The fate of the now notorious South Norwood flats have become an ongoing issue for the past two administrations.

The high-rise flats gained national attention in 2021, following a highly publicised ITV report into the squalid conditions residents were living in.

Rampant damp and mould as well as negligent repairs from Croydon’s former repairs contractor Axis were just some of the complaints made by residents.

When the Local Democracy Reporting Service spoke to long-time Regina Road resident Kingomzila Ludiambele earlier this year, she said: “These buildings aren’t good any more, they have to demolish them and build new ones.

"They asked us to choose whether to come back, but if the place I go to is fine I would stay there. Many flats are empty now because of the problems. It was terrible.”

At a cabinet meeting last Wednesday, Mayor Jason Perry admitted: “We will all remember the shame bought on Croydon when the horrendous conditions at Regina road were highlighted on ITV news.”

In response, Croydon councillors confirmed they will listen to the overwhelming 88.1 per cent of residents who voted in favour of the building’s renewal.

The council agreed on a new direct delivery model for the project that outlined their intention for the demolition of the three high-rise flat complexes.

Subject to planning, the plans also call for replacing the 191 council flats with up to 450 homes, at least 200 of which would be council-owned.

The council laid out their plan to regenerate the flats in two phases.

According to the council: “Phase one would see an estimated 86 new council homes built on the north side of Regina Road, on the site of the 1-87 tower block and adjacent homes, plus an estimated

The council are in the process of finding a developer partner to begin the process, with the redevelopment’s funding coming from their capital revenue.

Mayor of Croydon, Jason Perry said: “I’m committed to improving standards in council homes and putting residents at the heart of decisions about housing services.

"We are listening to Regina Road residents at every stage of this process, and we thank everyone who has given their views on the emerging designs.

"The project is progressing at pace, and we look forward to reaching further milestones in the new year as we invest in new council housing.”

By Isabel Ramirez a FRee festive celebration will see waterloo's famous graffiti tunnel transformed - with a snowboard simulator and a giant screening of home alone 2.

Miracle on Leake Street, the alternative festive celebration, returns to Waterloo on Thursday 7 December for its fifth year.

Centred around a big screening of the Christmas family favourite, Home Alone 2, the unique event will begin with a cabaret performance from Pi the Mime.

Guests can take part in wreath-making classes, have their faces painted or check out the Christmas craft market for some unique gifts.

With (machine-blown) snow in the air, there will also be the chance to compete with friends and family on a snowboard simulator whilst listening to tunes provided by Santa - who is DJing the event.

Putting the unique setting to good use, one of Leake Street's resident artists will be running free workshops so people can try their hand at doing some graffiti of their own.

It is all put together by WeAreWaterloo and South Bank London. The event is free but they are collecting on the night for Waterloo Foodbank.

Children are chuffed that Sophie is back where she belongs

By Herbie Russell a human-shapeD parking sign stolen from outside a herne hill school has been returned over three weeks after it went missing.

Parents at Judith Kerr Primary School (JKPS) were "outraged" to find Sophie had been snatched from outside the school gates, on Tuesday, October 10.

The one-metre tall humanoid cutout had been instrumental in making the roads safer around the school so parents launched a search.

Following a police investigation, the details of which the Met has not

shared, Sophie was returned to the school on Thursday, November 2.

Celeste Hicks, one of the parents who’d led the search, said: “Sophie is back! [It’s a] minor miracle. The only damage is that they scratched off the JKPS logo.

"We're so happy to have Sophie back, especially as it means we don't have to use precious school resources to replace her. It's great to know that she can get back to work helping the children to get to school safely, but this time I've invested in a lock!"

Sophie is one of three one-metre-tall, humanoid signs that parents bought in June to make the traffic situation safer around the school.

Celeste said some parents had become “scared” to walk their kids to school because parked cars blocked drivers’ sight lines on Half Moon Lane.

Cars parked illegally on yellow lines were also causing vehicles to come “flying around corners”, putting children at risk.

According to Celeste, the traffic situation began to deteriorate once more without Sophie's presence.

Thankfully, over three weeks after she was reported missing, police have secured the sign's return.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “The parking sign has now been returned to the school after the Police intervened to get back the stolen property.”

By Isabel Ramirez parents in Dulwich, who say muggings are happening to children ‘almost daily’, have started doing street patrols to keep kids safe after school.

This week (Monday November 6) marked the start of the daily action that is designed to increase adult presence on the roads after school.

Father-of-two, Dr Matthew Allen, from Dulwich, said he had become increasingly aware of muggings taking place when children are on their way home.

"A boy tried to mug my son on the way home from school one day," he told us, "luckily he was able to get away by

running into the road. But it definitely had an effect on him."

Fellow parent, Vanessa Perrin, shared a similar experience: "I moved here two years ago - in that time I have been present for a mugging and then my son was mugged.

"It's robbing our children of their freedom and youth."

Determined to do something about it, they said they set up WhatsApp groups in the community, which they claim were going off 'almost daily' with reports of a mugging or attempted mugging.

"We wanted to act," Vanessa explained, "But we didn't have the tools or the police support."

That's when they reached out to Emma

Rigby, who has been running a similar scheme in Enfield for the last four years and claims robberies have reduced by nearly half.

Emma said: "After one particularly bad week when nineteen boys were mugged in the same month, we decided to start these patrols to increase the eyes and ears on the streets.

"Within a year of launching the patrols robberies fell by 48 per cent.

"These parents in Dulwich reached out to me and I decided to do a pilot scheme here until Christmas to see if it makes a difference in the area."

The idea is that parents and community members patrol the areas that are known as 'mugging hotspots' from the hours of

3:30pm and 5pm when most children are out. "We just speak to people and if we see anyone get approached we're on alert and we make ourselves known to them.

"Most of the time it works just to go over and say hello and be visible. If anything ever gets out of hand we just contact the police."

On their first patrol, Emma demonstrated this - introducing herself and a parent as the new community patrol to everyone who passed by. She stopped one schoolboy and asked if he'd ever been mugged, to which he casually replied: "No, but all of my friends have."

The group is partnered with the Met Police and will choose which areas to monitor based on where they deem as 'hotspots' for crime. Emma hopes to take the scheme London-wide in the near future.

Dr Allen added, "I hope by doing these patrols we're going to raise awareness and hopefully reduce the number of

muggings that happen on the street, like they have in Enfield."

As well as keeping the young people safe, he said it's good for fostering community spirit as well, commenting: "You get to meet people and it's good for your well-being."

Vanessa said: "We're here to be positive rather than vigilantes."

For the first patrol, six willing parents were present but Emma is hopeful and will continue to spread the word. "Fortyfive people have already signed up - you don't have to be a parent to volunteer."

They said that whilst doing a patrol every day after school is not realistic for working parents, they hope that if enough people sign up they will only have to go out once a month.

But Josh admitted he took some convincing at first. "I was like 'Are you serious?' The first thing I thought was 'What are we going to do with the kids?'"

At the time their three children were all under five, so they said it was hard to leave them - but Josh added that it was 'necessary.'

"Before the show, we had neglected each other a bit. When we got together we had the kids straightaway, but then the pandemic happened - so at the time we needed to reconnect.

"And this definitely brought everything back. It was like therapy."

The show is catered for people with busy lives, Kamara continued: "We filmed over eight months but we would go away for a week and then come back. So we could be with the kids and work in between."

So in true 007 fashion, this meant they had to keep their mission secret for nearly a year.

"The family just knew we were going away - they didn't know anything else," said Kamara.

Contestants in the series are required to take part in a range of daring tasks - the trailer itself is enough to make anyone's heart drop.

In regards to physical preparation, Josh said: "We had no idea where we'd be going or what we'd be doing. We tried to go to the gym every day - I was reading books on mindset trying to mentally prepare as well."

Josh said he has a 'massive fear' of heights - something that was always certain to come up in a Bond adventure. "It's still there but it's managed. I had to face it."

For anyone, the million-pound prize is a life-changing amount: "For us, it was just for our children," Josh revealed. "So we just want the basics - a house, a future for them.

It's a life-changing amount for anyone from our backgrounds.

Kamara said: "Financial freedom is a dream. We are trying to better our lives.

That was our aim in doing this show."

Josh jokingly added: "But I am getting a Range Rover - if we win and she lets me."

Another pair also from south London are brothers James and Joey, who live in Tooting. Joey trained as an electrician before completing The Knowledge in his twenties becoming a black cab driver.

He has since returned to the trade and runs his own electrician business. James describes himself as a “copywriter by day and musician by night".

Peckham couple are up to win £1million on new Bond-themed Prime reality series A Peckham couple, who grew up in poverty, could become millionaires on a brand new adventure series on Amazon Prime.

From the producers of James Bond, 007: Road To A Million follows nine duos as they take part in challenges to each hoping to go home with £1,000,000.

Narrated by Brian Cox as “The Controller” - there are ten questions hidden around the world for each pair. To reach these questions, the pairs face Bond-inspired challenges, which push their physical strength and mental reserves to the limit.

Each question is worth an increasing amount of money, and if answered correctly, they bank the cash and continue to the next question. If they get it wrong, their journey is over.

We spoke to two of the contestants in the upcoming adventure series - Josh Ali and Kamara Davis, who live in Peckham.

Josh, 42, grew up in Walworth and Kamara, 30, in Brixton. The pair said they both grew up in very working-class households and life was 'tough.'

"I grew up on the Aylesbury Estate," Josh explained, "and it was hard. Living on the largest council estate in Europe at the time, we were exposed to so much. Crime, drug abuse - all sorts."

Brothers James and Joey from Tooting required her to grow up fast. "I lived in Brixton with just me and my mum so that was a struggle. I left home around sixteen and was living in hostels around the area.

"Being from Brixton it was all about working hard not to become a statistic."

Both in youth work, they met at a work event in Croydon. Their love of travel was what first connected them - so it's not a surprise they would end up on a show like this.

By Herbie Russell poLice investiGatinG the disappearance of Justin henry have released photos of the jewellery he was wearing when he went missing.

It’s been over three weeks since the 34-year-old father was last seen in person at his partner’s address in Brixton, on Sunday, October 15.

Detectives hope somebody will recognise the “distinctive” items and provide information that helps them locate Justin. The items include a Rolex watch, three Cartier bracelets and a diamond ring.

He was last seen on CCTV buying food

at a McDonald's drive-thru restaurant on London Road, Croydon, at around 9.50pm on October 15.

What began as a missing persons investigation has since become a murder investigation. The Met said there was an "absence of any proof that Justin is alive”.

Justin’s mother Helen Henry said: “Our family are broken and we cannot begin to heal until we get closure. I, my family, and the community are all devastated and we desperately want to find Justin.

I am asking anyone who can help us to end our agony.

“Justin’s son is only 11-years-old, he wants to know what has happened to his daddy and I am afraid that unless

someone comes forward, he will never find out."

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Webb, of the Met's Specialist Crime Command, said: “Finding this jewellery could be a vital step in finding out what has happened to Justin.

“You may have seen someone wearing the jewellery or heard them talking about it. However if you have found [out] about these items, call us, and

tell us what you saw or heard. It is possible that you are in possession of the jewellery and had no idea of its significance.”

Justin, who has links to the SE23 area, which includes Forest Hill and Honor Oak, was first reported missing to police on Monday, October 16.

His family say they have not seen or heard from him and that his disappearance is totally out of character.

Police believe that, after visiting McDonald’s, Justin drove to nearby Waddon New Road in Croydon where his car, a silver Mercedes E Class, remained for roughly two-and-a-half hours.

His car was later found on Monday, October 16, on Kingswood Drive, Dulwich, near the Kingswood Estate.

Having viewed the CCTV footage, police said Justin’s family state that it was not him. ` On Wednesday, October 18, a 27-yearold woman was arrested in connection with the investigation on suspicion of kidnapping. She was bailed pending further enquiries to a date in midJanuary 2024.

Later, two more men, aged 29 and 28 would be charged in connection with the investigation.

Detectives still desperately need more information about Justin’s disappearance and the days leading up to him going missing.

By Robert Firth Local Democracy Reporter South London residents are bitterly divided over a council’s £450,000 traffic scheme that came into place last week.

Since last Monday, October 23, drivers in Streatham have faced restrictions on turning down a number of side roads in the area as part of Lambeth Council’s Streatham Wells Low Traffic Neighbourhood [LTN].

Streets affected by the new rules include: Leigham Avenue, Culverhouse Gardens, Conifer Gardens, Valley Road and Gleneldon Road. Labour-run Lambeth says the LTN, which will be initially in place for 12 to 18 months, aims to improve road safety and reduce pollution from motor vehicles.

Some residents agree with the council, saying the restrictions have made the side streets covered by the LTN much safer to cycle through.

But other residents and commuters say the restrictions have pushed traffic onto main roads surrounding the LTN, like Streatham High Road and Streatham Common North, causing gridlock at rush hour and doubling their journey times.

Michael Walton, 49, a music teacher who has been teaching lessons to pupils

in Streatham for 20 years, blamed the LTN for causing bad traffic on Streatham High Road during rush hour, which he said was making it hard for him to arrive at kids’ houses on time.

Mr Walton, a Labour Party member, said: “I teach young children who go to bed between 7pm and 7:30pm. I’m restricted when they’re available.

"It [the LTN] has doubled the time it takes me to get from one house to another. It has doubled the cost in petrol.

“If you don’t like traffic go live in the country. We live in one of the biggest metropolises in the world and they want to make it like a country garden.”

Leroy Paull-Hartry, who owns a F45 fitness centre on Streatham High Street, said customers were missing classes because of the traffic on the street in the last few days.

He said: “People arriving from Balham and Herne Hill aren’t able to get across in time because of the traffic.

We’re getting four to five people a day cancelling. People are going to end up cancelling memberships.

“The roads I used to take in the LTN there was hardly any cars going through them. I feel terrible for these schools on the main road that now have these emissions pummelling through. This is not saving the planet. It’s doing the

opposite.”

Mr Paull-Harty, a dad who has run the gym for four years, added that he wouldn’t have opened in Streatham if he knew the traffic restrictions were going to be introduced.

But Streatham resident Rufus Duits, 45, a keen cyclist, said the new traffic restrictions had made the roads covered by the LTN safer than ever.

He said that for the first time ever he felt comfortable letting his primary school-aged kids cycle on roads in the LTN. The dad-of-two, who uses a cargo bike to get around with his kids, said: “Valley Road has been one of the most aggressive roads in London. People drove too fast because of the hill.

"It’s a 1000 per cent improvement.

I would be happy for my kids to cycle down there. It’s residents only [now] and people aren’t going to be speeding down the hill.”

Mr Duits added that even if traffic was slightly worse on some roads around the LTN, he felt these roads had already been busy before, and it was a reasonable trade off for making cycling around Streatham safer overall.

Alex Yedigaroff, 39, who lives on one of the streets with new traffic restrictions, agreed that notwithstanding teething problems the LTN had made it safe for

his kids to cycle in the area for the first time ever.

Speaking on Wednesday, October 25, he said: “The first couple of days it was pretty chaotic. There were a lot of drivers who were confused doing u-turns. But today it was like waking up on Christmas day.

“I’ve been on a bike ride with my kids which is something we would never have done. It’s truly transformational.

It’s an extremely dramatic reduction [in vehicles].”

A number of motorists appeared to still be unaware of the new restrictions.

Paul Lovell, 49, a taxi driver, said he saw 17 cars enter a restricted road in less than an hour last Wednesday week, three days into the new LTN. One person the Local Democracy Reporting Service [LDRS] spoke to said they had put up makeshift ‘road closed’ signs on Valley Road in an attempt to alert motorists of the new restrictions.

Another local resident said Google Maps had only updated its routes on Thursday, October 26, four days into the LTN. Thames Water works on Leigham Court Road near the junction with Streatham High Road on Monday and Tuesday, October 23 and 24, added to confusion on the first two days of the new restrictions coming into place.

Councillor Donna Harris, leader of the council’s Liberal Democrat opposition, has called on Lambeth’s Labour leadership to waive any fines issued to motorists during the first two days of the LTN’s operation.

Cllr Harris, member for Streatham Hill West and Thornton, said: “It would be incredibly unfair to punish residents and non-residents who have been caught up in the chaos and confusion over the last two days by issuing penalty charge notices to them.”

Many residents and commuters the LDRS spoke to said they believed the true impact of the restrictions would only be known when schools reopened from half-term and traffic levels during rush hour in the area return to normal.

Neil Salt, vice chair of Streatham Action, a local community group, said Lambeth Council should have shared data on the impact on pollution and traffic of another nearby LTN in Streatham Hill, before it considered trialling a second LTN in the area in Streatham Wells.

A Lambeth Council spokesperson said: “The Streatham Wells LTN will be in place for between 12 to 18 months to allow Lambeth Council to collect feedback, monitor traffic and air quality levels.

"All the signage is out, and being monitored and updated as and when needed to make sure it’s all working correctly. Additionally large electronic boards with signage have been put out at all approaches roads to the LTN to raise awareness.

herNe hill 'drug eCoNomy' fuelled by shoPlifters who steal 'with imPuNity' warNs loCal CouNCillor

shopLiFteRs aRe thieving from herne hill supermarkets “with impunity”, fuelling the leafy neighbourhood’s thriving “drug economy”, a local councillor has warned.

Local councillor Jim Dickson has urged Tesco and Sainsbury’s to do more to help police prosecute perpetrators to address the area’s “deterioration of safety”.

A local shoplifter, who the News witnessed stealing detergent bottles, claimed she stole from the Tesco on Herne Hill “five times a day” to support her drug addiction.

Tesco and Sainsbury's have both said they take the security of its stores and staff very seriously and that they already liaise with police on shoplifting.

But Herne Hill and Loughborough junction councillor Jim Dickson said major retailers should do more to help police.

In letters sent to the CEOs of Tesco and Sainsbury’s, he claimed local police often “requested co-operation” from local stores only to be told it’s not company policy to support prosecution for shoplifting.

He urged the supermarkets to help police by providing CCTV footage and witness statements when necessary.

On arriving at the Herne Hill Tesco Express we caught up with a shoplifter who’d just run out of the store with a bag full of liquid detergent bottles.

Wishing to remain anonymous, she said: “I wouldn’t go into little independent shops. It’s better I do this than rob someone’s house.

“They know me in there so I have to be quick. I do it about five times a day. That one gets slaughtered. There’s loads of people going in there.”

Tesco says it takes the security of its stores and colleagues seriously and that staff at the Herne Hill store always liaises with the police on issues impacting the store.

Asked about the shoplifting problem, Tesco store manager Renata Gasova said: “It’s really bad. If you open the CCTV anytime you’ll see someone always taking something.”

But she also said that staff always report incidents to the police and on the company’s internal system.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s,

whose store on Herne Hill has also been cited as a shoplifting hotspot, said: “The safety of our colleagues and customers continues to be our highest priority. We’re one of the retailers supporting Project Pegasus to create more efficient ways of tackling organised crime by working together with the police and other retailers."

“We were the first retailer to introduce colleague worn cameras in 2018 to protect our team. Colleagues now wear cameras in every Sainsbury’s store and footage can be uploaded direct to a police portal.”

In a letter written to the Home Secretary in September, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) indicated that police weren’t always following up on thefts even when they were reported.

The BRC wrote: “For one major retailer, the police's own data shows that they failed to respond to 73% of serious retail crimes that were reported.”

The letter also said that in 2021/22 retailers lost £953m to shoplifting and spent £715m on crime prevention measures.

The BRC also reported a steep rise in violence against shop workers and urged the government to make ‘assaulting a retail worker’ a statutory offence.

The Met Police was approached for comment.

The coats will be distributed to local charities and community groups supporting homeless people, refugees, older people and those fleeing domestic violence.

Dulwich Hamlet is accepting coats

for men, women, children and babies, which people can drop off at the main reception.

When people make contact with charities to accept their coats, they are also given the opportunity to engage with long-term support for other issues they may be facing.

DisaBLeD tRain users have rejoiced after the news that ticket offices at southwark’s national rail stations will remain open.

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) had floated plans to shut 1,000 offices nationally to “modernise” the service despite fears vulnerable people would be adversely affected.

But Transport Secretary Mark Harper said train operators had been asked to drop the proposals saying they “do not meet the high thresholds set by ministers”.

In Southwark, local politicians from across the political divide had united in opposition to the plans, which would have closed offices at ten stations.

Canada Water resident Dennis Mitchell, 64, who suffers from mental health problems that affect his ability to read, said he was “very pleased”.

Of the campaigners, he said: “They couldn’t have done better. [Without them] we wouldn’t have got it.”

He said that using machines instead of manned ticket offices would have been very difficult.

“It will save me getting flustered and everything. I’m well pleased with the result.”

The RDG had said that only 12 per cent of tickets sold the previous year had been done so from ticket offices.

Their proposals would have seen the loss of ticket offices at Denmark Hill, East Dulwich, Elephant and Castle, North Dulwich, Nunhead, Peckham Rye, Queen’s Road, South Bermondsey, Sydenham Hill and West Dulwich stations.

Only the London Bridge ticket office would have remained open.

It had said it would incense the presence of roving platform staff to limit the negative impact on customers.

But passenger watchdogs Transport Focus and London Travelwatch, and disability charity Scope all expressed concerns about its impact on the elderly and disabled people.

Labour’s Peckham Rye councillor Chloe Tomlinson, who campaigned against the closure, shared those fears.

Reacting to the u-turn, she said: “This is a huge win for everyone who cares about high quality, accessible public transport.

“Credit goes to all the trade unionists, disability rights groups, and members of the public who campaigned to save our ticket offices, in Rye Lane and beyond.

“I am delighted the Rye Lane ticket

Labour councillors and protestors outside Peckham Rye Station office will now remain open.”

Cllr Rachel Bentley, deputy leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats, said: “The government’s decision to keep ticket offices open is a rare bit of good

news. The reckless plan to close most ticket offices would have rendered stations inaccessible to those with greater needs.”

RDG chief executive Jacqueline Starr

said: “While these plans won’t now be taken forward, we will continue to look at other ways to improve passenger experience while delivering value for the taxpayer.”

Local Democracy Reporter Bromley Council has revealed plans to renovate two of the borough’s leisure centres in a £27 million scheme.

It has moved forward with proposals to improve facilities at the West Wickham and the Walnuts leisure centres.

The council said in a statement on November 1 that the works would include upgrades to the swimming pools in both centres, including drowning detection technology and new pool roofs.

Council documents said new accessible toilets, cafés and changing facilities are also envisioned for both centres, along with the gym spaces being expanded.

A new soft play zone is planned for the West Wickham Centre, which council officers said was in a worse condition than the Walnuts Leisure Centre in Orpington.

The proposed improvements to both centres were developed following a survey of residents which received 6,135 responses.

The plans were discussed at an executive meeting for Bromley Council on October 18.

Council documents said the initial £27.1 million budget for the project may be exceeded given the more detailed lists of renovations each centre requires.

Conservative Councillor Nicholas Bennett said at the meeting that he was particularly looking forward to the renovations for the West Wickham Leisure Centre, but asked whether the pool would be appropriate for competitions following the works given its unusual 33-metre length.

Bromley Council reveals £27million renovations for two leisure centres

An officer said at the meeting: “At West Wickham, we are hoping to keep both the length and the depth pool.

"We have identified preliminary funding for one boom between the two centres… The swimming club at West Wickham is against having a boom because they see it as a loss of pool space but the swimming club at the Walnuts would prefer to have a boom.”

Officers cited the leisure centres as two of the borough’s most used facilities in their report, with over 20,000 visits a month.

They said both centres were at the end of their natural design life, having been built in the late 1960s.

The council has appointed Alliance Leisure Services to carry out the works.

The plans for the project are expected to be finalised in 2024 for works to begin next year and be completed in 2026.

The council said in a statement that one of the two pools would be kept open throughout this period to maintain swimming access to the public.

Jessica and other residents believe Veolia workers may have overreached in their duties.

Jessica, in particular, was shocked about how someone wouldn’t know that Halloween lands on October 31. She said: “I think the sad thing is that it was quite deliberate.

"It’s not like any of the pumpkins were in the bin, they were all displayed at the front of the houses or on the porch. Ours were placed on our bin store which is set behind the road, so they must have leaned in to get them.

"If you weren’t sure on the date, wouldn’t you ask your colleague if Halloween had passed.”

However, Jessica and Georgia were overprepared for the festivities and told the LDRS that they will not let this dampen their spirit. She said: “Luckily we did go a little over the top with our decorations so I think we’ll stick to what we’ve got at the moment.”

When approached for comment a Veolia spokesperson said: “We regret that a member of our food waste collection crew incorrectly removed pumpkins from households.

"The operative has been informed of his mistake and briefed to ensure this does not happen again. We pride ourselves on working with the community in Merton and would like to apologise for this incident.”

A Merton council spokesperson said: “We’re very sorry to hear about this and hope this mistake by one of our contractor’s operatives did not spoil Halloween for any of our residents.

"Veolia has assured us they have dealt with the matter to ensure this does not happen again.”

Residents shocked as bin men take pumpkins a day early

By Harrison Galliven Residents of Rayne’s Park woke in the morning to discover their pumpkins had been taken from their front doors and porches on the day of Halloween.

Residents in the Apostle roads area near the high street believe their pumpkins were taken by bin men on the weekly collection round.

Paul Kohler, Merton resident and Lib Dem councillor for Wimbledon Town and Dundonald Ward told the local democracy reporting service (LDRS): “Parents have been complaining about them taking the pumpkins off someone’s doorstep and front wall.

"It’s just the lack of thought of course that sums up Merton council. It’s a case of them not getting the right instructions and not using a bit of imagination. This happened on Halloween of all days.”

bleed CoNtrol kits are iNstalled at millwall fC by youNg faN aNd his dad eXCLuSive

By Isabel Ramirez two LiFesavinG bleed control cabinets have been installed at millwall Fc by a man on a mission to get them everywhere after watching his dad bleed to death as a child.

Matt Lane, a property manager from Dartford, visited the ground last Saturday, November 4, with his son, eight-year-old Millwall fan, Teddy, to install the kits.

"Coincidentally, it was the same day Teddy was the Millwall mascot," said the proud dad, "so we were able to do it before the game."

They installed one cabinet at the Lewisham Lions Centre, one of the hubs for Millwall Community Trust and another inside the ground.

It is all part of Matt's campaign to get lifesaving equipment everywhere following a personal tragedy.

Now 44, Matt told us he was just twelve years old when his dad was attacked at their home in Dartford thirty years ago.

"I remember I opened the door to a group of men," he told us, "They were stood there with a samurai sword, an axe and other weapons.

He tried to stab me at first but Dad pushed me out of the way. They then dragged him out of the house and started stabbing him."

He later found out that this was a result of an argument between neighbours that had nothing to do with his dad - but he was targeted because they thought he might have seen or heard the altercation.

Matt said they called the ambulance and police straightaway - but said he remembers the police taking a long time to arrive. "The paramedics arrived first but they couldn't enter the scene without the police due to the nature of the attack."

"I essentially watched him bleed to death for 45 minutes - whilst the ambulance was sat 100 metres away," he recalled. "By the time they got there, my dad had 28 stab wounds."

His dad tragically died later on in hospital aged 35.

Matt said as a child he didn't look into it - but more recently was inspired to do something when he came across his dad's post-mortem papers.

"I wanted to see how I could go about helping someone in the future - so I came across these kits and started buying them from this website and giving them out to places I thought could benefit from having them."

Inside the kit - provided by Mere Supplies Ltd - is a selection of medical supplies to treat critical bleeding, which can be fatal in as little as three to five minutes. The kit can buy time before someone is able to get medical help.

"Even though this mission is inspired by my dad who was stabbed - these kits can be used for anything so I don't call them 'stab kits'. Someone might fall over, or have a car accident for instance."

So far he's installed about ten in his area and two in London. But he thought to reach out to Millwall Football Club after thinking stadiums would be a good place to have this sort of kit.

Two Millwall players, Zian Flemming and George Saville joined them on the day of the unveiling of the cabinets - which are weatherproof and have a few kits inside.

When somebody dials 999 to report an incident, control staff direct the caller to the nearest kit and tell them, step-by-step, how to treat the victim.

Matt who also works as a fight inspector for UFC and Misfits Boxing, said he was recently able to raise some money after getting influencers such as Logan Paul, KSI,

and Tommy Fury to sign a glove which he auctioned off for £1000. "That paid for these cabinets - which cost around £400 each."

His aim is to encourage companies to pay for them and keep raising money himself for those who can't afford one themselves.

"My plan is to get TfL involved and get them on buses and trains - that way if there's an incident people know that the next bus will have one on."

He added that he wants to get one in Croydon on the road where a girl was killed recently.

Sean Daly, CEO of Millwall Community Trust, said agreeing to install the lifesaving equipment was 'a no-brainer.'

"We work very closely with the police and unfortunately there are a lot of incidents that happen that could benefit from something like this. But it's not just for crime, it could be used for accidents as well.

"So installing it was a no-brainer for us.

The good thing about it being on the outside of the building is that it's open to the whole of the public."

He added that they have already taken some steps to provide access to lifesaving equipment before now: "We had a defibrillator installed at Lewisham Lions about three years ago and it's surprising how many times it's been used already by the public."

There is now one cabinet at the Lewisham Lions Centre and one at the Millwall FC ground. Elsewhere in Southwark, local campaigner Lisa Pearson has been trying to get bleed control cabinets installed since last year as a response to young people losing their lives to stabbings. So far, she has successfully managed to get three installed in the borough - in Peckham Rye Park, on Peckham High Street and East Dulwich Road.

A disused Victorian shopping centre in Peckham is set to be converted into a nightclub that stays open until 6am.

The Jones & Higgins department store on Rye Lane, once home to the Peckham Palais club, would become a nightclub, live music and bar under the plans.

First opened in 1867, the stunning Neo-Renaissance building, renowned for its distinctive VenetianRenaissance clocktower, has been described as “London’s most endangered building”.

Under the plans, submitted earlier this month, the first, second and third floors would all be used for nightlife.

A management plan has suggested the venue could stay open till 6am on Fridays and Saturdays, 5am on Sundays, and 11pm Monday to Thursday.

It is hoped the new venue would improve what an architectural firm described as a “lack of” live music venues in the area.

The building, which isn't listed despite local campaigners’ efforts to get it recognised by Historic England, would require extensive repairs.

It was so popular that Victorian consumers are said to have considered it South London’s answer to Oxford Street.

Neighbours have been notified about the planning application, and have until November 14 to share their views on it.

Southwark Council's planning committee would have to approve the plans before any conversion gets underway.

Brain cancer patient who had “zero symptoms” walks the fashion runway

A YOUNG man with terminal brain cancer has taken part in an inspirational fashion show and is raising money to thank the teams who are supporting him.

Mason Morgan, 28, was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour in September 2022.

Despite ongoing treatment, Mason took his place on the catwalk in the fashion show at Guy’s Hospital. Now in its sixth year, the annual event celebrates cancer survivors and the teams at Guy’s and St Thomas’ who have treated them.

Mason was due to move to Australia last October before his shock diagnosis.

He said: “I had zero symptoms. That weekend I was packing and sorting stuff out for Australia. I vividly remember picking up a white T-shirt and blacking out for 15-30 seconds and my housemate being in my room and asking me questions.

“After that I rang NHS 111, they told me to go to King’s College Hospital and I didn’t leave there for 4 weeks.”

Mason had a high-grade (aggressive) brain tumour and had surgery at King’s College Hospital to try and remove it.

Unfortunately, the nature of the tumour meant complete removal wasn’t possible, although surgeons removed as much as it was safe to.

Following his recovery from surgery, Mason had 6 weeks of radiotherapy at the Cancer Centre at Guy’s where he also has chemotherapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy. He juggles these appointments with his job in marketing

for a finance company at nearby London Bridge.

Mason, said: “It’s a challenge every day. Making something to eat is a challenge because I can’t use my right side as well as I used to. You have to figure out certain ways around it. It’s part of me and you have to deal with whatever cards you are dealt.”

Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40.

More than 5,300 people lose their lives to a brain tumour each year and they reduce life expectancy by 27 years on average – the highest of any cancer.

Just 12% of adults survive for 5 years after diagnosis.

Mason took part in the fashion show with 20 other patients who have recently finished or are still undergoing cancer treatment. The event is part of Cancer Survivors’Day and is supported

by Guy’s Cancer Charity. As well as a fashion show, it also included live music, seminars and exhibits.

He said: “I wanted to do it to give back for all the care, assistance and support I’ve received. I was more excited than worried or nervous. My housemates and some of my nurses were there to support me.”

Ellie Kostick, neurology clinical nurse specialist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “Mason has been amazing throughout his treatment.

Despite a few set-backs he has just cracked on, even offering to support others going through a similar thing.

It was great to watch Mason up there on the catwalk. I hope he heard us all cheering loudly!”

Mason is raising money for Guy’s Cancer Charity and Macmillan Cancer Support. He has set himself a target of £15,000 and hopes to complete a range of challenges including the Vitality London 10K, Royal Parks Half Marathon and the London Marathon.

New video for families about play service at Evelina London Hospital A NEW film has launched to help children and families attending Evelina London Children’s Hospital get a better understanding of the power of play, and discover how play specialists can help them during their visit.

The hospital’s team of play specialists are specially trained to provide play for sick children and young people. They make a difference in a number of ways, including helping children to gain a better

understanding of medical procedures and treatment, using distraction and therapeutic intervention to help a child cope with painful and invasive procedures and encouraging recovery and development by providing fun activities.

Sue Pruden, play service manager, at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, said: “Coming to hospital can be very daunting, so through this video we wanted to help remove some of the fear in advance and show children and young people what can be familiar

and fun in hospital.

“We’ve included information about the ways we can help, how families can access our support and shown what our uniforms look like so children and young people look out for us and join in our activities during their hospital stay.

While his business has weathered the storm, Gary Beckett feels Coulsdon has become quieter since ULEZ

By Harrison Galliven Local Democracy Reporter For most people, a mention of Croydon conjures up images of a busy high-rise metropolitan area often beset by noise and crime. However, for much of the borough the opposite is very much the case.

Croydon’s southern half differs to its north in that it is greener and richer. This area also marks some of the farthest reaches of the Greater London boundary, and it’s here that you will find Coulsdon and Old Coulsdon.

Coulsdon and its smaller neighbour to the south, Old Coulsdon, sit just over four miles south of Croydon town centre.

Historically a part of Surrey, they are served by the Brighton mainline and are home to a number of wellperforming schools and two beautiful green spaces in Farthing Downs and Happy Valley.

While being a London borough has its benefits, many Coulsdon residents were recently up in arms about the

Coulsdon and Old Coulsdon with it's village-type atmosphere is just four miles south of Croydon, residents say they love the transport links but complain that ULEZ has hurt the area controversial ULEZ plan and how it would affect their border town.

On a wet and windswept Wednesday, the local democracy reporting service (LDRS) spoke to long-time Coulsdon residents Andy and Anne Dalby about the ULEZ issue.

Andy told the LDRS: “ULEZ is difficult for people who can’t afford so much. This high street is covered

by ULEZ, but further up the road, you leave the zone.

"Half the town is covered by it, it’s down the road in Purley. It seems

quite silly, but I guess they have to stop it somewhere.”

Anne, a school teacher who has taught children in many of the local schools, said: “I know of families of working-class families of children who I’ve taught who have to change their route to school just so they avoid the ULEZ zone.”

Local businessman Gary Beckett, who has run the Advanced Print shop on Brighton Road for 33 years also acknowledged the changes brought

by ULEZ.

Inside his shop, Gary told the LDRS: “ULEZ and parking are the two biggest issues at the moment. There are too many people parking here all day using the hour ticket, and they keep feeding the metres and taking up space.

"There’s also the ULEZ problem but that’s the same everywhere. We have gotten quieter since ULEZ came about but I don’t know if many of our customers had to scrap their vehicles.

"It didn’t affect us too much because we mainly deal with businesses that use electric vehicles, however, it has seemed to have made everything quieter and less buoyant.”

Despite this, Coulsdon residents seem content with the standard of public transport in the area.

While South London is famously short of underground stations, Coulsdon is lucky to be served by two busy train stations on the Brighton mainline.

Local resident and chair of the East Coulsdon Residents Association Charles King said: “Transport is good, on the trains you can get to central London in half an hour, and it’s in the

travel card zone.

"I will often say I can turn left out of my house and be in central London in half an hour and I can turn right and be in the country in ten minutes."

Anne, who often uses public transport, agreed, saying: “Coulsdon is great for pensioners like us because we’re still in the London area, which means we get to use our freedom pass. This means I can choose how I travel.

"When I go up to London with my sister, on the other hand, we have to go everywhere on the buses.”

In recent years, South Croydon has become a hotspot for developers with its access to green space and good schooling. This has meant that many new businesses and housing units have shot up to meet the growing demand.

Andy told the LRDS: “Of course, it’s changed over the years, there’s a busy ALDI where the Red Lion Coaching Inn used to be.

"The main change came when they built the bypass, before that there was traffic everywhere.”

By Noah Vickers Local Democracy Reporter Sadiq Khan has said that new data on the Ulez expansion shows that the scheme is working “ahead of schedule” in removing polluting vehicles from London’s streets.

Coulsdon sits in a valley at the start of the North Downs lot of traffic, but not nearly as much as there used to be. It is still a nice place to live as you’re close to open country as well as the motorway.

"The high streets are good, but it’s just full of nail bars and hairdressers.

Shops come and go very quickly around here. They’re not empty for long. We have all the shops that we need.”

King praised the area’s resilience and spoke of how it has bucked the trend by having a thriving high street.

He said: “In some ways, Coulsdon hasn’t changed at all, in other ways it has changed completely.

"Obviously, the shops in the town centre are different, but we still have quite a lot of nice independent shops.

We also have quite a number of nice restaurants here now as well.

"We are a lot better than many other district centres in that we have very few empty shops.”

As well as serving as the chair of the local residents’ association, King is also an avid local historian. He told the LDRS: “In Coulsdon, we have a number of sites of special scientific importance along with Saxon and

Roman burial grounds.

"In fact, the name Coulsdon originates from a guy called Cuthred who was a Saxon warrior in the year 600 AD.” Despite his love for his hometown, King still believes the area is not perfect and does need some improvements. He told the LDRS: “There’s not much that needs to be improved, but the council really needs to get back to improving the parks.

"We have quite a lot of amenities for younger children, but we need more for 11-16-year-olds.

"We need more youth clubs and better football pitches as well.

"If you’d asked me ten years ago, I would have said there’s not enough flats, there are too many big houses.

Now we have loads of flats, but we need more two to three-bedroom houses that younger people can afford, and older people can downsize in.”

Two miles uphill to the south of the town lies the village of Old Coulsdon.

This village of around 10,000 is Greater London’s southernmost

settlement and has a distinctly more rural feel to its larger neighbour.

The village is largely affluent and is home to larger semi-detached houses in the mock Tudor style.

Despite sharing a name, some Coulsdon residents see themselves as different from their leafier neighbours.

Gary Beckett is one of those people.

He told the LDRS: “Old Coulsdon are much more snooty than us, they don’t like Coulsdon. They go to Caterham up the hill to do their shopping.”

While Old Coulsdon does appear to show the hallmarks of a quaint village, including a verdant common and duck pond, it has more variety than meets the eye.

The Tollers estate features a number of private and councilowned properties that sit against the backdrop of nearby Happy Valley.

A local resident who was walking across the ancient Coulsdon Common during a break from the rain put it best when she told the LDRS: “I like it round here, it’s got all the perks of being in London but also has such a villagey feel.”

Figures released this week show that the number of non-compliant vehicles seen driving in London on an average day has decreased by 77,000 compared to June 2023, which the Mayor said was a greater increase than had been expected at this stage by Transport for London (TfL).

The Ultra low emission zone (Ulez) – which charges older, more polluting vehicles a daily £12.50 fee to be driven – previously only covered the area within the North and South Circular roads. It was expanded by Mr Khan to cover the whole of Greater London on August 29.

Speaking on Tuesday, October 31, the Mayor said: “TfL have set out what they estimated to happen by the end of the year, and as far as vehicles and cars are concerned, they’re ahead of schedule – clearly there’s some time to go until the end of the year.

“In relation to vans, some will have applied to retrofit [them], some will have applied for exemptions because they’re waiting for their new electric vehicle to arrive, but I think the early results show [that] not only is the Ulez working, but the expansion is working as well.”

The new statistics reveal that, by the end of September, average compliance rates across London had increased to 95.3 per cent – up from 91.6 per cent in June.

This was higher for cars – 96.4 per cent of which are now not liable for the Ulez levy – but lower for vans at 86.2 per cent, though this was up from 80.2 per cent in June.

TfL says the compliance rate for cars in outer London is now virtually on a par with that in inner London, where 96.9 per cent meet the rules.

The Mayor admitted however that it would take a year to get firm data on the impact the expansion has had in reducing air pollution.

“We’ve got record numbers of air quality monitors across our city,” he said.

“I think there are a number of reasons that TfL and others have said in relation to the importance of having data over a longer period.

“Because of seasonal adjustments,

because of weather, because things change on a day to day basis, relying on a day or a week or a month isn’t really enough. You’re comparing one month versus another month, in different seasons.

“What the advice and the experience from central London and inner London is, [is that after] one month you publish compliance and non-compliance [levels], basically speaking. [After] six months you can do preliminary figures – they are preliminary in relation to air quality. [At] 12 months are the final figures in relation to air quality.”

The Mayor said he had been “really pleased” by the number of applications made to City Hall’s £160m scrappage scheme – and he hinted that it could have more funding added to it, having previously been expanded from £110m.

The scheme enables Londoners with non-compliant vehicles to apply for grants, which can for example be put towards the cost of replacing them with cleaner, compliant models.

Grants of £2,000 are available for cars and £1,000 for motorbikes, with larger amounts available for vans and minibuses.

Just under £40m of the scrappage fund remains unclaimed.

Mr Khan said: “I’ve been really pleased by the take-up of the scrappage scheme – almost 40,000 vehicles now scrapped because of the scheme we’ve got for outer London.

"The figure for central and inner [London] was only about 15,200 vehicles being scrapped [under a previous scrappage scheme].

“The good news [is that] there’s still tens of millions of pounds left. I’d encourage those who’ve got a non-compliant vehicle to apply.

“We always keep that [the total amount of money in the scrappage scheme] under review. We did the same with central London and with inner London, and indeed with outer London – and we’ll carry on keeping this under review.”

The latest data also revealed that about 57,200 drivers a day have been paying the £12.50 levy, generating £23,595,000 for TfL by the end of September – and more than 13,000 have been sent £180 fines, generating up to a further £2.4m.

The reduction of 77,000 non-compliant petrol and diesel vehicles being driven in the capital on an average day is a drop from 170,000 down to 93,000.

Choreographer Drew McOnie has adapted an iconic Christmas story for a modern audience and brought in an expert team to help him realise his dream of giving Nutcracker a twist that brings it right into the 21st century without having to lose any of its essence.

The girl in the story is now Clive, a boy with a father who wants him to be more manly. He buys him an Action Man for Christmas but Clive relates more to the fairy atop the tree. Through dance we see how choices and sexuality are nothing to be ashamed of but can bring people together.

Six dancers pirouetted and leapt in this intimate space as they told the story that many of us know, to music that we know. There is a Sugar Plum Fairy causing the usual conflicts that having a pretty woman around brings when there are lots of men, but the battles are fought with moves that veered between ballet and modern dance with echoes of Bob Fosse,

although without the Jazz hands.

But the foundation upon which all this worked was the band playing Tchaikovsky tunes with Mercury Prize nominee Cassie Kinoshi composing the Jazzy touch that Nutcracker needed to make it cool in this pop-up club. Under the guidance of Musical Director and double bass player Rio Kai, this foursome hit all the right notes in all the right order for them and the dancers to look good.

Adventures on Will Breaker Street Hunt

I was out with half of Team King today on a Will Breaker Street Hunt to crack codes and get our hands on Uncle’s fortune that he left in his will - the perfect bonus to get out of this cost of living crisis, writes Michael Holland...

To find the fortune you and your team have to follow maps sent to your phones where answers to clues can be found in the physical surroundings, or by solving mathematical puzzles, with each answer taking you closer and closer to the money - and all against the clock.

Overseeing the Street Hunt is Tony and Annaliza, a Herne Hill couple who have devised this event that gets you out and about, getting exercise and going down streets and alleyways that lead to places you never knew were there.

Our first mission was to liaise with Eddie near Holborn. We had already sent a selfie so he could recognise us, and before long a strange-looking character sidled up beside us to ask out of the corner of his mouth, ‘Can I help you with some directions?’, which I thought was a bit obvious for someone we had been informed worked for MI6. I sussed him out straight away.

‘Yes, Eddie,’ I said. ‘We know who you are and just need for you to tell us where to go now to claim that will.’

‘I don’t know about any will’ came the unexpected reply. ‘I thought you were lost.’

‘Don’t mess about, Ed, we’re running out of time here, mate. What are you going to do to help us move forward with the mission?’

‘I have no idea what you are talking about,’ said the man who was evidently not Eddie but a good Samaritan trying to help two lost souls!

Our phones buzzed and it was the real Eddie letting us know where to head for next, and to watch out as we could be followed by other people after the dead man’s fortune. I delegated Nina as our lookout.

And so it goes on, at each rendezvous spot, there is a clue for you to find and answer a question on it, a numerical quiz that unlocks another piece of the mystery, while all the time being warned to keep our eyes peeled and trust no one.

At one point near the British Museum sirens got closer and closer until eventually ambulances and police vans screeched to a halt and blocked off both ends of a small turning. Officers leapt out and began ushering pedestrians away from the scene while the paramedics began CPR on someone on the floor outside a restaurant.

I told Nina how impressed I was with the work that had gone into this game and was promptly told by her and a large constable that this was a real emergency and we needed to vacate the area…

Will Breaker is a Street Hunt game for

all the family. The youngsters can practise their map-reading skills, their maths skills, their finding the clues skills, and can feel good when they show the grown-ups how to do it.

Of course, if you’re stuck there is help to be gleaned from Con Fidential, Eve Stropper and the numerous other agents we dealt with on the way, and you can negotiate extra time if you need it. Plus, you get graded at the end. I was quite

pleased with my Bronze until Nina’s result came through and she claimed bragging rights with a Silver!

For us, it was a good walk, a great feeling when you worked out the answers and quite exciting when you know you’ve only got so long to get somewhere, seek out a solution and move on to the next stage. But we also got to actually look at architecture more than we would if we were merely walking around Bloomsbury

and Theatreland; we discovered facts that we didn’t know, and saw places that we had never seen before, places hidden in plain sight in the middle of central London. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Perhaps it is the best fun you can have on two feet. £16.50 per person.

a dark Night iN ChariNg Cross

on what felt like the first evening of autumn, a slight chill in the air, i walked through the sloping arches on my way to charing cross theatre. i felt a sense of excitement and eagerness to watch London’s musical premiere of Rebecca, writes Bella Christy.

Based on the timeless novel by Daphne Du Maurier, Rebecca has been crafted into numerous adaptations.

Micheal Kunze and Sylvester Levay penned the original musical adaptation, and this London version is helmed by director Alejandro Bonatto and conducted by the masterful Robert Scott.

The production took a moment to grasp me, the opening scene had a vastly different tone and style to the rest of the play. However, once It had, I was hooked.

The youthful and naive heroine (played by Lauren Jones), whose name we never encounter, meets Maxim de Winter (Richard Carson) in Monte Carlo and is swept away by his charm.

A charm that perhaps grows on you? I must admit their romance didn’t entice me right away. I felt the passion in their singing voices, yet the heroine's initial awkwardness and Maxim’s bluntness did not convince me of a great love.

The production boasted three talented leads and an equally impressive ensemble. The ensemble’s spirit notably came alive after Maxim introduced his new wife to his staff at Manderley estate. Their collective energy was dynamic and invigorating, voices harmoniously complementing one another as they discussed the newcomer. The gossiping staff broke the fourth wall as they extended into the auditorium, directing their rants to those in the stalls. As I made eye contact with a member of the ensemble, I felt as though my opinion on the new Mrs de Winter was just as significant as those of the characters around me.

Mrs Danvers, housekeeper at

Manderley, instils a formidable sense of fear and power from her very first entrance. Descending the spiral staircase, spine straight, she contrasts dramatically with the sweet but cowering new wife. Dressed all in black, Mrs Danvers still mourns the late Mrs de Winter, Rebecca.

Her unwavering loyalty to Rebecca, more accurately described as unhealthy obsession, becomes increasingly apparent and reaches a peak during the number ‘Rebecca’ in which she lovingly caresses the late

Mrs de Winter’s unwashed bed robes.

Her expression takes on a hauntingly sinister quality as she reprises this number in the Act 1 finale, ushering in a new level of eeriness, as the gothic essence of the production fully emerges. This was the moment the production won me over.

Act 2 had me enraptured the entire way, building and growing from Act 1, the relationships were becoming stronger, the plot thickening and the dark nature of the production was heightening. The opening number of

the second act, ‘You’ll Always Love Her’ into ‘Rebecca (reprise)’ featuring Mrs Danvers and the new Mrs de Winter, exuded remarkable power. Their voices carried a real force, confirming the impression that the production was driven by its female characters.

History

Why are there little statues of cats dotted around Camberwell?

What did the French ever do for us? The answer; put little statues of cats around Camberwell and Brixton.

They’re easily missed, but if you take a stroll around Myatt’s Fields Park, you can see some whiskered characters peering out from the pretty Georgian houses that line the park.

These feline statues and engravings were the work of the Minets, a French Huguenot family that migrated to England in the late 17th century.

They arrived as grocers but achieved huge success and ultimately left an indelible mark on Camberwell, building a public library and church. They even donated Myatt’s Fields to the London County Council so Londoners could enjoy the green space free of charge.

Despite these grand schemes, this philanthropic family also had an eye for detail. ‘Minet’ is French for ‘kitty’ so the family decided to carve moggies into the buildings they constructed.

From Calais to Camberwell

French Huguenots were a religious group of French Protestants who followed the Calvinist tradition.

From the sixteenth to seventeenth century, roughly 200,000 Huguenots fled France to escape persecution by the French Catholic government.

50,000 are believed to have settled in England.

Among those refugees - a term first coined to describe the Huguenots - was Isaac Minet the son of a Calais grocer.

After a spell in prison, he organised for his brother to send a vessel to French coasts to smuggle him to England.

He and his mother made it past the coastguard and patrol boats around Calais and arrived on the shores of England in 1686. Continuing his father’s trade, he set up a grocers on Newport Street, in what is now Vauxhall.

Prosperous Streets

The Minets were gradually able to establish themselves in their new home country and had acquired property in Hayes by 1731.

In 1770, Hughes Minet, the grandson of Isaac, bought 118 acres in Camberwell from the Tory politician Sir Edward Knatchbull.

The low, flat terrain of Myatt’s Field struggled to attract prosperous house buyers throughout the first half of the 19th century. But when railways were built into Camberwell in the 1860s, it stimulated a demand for housing.

By 1871, under James Lewis Minet, houses on Paulet Road, Knatchbull Road, and the connecting streets, were being built.

Purrfectly Preserved

At least one house on Cormont Road has a cat engraving above the door,

accompanied with the year 1893 engraved above his head.

Calais Gate is a grand set of apartment buildings on Myatt’s Field Park’s north-western side. A pair of self-important tabbies perch on either side of the building, gazing out across the park.

Continue clockwise, and onto Calais Street, at least two of the buildings there also have cat markings. One is a venerable-looking soul, carved above a doorway. The other is a led-down tom, which looks as if it’s just been woken up.

It doesn’t seem that any more cats were constructed after the Minet’s spree in the late 19th century. But the the park’s aptly named Little Cat Cafe demonstrates that at least a few people are keen to keep the traditional alive.

The Minets’ Gifts to Camberwell

The Minets were genuine philanthropists and, some say, evidence of how conscientious Georgian landlords could bestow important facilities on London's poor.

The Gothic-style Minet Library was built in 1890. Bar a brief interruption when it was partially destroyed during the Blitz in 1940, it’s served the people of south London for over 130 years.

It’s been the home of the Lambeth Archives since 1956.

St James’s Church, Knatchbull Road, was built by the Minets in 1870 and Longfield Hall was completed in 1880.

In 1889, William Minet donated 14.5 acres, now known as Myatt’s Field Park, to the London Country Council. This compact but picturesque space, with its carefully designed path network, roundhouse and gardens, is today regarded as a sparkling example of Victorian design.

Anthony Jeffrey made his first start since the opening day of the season after missing two months through injury. Recent recruit, winger Josh Shonibare, made his debut off the bench. “[Jeffrey] is like a new signing for us. Ayuk scored another goal. I thought the two centre-backs were excellent, I thought they were outstanding,” Hayrettin said.

“Everyone worked hard but when we get in front like that we just need to be a bit

more disciplined, shall we say, without the ball. Then we can get somewhere. Good point, I’ll take the point.

“It’s four league games now we haven’t lost. It’s a cliche - and we’re nowhere near that point yet - but if you draw away and win at home you’ve got a chance. We’re slowly but surely grinding them out.”

The other transfer activity apart from Shonibare, who had been without a club since leaving Maidstone last April, was the departure of Elliott Romain.

Hayrettin said: “Josh played in the National League for Maidstone, started his professional career with Derby. It didn’t go to plan like he wanted it to at the end of last season. Talks didn’t work out as he expected. He was at Forest Green and there was a change of managers and it all didn’t go to plan for him.

After the break, Nicol went over for the third score after collecting a loose ball from the top of the line-out and dotting down by the sticks. The bonus point was secured soon after for the travelling Lancers when Vowles linked up neatly with scrum-half TJ Regan who cantered down the wing and over the opposition's try-line.

The only dent in Southwark’s armour came when the opposition shoved over from a close-quarters scrum. The hosts’ only other score was a penalty.

Otherwise the chain mail-like Lancers defence held strong throughout the game. The ever-present Nicol also kicked two penalties to punish Old Pauline’s indiscipline and extend their lead comfortably.

Lionesses tame their challengers

By John Kelly Lynn aBc’s Frankie hanratty will be representing south-east London in his first international bout this saturday.

Hanratty will be boxing against a team coming over from Spain. It will be his first fight this season.

His coach Terry Pearson said: “He has been looking very sharp in the gym as he has been in pre-season training since the beginning of September getting ready for his first three-bythree-minute round contest.”

The event is on at Napier House on Baring Road (SE12 0BH). The competition starts at 3pm.

Managers Alex Russell and Adam Rowland wanted to use their full squad for this fixture, but had to respect a Newhaven side running away with the division below after ten wins out of ten this season.

The clean sheets have all occurred since the return of Chrissie Wiggins to the club, but the consistency of the back four has been a big feature of this run. Hope Welsh and Ellie Cole returned to the side for the first time since the Fulham game in September, playing one half each at right-back. Welsh was a regular last season, but this campaign she has had to nurse a persistent injury, and her return will be carefully managed.

Youngsters Melissa Jones and Shay Bennett were awarded starts, and Chloe Burr and Ella Bailey were rested until late in the game.

Top-scorer Emma Whitter opened the scoring on 29 minutes with a typical turn on the edge of the box and a powerful finish into the opposite top corner. This was the first in a burst of three great goals, with defender Sophie Chapman’s acrobatic finish following a Shannan Drewe corner and Liv McGregor’s expert run and shot from Whitter’s through-ball.

The second half saw a second appearance of the season with the welcome return of midfielder Maisie Joyce, and she showed what the Lionesses had been missing since last season by adding two more goals. The first came from the penalty spot after Whitter had been fouled going around the goalkeeper, and the second a smart finish from Academy product Ellen Napper’s brilliant right-wing cross.

The Lionesses’ L&SERWFL Premier Division fixture at Enfield Town scheduled for the previous Wednesday was the victim of the weather. They have a full week of training going into the Women’s FA Cup first-round tie at Denham United on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 2pm.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old winger Grace Laverick sadly sustained a combined ACL and cartilage injury in the victory over Margate in the last round. Laverick has a JustGiving page to help raise the huge cost of surgery. Millwall fans have already made a good start on this.

Hodgson, 76, is showing that his standards are still as exacting as ever after almost five decades in management as he felt the Eagles gave away possession too easily against Vincent Kompany’s Clarets, who became the first team in the history of the top flight in England to lose their first six home games of the season.

Jeffrey Schlupp opened the scoring from Jordan Ayew's ball across goal in the 22nd minute and Palace sealed the points in the fourth minute of stoppagetime when Eberechi Eze found Tyrick Mitchell to beat James Trafford.

“I think we can play better than we actually did,” Hodgson said. “So when [one] calls it the ideal away performance, I thought when we did win the ball back we sometimes surrendered it a little bit more cheaply than we needed to because we have a lot of good quality players on our team.

“Normally if we get hold of the ball I would have expected a little bit more from us. I thought Burnley were good, I thought they put us under a lot of pressure. So I thought it was an outstanding defensive performance throughout.

“And I thought towards the end of the game as well, the game-management was quite good. So I'm certainly not apologising for coming away with three points.

“I'm grateful for your sense of a perfect away performance. But I hope I'm not being too harsh on myself if [I think] we

can do even better, especially on the ball, than we did.

“But, credit to Burnley, to be fair, they worked very, very hard. They got around the ball the way they could, and they didn't give us much time. So it wasn't just purely us, it was a combination of their good defending and our sometimes a little bit of profligacy with the ball at our feet."

Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is top of the Golden Glove standings with five clean sheets in eleven games.

"Look, it’s nice, but there’s a long way to go. It's great to keep clean sheets,” Johnstone said. “It gives you a real good base to go on and win the game like today. We keep going every game to win and if I pick up a clean sheet along the way, it's a bonus.

“Not every game is going to be easy but we have to see those games through.

We've got a couple of injuries ready to come back and hopefully they push us on again.”

Johnstone revealed he hadn’t seen his side’s first goal.

He said: “I was looking for [Tyrick] as an option to clip it to him and he wasn't in position. I kind of missed the goal because I was too busy telling him to get on the touchline, but it worked out well.

“We didn't have many chances and thankfully we put them away when they came. T's a great player, great lad and he deserved [the goal].

“I don't know what he was doing on the edge of that box, to be honest, at the end!

Look, he got up there and got the goal.

He put it in the bottom corner.

“It’s great news for him, brilliant. And to be fair, it just settled the game. Like I said, we were under pressure. We had 1-0 and 2-0 just killed it off right at the end.”

Millers’ time as minnows get another crack at Addicks

By John Kelly CRAY VALLEY Paper Mills manager Steve McKimm was “extremely proud” after his side’s 1-1 draw at Charlton Athletic in the first round of the FA Cup last weekend - as Addicks boss Michael Appleton said he took “full responsibility” for the shock result.

The Isthmian League South East Division side defied the four divisions and 177 places between the clubs to bring Charlton back to Badgers Sports Ground in Eltham after Lucas Ness’s own goal three minutes after half-time

cancelled out Scott Fraser’s ninthminute opener.

The visitors took 1,998 supporters - almost twice the official capacity of their home ground - to The Valley and there were jubilant scenes in the away end after the final whistle.

“I’m extremely proud,” McKimm said.

“Staff get a mention because they are an unbelievable support network and the players are the star of the show.

They are the ones who go out there and do it.

“Charlton are not far from the playoffs. They have got good players and a good manager. We knew we couldn’t come and just be expansive.

“But what I did like is, going 1-0 down, my players didn’t freeze. They looked after the ball. We weren’t a smash-and-grab team today. We played some really good football.

“Testament to my players because they ended up bringing on five of their starting or sixteen [in the match-day squad] that play week-in and week-out in League One. “I’m not going to kid anyone. We didn’t play Charlton’s first team but we played a team that is full of professionals, train every day and have the fitness and nutrition, and my boys were superb. It’s special.”

Appleton made eleven changes to the

side that had won 3-2 at Wigan Athletic in League One the previous Tuesday.

Charlton had 70 per cent possession and one of their five substitutes was top-scorer Alfie May, but the hosts couldn’t avoid one of the biggest shock results in this season’s FA Cup so far.

“I take full responsibility,” Appleton said. “I pick the team and clearly it was the wrong one [Sunday].

“Sometimes you’ve got to manage and balance the group as best as you possibly can. I certainly felt that the starting XI was more than capable of winning again. And I still do, regardless of how poor some of the performances were.

“It was a hard watch at times. I don’t want to give any excuses to the players at all. The reality is we have to be better, and in the important moments of the game we weren’t.

“Up until the [Cray Valley] goal it was okay. The disappointment was after the goal, really. There was a lot of anxiety with a few of the players in the group and they really struggled after that.”

The replay is on Tuesday, November 14. The winners will be away to League Two Gillingham in the second round.

Charlton are back in League One action this Saturday when they travel to Portsmouth.

37-year-old Joe Edwards is victorious in the race to replace Gary Rowett

By Kiro Evans JOE EDWARDS has said he is not taking the role of being Millwall's new manager "lightly" after the club officially unveiled their new head coach.

It is the 37-year-old's first senior management job after he spent time as the assistant manager at Chelsea and Everton under Frank Lampard.

Edwards replaces Gary Rowett, who left by mutual consent last month after almost four years in charge at The Den. The new head coach has been appointed alongside new assistant manager Andy Myers, who was previously at Chelsea.

Caretaker boss Adam Barrett and coach Andy Marshall will remain as part of the club's backroom staff.

Edwards told Millwall TV+: “Firstly, it’s a really proud day for me and my family.

Although I have been coaching for a long time, a lot of people will be aware that this

is my first job managing as head coach.

"Throughout the years, at various levels, you think you would like to have the opportunity to make the step up. To do it at a club like this, to be head coach of Millwall Football Club - I don't take that lightly at all. I'm really excited."

He will now take charge of Millwall and will be in the dugout for the first time on Saturday when the Lions take on Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

His first home game will come after the international break when Millwall host Coventry City on November 25.

Edwards takes over a Millwall side who sit 18th in the Championship, seven points off the relegation places and eight points off the play-off positions.

Millwall have finished eighth, eleventh, ninth and eighth in their last four seasons under Rowett.

Chairman James Berylson said: "With Joe, I'm excited. He is somebody who I think is very innovative and has some

positive ideas about the progression we can make as a club.

"It was a thorough process, with no stone left unturned, and Joe was engaging, attentive, and impressive throughout, and I felt that we could have a productive working relationship together.

"We welcome both Joe and Andy to The Den with open arms and look forward to seeing the impact they can make on and off the pitch throughout what we hope to be a long relationship with Millwall."

Edwards turned to coaching after being released by Chelsea as a player at the age of 16.

He has since enjoyed great success at youth level and led the Blues' academy side to back-to-back FA Cups in 2015 and 2016.

After more work with youth and development sides at Stamford Bridge, Edwards was promoted to become part of Lampard's first-team coaching set-up

when the Chelsea legend was appointed manager in July 2019.

He stayed on as part of the coaching staff when Thomas Tuchel replaced Lampard and led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021.

Edwards would then follow Lampard to Everton to act as his assistant manager and the pair returned to Chelsea earlier this year when Lampard was placed in interim charge of the club after Graham Potter's sacking.

Edwards' plan for young stars

By Kiro Evans JOE Edwards has opened the door to young stars thriving in his Millwall team as he reflected on the "flair" players already at the club.

The 37-year-old, who became the Lions' head coach earlier this week, has worked with youth players for much of his coaching career.

He led Chelsea's academy side to two FA Youth Cups and was boss of England under-20s before leaving for The Den. Edwards name-checked Romain Esse, 18, and Aidomo Emakhu, 20, as he spoke of his plans of integrating young players in his team.

He told Millwall TV: "I think there are several stages to bringing a player in and getting the best out of them. I think the first point is to make it absolutely clear what's expected of them. What does that role really require? Make sure they understand the demands.

"Because it can sound kind of romantic - 'let's bring the young boys in' - [but] it's a serious job they have to do. They need to know the limits and the demands.

So first and foremost making sure they know that, but once they know that, giving them as much support at the training ground as you can to equip them with that and make sure they're ready.

"Once you're doing that, once you're telling them what they need to do, and you're helping them every day, it's then that big piece of opportunity. Ultimately with certain players, certain types of football suits them more. So when you talk about players like Romain and Aidomo, you've got some real flair players there, attacking players. Not only are they young players and every fan likes to see one of their own get on the pitch, but when you've got those boys they can be the type of players that can get people off their seat when they get the ball.

"It's important the team is built for that as well, that we're looking after the ball well enough, make sure we get good possession in good areas so those boys can showcase what they do."

Joe eDwaRDs has described his vision for millwall’s playing style – but insists it will not be an overnight transformation.

The 37-year-old officially took over at The Den on Monday and had his first training session at Calmont Road on Tuesday morning.

Former Chelsea and Everton assistant manager Edwards, who leaves his job as England under-20 boss to take on his first club head coach role, credited his

predecessor Gary Rowett for his work after almost four years in charge.

“I think in terms of coaching experience, although I’ve seen lots of philosophies, playing styles and ways that managers like to work, of course I have my own beliefs and preferences,” Edwards said. “If you said to me, ‘What do I really want one of my teams to look like?’ I have a picture of that.

“I think what you get through youth development and working in the academy is a strong understanding that coaching at its best really is just getting the best out of people. Getting the best out of players and

the staff that you’re working with. Get the best out of people, put them in positions and systems and coach them to really see them flourish and hopefully the product of that is seeing the team get success. So for me that’s what will be the balance here.

“I remember talking years ago with Gary about his preferred style of play. His is probably quite different to mine but I full, full well know that there isn’t a right or wrong way of playing football. No one way is better than the other. You can be successful in many different ways of playing and I’ve seen that with the different managers I’ve worked

“For Gary and the guys that have been around it in recent years, to achieve what they have achieved – four consecutive tophalf finishes in the Championship – in a league that is one of the most competitive and difficult in the world, that’s not easy to do. I’ve got full respect for all the work that has gone before me and been done.

“Change can sometimes feel like a new lease of life and a breath of fresh air. What I’d like to see is us be proactive with the ball. The reason I’m conscious not to use the word possession too much is that I’m not an

obsessive possession-based coach where we have to have 65 or 70 per cent of the ball.

You can have 70 per cent of the ball in a game and not play well. I know that.

“I want us to be more on the front foot and proactive from an attacking point of view and that starts on the training pitch. A lot of the work we do in these early days and weeks will be stuff where it is players getting on the ball, thinking forward and playing forward, taking care of possession.

“I want the training to be enjoyable. If you’ve got people out there enjoying what they are doing then it is a big thing.”

mauRicio pochettino said his side were deserved winners of a chaotic London derby as he made an “emotional” return to the tottenham hotspur stadium with London rivals chelsea on monday night.

The Blues won 4-1 but that barely tells the story of a thrilling 100-plus minutes in which there were five disallowed goals - two for Spurs, three for Chelsea and two red cards leaving the home side playing with nine men from the 55th minute.

Pochettino’s side went 2-1 ahead in the 75th minute through Nicolas Jackson before the Blues striker added two more in the 94th and 97th minutes to complete his hat-trick.

Spurs took the lead in the sixth minute when Dejan Kulusevski’s shot deflected

in off Levi Colwill before Son Heung-min had a goal ruled out for offside.

Raheem Sterling and Moises Caicedo then had goals disallowed for handball and offside, before a VAR check after the latter resulted in a penalty and red card for Cristian Romero for a tackle that caught his Argentina international teammate Enzo Fernandez on the ankle. Cole Palmer scored the penalty before Ange Postecoglu’s side lost Micky van de Ven and James Maddison to injury.

Spurs were two men down after Destiny Udogie’s challenge on Sterling resulted in a second yellow card ten minutes after the break.

The hosts still maintained a high line and were caught out fifteen minutes from time when Sterling broke through to square for Jackson for a straightforward finish past Guglielmo Vicario.

The drama was unrelenting as Eric

Dier, one of three first-half Spurs substitutes, finished from a free-kick but yet another VAR check ruled the goal out for offside before Jackson finally settled matters.

“I think we deserved to win,” Pochettino, who managed Tottenham from 2014 to 2019, said. “We forced them to make too many mistakes. I think Tottenham was better in the first fifteen minutes and then I think we matched the game. I think our performance was good and [we started] to force to make a mistake. I think everything that you can see within during the game, I think was fair.

“I feel much better now. I think after four years to have the possibility to come back and to say hello to all the staff and the people that we have the possibility to say goodbye, I think it is a gift for us. Yes, very emotional.

“At the same time, I think the

memories, you know, in your skin, and then it was the game that was a very passionate game, very competitive game. I think being honest, winning the three points was really important for us.

I think it was an amazing, amazing day for us.”

Postecoglu said: “It's hard to analyse from a football perspective. You're left with the result which is disappointing.

You don't like to lose, particularly here at home. Super proud of the players' efforts, will, determination and desire to try to get something out of the game.”

On the numerous VAR checks, with nine in the first half alone, Postecoglu added: “It's where the game's heading.

Unfortunately it's how we're going to have to watch and participate in football from now on…I’ve said it before, I don't like it. I don't like the standing around.

I don't like the whole theatre around waiting for decisions.

“But I know that I'm in the wilderness with that. I'm on my own. In my 26 years I was always prepared to accept the referee's decisions, good, bad or otherwise, and I've had some shockers in my career, let me tell you. I've had some go my way as well but I cop that because I just want the game to be played.”
