Royal Museums Greenwich will have you Starstruck this summer with its live planetarium show, presented by an astronomer from the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

Deptford Life Drawing hosts life drawing events at The Royal Albert each week. You’ll need to bring your own equipment, whatever you’d like to draw with, and a typical session is structured with five short poses of one to two minutes, three fiveminute poses and two 10-minute poses. A break is then scheduled before you return for the chance to sketch two longer poses. Blackheath Society Walk and Talk Join Blackheath Society members for a wander through Brockley and Ladywell Cemetery, led by Robin Firminger. As will be explained, originally, the cemeteries for Lewisham and Deptford had interesting and notable residents.

This includes the Blackheath artist Sir John Gilbert RA, who began his career as an Estate Agent in a business next to the Princess of Wales; among his accomplishments, he sketched 19th-century Lewisham.

Others include Margaret McMillan, an educational reformer, and Jane Coulson. The cemetery also has plentiful wildlife, a delightful place to walk and is good for butterflies at this time of year. The walk and talk starts by meeting at 10:30am at the War Memorial by the cemetery gates on the junction of Brockley Grove and Ivy Road.

Shades of Dire Straits from Norway pays tribute to the legendary Deptford band in a unique way…

The music of the British rock band will be resurrected with driving rock songs and intimate ballads hosted at The Albany. The band delivers an entire string of hits from Dire Straits, such as

Beauty and the Beast “He’s no monster!”; a new musical adaption of Beauty and the Beast is coming to Greenwich Theatre from 2 to 25 August.

Directed by the theatre’s Artistic Director James Haddrell, the production brings a fresh makeover to the tale in what is sure to be a magical production for the summer holidays.

At the heart of the Beauty and the Beast cast is Louise Cielecki as Belle and Ed Tunningley as Beast.

Cielecki says: “It’s such a joy to be playing Belle. I’m certainly not a conventional Disney princess, but neither is our Belle. She’s funny and silly and, above all, very brave. Where others are scared, she’s intrigued or excited, and that allows her to see what so many others can’t see.”

Haddrell, “and there is a big challenge”.

He says: “At its heart, the original version of Beauty and the Beast is about finding a happy ending if you look a certain way. That isn’t something that any of us were comfortable with, so our Beast is different.

“Without giving too much away, this version of the story has a major twist in the tale. Fans of other versions will still love it, but [writers] Sidonie Welton and Brad Tutt have come up with a bold new take on the curse that the Beast lives under.”

And who needs a traditional princess?

A lot has changed since the original, and you’ll find differences in this adaption of the show, too…

Of the show’s original inspiration, Haddrell explains that since he took over running Greenwich Theatre in 2007, “family theatre has been at the top of my agenda for the venue”.

Because, although the story is popular, this story does stray from that, says

Haddrell adds: “We have one of the capital’s most popular pantomimes,

we present the annual Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival, and many of the emerging theatre makers who we support are creating work for young audiences.

“Back in 2018, we added to our annual programme with the launch of a home-grown family summer show.

Productions of The Jungle Book, The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Pinocchio, Treasure Island and Cinderella have ensured that the Greenwich Theatre summer show has become part of many families’ annual traditions.

“These have all been great shows but this year, for the first time, we have moved away from staging an existing adaptation of a classic tale and have commissioned an all-new script – Sidonie and Brad’s Beauty and the Beast.”

The show also features an original

score, with roots in English folk and blues, with Haddrell reuniting with composer David Haller.

And audiences “are in for a real treat”, says Cielecki. The new adaption of the classic tale will give you the chance to share in Belle’s adventure.

You can expect to “laugh, sympathise and be fully immersed within the story, brought to life with some fantastic original music. My fellow cast members are astonishing multi-instrumentalists and I find it absolutely fascinating to watch such talent on stage”, she adds.

And part of that talent is what has brought Cielecki back to Greenwich Theatre’s stage again and again.

“I have to say that the creative team at Greenwich Theatre has really allowed me to explore, play, develop and most importantly have fun with the

characters I have played”, she explains.

Cielecki adds: “The creative licence I have been given as an actor has truly been so valuable and has allowed me to grow as a performer in many ways.

There are a lot of positives as to why being a ‘regular’ at Greenwich Theatre is so rewarding for me, such as the theatre’s supportive audiences.

“Audiences are so very important within any theatre, but I have noticed the support and positivity from Greenwich Theatre’s audiences are second to none.

“I have also made some lifelong friendships at Greenwich Theatre, too, and I can honestly say that every day I am there I have been in tears of laughter, learned something new and really felt a part of the Greenwich Theatre family.”

Lewisham’s green parks win

The borough’s parks and green spaces retain all 23 Green Flags, the awards given to the very best green spaces around the world Ah, summer. It means picky bits bought from the supermarket, drinks drank solely from tins, it is the months when blankets are bundled under arms to put down on the grass, and a time to make the most of our city’s parks.

South London has some of the best green spaces, and now it’s been confirmed because Lewisham successfully retains all its Green Flag Awards – and also gains a prestigious heritage award.

The borough’s parks and green spaces have kept all 23 Green Flags, which are the awards given to the very best green spaces from all over the world.

As well as retaining the Green Flags, Beckenham Place Park in Lewisham has achieved the Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England.

The criteria for Green Flag Awards include how welcoming and safe a green space is as well as maintenance, biodiversity, community involvement and management.

This is a benchmark in addition to Green Flag status for recognising and considering the heritage features of a park. It includes heritage buildings, landscapes and natural features as well as history and stories surrounding the green space.

The judges’ feedback on the heritage accreditation at Beckenham Place Park says there is a detailed and well-structured conservation management plan, and excellent community engagement. Plus, they said that the planting of the formal beds around the Mansion House and Stable Yard has restored heritage and enhanced climate change resilience and biodiversity.

The judges also highlighted how the park has a very diverse mixture of plants and trees, all of which integrate into the site’s heritage and landscape characteristics.

Four Lewisham parks were rated in the very highest scoring band demonstrating improvement from

Lewisham Council, in partnership with Glendale and many parks’ Friends and Community groups, manages 47 parks, five churchyards and 15 nature reserves in the borough – each with its own unique character and environment.

The Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Strategy aims to make the borough’s green spaces even better by improving community involvement, boosting biodiversity and getting residents – including young people – more involved in decision-making.

Councillor Louise Krupski, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Lead for Environment, said: “Gaining an additional Green Heritage Site Accreditation is fantastic news for Beckenham Place Park and for Lewisham. This news together with successfully retaining all our 23 Green Flags in our borough is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the teams that make our green spaces

special for everyone to enjoy.

“Many thanks to all our Friends groups in the borough, our partners, Glendale and our council’s parks team. As an inner-city borough, we are very proud of our award-winning parks, green spaces and nature reserves that bring so many health and wellbeing benefits to our residents.”

From Deptford to Glastonbury

Youth-led music project REZON8 headed to Worthy Farm to perform over the five-day festival; The Weekender finds out how it went “Every single day we were there, the artists’ performances drastically improved and watching them mimic and learn from artists they watched live hours before was amazing,” explains Kieron Morris, director of REZON8.

The youth music project collaborated with Deptford’s The Albany, Showponies production company, Cleo Savvy, Backstage Rebels and Lewisham Music to take eight young people to Glastonbury to get hands-on experience at one of the world’s biggest festivals.

REZON8 is a youth-led music project for those aged 14-25 and aims to give young people the opportunity to learn how to use music and lyricism as a tool to positively impact their mental health.

“Evidence shows that young

black men are overrepresented in restrictive mental health settings, and yet are least likely to access early interventions and communitybased support,” says Kieron.

“Many young people that we work with have voiced that they feel uncomfortable speaking about their mental health in a formal one-to-one setting but would feel comfortable through a similar process using a creative outlet, such as music.”

Kieron says the opportunity to perform at the festival was presented to them “to bring more diversity to Glastonbury, which I think we did as the lack of people of colour there and young people was surprising”.

While at the festival, they performed on the stage 10 Aces, with a 30-minute

slot every day of Glastonbury.

“In between performing, we would collectively decide which artist we wanted to see together,” he says.

“I think a big part of the experience was finding time to just take it all in. This was something new for us all so a lot of the time we were wandering looking for the next activity or stage we wanted to be at.”

The young people really enjoyed it, and a few had never been outside of London before – or “even to any kind of concert, including myself, so this was a completely new experience for us all”, says Kieron.

“What was great about the festival,” he adds, “was that the young people got to see some of their favourite artists perform, analyse them and

then take what they learned into their performances the next day”.

A lot of learning happened in those five days at Worthy Farm, but where did it all begin?

Of REZON8’s origin, Kieron explains that, in 2019, he had the idea of creating a record label to help some of his friends who did music gain more opportunities within the industry.

He explains: “This was after attending another music project called Alchemy, which I came up through, and I started to volunteer at the time, too. I was directed to The Albany where Kirsty – who’s head of the engagement team – supported to develop my idea and still does to this day.”

REZON8 has worked over the last two years to provide over 200 free recording

sessions using an informal structure, which gives young people the space to talk about their thoughts, feelings and mental health through music.

And what is next? Kieron says that they are dropping a mixtape in September – “hopefully” – as part of the REZON8 boot camp sessions.

He explains that at the boot camp, they “work with artists over six weeks where we cover writing at lyricism, recording in the studio and performance”.

The theme for the mixtape is storytelling and the artists will also be showcasing all the songs on 13 August at The Albany.

Six weeks of football fun with CACT!

Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT) football holiday courses are back for the summer holidays taking place at five venues.

The courses for young people aged 4–15 and are suitable for all abilities.

From skills sessions to football tournaments, young people will take part in various football-based activities whilst taking part in the course.

At the end of each week, participants take part in a penalty shootout tournament and prizes are given out by the coaching team.

CACT is running a specialist girlsonly course (between July 29th and August 30th) and a goalkeeping course (between August 5th-7th, August 12th-14th and August 19th-21st) at Charlton Athletic’s Training Ground in New Eltham.

The battle over gas mantles Mary Mills

One of the more obscure industries in Greenwich was the manufacture of gas mantles. I’m sure there was a factory here which made them, but the details of it seems incredibly difficult to track down.

Now, I did write about this in June 2021 in an article about sites on Deptford Creek but I thought that it was worth expanding the two paragraphs I did then and put the subject – gas mantles, George Livesey and South Met. Gas – into a wider context and try and explain what is important about it – so, sorry if that ends up as boring!

Gas mantles are of course to do with gas lights and we might think there is no need for them today. But they are still needed in caravans and for some camping equipment which use bottled gas for lighting - and, so, mantles are still made. In their day though, in the late 19th century, they were revolutionary in that they made gas lighting more useful and cheaper – and more competitive with newly developed electric lighting.

There was a problem with early gas lights. The gas was coming in through a pipe and was lit at the end of it - but that single flame actually wasted most of the potential light – it needed to be spread out and be more diffuse to give all the light within it. Various devices were developed to produce ‘incandescent light’ but were not particularly successful. Then the gas mantle was developed in Austria by Carl Auer von Welsbach. He was an academic chemist who, while working on a different project discovered by chance that a small woven cotton sack soaked in thorium solution could be used to create a small fragile shell which would spread the flame. By the late 19th century, following a lot more experimentation and development, a successful product was available.

The process was patented and the mantles were manufactured.

There is a complex story about the Welsbach company, the patents and their monopoly position which they exploited ruthlessly. An introduction – for those interested – can be found in ‘Burning to Serve’ by Francis Goodall.

Our local South Megtropolitan Gas Company, and its Chair, George Livesey, were involved but they also had a wider interest in that the electricity was being promoted for lighting –both for domestic use - and for street lighting. It was clear that the gas industry needed to find both new devices and a new customer base.

electricity and ‘incandescent gas was still cheaper’. In 1894 Livesey said that incandescent burner gas was cheaper than if the gas was lit in a traditional fishtail burner. He said “the effect of improved burners is to reduce the price to half or even one quarter “.

He estimated that for 1d. electrical customers got 500 thermal units - whereas they got 16,500 using gas.

The main London factory for the Welsbach mantles was in Garrett Lane, Wandsworth – now the site of Mantle House flats. There is a Pathe news film of King Edward VII visiting a Welsbach factory. https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=p7Goo1Tav2s.

Pathe say they don’t know the location but speculate that it is Greenwich – I’m really not convinced, nor do I think it is like Wandsworth – have a look at it. What do you think?

Now Welsbach’s monopoly was bound to be opposed in south London - and of course George Livesey was just the man in the gas industry challenge it. To let such a challenge to South Met. on their home patch continue was unthinkable.

George Livesey had been an early promoter of incandescent lighting and had persuaded all the local authorities in the South Met. area to adopt it in their street lighting. In 1898 they made an offer to the local authorities who bought their gas for street lighting. They would convert, for free, all the street lights in South London to incandescent ones. They would continue to charge the current price for gas at first but once they had recovered the costs of the conversion prices would fall. How could the local authorities refuse?

In 1902 Livesey sought a settlement with competing mantle interests. He set up a guarantee fund to fight any legal action they brought and stop them unfairly supporting their patent.

They ensured legal representation was properly funded and South Met. initially contributed £2,000..

Eventually, extensive and complex changes resulted in new management at the Welsbach company and they had agreed to end aggressive litigation against small traders.

In 1906 Livesey told South Met. shareholders that ‘the incandescent mantle, had enabled gas to take up the premier position as an artificial light. Eighty per cent of the company‘s consumers used the mantle... the use of mantles accounted for the slight increase in the consumption of gas, but, on the other hand, the mantle was making the position of the company absolutely secure’. Livesey also advised all gas companies to adopt incandescent lighting via a letter in Journal of Gas Lighting.

Throughout this period South Met. advertised incandescent burners throughout south London using their trade name of ‘Metro’. In order to dodge the Welsbach company monopoly they had sourced a cheap supply of burners from abroad, where sometimes the Welsbach patents did not apply. Soon all street lights had been converted and the parishes were saving money. By 1900 incandescent light was effectively universal. South Met. also introduced a new lamp-post and lantern – ‘The South London Lamp’ for use on main roads. The gas industry began to develop all sorts of new ways of providing street lighting and throughout the 20th century continued to light public areas – where most people assumed electric light was being used.

From 1900 domestic customers were routinely supplied with incandescent burners for all purchases.

Although the manufacture of mantles took place in Britain the main source of supply for the all important

thorium solution was the Austrian Welsbach Company. In 1905 it was understood that a German consortium was now in control of the supply of Brazilian monazite from which thorium is derived. Livesey at once took action and, having failed to secure a supply by negotiation he sent Joseph Tysoe off to Brazil.

Tysoe was an important man in South Met. – the Manager of East Greenwich Gas works itself.

However thirty or years earlier he had worked at a gas works in Brazil so – I assume – it was thought he would ‘understand’ it there. His visit is covered in Brian Sturt’s article ‘Joseph Tysoe and Monazite Sand.

Tysoe had started work with South Met. – and had nearly been killed during the construction of East Greenwich works when a crowbar aimed at his head by a ‘marsh dweller’ was narrowly averted. In charge of East Greenwich works he had overseen that it “first... gave employment to but fifty workmen... now between fourteen hundred and fifteen hundred men aee employed... the daily production of gas reaches nearly twenty-three million cubic feet, for the manufacture of which 2,200 tons of coals are used.”

In Greenwich Tysoe was an active politician and was an Alderman on the Metropolitan Borough Council and

he lived in Westcombe Park Road.

I am aware of two articles written

by Tysoe about his experiences in Brazil and hopefully can get copies – from an archive in Warrington - to relate what he had to say about his expedition in another article.

It seems they were unable to get a Brazilian source of monazite.

In 1906 South Met. bought a monazite mine in Shelby North Carolina. But before extraction could begin Livesey had died and the mine was mothballed as unviable, but it emerged as potentially useful again in 1914. The episode is cited in gas histories as ‘an extreme example of a gas undertaking stepping outside its traditional role’.

I began by saying that there was a mantle factory in Greenwich. In my earlier article I said that it was in the ‘Roan Street’ gasholder site on Deptford Creek – now the site of the trading estate in Norman Road and to the north of Greenwich Station. It was called Gas Efficiencies and, I think, dated from the 1930s. In the earlier article the only additional information I had was that its manager was a Mr. Higgins.

Mantles continued to be made – eventually at Phoenix Wharf – which was part of East Greenwich gas works. As I said they are still used – mainly in portable gas lighting – who knows where they are made now.

You must be eligible for the size of property and bids will be considered in the following order: First Band A, followed by Band B1/B2 both in priority date order.

Those in Band C will then be considered in registration date order.

BAND A

is for applicants in unsatisfactory housing, including people moving due to demolition and those under occupying their homes.

Please note that there will still be some properties with age restrictions so only people of this age group can apply for these.

B1 or B2

is for applicants the Royal Borough of Greenwich must prioritise according to the law, particularly homeless people, and others with an urgent need to move for medical or welfare reasons.

SEASIDE & COUNTRY SCHEME This scheme offers one and two bedroom flats and bungalows on the Coast and in the countryside, in the South East and West of England. In order to be considered you must be: • A Council or Housing Association tenant • At least 55 years old. If you intend to add a household member under the age of 55 they must be either your spouse, current joint tenant, registered carer or dependent adult child.

Your removal costs will be met if you are a Council tenant and you do move to a Seaside and Country home.
