Local Democracy Reporter Sadiq Khan has apologised for high levels of disruption on the Elizabeth line, as he pledged to work with Transport for London (TfL) to improve the service.

The mayor said it was “not good enough” that commuters were not receiving “a first class service”, following reports that the eastwest train was affected by disruption every weekday last week.

Liberal Democrat, Green and Tory politicians on the London Assembly were united on Monday in calling for Mr Khan to take tougher action to resolve the line’s issues, which include signalling and power supply problems.

The Elizabeth line struggled with historically low punctuality over the summer, when one in six of its services was delayed or cancelled.

More recently, services suffered six separate issues in just over 24 hours between Thursday

Conservative mayoral candidate Susan Hall said “constant disruptions” on the line showed that Mr Khan is “failing to keep London moving”.

Responding to criticism about the line’s reliability, the Labour mayor told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “It was raised at the last TfL board meeting, because the commissioner [Andy Lord] himself understands that the level of service on the Elizabeth line hasn’t been as good as we hoped. Of course it’s been a source of pride to us, how popular the line is. But it’s not good enough, the concerns that have been raised.

“We are speaking to Network Rail – a lot of these issues are to do with [the part of the line] west as you go past Paddington, and east as you go past Liverpool Street, which aren’t TfL lines. We are working more closely with Network Rail.

He added: “It’s really important [that] people receive a first class service from a first class line. It’s not been first class on some occasions and I apologise for that.”

Network Rail said earlier this month it has “brought in industry experts from the UK and the continent, as well as the manufacturers of some of our components, to understand precisely why some of our infrastructure isn’t performing how it should, and this forms the basis of our improvement plans”.

London TravelWatch, the capital’s transport watchdog, has said it wants to meet senior TfL operations staff to discuss what can be done to improve services.

Howard Smith, Elizabeth line director, said: “We sincerely apologise for the disruption that has affected some Elizabeth line services recently and we recognise that recent delays and cancellations have been frustrating for our customers.

“The causes have included problems with the signalling and power supply on Network Rail tracks in the west; trespassers on the line, where we have to stop services for safety reasons, and some track and train faults.

“As well as urgently reviewing recent incidents, we are working hard with Network Rail and Alstom, who maintain the trains, to minimise the impact on our customers and provide a safe and reliable railway.”

Data from the Office for Rail and Road (ORR) last month showed that only 82.5 per cent of Elizabeth line trains arrived on time between April and June – down 5.6 points on the first three months of the year.

Separate ORR figures also revealed that in the four weeks to August 19, the Elizabeth line had the most cancellations in the country – 9.1 per cent of services. This cancellation rate has dropped to 4.3 per cent in the four weeks to September 16, but that is still the joint second highest figure since Mr Khan opened the line in May 2022.

By Isabel Ramirez a pECKhaM woman, who revolutionised the food being served in Southwark schools and care facilities, is being celebrated for the work she's done to ensure all communities are catered for.

Olukemi Atijosan, 70, is a community activist who currently runs a lunch club for older people - but her work in Southwark started long before that.

She came to the UK from Ondo State in Nigeria in 1975 and has been based in and around Peckham for nearly fifty years.

The whole time she's lived here, Olukemi told us she has been an active part of the community - first working in schools, as well as for local authorities and the NHS. In 2002, after noticing that lots of children's needs were not being catered for in schools, the mother-of-four was 'determined' to change that.

"In those days, when it came to food in schools, black and other children from ethnic minorities didn't get a look in.

The menus were not diverse or the food they were used to."

"Now, every school has a range of foods and all cultures are represented."

Whilst this may be true today for local schools, Olukemi said it was a real fight to get this done - after being told repeatedly by institutions that the food she was suggesting was 'too expensive.'

"I was always told this. But it's just not true," she explained, "what is expensive is the way they were suggesting to feed us."

She referenced the three-course meals present at most British institutions - a starter, main and dessert format.

Once I showed them this was possible and that when you add up all the money being spent on these different courses - it amounts to the same price and sometimes less - only then did things start to change."

Before then, catering for London schools was all centralised - but now

most schools have individual control.

Through consulting and educating schools, Olukemi said she helped to change the way they cater, including in Redriff Primary School and Peter Hills with St Mary's & St Paul's Primary School - "I helped them to see the benefits of having control over their food based on their students' needs,"

she told us.

"In the schools I did this for, I made sure every culture present in that school was represented on the menu in some way."

Whilst doing the work with the school meals - she ran a Saturday school for twenty years for children in Southwark - to ensure children from immigrant

families didn't fall behind. Olukemi was also instrumental in setting up the African and Caribbean Meals on Wheels for vulnerable elderly residents in the '90s.

Currently, she operates a Tuesdays and Thursdays lunch club for older people out of Lordship Lane Church Hall in East Dulwich. "At the club, they find fellowship, and friendship and they reminisce about their life in the UK anyone over sixty can come along."

As well as her work achievements, she also survived breast cancer ten years ago - which prompted her to take on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2015 when she got the all-clear, whilst raising money for cancer research.

Olukemi Atijosan is one of eight people being honoured for their efforts over the years, by Age UK - as part of their Black History Month celebrations.

Reflecting on the last few decades, Olukemi added: "I believe we can only thrive as a society if our community is thriving."

The other honorees in their Black Icons exhibition include councillors Evelyn Akoto and Dora Dixon-Fyle, chairman of ElimHouse care facility Aubyn Graham and Older People's Services coordinator at Blackfriars Settlement, Tina Johnson.

Brenda Wade, the Day Care manager at Age UK, said: "It's important that our members see who has been doing all the important work for our older residents over the years. Southwark is such a diverse place and we want to recognise the work these people have done, especially from the BAME community, to improve the quality of life of thousands of older people in this borough."

Clement Ogbonnaya: The Peckham boy who built two successful pubs and says he's not done yet

A pub landlord, who has found his calling in Peckham and now Tulse Hill, discusses his childhood, his choice of resident chefs and what we can expect from him next.

The founder of Prince of Peckham and Queen of the South in Tulse Hill, Clement (Clem) Ogbonnaya, 42, sat down with us to discuss his journey - which, by his own admission, is far from over.

His first pub, on the corner of Clayton Road, has become known for being a place where 'everyone feels welcome' and recently won Pub of the Year at the Be Inclusive Hospitality Awards.

Clem, who lives in Bromley, explained that this was the most important thing for him when he opened it in 2017: "Pubs are great," he told us, "I love them. I grew up watching Eastenders - they're iconic places.

"So I wanted [Prince of Peckham] to look like a typical pub - but I also wanted it to be a space where everyone felt at home."

On coming to the UK from Nigeria when he was just six years old, Clem said: "When I arrived at Heathrow all those years ago - I remember not feeling very welcome and feeling alienated. And that's what I wanted to steer away from."

Clem went to primary school in Brockley and then came to Peckham for secondary, attending St Thomas the Apostle.

"Peckham back then wasn't what you see now. It definitely wasn't 'the eleventh coolest place in the world' or whatever.

"Anyone who knew it then would never say it was nice."

He recalled what growing up in Peckham was like for him: "I definitely wasn't one of the cool kids.

"After school, I was just interested in getting home. I didn't hang around on the streets or anything. I was more scared of my father than the police - and he just wanted us to come home."

Clem's parents, having moved the family over to better their lives, hold a close place in his heart. "Mum worked for Southwark Council in the housing office and my dad drove cabs.

"They did well to keep us clothed, housed and motivated."

"Peckham back then was not the space you see today."

He said his dad worked nights so they would never see him come in after work but one thing told them he'd got back safely.

"Kebabs were a sign my dad was home.

If there was a kebab on the side in the morning, we knew he was in.

"Now I have a thing about kebabs - they’re very nostalgic for me."

Before he was a landlord, Clem was a promoter for music venues across London so it's no surprise that the music events they run regularly at the pubs are important to him: "I'm a party guy," he commented. "I wanted to combine pubs and the culture I know and love."

Six years after opening his first venue, his second location, Queen of the South graced Tulse Hill in May (2023) and he described it as an ode to the women in his life.

"I'm surrounded by a lot of female energy,' he said, "my wife, my mum, I have two daughters. I really wanted this place to reflect that - even the chefs are the Flygerians who are two sisters serving Nigerian street food."

Asked why the places are successful, Clem said, "I wish I knew the formula for it.

"But I just make sure I'm myself and I think it's important to know your audiences too. With a pub like this, there's something for everyone."

He said when he first opened the Peckham site, two older women from over the road at the Flamborough Estate, came in for a drink.

"They said that's the first time they'd ever felt comfortable enough to walk in there,

even though it had been a pub for years and they said that was because of what I'd done with the place."

Of his resident chefs, White Men Can't Jerk, he said: "I thought the name was hilarious," Clem commented. "White Men Can't Jump is one of my favourite films."

But Clem admitted it had caused some controversy - with some people online suggesting he should have hired a blackowned catering business.

On this, he said: “I’ve seen people say it’s

cultural appropriation having two white British guys cooking Caribbean food - but if I wanted to make sushi would I not be able to because it’s not of black origin?

“At the end of the day, I shouldn't have to explain it - but they were friends of mine before and the food is great. They know what they're doing.

"You can't please everyone."

In an attempt to inspire local young people, he recently held a competition for young artists to paint a new mural on the

famous 'Welcome to Peckham' wall - in exchange for £1000. The winner will be announced very soon.

Happily married with two young children but still 'very much involved' in his businesses, Clem believes bringing people together is what he was 'meant to do.'

Looking to the future he said: "I want to open a pub every year," he said. "One more in South London - that's all I'll say about that for now. And then maybe move the idea outside of London too."

parEnTS arE “very sad” that a “lovely” peckham nursery is at risk of closure after its pupil numbers fell by almost two-thirds in seven years.

Council-run Ann Bernadt Nursery School, which is no longer “financially viable”. will shut its doors in August if the council decides to approve the closure.

Southwark Council's cabinet member for education said it was "an outrage" that "a lack of funding from central government" meant schools were closing.

Cassie Ryan, whose child attends the nursery, said: “It’s sad, it’s very sad… I really like this nursery. It’s got a great outdoor space and the staff are lovely. My daughter loves it as well.”

Nurseries and primary schools across the borough, and nationally, are struggling to remain open amid plummeting pupil admissions.

Ann Bernadt, which Ofsted has rated as Good since 2007, has seen pupil numbers fall from 123 in 2016/17 to 45 in September 2023.

Schools receive funding on a per pupil basis meaning Ann Bernadt has been plunged into a £300,000 deficit, up from £100,000 in 2021/22.

Ermelinda Djalo, another mum who has two children at the nursery, said she was told of the possible closure in September.

She said: “I wasn’t happy at all because

it’s close to my house and I have another baby that I sometimes bring to the baby group here.”

She explained that the class sizes were small enough for children to receive proper attention from teachers. “I like the environment I like the headteacher here, she’s very involved with everything going [on] around with the kids,” she said.

Before making any decision on closure, Southwark has launched a consultation

process giving parents and other stakeholders a chance to share their views on the situation.

Those discussions can involve parents and carers, staff, governors, the local MP and the Southwark Diocesan Board.

Southwark Council said it has already tried to stabilise the nursery’s finances, such as staff restructuring, with little success.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and

cabinet member for children, education and refugees, said: "It is well known that many schools and nurseries across London have struggled with the effects of a falling birth rate. It is an outrage that this, when combined with a per capita funding model and a lack of funding from central government, means that the cost of provision, running costs and fair pay for experienced staff is not met in schools or nurseries.

“Ann Bernadt Nursery school has been in significant deficit for some time, and has worked extremely hard, supported by the local authority, to balance its finances. Despite this, it has not been possible to reduce the deficit enough – no decision has been taken by the nursery as yet."

A council report says the building will remain a place of education and that it had identified a local need for provision to support children with autism.

It added that the closure could also present an opportunity to “develop the offer” being developed by the Children’s Centre which is adjacent to the nursery.

Southwark’s birth rate has fallen by 33 per cent since 2012 – equivalent to around 1,650 childbirths - and in Peckham and Nunhead the fall is 35 per cent. This has had a far-reaching impact on the financial viability of schools across the borough.

Kintore Way, an outstanding-rated nursery in Bermondsey, is facing staff cuts amid a £450,000 budget deficit.

But plummeting pupil admissions has proved most severe for Southwark’s primary schools.

Townsend Primary School in Walworth closed its doors in the summer as did St Francesca Cabrini Primary School in Honor Oak. Meanwhile, Cobourg Primary School has merged with Camelot Primary School and St Jude’s with Charlotte Sharman Primary School.

By Isabel Ramirez ThE FaMouS Christmas lights switch-on will return to Elephant and Castle next month, with a giant tree, entertainment and free hot chocolate.

On Friday 24 November, everyone's invited to Castle Square to enjoy an afternoon filled with live music, carols, food, and special guests - all culminating in the annual lights switch on.

Festive entertainment on offer will include the chance to visit Santa and his elf in his grotto and children can post their Christmas list. Guests can warm up by collecting free gift vouchers to exchange for hot chocolate and non-alcoholic mulled wine.

The lights will be switched on at 5:00pm by the Mayor of Southwark, Michael Situ.

There will also be the sound of carols sweeping through the air, thanks to the Southwark Brass Band and the Castle Square Community Choir.

By Herbie Russell pECKhaM ryE Station is inviting locals to its restored victorian waiting room for a month of historical talks, literature, art and community action.

The stunning vaulted hall, which lay abandoned for sixty years before being reopened as part of the station’s renovation, is hosting events until Saturday, November 18.

Designed in the French Second Empire style, the breathtaking space was once adorned with huge gas chandeliers, providing a place for Victorian commuters to take a breather in between journeys.

One hundred years on, visitors to the Rye Lane station can finally enjoy the space once again.

Literature lovers can attend an evening organised by the Peckham bookshop Review today (Thursday

November 2).

Authors Evie Wild, Staffan Gnosspelius and Roz Dineen will discuss their writing processes and how they’ve engaged with mental health in their work.

Local campaign group Peckham Vision will host four hours of community action on Saturday, November 4.

Participants will learn about the redevelopment of the Aylesham

Shopping Centre and community initiatives taking place in the area.

There will also be a 90-minute yoga and sound experience delivered by Rebekah Jade, ending with a soothing gong bath from fellow teacher Shamita Ray, on Sunday November 5.

But this is just a sample of the events on offer.

Lambeth councillors approved the construction of the tower near to the Union Jack Club [UJC], an organisation that provides respite to members of the armed forces and emergency services, at a planning meeting on Tuesday, October 17.

A number of properties on Waterloo Road and Cornwall Road will be bulldozed to make way for the development, which is expected to bring 1,900 jobs to the area and includes affordable workspace.

But the UJC – which is located just metres from the planned new building – says the office block will leave its members’ rooms without enough light if built.

Jan Donovan, speaking on behalf of the UJC at the planning meeting, said: “[The] benefits are at a cost and that cost is borne solely by the men and women of our armed services and emergency services.

The speaker added: “It is worth noting that the UJC veterans are spread across two tower buildings and eight façades with only one of these façades facing towards the proposal. The majority of the UJC veterans are therefore relatively unaffected by the proposal.”

A planning committee made up of five Labour councillors and one Green councillor approved the plans by a vote of 5:1.

Councillor Scott Ainslie, Green member for Streatham St Leonard’s, voted against, saying he was concerned about the impact of the tower on the area’s heritage.

Explaining his decision to vote in favour of the plans, Cllr Malcolm Clark, Labour member for Streatham Wells, said: “I do recognise that there will be some impact on the Union Jack Club on the outlook and the daylight, sunlight on some windows. But equally having been there I recognise that many of those rooms have an outlook to the east as well.

“They are hotel rooms by and large.

They are rooms that are not primary living residences for most people. There are alternate rooms and bedrooms as has been discussed.”

In July this year, TfL announced their proposal to scrap the popular one day travel card as part of its settlement with the government over COVID funding.

The scrapping of this card, which allows passengers to ride on all affiliated TfL transport for a flat rate, was reckoned to make savings of £40m per year.

This ticket is particularly popular with passengers on the outer fringes of the borough, like those in Croydon, and is used more than 14m times a year by those visiting the city.

27 million travel cards were sold at their peak in 2018, before that figure dropped

to 12 million during the pandemic.

Sadiq Kahn’s initial proposal meant that after a six-month period, the paper travel card would no longer be sold or accepted on TfL, tube, bus, rail, tram and London Overground services.

However, in the wake of heavy opposition from public campaigns across the capital, TfL announced that it has negotiated with rail firms to save the ticket, thus ensuring it’s circulation for the near future.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “Delighted to announce we’ve managed to save the Day Travelcard. This saves a much-valued ticket option for visitors to London, while giving TfL a fairer share of ticket revenue.”

Vern Stokes OBE, a garrison sergeant major in the army and Lambeth resident, added: “The armed forces community and the club do not deserve to exist in the shadows. Its members merit a home from home.

“Allowing the Union Jack Club to be in the shadows of a corporate development… It’s a step backwards and not what our brave veterans, serving soldiers and their families deserve.”

The council’s independent daylight and sunlight advisor said that a minority of rooms in the UJC would be left with daylight levels that fell below the council’s own guidelines for flats, if the development went ahead.

But he added that there were already a small number of rooms in the UJC building with similar levels of daylight and that the rooms in the UJC were mainly for short hotel-style breaks.

Most visitors to the UJC stay for up to 28 nights but Jan Donovan said that a minority of guests stay for longer. In 2022, 118 people stayed for nights or more.

The longest stay was 150 nights, she added.

Peckham resident Jennifer Chelley said: “They say that people come from all over because it’s the only place [they] can do it and [they] don’t get stopped.”

The increase in graffiti is made worse by the fact that private property owners are often reluctant to remove graffiti themselves.

According to Southwark Council, most owners aren’t willing, or cannot afford, the cost of graffiti removal. Some fear the vandals will return post-clean-up, while others are simply tolerant of it.

Southwark Council currently spends

£215,000 per year on graffiti removal and says the policy change will only result in “a marginal extra use of resources”.

Graffiti clean-up teams will focus on erasing graffiti in close proximity to council buildings, which they would normally clear up anyway.

Local campaign group Peckham Vision welcomed the move. A spokesperson said: "Rye Lane is suffering from an epidemic of graffiti, defacing its buildings, degrading the public realm, making the street and its environs appear run down and intimidating, especially after dark.

Traditionally, the council has removed spray-paintings from its own properties while charging private property owners for the clean-up service.

Locals had complained that an "epidemic" of graffiti had made areas like Peckham feel "intimidating" and "run down".

But following a policy change approved earlier this month, Southwark Council will remove graffiti from private property for free as long it isn’t over two metres above ground level.

According to a council report, the policy change aims to stem the rise of unsightly daubings at minimal cost to the taxpayer.

Southwark Council has seven graffiti removal teams responsible for tackling vandalism on the sides of buildings. But they’ve struggled to keep up.

According to council data, the level of graffiti has doubled since 2018, from a score of 4.96 to 10 per cent last year.

In June, the News reported that in Peckham, one area particularly

"While not just confined to Rye Lane, we ask the Council to be proactive, approaching building owners to agree to cleaning as well as taking action to deter and prosecute offenders."

The group did however express concern that no extra money was being used to fund the policy change.

There are also limits to the council's newfound powers. It will only tackle graffiti up to two metres above ground level without charge. This is because removing graffiti at height is more complex and costly.

Southwark Council has indicated this is

just one of a range of actions available to tackle graffiti.

Others include working with police to identify and prosecute graffiti vandals, community protection notices and the use of community art initiatives including murals.

Southwark Council aims to remove 98 per cent of graffiti within 24 hours, a target it claims to have “historically” met.

Southwark residents are encouraged to report graffiti to the council using the FixMyStreet app. Campaign group Peckham Vision is also inviting locals to an event where they'll be able to nominate local buildings they believe are in need of a clean-up.

Malaysian pop-up diner finds suCCess at a nunhead pub

By Isabel Ramirez For ThE last few weeks, a new pop-up restaurant has received a warm welcome at a nunhead pub, ahead of its opening in peckham next month.

According to Michelin-trained Head Chef, Ady Yacob, Janda Diner is a Malaysian street food restaurant with a twist of fine dining.

Ahead of their restaurant opening in Peckham, they wanted to test the waters after finding lots of people here had never eaten Malaysian food before.

They currently have a pop-up at the Man of Kent pub in Nunhead, which doesn't typically offer food. But the landlady, Sandra, offered it to the group for them to get their name out

there and she commented that 'it's been great.'

By his own admission, Ady never cooked when he was younger - but instead enjoyed typical Malaysian dishes cooked by his mother and sister - including Rendang, a curry typically made with beef.

"It's so cheap to eat out in Malaysia," he explained, "so when I moved out to Kuala Lumpur, I didn't have to cook as food was so cheap."

Ady, who was a graphic designer at the time, explained his passion for cooking started when he moved to London in 2010.

"It's so expensive to go out to eat here," he said. "And English food - it's not bad but it needs more spice. So I had to learn to cook for myself."

He said his sister started teaching him the basics on Skype. Wanting to

learn more, Ady went on to train at Le Cordon Bleu Cooking School and found his edge by refining authentic Malaysian flavours using techniques he learned. He later worked at Hide a Michelin-star restaurant in Mayfair.

Up until last year, there were two Malaysian pop-up restaurants on Rye Lane - but both have now closed.

The idea for Janda Diner came about when he joined up with some old friends who shared the passion to bring Malaysian street food to the area.

Asked how the reaction at the pub has been so far - Ady said: "Not many people have had Malaysian food before so it is new for them. But they all love it so far."

Sandra, the landlady at the Man of Kent added: "I was really happy to have them. People love the food and I don't have to clean up," she joked.

"The guys are fantastic."

Justin Henry Murder: Police release CCTV footage of last known movements

The 34-year-old was last seen buying food from a McDonald’s drivethru on London Road, Croydon, on Sunday, October 15.

Two men, aged 28 and 29, have been charged in connection with the murder probe but Justin has not been found.

Detectives say they still need the public’s help in establishing what happened to Justin. Police hope releasing the footage will “jog someone’s memory”.

A spokesperson for Mr Henry’s family said: “Our family is devastated and want answers. Justin is a loving and happy person and wouldn’t hurt a fly.

"This is a plea to the public for information on where Justin is. This could be your son or loved one.

"Justin comes from a very close family who are desperate for answers.”

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Webb, of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “We hope that in releasing this footage it will jog someone’s memory and help us give Justin’s family the answers they are

Later that evening, at around 9.50pm, Justin was captured on CCTV buying food at the McDonald’s drivethru on London Road, Croydon.

tributes paid to 'inspirational' teaCher who developed the best Maths sCholarship in the Country

TribuTES havE poured in for Morris Silvera after his death aged just 60, the “inspirational” Kingsdale teacher who dedicated his life to the success of his students.

During his 35-year association with the Dulwich school, the assistant headteacher developed “the best Mathematics Scholarship Programme in the country”.

His passing has also seen family and friends reflect on his life outside education. An “exceptional athlete”, he represented Britain in Judo and could have been a professional footballer.

In a tribute to his much-loved friend and colleague, Kingsdale Headteacher Steve Morrison said: “The teaching profession has lost a first-class performer of the highest calibre.

“Our thoughts are with his wife, daughter, family and friends. His memorable and most impressive teaching legacy will live on through the achievements of his students and the scores of staff he mentored, tutored and trained.”

Morris was born in Tooting Bec, Wandsworth and attended Hillcroft Secondary School which later became Ernest Bevin.

Throughout his life, Morris was a talented athlete and was on Great Britain’s Junior Judo Team, eventually rising well above black belt.

An avid Tottenham Hotspurs fan, Morris was also "silky, speedy and powerful" with the ball at his feet, competing with various amateur sides, including Park Athletics in Wimbledon.

He is said to have been good enough to go professional, but his true passion lay in a career in education.

“He had too much academic potential not to go to university and in any event he was not driven by fame and fortune,” said Steve Morrison.

So instead, Morris studied Mathematics at the University of East Anglia before doing his teacher training at Loughborough University.

He first joined Kingsdale Foundation School in 1987, becoming Head of Mathematics, before departing around 1996. He would rejoin in 2001 as Director of Mathematics and a Senior Teacher.

Those who had the fortune of working with, or being taught by Mr Silvera, quickly realised they were in the presence of a unique educator.

Fellow teacher Dr Rachel Ward said: “When I joined the school staff, I always found Mr Silvera such a friendly and

positive colleague.

“The relaxed, modest and humorous way in which he talked to the students marked him out as an immensely strong teacher, the kind you are lucky to meet a few of in your career.”

Former Colleague Mostapha Alfaour said: “Under his leadership, I experienced a sense of unity and purpose that made Kingsdale an exceptional place to work and learn.”

Always committed to delivering the best education to pupils, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds, Morris established the Main School and Sixth Form Mathematics Scholarships.

This meant hundreds of pupils received extra Maths support including one-toone tuition, trips abroad and entrance into competitions worth £1,000 per year.

Following a battle with cancer, throughout which he displayed “an incredibly courageous mindset”, Morris passed away in the early hours of Friday, October 20, 2023.

He passed away peacefully accompanied by his family and friends who had maintained a continuous vigil by his bedside for many weeks. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

In accordance with Morris’s wishes, his childhood friend Steve Verrall who he met at the age of 5, has established

Mr Morris Silvera developed a leading maths scholarship programme; and on his 60th Birthday (inset)

a bursary in his honour on behalf of his family.

The Morris Silvera Scholarship Fund will primarily help disadvantaged students who have overcome significant

barriers to continue their education at university. The fund has already exceeded its target for this year receiving many thousands of pounds of donations in the first few days.

By Charlotte Lillywhite Local Democracy Reporter Londoners living near an old Victorian waterworks say it has fallen into a horrific state and the riverfront is being wasted, as they throw support behind calls to turn it into a nature reserve.

Seething Wells filter beds in Surbiton were used to provide clean water to the capital before Thames Water decommissioned the 19th-century site in 1992. It is now privately owned by Cascina Limited.

Seething Wells Action Group (SWAG), made up of local residents, has been campaigning for the site to be turned into a nature reserve for years.

Kingston Council created a working group last year to investigate options for the site’s future, and approved recommendations put forward by the group on September 21.

A council report said there was “increasing concern regarding ongoing maintenance and activity” at the site and the potential impact on wildlife.

Seething Wells filter beds, Surbiton

The approved recommendations include the council exploring the possibility of providing a nature reserve on the site for public access, heritage and nature conservation.

The council is not the landowner so it can’t designate the site as a local nature reserve itself.

Surbiton residents told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) they would like to see the site opened up to the public as a nature reserve.

Yeni Frost, 42, has lived in Surbiton since 2008 and often passes the filter beds, which she described as being in “pretty horrific” condition.

She said: “It doesn’t function as it should be which is a shame because when the weather is bad, for example, this could be a place that can be used to control floods.

But if it’s not functioning then that will not work.”

Ms Frost said the site is a “hotspot for property” due to its proximity to Surbiton station and the River Thames. But she argued building homes on it would only “benefit the developer’s pocket” – not the local community or wider public.

Throwing her support behind calls for a nature reserve on the site, she said: “Especially now Surbiton [is] becoming more and more houses, having more natural things will make Surbiton a better place to live for families. We could have more plants or more birds or more animals, bees, that can benefit from this place.”

The council issued a Section 215 notice on Cascina in December 2021 requiring it to carry out maintenance works to improve the condition of the site, which the company appealed.

Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court varied the requirements of the notice on October 14, 2022, and gave Cascina more time to complete the works. This included removing all waste and debris from the land and vegetation growth from the boundary wall and railings.

At the meeting on September 21, Lib Dem councillor Roger Hayes warned there was still a “great deal to be done” to achieve the working group’s aims for the site.

He said: “Unfortunately, although the owners are better than they were, I’m

afraid they were really not very good at all not so long ago which is why it has fallen into the disrepair that we see it in today.

“So hopefully they will continue to improve in their attitude and their behaviour and that we can collaboratively find a solution both for the benefit of the community and the benefit of the heritage and the biodiversity which that site is capable of supporting.”

Previous plans from Cascina to develop the site include an application in 2011 to build 64 homes on a floating pontoon, a 92-berth leisure marina, seven residential moorings and a restaurant, along with a public nature reserve, riverside walk and heritage centre.

The proposals were thrown out by the council in 2013 and later dismissed on appeal after a public inquiry.

Neil Brown, 56, moved to the area around four years ago and said the filter beds are an “eyesore” in their current state.

He told the LDRS it would be “lovely” to have a nature reserve on the site, with opportunities for walks along the Thames. At the moment, he said, “this

whole riverfront is just a waste”.

Mr Brown said he understood local opposition to homes being built on the site “because there’s enough traffic around here”. He said: “I can see why people would be opposed to building houses on it and that’s probably the problem because people would love to be building houses [there].”

Josie Akbar, 62, moved into her home opposite the filter beds 23 years ago and slammed how the site had been left as “totally wrong”.

She said the filter beds were “filled with water, it was beautiful” when she moved in, and that she bought her home thinking that would continue to be her view. She said: “When we had really cold weather, the whole thing would freeze over. It was absolutely beautiful to look at.”

But she said the condition of the site had since deteriorated to the point that it “looked like a bomb site for months”.

She also said she was “very disappointed” that the council had not bought the site.

Ms Akbar added she was strongly opposed to homes being built on it, and that she would like to see a nature reserve there. She said: “It would be lovely if people then could get access onto it and use it, whereas at the moment it’s totally unsafe.”

A Cascina spokesperson said its contractors had started works some time ago to comply with the Section 215 notice, and that they were still in progress.

The spokesperson said: “The landowner would like to reiterate that the site has never been a nature reserve. Any vegetation that colonised the site was self-seeded (wind-borne) plants and trees that had to be removed as they were undermining the structure.

"The only way to deliver these community aspirations is a compromise by both parties brought about by enabling development.”

A spokesperson for Kingston Council said it is “fully committed to doing all it can to protect Seething Wells filter beds” but it has “limited powers” as it doesn’t own the land.

The spokesperson said: “On September 21, 2023, the Seething Wells Councillor Working Group, a cross-party group set up to investigate the additional options available regarding the protection of the wildlife and diversity at Seething Wells filter beds, presented formal recommendations to the council’s place committee. These include exploring the provision of a nature reserve for public access, exploring the options for heritage protection including potentially applying to Historic England for the entire site, and seeking proactive dialogue with the landowners to enhance the management and maintenance of the site.

"The recommendations were unanimously approved. A Section 215 Notice has already been served on the site, requiring the restoration of the structure and the removal of rubbish and waste from the land.”

The event was part of the exManchester Utd centre-back’s Positive Futures programme, a charitable initiative supporting marginalised young people.

Raised in Peckham, Rio was eager to give back to the community he grew up in. He couldn’t attend the tournament on this occasion but said: “It’s brilliant to see the work of the Foundation continuing to grow in South London, especially in Peckham as my home area.

“The Positive Futures programme has been running for a year now with support from the National Lottery, and tournaments like this that give young people a chance to meet with other teams from outside Southwark.

“To build those relationships and create new experiences is a key part of the journey and opportunities we try to create. Big well done to the staff, clubs and young people involved!”

The competition was for girls and boys aged fourteen to sixteen and followed the success of a similar tournament held in Lambeth last year.

It was a chance for players to learn about The Rio Ferdinand Foundation, which introduces young people from working-class families to wider career and networking opportunities.

Before it was installed, air ambulances had to land some distance away from the hospital, with patients being driven the remainder of the way.

But thanks to the helipad, emergency transfer times have plummeted from 25 minutes to just five minutes.

Robert Bertram, Chief Executive of the HELP Appeal said: “With nearly one landing every day, this lifesaving helideck is one of the busiest in the country. Every landing has resulted in up to 25 minutes being saved in transferring the patient to specialist treatment. This is absolutely vital for the most seriously ill and is helping to save their lives.”

The helideck was funded with a £2.75 million donation from the HELP Appeal, the only charity in the country dedicated to funding hospital helipads.

Since it was built, it’s taken 2,389 landings. In 2019, it started operating 24/7 allowing it to accept even more patients.

The pad also has a Deck Integrated Fire

Fighting System (DIFFS) - the first ever on the UK mainland.

The HELP Appeal has funded 49 helipads to date, which have seen over 25,000 landings in total across the country.

Dr Malcolm Tunnicliff, Clinical Director at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The development of the helideck at King’s has been a huge achievement and we are indebted to support from the HELP Appeal and our many other local donors.

"In seven years the helideck has contributed to improving the care we give to major trauma patients, not just during the day, but 24/7 as the first night capable helideck in London.”

Parents and children at a Herne Hill school are desperate for the return of their humanshaped parking sign which appears to have been stolen.

Bewildered parents and children were “outraged” when they arrived at Judith Kerr Primary School to find the sign, named Sophie, was missing on Tuesday, October 10.

One local parent has claimed police have located the culprit. However, the school is still awaiting the sign’s return.

Local parent Celeste Hicks said: “My kids were outraged but then again I was quite outraged already.”

She added: “I was upset so we asked around and made up posters and put them out and about. Somebody shared it on a WhatsApp group and somebody said they’d seen it and, at

that point, I thought I’d try the police.”

Sophie is one of three one-metretall, humanoid signs that parents bought in June to make the traffic situation safer around the school.

Celeste said some parents had become “scared” to walk their kids to school due to parked cars blocking drivers’ sight lines on Half Moon Lane.

Cars parked illegally on yellow lines were causing vehicles to come “flying around corners”, putting children at risk.

Celeste says, since Sophie’s kidnap, cars have been seen parking on yellow lines once again.

The Met Police could not confirm whether or not the sign had been located.

Instead, a spokesperson said the officer leading the investigation would make contact with the school principal to “discuss the return of the sign in more detail”.

By Kevin Quinn Local schools and community groups, who want to make their buildings greener, can now apply for a new council fund to pay for solar panels and more.

Southwark Community Energy Fund is now open for applications from all groups with charitable or not-forprofit aims which are based or work in Southwark.

The fund will distribute grants of up to £50,000 to support community energy projects that produce renewable energy (such as solar panels or heat pumps), improve the energy efficiency of their buildings and reduce carbon emissions.

Southwark Council have launched it as part of its mission to make the borough carbon-neutral by 2030.

There is also funding available to help groups of residents or neighbours come together and form a community energy group or cooperative. Example projects include solar panels and batteries, heat pumps, insulation and retrofitting, and LED lighting.

Anyone interested is invited to attend a free online event on Tuesday 14

November where they can find out more and ask questions to the team directly.

Cllr James McAsh, the council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency said: “I am delighted to launch Southwark Community Energy Fund, which will offer vital funding to our community groups, schools and faith groups to help them make their buildings more environmentally friendly.”

“Helping community energy to blossom in the borough is a key part of our work to make Southwark carbon neutral. As a council, we are working hard to reduce our own emissions, and this funding will help our residents to join us on this journey and take community-led climate action.”

The fund is for community buildings and is not available for private residential properties or commercial groups and organisations.

wiMbledon eXpansion plans - inCluding 39 new Courts - approved

By Harrison Galliven Local Democracy Reporter ThE ConTrovErSiaL expansion of the all England Lawn Tennis Club into the former Wimbledon park golf club took a step further last Thursday as Merton Council approved the plans.

After a marathon session, Merton councillors voted six to four in favour of the plans to build 38 new practice courts and an 8000 seater show court over the site of the old Wimbledon Park golf club.

While the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) claimed this round, strong local opposition will mean this process is far from complete.

Nearly 80 members of the Save Wimbledon Park campaign gathered outside Merton’s Civic Centre before the hearing last night to protest what they see as a corporate land grab into historic public land.

Many of these protesters filled the seats of the public gallery and gave audible utterances of dismay throughout the hearing.

It should be noted that the plans do not involve building on public Wimbledon Park land, just the former golf club.

Following the council vote, one spectator abruptly declared that the “council chamber was officially designated a climate crime scene” and told the approving councillors to “hang their heads in shame” before being escorted out of the building.

Despite cries from the gallery,

councillors in favour saw the proposals as a clear economic boost for the area, providing jobs and reclaiming land that was previously a pay to play golf course.

In an impassioned closing speech, Dan Johnston, Labour’s councillor for the Figges Marsh Ward, asked the chamber: “Do you want to be looking at lovely green fields or playing on lovely green fields?”

Much of the evening’s proceedings focused on dissecting the fine details of the planning proposal.

In their assessment, Merton’s planning officers advised the proposals would result in “physical harm” to Wimbledon Park’s Metropolitan Open Land designation.

However, they concluded “very special circumstances” meant “substantial public benefits would clearly outweigh the harm” of the development.

AELTC’s case for public benefit largely focuses on its creation of a new 23-acre public park, with access free and all year round outside of the three week championship period.

They also promised environmental benefits in the way of de-silting and de-culverting the lake as well as retaining veteran trees.

This included lengthy discussions about the public availability of the new practice courts.

AELTC confirmed that seven of the 38 new practice courts will be accessible to school children and members of the public at variable rates.

Many questions were also asked about how the park’s historic

Capability Brown design would be protected. This led to an expert giving the chamber a brief history lesson on the famed Georgian gardener and his design characteristics.

Billy Hayes, Labour’s councillor for the Graveney ward, summed the night up in his closing submissions by describing the evening as a “very British debate, with a lot of detail, a lot of grinding detail.”

This was not lost on the chamber, as earlier in the evening they found themselves debating how geese would be kept from trespassing onto the new practice courts.

Among those speaking against the proposal was Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond, one of the two cross party MPs supporting the campaign.

He told the LDRS it was only the second time in 18 years that he has got involved in a council debate matter.

In his statement he added: “I believe tennis and Wimbledon to be synonymous, but in my view I want to see a new application that benefits both Wimbledon and the community.

Other councillors speaking against the proposal described building on the former golf course as an environmental disaster and characterised the area as ‘the lungs of the community.’ Protesters outside the civic centre echoed this in their chant, ‘trees not tennis’.

Despite the setback for the Save Wimbledon Park campaign, they have vowed to continue the fight.

Centre, an elderly campaigner named Joy said: “What they’re doing is outrageous. Wimbledon residents won’t take it.

"We fought 25 years ago to make sure our area was designated a conservation area and we will fight again.”

Many families were in attendance at the protest and, according to a local resident named Mark, there were lots of people from around the borough there too.

One mother told the LDRS: “We’re here to protect this park for our children, and those school children who will be affected by the near constant traffic resulting from the expansion."

Save Wimbledon Park member Simon Wright jokingly described the protesters as looking like an ‘M&S jumble sale.’

Despite the vocal opposition, there are also a number of local residents in favour of the development.

One such resident is Richard Higgs, whose house looks over the old Wimbledon Park Golf course from Rectory Orchard. He told the LDRS in the run-up to the meeting: “Not everyone hates the scheme.

"They (AELTC) are the number one taxpayer in Merton and if we are to get out of the woes the country is in we can’t stop businesses that actually pay tax.

“Whatever they do they are going to do quite well. You compare it to other organisations buying that land and doing something else. If there is one

organisation that I would be happy with doing it, it would be.

When asked about the question of permissive access to the park. Higgs said: "I feel more confident about their ability to control things than other public bodies.

"Wimbledon would not want to screw up, because they’ve got a fabulous brand."

AELTC’s case for expansion, launched in 2021, is to ensure they can hold the qualifying round of the championships on site and, in their words, “keep the tournament at the elite level.”

The week-long qualifier rounds are currently played at a site in Roehampton, on which AELTC holds a lease.

However, this is only the next stage in the long battle between AELTC and the community. The site’s part location in Wandsworth means AELTC must now await approval from that council.

They will also face a probable appeal from the Save Wimbledon Park campaign before they can see if the plans ever come into fruition.

It is estimated that the new courts are unlikely to be in operation before 2030.

Sally Bolton, Chief Executive of the All England Club, said, “We are delighted that the London Borough of Merton has resolved to approve our plans for the AELTC Wimbledon Park Project.

“Our proposals will both secure the future of The Championships for generations to come by bringing Qualifying to SW19, and provide

a transformation in community amenities – including a new 23 acre park for everyone to enjoy on land which has been inaccessible to the public for over 100 years.

"We now look forward to the decision of Wandsworth Council’s Planning Committee in the coming weeks.”

Save Wimbledon Park spokesperson, Susan Cusack said: “I had never heard so much ‘greenwashing’. Merton Council via Martin Whelton declared a Climate Emergency in 2019 and this decision to allow development on Metropolitan Open Land doesn’t sit well with that declaration.”

Iain Simpson, Chair Wimbledon Park Residents Association, said: “We are not at all surprised by the outcome of the vote. Most of the inconsistencies in the report were glossed over.

"Merton did not even bring their own experts into the hearing, and instead relied on the applicant to advise the councillors who were asking the questions!

"In addition, their pronouncements on the environment still ignored their own expert advice where it didn’t suit them!

“On all that was said about the stadium and the buildings, these are still in outline – and outline designs on protected land contravene Merton’s own planning regulations.

They therefore cannot be discussed in any meaningful way. This is just a stage in what will be a long process for which Save Wimbledon Park is well prepared.”

‘Well, it is only press night - and look at that, [strums guitar] it’s still in tune’. The audience erupted with laughter, which turned to applause, which turned to cheering.

Whilst this was no doubt an unintentional breaking of the fourth wall, the ripple effect was palpable. Any trace of tension or awkwardness that one might expect from a snugly seated British audience, sitting in-the-round, was dissolved. A rapport had been built, and we knew we were in safe hands.

LET’S gET my confession out of the way. i did not enjoy this play. playwright alexander Zeldin says that he wrote with the intention of celebrating ordinary life, of shining the spotlight for once on the unnoticed and unsung, writes Katie Kelly...

One of my favourite quotes from all literature is: “For the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.”

So, I should have absolutely loved it.

The basic story is that of Alice who spends a life trying to find her way to fulfilment in ways that require a courageous swimming upstream against the prevailing culture from 1943 to 2021.

It is in many ways brilliant. The

Perhaps due, in part, to the play’s semi-autobiographical nature, this also provided a rather seamless introduction to Ria, Manic Street Creature’s witty, charming, self-deprecating protagonist.

Cloaked as the tale of a determined young artist’s attempt to penetrate London’s unforgiving gigging scene, Manic Street Creature gradually reveals itself as something else entirely. Ten powerful tunes, performed with Rachel Barnes and Harley Johnson, create the skeleton for Ria’s story: an exploration of poorly diagnosed mental health issues and unresolved childhood trauma’s insidious effect on its victims and their relationships.

Dan and Ria’s meet-cute encounter sets the audience up to expect a predictable

story arc. Handsome, emotionally unavailable artist lures naïve female into a pseudo-relationship, before retreating when presented with the prospect of meaningful commitment. But after quite an abrupt narrative diversion, it becomes apparent that Dan is not necessarily the stereotypical, self-indulgent tortured soul we first thought.

As details of Dan’s struggles transpire, Ria’s role morphs from that of the admiring girlfriend, into an entire support system. The strain of this transition is communicated candidly throughout her songs, which allow the audience to more deeply access her sadness, resentment and distress. Starting as spectators, our experience grows increasingly visceral as Ria becomes consumed by her need to act

staging is superb. As we enter the story of Alice’s ordinary, and as she describes it, ‘boring’ life, which is symbolised in the first scene by a perfectly rendered scruffy school stage. It was quite disorienting, almost as if we had arrived in the

wrong place and were about to be treated to an amateur dramatic performance.

The line between being spectators and participants was kept thin throughout the play. The house lights never quite went down; the

I felt slightly disillusioned at the first signs of what could have been a rather lazy ‘absent father’ trope. The recurring device of Ria’s dad’s voicemail message was about as much substance as this element of the plot was afforded.

However, as the narrative developed it became clear that the details of this father-daughter relationship were not the intended focus. Instead, it was one strand in the messy web of Ria’s co-dependent relationship with Dan. This was great food for thought on the murky conundrum of what constitutes a healthy romantic relationship. At what point does it cross the threshold into unhealthy territory? What boundaries need to be put in place to protect both

parties from each other's baggage?

Exploring the nuances within themes of love, depression, childhood trauma and suicide, Memon offers timely commentary on a number of prevalent issues, particularly the male mental health crisis.

Her handling of these issues is tactful without feeling cursory. But what really gives this play its authenticity is the subtle injection of humour throughout, creating a cocktail of pessimism, hilarity and despair that only a true lived experience could give you the recipe for.

cast occasionally intermingled with the audience and appeared through auditorium doors. The set changes happened undisguised, albeit wellchoreographed.

There is much that is unsettling in the story. The #metoo moments are powerfully disturbing, so much so that the trigger warnings felt insufficient. A woman next to me had to leave and ‘regroup’ for a while.

The acting of Amelda Brown as the older Alice was beautiful, grounded and wise whereas Eryn Jean Norville as her younger self added to the general sense of agitation. Her performance was permanently ‘wired’ as if on the edge of some kind of breakdown.

The narrative would justify this but it led to an extraordinarily tense hour and 50 minutes, unrelieved by an interval. This stress was only increased by the music which was

original, impressive and at times oppressive.

The supporting cast is strong and versatile, convincingly playing numerous parts each. Pamela Rabe brought some welcome relief as Eva, a no-nonsense feminist Germaine Greer-a-like; but beyond the first few minutes when the tension was mostly humorous, there wasn’t much let up in the misery.

Not all theatre needs to be light entertainment but even in the portrayal of a challenging life there is often hope and humour to be found. I left this show feeling simultaneously impressed and depressed.

Rumble in the Jungle - Rematch

The proud nation had not long freed itself from evil colonists and were still in the learning stage of governing themselves properly when a Big Fight was arranged between Muhammed Ali (seeking to regain his Heavyweight Crown) and George Foreman (a former street robber and all-round violent man). The match was named Rumble in the Jungle and the world’s press wanted to be part of it.

This immersive experience of reliving the events surrounding that iconic boxing match has been created in a huge warehouse in Canada Water by a team of people who have perfected their skills over several years.

Our first encounter is with a boxing ring where four actors play the parts of some of the people who were there at the time. They bob and weave around the ring as they introduce themselves, and us to their stories, which is the story of Zaire.

Moving on through the swinging punchbags we enter a cavernous space; there is a shanty shack market in one corner where stalls sell African art and motifs, cocktails and a selection of Zairian food. On the other side is a smart bar, candlelit tables and a small dais where musicians play jazz to the crowd; they are joined by a singer to dial up a mood of class and money.

The two extremes of this country are highlighted early on. While myself and my guest, boxing fan Paul Brown, make ourselves comfortable we drink a Belgian beer and forget that it was the Belgians who colonised Zaire, appropriated its natural resources and

This was a game of two halves: one half for the rich and one for the poor Congolese street food in the market or hotdogs in the Intercontinental Hotel in the posh side of town.

A media team entered and set up close to our table. It was ‘David Frost’ interviewing ‘George Foreman’ for the television cameras. Foreman had already been discarded by black people as a coconut, a choc ice, an Uncle Tom, but he was very much the favourite to

win this fight against a much older Ali. A lot of shouting was going on around the corner. The nation’s new president was making a speech to a mixed crowd.

More noise emanated from elsewhere, followed by ‘Ali, boma ye! Ali, boma ye! Ali, boma ye!’ The boxing legend was out meeting the poor people and they were chanting ‘boma ye!’ (Kill him!). Muhammed had already won the popularity vote before he had left the United States; this was just compounding is status.

Foreman had received a cut in training so the bout was put back five weeks, but the media circus had to continue so a major festival was organised by Don King, who was promoting the fight. James Brown, Bill Withers, BB King, Etta James, Sister Sledge, The Pointer Sisters and many more entertained a very appreciative crowd, and most of those acts were brought back to life for Rumble in the Jungle - Rematch.

To make this experience work you

During rehearsals, Elaine (Kristin Scott Thomas) is harassed by her ex who stands menacingly outside her flat for hours, sends letters that turn from romantic to threatening. Finally, when she returns home with opening night reviews that hail her as ‘Magnificent’, ‘Spellbinding’ and a ‘Force of nature’ she finds her beloved songbirds cold and strangled on the floor.

And there the question was posed: Were the birds set free from a life in a cage by being killed?

Taking that as a ‘You’ll be next’ warning, Elaine packs up and leaves for the West Country where she stays incognito for 30 years. Some speculators say it was stage fright that sent her into hiding; others whisper murder…

While there, Elaine moves in to an old dilapidated house that is gradually getting closer to the eroding cliff edge, gets a job

in the village shop, takes a swim in the sea every day and befriends her neighbour Chris(Sara Powell). She also spends time rehearsing what would be her comeback show when Clive eventually dies. It is an over the top ‘extravaganza’ that has us - and them - in fits.

One day Clive does die, so Elaine surprises her agent with a call saying she is ready to return to her first love - the stage.

Her agent, however, contacts Lilith, a film development company who send down ambitious Kate (Lily James) to get the full story, with the firm’s agenda being that Elaine is batty and lying about the legendary film director killing her birds.

Kate, though, is married to Greg (James Corrigan), a famous, but controlling, film director who travels the world making films while she brings up their young child and tries to keep a career going. So it doesn’t take Kate long to fall in love with the house, the sea, the quality of life and, perhaps, Chris the neighbour, and after spending a little time there, wants her company to do right by Elaine.

It also doesn’t take long for Greg to turn up unannounced to demand Kate’s return.

She returns home with him.

This is very much a play about trapped women where #metoo gets a few mentions, but it is Greg who is the most honest. He virtual signals for all the right causes but beneath all that he reveals

The young Elaine Daly is discovered doing Panto and invited to the Royal Shakespeare Company where she became a big hit. First-half goals do damage at Champion Hill

duLWiCh haMLET couldn’t keep their recent good run going as they lost 2-0 to lewes in the first round of the Fa Trophy last weekend.

First-half goals from Bradley Pritchard and Tommy Wood gave Lewes victory against their Isthmian League Premier Division rivals to leave the majority of the 2,745 crowd disappointed.

Hakan Hayrettin’s side were unbeaten in three league games ahead of the fixture and the Hamlet manager brought Preston Edwards into his lineup following the goalkeeper’s return to the club last month.

It was a strong team as the hosts aimed to maintain their momentum from their league run.

Dulwich started well and Luke Wanadio fired just wide from the edge of the box in the first minute.

Despite the early home pressure, it was the visitors who took the lead eleven minutes in. Edwards brilliantly saved from Tommy Wood but the ball landed at Pritchard’s feet and he slotted in.

The Rooks’ former Hamlet defender Ronnie Vint headed over from a corner on 21 minutes. Two minutes later, another ex-Dulwich player, Deon Moore, crossed from the left and Chris Whelpdale’s effort was blocked.

The Hamlet had a chance to level in the 25th minute but Jerome BinnomWilliams’ shot was saved by Nathan Harvey.

The home side were the width of the crossbar from an equaliser a minute later as Wanadio was denied.

Chris Whitewood showcased his talent and determination as he defeated his London Military ABC opponent at Balham Boxing Club.

Whitewood’s journey in the sport began at the age of ten when he first picked up his gloves at the Marvels Lane Boxing Club in Grove Park.

With raw talent and determination, he quickly made a name for himself on the local boxing scene. His passion for the sport led him to the Dwaynamix gym in Brixton, where he honed his skills and dreamed of reaching new heights.

Like many athletes, Whitewood faced challenges posed by the Covid lockdowns but, undeterred by setbacks, he continued to pursue his dreams and made a crucial move to the renowned Honour & Glory gym in Kidbrooke. There, he joined their prestigious seniors amateur boxing programme, a decision that would ultimately lead him to victory.

Commenting on his win, the 22-year-old scaffolder said: “I've dedicated my life to boxing, and this victory is just the beginning of what I hope to achieve.

“I’m honoured and excited to represent my community and look forward to the challenges ahead on my journey to becoming a professional boxing champion.”

Whitewood is also busy outside the ring. He has a dedicated following of over 40,000 fans on TikTok, where

Chelsea's dismal Stamford Bridge form is ‘something we need to fix’ says boss

By John Kelly MAURICIO POCHETTINO insists he is not “worried” but “feels the responsibility to find the solution” as Chelsea’s dismal form at Stamford Bridge continued with a 2-0 defeat against west London rivals Brentford last weekend.

The Blues had their chances but secondhalf goals from Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbuemo gave Thomas Frank’s side the points to move them a place and a point above Chelsea into tenth place in the Premier League table.

“It’s something we need to fix,” Pochettino said when asked about the side’s home form, with August’s 3-0 win over Luton Town their only one in their last thirteen league games.

“I don’t think I’m worried but we feel the responsibility and we will try to find the solution. The key is to create a good atmosphere.

“You need the right way between the fans and the team. The team need to translate the idea of the fans so they can trust them.

It works both ways. That is time. We have talented players but we are a new team. We are competing but we are missing things.

“You sense the mood changes when we concede. We need to build trust.

“Sometimes you have to accept the game is going in a direction you don’t want. You need to be calm in this moment, and have the character to say, “Okay, it’s in a different direction but we are mature enough to play the way we should’. We will work on it.”

Defender Levi Colwill feels Chelsea haven’t had a lot of luck at home this season.

“We’re very frustrated. In the first half we

completely dominated and we had a good few chances to score. We should have been in front at half-time and, realistically, we should have put the game to bed. Credit to Brentford, they did their thing and stuck to their gameplan of sitting in. Then when they had the opportunity at the other end, they took it.

“There have been a few games like that now and it’s very frustrating. It’s tough to take and when you are creating chances but not scoring, you always have that feeling at the back of your head that they could get a chance and nick something.

“You have to stay switched on but unfortunately Brentford got in and put their chances away to get the win. We’re really disappointed with the outcome of the game but all we can do is learn from this, improve and build on this. We’ve got a tough run of fixtures coming up but hopefully we can pick up some points.

England international Colwill added: “We know we can improve but I also think we need a little bit of luck on our side. It was similar against Arsenal. Although we scored two goals, we missed a few chances and that’s another game we probably should have won, and we’d be much better off points-wise.

“We didn’t take our chances, Brentford did and we just didn’t quite have the rub of the green. I think if we played them tomorrow we’d beat them, but unfortunately football doesn’t work like that and it’s all about how you perform on the day.”

Chelsea play another London derby on Monday (November 6) away at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Bees also have a London derby at home to West Ham United on Saturday.

Eagles boss sees positives despite Tottenham defeat

ROY HODGSON was encouraged by Crystal Palace’s performance despite the Eagles losing 2-1 to Premier League table-toppers Tottenham Hotspur at Selhurst Park last Friday night.

After an even first half, Ange Postecoglu’s Spurs took a 53rd-minute lead when Joel Ward inadvertently diverted in James Maddison’s cross.

The visitors doubled their advantage 66 minutes in through Son Heung-min before Jordan Ayew fired home in the 94th minute but the hosts couldn’t find an

equaliser.

Tottenham moved five points clear at the top of the table before that lead was reduced to two points following the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.

Palace are in thirteenth place.

“I thought our first-half performance was very good. I thought we gave them a good game throughout. We were playing against a good team,” Hodgson said.

“Unfortunately, at two goals to nil down, it becomes very, very difficult. We took some chances. We put some players on the field who haven’t played much for us and had a look at them and, to be fair, even right to the end, the team was fighting.

“We scored a late goal, had lots of corner-kicks and were pressing so I’m not disappointed in the team’s performance at all, not really, but I am disappointed of course in the result.

“I thought at half-time that, in the second half, if we could have done that again all through the second half, we’d have had a result from the game.

“I trust the team and I trust the players. I did think our structure in the first half was very good. We made life very difficult for Tottenham and asked questions of them, so at half-time we were very satisfied.

“When that first goal goes in with all their ability to keep possession, and wanting to

make some changes, that unfortunately changed things a bit, but that’s what we need to do at the moment because we are still without at least two players who I think could help us become a better team.

“I don’t think we could have done more than we did against them because they were determined not to let us do what we wanted to do.

“We were playing against a team who were top of the league, they were two goals to nil up, and we were trying. We wanted it and we want to do the right things, but they’re not top of the league for nothing.

“They have very, very good players,

they’re organised defensively and what’s more, with two goals to nil lead, it was very easy for them to take all the time in the world on the ball and we were the ones trying to chase and hurry them.

“I think [the] performance was very different to the one last week [in the 4-0 defeat at Newcastle United]. There were a lot of very encouraging things to see in this performance and my overriding feeling at the moment is that it was unfortunate that we couldn’t build on the first half, because of the unfortunate own-goal which put us one-nil down. “ Palace play Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.

The nineteen-year-old has made a solid start to life at Millwall after joining on loan from Arsenal in August, starting nine of the eleven games since his arrival.

The wing-back has impressed fans with his athleticism and dribbling skills but he's not yet satisfied and is working non-stop to improve every element of his game.

Luckily for Norton-Cuffy, his lives very close to the Lions' Calmont Road training ground in Bromley and is using the base to push himself as far as he can go.

He told our paper: "Playing well is the most important thing for me.

I feel like I've come in and had good performances so far. Still a lot to improve on and I do want to get my goals and assists up. I feel like I have to take the onus on goals and assists.

"I need to put the balls into better areas, I need to tune that part of the game really. I have put balls in good areas at times but it's on me to really start hitting those targets. "[The proximity to the training

ground] is perfect for me as I can wake up in the morning, get something to eat at home, get ready for my day and then stay as long as I want, really. I don't have to think about rushing back.

I can work on what I have to work on here and it's basically my second home now. I can work on things here, go home, relax and get ready for it again next day. So it's perfect."

Norton-Cuffy was deployed in a right midfield position in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Watford, higher up the pitch than what's been used to this season.

And he is keen to start firing more efforts at opposition keepers to help turbocharge goal-shy Millwall's

attack.

He said: "I feel like it's time to just let it go. In training I feel like my finishing is pretty good but in games I feel like there's times that I look to pass and look to slip people in where I could take a shot on for myself. So it's the decision-making in the final third that I could tune a bit and hopefully get more goals.

"I really dissect the games and go through it. I have someone I work with away from the club and we go through my clips pretty much once every week or once every two weeks and we just look on bits I can improve on. That's going to help me but at the end of the day that's going to help the team as

"I've moved to Bromley now with my missus and she's enjoying it. My family can come down to watch a lot of the games, they're there every week.

"Life at Millwall is good. I feel like the fans have taken to me quite well and I'm just really enjoying it."

Appleton's Charlton not spooked by late Halloween scare

CharLTon SurvivEd a late Halloween scare to seal a first away league win of the season in Tuesday night’s 3-2 success at Wigan.

The Addicks suffered an early setback when Panutche Camara was forced off with a hamstring injury and replaced by Tyreece Campbell.

It didn’t stop the visitors racing into a 3-0 lead before the break, including a brace from top-scorer Alfie May, who took his tally for the campaign to eleven.

First, the striker was ideally placed to bundle home the rebound after Latics

keeper Sam Tickle parried out his 21stminute header before the 30-year-old drilled a low shot into the right corner from the edge of the box ten minutes later.

Corey Blackett-Taylor added a third two minutes before the break as the home side were booed off at half-time.

Michael Appleton replaced Miles Leaburn and Louie Watson with Slobodan Tedic and Charlie Kirk as the clock ticked down.

quEEnS parK rangers have appointed Martí Cifuentes as their new head coach following the sacking of gareth ainsworth.

Spaniard Cifuentes, 41, arrived this week from Swedish club Hammerby IF, who are part-owned by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Cifuentes leaves Hammarby in sixth place in the Swedish Allsvenskan table with two games left. He has also managed in the top flights in Norway and Denmark after having a coaching placement at Millwall.

QPR chief executive Lee Hoos said: “We are delighted to bring Martí in and I would firstly like to thank Hammarby for

Ainsworth was asked about his position after the defeat to the Foxes. "I can hold my head up high whether I'm here next week or not, saying I've given absolutely everything every single day,” he said.

"I'm proud to be the manager of this fantastic football club but at the moment we are up against some really good teams, the club has changed over the years and hopefully there's some understanding in the fans.

"If not, no worries. I can always hold my head up high and say I've given everything I could for this club and done the best I possibly could."

Cifuentes previously explained his philosophy in an interview with Sky Sports.

"It was impossible to succeed doing the same thing everywhere,” Cifuentes said.

“You need to understand context and culture. The culture of the club, the city, the history of the club, all this comes into it.

"I don't think you will find a manager in the world who would say no to having the opportunity one day to coach in England. It is special because of the fans, the community, the intensity of the game, the schedule, the amount of historical clubs."
