Bexley Council has revealed it is facing £73million in unpaid debt, with more than £2.6m of that sum from parking charges over the past two years.

The figure comes from an agenda report for a general purposes and audit committee meeting for Bexley Council on September 28.

Council documents said the debt from parking charges had recently grown due to the increased number of fines being issued as well as a backlog of appeals.

Officers cited low resources as the reason for the delay in payments being received, as well as an IT error which stopped cases progressing to enforcement agents.

The difficulty in receiving payments reportedly led to the turnaround time of

temporary accommodation rents, council tax, business rates and housing benefit overpayments.

"The council undertakes recovery action where debts are not paid following legislative guidance and this will vary depending on the type of debt and in some cases individual circumstances of the debtor.”

Other sources of the council’s sum of owed debt included overpayments of housing benefits. The council was cited as being owed £7.5m due to overpayments from the past two years, which was reportedly due to claimants not telling the authority about changes in their personal circumstances quickly enough.

Bexley Council’s debt recovery board meets monthly to find methods to improve debt recovery and reduce the level of write-offs.

Work had also been done to arrange payments from bodies owing money to the council, including the NHS and Greater London Authority.

By Robert Firth Local Democracy Reporter Labour have won a South London council by-election which was called after the previous councillor died.

The party’s candidate for Vauxhall, Tom Swaine-Jameson, finished in first place with 595 votes (42 per cent).

The by-election, which took place on Thursday (October 5), was called after former Vauxhall Labour councillor Liam Jarnecki died of cancer in August.

The Liberal Democrat candidate Fareed Alderechi finished second with 395 votes (28 per cent) and the Green Party’s candidate Jacqueline Rose Bond finished in third with 256 votes (18 per cent).

Swaine-Jameson, who is a university lecturer and trustee of a local arts equalities charity, joins two other Labour councillors, Isla Wrathmell and Martin Bailey, in representing the area.

The local Labour Party promised to help residents with housing repairs, antisocial behaviour and overcrowded accommodation in a leaflet distributed during the campaign.

Conservative candidate Lee Rotherham, a Brexit-supporting historian, finished in fourth place with 160 votes (11 per cent).

Just over a fifth (22.5 per cent) of Vauxhall residents cast their vote in the by-election.

Labour-run Lambeth Council is made up of 63 councillors. Of those elected, 58 are from Labour, three are Liberal Democrats and two are from the Green Party.

A South London council is reportedly owed more than £2.6 million in debt due to unpaid parking charges.

The report said that 29,095 parking charges had been issued between April and July this year, with fifteen per cent of the fines in this period remaining unpaid by the end of July.

It added that 76,465 parking fines were issued in the 2022/23 financial year overall, and that over £650,000 of parking debt had already been written off in the current financial year.

The majority of the council’s overall debt it was owed was attributed to council tax, with £40.5m being cited as debt outstanding and over half of this sum being over two years old.

Recent increases to the debt in the past year were attributed to increased council tax charges equating to a higher value for arrears.

By Kevin Quinn A man has been charged with the murder of a Keelen Morris Wong, who was stabbed in Brixton.

By Isabel Ramirez The filming for a new crime series caused some panic at the weekend in Bermondsey, including one passer-by who reported the convincing set ‘looked like a real incident.’

Steve Cornish, a Rotherhithe resident, said he was driving along on Sunday 8 October and spotted the unusual sight down Spa Road, near where it meets Grange Road.

He described what appeared to be a bus with its roof blown off – surrounded by debris.

“I quickly put the brakes on,” he told us. “I thought it was a major incident.”

He said he got out of his car and walked towards the park where he saw a man in a high-vis Southwark Council jacket.

“I asked what was going on and he said there was no need for alarm – that it was a film set.”

Steve commented on the ‘lack of signage’ to say it was a set. “They could have put signs up. There were only road diversion signs but it wouldn’t have scared me so much if I’d known. It

looked so real.”

Like Steve, others went to social media to share their initial panic.

One Twitter user wrote: “Saw this on the way to local shops this afternoon, must admit it did make me a little panicked until I realised it was a film set.”

Someone else on Facebook was also duped and posted a photo of the scene with the caption: “Bus blew up down Spa Road.”

But some people had answers, claiming they had been told filming would be taking place – like Bell Zeki, the owner of a cafe in Bermondsey Spa Gardens.

Asked what they were filming for, a Disney+ spokesperson said: “Disney+ were filming a new series “Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes.”

They assured production is adhering to all regulations, and told us all local residents and businesses surrounding the site were notified in advance of filming through letter drops.

A Southwark Council spokesperson, added: “We are sorry for any initial distress caused to some residents by the film scene on Spa Road.

“We took measures to ensure that the film company notified residents weeks ahead of filming and stationed marshals onsite to provide assurances and minimise any disturbances.

“On the day, officers were onsite and quickly advised that additional signage was needed and placement improved to avoid confusion. As a result, the film company promptly moved signage to address any blind spots.”

Currently, no details are available regarding the dates of release.

He explained: "Before any work like this gets carried out that involves digging into the ground - they have to assess the threat level of the place. It's been worked out that about ten per cent of all bombs that were dropped or fired, failed to go off."

Asked about the likelihood of them

finding another one in the area, he said there was simply no way of knowing commenting: "That could have been a one-off thing that was imported from another area.

"However," he continued, "what we do have to do now we have found this here, is make sure that every piece of intrusive work is now checked by an expert."

We also asked Mr Wilkin how likely it was for a bomb of that age to be dangerous this many years later.

He responded, "Generally, an ordnance that was dropped or fired like this one can become corroded which means the part that initiates the device can seize up. It becomes rusty.

"People have been walking over it and driving over it for 70-80 years and there was probably no risk of that ever going off," he said, "because there's enough hard-standing above it that was likely to set it off.

"I handled it so there was nothing in it that gave me cause for concern.

"Some things can be more volatile this was not one of those times. This was a very small item - so it had obviously been fired up in the air and dropped back down again."

The bomb was taken away in an ammo case by the bomb disposal team to be disposed of later on and the roads are back open again.

An enquiry has been put to the police regarding the incident.

World War Two bomb found on residential street in Bermondsey

By Isabel Ramirez Residents and businesses were evacuated after a World War Two bomb was discovered on a residential street in Bermondsey.

At around 11 am on Monday 9 October, workmen from Thames Water discovered the bomb, which was deemed by an expert not to be dangerous, when doing work on Beatrice Road, a residential area off the Blue shopping area of Southwark Park Road in Bermondsey.

At the scene Ritchie Wilkin, EOD Unexploded Ordnance Consultant, who was brought in to assess the danger, explained that an evacuation followed 'solely as a precaution.'

He told us: "During these Thames Water workers' excavations this morning, they scratched around and thought they saw something."

Mr Wilkin said his job was to be there just in case and provide cover if anything was found. This area in particular has a risk given it was bombed heavily during the Second World War. "We saw the item and identified it was something from the World War Two era," he said. "We worked out it was fairly safe to move so we picked it up out of the hole and called the police."

team arrived at the scene ten minutes later.

"They made the same assessment we'd made - that it was safe. But as a precaution, everyone was evacuated within a 100-metre radius purely for safety reasons."

He explained the police went around and did door-to-door knocks 'within thirty minutes of the finding' - including residents living in the houses on Beatrice Road and businesses on Southwark Park Road. But he added that it was over

was a Brazilian man killed in 2005 by Met Police officers at Stockwell station on the London Underground after being wrongly deemed one of the people involved in a failed bombing attempt, following those of the 7th July (the 7/7 bombings).

We approached the film company for comment following concerns over a ‘lack of signage’.

The Disney+ spokesperson said: “We worked closely with TFL, the police and the local council to ensure filming regulations were meticulously followed, with film signage and barriers in place, alongside marshals and security canvassing the area to make members of the public and local residents aware that filming was taking place.”

The 22-year-old was stabbed on Coldharbour Lane at 4.44pm last Tuesday, October 3. Police and paramedics attended but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Keelen's next of kin were aware and were being supported by specially trained officers.

19.9.00) from Merton, appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Saturday, where he also faced a charge of possessing an offensive weapon.

He was remanded into custody until his next appearance at the Old Bailey on Tuesday.

A fifteen-year-old boy was arrested on 5 October on suspicion of murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

He has been bailed, pending further inquiries, to a date in early January.

Another fifteen-year-old boy was arrested on 6 October on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Local Democracy Reporter PLAnS for a new park, bigger than a football pitch, a new tesco and 384 of homes at Canada Water were approved by Southwark councillors on last week.

The new homes would be built across five buildings arranged around the park on a plot of land currently occupied by an Odeon cinema, Hollywood Bowl, Pizza Hut and parking spaces on the Surrey Quays leisure park.

The proposals were approved unanimously by a council planning committee on Tuesday, October 3, made up of four Labour councillors and one Liberal Democrat. But speaking at the meeting, ex-docker and local resident Barry Duckett blasted developer British Land for failing to adequately reference the history of Canada Dock in the park’s design.

He said: “There’s nothing in there depicting the history of this area. […] When you look at the planning permission that’s been granted so far and look at Canada Water, that’s become a puddle with a wonderful deck going through it.

“There’s a big past here but it’s not in this park… Until we start realising there is a history I’m afraid it’s just gone, we’re gone. We may as well not

be in it. […] Once you’ve signed this off you’ve signed away the past because there’s nothing there to depict the past.”

Mr Duckett went on to brand developer British Land’s attempts to incorporate the dock’s history into the proposed park “laughable,” adding that he had spent three hours speaking with staff from the company about ways to include references to Canada Dock in the plans.

Arianna Ricciotti from British Land said the company had consulted with “numerous local groups” about the design of the park and had incorporated more of the site’s history into the plans based on the feedback.

These references included “marking the former dock head with inscriptions, and using the dock as a reference for informal play features,” she added.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, chair of the planning committee, said he was “impressed” that play equipment in the planned park referenced the history of the nearby Printworks building, but added it would be “good to see more of the dock’s legacy” in the design as well.

In response to these concerns, councillors agreed to add a condition to the plans about including features in the park that referenced the history of the docks.

The plans include 532 basement parking spaces for customers of the supermarket and those visiting the wider Canada Water area.

The five blocks of flats surrounding the park will range from six to 30 storeys. Of the 384 planned homes, 89 will be available at the cheapest social rents and a further 45 will be shared ownership homes, where a person

buys a share of a property and pays rent on the remaining amount. The remaining homes will be sold privately at market rates.

British Land’s planning advisor said the company was struggling to find a company to run a cinema on the site but was continuing its search for a new operator.

The Canada Water Masterplan will create up to 3,000 new homes, offices for 20,000 workers and a new town centre for the area.

Canada Dock was built in 1876 and took its name from the country of origin of much of the cargo on board ships making use of the dock. By the 1980s, most of the dock had been filled in, with the bulk of the site covered by Surrey Quays shopping centre.

By Harrison Galliven Local Democracy Reporter Croydon CounCiL has confirmed that all but one of their ten new healthy school streets (hSS) will become permanent, banning all non-permitted vehicles entry during the busy school run hours.

From April 2022, the council imposed ten experimental traffic orders across the borough to tackle air pollution near schools and encourage more parents and pupils to walk to school.

The experimental orders established distinct school pedestrian zones, which forbid motorised vehicles entering between 8am and 9am and again between 2pm and 4pm on school days during the academic year.

Exemptions were made for public

service and liveried vehicles, as well as those with permits and a valid blue badge.

Anyone without a permit who drives down a school street during the designated times faces a £60 fine.

Residents, parents and schools were given a six-month consultation period, in which feedback and objections to the scheme could be given.

Respondents were required to indicate their support for the zone and its impact both less than 100m and more than 100m outside of it.

Despite the overwhelming support shown from nine schools, Keston Primary School, in Coulsdon, was the only school to reject the introduction of a permanent HSS on Keston Avenue.

Residents and parents of children at Keston gave significant objections to the scheme due to the excess displaced

traffic it caused to the nearby area.

The school itself lodged a significant complaint about the scheme.

Despite 100 per cent support from Keston respondents living inside the zone, respondents less than 100m outside of it only gave twelve per cent support. The official report indicates this lack of approval came from residents on the nearby Court Avenue, where, according to residents: ‘“we have seen recorded traffic volumes increase in the AM Peak period.”

Keston’s current experimental traffic order will be withdrawn October 21, while all other HSS will remain permanent from today onward.

Similar schemes have been rolled out across the country after a push from the central government to reduce congestion and traffic related injuries near schools.

structure could be replaced. These allow the bridge to expand and contract during hot and icy spells of weather. Without this ability, the council said, the bridge would sustain damage and become unsafe for traffic.

The works also included waterproofing the bridge deck to prevent internal corrosion and resurfacing the carriageway.

Pedestrians were still able to cross the bridge during the works, while cyclists had to dismount and wheel their bikes across.

The council said it plans to introduce a new segregated northbound cycle lane on the bridge to offer greater protection to cyclists as they cross the river, which would be a separate project.

Labour councillor Jenny Yates, cabinet member for transport, said: “This was a

complex and challenging set of repairs which were vitally important if the bridge was to remain in safe working condition.

“I’m absolutely delighted that we have got the job done on time and on budget.

"We understand the closure to traffic has caused disruption and we’d like to apologise for the inconvenience it’s caused but these repairs were absolutely essential and I’m really pleased we have completed the task when we said we would.

"I’d also like to pay tribute to the hardworking team of council engineers and contractors who have all done an excellent job in seeing this scheme through to a successful conclusion.”

The council said much of the scaffolding and other equipment needed for the repairs will remain in place for some time as it will take a while to dismantle.

Croydon itself already had fourteen permanent HSS active in the borough prior to this consultation.

This new wave of HSS was of particular importance to both the council, considering the borough’s statistics around the prevalence of air pollution in Croydon.

According to the Director of Public Health’s annual report 2017, ‘Croydon has the highest rate of hospital admissions for childhood (0-9 years) asthma and the third-highest number of asthma deaths in London.’

It also noted: “205 premature deaths in Croydon are linked to air pollution, and that there are further health concerns associated with 40 per cent of children and 60 per cent of adults in Croydon being overweight.”

At the full cabinet meeting, Mayor Jason Perry approved the

recommendation to make nine of the HSS’s permanent. Speaking to the cabinet, he said: “There was a definite reduction in traffic related issues to all streets but those in Keston.”

This scheme forms part of Perry’s wider Business Plan to boost Croydon’s post covid recovery and reduce congestion in the borough. It also meets the objectives set out in the Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy.

The list of schools due to see their HSS made permanent includes Ecclestone Primary School, St Thomas Becket Catholic Primary School, Harris Primary Academy Haling Park, Harris Primary Academy Croydon, Downsview Primary School, Christ Church CofE Primary School, Oasis Academy Ryelands, Ridgeway Primary School and St Joseph’s Catholic Junior School.

Wandsworth Bridge reopens after shutting for 10 weeks

Wandsworth Bridge, which is 83 years old, reopened in both directions on Sunday night, October 1.

The bridge, which connects Wandsworth and Fulham, closed on July 24 after checks revealed some of its weight-bearing parts needed to be replaced.

Wandsworth Council carried out the repairs to prevent longer-term closures of the bridge and other future restrictions.

By Isabel Ramirez A mother of five, who lives on the Aylesbury estate, says she found cockroaches in her kids' cereal and even a dead mouse, as she recounts nine years of nightmare infestations.

Fatmata Koroma, 34, said the nightmare began shortly after she moved into her Taplow block residence in 2014.

According to her, "There were always cockroach infestations and mice, especially in winter when they're looking for somewhere warm to nest."

With five young children, Fatmata added: "The kids are so scared - they sleep in my bed most nights."

Despite being the one speaking out, she claims the problem is not limited to her home but affects the entire Taplow block.

Fatmata explained that pest control efforts initiated by the council consistently fail to provide any lasting solution. "They don't treat the whole block, so the pests keep coming back.

"I keep finding cockroaches everywhere - all over the beds every day. They're even in my kids' cereal. I recently found a dead mouse in there too.

"I'm so tired of this."

Last year, she told us, a mouse chewed through an electric cooker cable, sparking a fire in their home.

She said the issues don't stop there: "We have also had a lot of problems with the boiler. We had no heating the whole winter last year.

"The engineers refused to come and fix the heating whilst there were infestations," she claimed.

Mum of five shares nine-year ordeal of infestations on Aylesbury Estate In 2019, Fatmata was taken to court by Southwark Council due to rent arrears.

On this, she explained the infestation problem has led to her having to replace lots of items in the home and heat it when there were issues with the boiler: "It gets very expensive."

Despite a court ruling in her favour, with the council being ordered to pay her compensation and do repairs, she told us the conditions have not significantly improved.

As a part-time NHS maternity support worker, Fatmata said she's anxious about potentially carrying cockroach eggs into her workplace and said she is on antidepressants due to the stress.

The Aylesbury Estate is currently undergoing regeneration, with some blocks already rebuilt. However, Fatmata’s block falls under phase three, and there is uncertainty about when the necessary renovations will begin.

Fatmata said: "It seems like the council has just neglected the estate because they know it's going to be knocked down."

This prolonged wait exacerbates the family's suffering, leaving them in a state of dread, 'especially with winter approaching,' Fatmata commented.

"How long do they expect us to live in these conditions," she said.

Fatmata highlighted the difficulty of getting comprehensive treatment - which

involves spraying the whole house - due to the presence of her children: "The pest control officers have always refused to do it before."

However, since the story went public last week, she said the council finally allowed a full treatment.

We asked the council why it had taken so long to sort out.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for homes, communities and finance, said: “It is not acceptable for anyone to have to live with pests inside their property, and the footage taken by the tenant is horrifying.

"We do all that we can to prevent pests on Aylesbury Estate with regular

treatments of both the whole blocks and individual flats when needed.

"Both housing and pest control officers are on site on the estate almost every day and I am sorry if we have not responded quickly enough to the tenant about this matter on this occasion.

"We will treat the tenant’s property as a matter of urgency, which we hope will resolve the problem.”

While they claim regular pest control is conducted in communal areas, Fatmata disputes this, stating it hasn't happened since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Fatmata is currently on the bidding list to move, as she desperately tries to find a place of safety for her family.

elsie celeBrates 100th Birthday with tales of naZi planes and a mysterious soldier artist

By Herbie Russell 100-YEAR-OLD ELSIE Jane hall spent her birthday recounting tales of WWii evacuation and hiding from nazi planes last week.

She celebrated the milestone with friends, family and the Mayor of Southwark at the Tower Bridge Care Home in Bermondsey on Wednesday, October 4.

Born in Battersea in 1923, she had eight siblings including five sisters and three brothers.

She left school aged just fourteen to take up employment as a needleworker repairing and making clothes on Saville Row. “It was very classy that place. There were a lot of repairs. I enjoyed it - it was quite interesting work,” she said.

She learned skills there she kept for the rest of her life and would make

her two sons’ school uniforms from scratch.

But after WWII broke out in the summer of 1939, like 1.5 million others, she was evacuated to the countryside and found herself in Cambridge.

“It was a bit of upheaval. You had to share a bed with somebody else because Cambridge isn’t a very big place! It was very quiet. I enjoyed it but I didn’t enjoy the war!”

She took up work at Pye Radio, a Cambridge-based electronics manufacturer making important components for radars - which would later prove instrumental in the Allied victory.

Astonishingly, despite moving away from her home in London, Elsie still managed to have a run-in with a Nazi plane.

“One came down very low when I

was on my way to work,” she said.

Elsie jumped for cover but, in hindsight, realises her chosen hideout wouldn’t have offered much protection.

“Stupidly, I dived under the lamppost.

That’s not much cop is it?’”

Elsie still has a memento from her time in Cambridge - an illustrated portrait of herself drawn by a mysterious soldier who signed his name as Harry Dodd.

After the war, she returned to Battersea. Having met her husband Percy, they married and had two boys Carl in 1949 and Bruce in 1953.

Together, the family lived in Surrey Docks but would later move to Galleywall Road, Bermondsey, before settling on Rodney Road, Elephant and Castle.

Their home which was part of the Rockingham Estate where Elsie took

up an active role, regularly advocating for her neighbours.

In 2001, aged 77, she was awarded a Southwark Civic Award for her service to her estate.

Around that time, she also took up work at the canteen in what was then the Rachel McMillan teacher training school but now London South Bank University.

Mayor of Southwark Michael Situ told Elsie: “We still give these out to the most impactful residents so for you to have received this means you would have been so special.”

Her grandson Adam fondly remembers visiting his Elsie as a little boy. He said: “My brother and I used to come down from Buckinghamshire to stay with Nanny.

“I loved Irn-Bru so she would always buy me a bottle of that while my brother liked Sarsaparilla so she

always had a bottle of that when we came.

“We used to love coming up and spending time with her. She was strict but we did get to do lot of things we weren’t allowed to see at home! I think that’s the role of a grandparent - to be the cool, nice one.”

As well as needle-working, Elsie would go on to work as a chef at the Rachel McMillan teacher training school - a building which has cine been swallowed up by London South Bank University (LSBU).

Today, she is the loving greatgrandmother to two boys aged three and five.

Asked what the key to a long life was, she had two pieces of advice: “Be who you want to be” and “be happy”.

But she’s had some help along the way. “My boys have kept me happy,” she said.

To ensure it is completed as quickly as possible the work, being carried out by contractor FM Conway, will continue 24 hours a day, but will 'not generate a lot of noise', with power tools not used between 9 pm and 8 am.

City Bridge Foundation Chairman Giles Shilson said since the bridge opened to mark the millennium, it has become a 'much loved' fixture, but commented that it is 'starting to show its age.'

“The separation layer under the bridge deck has started to degrade," he explained, "which means it’s having an adverse effect on the bridge deck and needs addressing urgently.

“Replacing this layer is a time-

consuming process, meaning we have no option but to close the bridge for three weeks and to work round the clock to get it done as quickly as possible.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience but hope people will understand we do need to do this work, and will see the benefits after we give the bridge a much-needed deep clean that will leave it looking as good as new.”

The bridge will close at 8 am on Saturday 14 October and reopen on Sunday 5 November, or sooner if the work is completed more quickly.

Signed pedestrian diversion routes will be in place via Southwark Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge.

Millennium Bridge has enjoyed a colourful history, initially known as the ‘wobbly bridge’ due to issues when it first opened in 2001.

Millennium Bridge closing for three weeks for repair works

miLLennium bridge will be closed for up to three weeks for round-the-clock maintenance work – and 'a thorough clean.'

The footbridge, which links St. Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London with the Tate Modern on the south bank of the Thames, will close from Saturday 14 October.

It will allow for the replacement of the synthetic membrane which separates the bridge’s steel structure from its aluminium bridge deck.

The bridge is one of five owned and maintained by the 900-year-old charity City Bridge Foundation.

If a Lime bike isn’t parked in a bay users won’t be able to finish their journey and will continue to be charged until they stop in a designated area. We asked Southwark Council if it was pursuing a similar scheme, but they did not respond at time of going to press.

Lime does already have measures to limit the impact of parked e-bikes on pavements, including fines for users who mis-park.

partnership with Southwark Council, as well as 11 other London boroughs.

"Our top priority is delivering long-term solutions that will maintain convenience for our 1.25 million London users, while helping ensure safe and tidy parking to prevent pavement obstructions, particularly for those with access needs.

“We ask all riders to park their bikes in a way that is mindful of other road users and future riders, and those that repeatedly park obstructively will be warned, followed by fines or a ban from Lime’s service.”

Unemployed actor Anthony Morton, 75, is attaching signs to the bikes saying ‘mobile litter bin’ - a reference, he says, to their tendency to attract rubbish in their front baskets.

He says Lime bikes are a “great nuisance” and hopes his crusade will prompt the company to “take responsibility” for the bicycles.

Anthony, who'd spent the day posting signs on bikes around Peckham and Camberwell, said: “You have to go round them and if you’re in a wheelchair or with a buggy they make it very difficult and people don’t think about this.”

He added that Lime should ensure there are designated zones where people can officially leave their bikes.

Anthony said: “Of course, people wouldn’t all [follow the rules] so you’d still get a few but it would be a step in the right direction.”

Some London boroughs have already taken that step. Lewisham Council, for example, is one of several London boroughs that recently announced it was working with Lime to introduce 300 Lime parking bays.

Charlie Brabon, 18, from Byron Drive, Erith, appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court charged with one count of murder on Wednesday, September 27.

Six others have previously been charged in connection with Kai’s murder and the shooting. A trial is scheduled for January 3, 2024.

Police launched their investigation after officers were called to Pembroke Road, Erith, at 8.50pm on Thursday, February 9, to reports of shots fired.

Emergency services discovered Kai suffering from a gunshot injury.

Despite paramedics’ best efforts, he died at the scene.

Enriko Spahiu, 21, of Elmhurst, Belvedere and Jalees Selby-Gangera, 18, of Woodfield Close, Erith were charged on Thursday, March, 9 with murder and attempted murder.

Connor Brooks, 21, of Horsa Road, Erith and Bradlee Reeve, 33, of Chapman Road, Erith were both charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder on Saturday, March 11.

Kai Osibodu, 23, of Riverdale Road, Belvedere was arrested on Friday, 17 March and charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Anthony Wallder, 20, of Eastry Road, Bexley, has been charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

On March 9, a 16-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and a 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

They have both been bailed pending further enquiries.

New temp ice-rink set to be approved

Underbelly Ltd wants to run the pop-up ice rink on Hanover Square in Mayfair from November 4 until January 1, 2024.

Known as Skate West End, it will run from 10am to 10pm from Mondays to Saturdays and 10am to 9.30pm on Sundays, according to Westminster City council documents.

Plans show an elliptical rink surrounding a festive bar that can only be accessed via two pedestrian bridges and marquees which will be adorned with festive festoon lighting.

Skaters will be able to make their way through two arched entrances on either side of the site, which is powered by two “sustainable” HVO generators, according to Underbelly’s agent, Gerald Eve. Underbelly Ltd, which has run outdoor events up and down the country for 20 years, has promised to pass on some of the profits to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Westminster City Council will decide whether to approve the temporary marquee structure during

a committee meeting on October 17.

The application would allow ‘Skate West End’ to return in 2024 and 2025.

So far, the site will consist of two ancillary offices, a store, toilets, and advertising panels roughly three metres in height.

It’s also expected to employ three full-time staff and 20 part-time staff.

Construction is expected to start next Wednesday (October 18) and take just over two weeks to complete.

Pack-down of the temporary ice skating site will start on January 2, 2024, and take nine days.

Westminster City Councillors are set to approve the plans despite concerns from two objectors who say it goes against local policy plans and concerns over the storage of bins, toilets and equipment, which will be located outside 20 Hanover Square.

The council said the event will last two months and provide “less than substantial harm” to the area.

The report read: “The proposal provides a distinctive visitor experience. It will also generate jobs over the holiday season (3 full-time staff, and 20 Part-time).

“It accords with the City Council’s wider ambitions to improve Oxford Street, helping local businesses, providing jobs, and investing in high streets.

Plans for new Aldi approved

By Joe Coughlan Local Democracy Reporter Plans for a new Aldi in South London have been approved, despite locals claiming nearby homes will be ‘suffocated’ in car emissions.

Bromley Council has approved plans for a new Aldi in Farnborough Village in Orpington.

The store, planned for Farnborough Way, will be open from 8am to 10pm from Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

The site will also include parking spaces for 47 cars and 33 bikes.

The application received 218 objections online from locals alongside 233 comments of support.

The plans were discussed at a development control committee meeting for Bromley Council on October 5.

Ann Francis, vice chairman of the Farnborough Village Society, said at the meeting that she was representing hundreds of local residents and that the new supermarket would jeopardise

the future of the village.

She said that the store would turn the area into a shopping destination and cause thousands of drivers to rely on the area’s already strained infrastructure.

Mr Khodabakhsh said that several improvements had been made to the plans for the store since a previous application was rejected in March 2022.

He said the new supermarket was planned to be in the area for a minimum of 20 years and the store is planned to open next year.

He added: “This will benefit all local residents. Overall, the reasons for refusal simply do not stand up.

"In any case, they should be weighed up against the many benefits of the scheme; regenerating a derelict brownfield commercial site, providing accessible choice to local people in a cost of living crisis. If refused, the site will remain derelict. [It will also create] up to 50 new local jobs.”

The development control committee approved the plans for the new supermarket in a 9-6 vote.

By Joe Coughlan Local Democracy Reporter Plans to deliver a new South London neighbourhood with hundreds of new flats have progressed, after a developer purchased the site earlier this month.

London Square has announced they have finalised their purchase of the former Electrobase site in Crayford, Bexley borough, to deliver a set of seven residential tower blocks between six and eight storeys tall.

The site is planned to provide 559 new homes in a £180million project, after London Square purchased the site from Skillcrown and Purelake NewHomes.

The developer said in a statement that the 240 homes in the development will be available for shared ownership and social rent.

The area is also planned to include a new riverside walk along the River Cray and children’s play areas.

The plans were originally approved by Bexley Council at a meeting on April 13, before planning consent was finalised in August.

At the meeting, Conservative Councillor Kurtis Christoforides criticised the placement of many of the scheme’s affordable flats in the eastern block, which reportedly would receive the least natural light.

Cllr Christoforides said: “What this development does then, is just asks us to put all the people that need affordable housing in the least desirable block with terrible light.”

Planning officers said in response that the location of the affordable housing block was not by design.

They also said the project had been designed to provide a series of buildings of a similar height instead of a single tall building.

Robert Lancaster, head of planning for Bexley Council, said at the meeting: “[The eastern block] is the one that’s closest to the town centre and one closest to

amenities, and there’s always a balance of a whole range of factors going into the desirability of property, of which daylight is just one.”

Adam Lawrence, Chief Executive of London Square, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “Our latest acquisition shows our commitment to Greater London to provide much-needed new homes in Crayford.

"This will be our first site where one team will be looking after all customers, whether affordable through Square Roots [the company’s independent housing provider] or private for sale, demonstrating our ethos that we will provide everyone with a high quality home and service, irrespective of tenure.”

He added: “We are delighted that the site now has full planning permission and we will be pressing ahead to deliver an attractive, well-connected place where people will want to live, helping to transform this area of Crayford for the existing local community and businesses.”

New electronic health record system and app for patients and carers Guy’s and st Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital nHs Foundation Trusts have launched a new patient electronic health record system across their hospitals and community services. By Harrison Galliven Local Democracy Reporter Croydon is famous for a number of things. Stormzy, the 50p building, and of course being the former home to one of the UK’s first international airports.

With Croydon Airport’s closure in 1959, the then Surrey council were left with acres of empty runway space to fill on the now Purley Way. In 1967, that space was eventually filled by the first tenants of the Roundshaw Estate.

Now sitting in the borough of Sutton, the Roundshaw Estate houses 10,000 residents on the outskirts of Wallington and South Croydon.

The brutalist high rise flats and antisocial behaviour that characterised the area prior to its regeneration in 2000 meant its residents often had to wrestle with the estate’s bad reputation.

However, Roundshaw is home to a proud community who take issue with this reputation and instead say that living there has improved their lives.

The Roundshaw Community Network (RCN) is the main group behind the rise in Roundshaw pride, and one of its key figureheads is Shen Inalpolat, 42.

On a windy September morning outside her own burger van, Shen told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “I moved here from the bottom of Carshalton, or the nice end as people say. People say to me ‘you chose to go there?!’

“My response is always to say I needed a bigger property and my kids went to school here. If I had the chance to swap now, I wouldn’t.

"I’ve got to know everyone here, whereas I didn’t even know my neighbours at my last property.

“Some people think of Roundshaw as a stepping stone or that people can’t wait to get off it, but for me, it’s been the total opposite. It’s made my life, whereas I probably would have just sat at home otherwise and got a crummy little job.

"Living here has meant I’ve built a business, been part of a community, set up events and community schemes.”

Shen bought her burger van with the support of MVTH, the housing association that is now responsible for all the homes in the estate. She claims that their support for her and others in the community has been encouraging.

She told the LDRS that due to the success of her burger van following covid, that she will soon set up a permanent cafe in The Phoenix Centre opposite.

As well as her business, Shen also runs a mobile food hub for the community.

Working alongside Roundshaw’s permanent food bank, she offers residents free food and provisions provided by local retailers. She said: “I left French sticks out last week and they were gone in fifteen minutes after I put a post up on our community Facebook page.

"I thought that must be some kind of record but it does show that there is still a need for stuff. People still need a lot of help.

“There are still a lot of people who won’t come to the hub because they feel embarrassed but they will walk past and take from here because it’s on their route and there’s no judgement.

"We do have some that raid it but

that’s always going to happen. I will not let anyone go hungry.”

Despite the community support it provides, some residents have expressed frustration in dealing with MVTH, especially when it came to home repairs. One resident told the LDRS: “If you have a problem, you can’t get through to MVTH. If they do respond, you’d be quite lucky. You can’t just walk in to their office like you used to.”

Another local resident added: “I have had a leak in my kitchen and black mould on our ceiling for three months. I have three children and one disabled adult.

"The leak from the ceiling has now meant there’s mould around the floor,

and I can’t have that.

"Metropolitan has come round three times, but it’s never sorted. They just say they haven’t got the part and reschedule. This has been going on for three months now.”

Mum-of-five Holly, 38, said: “I have tried to swap my property for a while now. I’m in a three bed, but they won’t house me in a bigger property because my husband’s work means we are over the cut off point.

"So they say go and look in the private sector. When I do look, no one wants the property, because of the reputation.”

According to Shen, crime still does seem to be an issue in the area, although she believes it is a problem

not specific to Roundshaw.

According to recent data published by the Met Police, Roundshaw’s crime rate is just over average when compared to the rest of the borough.

Furthermore, Sutton remains one of the top five safest boroughs in the capital.

Shen added: “We do have our problems here. Ghere was a local guy running around with a machete, but what happens on Roundshaw stays on Roundshaw.

"There’s not many police on walking patrols round the estate, but there are a lot of cars and vans that come through. When they do come through, they try to talk to you, and they do make an effort.”

Kyra Annacy, 35 told the LDRS: “We do talk to the police, but things tend to be sorted out between us because we live here, and we have to deal with it.

"There’s no worse that goes on here than there does anywhere else. We all look out for each other, it’s like Coronation Street up here.

"If someone needs something, there’s always there to look out for you. But at the same time, we were not in each other’s pockets.”

Being a largely self-contained estate on the fringes of both Sutton and Croydon, Roundshaw relies heavily on its bus services.

Kyra told the LDRS: “Roundshaw’s well-connected, but we had to fight to

"It runs from West Croydon to Morden, it’s a long route, but it runs late. At one point we lost the 455 and the 154 due to the buses colliding into the corner of Sandy Lane just outside of Wallington. The council just stopped running it.

“A lot of children on this estate go to Oaks School, which means you had to get 154.

"Everyone around here gets the bus.

The nearest station is Wallington or Morden, so when they take away a bus route we really notice. Especially the many children on the estate.

"We had to do lots of appeals and got our local MP involved. Mainly it’s just

Facebook though, people argued to bring it back on there.”

Another key member of the community, Pioneer Vicar David Atkinson, also praised Roundshaw’s strong community spirit.

Speaking to the LDRS outside of St Paul’s Church, one of his community hubs, he told the LDRS: “My family have been here for three years now.

The reason a place like this separates itself from anywhere in London is that it has a genuine community.

"My kids always know they’ve got other kids living next door if they want a kick about. You often hear, that’s what used to happen in the 50s, but that still happens in a place like this.”

He joked: “You see the same people, and we look out for each other. There are also challenges with that though, if you have a fight with someone you have to see them every day.”

The force of Roundshaw’s community spirit is best demonstrated in the seriousness in which they take their local events.

As well as the recently refurbished The Phoenix Centre, the estate has a large playing field and backs onto the sprawling Roundshaw downs, which offer an impressive vista of nearby Croydon town centre.

Shen said: “One thing that shocked me when I came here eight years ago was Roundshaw’s Halloween and fireworks night.

"It was like America. I had never seen anything like it. There’s a long row of houses that club in and decorate their houses for the kids to enjoy. There’s even a lady around here that decorates her house like the Hansel and Gretel trail and lets children walk around for free.

“Halloween goes on until about 10pm here. It’s done in such a nice way. It’s not just that, though, we see it in the street parties we had through lockdown as well.

"We do summer fairs and Christmas fairs at The Phoenix Centre that get massive turn outs. About 3,000 people each year. One year we even had the local MP, Elliot Colburn, doing the char char slide.

"These events have given people an excuse to get back out after Covid and learn more about their area.

“Roundshaw Downs also has events there occasionally. They even have cows there that graze from December to February, and you can sit there and see Wembley Stadium on a clear day.

"We need people to come here on a more regular basis, so they don’t think that it was just Roundshaw people on their best behaviour.

"If people could actually spend a bit more time up here, they’d see that actually it’s not nearly that bad.”

When approached for comment, MTVH said: “We want to make it easy and simple for residents to contact us and have many ways of getting in touch.

"The MTVH office at Roundshaw is fully open, five days per week, and has been since February 2022.

Residents can either walk-in or book an appointment in advance.”

“Our online easy access forms are a quick and simple way to send us a message about neighbourhood concerns, estate maintenance, or repairs.

"On MTVH online residents can request and track repairs and perform a number of other functions through a personal account 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

"Our phone lines are open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday with emergency support available 24 hours a day. We operate a free call back feature.

“Roundshaw is one of the largest estates MTVH manages. Given its size, our property services team regularly visit Roundshaw to listen to any resident concerns and help address any issues.

"As well as managing and maintaining the properties on the estate, our team based in Roundshaw play a big role in the local community.

We work hard to support residents with different types of tenancy support, wellbeing initiatives, run a community centre, provide support with the cost of living, and organise a food bank.

“Our team focuses on listening to residents and addressing the issues that matter to them most. The team works holistically with residents to impact not only their current quality of life, but also their longer-term goals and aspirations as individuals and communities.

"All Roundshaw residents are also invited to attend our monthly drop-in hub at the local leisure centre. This is attended by our Property team should residents wish to raise any issues.

Roundshaw’s also has a dedicated local surveyor for the estate.

“Ensuring we are connected and listening to our residents is absolutely critical to our work at MTVH, and one way we do this at Roundshaw is through a monthly community poll, which has been signed up for by over 200 residents.

"This survey is sent to residents to understand what is most important to them and to inform MTVH on how to best support residents. The Resident Connectors then follow these questions up with phone calls to residents, offering person-centred one-to-one support to those who need it most.

“This runs alongside a ‘You Said, We Did’ report. The report was built on listening to residents’ concerns and thoughts, which MTVH colleagues then used to address the issues that mattered to residents most.”

Far Far Away at the Elephant & Castle The Foreigners’ Panto, written and directed by Shani Erez, makes its world premiere at BOLD Elephant, a charmingly intimate theatre space in the very heart of London’s multicultural Elephant and Castle, writes Bella Christy.

The production centres around a group of immigrants who come together to perform their own version of a traditional British pantomime.

From Far Far Away, Dame Foreign and daughter Zara are making a home in the city of Londom (with an M), though Lord Villan, Mayer of Londom begins to make their lives rather challenging.

Both a heartwarming celebration of immigrants in the UK and a critique of their treatment, this production blends numerous genres. It unifies comedy, musical theatre, satire, pantomime and fairytales to demonstrate how a combination of differences can make a beautiful thing.

Act one is fast-paced and charming, it felt fresh and won the audience over with laughter almost immediately. The characters portray an endearing sense of awkward sweetness when playing ‘themselves’, and transform into quirky, distinguished personalities when taking on the roles in their

pantomime. I found the Lord Villain (Vikash Bhai) and his son, Benedict Cumberbatch (Suzy Kohane), particularly captivating.

Towards the end of Act one, the pantomime is disrupted as one of the immigrants receives a deportation letter, breaking the illusion of their characters. Initially impactful, it reminds the audience that the issues depicted on stage are far from mere entertainment. However, as the play progresses, this device is employed excessively, causing disruptions to pace and flow, and unfortunately, the second act began to lose me.

I find that most of the time, less is more, a critique which also translates to Zara’s breakdown scene. Her dramatic screeching did not make me feel the emotion I assume it was meant to. Despite this, John Constable’s song (performed by Gabriel Paul), began to pull me back into the piece. It cut through the comedy, bringing with it a serious tone without the need to break character. Remarks such as ‘I was born here but still need to prove I belong’ depict the difficulties of second-generation immigrants.

It wouldn’t be a pantomime without the obligatory audience participation, and I would say they did a great job.

A few classic ‘he’s behind you!’s’ and a dash of ‘oh no you didn’t’s’ went down a treat. The cast was engaging and playful, drawing us into the world of the panto.

The play appeals to all audiences.

As a white British-born individual I found the quips and critiques of the UK relatable and funny. Though sometimes I didn’t know whether to laugh at the jokes or feel shameful of some of this country’s bigoted tendencies.

Equally, my fellow theatregoer, son of two immigrant parents, resonated with certain aspects of the story and characters. Specifically, connecting with the portrayal of parental pride in their children's ambitions and achievements.

The Foreigner’s Panto was delightfully entertaining, however, I think it could do with some further refining to become a truly brilliant piece.

Tensions Picked Apart in The Island

South London is generously laden with local theatre spaces under railway arches with Union Street’s Cervantes Theatre specialising in works from Spanish playwrights, s Christopher Peacock...

This month we have a new play, The Island, written by Juan Carlos Rubio and translated into English by Tim Gutteridge getting a four-week run.

The Island is a tale of Ada and Laura, a lesbian Spanish couple in a hospital waiting room awaiting the fate of their son who is in theatre receiving treatment after a devastating accident.

Rubio’s script slowly drip-feeds us more and more backstory so that we get a fuller picture of this couple's relationship and what has led them to this anxious wait. It’s a study of the couple's relationship, picking apart the tensions that stem from being in a non-traditional Spanish relationship along with raising a child that has multiple additional needs. As the layers are pared back we learn of infidelity within the relationship and, although they may have seemed like a strong unit battling against the world together, the holes appear.

Jessica Lazar’s direction does a solid job of preventing this from being a rather

static duologue stuck on uncomfortable waiting room chairs. Rebecca Banatvala as Laura has less of the emotional breadth to work with compared to Rebecca Crankshaw’s Ada but both work hard to create a believable romantic relationship as the play delves further into society's judgement of couples with more significant than average age gaps.

The Island wants to tackle taboos of guilt in parenthood and does come with a disclaimer; however, there is plenty of room to add more questions to examine this to find truth.

The intimate Cervantes Theatre leads itself to these studies and pieces.

What we are offered uncovers a lot of nutritional areas of thought, from motherhood, religion and guilt but without going too much deeper. What we see in Rubio’s script is a tendency to lean more into convenient and slightly mundane relationship hurdles rather than getting to the bones of the more controversial content that would really give pause for thought.

When I researched my book Under Fire – Black Britain in Wartime 1939-1945, I made notes about Black Britons who were subjects of artists during the Second World War, writes Southwark historian Stephen Bourne...

For example, the Royal Air Force Museum’s archive has many beautiful portraits of African and Caribbean servicemen and women by the portrait painter Hon. Mrs. Honor Earl.

These include Ulric Cross, the Trinidadian RAF navigator. Tate Britain has in its collection a magnificent painting called ‘Survivors from a Torpedoed Ship’ (1942) by Richard Eurich. Based on fact, it shows a Black sailor helping two white sailors to cling, half frozen, to an upturned lifeboat. Eventually they were picked up but the Black sailor, who is unnamed, regrettably died.

Eurich was a painter who was known for his panoramic seascapes. He was appointed Official War Artist from 1940-45. From 1949 to 1968, Eurich was employed as an art teacher at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts.

Norman Hepple was a portrait painter who, at the start of the war, joined the Auxiliary Fire Service which, in 1941, became the National Fire Service.

He served as a fire fighter during the London Blitz but continued his painting.

Like Richard Eurich, he was also appointed Official War Artist and one of his finest achievements was a portrait of George A. Roberts. He was a Trinidadian who had served in the British Army during the First World War and then settled in Camberwell where he lived until he died in 1970.

It is likely that George’s First World War experiences on the battlefields of Europe, including the Somme, prepared him for the onslaught of the London Blitz.

When the Second World War began, George was too old for combat so he trained with the Auxiliary Fire Service.

His base was New Cross Fire Station and in 1943 he was made a section leader.

As a brave fire fighter, he faced constant danger throughout the Blitz. He put out fires and saved lives while the bombs fell and exploded.

In addition to his fire service duties, George was responsible for organising the Discussion and Education Groups of the wartime NFS. He realised that fire officers had time on their hands between air-raids and the discussion groups helped them to relieve the boredom and tension. As such, George met and befriended a number of prominent artists and writers including Norman Hepple, who painted his portrait.

In 1943 Hepple’s portrait was included in a pamphlet entitled Jim Braidy – The Story of Britain’s Firemen which paid tribute to wartime fire fighters who were subjects of war artists.

In 2018 the London Fire Brigade (LFB) invited George’s great granddaughter Dr Samantha Harding to unveil a red plaque in his honour at New Cross Fire Station.

Dr Harding has also acquired Hepple’s portrait of George and is planning to make the portrait available for the public

notable achievements was becoming, in 1925, the first woman of colour to broadcast on BBC Radio, three years after its launch.

With war clouds (and a Nazi invasion) looming over Europe, Evelyn came home to England and, in 1939, she began a long and very successful association with

protrait the BBC. During the war, she was one of the most popular singers on the Radio. She even had three Radio series of her own: Rhapsody in Black, Sweet and Lovely and Serenade in Sepia.

In 1946 she had her own BBC television series. Evelyn defied convention.

Though born into a West AfricanBritish middle-class family, she defied convention (and upset her strict Sierra Leonean father) to follow her dreams.

She became one of the most glamorous and charismatic entertainers this country has produced.

In 1942 her portrait was painted by Louis Ginnett, a well-known painter of portraits who lived in East Sussex, not far from the home of Evelyn’s mother.

In 2023 Evelyn was honoured with a Nubian Jak Community Trust/Battersea Society blue plaque outside her former home in Barnard Road, Wandsworth.

The recently refurbished Peckham Library has on display the splendid bronze portrait of the community leader Dr Harold Moody which was sculpted by his younger brother, the celebrated artist Ronald Moody.

Dr Moody’s home and surgery was in Queens Road, just a short walk from Peckham Library, so it is fitting it is on display there.

While Dr Moody was tending to the needs of the people of Peckham during the London Blitz, he was joined by Ronald who managed to escape from his home in Paris, France just before the Nazi invasion and occupation of the country. The bronze portrait mysteriously vanished but it was eventually rediscovered and in 2007, with the help of Harold and Ronald’s niece, Cynthia Moody (the curator of the Ronald Moody Archive), and myself, it was purchased by Southwark Council and given a permanent home in Peckham Library.

A copy of the portrait, also by Ronald, can be seen on display at the National Portrait Gallery.

Millwall fan Bourke, from Frank Warren’s stable, is now targeting a title before the end of the year, with British and Commonwealth bantamweight belt-holder Sean McGoldrick and European champion Thomas Essomba in his sights.

“I boxed way better than last time,” Bourke said. “I didn’t know much about the kid but he had a good record and I knew he could hit, so I just had to work him out and then go from there, really.

“It’s been frustrating, they’ve been trying to get me opponents but nothing was happening so I was a

Hayrettin added: “We’ve just got to get the boys up and keep doing what we’re doing and try to get a result because the way we’re playing is not bad, it’s just both boxes at the moment.”

After their 11-0 victory in the Women’s fA Cup the previous weekend, millwall Lionesses continued their scoring exploits with an 8-0 hammering of Aylesford in the London & South east regional Women’s football League Premier division at St Paul’s last Sunday.

LegendAry goALKeePer Preston edwards has made an emotional return to dulwich hamlet.

Edwards, 34, has signed from Isthmian League Premier Division rivals Potters Bar Town after leaving the Hamlet in the summer of 2020.

Edwards has since had spells with Dartford, Brentwood Town, Braintree Town and Cheshunt.

Former Millwall goalkeeper Edwards initially joined Dulwich on loan before signing permanently from Ebbsfleet United in 2016.

Edwards was part of Gavin Rose’s squad that won promotion to the National League South in 2018 and he made 40 league appearances the following season.

Edwards is currently serving a threegame suspension, with one match remaining, and will become available for the league trip to Whitehawk on October 21.

“Delighted and excited about returning to Dulwich,” Edwards said. “This club means a lot to me. It’s not just about the football. It’s about the camaraderie, the community and the shared passion for the game with the supporters.

“I’m committed to get the club back to where it belongs and make it a successful season.”

The caretaker management team of Alex Russell and Adam Rowland made just one change, recalling Tyra Poole at right-back in place of Millie Connell, who played the second half at left-back. They may have instituted a settled side, but competition for places is intensifying, with four-goal FA Cup sharpshooter Grace Laverick again coming on from the bench.

The Lionesses were three goals up by half-time and they added five in the second with Emma Whitter and Liv McGregor getting a brace each, and Chloe Burr, Grace Seely, Shannan Drewe and player-

By John Kelly COLE PALMER hailed Chelsea’s character after he scored his first goal for the club to help Mauricio Pochettino’s side come from behind to beat Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor last weekend.

Wilson Odobert gave Vincent Kompany’s side the lead before Ameen Al-Dakhil’s own goal brought the Blues level three minutes before half-time.

Raheem Sterling was involved in all four goals, including being fouled for Palmer’s 50th-minute penalty and scoring to make it 3-1 in the 65th minute.

Substitute Nicolas Jackson added a fourth in the 74th minute.

Palmer, 21, joined Chelsea from Manchester City for £40million in the summer.

“That’s a really good win for us and we’re really pleased with the character we’ve shown to come from behind and

get the three points.” Palmer said.

“We knew it was important to get a good result to go into the international break with so yeah, it’s a big win for us.

“Burnley are a top side, they keep the ball very well and we knew it would be a tough challenge for us. They’ve got a good manager who is very tactical and we knew that we’d need to match their intensity.

“Thankfully we did that, especially in the second half, and then I think our quality shone through and we were ruthless in the final third.

“It felt really good to get my first goal for this club and my first in the Premier League, too.

“In the first half, I don’t think I was really playing up to the standard. In the second half, I went back out there and things seemed to click for us more.

“I was just happy to help the team. I’m really pleased to score and get an assist but the main thing is getting the three

points and we did that.

“Raz put in an amazing performance but it doesn’t surprise us because we know how talented he is as a player.

“We know what he can bring to the team in terms of goals and assists and he’s shown just what he’s capable of.

“We’re all delighted for him and hopefully we can build on this performance as a team after the international break.”

Sterling helped inspire Chelsea’s comeback as his cross was deflected in by Al-Dakhil before the visitors’ comprehensive second-half performance.

But Pochettino was keen to focus on the collective after back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time this season.

“The team was good, the performance was fantastic, I think they deserve the whole credit,” Pochettino said. “We are so happy for them and go into the international break with a different feeling than the last break.

“We will spend it trying to improve players. Try to recover players from injury.

We have two weeks which we are going to spend working at the training ground.

Pochettino is seeing clear progress in the side after a difficult start to the season.

He said: “When we lost some games against Nottingham Forest and West Ham, we were building as a team. We are a young group now, we are a young team. When you have some young players and some experienced players playing together that doesn’t happen in a matter of seconds, it’s about a matter of time.

“We were performing very well, but of course the players knew very well they needed to improve to add to the team better quality. That was only with time, beginning to know each other and to

‘Class’ Willian makes difference on awful day for Blades

MARCO SILVA praised “class player” Willian after the Fulham winger scored his first goal of the season in the 3-1 win against Sheffield United at Craven Cottage last Saturday.

Man-of-the-match Willian scored the Cottagers' third goal in the 92nd minute on a horrible afternoon for Paul Heckingbottom’s Blades.

The first half was goal-less but there was an awful moment for the visitors when defender Chris Basham suffered a severe injury to his lower left leg

the injury happened and comforted the defender before the medical staff arrived.

Basham wrote: “Devastated with my injury in yesterday’s game. Had my first operation to clean things up and will have a second this week to make things right. Would like to thank the football world for their support in messages and social media posts, [from] all my close friends and family to Sheffield united for taking care of me and Fulham FC for their support in the process, Tim Ream for being there and putting football aside. Former Millwall star Byron Webster still up for the fight in the National League ExcLuSivE

The former Millwall star is still fighting it out in the National League with Bromley at the age of 36 and says he feels in tip-top shape.

The defender left The Den in 2019 after five years in south-east London. He was part of the side who earned promotion to the Championship via a 1-0 play-off final win over Bradford City in 2017.

After short stints at Scunthorpe United and Carlisle, he found a new home at Bromley in 2020 after being convinced

by Lions legend Alan Dunne, now assistant manager to Andy Woodman, to come aboard.

And despite the physical nature of life in the National League, Webster is relishing

the prospect of another promotion bid with the south London side thanks to his simple but effective fitness plan.

He told our paper: "My body's holding up well, I look after myself. We're just over two months into the season and we've already played fourteen games or something like and I feel good. We have great facilities down at Bromley. The facilities and the staff are there to help me recover properly so no problems so far.

"For me, it sounds stupid, but it's all about drinking a lot of water. Drink a lot of water and make sure the muscles are right. A tip that someone told me to stop stiffness is make sure your hips and glutes are always released and loose and then you should be alright."

Even though he is still enjoying his football, Webster has begun looking forward to life after he hangs up his boots and speaks highly about the way former teammate Dunne has made the

transition to coaching.

He said: "I've done a few coaching badges, I've done a few things like a mental health course, a nutrition course and a personal training course so I have a few strings to my bow.

"Dunney's fantastic. You play with these people as players but then to see them in management is crazy. Dunney obviously, and this is no disrespect to him, I never saw him going into management.

Obviously, a fantastic player but now I see him day in and day out and he's the brains of it. He's the right-hand man to the gaffer, he does the analysis, he does most of the coaching, he's fantastic with the young lads. It was a shock for me to see, in a good way.

"I can't speak highly enough of Dunney for what he's done at Bromley. He is fantastic."

Years on from leaving Millwall, Webster still remembers the club fondly and says the make-up of people behind the scenes

is what made the Lions special to play for.

"If I'm honest it's from the backroom staff if anything. Obviously as lads, nine times out of ten you get on with everyone, and if you don't get on with them there's other lads there. But just at Millwall the people behind the scenes, the kitchen staff, the kitman ... everyone's in it. And like at Millwall, they were proper Millwall people. They loved the club. And I go back to success I had at clubs and Yeovil was the same. There were Yeovil fans there.

"So when you go to a club and there's actual Yeovil people, Millwall people there, you have to buy into it. They breathe it and they live it. My son and my daughter still wear Millwall kits, they're fans of Millwall, they're still fans of Yeovil.

"You eventually buy into it and even now I'll look at the Millwall score [on a Saturday], the Yeovil score, they're the first scores I look at. So it becomes less of a job and more of 'I'm invested in this'.

The actual club means something."

By John Kelly Johnnie JACKSon felt AfC Wimbledon did enough to win the game after James tilley’s penalty miss at unbeaten Mansfield Town last weekend.

Jackson’s Dons were handed the chance to go ahead in the 27th minute after Omar Bugiel had been fouled by Lewis Brunt, but Christy Pym pushed Tilley’s rasping drive onto the crossbar before the ball bounced back up against the bar and then dropped down into the goalkeeper’s hands.

Mansfield are the only side yet to lose this season after twelve games in League Two. “I thought it was a really good game,” Jackson said. “Mansfield are a very good team, they’re hard to play against, especially here. I think we’ve gone toe-to-toe with them and given them a proper game.

“I feel we should have come away with all three points. We did enough in the game to do that. It was a tremendous performance from the team after the week we’ve had.

To come here and play like that makes me really proud. If someone was going to win it, it would’ve been us. “[The clean sheet] is one of the most pleasing things about it because I know how many chances they can create.

Their midfield diamond has a lot of good movement and forwards runs. They score a lot in most of the games they play. We limited them to efforts from distance and defended our box really well.

“We’ve come up against a lot of different systems this season but this is the first time we faced a diamond. You can get outnumbered in the middle of the pitch if you don’t get your shape right. We did brilliantly. The distances between our lines and our aggression to win it back was first class.”

The Dons host Bradford City this Saturday at 3pm. Bradford sacked Mark Hughes last week before player-caretaker manager Kevin McDonald steered the side to a 1-0 win at home to Swindon Town last Saturday.

The Dons are fourth, four points off tabletoppers Notts County. The Bantams are fourteenth.

Jackson added: “I can’t wait. I’m loving watching this team play at the moment.

I’m enjoying working with the boys and I’m excited when they walk out the tunnel.

JoSh PASSLey scored in the fifth minute of added-time to earn bromley at 2-2 national League draw at york City last weekend.

Former Dulwich Hamlet striker Dipo Akinyemi put the hosts in front in the 37th minute with his eighth goal of the season.

Ravens forward Michael cheek got his seventh of the campaign when he finished at the back post 20 minutes into the second half.

Lenell John-Lewis headed in Scott Burgess' cross to restore City’s lead in the 72nd minute, before Passley’s late leveller.

The point leaves Andy Woodman’s side in fifth place, four points off third-place Solihull Moors.

By John Kelly gAreth AinSWorth apologised to Queens Park rangers fans after his side were hammered 4-0 by blackburn rovers at Loftus road last weekend.

Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side were 2-0 up at the break through goals from Tyrhys Dolan and Arnor Sigurdsson, before another from Sigurdsson and Sammie Szmodics’ finish completed the rout.

It meant that the R’s went into the second international break of the season in the relegation zone with just two wins and eight points after eleven games.

Rangers’ form in front of their own

supporters is miserable as this was an eleventh straight game without a win at home. It was also a second 4-0 defeat of the season after the openingday loss at Watford.

“It’s not good enough,” Ainsworth said. “We must find a way to start winning games because that just wasn’t good enough.

“I expected more from the team. I am a fighter, and I am going to scrap and fight for everything, but [Saturday] wasn’t good enough.

“We huffed and puffed but didn’t look like getting anything out of [the] game.

“I apologise to the fans. We have two weeks now to put things right.”

"We packed the midfield with three because we knew the midfield area would be key. We've looked at them, we changed the shape. They still over ran us.

"The quality of their one-touch passing was a lot better than ours. We did have our moments but we made it harder than it looked.

"I believe that we have a better squad than when I first came in and faced Blackburn the first time. It didn't

show in the result but I'm confident we can get more results."

QPR have won only one of their last 21 games in all competitions at Loftus Road.

“I think for too long now this club has been second best - one win in a year at home is just not good enough,” Ainsworth said. “There is an inherent problem that we have to sort, we have to find a way to win games.

“The supporters continue to turn up in their droves, but Loftus Road has become such an easy place for teams to come and pick up points.

“We need to address that and be much better here. There is no quick fix, but we will work hard in training to put things right.”

The Addicks appeared to be heading for a first defeat under their new boss against one of his former clubs, after goals either side of half-time from Jordan Rhodes and Karamoko Dembele seemingly put the Tangerines in command.

However, Alfie May halved the deficit on 81 minutes before Corey BlackettTaylor restored parity just two minutes later to set up a Grandstand finish.

And Appleton was convinced his team could have claimed all three points, even if he accepted a share of the spoils looked unlikely once Dembele struck in the 70th minute.

“Absolutely, yeah,” Appleton said when asked if there was only going to be one winner once it went to 2-2. “I thought we were good in the second half, certainly.

“Even before they scored the second goal, I thought the likes of Chuks Aneke, Alfie and Corey all had big moments and it was a matter of time.

“But obviously they get that second goal, which takes the wind out of you a little bit.

“The players kept pressing forward.

We had to take risks, we had to throw bodies forward, we had to make the substitutions because that is what happens when you are down in games.

Luckily for us we got rewarded with the two goals.

“I’m obviously going to be biased but I still believe that we didn’t get quite what we deserved, but certainly after 70 minutes we will take what we’ve got.

“They had moments in the game because of how they are set up, they are structurally really sound and organised.

“I’m delighted with the response that the players have shown but before the second goal, albeit a mistake, there were lots of opportunities there that we sort of didn’t take. So I felt even when we went 2-0 down, I was trying to get the message on to the players there is still plenty of time.

“One goal can change the complexion of the game and that’s what happened.”
