Thamesmead could see £23million being invested into local buses under plans outlined in this year’s Autumn Statement.

The Government revealed plans on November 22 to fund a rapid transit bus network in Thamesmead.

The news comes as part of the Docklands 2.0 project, revealed in July by Housing Secretary Michael Gove, which could see “tens of thousands” of homes being added around the River Thames.

The scheme reportedly looks to improve transport links from east to west in the capital, while also transforming areas such as Charlton Riverside and Thamesmead in Greenwich as well as Beckton and Silvertown in Newham.

HM Treasury documents on this year’s Autumn Statement said: “Subject to business case approval, the Government will also provide £23million for a bus network

to unlock housing in the ‘Docklands 2.0’ as part of the £150million allocation to London from the Brownfield, Infrastructure and Land Fund.”

A transport strategy prepared by Transport for London (TfL) in December 2020 shows plans to link areas of Thamesmead such as the town centre and the Moorings to the Elizabeth line stations in Woolwich and Abbey Wood.

The documents said that the new service, alongside the Elizabeth line, would provide 8,000 homes and 5,500 jobs to the area.

TfL has also outlined plans to extend the DLR from Gallions Reach to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead after sending a business case to the Government in June.

However, no mention of the planned extension was included in this year’s Autumn Statement. The transport authority has claimed the project would allow for up to 30,000 new homes to be built across Greenwich and Newham.

the company planned on building up to 2,800 new homes in South Thamesmead, with the housing association reportedly owning 65per cent of the land in the area.

John Lewis, Peabody’s Executive Director Thamesmead, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) there was potential for 15,000 new homes in Thamesmead, and that SE28 is the only postcode in London without a rail or Tube station.

He added: “The Government’s investment in a bus rapid transit scheme is a positive step towards improving connectivity for Thamesmead, which will benefit current residents and newcomers alike.

"However, the joint venture of Peabody and Lendlease will also continue to support TfL, along with other partners, in progressing proposals to extend the DLR to Thamesmead. Bringing the DLR to Thamesmead is essential to unlocking those 15,000 homes at the Waterfront, as well as 10,000 homes north of the river, and thousands of jobs.”

Peabody said in their latest report that they owned 65per cent of the land in Thamesmead.

Rachel McLean, Chief Finance Officer at TfL, told the LDRS that the transport authority welcomed the extra funding for the bus network, but was disappointed the Government had not yet confirmed its share of capital investment for TfL. She said investment was needed to fund critical projects such as manufacturing the new fleet of Piccadilly line trains.

She added: “At this stage London is being forced to exist without the multi-year ‘London-style’ funding agreements that are being introduced elsewhere, despite the Underground being considered a national asset which has always previously received support. Investment in London’s transport has direct and substantial benefits for jobs and growth outside the capital – whether through direct manufacturing or supply chains.

"We are running out of time to plan sensibly for March 2024 and the Government is putting our plans to grow ridership and support jobs and economic growth in London and across the country at risk.”

PaTienTs aT king’s will now be able to play on game consoles to distract them from being in hospital - in memory of a former patient and avid gamer.

Three hand-held gaming consoles have been funded by the charity Gaming the Mind to keep younger patients entertained during their stay at King's College Hospital.

Staff applied for funding in memory of Jonathan Carroll, from Dulwich, who was an avid gamer and King’s patient.

Jonathan sadly passed away in April aged 41 after a battle with a liver condition.

Paul McKie, specialist social worker (Liver Transplant) at the Denmark Hill site, explained: “Jonathan had Alagille syndrome, a genetic condition affecting the liver, and as a result, he spent over 12 months with us at King’s receiving care and treatment.

"He found the use of a handheld console a distraction and help when he was pretty much confined to the ward through ill health and unable to go home.

“When Jonathan was with us, he enjoyed playing on gaming consoles to break the boredom. There is clear evidence that gaming can help reduce patients’ stress and anxiety during a hospital stay, and we felt that helping to keep other people entertained would be a wonderful tribute to Jonathan.

“Jonathan’s gaming avatar has also been made into a sticker attached to each gaming console, in Jonathan’s memory.”

Jonathan’s mother, Marilyn Kanes, added: “Despite constantly battling medical problems, Jonathan stayed amazingly cheerful and always had a smile.

"Games were his life support system, particularly during prolonged periods in hospital. They brought him so much fun and enjoyment, and it is wonderful to think that other patients at King’s can now share something he loved so much.”

Jonathan Carroll was an avid gamer.

By Isabel Ramirez The emeRGency department at king's college hospital - one of the busiest in london - now has two more beds following a recent refurbishment.

The Denmark Hill-based hospital received a £852,000 investment, which has been used to modernise the area

where patients who require more support are treated.

The Majors area of the Emergency Department now has 17 beds, compared to 15 previously.

It has also been kitted out with new furniture and LED skylights, as well as new artwork on the walls depicting images from the local area – including Brixton and nearby Ruskin Park.

The Emergency Department at King's sees around 130,000 patients a year.

The new facility has started treating patients this week but was officially opened on Friday 3 November by Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, as well as staff from the Trust, and representatives from King’s College Hospital Charity.

I used to write short horror stories at break times. It's like an escape," she said.

"It was always my hobby but now I'm trying to make it a career."

After leaving school at the City of London Academy, Sophie said she became a dental nurse so writing had to take a backseat.

"At the time I really wanted to help people. But I've done this for a while now and I want to follow my passion.

"It's my dream to become a successful writer. I don't want to just be one of those authors that not many people have heard of. I want to be important."

She decided to publish it herself on Amazon in September, commenting that getting a publisher wasn't really an option at the time.

"I don't have the money for one," she continued, "I did send it to one person but they're quite picky and I just wanted to get it out there.

Her advice to anyone else wanting to follow their passion: "We grew up extremely poor - don't let that stop you.

I would always say chase your dreams regardless."

She added that she's grateful for her two sisters, who are her biggest supporters and a sequel is 'already in the works.'

Bermondsey dental nurse who 'dreamed of being an author' releases her first book

By Isabel Ramirez a BeRmondsey woman, 28, who has worked as a dental nurse for ten years but 'always dreamed of being an author,' has released her first book.

Burden and Beyond is a sci-fi novel about a university student who has recurring nightmares about impending doom coming her way.

Author Sophie Irish, who has lived in Bermondsey her whole life, said the book took ten years to finish. "I struggled to find the time as I work a lot," she told us, explaining that her full-time work has had to come first.

Despite this, she said writing is what she's always wanted to do: "At school,

albin and sons memorial service To reTurn wiTh a gosPel choir for 2023

Thousands aRe expected at this year's memorial service hosted by one of the uk's oldest funeral directors.

Since 1999, Albin and Sons have hosted an annual service in their memorial garden for the people of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe to remember their loved ones.

The Memorial Garden Remembrance Service usually welcomes up to 2,000 people and will be held on Wednesday 6 December. This year, those attending will enjoy a gospel choir as part of the event.

After the late Barry Albin-Dyer OBE passed away in 2015, his sons took the reins at the family-run business.

Simon Dyer, joint managing director at Albin and Sons, said: "The garden is a special place my father created in the heart of Bermondsey so people could have their loved ones close by.

"It's a small place, Bermondsey, but it's quite big at the same time. Many people have connections to the area.

He continued: "The garden is an important place now, and the service is an opportunity to give back to the community, celebrating and remembering all those loved ones we've lost. People really appreciate coming together at this time of year."

In the garden, there's a Christmas tree up from early December where families can collect little gold stars to write a message to their loved ones.

Simon explained: "They hand them to us on the night and during the service, we put them up on the tree.

"The ashes of all the stars from previous years are gathered together in an ark, which is brought out for the service every year."

After the service, there's mulled wine and Christmas puddings to warm everyone up.

The event is free but they will be collecting donations for the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Foundation and charity Child

Bereavement UK. Simon added that on the night, they are hoping to open the new extension they started earlier this year for guests afterwards.

Network Rail announces south London disruption in February half term

By Herbie Russell souTh london rail passengers have been warned of disruption this February half term due to rail works.

Network Rail said no trains will run on parts of the National Rail and London Overground networks from Saturday, February 10, to Sunday, February 18.

The upgrades between Crystal Palace, Tulse Hill and Peckham Rye are part of a £400 million investment in track and signalling improvements across South London.

From Saturday, February 10 to Friday 16, Thameslink passengers travelling between Herne Hill, Wimbledon and Sutton are being advised to use London Buses or alternative National Rail, London Trams or London Underground routes.

Southern passengers travelling between London Bridge and Streatham or Streatham Hill will have to use alternative routes on London Buses and a limited replacement bus service will also run.

Passengers on the West Norwood and Crystal Palace to Norwood Junction or Beckenham Hill sections will be directed to alternative London Buses, London Trams and London Overground routes.

London Overground services between Canada Water and Clapham Junction are also suspended from Saturday 10 to Sunday 18 February.

A rail replacement bus service will operate to help passengers to complete their journeys during this closure.

Network Rail said the improvement works will see the old and unreliable 1980s signalling equipment replaced with the latest technology.

Lucy McAuliffe, Network Rail’s Sussex route director, said: “While there is never a good time to close the railway, the half term is significantly quieter, and by doing the work on consecutive days we can minimise the overall impact on passengers.

“So please plan ahead, look out for further updates and follow the travel advice.”

By Isabel Ramirez a chRisTmas market is coming to Bermondsey for one day only, with a free wheel of fortune to play and a guest appearance from santa.

This Saturday, December 2, Bermondsey Square will be transformed into a market place bringing back a hint of its former self with a festive twist.

Guests will be treated to a free drink and a mince pie - but it is advised to get there early as this will be on a firstcome-first-serve basis.

A DJ will be providing the day's soundtrack of Christmas classics.

You can also enjoy a variety of drinks from the vintage bar.

Free arts and crafts promise to keep the children entertained whilst they wait for Santa to visit.

There will also be the chance to win prizes by taking a free spin on a Wheel of Fortune.

This event is funded by the Bermondsey Square Community Fund which awards grants for the marketing, animation and promotion of the Bermondsey Square Estate and making a positive contribution to the wider neighbourhood and community of Bermondsey.

By Isabel Ramirez An 86-YEAr-OLD pensioner from dulwich, who had surgery on her hip five years ago, is thanking a local charity for lifting her spirits when she was 'very low.'

Hilda, 86, has been part of Link Age Southwark for around five years and has called it 'a great service' for older people.

The Southwark-based charity provides support to older people in the borough who are feeling lonely or isolated.

"I had a major operation on my hip five years ago," Hilda told us, "and they organised for me to have visitors."

Whilst she recovered from her

operation, she said their befriending scheme really got her through - where the charity matches an older member with a volunteer who will give them company.

She explained: "They matched me with a lovely lady who would come regularly to spend time with me, or take me for a walk in the park or do little errands."

"I was very low then, so that was great - it really cheered me up."

Now, Hilda attends a singing group they put on once a week - helped by a 'lovely' driver who gets her and a neighbour to the classes safely.

"In old age, you're stuck in the house it can be very lonely."

"I look forward to going to this singing

group. We sing all sorts of things which I remember from my school days when I was in a choir."

Hilda grew up in Sri Lanka and left after she got married. She said due to her husband's work with the UN she travelled the world, before settling in Britain in the '60s.

They moved to Dulwich a few years later and she started a job in international development with the civil service.

"I very much liked working," she said, commenting that she would have carried on if she hadn't been forced to retire. Back then, they were very strict that we retire at 60."

Along with Hilda, lots of other residents regularly use Link Age

Southwark's services and in the past year alone, they have supported 867 people.

As it relies on donations, the charity is taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2023 between 28 November and 5 December, to raise vital funds to support its work and the provision of vital transport services for older people, and people living with dementia and their carers. They are aiming to raise £16,000 in just one week.

Each £1 donated is matched by money from the pledge pot so your donation is doubled.

It starts on the 28 November - you can donate online at linkagesouthwark.org from midday. The campaign closes on Tuesday 5 December.

Prevention Grant, and increasing funding for Discretionary Housing

Payments (DHP).

Another of its demands – unfreezing the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) to cover the bottom 30 per cent of rents in the local area – was pledged in the government’s Autumn Statement on Wednesday, November 23.

Cllr Helen Dennis said: “We are committed to playing our part through partnerships with local organisations such as Robes but we need for the government to urgently review its policies to prevent refugees, people who have sought sanctuary here from countries like Afghanistan and Sudan, becoming homeless this winter.”

Residents slept rough for local homelessness charity PeoPle slePT rough outside southwark cathedral to raise money and awareness for a local homelessness charity on Friday, november 24.

Organised by The Robes Project charity, the Southwark Cathedral SleepOut 2023, seeks to highlight the stark realities of life without shelter.

Southwark councillor Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Development, was among those braving the chill.

The Chaucer ward councillor said: “This night is about amplifying the voices of those that need our support and highlighting the need for national action.

“I want to use my position to raise

awareness and money for the Robes Project that works tirelessly to support others.”

Southwark Council has stated that, in recent months, it’s seen a “dramatic increase” in homelessness applications resulting from Home Office cases.

It said the government’s push to process asylum claims means it could be set to receive an additional 1,200 homelessness applications.

Southwark Council is writing to the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities, and the Home Secretary, requesting urgent action to deal with the crisis in rough sleeping and temporary accommodation.

By Isabel Ramirez a woman from Bermondsey, who stole will.i.am's heart in her blind audition on The Voice, has flown through to the next round.

Hayley Chart, who grew up on the Arnold Estate near Tooley Street, appeared on Saturday night's show, and wowed crowds and judges with her rendition of Nina Simone's 'Sinnerman.'

The 52-year-old mum of three said her plan was to get everyone entertained.

"I'm not your everyday singer," she told us. "I'm quite mad. I sing all the time and I've got a lot more to give but with this song, I just wanted to get everyone up."

After experiencing the loss of her mum and sister eighteen months ago, just four weeks apart, Hayley said she reached a very low point. "I gave up for a while," she explained.

"It was my fiancée, Jeremy, who got me back on track with it."

Hayley said she and Jeremy have been engaged for thirty years and he supported her to audition for The Voice, commenting: "He's my soundman."

Though life has been hard for her at times, she said singing has helped her cope with the pain: "Music is my medicine - it's kept me moving forward."

On the show, which returned earlier this month on ITV, hopeful singers begin their audition with the celebrity judges turned away. If the judge likes what they hear, they hit a button to spin around and reveal the face behind the voice.

At her audition, her powerful pipes caused two judges to turn around - first was Will.I.Am, followed swiftly by Olly Murs. "I couldn't believe it," she said.

"When you're walking onto the stage, you're just praying someone turns around."

Her choice of song was helped by her son, Fabian. "He sings it every day," she told the judges.

On hearing her performance, Olly commented: "I just think that was

She had the audience erupting in laughter when asked to choose her judge, and she jokingly asked: "What can you do for me Olly, baby, are you taking me to high places?"

But she ultimately chose Will.i.am who called her a 'firecracker.' The world-famous singer and producer said to Hayley: "I wish I grew up with you. The energy is infectious.

To persuade her to choose him, he added: "It's endless what we can do, it all depends on hard work and effort."

Through to the next round, Hayley

will be competing against another member of 'Team Will' for her place in the competition.

Outside of The Voice, she regularly busks and gigs in pubs. Recently, she has made quite a name for herself online and has amassed over a million views on TikTok. "I was spotted by a house producer in

the street one day and now I have three songs on Spotify. It's crazy."

Speaking to our paper, she said even though she lives in Buckinghamshire now, she's 'a Bermondsey girl at heart' and her family still lives there.

"I'll never forget my roots. Everything I've gone through and where I've come from has made me who I am today.

Work begins on Rotherhithe affordable housing development on site of Michael Caine's birthplace

woRk has begun on a Rotherhithe development providing 100 per cent affordable housing.

62 affordable homes, including seven social rent flats, seven social rent duplexes and 48 sharedownership flats, are set for completion in summer 2025.

The Peabody housing development on Lower Road is where St Olave’s Hospital used to be – an infirmary and workhouse dating back to 1742.

Most of the hospital was demolished in the 1990s to make way for the Ann Moss Way estate although its gatehouse still remains.

Last month Rotherhithe ward Councillor Kath Whittam, who visited the site for its groundbreaking event marking the start of construction, said the new homes were “fabulous”.

“As a ward councillor I am very glad to see the site go ahead, and it is particularly nice when the scheme is 100 per cent affordable,” she said.

“I’d like to thank Peabody and Thomas Sinden for putting such a strong scheme together, which will give our residents the chance of a fabulous new home.”

The £18 million project, delivered by construction contractor Thomas Sinden, will have balconies or terraces attached to every flat.

There will also be a communal roof

terrace, new outdoor areas and play spaces for families.

Local charity Bermondsey Community Kitchen (BCK) also attended the groundbreaking event having accepted a £1,000 donation from Thomas Sinden.

BCK, which helps teens and young adults get City and Guilds Professional Cookery qualifications, will use the money to help support local volunteers.

Angela Wood, Deputy Executive Director of Development at Peabody, said: “The positive impact of new affordable homes cannot be underestimated.

“Peabody already works closely with many communities in Southwark, and we’re pleased to have started delivering more new homes for people locally.”

The new development will mean the demolition of a derelict single-storey nursing home and portacabins.

The site used to host St Olave’s Hospital, a Georgian hospital built in 1742 and famously the birthplace of legendary actor Sir Michael Caine.

Rotherhithe SEN sports club could close next year after 17 years of serving local children

By Isabel Ramirez A Rotherhithe sports club, which has served over 1000 children with special educational needs over nearly two decades, may be forced to close in March after the manager said he 'missed' the date to apply for funding.

Glyn Davies, who is in charge of delivering sport in SEN schools across the borough, said he set up the Saturday Club seventeen years ago after he saw a 'real need' for it.

"Hardly anyone was working with the kids with profound needs," he told us. "So I set up the club with some of the school sports funding and then every year after that, Southwark Council has funded it."

Every Saturday during term time, there are four 90-minute sessions where members with SEN get one-to-

one support to engage in sports and interact with other young people.

Over the years, Glyn said they have worked with over 1000 families and the sessions are free, with families having to pay just £25 for an annual membership.

However, this could all change next March, when their funding will be cut off after Glyn said he missed the date to reapply.

"I got my dates mixed up and missed the cut-off date," he explained. "It was just a simple mistake."

"I managed to get an extension until next March - but [the council] won't entertain me putting a bid in now."

Without the funding, which would have kept them going for another three years, Glyn said he would be forced to close the club.

"We currently have 80 members who come every week," he continued.

"What's going to happen to all of them

if we close?"

Syed Alam, whose son - 8-year-old Marzuq - has been attending the club for the last few years, said his child had made ’significant improvements’ since joining.

“Before going to the club, my son could not even pick up a ball and he didn’t really speak to anyone," Syed told us. "But now since being a part of the club, he can throw one just like everyone else, he does trampolining, and he has even started to make friends.”

The father from Peckham continued: “Every Friday evening before the club he is excited and he plans the journey.

Without it he would decline in his social skills and all the progress he has made because of the amazing staff.”

New sculpture that adults and kids can 'play on' pops up in Bankside

A new 'pink and blue furry' sculpture, that invites people to 'play' on it, has arrived in Bankside.

The interactive pop-up is part of the Business Improvement District (BID) Better Bankside's plan to encourage people to spend time in the area.

They have collaborated with property developer JTRE London to erect the ‘playable’ Urban Playground sculpture outside the Triptych building in Bankside.

Asked where Marzuq would go if this club was forced to close, Syed said that given the needs of his son and the other members, they would struggle to find another club. “There is nowhere else like this,” he said.

Another parent, Kylie Crawley, started a petition to save the club which has garnered nearly 1,500 signatures in less than a week.

"As a group - as a family - we need to do everything we can to keep the club open," Kylie said, "If we don't it will be a real injustice to our children."

Glyn said in order to stay open, they will need to find another source of funding, but with time running out - they will need to do this fast. "We

need about £45,000 per year.

"I want to work with the council to keep being able to provide this service - not against them."

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, has contacted the council about the issue. In a statement, he told us: “The club is an amazing resource for local families and the young people who seem to love it. There seems to be a fragile ecosystem keeping it afloat but it must not be capsized by the council’s ill-considered approach. It’s too valuable to do many local people to see it lost and the council must work with the club, me and others to work out how best to ensure it can keep helping so many disadvantaged young people and their families.”

We asked Southwark Council if they would consider the requests of the club, but they did not respond at the time of going to press.

Dulwich primary up in arms over proposed bollard removal

By isabel Ramirez PaRenTs, TeacheRs and kids at a dulwich primary are campaigning to stop the council from removing the bollards outside their school, which they say currently keep the road safe.

The proposed removal of the bollards is causing quite a stir at Bessemer Grange Primary School in Dulwich, with parents and teachers worried it could lead to 'children getting harmed.'

In 2018, the collapsible metal bollards, which are manually erected from the ground during opening and closing hours to stop cars from driving directly outside the school, were installed by the council as part of the school streets scheme.

The school is located across two opposite sites on Nairne Grove. The closure covers a short length of road extending from Nairne Grove on the east to Nairne Grove, Woodfarrs and Dylways junction to the west.

It is one of eighteen school streets in Southwark, where motor traffic is restricted, in order to improve road safety and reduce the impact of air pollution.

But Southwark Council officers have announced they will be removing them in January and instead use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to restrict traffic - with which car users will face a fine if they drive down the road during the prohibited hours.

Emily Carter, a mother with two children at the school, said she does not think this will be enough to deter cars. "The cameras don't always work," she told us, "people will either take the fine or they won't know about the road closure and will use it anyway to cut through."

She explained that for the last five years, when walking or cycling to and from school, children can cross the road, without having to think about cars 'whizzing past.'

"It’s a really lovely community at the moment and we’re really concerned that if they remove them, some children will get harmed."

She added that they were given no information that the council was planning to remove them and they were not consulted prior to receiving the news.

Parents are not the only ones with concerns. Seven-year-old, Aidan, a pupil at the school, said: "I don't want the bollards to be removed because then the cars could drive in and hurt some kids if they're going across the road."

He told us he would be 'really worried' about people's safety if they were taken away.

Another pupil, Zac, 10, said as he walks to school alone, the bollards are a 'real help.' "I walk to school alone and the bollards really help me. I was here for Year 2 without them and I had to be on my highest guard to make sure I wasn't hit by a car."

Ten-year-old Polly, said: "Kids might be so used to the fact the bollards have always been there for them, that they might forget and walk across the road whilst a car is coming."

Asked if the cameras would be an effective replacement Olive, 9, said: "Why do we need cameras - when these do the same job?" Except - she pointed out the cameras will stop cars when an accident 'may have already happened.'

Elizabeth Whitehead, Head of School at Bessemer Primary School, said: “Our school which has over 600 pupils is 'split site' so covers both sides of the road, Nairne Grove.

"Parents and children need to cross the road to collect children from each side of the road and staff also escort children from site to site while the barriers are still up.

"As a school, we worked closely with parents, local councillors and other residents to ensure it was a success.

School staff have been supporting the scheme by putting the barriers up and down, something which we have always been happy to do.”

In a case study analysis of the school streets scheme at Bessemer Grange

published last year TfL noted that the number of cars, vans and other motor vehicles fell by 82 per cent.

The TfL report also reads: “It is likely that the use of collapsible bollards preventing access to motorised vehicles to the School Street during the closure period has contributed to the low traffic environment and comfortable use of the carriageway by people walking and on

bikes.”

As part of their campaign to urge Southwark Council to keep the bollards, the parents have launched a petition - which has over 700 signatures so far.

They said they have a meeting with the council this week to talk about this issue - but added that if their asks are not listened to they will be staging a protest outside on the street.

Given the council's current mission to make streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians, with the Streets for People strategy, we asked the council the reason why they are planning to remove the bollards - but they did not respond at the time of going to press.

New JD Wetherspoon pub set to hit Waterloo

local PunTeRs are set to get a new Jd wetherspoon pub at waterloo railway station.

The pub giant has submitted a licence application to Lambeth Council for a new pub called The Lion and the Unicorn.

The Wetherspoon boozer will occupy units 3,4,5 and 6 on the upper ground of The Sidings, a shopping area beneath platforms 20 to 24.

The application for The Lion and The Unicorn states: “The premises will operate as a traditional JD Wetherspoon public house with no music or similar entertainment and with provision of a full food menu from 11.30am to 11pm every day and a breakfast menu from opening to noon. There is no provision for outdoor consumption of food and drink. There will be no specific area for smokers at the premises and any customer wishing to smoke will need to leave The Sidings to do so.”

Fans of the pub chain will be pleased by the news, especially given JD Wetherspoon’s recent struggles.

Over the last twenty months, roughly 35 Wetherspoon pubs have closed due to rising costs in the UK. The Capitol in Forest Hill, a converted 1920s cinema dubbed ‘London’s grandest Wetherspoon’ closed its doors last month.

Lambeth Council will now consider The Lion and The Unicorn licensing application.

Founded in 2014, the BID is a partnership of local businesses whose teamwork and financial contributions

are fuelling the revitalisation of Bermondsey’s local economy.

Since its establishment, it’s raised £2.3m in external investment, transformed the historic market on Southwark Park Road, and adorned Bermondsey’s streets with trees, monuments and murals.

Last month, roughly 400 local

businesses around the perimeter of the Blue were given the vote on whether to give the BID another fiveyear term.

This was the third vote since its inception and although there was less turnout than in 2018, BID Chair Jack Shah, said a bigger majority were in favour this time - 81 per cent.

"It's the best outcome for both the businesses and the community," he said. "Without the BID, there's no voice for businesses.

"We act as a buffer between them and the council - but we also work to make the area more pleasant, whilst making sure different needs of the community are met aswell."

Russell Dryden, BID manager, is also pleased with the result, commenting: "I think it's really good for the area - for people to know the businesses here care about their community."

A business' contributions, which can be as low as £93.75 per year, depend on their premises’ rateable value.

Those with a rateable value of £7,500 or more were eligible to vote in the ballot.

Having now secured a 'Yes' majority, the new term will run from April 1, 2024, until March 31, 2029.

Mr Shah added that he was looking forward to the future of the BID. "The pandemic really set us back, we essentially lost two and a half years - we had plans for the Blue - so now we will get back on track with those plans."

This will include creating a cutthrough from the Blue to the Biscuit Factory - in light of the 1,500-home development being built there currently.

Police confirm that councillor's claim there will be '150 PSCOs by 2025', is wrong, and number will be half that

By Isabel Ramirez The council has backtracked after its top community officer said there would be 150 police community support officers (PCSOs) in Southwark by 2025.

At the most recent council assembly (November 22), Cabinet Member for Community Safety Cllr Evelyn Akoto announced the figure after she was asked about the local plan for neighbourhood policing.

She said: "Currently, we have 25 PCSOs locally and by 2024/25, this figure is set to increase to 150."

However, the police have now shown that the number will be less than half of that.

A Met police spokesperson said: "We do currently have 25 PCSOs, but it will ultimately rise towards 69 PCSOs." After we investigated the claim, Cllr Akoto admitted she had received inaccurate information and therefore

said the wrong figure by mistake.

The Met's 'A New Met for London' three-year plan states that by next year there will be 500 more PSCOs in London as a whole, with a further 1,100 PSCOs by mid-2025 dependent on funding.

If this figure is reached, this means 1,600 PSCOs will be spread over 32 boroughs - with the level of police coverage decided based on the area's crime level.

Going by the Met's plan, this still means PSCOs will rise from one (in some places two) to three per ward. Whilst this is still significant, the number may not be as great as expected.

The issue of community policing is ever-present in Southwark, with concerns over how to tackle the robberies and anti-social behaviour that are sweeping across the borough.

Recently a group of Dulwich parents even started street patrols to increase adult presence in the hours after school when they said children were getting mugged 'almost daily.'

An Aylesbury Estate tenant's case against Southwark Council and Notting Hill Genesis will be heard in the High Court this week.

Aysen Dennis, 65, whose flat of 21 years is about to be bulldozed as part of the regeneration, has been in a legal battle with the council and the developer since May this year.

The estate is being demolished in phases.

Phase 2B, where Aysen lived, is particularly controversial because it involves slashing the number of social rent homes by almost 50 per cent.

In May, she told us that she believed this was an attempt at "social cleansing."

She is claiming that the council acted unlawfully by allowing the developer to make a change which would make it easier for them to sign off on ideas that vary from the original plan.

On Tuesday 28 November, the case which could stop Southwark Council's plans to demolish her block and build a 25-storey private tower on the site - was heard before Mr Justice Holgate in the Royal Courts of Justice.

In 2015, outline planning permission was granted to redevelop the Aylesbury Estate. This establishes the main principles of a development project but allows the developer to hammer out the finer details in subsequent planning applications.

Later, in July 2022, Notting Hill Genesis inserted the word ‘severable’ into the outline planning permission.

According to Aysen’s lawyers, at the Public Interest Law Centre, the insertion of ‘severable’ would allow the developer to build “something different from the approved scheme”.

However, when Notting Hill inserted this change, it did so as a non-material amendment. Non-material amendments are very minor changes and don’t require approval from elected councillors.

Aysen claims that the amendment was not minor, so should have been a material amendment.

“Southwark Council turned a blind eye to the amendment but, thankfully, we were watching,” Aysen said. She says the council should now submit an entirely new outline planning application.

Aysen was originally refusing to leave her flat but reluctantly agreed to move earlier this month, into one of the estate’s newly built, council-owned flats.

The 65-year-old claimed the council bought her flat for £690,000 - which she believed was an attempt to shut her up amid the legal challenge.

Despite having moved, she is still technically a tenant of the estate, so Aysen is continuing with her fight.

In May, Notting Hill Genesis and Southwark Council were approached for comment on the matter of the case being taken to the High Court.

Although the council did not respond, the developer said: “We have been made aware today that proceedings have been issued in relation to Southwark’s recent approval of a Non-Material Amendment to the Aylesbury Outline Planning Permission. We are currently considering the documents that have been lodged with the High Court.”

It is not currently known how long the case will run.

By Harrison Galliven Local Democracy Reporter Carshalton residents are fuming with Sutton Council claiming they installed a long awaited ‘animal crossing’ sign to keep ducks and swans safe in the wrong place.

While the council did listen to residents and erect the signs, they have complained the current signs will not serve their purpose as one is not in a suitable location.

In recent years the Carshalton Ponds conservation area has become a roadkill hotspot for the many birds that inhabit the area. The reason for this grisly phenomenon is the busy A232 going from Sutton to Croydon, which leads thousands of commuters alongside the pond daily.

The thought behind the signs is that they will alert drivers to the nearby wildlife and encourage them to slow their speed on the 30mph road.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), local activist Saffron Gloyne said: “For almost twoand-a-half years now there have been a small group of locals that have been campaigning furiously. There’s such a huge amount of animals that live at those ponds.

"Over the years we have lost swans, signets, Canada goose, moor hens and chicks of all species to car collisions. This has been quite disturbing, especially when the big birds are involved. Finally, after two years spent campaigning, the council finally agreed and put the signs up.”

Saffron, who visits the ponds regularly, told the LDRS of residents’ disappointment when they discovered

one of the signs they had been campaigning for was placed incorrectly.

She said: “Two are in the right place, one is in the wrong place. It’s on the wrong side of the road and it’s attached to a lamppost. There’s also no writing on it which he did promise, there’s just [a picture of] ducks."

The group told the LDRS that, while they welcome action from the council, the signs will not adequately warn motorists of their danger to nearby ducks and swans.

Gloyne said: “Either they have spent a little money and don’t feel like spending more, or there has been a mistake. I don’t think they are going to fix it, it took two-and-a-half years to get to this stage.

What is the use of spending a little bit of money if it’s not going to be effective?

“As a community, we don’t think this is a big ask. It’s not a lot of money, especially when they recently spent around £750,000 to dredge the pond to make it safer for the wildlife.

"It’s not a huge deal but they’ve pushed back so much and the fact that they have taken so long to do this is hugely disappointing. It’s another example of the council constantly ignoring local people.”

The Carshalton ponds conservation area is home to more than just bird life. It also hosts the local Honeywood museum and war memorial, which attracts visitors weekly. The Wandle river trail, which flows into the ponds, is also nearby.

Saffron told the LDRS: “People are very passionate about this area.”

According to the campaign group, the council is currently coordinating with their contractor regarding a way to resolve the issue and update the signs.

However, the group believes this has all come too late.

Saffron said: “We shouldn’t have had to ask for this but we did and they still screwed it up. It’s already horribly congested and a scary place to drive

through, when you add to that a big bird being hit you’re going to cause a lot of congestion. It’s very frequent.

“I understand it’s not too high up on their agenda but this is really important to the local area, people care about this.

Where everything in the country seems so out of our control right now, these little things matter even more to people.

"This is our corner of the world and if we can control it ourselves we can at least have a little bit we can protect.”

When approached for comment, a representative from Sutton council said: “Sutton Council installed some wildlife signs in the Carshalton Ponds area in consultation with the local community.

The signs are warning signs that meet highway design standards and do not require additional information.

"Earlier this month, we were asked to review the location of one of the signs and we will be visiting the site this week to review this and make any necessary adjustments.”’s Catholic Junior School.

Wimbledon tennis club expansion plans are rejected by Wandsworth

By Charlotte Lillywhite Local Democracy Reporterr A South London council has refused plans to build a new 8,000-seat stadium and 38 more tennis courts on the former site of Wimbledon Park Golf Club.

All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) wants to expand the grounds of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships to around 46 hectares under the proposals.

But Wandsworth Council’s planning committee voted 7-0 to reject the scheme on November 21.

Councillors agreed with Wandsworth’s planning officers’ recommendation that it should be rejected as it would cause “substantial harm to the openness of Metropolitan Open Land”.

The application will now be referred to Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who may call it in to make a final decision. It could also be referred to Michael Gove, the secretary of state for levelling up, homes and communities.

At Wandsworth’s meeting,

Conservative councillor Kim Caddy said: “The loss of green space and the harm caused to Metropolitan Open Land are not outweighed by the potential benefits of the scheme.

"There are no special circumstances here which justify a huge 8,000-seat stadium in a Green Belt area.”

Councillor Caddy also raised concerns about the impact of construction on local air quality and road safety.

She said: “There are many schools and nurseries along the route proposed and the additional lorry and other traffic movements will just worsen the already poor air quality in Southfields as well as increasing road safety risk.”

Conservative councillor Daniel Ghossain described the scale of the proposed development as “disproportionate and insensitive to the needs of residents and the environment”.

Developer Apache Capital is consulting with local residents and businesses on revised proposals for the site in Kingston town centre, ahead of submitting a fresh planning application to Kingston Council.

Apache Capital is holding public consultation events on November 30 and December 2 to update locals on the redevelopment of the site, which

Iain Simpson, chair of Save Wimbledon Park (SWP), welcomed Wandsworth’s decision on the plans. He said: “The councillors unanimously recognised the crucial point that this application provides no justification for so much harm to Metropolitan Open Land, our precious Green Belt.

“We have nothing against the tennis.

However, protecting the environment, a desire shared by the Greater London Authority (GLA) and all Londoners and indeed the whole country, and keeping open space truly public for the recreation and well being of real local communities is much more important.

includes 12-52 Kingsgate Road, Canbury Place car park and some of Walter Street.

Previous plans for the site, which is next to Kingston station, were first submitted in 2019. They were later revised in 2020, which included a reduction in the number of proposed homes from 445 to 389.

The number of proposed homes has been cut to around 265 under the latest proposals, while the height of the tallest building has been reduced from 19 to 15 storeys. The overall development has also been broken into smaller blocks of different heights.

Labour councillor Jamie Colclough said he felt there were some benefits to the scheme, but added: “When it’s still weighed up against the damage it’s going to be doing to Metropolitan Open Land, I still don’t think it’s enough – it’s not life-changing.”

It comes after neighbouring Merton Council voted to approve the scheme in October. The site is designated as Metropolitan Open Land and most of it lies in the Merton borough, with some parts in Wandsworth.

Along with building an 8,000-seat show court, 38 grass courts and 10 maintenance hubs on the site, the plans include a new public park spanning 9.4 hectares.

The extra courts would allow AELTC to move the qualifying competition for the championships, currently held in Roehampton, to the expanded site. It would also host a new 14-and-under tournament and double the size of the

Other changes to the plans include an increase in the proportion of three-bed homes from 10per cent to 15pc, keeping three trees near the junction of Sopwith Way and Seven Kings Way and removing 13-43 Richmond Road from the application.

Other key aspects of the scheme remain the same, including the closure of the car park.

The Fatal vespers at blackfriars 93 Catholic worshippers plunged to their deaths, with many more seriously injured

By Herbie Russell Four hundred years ago, seeking refuge from prying Protestant eyes, 300 Catholics crammed into a Blackfriars residence to hear Mass. For many, it would be their final prayer.

The Fatal Vespers of 1623 was one of the most tragic disasters in London’s history, killing 95 and leaving many more seriously injured.

But despite the huge loss of innocent life, some religiously fervent Londoners turned on the victims, deeming it God’s will that the papists had died.

The Fatal Vespers wasn’t as gruesome as The Great Plague of London, nor was its legacy as monumental as The Great Fire of London.

But as an insight into the zealotry and religious fervour that gripped London under King James I, it’s invaluable.

The Historical Backdrop

When King James I ascended to the

English throne in 1603, he reassured his contemporaries he would not persecute Catholics who practised their religion discreetly.

However, the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, itself partly a symptom of opposition to the Protestant king, changed everything.

James I introduced new penalties against Catholics and a new Oath of Allegiance that demanded worshipers deny the Pope’s authority over the English king.

Against this backdrop of religious persecution, London’s significant Catholic population were forced to worship behind closed doors.

The Disaster

So on Sunday, October 26, or November 5 for those adhering to the Catholic church’s ‘New Calendar’, roughly 300 people gathered at Hunsdon House in Blackfriars.

Away from the prying eyes of the English authorities, it was regularly used as a place of Catholic worship.

That evening Robert Drury, a noted and distinguished preacher, was leading the service.

Eager to hear his sermon, hundreds huddled into a third-floor room in Hunsdon House.

But the timber building apparently wasn’t designed to withhold such a

weight and the floor’s main beam snapped.

A wave of people crashed through to the floor below where its beams snapped again. While some people escaped the fall, fortunately standing on a section of floor that remained firm, many fell two entire storeys – roughly 22 feet.

95 people including the two Jesuit preachers were killed, while many others sustained serious injuries.

The Aftermath

Today, one might expect such a serious disaster to be met with an outpouring of sympathy.

But with the religious atmosphere so tense, and suspicion of Catholics rampant, many interpreted the incident as divine intervention.

One contemporary vicar, in a venomous attack on popery, declared that those who died had been a “multitude of blind ignorant people” whose “detestable idolatrie” had offended God. As late as 1657, Puritan minister Samuel Clarke, produced an explicitly providentialist account of the incident.

The Fatal Vespers, also known as the Doleful Evensong, remains the greatest peacetime tragedy in central London since the Medieval era.

Historians have yet to pin down exactly where Hunsdon House was. It’s rumoured that the dead, prohibited from consecrated burial, were thrown into pits on the site.

If Ana-Maria Bamberger’s aim for One Whole Night is to stoke the fears and anxieties of female audience members over the age of 25 then, speaking as one of them, I can say she has succeeded. If it weren’t for the brilliant humour and wonderful chemistry between the show’s two stars, I might’ve left feeling quite depressed, writes Caitlin Odell.

Hilarious, uncomfortable and in moments barely watchable, One Whole Night tells the story of a seemingly serendipitous meeting between actress Marisa and a benevolent doctor. We meet Marisa at an all-time low, having been cast aside by a long-term boyfriend for a younger counterpart. Through a manic opening monologue, we’re given a window into her personality, quickly learning that she is neurotic, childish and very funny, among other traits.

Marisa and Victor’s rapport is compelling to watch and, as for the audience, it's all we can do not to immediately pin our hopes on a happily ever after, having watched Marisa in the depths of despair just moments before.

But what I admired about this story was Bamberger’s refusal to pigeonhole the play with an all-defining plot line or

a dramatic twist, which at times felt as though it might be brewing. For me, this play was not about the plot at all, but instead about the people in it.

In a time where the pervading discourse concerning middle-aged white men is unfavourable, it was refreshing to see a more nuanced depiction of the male psyche. Whilst Victor is certainly not without his flaws, he too appears vulnerable, sensitive and caring. But Bamberger does well to remind us that as a relationship between any two people builds, there is inevitably much more at play than pure attraction.

Through Victor and Marisa’s brief entanglement, the author neatly captures the push and pull that occurs between two people who are exploring a connection sparked by desire but motivated by ego and want for validation. Even in Victor’s attempt to resolve the mess courteously, the minuscule breadcrumbs of hope he leaves behind for Marisa reveal his unwillingness to sever the tie completely. It is this that steers the play away from following a one-dimensional narrative about a lonely middle-aged woman’s yearning for love.

relationship domain, regardless of gender, profession, social status or age, all adults are governed by the wants and needs of their inner children. And whilst this might sound like old news, the way

Bamberger effortlessly embedded this within the arguably pessimistic narrative, left me feeling thoughtful, amused and weirdly, not depressed in the slightest.

You cannot leave and not feel Christmassy

I was in dancing distance of Mrs Fezziwig; I could have tugged at the hanging threads of Scrooge’s raggedy clothes, I ate satsumas and mince pies with the Cratchits! Oh, what Christmassy joy, and it’s not even December yet.

The ensemble set up the wickedness of Ebenezer Scrooge, letting us observe as he sees off the carol singers trying to raise funds for the needy, then refusing his nephew’s invite to Christmas dinner, and while he gives his loyal employer, Bob Cratchit, a hard time on Christmas Eve. The ghost of Marley, his deceased business partner, appears, weighed down by the sins of his greed, and tells Scrooge that it is time for him to repent for his money-lending money grabbing ways otherwise he will suffer torment in the afterlife.

Scrooge ignores Marley’s warning, thinking it a nightmare created by an undigested piece of beef, until the Ghost of Christmas Past appears to take him back to his childhood when he would have been happier if his father was better with the

family money instead of being a reckless chance-taker. The beatings the young Ebenezer took made him the parsimonious adult he became, always fearful of falling into debt.

He also sees his first love, Belle, who he leaves behind to wait for him as he goes off to seek his fortune as

a financier, and we are witness to his father selling the gifts he had bought for his sister. We slowly get an understanding of how a nice young man could turn out so untrusting and cruel.

The Ghost of Christmas Present opens Scrooge’s eyes to the poverty

that surrounds him now, deprivation that he has ignored and belittled; but it is the Ghost of Christmas Future that finally makes him see how his miserly manner has affected so many people around him.

Jack Thorne’s adaptation shortens and simplifies Dickens’ classic

work but without losing any of the sentiment or story that it told almost 200 years ago - a tale that is still very much relevant today.

Christopher Eccleston bounces about on the waves created by a marvellous cast who dance, sing and bell-ring their way through Scrooge’s life. They enter and exit through four doors while the audience all around become part of that life.

This is a heartwarming production that makes you want Scrooge to find his redemption, and with Eccleston evolving from grumpy old codger to wide-eyed man full of wonder, you know he will spend the rest of his days making up for past deeds. You cannot leave the Old Vic and not feel Christmassy.

With A Christmas Carol in an area that has several connections to Dickens and his books, we all left putting our hands in our pockets for a charity chosen by the theatre, either throwing money into a bucket or tapping card readers. That is the Scrooge Effect.

Arts Notebook open, with pen in hand, young reviewer Frida suddenly freezes as Roald Dahl’s Witches sweep onstage, strikingly illuminated by lighting director Bruno Poet. Dave Malloy’s score builds to a dark crescendo only to shift gear abruptly to reveal the apparently everyday guises of these spooktacular sorceresses.

Young reviewer Woody, peeps over a programme beneath a beanie brought to cover his eyes in case of emergencies, and lowers it a fraction at the jauntily upbeat mood change. A notebook is flung into my lap,’I don’t want to write a review, I just want to watch!’ hisses Frida.

The Witches are among us, write Ed, Frida and Woody Gray.

Woody puts down the programme, his small hand relaxes in mine and we begin our journey to the Hotel Magnificent in Bournemouth, and what a truly magnificent evening we are embarking upon together.

Dahl’s dark fantasy, written in 1983, has come under fire in recent years with criticisms of misogyny. Publisher Puffin responded with rewrites to ‘ensure that it can continue to be enjoyed by all today’, leading to cries of censorship from Margaret Atwood and our own Prime Minister. Dahl would no doubt have put a hex on his censors.

Nevertheless, a story that demonises women needs addressing and playwright

Lucy Kirkwood and director Lyndsey Turner, along with composer Malloy, have created a rollicking rollercoaster of a musical that delights and entertains with wit and sophistication alongside knowing nods and winks to tropes and misogynistic stereotypes. Feisty cigarsmoking Norwegian Gran, played with gusto and warmth by Sally Ann Triplett, begins with a brief explanation of witchery in days gone by as a puritan mob lead away a woman who calls out, ’I’m not a witch, I just like being single!’ Gran is later hounded by a similar mob in the hotel who suspect her of being a witch until she manages a crafty evasion. Triplett is the true feminist role model within the musical, a misfit, refusing the conformity of traditional family life, or the coven, vulnerable yet tough-talking, delivering sharp one-liners whilst tenderly creating her own family of abandoned children.

It was apparent from the laughterfilled theatre that the audience were totally under the spell of all this malevolent magnificence. Our young reviewers even re-enacted their favourite moments in the interval.

On the night we went, Bertie Caplan was brilliant as plucky orphan Luke, conspiring to aid Gran in her mission to destroy the witches. Cian Eagle-Service sent howls of laughter through the aisles as Bruno, a sickly sweet charmer in pursuit of the ultimate sugar rush, whose life had been mapped out by his doting. status-fixated parents, only

Wowed by Witches

for their best laid plans to be curtailed by the witches’ delayed-action mouseshrinker. The child actors’ voices and delivery were sensational. Hotel manager Mr Stringer, channelling Fawlty with a double mouse trouble, made full use of Lizzie Clachlan’s innovative set to hilarious effect.

Katherine Kingsley’s sultry narcissistic Grand High Witch hit all the right notes during the brilliant anti-child proclamation, ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’,

Light and Hope Snuffed Out

In a different age, where these issues are less shocking to audiences and critics alike, there is more opportunity to get beyond the sexual scandal to consider what was truly subversive in this play: its criticism of bourgeois manners and cover ups, hypocritical religion and the oppression of the patriarchy.

The action all takes place in the Alving family home following the death of the ‘man of the house’, Captain Alving. This bereavement offers a brief glimmer of hope and an opportunity for a new start to his widow, which is completely snuffed out by the end of the tragedy.

This small and candlelit theatre lends itself naturally to the claustrophobia of this family, which is so turned in on itself.

Sarah Slimani as Regine, the family maid, opens the action by slowly lighting the candelabras whilst fending off the rather slimy character of her adoptive father, who has plans to pimp her out in his so called ‘home’ for sailor’s rest home. Despite having less obvious agency than almost any other character, Regine remains the bringer of what feeble light there is to both stage and production. Her self-possessed presence as the maid-

copy of Dahl’s novel.

One of the greatest pieces of 20th century satire, Joan Littlewood’s Oh! What a Lovely War, turned 60 this year. Blackeyed Theatre In association with South Hill Park return to a show they had previously produced in 2011 with a fresh production to undertake a UK tour, writes Christopher Peacock.

from each battle firmly drive home the senselessness of war.

This production stays true to the original material and Victoria Spearing’s set design places the action and cast under a shabby circus tent which looks on the verge of falling apart. The whole cast are trained actor-musicians and handle all of the music with aplomb. They take every opportunity to ham up the comedy and keep the farce nicely paced. Nicky Allpress’ direction is neat and efficient, especially with scene transitions and the slightly larger scale set pieces and musical numbers.

Oh! What a Lovely War is timeless as a piece, being so steeped in historical detail, and Blackeyed Theatre’s production certainly serves the play well. This musical farce retains plenty of laughs while always perforated with the statistics that expose the horrors of war without having to graphically show us.

Ghosts, which opened this week at the Sam Wanamaker Theatre, is dark in every sense of the word.

When Ibsen wrote the play it was considered too scandalous for anything but private clubs. Its themes of incest and venereal disease made it ‘production non grata’, writes Katie Kelly.

while sitting alone in her hotel room, summoning the spirit of Greta Garbo.

This deliciously seductive concoction of Kirkwood’s witty lyrics and Kingsley’s deadpan Nordic delivery hinted at the paradoxes at Dahl’s heart of darkness - Be wary, adults can be scary and there is no magic fairy.

‘Wow wow wow wow, generally Wow! And another wow for good luck!’ was Woody’s verdict at the end of the evening.

Frida went straight home and dug out her

turned-heiress, is powerful from beginning to end.

The central performance of Hattie Morahan as Helene Alving is initially buoyant, witty and fizzing with energy. As the story ploughs on and more secrets are unveiled. Her precious son cannot be rescued from the fate visited on him by his father’s disease and the only choice that remains is whether to hasten his end and honour his desperate request for release from humiliating suffering.

Eventually, the ghosts of the past overwhelm her in their shadows and rob her of all hope.

This production has done a good job of immersing us in personal tragedy at the expense of exploring the political implications. The sordid,

purple, shag pile carpet which covers the stage almost physically absorbs the protagonists and eventually the ideas. The sound is clever and sparse though a misjudged gong provoked rather strange laughter at a point of maximum tragedy. The mirrored backdrop deftly reflects the characters back to us and themselves and accidentally symbolises a slight tendency to self-absorption in the admittedly clever direction of Joe HillGibbons.

Littlewood’s partner Gerry Raffles was the one who first pitched the idea of producing a show that tells the story of the First World War after hearing Charles Chilton’s radio play The Long Long Trial.

With her company the Theatre Workshop they set about creating a musical that not only tells the factual story of the war but highlights the futility of that war and by extension, war itself.

Thames Water Utilities Limited (hereinafter called the “Thames Water”) may acquire any of the land described in the Schedule below by making a general vesting declaration pursuant to Article Articles 28, 29 and 34 of the Order and under section 4 of the Compulsory Purchase (Vesting Declarations) Act 1981. This has the effect, subject to paragraph 4 below, of vesting the land in Thames Water’s ownership at the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 below. A declaration may not be made before the end of a period of two months from the first publication of a notice which includes this statement except with the consent in writing of every occupier of the land affected.

Notices concerning general vesting declaration 2.

As soon as may be after Thames Water make a general vesting declaration, they must serve notice of it on every occupier of any of the land specified in the declaration (except land where there is one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) and on every person who gives them information relating to the land in pursuance of the invitation contained in any notice. When the service of notices of the general vesting declaration is completed, a further period begins to run. This period, which must not be less than 28 days, will be specified in the declaration. On the first day after the end of this period (“the vesting date”) the land described in the declaration will, subject to what is said in paragraph 4, vest in Thames Water, together with the right to enter on the land and take possession of it.

Every person on whom Thames Water could have served a notice to treat in respect of his interest in the land (other than a tenant under one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) will be entitled to claim compensation for the acquisition of his interest in the land, with interest on the compensation from the vesting date.

Modifications with respect to certain tenancies 3.

In the case of certain tenancies, the position stated above is subject to modifications. The modifications apply where the tenancy is either a “minor tenancy”, i.e. a tenancy for a year or a yearly tenancy or a lesser interest, or “a long tenancy which is about to expire”. The latter expression means a tenancy granted for an interest greater than a minor tenancy but having on the vesting date a period still to run which is not more than the period specified in the declaration for this purpose (which must not be more than a year). In calculating how long a tenancy has still to run, where an option to renew or to terminate it is available to either party, it shall be assumed that the landlord will take every opportunity open to him to terminate the tenancy while the tenant will use every opportunity to retain or renew his interest.

The modifications are that Thames Water may not exercise the right of entry referred to in paragraph 2 in respect of land subject to a tenancy described in paragraph 3 unless they first serve a notice to treat in respect of the tenancy and then serve every occupier of the land with a notice of their intention to enter and take possession after the period (not less than 14 days from the service of the notice) specified in the notice. The right of entry will be exercisable at the end of that period. The vesting of the land will be subject to the tenancy until the end of that period or until the tenancy comes to an end, whichever happens first.

dulwich hamleT were left heartbroken after they conceded in stoppage-time in their 2-1 defeat to Billericay Town in the second round of the women's Fa cup last weekend.

Brittany Saylor gave fifth-tier Dulwich a 35th-minute lead from the penalty spot against third-tier National League South side Billericay as a cup upset looked on.

Saylor and Pheobe Read went close to adding a second for Ryan Dempsey’s side just before half-time.

The hosts levelled five minutes into the second half through Soraya Walsh and Maddie Biggs scored the winner after the game had moved into five minutes of added-time.

Dulwich are back in L&SERWFL Premier Division action on Sunday when they play Sutton United at Carshalton Athletic FC at 3pm.

Luke Wanadio gave Dulwich the lead with a penalty in the 52nd minute before Gary Lockyer equalised eleven minutes from time.

“Earlier on it was to and fro. I thought we were in control in the first half and I thought we were in control in the second half,” Hayrettin said.

“Our quality was good but we just couldn’t get our second goal. They blocked it on the

line, the keeper made a great save, we hit the underside of the crossbar.

“We were dominant and it was good to see the team play like a functional team, like my teams play.

“We didn’t lose, which was important, we were good value and I think on another day with a bit of luck with the way we played, we should have won.

“Seven games unbeaten in the league, we’re on a little bit of a run. These guys who manage this team are personal friends of mine, good guys, proper football people, but I think we were better than them on the day. The Magpies scored twice in 60 seconds just after the hour-mark through Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton before Reece James was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 73rd minute.

Anthony Gordon added the fourth for Eddie Howe’s side seven minutes from time with Pochettino watching from the Stamford Bridge stands as he was serving a touchline ban.

The Blues are tenth in the Premier League table with sixteen points from thirteen games.

“It wasn’t our best game, in fact I’d say that was probably our worst performance of the season,” Pochettino said. “It was really tough to be in the stands and not be able to influence things.

Pochettino added: “Recently we have been talking a lot about the need to become more consistent. We came into this game after the international break having played two good games against Tottenham and Manchester City and we spoke in the week about ensuring we maintain these levels.

“We are a young side with lots of areas to improve but the first thing to get right is the intensity levels. We are very sorry to everyone for this performance but now it is up to us to take the responsibility and make things right in the next game.

“We spoke in the dressing room after the game to reflect and we need to sleep on this one and get back to work as soon as possible.

By John Kelly CRYSTAL PALACE manager Roy Hodgson felt his side didn’t get what they deserved in their 2-1 defeat to Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on a damaging afternoon last weekend when the visitors also lost Ebere Eze and Cheick Doucouré to injuries.

Hatters goalkeeper Thomas Kasinski produced a double-save to deny Eze and Jeffrey Schlupp in the first half.

Teden Mengi put the hosts in front in the 72nd minute before Michael Olise equalised two minutes later.

have liked, who can say they were pleased with their day’s work, because with the players that we had on the field, I thought we should have been at least capable of coming away with at least one point. But unfortunately we threw that away after the equaliser. We allowed them back in for the winning goal.”

There were further blows for Palace as Eze and Doucouré went off injured early in the second half.

Hodgson added: “They’re two of our more important players, of course, and it’s a devastating piece of news for us in a way, because Cheick’s injury is very serious.

“We don’t know quite how serious Eze’s is at this moment in time, but we were particularly frustrated because it was so unnecessary. Basically, what seemed to me, and maybe a lot of people watching the game, to be such an obvious free-kick, and then the player to land on him and restrain him like he did.

“For that just to be waved aside, not only did we not get the free-kick in a dangerous position, we also lost one of our most important players. That makes it an exceptionally bitter day for me.”

Their easygoing combination has even enabled De Norre to spend more time higher up the pitch with the midfielder revealing new head coach Joe Edwards has encouraged him to venture forward.

The 26-year-old said: "When I scored in Belgium, I infiltrated into the [final third] and now with the new manager, I can go there a little bit more.

"He told me also you can push up and not stay back every time. So I have a good connection with Savs as he goes [forward] maybe six out of ten times and I go three or four times. So hopefully

De Norre is a fan of his new boss' ideas when it comes to playing style with Edwards keen to gradually introduce a brand of football more reliant on short passing and possession.

But I'm a guy who needs to touch the ball a lot to get into the game and you can see on the pitch that we wanted to play a little bit more and be more close connected so for me personally it's really good. I like to have the ball, play short passes and go forward so I'm enjoying it.

We switched off from the set-piece situation and found ourselves chasing the game. It’s cost us and it’s a hard one to take. There were a few mistakes leading to that goal. We needed to be vigilant and more alert to the danger.

"Just as we were turning the screw the lights went out, it was very frustrating.

It gave Gillingham a chance to go in and regroup and stunted our momentum a little bit. But after we came back out we got on top again and it looked like we were going to get a winner.

"The few things that could go wrong went wrong in the end."
