I hope it helps. Prayers to the family.”

Following Rohan’s death, the Nunhead Salvation Army opened its doors to mourners for several days, who paid their respects and lit candles in Rohan’s memory.

Yusuf Kallon has been remanded in custody. He will face a plea hearing on September 26 and a provincial four-week trial from May 20, 2024.

Developer British Land, which is behind the huge Canada Water Masterplan scheme, has created the new park. Edward Cree, Head of Asset Management, said: “It’s particularly good to see London’s friendliest, and free, pop-up come to life alongside the exciting work in progress that will bring a new, sustainable town centre to Canada Water.”

City of London Police confirmed it had arrested three men in coordinated swoops across Rotherhithe, Waterloo and Bermondsey “following a serious organised crime investigation”.

The local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “There was an almighty boom which woke me and my partner.

have been arrested following a serious organised crime investigation into the supply of drugs in the City.

Seventy-year-old Patrick Cronin was in hospital when a thief nicked his newlyrefurbished Pro Rider Road King scooter from the Barset Road Sheltered Living.

The News published an online article about his plight and a generous reader has now donated their old scooter to the retired digger driver.

The search for the thieves continues but, in the meantime, Patrick can finally enjoy a long-awaited pint at the Nag’s Head, Peckham, after eleven days stuck indoors.

Patrick said: “I can’t believe it. It’s a lovely scooter, it’s a beauty. I am so pleased… I’ll tell you what, I’ll get some stickers and put Southwark News all over it! I will!

Asked what he’ll do with his new-found freedom, he said: “I’m looking forward to a pint. I’m taking these antibiotics at the moment which finish on Thursday [and then] I can do what I want.”

The donor, an elderly woman from Rothjerhithe, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I know what it’s like

to be stuck indoors and not be able to go out on your own and I just can’t bear the thought of him stuck indoors.

"My husband used to love going to the pub. He went down for the company, not the drink. He loved it.”

Crooks pilfered the scooter while it was charging in the courtyard as Patrick spent the evening at King’s College Hospital on Thursday, July 6.

By 6am, on Friday, July 7, it had mysteriously vanished from the communal garden - which is only accessible with a fob.

Police initially told this paper there were “no realistic lines of enquiry” and Patrick became frustrated by care staff who he said “couldn’t be bothered”.

Six days after the crime was committed, Patrick said staff still hadn’t reviewed the footage, despite there being several CCTV cameras pointed towards the crime scene.

Without the scooter, which Patrick recently spent £450 refurbishing, he couldn’t even go shopping or get a breath of fresh air.

Having moved to Peckham from Ireland in 1965, Patrick has “hundreds” of friends locally but can’t see them at his favourite haunt - the Nag’s Head - a fifteen-minute scoot away.

Brand-new permanent sculpture garden arrives in Camberwell

By Isabel Ramirez A small piece of land on Camberwell New Road is going to be 'transformed' into a permanent sculpture garden.

BUILDHOLLYWOOD, known for creating outdoor art spaces, are launching their latest creation Dancing in the Shadow of Henry - in Camberwell.

On Monday, July 17, a small street-side piece of land on Camberwell New Road will be transformed into a brand new permanent, pocket sculpture garden.

This is all part of the Your Space or Mine initiative, an ongoing project to give artists a platform to present their work outdoors.

The first sculpture to launch the new art space is called Chicken and Egg by Sarah Staton. She said of the piece: "This chicken and egg is like yin and yang, two parts of a whole, reciprocal and balanced."

As the project's lead artist and curator, Sarah will select further work both from local artists and graduate students to be displayed on the plinth, with a six-month turnaround.

millwall Fan and walking Football 'hero' Passes away

a millWall fan, who set up a walking football team for people with cancer whilst suffering himself, has died aged 77.

Tony Linforth-Hall had been suffering from a terminal blood cancer called Hodgkin-Lymphoma for a couple of years. He died on Friday, July 14.

Despite having an incurable illness, the avid Millwall supporter never let that stop him from helping others.

Before his diagnosis, he was playing walking football – similar to the traditional sort except players aren’t allowed to run. It is typically meant for older people with reduced mobility, but Tony believed it could benefit people with cancer too.

In an interview a few months ago, he told us he created the team to share what he believed helped to ‘keep him alive.’ His legacy lives on - not only with the team but with the hope he created for people at their darkest hour.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Liberal Democrat Cllr Maria LinforthHall, who says she is 'touched' by the messages she has received since his passing.

"They call him a warrior and a hero," she said.

Maria added that they plan to scatter his ashes at the Millwall ground, to honour his love of the club.

The date of the funeral is still to be confirmed.

A new project to get kids reading has allowed seventeen underserved schools across the borough to upgrade their current libraries.

The Chase Rewarding Futures school libraries programme aims to improve access to literacy resources by transforming underused reading spaces into places for inspiration and creativity.

Each school has also received 500 new books donated by Penguin Random House UK. This means over 4,500 children in Southwark now have more space and books to read.

Three primary schools have benefitted from a complete transformation of their current reading space.

These are Goose Green Primary and Nursery School in East Dulwich, Brunswick Park Primary School in Camberwell and St James the Great Roman Catholic Primary School in Peckham.

Protestors leave Aylesbury Estate plastered with banners after Walworth demonstration

By Herbie Russell CamPaiGNeRs haVe left the aylesbury estate plastered with angry banners accusing southwark Council of “social cleansing” and “scam” regeneration.

Roughly 100 protestors marched down Walworth Road in a demonstration against the demolition of the Aylesbury Estate on Saturday, July 8, leaving the banners in their wake.

Aysen Dennis, from Fight4Aylesbury, who is taking the council to court, said: It’s time for Southwark Council to listen to the Aylesbury tenants and refurbish the estate, or we can retrofit it!! All the empty boarded-up flats need people to live in them.

“Southwark Council claims to be an environmentally friendly borough but demolishing and rebuilding the biggest estate in western Europe creates a huge carbon footprint.”

In 2014, Southwark Council signed a

£1.5bn deal with Notting Hill Genesis (NHG) to carry out the eighteen-year regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate.

But with construction stalling in 2020, the council paid NHG £193 million for 280 homes which the council would turn into social housing.

Under previous agreements these would have been sold privately or let for ‘intermediate’ rent.

But campaigners argue the £193million Southwark Council paid to Notting Hill Genesis was a “bad deal” at £690,000 per home.

Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “We’re currently on site building over 580 high-quality council homes on the Aylesbury estate for existing residents to move to, making it the largest new council homes site in the country, and with even more social rent homes on the way in future phases.

“We’ll be handing over the keys for many of these homes later this year and are looking forward to residents from the estate moving in.

“We’re replacing the homes that were badly built in the '60s and ‘70s, which are reaching the end of their life.”

An NHG spokesperson said: “We are very proud of our plans for the regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate, which will replace old, inefficient homes that are no longer fit for purpose with warm, safe, high-quality housing that will benefit existing and future residents alike.

“The option of refurbishing the estate has been looked at before and has long been deemed impractical. Instead, the focus has been on providing a vibrant, thriving community with quality public realm, vital services and improved areas for play and relaxation.

“Once the new homes have been built, the improved energy efficiency will have a large environmental benefit compared to the existing estate. We also submitted a full environmental report outlining what would be done to mitigate areas of risk and ensure the regeneration is as green as possible.”

This week, the latter had a visit from two famous children's authors to mark the opening of their brand-new library.

Award-winning broadcaster, journalist and author, Chris Smith known for presenting BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat and writing the 'Kid Normal' series - shared his journey and the writing processes he has adopted.

Tracey Corderoy hosted a drawalong workshop and interactive reading of her work, which includes her 'Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam' series.

Sally Delaney, Senior Teacher at St James the Great Primary School, said: "I have had many great experiences in my long career in teaching but the whole project of the library refurbishment has been very special as the children have taken ownership of this from the beginning."

In addition, a further fourteen primary schools have received enhanced reading zones including modular furniture and a diverse selection of books.

‘We have just celebrated two great 75th anniversaries’ T

he lasT few weeks have marked two important 75th anniversaries.

The birth of our NHS and the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush. Both have enriched our country and borough.

It’s hard to imagine life without the NHS. For me it is the service that was there when my children were born, in my grandparents’ last days, when my father had, and recovered from, cancer and when I struggled with my own mental health.

Every family has their own version of those stories. Of the brilliant nurses, doctors, midwifes, radiographers, therapists and countless others who’ve been there for us and our loved ones when we need them most.

Above all the NHS is a simple idea. Healthcare for all, free at the point of use. Turning that idea into reality is one of our greatest national achievements.

It’s an achievement we all play a part in every day.

How so?

Because every day we all chip in to pay for the NHS – through the tax we pay on our incomes and that bit of VAT we pay every time we go to the shops – and by doing so we all help to save hundreds of lives every day. That’s something we can all be deeply proud of.

When the Labour Party created the NHS 75 years ago, no one could have imagined the treatments available today. Heart transplants, laser surgery, MRI scanners and so much more. With our Southwark hospitals providing some of the most advanced care in the world.

Yet sadly our NHS is not in good health. After thirteen years of Conservative government, waiting times have gone from weeks to months. Getting a doctor’s appointment can be an impossible task and NHS dentists are as rare as hen’s teeth.

For our NHS to last another 75 years our country needs change.

We need a Labour government that will breathe new life back into our hospitals, dentists and GP surgeries.

A Labour government would start with one of the greatest workforce expansions our health service has ever seen. With more doctors, more nurses, lower waiting times and higher standards for patients. That’s a change that can’t come soon enough.

In Southwark, Labour is already showing what can be done.

Across our country children are having to wait months or even years for mental health support.

In Southwark we have opened our Nest open-access mental health service so all children can get mental health support when they need it.

Nationally, social care has for too long been the poor cousin of healthcare. In Southwark, Labour has introduced our Ethical and Residential Care Charters, guaranteeing basic higher standards and ensuring care workers get a living wage.

There is so much more we could achieve with Labour in power nationally too.

That we are celebrating two 75th anniversaries is no coincidence.

The same year the NHS was created people arrived on the Windrush in answer to a call to help rebuild Britain after the war.

Part of a generation that moved from across the Caribbean and wider commonwealth to the motherland.

Many came to help create the newly formed NHS, signing up as nurses and helping to build our hospitals.

Many more came to rebuild homes and industry, making our country and borough a richer, more diverse and fantastic place.

It has been brilliant to see so many different Windrush celebrations taking place across Southwark.

To help everyone celebrate the council launched a Windrush 75 Commemoration fund.

We have been able to support Southwark’s communities in

holding events to celebrate the rich history and contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants in Southwark.

Many brilliant events took place; community breakfasts, school fun days, theatre shows, animated tours and musical performances.

The fund inspired arts and culture in the borough for residents’ enjoyment and education.

In total, 21 events have been funded so far and applications for a second round of the funding for events, from November to June 2024, are open now so do put in yours if you have a great idea.

75 years seems like a long time ago, but it is important that we use anniversaries like this to reflect on what communities can achieve and build when we work together and value each other.

asT moNTh, i spent most evenings talking to residents of Newington ward as we campaigned for the local by-election.

Sadly, the picture they painted of Southwark was one of neglect and complacency. It is no wonder that the Liberal Democrats are the only party who had increased their vote share when the results were announced on June 29th.

We heard the same issues over and over: the lack of affordable housing, the unacceptable disrepair people are living with and the appalling lack of cleanliness on our streets. I’ve

Yet time and time again, Southwark Labour claim the council has it all under control.

Everyone knows that we do not have enough affordable housing and we are simply not building enough either. It is especially apparent to Southwark’s Council’s housing boss, who admitted to a parliamentary committee that Labour’s pledge to build 11,000 new council homes is entirely “unfunded”.

Despite my calls for transparency, Labour are determined to stick with their misleading slogan. They are taking

residents for fools, keeping them in the dark about the reality of our current situation. They should apologize for misleading residents and take down their hoardings peddling this lie.

On our streets, we see litter and flytipping everywhere while rat infestations have sky-rocketed. But when our Liberal Democrat councillors tabled a constructive motion with common sense policies that could clean up our streets, Labour’s response left us shocked.

Labour’s response painted a fantasy of clean streets and a responsive council, who clean up almost all flytipping within 24 hours. When

was the last time you saw the Council respond to anything this quickly?!

The situation with damp and mould is appalling and unacceptable. The Council are leaving thousands to live in Dickensian conditions. Damp and Mould puts lives at risk. Labour claim they’ve learnt the lessons from repeated, egregious failures that have left vulnerable people in dangerous living conditions. I know that the countless residents I spoke to in Newington who have been living with damp and mould for years would beg to differ.

Just this month, an 88 year old residents has had to go to Southwark

News after the council has left her living with leak for over two years.

I’ve asked the Council to report themselves to the Housing Ombudsman.

The council clearly has a long way to go in tackling this blight.

The results in Newington were clear, Labour’s grip on Southwark is loosening. People are losing faith in the Labour, not least because they seem unable to acknowledge the reality for most living in Southwark.

The Liberal Democrats know this reality and we’re committed to improving Southwark. We remain the only party who can hold Labour to account locally.

The council has dug itself a CPZ-shaped hole

A

t last week’s Council Assembly, Labour’s Cllr James McAsh was palpably frustrated at facing twelve questions about Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs).

But the council has brought this tsunami of scrutiny on itself.

Over the last few months, Southwark Council has been pressing ahead with its drive to cover the entire borough with residents’ parking schemes. The consultations don’t give residents a ‘no’ option and campaigners complain the policy - absent from the Labour manifesto - has been ‘snuck in’.

At the council meeting, residents probed the Cabinet Member for Streets and Climate on everything from CPZs’ impact on local business to its implications on vulnerable residents.

And central to people’s upset is the sense this is being forced upon them, without consultation.

Cllr McAsh’s lack of sympathy is surprising given he wrote a 2019 blog post saying CPZs should only be implemented “with the consent of residents in any zone”.

On top of its explicit aim to reduce car ownership, Southwark Council says the borough-wide permit system is out of ‘fairness’. It says it’s not right that some wards pay for parking while others don’t. But maybe the fairest thing would be to simply ask people whether they want CPZs on their streets.

Dulwich Wood will be an interesting test case in this whole debacle. Anecdotally, the borough’s southernmost ward is uncongested, with parking usually freely available. Will Southwark impose a CPZ here, in the absence of public support or necessity?

However, as wildfires ravage Europe, many will argue car ownership must be reduced at all costs.

Residents repeatedly say they want cleaner air and take climate change seriously. Understandably, Southwark Council sees these as inviolable principles, the pursuit of which is sacrosanct.

There are signs that Southwark Council is inadvertently galvanising previously fractured opposition.

Campaigning against LTNs, for example, was largely conducted on a ward-by-ward basis. But there are now talks of anti-CPZ campaigners from across the borough mounting a legal challenge.

But while the latest wave of derision doesn’t reflect too well on the council, it’s hard to see it affecting votes given Labour is so strong here. The Lib Dem opposition's inability to take a firm stance also helps Labour.

Climate change is a real danger and our borough’s air quality is appalling. These are real problems requiring radical solutions. But treating residents’ opinions like inconvenient obstacles to be hurdled helps no one.

Section 80, Housing Act 2004 1. The London Borough of Southwark (“The Council”) in exercise of its powers under section 80 of the Housing Act 2004 ("the Act") hereby designates for selective licensing the areas described in paragraph 5

CITATION, COMMENCEMENT AND DURATION 2. These 2 Designations shall be known as the London Borough of Southwark Designations for Areas for Selective Licensing 2022. All privately rented residential accommodation situated within the designated areas must be licensed with the Council unless subject to sta tutory exemption as set out in paragraph 6.

3. The Designations are made on 6 December 2022. The Designations fall within a description of designations for which confirmation is required by Secretary of State. On 14 June 2023 the Secretary of State confirmed the Designations, and the Designations sh all come into force on 1 November 2023.

4. The Designations shall cease to have effect on 31 October 2028 (not more than 5 years) or earlier if the Council revokes the scheme under section 84 of the Act. AREA TO WHICH THE DESIGNATION APPLIES 5. These designations shall apply to the following areas of the London Borough of Southwark.

APPLICATION OF THE DESIGNATION 6. This designation applies to any house1 which is let or occupied under a tenancy or licence within the area described in paragraph 5 unless: a. the house is a house in multiple occupation [HMO] that falls within the nationally prescribed category of HMO that is required to be licensed as a ‘mandatory HMO’ under section 55(2)(a) Part 2 of the Act2; b. the house is a house in multiple occupation that falls within the prescribed category of HMO that is required to be licensed under the London Borough of Southwark Designation of an Area for Additional Licensing of Houses of Multiple Occupation made on 1 January 2022 under Section 56 of the Housing Act 20043; c. the tenancy or licence of the house has been granted by a registered social landlord4; d. the house is subject to an Interim or Final Management Order under Part 4 of the Act; e. the house is subject to a temporary exemption under section 86 of the Act; or f. the house is occupied under a tenancy or licence which is exempt under the Act or the occupation is of a building or part of a building so exempt as defined in Paragraph 5(f): Exempted tenancies or licences, Selective Licensing of Houses (Specified Exemptions) (England) Order 2006 SI 370/2006.

EFFECT OF THE DESIGNATION 6. Subject to sub paragraphs 6(a) to (f) every house in the area specified in paragraph 5 that is occupied under a tenancy or licence shall be required to be licensed under section 85 of the Act.6 7. The London Borough of Southwark will comply with the notification requirements contained in section 83 of the Act and shall maintain a register of all houses registered under this designation, as required under section 232 of the Act.5 If you are a landlord, managing agent or a tenant, or if you require information regarding this designation, or to apply for a licence, further information and assistance is available from the Council’s Private Rented Property Licensing Team by telephone on 020 7525 3114 or by email to resi@southwark.gov.uk, or by writing to Private Sector Housing Enforcement Service, PO Box 70063, Queens Road, London, SE15 2HP. The Designation may be inspected at the above address during office hours. All landlords, managing agents or tenants within the designated area should obtain advice to ascertain whether their property is affected by the Designation by contacting the Council’s Private Rented Property Licensing Team.

Upon the Designation coming into force any person having control of or who manages a licensable property without a licence or allows a licensed property to be occupied by more households or persons other than as authorised by a licence, is liable to prosecution and upon summary conviction is liable to an unlimited fine pursuant to the provisions of section 95 of the Housing Act 2004. A person who breaches a condition of a licence is liable upon summary conviction to an unlimited fine. The Council, as an alternative to initiating a prosecution, may pursue one or more of a range of other enforcement actions including the imposition of a financial penalty of up to £30,000 and/or taking management control of the unlicensed property. Further, where an offence has been committed an application may also be made by the Council and/or tenant under the provisions of section 96 and 97 of the Housing Act 2004 for a Rent Repayment Order to pay back up to 12 months’ rent, Housing Benefit or Universal Credit. No notice under section 21 of the Housing Act 1988 may be given in relation to an assured shorthold tenancy of the whole or part of an unlicensed house so long as it remains an unlicensed house.

THE THAMES WATER UTILITIES LIMITED (THAMES TIDEWAY TUNNEL) ORDER 2014 (AS AMENDED)1 SI 2014 NO.2384 (the “Order”) PRELIMINARY NOTICE OF INTENTION TO MAKE A GENERAL VESTING DECLARATION STATEMENT OF EFFECT OF PARTS II AND III OF THE COMPULSORY PURCHASE (VESTING DECLARATIONS) ACT 1981 AS MODIFIED BY ARTICLE 34 OF THE ORDER Power to make a general vesting declaration 1. Thames Water Utilities Limited (hereinafter called the “Thames Water”) may acquire any of the land described in the Schedule below by making a general vesting declaration pursuant to Article 28 and 34 of the Order and under section 4 of the Compulsory Purchase (Vesting Declarations) Act 1981. This has the effect, subject to paragraph 4 below, of vesting the land in Thames Water’s ownership at the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 below. A declaration may not be made before the end of a period of two months from the first publication of a notice which includes this statement except with the consent in writing of every occupier of the land affected.

Notices concerning general vesting declaration 2. As soon as may be after Thames Water make a general vesting declaration, they must serve notice of it on every occupier of any of the land specified in the declaration (except land where there is one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) and on every person who gives them information relating to the land in pursuance of the invitation contained in any notice. When the service of notices of the general vesting declaration is completed, a further period begins to run. This period, which must not be less than 28 days, will be specified in the declaration.

On the first day after the end of this period (“the vesting date”) the land described in the declaration will, subject to what is said in paragraph 4, vest in Thames Water, together with the right to enter on the land and take possession of it. Every person on whom Thames Water could have served a notice to treat in respect of his interest in the land (other than a tenant under one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) will be entitled to claim compensation for the acquisition of his interest in the land, with interest on the compensation from the vesting date.

Modifications with respect to certain tenancies 3. In the case of certain tenancies, the position stated above is subject to modifications. The modifications apply where the tenancy is either a “minor tenancy”, i.e. a tenancy for a year or a yearly tenancy or a lesser interest, or “a long tenancy which is about to expire”. The latter expression means a tenancy granted for an interest greater than a minor tenancy but having on the vesting date a period still to run which is not more than the period specified in the declaration for this purpose (which must not be more than a year). In calculating how long a tenancy has still to run, where an option to renew or to terminate it is available to either party, it shall be assumed that the landlord will take every opportunity open to him to terminate the tenancy while the tenant will use every opportunity to retain or renew his interest.

4. The modifications are that Thames Water may not exercise the right of entry referred to in paragraph 2 in respect of land subject to a tenancy described in paragraph 3 unless they first serve a notice to treat in respect of the tenancy and then serve every occupier of the land with a notice of their intention to enter and take possession after the period (not less than 14 days from the service of the notice) specified in the notice. The right of entry will be exercisable at the end of that period. The vesting of the land will be subject to the tenancy until the end of that period or until the tenancy comes to an end, whichever happens first.

A stratum of subsoil below land between the Falconbrook Pumping Station proposed drop shaft and the main tunnel, below land at York Road and Bridges Court and the River Thames. Approximately 0.4 hectares.

The upper surface of the stratum of the sub-soil is at a level equivalent to -26.2m (minus twenty six point two metres) OD (Ordnance Datum) or thereabout at its western boundary and -25.1m (minus twenty five point one metres) OD (Ordnance Datum) or thereabouts at its eastern boundary, and the lower surface of the stratum of the sub-soil is at a level equivalent to -42.7m (minus forty two point seven metres) OD (Ordnance Datum) or thereabout at its western boundary and -41.8m (minus forty one point eight metres) OD (Ordnance Datum) or thereabouts at its eastern boundary.

Cremorne Wharf Depot (RB Kensington and Chelsea)

(i) Land being former Council storage and maintenance depot Cremorne Wharf Depot, Lots Road, London SW10 0QJ and part of Thames Water operational Lots Road Pumping Station. Chelsea Embankment Foreshore (RB Kensington and Chelsea)

(i) Land being an area of River Thames foreshore, parts of Chelsea Embankment and an area of Ranelagh Gardens. By Brian Halford suRRey WeRe defeated by somerset by 24 runs in the T20 Vitality Blast semi-�inals at edgbaston last weekend.

After completing a steel-nerved win, Somerset went on to beat Essex by fourteen runs in the final.

Lewis Gregory’s side amassed a record points tally in the 2023 group stage and carried that confidence into a powerful performance to end Surrey’s hopes of winning the Blast for the first time since the tournament’s inaugural year, 2003.

In a nineteen-overs-per-side contest, Somerset made 142 for seven against accurate bowling led by Sean Abbott

(four for 23). Only one partnership passed 25 and only one batter reached 30 - Sean Dickson, whose unbeaten 30 (22 balls) was eked out in the closing overs with only the lower order for company.

Dickson’s diligent knock proved priceless as Surrey’s much-vaunted batting line mustered only 118 all out.

That included a highest score of just 22 from Tom Curran as Matt Henry took three for nineteen, Craig Overton three for 24 and Ben Green, leading wickettaker in this year’s Blast, three for 25.

Somerset were given their customary brisk start by Will Smeed (21, 17 balls) and Tom Banton (26, 20) but neither got beyond the cameo stage, falling

to faint edges to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, initially adjudged not out but overturned on review.

That set the tone for an innings of bitpart contributions with no lead role.

The batters lost further momentum as Tom Kohler-Cadmore sliced Abbott to third man and Tom Abell, hampered by a flurry of heavy drizzle which was creditably played through, missed a slog at Sam Curran and was bowled.

Two straightforward catches under his belt, Smith added a blinder when he dived high to his right to clutch Lewis Gregory’s edge off Chris Jordan. Abbott then delivered two wickets in five balls when Ben Green skied a return catch and Craig Overton fell to another fine

catch, by Tom Curran diving low at short third man.

Dickson had to be mindful of his side having so few wickets in hand in the closing overs, but batted with intelligence to keep his team in the game.

Surrey’s reply started badly, when Laurie Evans was bowled by Overton’s fourth ball, and then deteriorated. Jason Roy was adroitly caught by Dickson under a skier at extra cover and Will Jacks lifted Overton to long leg.

It was a wobbly 38 for three when Ben Green, leading wicket taker in this season‘s Blast, came on and 38 for four after Sam Curran chipped Green’s first ball to mid off.

Jordan cleared the ropes twice but perished attempting to land a third in the crowd, caught by Smeed at deep mid-wicket. Somerset’s catching was exemplary and when Tom Curran’s 15ball 22 was terminated by another safe boundary take, by Abell, Surrey’s last two wickets needed to find 40 runs.

In the competition’s 42-year history, Ark Globe is only the second inner London school ever to make the podium in the Junior Boys final and the points total achieved makes Ark Globe performance the best by an inner London school in this national competition.

Executive Principal of the Elephant & Castle school, Matt Jones OBE, said: “The students’ performance and conduct were brilliant – officials from the English Schools Athletics Association came up to tell me how great and polite our boys were.

“Our team had pride in their community and were justifiably delighted about their achievement. The whole experience has created lifelong memories for everyone involved.”

The students’ determination, commitment, hard work, and resilience paid off and Ark Globe were awarded the second place with captains Ezekiel OluMicah and Jomiloju Hughes collecting the ESAA plate. A special mention goes out to Jomiloju Hughes, Year 8, who jumped 12.71m in the triple jump competition.

This broke the championship record and is now recognised as the best performance ever in the competition’s history.

James Gardner, Director of Sport, said he was “incredibly proud of each and every athlete”, adding, “this is a moment that will stick with me for the rest of my career.”

In total, the Junior Boys team accumulated 554 points across 80m Hurdles, 100m, 200m, 300m, 800m, 1500m, Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump, Shot, Discus, Javelin, Hammer, and Relay.

The team’s performance is even more

impressive given that the school site does not have a single blade of grass, let alone a sports field on which to practise.

What is equally impressive is the fact that none of Globe’s athletes attend an athletics club outside of school. They have learnt everything through curriculum PE lessons, extra-curricular mornings, lunch time and after school clubs and at local, regional, and national school

competitions.

Principal Jones added: “Just three years ago this would have been unthinkable, but with the right adults to inspire our students, the support of the wider staff community - the catering team making our special nutritious smoothies, teachers cover for PE competitions, etc - the whole Globe team have achieved something special.”

After qualifying for the national final of English Schools Track & Field Cup with the second-highest points’ total in the country, eighteen of Ark Globe Academy’s Junior Boys athletics team set off to Chelmsford to complete against the top twelve schools in the country, many of which are established state, grammar, and independent schools.

The English Schools’ Athletic Association was formed in 1925 allowing schools and athletes to compete at regional, national, and international level. Ark Globe was welcomed as a new school to the finals and

The Millwall boss changed his no.1 part way through last season as Bartosz Bialkowski was replaced by George Long ten games into the Championship campaign.

But Rowett says that places are there to be won during preseason.

Asked about the goalkeeping situation, he told our paper: "I think the opportunities are there for every player to stamp their mark on the team preseason, that's for any position in the squad. You have an idea as a manager of what a strong starting eleven looks like but there's always that flexibility.

"There's always players that look really good pre-season that it challenges that thinking. So we want that competition, we want that quality amongst the group.

"And then the best eleven usually will start and it's up to them to fight and keep the shirt.

But I think there's a lot of work to be done and games to be played and opportunities for people to impress."

Both keepers got 45 minutes in the opening friendly game against Gillingham.

Bialkowski had little to do in the first half before the League Two side improved after the break and forced Long into action on multiple occasions.

The two goalkeepers will be hoping they get the nod for the opening game of the new Championship season against Middlesbrough on August 5.

The 33-year-old left the muddy pitches of the EFL behind to experience a sunnier life down under when he moved to Perth Glory in 2022.

It brought to an end his fifteen-year long career as an established name in English football, playing for clubs such as Sheffield Wednesday and Bolton in the football league.

But Beevers is enjoying the new challenge of the A-league despite its differences to what he was used to.

The centre-back told our paper: "I've just done my first season over here. It was good season for me personally, but as a team we finished ninth out of twelve. But it was a pretty tight league, and we were a few points from

getting top six [and into the play-offs].

"I came over here for the experience as well as to succeed as a player. And my family are enjoying it as well so it's all good so far.

"It's a bit strange for me having played in England for 15 years. It's very different in a sense that [in the EFL] you're either battling for promotion or battling to stay in the league. It's usually one of the two each season, whereas over here there's no relegation so you can only win the league or win the cup at the end. So it's very different but you still want to be successful wherever you play.

"I wanted to play abroad at some point in my career and I felt as though the timing was good to spread my wings and try something new. There are elements of the game I do miss in England and I do want to play in England again. Me coming out here is not me retiring. I just want to experience something else and hopefully come back and play again in

England at some point."

Beevers said he experienced a smooth transition to moving to the other side of the world, thanks in part to the number of Brits and Irish already living in Australia.

"Especially over here in Perth in comparison to East Australia, there's quite a lot of English, Scottish and Irish here anyway because they've emigrated," he said. "So you find yourself in a place in the world where it's very English, so to speak. It's such a beautiful place.

"It's exactly what it says on the tin, Perth. You get your white sandy beaches and great weather all year round."

Beevers still keeps an eye out on his old clubs and has particular affection for the Lions, where he initially joined on loan in October 2012 before signing permanently two months later.

His final game was the League One play-off final against Barnsley in 2016 where Beevers scored but Millwall

lost 3-1.

He added: "I loved it at Millwall.

It was probably one of if not the highlight of my career. Looking as an outsider, Millwall, everyone [says] it's this yob club but it's really not.

It's such a friendly club and everyone who worked there was fantastic and the fans are great as well, just how passionate they are.

"One thing I did learn as a player is that if you knuckle down and work hard, [the fans] will rate you and respect you. That's what you do.

But in the same breath, if you don't knuckle down and work hard they'll turn against you. That's just Millwall down to a tee.

"I enjoyed every minute of it. My family moved down and bought a house in London and my little girl was born down here. And even to this day my mum, dad and wife will be talking about clubs that have been welcoming to families and Millwall were right up there. It's such a big family club."

The Yorkshire club have returned to the second-tier after winning the League One play-off final 1-0 against Barnsley in May. But loyal supporters face shelling out the most to watch games - with Millwall sixth on the list for highest adult season ticket prices.

The new season is weeks away from kicking off but fans of clubs in the Championship have taken to social media in recent days to rage against high prices to watch live football.

A season ticket gives supporters the chance to claim the same seat for home games across all league matches in the division.

Most clubs in the Championship offer a sliding scale of different prices, depending on age and sometimes other factors.

Southwark News has compared the cheapest adult season ticket prices available for fans of clubs across all 24 teams.

The research found that Sheffield Wednesday's cheapest adult ticket was £595, with Middlesbrough (£590) and Norwich (£534.50) following in second and third.

Millwall sit sixth in the table, with the cheapest adult season ticket at The Den being priced at £441.

This would allow fans a permanent seat in the Zampa's Family Stand for the 2023/24 campaign.

At the other end of the scale, Birmingham City fans could access adult season tickets for £249, the

cheapest deal in the Championship based on a comparison of club websites.

Millwall's London rivals QPR offer the second-cheapest deal with some adult season tickets for Loftus Road coming in at £278.

The Championship's opening weekend is now just over two weeks away with fans anticipating another entertaining and drama-filled season.

The Lions kick off with a trip to Middlesbrough on August 5 before a Carabao Cup game against Reading (Aug 8) and league matches against Bristol City (Aug 12) and Norwich (Aug 20).

Before any of that Millwall still have two friendlies to overcome against Charlton (July 25) and Fortuna Sittard (July 29).

We've lost a few lads through loans and a couple of lads who left last year. Four or five went out the door and we've bought a couple in. So bringing a couple more in would be great if that means strengthening the squad.

"Otherwise what we've got now is still

a good and competitive squad. So if we can bring a couple extra to strengthen our squad then great but if they're not going to strengthen [us] than what we've got is great."

Forward thinking Millwall boss delighted with strike options on goal-laded day for frontmen Kiro Evans GaRy RoWeTT was left revelling at the potential of his forward line after a day which saw two millwall players hit hat-tricks in different games.

Kevin Nisbet struck three goals including a penalty and a free-kick - in a friendly away at Sutton on Tuesday night.

And earlier in the day Andreas Voglsammer did the same in a behind closed doors match against Brentford B, with Zian Flemming getting two.

Sharpshooter Nisbet joined last month from Hibernian, potentially offering Millwall's attack an extra edge ahead of the new season.

The Lions already have the likes of top scorer Tom Bradshaw, who grabbed seventeen league goals last season, and Flemming, who notched up fifteen.

The Millwall manager is pleased

with the attacking options at his disposal and is looking forward to getting them all on the pitch at the same time.

"We've always tried to add goals to the team bit-by-bit," Rowett said. "We spoke about this last season that we were perhaps a striker short in our squad, and they're never easy to find. I think Kevin certainly will add some great quality to us. Flem [Flemming] scored a couple earlier, Vogy [Voglsammer] scored three.

"Again it's pre-season but you still have to stick the ball in the back of the net and we had some very good finishes from all of our players.

And some bright moments.

"I think bit-by-bit people like Kevin and Joe Bryan keep our squad improving all the time. We haven't had one game yet where we've put them all together in the starting line-up so again you're looking at little bits and pieces but

it's coming together quite nicely."

Millwall's strength in depth in the attacking areas was underlined with that win at the VBS Community Stadium.

While Nisbet got his hat-trick, there were also plenty of plaudits for his support act of Duncan Watmore and Romain Esse, both of whom gave Sutton's defenders plenty to worry about throughout the 90 minutes.

Rowett added: "I thought Duncan and Rom looked good today, just either side of the striker. Duncan just effortlessly glides into good areas and Rom shows those lovely little touches to get out of tight positions. He's got so much quality."

Watmore and Esse played behind Nisbet in a fluid 3-4-2-1 shape, and Watmore revealed he's a big fan of the tactic.

He told our paper: "I love that formation, I love those positions.

I like getting in the pocket on the half-turn and trying to be positive and get at people. And I think we linked up really well today as a front three. We really enjoyed it.

"Some games go like that, some games you don't find as much space but we found a lot of space and did a lot of good things. I really enjoyed it."

Nisbet's first goal came after he picked the ball up from Esse on the edge of the box, adjusted his body, and drilled a shot low into the bottom corner.

Esse, 18, was involved in the second as well as he won a penalty after being pulled back in the box. Nisbet dispatched the spot kick calmly, just as he did against Gillingham in the opening preseason game.

Nisbet's third was a sumptuous free-kick from 22 yards out which he planted beyond the Sutton keeper.

Burnley are believed to have had up to four bids knocked back for the Dutch playmaker this summer, who was one of Millwall's shining lights last season.

Other clubs are reported to have an eye on the 24-year-old.

But Lions boss Rowett said this type of noise is part of life in the transfer window.

He said: "There's always going to be speculation linking us to players and, if our players have done well, linking them [away].

"That's natural for any Championship football club, there's going to be ten stories a week on different players, so that's just something we have to navigate through.

"And when we make signings, then things will become a little bit clearer and if people end up leaving that will also become clear. It's just part and parcel of being a Championship manager.

"We just have to accept there's going to be lots of speculation, some of its going to be true and some of its not going to be true."

Flemming made 43 Championship appearances last season, scoring 15 goals and registering three assists.
