Looking back now, what advice would you give to your younger self? Coming to the Albany in Deptford on 7 and 8 March, the story of Camp Phoenix shows how one summer can shape a lifetime, writes Eliza Frost…

Camp Phoenix follows the journey of 17-year-old Zia (David Carpenter).

When they arrive at Camp Phoenix for a compulsory weeklong residential, they aren’t sure if it’s for them. The camp helps young people emerge from the dust of their younger selves, just like a phoenix.

But not everything goes to plan…

The production by touring theatre Zest Theatre has been directly developed through conversations with young people, including students from Lewisham College – some of whom will make up the cast at each of the show’s performances at the Albany on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 March 2024.

The Weekender spoke to Camp Phoenix writer Katie Greenall and director Toby Ealden to find out more…

The Weekender: The story of Camp Phoenix was inspired by the voices of over 600 young people – how did their voices shape the story you tell on stage?

Katie Greenall (KG): Over five weeks in January and February 2023, we met 600 young people across the country. We met pupils in Years 5 and 6 and asked them what they wanted, what mattered to them, what they cared about and what they were worried about, particularly focusing on any worries they had for the future and going to secondary school.

We then took the pupils’ comments to local college students in those areas, asking them to offer their wisdom or advice as the experts who had just been through that experience.

So the show is full of their wisdom, their ideas, their worries and concerns, and also full of the people that we’ve met. There are characters in the show that are named after and inspired by the people we met in the places.

KG: This show is definitely designed for young people aged 9-11 who are about to embark on change. Still, it could also be for young people already in secondary school and the people who are supporting them through that time, whether it be parents, carers or teachers.

I hope it will support any young person from age 9-21, and their families and carers.

KG: Hopefully in lots of ways. There are a few different ways how we model making space for others in the show with our character: Les, who advocates for the young people and holds space for them, including Zia, our everyman that we follow.

We see how the young people learn and support each other when they

Finally, what advice do you wish you’d had when you were a kid?

KG: To encourage and emphasise

the things that made me unique, rather than try and change them – and to have confidence that those will be the things that help me find my people and my space and my job, rather than prohibit me.

TE: Take each day at a time rather than always thinking too far into the future. To be present in each moment and not let the stresses of life distract you from who you are meant to be.

Greetings from Ireland With just one more week to catch Robyn Lynch’s debut exhibition at Greenwich’s NOW Gallery, The Weekender puts it under the spotlight

Interweaving notions of Irish identity and cultural narratives, while reminiscing fond nostalgic memories of growing up on the outskirts of Dublin in a pre-social age, Irish-born, London-based menswear designer Robyn Lynch’s Greetings from Ireland is not to be missed.

The debut exhibition was awarded the NOW Gallery 2023 Fashion Commission. It is a bouncy castle getaway into the not-soserious world of Lynch, and it’s showing until 25 February.

“From assisting another designer as an intern to now having the opportunity to showcase the development of my brand from inception to date in the same space is a full 360 moment for me.

Greetings from Ireland exposes the vigorous research, design and documentation process behind the scenes of Lynch’s label, shining light on the community and collaborators who have helped shape the brand.

“I am extremely honoured to be given the opportunity to celebrate Irish creatives and culture within the gallery walls.”

Lynch says: “Being awarded the NOW Gallery 2023 Fashion Commission has been a monumental moment for my brand. I have been an admirer of the NOW Gallery Fashion Commission since it was established in 2015, when I got the opportunity to assist on Phoebe English’s commission while interning at the brand.

Housed within an alien-like giant smiley face bouncy castle caged by scaffolding, Lynch partners with Irish artist, set designer and longterm collaborator Rory Mullen to create the paradox installation.

The pair bring together their shared vision and playful design approach to create a structure symbolic of the brand, embodying Lynch’s

nostalgic inspiration, light-hearted humour and rough and ready aesthetic, still a work in progress.

The exhibition culminates in a retrospective documenting the brand’s journey from working on the kitchen table to the present day, weaving together behind-the-scenes footage from the studio to fashion week, alongside a snapshot of the community and creatives who have adopted and grown with the brand.

The documentary-style film captures the vibrant energy of Lynch, depicting the final stages of the creative process, the showcase of the brand, when a collection is born and worn in the real world.

Set designer Rory Mullen says: “Inviting the viewer to enter into an inflatable structure – enveloping and immersing them in Robyn’s memories, family, national identity and sense of humour that is essential to her brand.

The structure is influenced by 1960s utopian housing, bringing together its ideals of optimism and playfulness.”

So, bounce along this week and catch the exhibition before it says goodbye.

Charlton Women’s player meets students as part of mental health workshop

Godfrey joined the students to share her own football journey.

As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, 20 students from Hurstmere School in Sidcup took a trip to The Valley as part of the Premier League Inspires programme, meeting Charlton Women’s midfielder Freya Godfrey to discuss the importance of mental health.

Premier League Inspires is a personal development programme which uses the power of football to inspire young people aged 11-18 at risk of not reaching their potential, to develop the personal skills and positive attitudes needed to succeed in life.

The Hurstmere students took part in a mental health workshop delivered by CACT staff members discussing the signs of poor mental health and good mental health.

In groups, they came up with ideas on what they can do to raise awareness for mental health and signpost people to get the help they need.

CACT staff delivered a mental health workshop at The Valley to 20 young people.

Godfrey stopped by to join the students for a Q&A session all about her footballing career and how she looks after her mental health.

The 18-year-old opened up about how she has struggled with her own mental health as a young footballer: “When I was younger I went through some struggles. I was dropped from England which I think was quite tough but it was from my own attitude which I think was tough for me to overcome.”

She went on to address why it’s important to talk to young people about mental health:

After the event, a group of students will start working together on their own social action plan and propose their strategy for raising awareness for young people’s mental health, supporting the Premier League’s Inside Matters mental health campaign.

“From a young age you need to start being aware of signs and signs in your mates. Making sure that people can get the best help as soon as possible, it doesn’t just affect adults so I think making children aware of that is really important.”

Then the group were lucky enough to get a private tour of The Valley exploring the home and away changing rooms as well as heading out pitch side.

Enderby Wharf’s role in laying ocean cables

Over the last couple of weeks Greenwich Industrial History Society members have been busy writing an application to Historic England for listing the cable loading equipment at Enderby Wharf.

Do you know about this relic equipment? It’s on a jetty at Enderby Wharf on the Greenwich Peninsula riverside. If you are at the Cutty Sark Pub on Ballast Quay you can walk down the Riverside path past all the new flats called Riverside Gardens – or you can follow it on Google Street View. Just before you get to Enderby House Pub, there is all this old machinery on a jetty, you can’t miss it. It’s been there for many, many years and it’s a unique example of equipment which was used to load cable from the factory where it was made onto the ships which were going to lay it in the ocean – and that cable takes your information and messages all round the world.

The old equipment left there now is obviously relatively modern – but it represents over 150 years of cable for communications being loaded here on to the big cable laying ships to be laid at the bottom of the oceans. Always remember that until the 1920s almost all the world’s subsea cable was made here in Greenwich. So that cable gear represents a lot in the history

taken over by Morris Cranes. Morris were very helpful but investigations to locate any archive information proved impossible. A brass licence plate with vital information on it had been removed from the crane by persons unknown some years previously.

The upriver crane had been manufactured by Anderson Grice but very little was known about it.

Information from Bristol suggested that it was capable of handling 5 tons only but men who worked on site say that it could handle 10 tons. It seems amazing that there should be so little information available about two such relatively modern pieces of equipment.

I am reminded of a similar attempt to get a different lot of machinery listed on a nearby wharf. It was only 22 years ago but then things were very different.

In 2001 we tried to get listing status for two cranes at Lovell’s Wharf.

Lovell’s was on the first bit of the Riverside Path from Ballast Quay – on what is now Riverside Gardens flats. It’s the bit of riverside you will have walked on to get to the machinery at Enderby Wharf.

The wharf had been operated for the past 80 or so years by Bristol based wharfingers, Shaw Lovell. Anyone who was around there before the 1990s will remember how it was always very

busy with ships alongside the wharf and there was also a large 1960s office block. In 1982 the wharf was handling 118,000 tons of cargo a year - steel, aluminium, galvanised sheeting and gas pipes, as well as timber. Later it was used for short term storage of building materials. But we all knew it would be up for ‘development’ sooner rather than later, although ships were calling there right to the end.

Two cranes remained on site after work there ended... Cranes like them were once very common around the Port of London but they have now completely disappeared. It’s strange to think that many people these days will have no idea what the busy riverside used to be like – everywhere all movement and activity with big crane jibs swinging out to vessels alongside and the river

itself full of ships. It’s the noise of the river you miss the most – when it all closed down the silence was deafening.

The two tall ‘Scotch derricks’ at Lovells were a dramatic part of the Riverside.

We did a bit of research to find out more about them to try and get them recorded and maybe preserved.

Shaw Lovell’s records did not reveal when they had first acquired them; both had been used elsewhere. We understood that their lattice-framed style probably dated them to before 1950 and both were electrically powered. The down river crane was the ‘Butters’ crane brought here from Dublin Custom House in the mid1970s and which could handle 20 tons. Butters were Glasgow based crane manufacturers who had been

In the course of getting information together one young bloke climbed up the crane. I’m sorry I can’t remember his name, but he came from Deptford and always wore a cap on back to front.

He took a lot of photographs of what would have been the crane driver’s view.

We tried to put in an application to get them listed but it wasn’t acceptable and we were told that English Heritage did not list machinery. Now I knew through my national contacts in the world of industrial history that a number of consultancies had been commissioned about doing just that. I remember sending copies of some of the documents to the then chief Greenwich planner – someone who generally kept abreast of new developments - but he knew nothing about any of this.

Greenwich Planners were however very supportive of keeping the cranes and were working with some potential developers who had ideas about ways in which they could be used.

It was all useless. One Saturday

morning at 6 am a demolition crew arrived and demolished both of the cranes on behalf of the site’s freehold owners. I always suspected that it was because film makers who wanted to use Ballast Quay for historical location shots were complaining about them being in the way. Ironically the one witness to this demolition was apparently a former crane driver, living on the top floor of the Harbour Master’s House – and by the time he managed to contact anybody that morning the cranes were gone.

Things are different now. English Heritage was being divided up some years ago and the part of it dealing

with listings is now ‘Historic England’.

There are many new members of staff and most of the ‘traditional old-school conservationists’ have retired. New staff are graduates of a range of disciplines and, I am told, much more aware of what they don’t know. There is ‘an appreciation of all the varied aspects of the past’ ... ‘learning the lessons of what has been lost’.

So, things look a lot brighter for getting listing status on the machinery at Enderby Wharf, which is just a short distance on from where the cranes were.

But there are some other issues at

Enderbys. Next to the jetty where the machinery is are some steps going down into the river. These went to a small ferry where a man would pick people from the wharf and take them out to the cable ships moored in the river. They also covered Bendish sluice – part of the medieval system for draining the marsh. In around 2003 a lot of work was done on the Greenwich Riverside by the Groundwork charity.

One of the things they commissioned was a project to replace the steps with a special hardwood on which was carved a history of the cable industry. This was overseen by a member of the local community who has looked after them ever since. She tells us now that she has recently had more work done on them. There are now gates to prevent them being damaged by vandals.

There were other things at Enderbys which have been lost. That included a set of penstocks for the sluice which were demolished by the Council some years ago. Before all the flats were built if you stood on Enderby wharf

with your back to the river and looked towards Blackwall Lane through some gates - you were looking down the length of what had been an 18th century rope walk. What was the point of getting rid of that? Next to it was a large office block decorated with a frieze of gutta percha leaves. Gutta percha was the important insulator for all those cables lying on the bottom of the world’s oceans. That building was demolished with never a by-your-leave or thank-you.

However there is something new here. There is a new(ish) art work consisting of seats and a table which are designed as replicas of various important cables made on the site. The artist was Bobby Lloyd and it was built because the Council put it into the planning consent for all those flats when the site was developed. Unfortunately there were no arrangements made for looking after it and keeping it clean and tidy. I hope this has been sorted out now – and if so, thank you to the Council Officer concerned.

Anyway - ‘good luck’ with the listing of the Enderby equipment. It’s very boring if after all this development everything all looks the same. Variety in the environment can be achieved in leaving behind something of its past.

And with Enderby’s surely we need to tell people about the heritage here. All those tourists fiddling with their i-phones might like to know that Greenwich people played a big part in the technology which allows us to talk to each other all round the world.

Pity that walking down to Enderby’s they won’t get much idea of what this riverside was like, when the river was The River. (sigh) Thanks – Alan Burkitt Gray, and many, many researchers on Enderbys including Stewart Ash and Richard Buchanan. With the cranes – many who had worked on the site, and the Shaw Lovell director. LBG Planners and the then Riverside Officer, and, of course, the man with the backwards cap.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out repair works.

The Order will come into operation on 28th February 2024 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However, the works are expected to take 5 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, proceeding, or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading), in Whitworth Street at the junction of Trafalger Road.

Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via the placing of the appropriate signage. Prohibitions remain in force; pedestrians are not affected, and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

REASON FOR CLOSURE The closure of Holy Family Catholic Primary School is considered necessary because its operation is no longer deemed financially sustainable. This is considering the anticipated continued reduction in demand for primary school places in the local area and London in general, in the medium term.

Holy Family Catholic Primary School pupil roll numbers have fallen consistently over the past years and as school budgets are based on pupil numbers, the school’s growing financial pressure is anticipated to get worse over the coming years. By the end of the 2023/2024 academic year, it is estimated that the school will be missing £118k in funding, which will rise to £362k by the end of next year and further increase in years to come. Low pupil numbers also impact school experience for students, as there are fewer opportunities to socialise and less staff to provide quality curriculum, which the students deserve. Keeping the school open is therefore likely to be detrimental to the education of the students on roll and extend the period of uncertainty around the future of the school.

PUPIL NUMBERS AND ADMISSIONS The school has experienced a persistent reduction in roll number, with the total number of primary-aged pupils decreasing by 32% from 211 in January 2018 to 143 in January 2024.

As a one form entry school, with capacity for 210 pupils aged 4 -11 (i.e., Reception Year through to Year 6), the level of admissions to the Reception Year has been persistently well below the Planned Admission Number of 30 and only 19 pupils were enrolled in Reception in September 2023. In the ongoing 2024/25 admission round, only six families have chosen the school as first preference, meaning that the school can only be certain of having six students in Reception in September 2024.

Figure 1 below shows the number on roll in the school during January census between 2017/18 and 2023/24 academic years. This consistent reduction in roll number is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

There are 18 pupils in Nursery however three are part time so FTE = 16.5 Figure 3 below shows the gender split and the number of children with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan enrolled at the school as at January 2024 school census. The consultation process on alternative schools for those children with EHC Plan has commenced in line with the statutory SEND process to ensure that these children are not impacted by the proposal to close the school, should it be implemented.

DISPLACED PUPILS, IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY, BALANCE OF DENOMINATIONAL PROVISION AND TRAVEL As at the January 2024 census, there were 125 pupils on roll in Reception to Year 6. The closure of the school will not affect the children in Year 6 as they will be transferring to secondary in September 2024. As such, 100 pupils are expected to be affected by the decision to close the school in August 2024.

pubLiC notiCes Figure 4 below sets out the number of places available in Royal Greenwich schools within a reasonable distance to Holy Family Catholic School and shows that there are a total of 248 places available in schools within a reasonable distance to Holy Family Catholic School. This is evidence that there are enough spare capacity in local schools for alternative provisions to be made available for children likely to be displaced if the decision to close the school is implemented.

The evidence set out in Figures 4 and 5 above shows that given the availability of places in both local non-faith schools and Catholic schools, the impact on the community of the closure of Holy Family Catholic Primary School will be reduced.

Figure 6 below shows the number of baptisms conducted by the Catholic parishes around Holy Family Catholic Primary School between 2019 and 2022. This suggests that the number of Catholic families likely to attend Mass regularly in the parishes around the school has reduced by 36% between 2019 and 2022. This infers that the impact of the closure of Holy Family Catholic Primary School on Catholic families in the Catholic parishes around the school will be limited.

Working collaboratively with the Archdiocese of Southwark, measures are being put in place to facilitate redeployment (where possible and appropriate) of staff likely to be displaced by the closure to other Catholic schools within the Archdiocese where there are staff vacancies. Where redeployment is not possible, appropriate individual support will be offered to limit the impact of the closure on affected staff.

In addition, the Trades Unions and relevant professional associations will be consulted with regular liaison maintained with them throughout the closure process, if closure is agreed.

Reducing serious violence across Royal Greenwich The Royal Borough of Greenwich has published our Serious Violence Strategy, to help everyone in the borough feel safer by preventing and reducing serious violence.

The strategy outlines and builds upon the joined up work the Council already does with its partners through the Safer Greenwich Partnership (that includes the MET Police, NHS and National Probation Service amongst others) to analyse the causes of serious violence locally, with a focus on prevention and early intervention.
