Are you ready to vote in the Greater London Authority (GLA) elections?

The GLA elections on 2 May are the first borough-wide elections to require ID for in-person voting.

Do you have everything you need to vote?

You can vote if you are 18 years old on election day, a British, European Union or Commonwealth citizen – and registered! You can vote • In person: When you register to vote you are automatically set to vote in person at a polling station. Polling stations are open 7am to 10pm on election day.

• Postal: You can apply online before 17 April at 5pm to vote by post.

Anyone can request a postal vote, whether it's because you can't vote in person or just find it more convenient.

• By proxy: You can apply by 24 April at 5pm for somebody else to vote for you if you cannot get to your polling station. Both you and the person voting for you must be registered to vote.

You can use a passport, driver’s licence or some forms of concessionary travel passes. No ID? No problem! Apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) by 24 April at 5pm.

New online tool to report unauthorised development Vote to fund your favourite community project Residents and community groups can now vote for round six of the Greenwich Neighbourhood Growth Fund. There are 43 shortlisted projects that have been suggested by residents.

Vote for your three favourite projects which you think will have the biggest impact in your community.

In previous years, the Royal Borough of Greenwich has funded new windows at a play centre, created a sensory garden for a hospice, helped set up a community creche and so much more.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has launched a new online tool allowing people to report concerns about unauthorised development.

Examples of this could be building without planning permission, not following planning conditions, or making changes that weren’t agreed on during planning permission.

The tool has been developed to make it easier for residents or businesses to report concerns, day or night.

The online tool is designed to gather all the information needed for the council to investigate. Reports can be made by anyone: royalgreenwich.gov.uk/unauthoriseddevelopment

Head down to the Deptford Lounge Clothes Swap on 24 February (and the last Saturday of every month) and swap items to give them a new home.

For the frill of it Director of cushion brand frill of it Grace Collins tells Eliza Frost about her frilly and fantastic designs – and about growing up in the area The Weekender: Tell us the story of frill of it…

Grace Collins: When I was decorating my one-bedroom flat, space wasn’t a luxury I had. My living room armchair stayed empty for months because I couldn’t source the perfect cushion. It needed to have a grandeur and beauty that was worthy of its central placement. It needed to be soft, plush, pretty, bold, fun and beautiful.

One night, I had a dream of a big frilly square that exclaimed “SOUTH EAST LONDON”. That’s what I needed, but it didn’t exist. That is where the design journey began. And I’m so glad my armchair is now – finally – complete.

Why did you choose to make cushions?

I love a cushion. I love home. I love sofa and I love bed.

I love comfort, cosiness and calmness – everything a nice squishy cushion symbolises. Cushions are such a brilliant way to layer a room; they create depth and texture. They are inviting and homely. Whether scattered on a sofa or bundled on a bed, they are (by their bouncy, cuddly nature) inviting. My empty armchair lent itself to questions about what a cushion should be, what it should say and how it should make a space feel.

What is the story behind the name?

I’m a sucker for a frill. And a thrill. So, why not combine the two? Literally, give me anything with a frill around it and I’m sold. I like what they stand for – they are fun, flouncy and frivolous. They are pretty, and plush. A home should be thrilling.

Our cushions bring the frill and the thrill.

Where do you take inspiration from?

My South East London roots! I was born in Bermondsey and a good old portion of pie and mash will never not make me happy. The eclectic pockets of our great city endlessly inspire me. I am drawn to areas that are characterful, and a little “rough around the edges” – the chaos and colour and character of our city. Our brave and bold statements pay homage to London, from its bustling East End markets to its delicious expanses of greenery.

What spot is next?

We are launching North London and South West London in March (eek!), and our SE London faves are about to come back in stock. Be quick!

What do you love about working on the designs?

I love envisioning colours together and experimenting with different places. I love working on one-off commissions because they are so wonderfully specific and unique. They elevate anywhere! A shop in the town of Frigiliana in southern Spain recently ordered one saying: “OH FRIG.” I’m excited to see our linen frills basking against whitewashed walls in the Mediterranean sun.

You grew up in Greenwich, what is your favourite thing about the area?

It has to be the market, seeing so many creatives in one area, selling beautiful things. I love the fact that Greenwich attracts people from all over, it’s such a melting pot of culture. The park rivals any in the world.

What would be your local recommendation?

Help to create a smokefree generation L

ate last year, the Prime Minister announced ambitious plans to tackle the single biggest preventable cause of ill-health, disability and death in the UK: smoking.

The proposals include: n New legislation to make it an offence to sell tobacco products to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 n This means that the age of sale of tobacco products will increase by one year every year, so that children turning 15 this year or younger will never be legally sold tobacco – a move supported by 71 per cent of adults in Great Britain n New funding to help current smokers quit by doubling cash for local ‘stop smoking services’

to nearly £140 million, as well as £30m to crack down on illicit tobacco and underage sale of tobacco and vapes The new rules will not criminalise smoking or mean people who can be legally sold cigarettes now will be prevented from doing so in the future.

But it will be a huge step to help the three-quarters of smokers who say they would never have started the addiction if they had the choice again.

“Smoking is based on addiction and most people wish they had never taken it up,” says Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England. “They try to stop and they cannot.

“As a doctor I have seen many people in hospital desperate to

Father-of-three Tim Eves, 45, from Rustington in West Sussex, smoked for 12 years and quit last year with the help of his local Wellbeing Hub. “I spoke to them, we set a quit day and I did it with them,” he explains, with the aid of nicotine patches and gum, and weekly check-ins.

“Some people can just stop and then never smoke again, but for most it’s hard getting through those initial tough few months.

“Once you do, the benefits hugely outweigh the downside, the stress of giving up.

“It’s not often I feel proud of myself but I thought, ‘This is a big thing in my life’. And every day I feel healthier as a result. And I have a few more quid in the bank.”

Devan Cusack, 25, from Leighton Buzzard saw her mum struggle to give up smoking – which is why she has never started.

She supports plans to phase out smoking for future generations, saying: “They need to do something about it because smoking is just so casual and easy to do. People aren’t actually aware that it’s a big issue that needs to be spoken about.

“I have a younger brother, who turned 14 recently and I was talking about it with him. He may never be legally sold cigarettes and he’s all for it as well...

I know there will be ways to access it somehow, but this is a good first step.”

l With more than eight in ten smokers starting before the age of 20, new plans to create a smokefree generation will help our children and their children avoid a lifetime of addiction. l The proposals will see tobacco phased out over time to prevent future generations from ever starting to smoke in one of the most significant public health actions in recent times, saving thousands of lives and billions of pounds.

Returning for another year, Deptford Literature Festival 2024 is taking place on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 March and will be hosted by Spread the Word – London’s literature development organisation based at the Albany – in collaboration with independent producer Tom MacAndrew.

Funded by Arts Council England, the place-making festival has commissioned 38 local writers from Deptford and Lewisham for this year’s events, with 80% of the festival artists coming from south London.

heart, the theme for this year is ‘Unheard Histories, Untold Stories’. Through words, stories and performances, the events will celebrate the diversity and creativity of Deptford and Lewisham.

The great gas strike of 1889 and the tragic death of young William Mary Mills

It’s 1889 and you are standing in Trafalgar Road - it’s December, coming up to Christmas. We can see marching down the middle of the road a column of men. They have come from Westcombe Park station and are going to turn into Blackwall Lane. All the way down the pavement are crowds of people but between them and the road is a line of police. There are also mounted police out in the road. Some of the crowd are shouting abuse and throwing stones. It’s not good.

That night there was a concert at the East Greenwich works and condolences were sent from the audience to the family.

On 21st new gas workers were still being marched in from Westcombe Park Station, and they were followed by a mob of between 150 and 200 men and boys. In Marsh-Lane the men threw stones at the police, while one man was arrested and rescued by the mob.

A Police Sergeant was hit in the head by a stone and suffered concussion of the brain.

Some people will know what is going on.

- perhaps they were taught it at school or read about it in history books about the great gas ‘strike’ of 1889 where, apparently, Will Thorne and the ‘new’ trade unions fought South Metropolitan Gas Company on the issue of the eight hour day. Now that is all wrong – but I am not going through the whole story here now. I am in the middle of writing a book about it –but today I am just going to give you a little snapshot of some of the things going on in December 1889 in Greenwich.

The main action was concentrated in the Old Kent Road but there were two gas works in Greenwich in 1889 which were affected - the older one down on the Creek - West Greenwich works where Waitrose is today. The other was, in 1889, the brand new, not even really finished, super works at East Greenwich - ‘in the marshes in a lonely and remote spot by the riverside’.

So, in early December the press reported that at Greenwich, 200 workers at West Greenwich works and 345 at East Greenwich had handed in their notices - giving their employers a week’s notice of the legal termination of their employment. The Company began to recruit replacements – ‘blacklegs’ or ‘new men’ depending on your point of view. The men who were leaving were ‘stokers’ - they put the coal into retorts, where it was heated to extract the gas. It was very hot and heavy work requiring strength and stamina and ‘stokers’ had to be big tough men.

On the Monday at East Greenwich there was

thick fog. Late that night Police Inspector Lauder led a force of thirty constables down the Riverside Path. He carried a torch but the fog was so thick that he missed his way and the men were marched towards the river and onto a wharf. The inspector and his assistant fell off the end of this wharf and lay, twenty feet below, in the mud. The inspector had broken his leg by falling against a barge. They managed to get him up out of the mud and put him onto a stretcher, but it broke under his weight.

Once the ‘old’ gas workers had worked out their notice they began to finish their last day and leave. By 6am at East Greenwich works many night shift workers were leaving and nearly a hundred police, including several mounted constables, were there. There was no disturbance in the yard, although some men gave cheers and hoots. Those leaving were not just stokers, but others whose jobs were closely associated with them - scoop-drivers, fire men, front stokers, pipe jumpers, trolly men and coal wheelers. There were nearly 400 East Greenwich men leaving and many of them were “mere youths with wives and families and without resources of any kind”.

The men came out in double file, each man displaying a Union card in his cap, and many of them carrying bundles of clothes. They were greeted with loud cheers by their comrades. They went to an unoccupied piece of land at the top of Marsh Lane, where a meeting was held. An effigy of Mr. Livesey (company Chair) was exhibited on a pole. Mr. M. Canty, of the Gas Stokers’ Union, denounced the bonus

scheme – one of the issues which had led to this withdrawal of labour - as a fraud upon the men and the public, saying that the bonus would diminish with a rise in the price of gas. They were confident of victory.

The 14th December was a Saturday morning and 29 men had come from Dartford to work in the gas works to do the jobs of those who have left. Unfortunately they had conducted themselves in a disorderly fashion and been sent off with five shillings each. Two of them had started a fight with a man, who was coming down the steps in the works. Later in the afternoon some of them were hanging about near Christ Church, very drunk and asking passersby to come and ‘fight the black legs’. They also made suggestions about the use of a lamppost and a rope. Send them back to Dartford!

The Greenwich Gas Workers Union committee were campaigning against the bakers and those shopkeepers who were sending food into the gas works to feed the “blacklegs.” They held a meeting near East Greenwich Gas Works, on the Marsh, to protest against the “traitorous conduct of certain persons who have sent their wives into the gas works to act as cooks and attendants.”

Inside the works were 500 ‘new hands’.

Beds were provided for them, and a large stock of provisions laid in. Men with a background of stoking steam ship boilers came from Portsmouth and other seaports and also a few pensioners, who had been in the service of the navy as stokers. Others came from Dartford and Colchester and

were met at Maze Hill Station by large bodies of police, and were escorted to the works. Lewisham Workhouse also sent a large contingent of unemployed claimants.

The local press reported that the ‘new’ men seemed to be ‘more than contented with their lot. They are comfortably housed and well fed, and amuse themselves with the newspapers, cards, dominoes, draughts, and music, provided at the expense of the Company’. A church service was held in the works by the Rev. J. Kyle, of the Mission of St. Andrew’s on the Marsh. How many people now remember the church on the Peninsula in Blackwall Lane on the corner of Boord Street - it had a pretty iron bell tower.

Many of the ‘new’ men were inexperienced and accidents happened - like when a ‘new’ man slipped on the floor of the retort house at East Greenwich owing to the nails in his boots, and the scoop fell upon his leg, breaking it just above the ankle.

But on the 20th December there was a terrible accident in the works – which had no connection with the strike at all. William Melbourne, age 15, a messenger boy, died in the Seamen’s Hospital from injuries received when a coke truck ran over him.

William Everest, the engine-driver - and the Elbourne family’s neighbour - said he was in charge of a train of trucks, loaded with coke and breeze, going between the retort-house and the wharf. He saw the lad running as if to cross the line in front of the engine, but instead he seems to have tried to jump up onto the footplate, stumbled and fell. He found the boy lying with his

Later that day the strikers paraded the streets of Greenwich and Deptford, accompanied by a band.

On Christmas Eve a group of local men - all ex-gas stokers were charged at Greenwich Police-Court with assaulting the police in the execution of their duty on Greenwich Marshes. Thomas Brown, 33, of BlakeleyCottages, Blackwall Lane, James Jarvis, 34, alias Mad Bill, of Blackwall-Lane ; George Muter, 55, of Blakeley-Buildings; and Samuel Parker, 20, time-keeper, of Lenthorpe-Road.

Parker, Minter, and Jarvis all got one month’s hard labour and Brown got two months. In Court there were ‘expressions of lamentation amongst their female relations’...

26th Christmas Day. In the gas works most of the ‘new men’ had been unable to leave and return to their families. But there was a plentiful supply of roast beef and plum pudding and malt liquors for the nonabstainers. Anyway they were all grateful ‘their sobriety and behaviour being most praiseworthy’. The company laid on religious services and a musical entertainment, which was probably a minstrel show.

For the old men – they could live on the lump sums they had received from cashing in their pensions when they left their jobs. For a few weeks there would be strike pay from the Union. And then?

As the impactful programme enters its milestone 10th year, Joy of moving has inspired over 550,000 children to get moving through play and delivered over 2.5 million hours of learning in hundreds of schools.

With more than 70,000 children set to benefit from the programme this academic year, Joy of moving is based on a unique methodology, developed by Ferrero alongside independent experts, that encourages children to get active using play as the foundation, whilst helping them to develop key skills, such as motor coordination, creativity, and social skills.

Calling Royal Greenwich residents: Apply now for the new Community Arts Fund Advisory Panel The search for the first ever Community Arts Fund Advisory Panel is on!

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is looking for five people who live, work or study in the borough to be part of a new panel that will help commission the council’s Community Arts funding programme for 2024 to 2025.

The Community Arts Fund supports arts and cultural initiatives across the borough that celebrate the diversity of our communities, encourage participation, build partnerships and put a spotlight on local creative talent.

Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture, and Communities, said: “We’re committed to listening to our communities, to ensure that our residents feel heard. Last year we simplified the Community Arts Fund application process following feedback from previous applicants.

“Now, after the success of our first ever Black History 365 Community Advisory Panel, we’re recruiting five local people to help us co-commission the next Community Arts Fund programme in the same way.
