According to Labour’s analysis, Kensington Aldridge Academy on Silchester Road will lose £82,243, equivalent to £80 per student. That is followed closely by the Chelsea Academy, who will have a £71,085 shortfall, or £79 less per student. Both are secondary schools.

Joe Powell, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Kensington and Bayswater, said it was “utterly unacceptable” that schools face less funding over what he called was the “Tories’ botched schools budget”.

Labour has slammed the government’s 'bungled schools budget' claiming it leaves those in one West London borough almost £500k worse off next year.

They say the latest government figures show schools in Kensington and Chelsea will be, on average, £14,800 short – or have £41 less to spend per pupil – next year, because the Department for Education miscalculated the amounts of funding state schools in England need.

Labour says secondary schools will hit hardest with the average deficit racking up to £45k, or a loss of £53 per pupil per year.

Nationally, they say, schools will lost £370m in funding for the 2024/25 academic year.

The Department for Education disputes this and says core funding hasn’t changed.

He said: “Too many children in this borough have been let down by 13 years of Conservative government. Labour will raise standards with more teachers and mental health support for all school pupils.

“My priority is to ensure every child in Kensington and Bayswater has the opportunity to receive the best start in life.”

Bridget Phillipson MP, Labour’s shadow education secretary, said: “Rishi Sunak wants young people to learn maths to 18, but he ought to get his own house in order first and teach Conservative education ministers how to count.

“Ministers’ staggering mathematical incompetence follows hot on the heels of disruption caused by the Conservatives which has pushed our schools to breaking

point.

“It’s no wonder that the relationship between families, schools and government is at rock bottom – education simply isn’t a priority for the Conservatives.”

She said Labour would invest in hiring 6,500 more teachers and put mental health counsellors in every secondary school paid for by ending private schools’ tax breaks.

They said the republished figures include an average 1.9per cent increase in funding per pupil compared to this year.

A Kensington and Chelsea Council spokesperson said they expect to see an increase of £656,000 (0.8per cent) in funding for schools next year as well as a separate grant that funds part of the Teachers’ pay award.

By Isabel Ramirez three YounG men have started a video podcast where they open up and discuss the everyday realities of growing up in southwark.

‘Full Circle’ is a series of vlogs, hosted by three young men as they tell their stories - predominantly through the lens of the Black community.

The hosts, who did not know each other before, explore topics such as life during lockdown, education and vulnerability.

Reuben Quaye, 31, from Camberwell, is one of the hosts and explained he was keen to show that being vulnerable is a strength.

"I am a black man living with Sickle Cell Disease. This has been an opportunity to present my experiences as a disabled black man who has struggled with concepts like vulnerability," he explained.

Reuben added that vulnerability is not a common practice for men and he hopes to see that change.

Another host is Kelvin Miles, also 31, from Elephant and Castle, who said he wanted to 'rediscover' who he was.

"I wanted to use this opportunity to heal, grow and learn about other people's journeys to help provide a unique perspective on my experiences growing up."

On the experience, he said: "I've learned to really channel the emotions and thoughts I could not articulate when I was younger."

The youngest of the hosts is Luca Wood, 20, from East Dulwich, who said he got involved after Cllr Portia Mwangangye - who led the project knocked on his door.

Cllr Portia Mwangangye, the council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Young People explained her idea behind the

project: "Young people are at the sharp edge of many societal problems, so supporting their mental health has to be a priority.

“Through telling the stories that made them who they are, they prove that vulnerability is not weakness, but a sign of strength. We hope these episodes will be used by anyone wanting to open up

spaces for other young people to tell their stories and begin healing.”

Eight episodes are now available on Southwark Space, a new video platform launched by Southwark Council on YouTube to help young people speak to their peers and a wider audience.

Special guests include local community leaders, such as John James

OBE from the Sickle Cell Society and therapeutic coach Alex Holmes.

The council worked with the young people and producers Anubis Pictures to develop and film the vlogcast at The Trunk, a hireable community venue at Elephant and Castle.

By Herbie Russell Dozens of parents gathered outside Comber Grove Primary school to protest against its potential closure last week.

The Camberwell school, where pupil numbers have fallen by almost 40 per cent since 2019, will close in August if Southwark Council approves the plans.

Parents, whose children are still reeling from the disruption of the pandemic, fear the impact closure will have on their children’s education.

The proposal to close Good-rated Comber Grove comes after a flurry of primary school closures and amalgamations over the last year.

This is because schools receive funding on a per-pupil basis. So with declining birth rates and other demographic changes decimating pupil rolls, Southwark schools’ finances have been hit hard.

Mum-of-two Fatima Atac, 30, attended a meeting about the possible closure at Comber Grove on Thursday, November 16. “[The pandemic] was a nightmare because [it’s as if] they’re still living in Year 1 and Reception because that’s what they were in Covid although they’re in Year Three and Four now,” she said.

“My son’s in Year Three and he’s only started reading this year and it is quite hurtful.”

Council officers have tried to reassure parents that there are enough pupil vacancies at nearby schools to accommodate displaced children.

At the meeting, an officer said there were 840 spaces at Southwark schools within a 0.7-mile radius.

But Fatima said she’d visited four local schools and that none had enough space to accommodate both her children.

“Some were overcrowded and some had limited spaces in the year group,” she said.

Ressi Mohammed, 35, has two children in years Six and Three. She also claimed she’d been turned away from local schools.

She also said the nearest school, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, couldn’t accommodate her Muslim family’s needs.

“I’m worried because there are no schools around us. The only school around is St Joseph’s,” she said.

Other nearby schools include Brunswick Park, John Ruskin, Lyndhurst and Crawford - but Ressi, who also has a pre-nursery-age child, said this was inconvenient.

“If you’re walking to Camberwell it’s a 10-15 minute walk. By bus, you have to take 2 stops,” she said.

But desks have continued emptying at an alarming rate, leaving it with 92 vacancies in 2022 - 2023.

Brexit and the pandemic have also been blamed for declining pupil numbers.

Both, the council has previously pointed out, have caused families to move away from the borough or the UK entirely.

The housing crisis has also been blamed, with some citing Southwark Council's own regeneration policy, which has included the demolition and regeneration of the Heygate and Aylesbury estates.

Last October Makeda WilliamsPinnock, headteacher at Elephant and Castle’s Victory Primary School, said regeneration had had a “huge impact” on pupil admissions.

In the last year, St Francesca Cabrini Primary School, Honor Oak and Townsend Primary School, Walworth, have both closed due to falling

admissions.

Meanwhile, Cobourg Primary School has amalgamated with Camelot Primary School and Harris Free has amalgamated with Harris Primary Academy, Peckham both this year.

Cllr Ali has previously urged the government to change the per-pupil funding formula and provide additional funds to help schools cope with falling admissions.

The first incident took place at around 10.50pm on Tuesday, October 10, on Barrington Road, Brixton.

A woman was entering her address when a man approached her. Police said: “After a short struggle she was able to fight him off and he left the area.”

On Friday, November 17, a woman was walking along Sisters Avenue, by Clapham Common, when she noticed a man following her.

Police said: “As he got close, she

began to shout and he ran away.”

The third incident took place on Sumburgh Road, Clapham, at around 1.40am on Sunday, November 19.

The man approached the woman and grabbed her but she managed to escape.

Officers believe the incidents are linked. The suspect is described as white, between 25 and 30 years old, of slim build, with short blonde hair.

Chief Inspector Dave Lee, from South West Borough Command Unit, said: “These were extremely

frightening incidents for the women involved and we are using all of the resources at our disposal to identify the individual responsible.

“We know this will cause community concern and we will be carrying out extra patrols at key times. We would encourage anyone who believes they can help our investigation to contact us as soon as possible.”

Police have launched an appeal after three different women were followed by an assailant in Brixton and Clapham.

One woman only escaped after “a short struggle” while another was “grabbed” before she was able to get away.

stuDents at an elephant & Castle school got a visit from a woman who was an astronaut for nasa to 'empower girls' to get into science.

Ark Globe Academy welcomed Dr Peggy Whitson earlier this month to share firsthand experience of space exploration with a class of thirty students.

Dr Whitson, who holds the record for the most time spent in space by an American, spoke about life working on the International Space Station and the challenges she faced during her missions.

She welcomed questions from our budding astronauts and said: “If you want to be an astronaut you can go into any of the STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths] fields and you would be successful.

"Personal characteristics to be an astronaut that I think are important are adaptability, teamwork - being able to work well with others, and just being motivated and a positive person.”

Dr Whitson, was also the first female, nonmilitary Chief of the Astronaut Office, was joined at the school by Doug Emhoff, The Second Gentlemen of The United States (as his wife is Vice-President Kamala Harris) and Paul Bate, CEO of the UK Space Agency.

The purpose of the visit was to inspire and empower girls to pursue STEM subjects and promote interest in space exploration and science.

Mr Emhoff spoke to the students about the importance of education and pursuing their passions. He emphasised the need for more diversity in science

Plans for Twickenham Riverside, with new homes, shops and a pub

Twickenham Riverside Trust was given a 125-year lease on Diamond Jubilee Gardens in 2014 and opposed Richmond Council’s application to acquire the land under a compulsory purchase order (CPO) at a public inquiry earlier this year, which was required for the scheme to go ahead.

The council’s plans for Twickenham Riverside involve moving the gardens to the centre of the site and building two new blocks on either side – with a fivestorey building on Wharf Lane and a four-storey block on Water Lane.

There would be 45 new homes across both buildings, including 21 affordable homes, along with new shops, offices, a café and a pub on the site.

Plans for the new open space include an event space, a children’s play area, pitches, terraced lawns and new trees.

The trust has objected to the scheme, with particular concerns the Wharf Lane building would be too tall. It said it wants the council to keep and expand the gardens at its existing location as part of any redevelopment project.

But the scheme won planning permission in November last year, and a public inquiry on the council’s proposed CPO of the gardens took place in June this year.

A total of 147 objections, and 66 letters of support, were submitted to the Planning Inspectorate regarding the CPO. Objectors raised concerns over the height, scale and design of the proposed buildings and whether the block on Wharf Lane was needed for the scheme, along with the extent and quality of the proposed open space.

But the council argued the scheme would improve the site and the new open space would be better than the existing space in terms of quantity and quality.

Richmond Council has been given powers to acquire gardens from a trust, as part of plans to transform a town centre with 45 new homes, shops, open space and a pub.

It said the Water Lane building would be of a similar height to nearby buildings on King Street, while the Wharf Lane block would serve as a destination point along the river. It added removing either building would have a negative impact on the viability of the scheme.

The council also said it had been negotiating with the trust since 2018, but that it resorted to applying for a CPO to deliver the scheme in a “timely way” as no legal agreement had been reached.

Planning inspector Peter Rose ruled the new open space “would be larger than the existing, better connected, more accessible, better disposed towards the river, and provide a comparable range of play/recreational opportunities”.

He also said the two proposed

buildings would “appear relatively unimposing and self-contained”.

Granting the CPO, Mr Rose said: “The scheme is likely to make Twickenham a far more attractive place to visit and enjoy and that, in turn, is also likely to add to the vitality and strength of the local economy.”

He added: “The quality of the scheme draws from its distinctive relationship to the river. It seeks to embrace and harness that relationship through creation of a far safer and far more attractive riverside environment, and one in which both open space and the wider public realm would be promoted to the fore.

“Open space and the exciting untapped environmental potential of the river would no longer be marginalised and

rendered subservient to vehicles and to vehicle parking.

"Additional to that would be the enhanced relationship the scheme would facilitate between the town centre and the riverside and, more generally, the considerable housing and economic and other benefits to be delivered.”

The council plans to use a stopping up order to limit car access along the embankment between Wharf Lane and Eel Pie Island Bridge for most of the day to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists as part of the redevelopment.

Wharf Lane and Water Lane would become two-way routes to maintain access for nearby residents and businesses, while the embankment could be used by lorries for loading for

businesses in the early morning.

The next step for the scheme is for the council to make the stopping up order.

Lib Dem council leader Gareth Roberts said: “It has taken a long time to get to this stage, but we are delighted with the Planning Inspectorate’s decision. This is a crucial step in delivering something that residents have been asking for four decades – a scheme that connects the riverside with the town and acts as a magnet for both residents and visitors.

“Currently the site is dominated by a car park that doesn’t allow people to make the most of the river or to enjoy the beautiful riverside views. I hope that those who opposed the scheme will put their objections to one side and join with us to deliver a regenerated heart for Twickenham.”

Work aimed at returning Richmond Station to its former 1930s glory An “iconic” train station in South West London is getting a £325,000 makeover aimed at helping to return it to its former 1930s glory.

The improvements at Richmond Station are expected to be finished by the end of this year, but it is hoped they will form part of a larger project to restore its original Art Deco features.

South Western Railway (SWR) is carrying out the works at the station, which include repairing and polishing its timber entrance doors, repairing its flagpoles, refurbishing its customer toilets and cleaning its Portland stone façade.

The works are being funded by SWR, Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust.

Lib Dem Richmond Council leader Gareth Roberts said the works will improve the station for commuters. He said: “Residents will be able to benefit from modernised toilets and repaired entrance doors whilst enjoying the restoration of some of the station’s historic Art Deco features.

"These works at Richmond station are one of the many ways our transport network is being improved to build a safer, more convenient borough for all residents.”

The station was designed in 1936 and last underwent major refurbishment in 1985. Its Art Deco style is thought to have been inspired by the work of architect Charles Holden, who designed many London Underground stations.

SWR is working with the Railway Heritage Trust and Benedict O’Looney Architects on designs that restore or replicate some of the station’s original features, which have been lost or covered up over time.

The station’s original plans are being considered along with promotional images from when it first opened to the public. These wider restoration works would be brought forward, on top of the current improvements, if extra funding is made available.

station’s doors are expected to be finished this month, along with the façade cleaning.

The revamp of its customer toilets is set to be completed by December.

David Wilby, regional development manager at SWR, said: “We’ve already made great progress on the timber entrance doors, including their Art Deco metal detailing, while the façade has also been cleaned in recent weeks.

"These are just the first of many original features we’re keen to see brought back to life. We appreciate

our customers’ patience while work is carried out and it’s our hope that we can find the funding we need for future phases.”

Tim Hedley-Jones, executive director of the Railway Heritage Trust, said the works will help restore the station to its “former 1930s glory”.

He added: “It has some beautiful features that have been lost or hidden over the years. We are very pleased that, once again, these will be enjoyed by rail passengers and the local community.”

By Herbie Russell southWarK CounCiL has kickstarted its campaign against graffiti with a "week-long blitz" along Peckham High Street - with more hotspots set to be targeted.

The council started work in Peckham on Monday, November 13, following its landmark policy announcement that it will start removing graffiti from private buildings free of charge.

Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, Clean Air and Streets, said: “Graffiti, not to be confused with public art, is a growing concern for residents and businesses across the borough.

“This is why we're taking decisive action F.A.A.

to eliminate these eyesores from our high streets by providing local businesses with a complimentary graffiti removal service.”

He added: “To get things started, our cleansing teams are out in Peckham this week clearing graffiti from storefronts and commercial buildings.”

Locals have recently complained that an “epidemic” of graffiti has made areas like Peckham feel “intimidating” and “run down”.

The problem has spiralled out of control in recent years - in part because private property owners either can’t afford, or aren’t willing, to pay for private graffiti removal services.

According to council data, graffiti levels have doubled since 2018, from a score of 4.96 to 10 per cent last year.

But from now on, Southwark Council will remove graffiti from privately owned buildings and infrastructure below two meters from ground level - without asking for payment.

Cllr McAsh said: “Given the ongoing cost of living emergency, we understand many businesses are struggling to keep afloat and struggle to cover clean-up costs themselves. We're here to help.”

As well as the free graffiti removal service, the council is taking further steps to combat such vandalism.

These include collaborating with police to identify vandals and seek prosecutions, use enforcement powers where property owners don’t use the council’s graffiti removal services, and promoting the use of public art murals.

By Isabel Ramirez a CLose family friend of Damilola taylor, the schoolboy who was killed 23 years ago in Peckham, is holding a memorial event in his honour.

The event will consist of a special church service and afternoon tea to remember the ten-year-old who was killed on September 27, 2000, after being stabbed to death on his way home from Peckham Library.

His family had moved over from Nigeria just four months earlier in the hope of a better life.

Monday, November 27 marks the

23rd anniversary of this tragic killing, and community activist and close friend of the Taylor family, Eula Clarke told us why it's important to keep Damilola's memory alive.

"His memory inspires us to be a catalyst for positive change," she said, "ensuring all children are protected.

"But we also must celebrate the legacy that has been left behind, like the students who are now trained to become doctors on the Extended Medical Degree at King's."

This course was introduced at King's College University to help bright and talented young people from deprived backgrounds become doctors - which could have included Damilola had he still been alive today.

In 2005, Ms Clarke held an anniversary event and raised thousands for the Damilola Taylor Trust - set up by his parents following his death to support disadvantaged youth.

She hopes this event will be as well received.

Local Democracy Reporter London’s Kids' Xmas Lights project has returned to Soho for a third year in a row – with 14 new winners.

Soho Parish Primary School pupils and proud parents joined singer and Loose Women co-host Brenda Edwards and the Lord Mayor of Westminster cllr Patricia McAllister, to switch on this year’s lights during a ceremony in Archer Street last night.

Some 130 students designed Christmas street lighting based on the themes of lighting, identity of place, and fashion inspired by their local area with a lucky 14 having theirs exhibited across Soho.

Kamila Zelazko, 8, said she was delighted to be one of them and said her Christmas cat cupcake with a flower design was inspired by her love of cats.

This can be found on the corner of Beak Street and Upper James Street.

Mum Natalia said: “I am so excited and very happy. I didn’t believe it at first.

It’s very important for kids because they can realise their ambitions here.

They can move ahead because they understand that this is important in their life and they feel they can achieve their dreams”.

Vesper Barrett, 6, and Emberly Macklin, 6, said it was “amazing and really nice” to see their drawings turned into Christmas lights.

Emberly designed a patterned Christmas bauble because she sees patterns on dresses all the time.

Vesper’s design of one of Santa’s reindeers with a Christmas hat and sparkle won awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Lighting Industry Association.

The lights can be seen on the corner or Archer Street and Rupert Street and

Soho Square.

Vesper’s dad David said the project, which is run by Architecture for kids CIC, means a lot to the kids and the area.

He said: “There is often one view of Soho and that is it’s an entertainment area but there are businesses and schools here. When you get out and see things like this it reminds you that are are part of the community. It’s very important as it shows the range and diversity of Soho.”

Seraphine Bhajun, who won last year, said seeing her work lit up made her feel special. She said: “It means I can get my work shown and it is valued.”

The children researched local buildings, communities, cultures and traditions – exploring the role light plays in each of them and how they create feelings of identity and a sense of place.

They also visited the London Fashion and Textile Museum for inspiration.

Hannah Peaty, assistant head teacher at Soho Parish School, said: “I can’t believe this is the 3rd annual edition, and pupils’ designs are getting more and more experimental and challenging.

“The community is very supportive and goes out of their way to make the it happen… [It] does indeed bring the community together through a celebration of light during the darkest months of the year!”

Antonio Capelao, architect and cofounding director Architecture for kids CIC, said: “It’s such an inspiring and motivating project for the children to be

taking part in – giving them confidence as designers and makers that can contribute to the local environment and community.

“Seeing their artwork lit up around the streets of Soho is such a Christmas gift and something to be proud of for many years to come.”

West End cllr Patrick Lilley, who was credited for helping bring the project to life, said: “This collaboration is more than just an annual event; it’s a synergy of creativity and architectural sensibilities that transforms Soho’s streets into a winter wonderland.”

The project was funded by a number of partners including Westminster City Council, Shaftesbury Capital, Archer Street Bars.

By By Charlotte Lillywhite Local Democracy Reporter A South London council has said planned changes to a busy main road will make its walking and cycling routes better and safer, with the road described as a “mess” in its current state.

It comes after Wandsworth Council approved measures to be included in the transport scheme for Burntwood Lane, in Earlsfield, after residents raised concerns over previous plans.

The council is planning to introduce a 1.8-metre segregated cycle track on the southern side of Burntwood Lane between Beechcroft Road and Aboyne Road, along with a two-metre cycle lane on the northern side segregated where possible between Tranmere Road and Sandgate Lane.

It is also set to widen pavements on the northern side of the road and

install three zebra crossings along it, in addition to three more around the Beechcroft Road mini-roundabout.

The plans were developed in response to concerns raised in a previous public consultation on upgrades to walking and cycling routes on Burntwood Lane.

The consultation, held between December 2022 and January this year, asked the public for views on two major options concerning cycling facilities on the road and supporting measures.

It received more than 1,200 responses from residents.

Labour councillor Jenny Yates, the cabinet member for transport, said the authority had changed the scheme in response to feedback given during the consultation.

She said: “This has allowed us to come up with a revised set of plans that will deliver better and safer routes along Burntwood Lane for both cyclists and pedestrians. Improving safety here will

give more people the choice of making their journeys on foot or by bicycle.”

Changes made to the plans include cutting the number of parking spaces earmarked for removal from around 39 to seven, installing zebra crossings instead of toucan crossings, scrapping proposals for bus stop bypasses and proposing smaller sections of footways to be shared between pedestrians and cyclists.

The council’s transport committee unanimously approved the plans on

November 2. The executive will make a final decision on November 20.

If the scheme is given final approval, council officers will draw up detailed designs of the measures and carry out further consultation before any construction works begin.

A report by officers said the scheme aims to improve safety on the road by reducing speed, upgrade the quality of existing cycle facilities, and add new facilities where possible, along with making it easier for pedestrians to cross

the roads and access local schools.

At the meeting on November 2, Councillor Yates said the road “is a mess, it does need improvement and this scheme will make it a much better road”.

She added: “I’m very keen that we do get on with it. I think the committee, the previous iteration of this committee, first approved the objectives of this scheme back in September 2020 which is now three years ago – so it’s going to be four years by the time it’s all finally in place.”

Man found guilty of murdering Abraham Kallon Convicted: Justice Beckford

By Herbie Russell a man has been found guilty of murdering abraham Kallon - the 24-year-old man who was discovered suffering from serious stab injuries in Denmark hill.

Justice Beckford, 23, of Lambeth was convicted of murder and possession of a blade or sharply pointed article following a trial at the Old Bailey on Monday, November 13.

The Met Police said “extensive analysis of CCTV footage” and a house search had "proved vital" to the conviction.

Abraham Kallon had spent the night at a bar with a friend on Clapham High Street on Friday, December 9, 2022.

After leaving, the friends engaged in a conversation with a group of men and women.

The court heard that men in the group became hostile and one of them stabbed Abraham through an open car window.

Abraham and his friend drove to King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill, where he was discovered by officers at 4.55am on December 10, 2022.

They immediately administered first aid before arranging for Abraham to be treated by medics. Tragically, he died in hospital a short time later.

Police launched an investigation, trawling through CCTV footage from the roads around Clapham High Street.

They identified Justice Beckford and officers tracked him down to an address in Bexley where he was arrested a week

after the murder.

Detectives searched a separate address linked to Beckford in Herne Hill where they found a black jacket that matched the one he’d been wearing on the night of the murder. It had traces of Abraham’s blood on it.

Detective Sergeant Jake Good from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said: “Our thoughts remain with Abraham’s family and friends who have had to sit through a trial and listen to details of the night he was killed.

“The thorough work carried out during this investigation proved vital to linking Beckford with the scene. It was the key CCTV footage and DNA analysis of blood found on the defendant's clothes following the murder that led to the jury finding him guilty.

“Beckford now faces a lengthy prison sentence for his actions.”

The post-mortem examination gave the cause of Abraham’s death as stab injuries.

Beckford will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Thursday, November 23.

oWners of a Walworth cafe claim 'non-stop' road works, due to the council's plan to pedestrianise streets, are causing them to lose so much money that they may have to close.

The owners of RudeNboomin, a cafe just off Walworth Road, said the last year and a half have been a 'nightmare' as Lower-Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTN) works are affecting their ability to trade.

Esther Webb, who owns the business with her husband, told us: "We traded for two years with no problems. But in the last year and a half, it's been nonstop."

She explained that as a result of the Streets for People strategy - proposed

by Southwark Council to make streets safer by pedestrianising them Browning Street had been overrun with construction.

"The whole street is blocked off," she said. "You can't even see our cafe when you walk down, so every time work is being done we lose most of our footfall

They claim residents pushed back the council's original idea of creating a parklet on the road - due to the noise and disturbance it would cause.

As it stands, the street was already pedestrianised before the most recent works - which Esther said came with its own share of issues.

"We've had to deal with crackheads being aggressive, people [defecating] in the path," she claimed, "We even had to ask for the seats the council put in during lockdown to be removed because it was just encouraging anti-social behaviour."

But the couple said they had not expected these current works - to widen the footpath and cycle lane and plant two trees - to cause such disruption.

"We had no idea they'd be doing such major groundwork just to plant a couple of trees. Before it started, the council told us they would do everything to minimise the impact on our business," she claimed.

This current phase of construction began in October and according to Southwark Council's website, it is due to

be completed in December - but Esther says it will likely be 'too late' for the business.

"The council keep saying it will be so good for our business when it's finished," she continued, "but at this point - we won't get there.

"Short of a miracle we will have to close in the new year as we have not made enough these last two months to see us through the quiet period of December to March."

Esther added that this was the ninth lot of road closures in the last year and a half. She said things had gotten so bad that they were unable to pay themselves and lost around £1,500 in October alone.

As such, they are asking for compensation from the council, to cover the cost of the business they have lost, which they claim, are a direct result of these road works.

We approached the council for comment and asked if they would consider compensating them to cover the business they claim to have lost - but they did not respond.

By Herbie Russell a south London caretaker has been convicted of murdering a 24-year-old Deptford woman, who body was never found.

Fifty-five-year-old Mark Moodie is believed he dumped Maureen Gitau's body in a wheelie bin.

Moodie, who was from Woolwich, was found guilty of murder at Woolwich Crown Court, on Thursday, November 16.

Police never located Maureen Gitau's body, despite searching for almost

20,000 hours, and say it was incinerated at a rubbish processing plant before 'officers were able to stop the waste processing process.'

Moodie will be sentenced at a later date.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn described Moodie as a “contemptible individual” who “cruelly prevented” the family from laying Maureen’s body to rest.

Much-loved Maureen was last seen on Monday, December 5, leaving her home in Deptford.

reveal that she met Moodie at Richmond House, a development in Blackheath Hill, that same evening.

The pair knew each other from when they worked as cleaners together and had stayed in touch.

Moodie also worked as a caretaker at Richmond House so had access to the storerooms there.

Police said Maureen met up with Moodie and they went into the storerooms before Moodie murdered her.

Moodie is then believed to have dumped her body in a large wheelie

refuse bin which was taken to a refuse plant three days later.

Maureen was reported missing on Saturday, December 10, and officers were able to trace her movements via phone and CCTV. Phone records showed Moodie had called Maureen before she died and CCTV captured the meeting.

Police spoke to Moodie over the phone on Wednesday, December 14, realised he was lying, and later arrested him.

CCTV also showed Moody moving a large wheelie bin around the basement

area wearing surgical gloves.

A 20,000-hour search involving 325 Licensed search officers ensued, with police picking through 2,750 tonnes of rubbish, from January 9 to February 23.

Sadly, Maureen's body was never found.

DCI Blackburn said: "My thoughts today are with Maureen's family, who have been cruelly prevented from putting a much loved daughter, sister, niece and cousin to rest.

“I am glad we have been able to bring to justice the man responsible for her death.”

'Sergeant was shot after failures in the searching of his killer'

By Herbie Russell PoLiCe offiCers failed to properly search the man who fatally shot a south London sergeant, an inquest has ruled.

A coroner concluded that Sgt Matt Ratana, who was murdered at the Croydon custody centre in 2020, was “unlawfully” killed, following an inquest at Croydon Town Hall on Monday, November 13.

Colleagues have paid tribute to the “popular” 54-year-old officer, who had also worked at Walworth Police Station, before being taken away by an “appalling act of violence”.

His killer Louis de Zoysa, 26-years-old at the time of sentencing, was handed a whole life term of imprisonment for murder in July. During the trial his legal team said he was suffering an autistic meltdown at the time of the shooting.

De Zoysa was first arrested and searched by police officers in September

2020, who found bullets in his pocket.

But they failed to find an antique firearm that he’d concealed in an underarm holster.

Hours later, while being held at the Croydon custody centre, he opened fire on Matt Ratana, killing him.

In the inquest, the coroner concluded that “there were failures in the searching and observations of Louis de Zoysa”, a Met Police statement said.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) identified learning points for two arresting police constables around the searching and transportation of trainees.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner (DAC) Stuart Cundy, said: “The arresting officers recognised that their search and observations of de Zoysa could have been more systematic, and should have found the firearm.

“Later at the police station these same officers showed great courage in disarming de Zoysa whilst he continued

to fire the gun. I admire their bravery and that of everyone who was in the custody centre that night.”

The IOPC has also recommended that the National Police Chief’s Council put handheld metal detectors in police vehicles to help with searches.

Since then, over 4,300 detectors have been deployed for officers to use in custody suites and police vehicles.

DAC Cundy, said: “My first thoughts are with Matt’s partner Su and his family. The appalling act of violence that stole Matt from them continues to have a lasting impact on all his loved ones and the large number of people whose lives he touched, both inside and outside of the Met. “At the time of his tragic murder just over three years ago, Matt had served the public for almost three decades.

Like others, when I heard Matt had been fatally shot I was utterly shocked.

The accounts of the officers who gave evidence highlighted the dangers and the challenges police officers face."

bermondsey nurse gets british emPire medal

By Isabel Ramirez a bermonDseY nurse, who helped to ensure the public was safe at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, has been recognised with a british empire medal.

Peter Hollely has been a volunteer for St John's Ambulance for 24 years, so he said it is 'a real honour' to be noticed for his work.

The 37-year-old senior nurse, who lives in Bermondsey, told us: "I started when I was young as a cadet and went from there. None of my family are in

the charity but I wanted to be in public service."

In his time at St John's, Peter has been a volunteer nurse, ambulance crew member and operational commander at many major events in London, like Notting Hill Carnival and the Coronation.

He explained: "I basically ensure everyone is safe and gets efficient medical assistance at big events. We are experts in delivering medical provision in crowds."

Last year, he was in this role for Operation London Bridge - the late

Queen's funeral - and has now received a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his contribution, along with two other volunteers.

Speaking after being awarded his medal at a ceremony at the Tower of London, Peter said: "I lost my mum fourteen years ago but she would be screaming from the rooftops if she was here.

"I am extremely proud and honoured to be the person accepting this award but behind me, there are hundreds of people who helped this plan be delivered."

camberwell woman receives mbe for tireless service to her council estate

Peter is currently Head of Nursing for Acute, Urgent and Emergency Care at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust.

He said with his two roles, he splits his time between delivering care on the ground and planning.

For Operation London Bridge, Peter was given leave by the NHS to focus on his role at St John's.

He then worked across more than thirty treatment centres and coordinated the work of all volunteers, dozens of ambulances, and cycle responder teams.

Peter said he was thanked in person

for his work by King Charles III himself, and commented that the King was 'very warm and welcoming.'

But this wasn't his first time meeting royalty. "When I was sixteen," he continued, "I won Cadet of the Year and got to meet Princess Anne. She was an amazing woman."

He added that he's looking forward to the Royal garden party next summer, which he said he will be attending with his loving husband.

christmas 'wonderland' event coming to walworth A cake was made to celebrate Valerie Fenn getting the MBE

By Herbie Russell a CamberWeLL woman has received an mbe for her sixteen years of tireless service to the elmington estate.

Valerie Fenn, 82, was awarded her medal at Buckingham Palace by Princess Anne on Thursday, November 2.

Over the last two decades, Valerie has organised holiday trips for estate residents, got security doors installed and revitalised the green with flowers and an improved play area.

The Elmington Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TRA) Chair said “it was an absolutely fantastic day” that

she would “never forget”.

Valerie, who is disabled, arrived at the Palace in a dial-a-ride bus which became her private vehicle for the day.

“I was a little bit scared because there were so many police with guns. We had to be searched outside Buckingham Place - but they didn’t really search my bag that much,” Valerie said.

But Valerie quickly got into the swing of things and was soon waving to crowds of tourists who, mistaking her for a member of the royal family, swarmed around her.

“I was waving like the Queen. There were so many tourists taking pictures,” Valerie said.

She was then taken inside the palace

Valerie Fenn at the Fox on the Hill pub after receiving her award where she met Princess Anne in the Throne Room. Valerie said: “What a lovely, lovely, natural, down-to-earth lady she was. She said ‘you’ve done such good work.”

She finished the day with a trip to the Fox on the Hill Wetherspoons in Denmark to celebrate her award with friends and family.

In her sixteen years as TRA chair, she has kick-started countless initiatives and projects that have enriched the lives of its residents. Her hard work has seen residents benefit from a parking permit system, regular ‘Fish & Chip Days’ for the elderly and Easter egg hunts for the kids.

“It was a day I’ll never forget,” she said.

On Thursday 7 December, St Peter’s Church will be transformed into a Christmas wonderland.

There will be a Christmas market with street food and drink from twenty outdoor stalls, St Peter’s School choir, a DJ and facepainting.

One of the pop-up stalls will be from Community Cycleworks, an organisation that runs a bike fixing programme on the Aylesbury Estate. They will be donating a bike as a prize in the raffle.

Last time, a Guy's and St Thomas' employee who'd had her bike stolen won the free bike.

Visitors are encouraged to wear their

favourite Christmas outfit for the ‘best festively dressed’ contest.

There’ll also be a young entrepreneur’s zone showcasing the creative skills of young people working with Abi & Fam Creative Zone.

Guests can get their creative juices flowing at an array of craft stalls or they can step inside the Crypt for some fresh bakes from Saint Louie.

There will be a raffle with prizes, that will be raising money for Robes - a charity that helps those experiencing homelessness in Southwark and Lambeth.

By Joe Coughlan Local Democracy Reporter Plans for a set of tower blocks up to 36 storeys tall in South London have moved forward as the site has been sold after being up for sale for over a year.

Galliard Homes announced on November 13 that the developer and its partner, City Developments Limited, had purchased the Morden Wharf development in Greenwich Peninsula.

The project looks to deliver a series of 12 tower blocks including 1,500 new

The Shaftesbury building opened at Springfield University Hospital in Tooting last month and sits at the heart of a huge ongoing development.

The new building is home to forensic services for patients that need specialist mental health care. It has four inpatient wards, each with a lounge, dining room, recreational space and two gardens.

It also has corporate offices, artwork, a restaurant and a gym which will open in the coming months.

It follows the opening of the neighbouring Trinity building in December 2022, which also has four inpatient wards and provides a variety of mental health services to residents in Wandsworth, Richmond, Kingston, Merton and Sutton.

More than 700 patients and staff have now moved into the two new buildings.

The mental health facilities are part of the new Springfield Village development, which will include more than 800 new homes, shops, a

public square and a 32-acre public park by 2026.

Vanessa Ford, chief executive of South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, said the hospital’s transformation is the start of a “new era for local mental health services” which aims to break stigma by bringing facilities closer to residents. She said the trust wants to build better environments for patients and staff.

Ms Ford added: “The new Shaftesbury building delivers bright, modern environments that improves inpatient care and supports recovery for people struggling with complex mental health issues.

"Along with Trinity and the wider Springfield Village, it symbolises just how much we can achieve through innovative co-design and co-production. We now look ahead to investing more than £120m to develop further new hospital buildings across South West London.”

Planned works include the trust’s £110m revamp of Tolworth Hospital in Kingston, which is set to start in 2024 for completion in 2027.

Works are also due to begin on the £11m redevelopment of Barnes Hospital in Richmond and are due to be finished in 2025.

Tim Barnes of the Greenwich Society said at the meeting that he was concerned the towers would jeopardise the world heritage status of the area. Labour MP for Greenwich and Woolwich Matthew Pennycook also said in a letter to Greenwich Council that he felt the towers were “inappropriate”.

Galliard Homes said in a statement that the project will provide 50,000 square feet of space for shops and restaurants. It will also reportedly upgrade the existing Thames Path in the area.

The sale marks the first partnership between Galliard Homes and City Developments Limited (CDL), the latter of which is a Singapore-based global real estate company.

Stephen Conway, Executive Chairman at Galliard Homes, said in a statement: “Galliard Homes is delighted to announce our partnership with CDL, to provide much-needed homes within Greenwich. CDL’s worldwide reputation as an industry leader, marked by their commitment to delivering first-class development across numerous asset classes, aligns

with our values. We hope this will be the first of many more future projects together.”

Mike Hood, CEO of LandsecU+I, said the developer was proud of its master plan for Morden Wharf that it had created alongside Morden College.

He said the company will continue to invest in mixed use urban regeneration projects over the next five years.

Meryl Davies, CEO of Morden College, added that the sale would help the charity to support elderly people in the area by providing a home for residents to live independently.

Developers LandsecU+I and freeholder Morden College put the site up for sale in October 2022. The plans for the project were originally approved at a council meeting in September 2021 and received a mixed reaction from locals.

Local Democracy Reporter Sadiq Khan has been accused of being “asleep on the job” of reforming the Met Police, after it emerged that a study into stop and search has not been delivered – more than three years since it was promised.

March this year appear to have had little success, at least according to the response given to Mr Blackie in July, which said meetings between City Hall and the Met were “ongoing”.

Mr Blackie said: “Sadiq Khan promised this study so that Londoners can properly understand how stop and search is being conducted in our city – but yet again it’s warm words and weak action from the mayor.

“Black Londoners continue to be disproportionately targeted by stop and search. The experience can be traumatic, so we urgently need this review to rebuild trust in stop and search… I’m astonished to find out that he’s [the mayor] simply done nothing.”

He added: “How can the Met Police learn how to be better when it’s not even bothering to review what’s gone wrong in the past? This is just another sign of a mayor who is asleep on the job.”

Mr Blackie said Mr Khan “must get this study done and publish the results before the election”, which takes place on May 2, 2024.

A spokesman for the mayor said Mr Khan “is determined to improve trust and confidence in the Metropolitan Police and to address real community concerns about the disproportionality in the use of certain police powers and tactics affecting Black Londoners”.

He said the November 2020 Action Plan

“has already introduced stricter oversight of the use of stop and search in London by communities, completed a review of the use of handcuffs by officers before arrest which has led to a 20 per cent drop in the use of handcuffs in non-arrest scenarios – like stop and search – and carried out a pilot to identify any disproportionality relating to the ethnicity of drivers stopped by the police” He admitted however: “Clearly more must be done to tackle disproportionality and the Mayor will continue to support and hold the Met to account on delivering the urgent improvements needed.

“The Met are enhancing the supervision of all stop and searches as part of the New Met for London Plan and this work is alongside precision stop and search pilots in high crime areas to improve community engagement.”

He insisted that the study, “previously delayed due to data sharing issues, is also taking shape”.

A Met Police spokeswoman said the force will “continue to actively work with the mayor’s office to progress the body worn video camera study”.

She also said: “Whilst Stop and Search is a significant tool and tactic in combatting crime, we know that when done wrong it can have a significant impact on individuals and the wider community….

“The Met are trialling a new approach called ‘Precision Stop and Search’. It’s

‘ridiculous’. She said: “People who are elderly need it to deposit money. There are no banks here anymore. For people who have mobility issues, it’s not fair.

“It’s an essential shop. I often visit two or three times a week. Today I was returning a parcel. There needs to be a petition against it [the closure].”

Nick Brown, 51, said his nearest Post Office branch would be a 15-minute bus ride away in Brixton if the Clapham branch closed.

He said: “It’s a really bad idea because there’s always a queue of people. I come here once a week. It’s terrible.”

Annabelle Windsor, 31, who visits the Clapham Common branch every week, said: “I’m really annoyed. There’s a queue here every single day. For older people, going to Brixton or Balham is not that easy.”

Dee Hays, 45, added: “It’s always busy when you go in there. You need it for the older people. The staff is lovely and they have been there for years. It’s sad.”

Post Office said it was hoping to open a till branch within a local shop if there was interest.

Existing Post Offices within two miles of Clapham Common are: Balham Hill Post Office, located next to Clapham South tube station, Cedars Post Office on Queenstown Road, Alfriston Road Post Office in Battersea and Balham Post Office.

Post Office said it had begun a six-week consultation on the planned closure.

The project was intended to examine how officers are using stop and search, through the use of body worn video cameras which police wear on their clothing.

Liberal Democrat mayoral candidate Rob Blackie said the mayor had “simply done nothing” to ensure the study’s completion.

A Freedom of Information response from City Hall to Mr Blackie in July this year stated there are “no current outcomes or timelines we can provide on the progression of the project”.

The mayor’s team told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that the study had been “delayed due to data sharing issues” but insisted it was now “taking shape”.

The project was mentioned earlier this year in Baroness Casey’s scathing review of the Met’s culture, which found the force to be institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic According to her report, the study was first discussed by the mayor’s office and the Met in 2018, “but disagreements over the project’s aims, terms of reference and other matters meant that it wasn’t announced until November 2020 as part of the Mayoral Action Plan”.

Over the following two and a half years, disagreements between City Hall and the Met are said to have continued, including over who “would have access to the raw footage and how the videos would be coded”.

A look at the first collection of footage in July 2022 by the Mayor’s office found “huge variation across coders’ level of detail and on key information including use of Taser, use of PAVA [an incapacitant spray], subjects fleeing the scene, and subjects in possession of a weapon”.

Baroness Casey’s Review adds: “Officers were often coding the same encounter in very different ways.

“MOPAC [the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime] held debrief sessions with the Met in October 2022 to discuss the issues, but the Review was told only four of the initial 20 coders attended, some of whom had not done any coding.”

Clapham residents hit out at Post Office closure plans Local Democracy Reporter South London residents have hit out at plans to close their local Post Office – claiming the under-threat branch is always packed with customers.

Post Office intends to close its Clapham Common branch early next year so that the landlord can redevelop the building.

In the future customers will have to take a bus ride to Battersea, Balham or Brixton to reach their nearest Post Office shop.

Camberwell Fair: The debaucherous festival that got shut down in 1855

By Herbie Russell A group of angry residents have demanded an end to the all-night drinking, parties and debauchery conducted by ‘undesirables’ on Camberwell Green. While that could well be an extract from a newspaper article written any time over the last year, this was almost 150 years ago.

No Right to Party

Introducing the Camberwell Fair; a festival of bizarre circus acts, boozing and music, that had people tearing their hair out from 1279 to 1855.

Rural Beginnings

Camberwell Fair began in 1279, on the grounds of St Giles’ Church. With Camberwell still a rural community throughout the Medieval period, it would’ve had a certain rustic charm.

This was a place people could go to show their best cow, buy handfuls of horse chestnuts or play a game of skittles.

Speaking to the Southwark News in 2018, local theatre director John Whelan said: “It was a place to trade, a place to party and enjoy yourself, and a place to see people from around the community who you wouldn’t see at any other time of the year.”

Urban Temptations

By the 1800s, Camberwell was being enveloped by London’s urban sprawl, its countryside character slowly being eroded.

Camberwell Fair moved to Camberwell Green during this period and reduced its three-week programme to three days.

By then, the fair had adopted the slogan ‘Rare doing at Camberwell Fair’ and new attractions were replacing the activities of old.

John Whelan said: “In 1855 there

would have been fortune tellers and those kinds of things. It would have evolved and changed as society changed.”

Unfortunately for the area’s growing middle class, for whom a raucous festival was already a nuisance, it wasn’t just fortune tellers setting up shop on Camberwell Green.

In the early 19th century, in a bid to quell the revelry, applications were made at Bow Street Magistrates Court for “12 officers to keep the peace at the Fairs of Camberwell and Peckham, at 5 shillings per day”.

And in 1832, having already banned Peckham Fair, the Camberwell Vestry renewed its campaign against Camberwell’s equivalent.

“Such institutions were intended to be marts for trade and not sources of dissipation and riot,” the Vestry wrote.

By 1855, a local Committee for the Abolition of Camberwell Fair was set up by leading residents.

They pressurised the parish authorities into buying the Green, and closing down the fair, with the help of the police.

Camberwell Green remains a contested space. Only last summer, local residents were complaining about “dodgy” people whose anti-social

drinking was a blight on the park.

In fact, Southwark Council became so concerned by crime in the area that they removed the table tennis tables in a controversial decision that went viral.

But ultimately, this story has a happy ending. In 2015, Camberwell Fair returned and it's been a regular fixture ever since.

Modern visitors can expect DJs, stalls from local restaurants, arts and crafts, and community workshops.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a circus monkey - and that's probably for the best.

Prince Jamie comes with seX, sorcery and suckers

Fashion in the face of oppression i have heard various reasons why people had a yearning for a career on the stage but Jamie mawson’s strange encounter beats them all, writes Michael Holland...

‘When I was fifteen,’ he begins, ‘I went to see an immersive performance

by Punchdrunk at Battersea Power Station. Whilst in the lift, a performer said, “You can explore as far as your imagination can go”, and asked who wasn’t afraid. I raised my hand and was then swiftly kicked out of the lift. I then had to navigate the immersive journey of the show alone in the dark. At one point I crawled through a fireplace and discovered an actor eating multiple apples. This experience made me see a completely different side to performance art and how big our imaginations can be when given a shake-up.’

I think Jamie’s family were also shaken up when he returned home and told them he wanted to be an actor. Of course, they had reservations at first but, he tells me, ‘As soon as they saw how much I loved it, they became very supportive.’

Jamie opted for the iconic East 15 Acting School where Joan Littlewood’s legendary workshops changed the future of theatre and which has turned out some of Britain’s best actors for

decades. They prepare their students for any acting role, as Jamie knows well: ‘We once spent three weeks in character recreating a Russian gulag, and building a road to Moscow on the school’s grounds,’ he remembers. ‘I also once had to spend two hours a week for six weeks pretending to be a hippopotamus. It really was an experience!’

An experience that has made Jamie fearless in what roles he takes on. ‘I once did a gender-swapped Beauty and The Beast with five actors where I played Beau (Belle). I loved the collaboration involved in creating the show. The writer played The Beast and the company devised the entire show… I love the twoway energy between the actors and the audience. You both feed off each other.

The feeling of having the audience on your side really puts the wind in your sails.’

Jamie is now rehearsing for the Southwark Playhouse Christmas show, Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch, a musical parody written

by Robyn Grant and Daniel Foxx, which will tour the UK in 2024.

Jamie has been working with the same theatre company for seven years, so the part of Prince Eric was written for Jamie. ‘My part is very different from

the Disney version; my Prince Eric is excitable, ridiculous, a bit clueless, wellintentioned but useless - a classic fop!’

He claims before adding that he also plays other parts.

The press blurb claims: ‘Disney Diva, Ursula, gives her take on what really happened all those years ago under the sea. With an original hot pop soundtrack and trademark filthy humour, it’s time to take the plunge and dive into this year’s hottest night out.

Cruella told her side, and Maleficent’s had her moment. Now the legendary queer queen is ready to spill, in this tellall tale of sex, sorcery and suckers.’

Having read earlier reviews of Unfortunate I can tell that this is going to be the perfect antidote to saccharine Christmas shows. I’ve booked my tickets already.

i Was amazed at how many top shops and designers are Jewish but was disturbed to find, when the visiting the fashion City exhibition, that most people do not know this fact because Jewish tailors and designers felt a need to hide their background, writes Michael Holland...

For millennia, Jews have been hounded out of countries around the world, beaten, tortured, murdered and moved on. Each time having to pick up and start again somewhere else until the next time.

English Christians once cast out the Jews in the 13th century; in 1290 they were expelled by Edward 1 in exchange for Parliament paying off his war debts.

They were even made to wear badges to identify themselves. And that is in England. This, though, happened all over Europe.

With the Russian pogroms of the late 19th century the Jews were once again forced to flee and many came to England and settled in the big cities. They found a home in the East End of London but were barred from many occupations; tailoring, however, was one job they were allowed to do.

Through oppression, hard graft and looking out for each other, the Jews moved slowly up the ladder. From working in sweatshops for others they began their own small tailoring factories, eventually earning good commissions from well-known shops; they opened their own shops to clothe the locals in the days when everyone had to have a suit for ‘Sunday best’, and their products began to

have more of a presence.

A large proportion of the Carnaby Street stores were opened by Jewish tailors and designers. Other West End stores were Jewish-owned: Cecil Gee and Moss Bros being two of the most well-known.

Rebecca Nagli became the famous designer Peggy Lewis; Chaskiel Kupferstein opted for Charles and produced women’s clothing under the brand name “Koupy’; Frederick Weinbaum created his own fake biography to become known to famous couturiers as Frederick Starke. The legendary Marks & Spencer was one of the first large businesses to bear a Jewish name.

Mr Fish was so powerful he had men wearing garish kipper ties, and almost had men in maxi dresses! The Jewish impact on British fashion was complete when they clothed Hendrix, Caine, Jagger, Bowie and Bond in the 60s and 70s - Even Dot Cotton. But, perhaps, the absolute highlight was Lady Diana wearing a coat

by Belville Sassoon.

Fashion City does much to let the world know how creative Jews are, but their creativity came from centuries of exploitation and injustice and having to do the best with what they were given.

Now, the timeless beauty of what they produced is famous the world over.

murders in leafy dulwich could ruin christmas anne Coates has admitted to being behind several murders in her quiet corner of s.e. London and she doesn’t care who knows it, writes Michael Holland...

Anne is a writer who began putting stories together at an early age: ‘I used to write plays to be performed by my friends when I was at primary school,’ she says. ‘I moved on to poetry and gradually started to write short stories.’

Inspired by Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven she upgraded to Sherlock Holmes and also developed a lifelong love of the horror genre through Dennis Wheatley books. Her mother was a great reader and took the young Anne to the local library, then a good English teacher brought books to life as he read to the class, just like her mother did. With more access to books at school, Anne recalls that she could ‘read to my heart’s content’. Even now, she admits to reading contemporary fiction and books aimed at young adults.

But reading novels did not stop Anne from finding time to write seven nonfiction books: ‘They are a lot easier to write’, she reveals. I asked if she had a preference: ‘They are such different parts of me!’ she starts. ‘I enjoy the discipline of non-fiction but adore the freedom of writing fiction.’

the haYWarD Gallery will present hiroshi sugimoto: time machine, the largest retrospective to date of the internationally renowned artist.

Over the past 50 years, Hiroshi Sugimoto has created some of the most alluringly enigmatic photographs of our time: pictures that are precisely crafted and deeply thought-provoking, familiar yet tantalisingly ambiguous.

Featuring key works from all of the artist’s major photographic series, this retrospective will highlight the artist’s philosophical yet playful inquiry into our understanding of time and memory and the ambiguous character of photography as a medium suited to both documentation and invention.

The exhibition will also include lesser-known works that illuminate the artist’s interest in the history of photography as well as in mathematics and optical sciences. Often employing a large-format wooden camera, mixing his own darkroom chemicals and developing his black-and-white prints by hand, Sugimoto has repeatedly re-explored ideas and practices from 19th century photography, including subjects such as dioramas, wax figures and architecture. In the process, his work has stretched and rearranged concepts of time, space and light that are integral to the medium.

Hiroshi Sugimoto says: “The camera is

a time machine capable of representing the sense of time... The camera can capture more than a single moment, it can capture history, geological time, the concept of eternity, the essence of time itself... The more I think about that sense of time, the more I think this is probably one of the key factors of how humans became humans.”

The subject of time is also explored in two subsequent bodies of work featured in the exhibition: shot in movie palaces as well as drive-ins, Sugimoto’s Theaters (1976 - ) capture entire films with a single long exposure, thus compressing all the dramatic action that appeared on screen into a single image of radiant whiteness.

The exhibition will come to a stunning conclusion with a gallery dedicated to Sugimoto’s Opticks (2018 - ), intensely coloured photographs of prismrefracted light. Taking inspiration from Newton’s research into the properties of light whilst calling to mind colour field painting and artists like Mark Rothko, Opticks presents deeply immersive fields of subtly varying hues.

The past as well as the present haunts her. Will she be able to solve the mystery before Christmas is ruined?’

Anne will use everything for inspiration ‘Anything I read, see, experience can leave a little seed which sometimes germinates months or even years later. Writing a series of crime novels has been eye-opening and inspiring. Characters who may have been subordinate in one book nudge me saying, “It’s my turn now…”’ Minor characters in one book have ended up centre stage further on in the series.

By John Kelly ramPant DuLWiCh hamlet did all the damage in the first half as they extended their unbeaten isthmian League Premier Division run to six games with a 3-1 dismissal of folkestone invicta at Champion hill last weekend.

The majority of the 3,069 crowd celebrated being treated to goals from Michael Chambers, Danny Mills and Ryley Scott in the opening 42 minutes.

Kane Penn had made it 2-1 on 28 minutes. Scott Heard missed the chance to equalise when his effort hit the bar.

It was Dulwich who created the better chances to add a fourth and

the day ended on a sour note for the visitors as their captain Callum Davies was shown a straight red card two minutes from time.

Dulwich manager Hakan Hayrettin has stressed a number of times this season the importance of trying to take a point from away games and then backing it up with three at home.

“I thought we controlled it from start to finish,” Hayrettin said. “I think we were the better team. We go 2-0 up and that’s where we have to manage the game a little better but we didn’t.

We give them a bit of an opener, and then we get back and make it 3-1.

“But, it’s slowly but surely getting there. That’s six league games unbeaten and we need to keep pushing.

Riakporhe didn’t look like he hadn’t fought since last January as he unloaded an opening-round barrage on the former French champion.

Cruiserweight world title hopeful Riakporhe caught his opponent with a low blow in the next round, with Bregeon given time to recover.

But ‘Midnight Train’ Riakporhe showed little sympathy or mercy as he crashed home a massive right to floor Bregeon. Riakporhe waited

as Bregeon beat the count before resuming his attack, and the fight was brought to an end as the towel was thrown in from the Frenchman’s corner at 1.36 in the second round.

Riakporhe’s devastating win was all the more impressive considering it took points decision for Isaac Chamberlin and Chris Billam-Smith to beat Bregeon.

"That's what we do. I'm different, I've changed, I've been working with Angel Fernandez and he's made me realise that in here I'm a totally different animal. I send a message to everybody," Riakporhe said.

"Once I let those hands go, it's over.

Labidi’s spirit in her final was however clearly recognised by the judges. She was voted by the judging panel to be the most spirited fighter in the competition and so received her cheque in addition to a handsome set of trophies.

Tokei fighter claims 'spirited' cash prize a ComPetitor from bermondsey’s tokei martial arts club claimed £1,000 for most spirited fighter at an event in Crystal Palace last weekend.

It was a big turnout at the British Open Kyokushin competition in southeast London, including a Swiss team testing their skills.

The competition was fought under full-contact rules with multiple categories by gender, age, weight and experience. There was a small team of players from Tokei under the guidance and leadership of chief instructor and competitor Sithembiso Majozi.

roY hoDGson has cautioned supporters questioning Crystal Palace’s aspiration levels by pointing out they don’t want to end up like Charlton athletic.

The Eagles have established themselves in the Premier League over the past decade, despite being odds-on favourites to go straight back down after winning promotion in 2013.

Hodgson is currently in his second spell in charge of the club he grew up supporting as a boy, having returned to SE25 in March following four years at the helm between 2017 and 2021.

Last season, the aim was simply to stave off relegation, something he achieved quite comfortably in the end in what was a rare flirtation with the drop from the Eagles.

Asked what should be a realistic expectation from the Palace fanbase moving forward, Hodgson explained different generations would probably provide very different answers.

The Selhurst Park chief said: “Fans will always like to see their team top of the league, of course they would, but fans are a very varied bunch as well.

“I always feel when I’m at press conferences and the word ‘fans’ has come up, I’m thinking what ones are we talking about?

“Are we talking about some of those I meet around my age quite often who say, ‘I’ve been a Palace supporter for 50 years and I still love coming to Selhurst Park’.

“I don’t know what aspirations they have. They are probably very happy at the moment because for the last ten years they’ve been watching their team play in the Premier League, as opposed to when I was a boy watching them play in the Fourth Division. That’s one hell of a jump.

“At one stage, of the 92 league clubs we were probably about 86th or 87th if we were lucky.

“Now we are one of the top 20 teams in the country and have been for the last ten years. But aspirations have always got to be high, hopes have got to be high and the club has got to consistently work to get better and be better.

“But I’ve seen this team improve over the last six years. I think we are a stronger team now than when I came here in 2017.

I think we have recruited some very good players.

“The club will try to recruit more and if we can keep this squad of players together, then who knows how high we can finish.”

Hodgson then gave the example of Alan Curbishley, who ended a fifteen-year spell at Charlton in 2006 having established Palace’s neighbours in the top flight.

The majority of Charlton supporters, however, would counter this suggestion by pointing out it was only a very tiny minority airing such views at the time.

But regardless, it has almost been accepted by the wider football world as fact there was a general sense of weariness with Curbishley at The Valley by the time he left.

And Hodgson raised it once again to point out some Palace fans currently

questioning their club’s ambition should perhaps be careful what they wish for.

He said: “The only reason I temper it is because I’m tired of hearing people talk about moving to the next level.

“Because for me, moving to the next level reminds me of Charlton Football Club whenever I hear we need to move – ‘Curbishley’s got to go because we are only seventh or eighth in the league so we’ve got to get rid of Curbishley’; ‘We’ve had four years of this now and we are still only number eight, we need to move on to the next level.’

“I’m always very wary that for Charlton

fans, all those fans who were speaking out, they should be very ashamed of themselves in a way because they didn’t realise how good it was when Curbishley was there and they were in those lofty positions in the Premier League.”

Hodgson added: “How do I see where the club should be?

“I think the club should continue working in the way it is working and has been working for the last few years, and in particular the way it has been working in the last couple of years when money was made available and very good players were bought into the club.

“An ageing team was rejuvenated, so there is a lot more younger players now.

“So I think the club’s philosophy is the right one and I think it is a philosophy which most fans would agree with.

“I think most fans would probably say that these players we’ve bought in now are top Premiership quality and if we can keep them – we’ve just spoke about keeping four of them signing new contracts – I would see that as a very positive step.”

Palace resume their Premier League campaign this Saturday when they travel to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town at 3pm.

And James wants to build on the momentum of those two results against Spurs and the treble winners as Chelsea prepare to go into the busiest month of the season.

“We’re still a fairly new group. The more time we spend with each other the more understanding we have,” James said.

“That helps us. We have come a long way.

“Our performances in the past five or six weeks have picked up.

“Everyone is happy around the place.

“Our confidence is growing. Results help that – it’s the starting point.

“When we’re performing well as a

team, people are going to try more things and look more confident.

“We’ve had a tough run of games and we’ve picked up some good points.

We have stepped up. We need to keep building on this now.”

James’s campaign has been disrupted by the hamstring injury he sustained in the opening-day 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

The defender started in both the Spurs and City games before being substituted, but he believes it won’t be long he completes a full game.

He explained: “I definitely feel my strength and fitness building up again. Recently, I’ve been able to play

consistently.

“I haven’t been able to play 90 minutes yet, but I’m training and playing hard and pushing the limits every day to get back to my best level.”

James added: “I’m happy to be helping the team again as well.

“After almost three months out, it takes a while to build back up and find your form again.

“Some people think as soon as you come back you should instantly be at the level you left at, but it doesn’t work like that.

“You have to move slow and steady.

That’s what I have been doing – I’m slowly progressing.”

Most of James’s spell as skipper this season has been spent on the sidelines, although he has been happy to consult with one senior pro in particular on what the role involves.

He said: “The captaincy has been great, but it was difficult when I wasn’t fit because it is hard to affect things as much when I’m not with the group all the time.

“Thiago ]Silva] probably helps me the most whenever I’m unsure, or I feel like I need advice on something.

“He is nearly old enough to be my dad, so he is the person I go to.

“It’s not for me to say what sort of captain I am, but I’ve enjoyed it so far. It’s an honour.”

The defender first appeared for the Lions in August 2018 in a 2-2 draw against Middlesborough and has seen plenty of ups and downs during his time at the club.

He will hit the milestone of appearances if he plays against Coventry City on Saturday and says he's proud to reach the landmark - but is still focused on dragging Millwall to a coveted Championship play-off position.

Wallace told our paper: "It's amazing.

It will be the most appearances I've made for any club and it's obviously a nice milestone for me and to have been playing regularly since I've come here, which is always nice.

"When you're at a club for this long, you feel really settled. I'm quite fortunate to have players who have been here as long as me, if not longer, like Hutch [Shaun Hutchinson] and Coops [Jake Cooper] so that obviously helps, especially when it's players you play around like defenders."

"Personally I just want to make as many appearances I can. It's nice the 200 game mark is coming up but obviously I want to play as many as possible. As for the team, we've been getting so close to those play-off spots and we've been gradually getting better every season and it would be nice to make that final step and get into the play-offs".

The 30-year-old did not hesitate when asked about his favourite memory from his five years at The Den, immediately referencing his lastminute winner against Everton in the FA Cup. The Lions were handed a daunting task when they were drawn to face Marco Silva's side in the fourth round of the competition in January 2019, but goals from Lee Gregory, Cooper and eventually Wallace led to a famous 3-2 win that left The Den delirious.

Wallace would then score the winning goal against AFC Wimbledon in the fifth round before Millwall took Brighton all the way to penalties in a devastating quarter-final loss.

Asked about his favourite moment, Wallace said: "The Everton goal. That was amazing. I think the season before

Justin CLarKe became afC Wimbledon’s youngest-ever player when he made his debut in the Dons’ 1-0 EFL Trophy defeat to Wycombe Wanderers at adams Park last weekend.

Striker Clarke is just fifteen years of age and he had to miss school to train with Johnnie Jackson’s first team on Friday.

“We had some moments, we missed the penalty and I feel like their keeper has pulled off an unbelievable save at the end. I don’t know how he kept that one out. We would have deserved a draw on the balance of play.

“Our shape was a lot better in the second half, we had looked a little disjointed in the first half an hour. We won the ball in better areas during the second and broke off our shape.

There were a few moments where we counter-attacked well. Ironically, we conceded in the period when we were on top.

“The response to the goal was good and we ended the game pushing hard for an equaliser with three young kids on the pitch.

“It was a fantastic moment [for Clarke]. It’s great as a coach to give young lads opportunities. Junior Nkeng and Kai Jennings have already had little tastes of it. Justin Clarke got his opportunity, he trained with us [the day before], we had to take him out of school. The lads have been great around him and he’s one we have really high hopes for.

“They were all bright when they came on - it’s fantastic for the club.”

Josh PassLeY scored the only goal of the game as bromley recorded an eighth consecutive national League home win by beating afC fylde last weekend.

hodgson: Deals for duo ‘most important’ business

Eze, 25, and Olise, 21, signed new contracts this season until the end of 2026-27, the latter despite strong interest from Chelsea in the summer.

Eze and Olise are two of the most

exciting attackers in the Premier League, and over his two spells at Selhurst Park Hodgson has adeptly blended that kind of talent with less eye-catching, more experienced players such as Joel Ward, Will Hughes and Jeffrey Schlupp.

During the International break, Hodgson reflected on what the Eagles have got right as they have established themselves as a solid Premier League side over the last decade, and how they can take the next step.

“It's in any leader's books you care

“The trick, I think, is going to be now – and I'm speaking personally – to build upon that by bringing in one or two more pieces which can make us a bit better. But maybe the most important thing of all is what the club succeeded in doing this year: keeping Eze and Olise.”

By John Kelly miChaeL aPPLeton said the attitude of his players was “spoton” as Charlton athletic reached the second round of the efL Trophy with a 3-0 win over Sutton united at the valley on tuesday night.

The Addicks took the lead on twelve minutes when Scott Fraser found Corey Blackett-Taylor who fired leftfooted into the far corner.

Blackett-Taylor had the chance to make it 2-0 after Tyreece Campbell had been brought down by Harry Beautyman, but he struck his penalty off the post.

The hosts did double their advantage five minutes into the second half when Campbell found Conor McGrandles on the edge of the box and his shot deflected past goalkeeper Steve Arnold.

Campbell and Fraser were involved in the third goal in the 68th minute as Charlton emphatically sealed their place in the last 32. Campbell dispossessed Beautyman and passed to Fraser whose cross was headed home by substitute Alfie May, the striker’s fifteenth goal of the season.

“I thought their attitude was spoton,” head coach Appleton said postmatch. “They just showed a really good appetite for the game. There

was a hunger and desire. Since the back-to-back defeats that’s five games unbeaten again now and we’re going in the right direction.”

Appleton was particularly pleased for McGrandles.

“I’ve said it loads of times, I know what the kid’s capable of. I had him for two years at Lincoln and he was my captain in my final year,” Appleton said.

“If he stays injury-free and continues on his path in terms of fitness and getting the minutes in, you’ll see a very, very different Conor McGrandles to what you’ve seen so far.”

Charlton, who had to avoid defeat to go through, finished runners-up in

Group B of the southern section and will find out their opponents in the next round when the draw is made live on Sky Sports News at 6.30pm this Friday.

On Saturday, Charlton make their longest trip of the League One season to take on Carlisle United.

“They’ve had a couple of positive results this year that have surprised everyone,” Appleton said. “They beat Bolton earlier on in the season.

Any side that can turn Bolton over obviously needs respecting.

“Paul Simpson is a top guy, a real gent in the football world. He did a brilliant job for Carlisle last year getting them promoted.

“We’ve got to make sure that we go up there with the same spirit that we’ve shown in previous away games to try and get the three points.”
