Multi-faith service to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial day takes place every year on 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp during the Second World War. The Council will mark Holocaust Memorial Day with a remembrance service in Woolwich Town Hall on Monday, 29 January at 10.30am.

Led by Mayor Councillor Dominic Mbang, the service will feature performances and bring faith leaders together for reflective prayers.

Last chance to see Disney on display Since it opened last October, Disney100: The Exhibition has given us Brits the chance to peruse hundreds of objects and treasured pieces of memorabilia relating to the American’s chief children’s entertainment franchise. The exhibition commemorates 100 years of Disney. More educational than a theme park, Disney100 features 250 encased artefacts relating to the brand, including letters, costumes and props. The classic movies including Winnie the Pooh, Cinderella and The Lion King get a look in, of course, but display cases are also given over to more recent favourites, including 2013’s Frozen and 2021’s Encanto. Holly O’Mahony: We hear the word ‘mindfulness’ bandied a lot, but what does it really mean?

Judith Quin: Mindfulness in its simplest form is taking the time to be aware of yourself and how you feel, or how you are responding mentally, physically, energetically and emotionally, to any given thing, or in any given moment. To adopt it, make a practice of taking a breath before making a choice or before any action that might impact others to check how it makes you feel.

HOM: New Year’s resolutions can be tricky to keep. Any advice for those looking to adopt more mindfulness into their routine in 2024?

JQ: Be mindful about the resolutions you’re making. Think of the resolution you’re about to make – does it make your body feel tight and constricted, or open and light? Does it make your brain feel achy and confused or clear and certain? Make each resolution something you’d love to create in your life, rather than something you feel is a ‘should’, a ‘duty’, or an ‘obligation’.

If you’re working towards something you’d love, enjoy, and reap personal or professional rewards from, you’re more likely to keep taking the steps to maintain or create those choices.

HOM: Beyond the big changes – like taking up yoga or meditation – what are some little changes people can make to find gratitude and peace in their everyday life?

JQ: There are several simple practices you can implement that take very little time. Firstly, gratitude: take a moment to count the simple things you are grateful for in your life. This works especially well when things are tough; you may wish to write them down. Secondly, record your ‘daily delights’. It can be as simple as a child’s laugh, the smell of a flower, or a cloud formation. It’s whatever made your heart sing, or brought some light to your life. This should put a smile on your face before you go to sleep.

Thirdly, get barefoot on the earth: taking a moment to put your bare feet on a piece of grass makes you breathe and take a moment to acknowledge what is good, bright, or inspirational.

Fourth, turn your phone off or stop looking at it for at least 30 minutes before you go to sleep. Finally, breathe and hum: if you’re stressed, take a long, slow breath out through your mouth and in through your nose.

Do this three times, then place your hand on your heart and gently hum in a low tone while imagining sending the sound into your hand. Repeat as required. This brings you out of

your head and back into your body – it’s a fantastic stress reducer.

HOM: What’s new for your business Your Whole Voice in 2024? What sorts of classes are you running?

JQ: I’m going to start running my sonic meditation sessions regularly again. I’m hoping to confirm days and times soon, but West Greenwich Community Centre and The Bakehouse Theatre at the back of Age Exchange in Blackheath are the two venues I’m looking at.

Voice-Vibration Sonic Meditation is like a sound bath but using voice as the instrument. At the end of the session you bathe in the stillness and silence. I also support the sessions with my crystal bowls sometimes.

This week, on January 20, I’m also running a half-day intention-setting sounding session in Waterloo, and for those willing to travel, in May I’ll be hosting my award-winning three-day sound healing retreat in Sussex.

HOM: Have any local businesses in Blackheath been an inspiration to you and your vision for Your Whole Voice?

JQ: My vision for Your Whole Voice is to positively impact people by liberating voices to liberate lives. So anyone who positively impacts others

is an inspiration to me. I recognise these qualities in Kerry Tait who runs Kerry On Dancing at Mycenae House and the Old Colfeians rugby club. She is an inspiration in how she brings people together. One member of Kerry’s class, Jean, is 87 and dances for the full hour with all of us – jiving until the end of the session. She’s an inspiration. When we liberate ourselves from what we think others might think of us, we allow light in.

HOM: Similarly, are there any local addresses that you enjoy visiting in Greenwich and Blackheath that you’d like to share with our readers?

JQ: I’ve lived in the area 20 years now and some places I’ve loved forever, while there are always new ones popping up. I love The Village Greengrocers in Charlton: it’s a business that values community and puts this at the heart of all it does. I’m a Greenwich Market girl for many things, but I especially love its clothing and lifestyle shops Corkville and Dragonfly. The cafés that in my opinion have the best vibes are S.O.S Coffee in Blackheath, the Old Cottage Coffee Shop by Charlton Park and ArtFix in Greenwich. I’m still mourning the loss of Red Door in Greenwich, which got priced out of the market. For outdoor spaces,

Greenwich Park and strolling along the river are givens, but I also love the wooded space in Maryon Wilson Park and the old graves in the Greenwich Pleasaunce.

HOM: Lastly, to set us all an example, are you happy to share any of your own goals or resolutions for 2024?

JQ: Professionally, I’m hoping to take my voice-vibration sound healing practices into the military, so that’s a huge goal. I’m also corunning a seven-day sound healing retreat in Barbados in November 2024, for which the goal is to have eight wonderful women join me. I don’t do resolutions, but I do have choices: I choose to change up how I exercise and to cycle more frequently. I am also choosing to expand my business in ways that stretch me and scare me a little! I also usually choose a word for the year, which this year will be ‘allow’.

Charlton Challenge returns for the new school term!

Charlton Challenge offers a fun way for children aged 2-8 to learn new skills and develop their game play.

Charlton Challenge is a structured and progressive scheme for 2–8-year-olds aimed at developing children’s core movement and football skills. The programme is designed for maximum enjoyment ensuring that whilst the participants are learning and developing new skills, they are also having fun.

At the end of the course, all players receive a certificate and feedback based on our assessment criteria as well as a wristband to represent the level they achieved in the programme.

All Charlton Challenge sessions are delivered over 12 to 16 weeks, three times a year at local leisure centres and are split into four challenges by age group.

Charlton Challenge sessions provide the perfect foundation for players to progress onwards to the Valley Gold Advanced Centre, in which its participants train to an academy-standard curriculum.

One young person who made the most of the Charlton Challenge programme is Oli Fairley who began attending at the age of four and his love of football has only grown since.

Oli regularly attended the sessions and as he continued to develop and grow, Oli was offered to join the Valley

Oli’s development within football due to attending regular Charlton Challenge sessions is the perfect example of CACT’s pathway of progression. Now as part of the Valley Gold Advanced Centre, if Oli continues to improve, there may be opportunity for him to trial with the Charlton Athletic Academy in the future.

Since being with CACT, Oli has continued to learn new skills and has been growing in confidence during the sessions which has helped him to be a part of the U6 Advanced Centre group with an opportunity to be a part of the Pre-Academy next year.

Two big ballets return to Bromley

If you thought the flurry of Christmas ballets had been swept off stage for another year, not so fast: the Churchill Theatre is hosting two alltime favourites: The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. The ballets are being performed by the International Classic Ballet Theatre, a troop of international dancers represented by PACE Ballet USA, with an orchestra bringing Tchaikosky’s memorable, magical scores to life. The twin ballets return to Bromley’s leading theatre following a well-attended UK debut there this time last year.

With the ballets returning to the Churchill Theatre this weekend, we look back at our interview with Sophie Mergaliyev, a dancer and dance teacher with International Classic Ballet Theatre, who last year told us all about how the company will be staging the well-known works…

Holly O’Mahony: As a company, you perform ballets both in the UK and the US. Are there any notable differences between audiences on either side of the pond?

Sophie Mergaliyev: After the pandemic, it has been wonderful to be dancing to a live audience again regardless of the country to be honest. We performed to very welcoming audiences in the US, but it’s always special when you get to perform in your home country, and we’re looking forward to the UK audiences – beginning with Bromley!

HOM: The Nutcracker follows a young girl, Clara, on her adventures with the Nutcracker Prince. How would you describe your production of the story?

SM: Magical, Christmassy and accessible for all.

HOM: London has a generous sprinkling of productions of The Nutcracker at this time of year. What sets yours apart?

SM: Our Nutcracker is very colourful and full of energy. It has a blend of styles from across the ballet world and is very family friendly, so it’s a great introduction to the story for young audiences as well as those for whom it’s a festive favourite.

Uplifting and celebratory, it truly transports you into a magical world.

HOM: You’re also staging another Tchaikosky masterpiece, Swan Lake.

How would you summarise this one?

SM: It’s an emotive, dramatic journey of love.

It’s a tragic love story, isn’t it, about a prince who falls in love with the Queen of the Swans and is tricked into betraying her. What defines your production of it?

SM: Our production is very traditional yet still very relevant for today’s audiences. It gives all the feelings one would hope for from such a classic, capturing the emotion and spectacle, with a powerful corps de ballet [group performance] portraying both serenity and strength throughout.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope audiences take away from seeing either show?

SM: We hope they enjoy the magic of beautiful ballet accompanied by a live orchestra. Hopefully we can transport them briefly into another world, and they will experience a real feast for all their senses.

were the local landowners. The Francis Street pond was one of the sites previously used by the Military for water supply. It remained in use until it was purchased by the Admiralty in 1856 and the site was cleared to make way for the Royal Marine Infirmary. In 1825 the company advertised for contractors to work on the ‘Upper Reservoir, Woolwich Common’ which is as yet identified. Known reservoirs on the Common date from the mid 1840s.

I am very aware that quite soon I need to start talking about reservoirs and water storage – there are a surprising number in the areas, and not all built for the Kent Company. The larger reservoirs in Greenwich and Woolwich date from the 1840s and for its first thirty years or so the Kent Company appears to have concentrated on improving the works at Brookmill.

As daily life and work at Brookmill continued sometimes we get a quick glimpse of the real state of things rather than what is recorded officially. Let’s go to the 18th June 1821:It appears that because the Company had property in Woolwich that they had to pay rates there. Since 1815, which for Woolwich purposes was the establishment date of the Kent Company, they had been ‘rated to the relief of the poor of the parish of Woolwich’ - but ‘it was alleged that they had always evaded the payment of the rates’ and what’s more ‘taken measures to avoid the process of distress’ . I think that means that they had evaded the bailiffs when they turned up with an order for the Kent Company to pay the required sum.

Between 1815 and 1821 ‘the rates had accumulated to a sum of £8031.

13s’. That is a great deal money and the currency convertor on the National Archive web site says that

in today’s prices that is £461,232.16.

So, on the 18th of June 1821, the prosecutor, James Richie, got a Justice’s ‘warrant of distress’ and went, together with a Constable, to the Kent Company’s engine house at Brookmill. They were ‘Determined to execute it by stratagem, if not by fair means’. They got there at around 1am and lurked about the area until about 4am. There was a six foot wall, defended by iron spikes, which went around the works. Ritchie and the Constable climbed up this wall and then hid ‘within’ the bulwarks’.

When the boiler workmen arrived in the morning and the enginehouse was opened, Ritchie and the Constable went in. Ritchie produced his warrant and laid his hands on the steam boiler, saying that he ‘seized it for the Woolwich poor rates’. He was instantly seized by the Company Engineer, Charles Weir, who pushed him down the flight of steps which led up to the boiler. He was then dragged ‘neck and heels’ out of the engine house’ by Weir who was helped by the Company’s Surveyor, and the Engine Stoker. The Constable was thrown out next.

Once they were outside however things got friendlier and they ended up drinking rum and water ‘to cheer them after their night’s vigils.’ I don’t suppose that every day was this exciting at Brookmill. I also wonder what Charles Weir and the Surveyor were doing in the engine house at this time in the morning - presumably around 6.00 or 7:00 AM. Also in exactly what way Ritchie thought he had ‘seized’ the boiler – he could hardly carry it off to Woolwich.

To return to more normal behaviour.

The first engineer to the Kent Company had been Ralph Dodd’s eldest son, Barrowdall Robert Dodd.

He had been succeeded – and I

don’t know the date - by Charles Alexander Weir, who had previously been apprenticed to Ralph Dodd.

He died suddenly in 1829 following a haemorrhage while sitting with his wife shortly after the birth of their seventh child. A charity appeal was launched to provide financial support for this bereaved family. I can’t imagine that a diet of early morning rum and water is good for anyone’s long term health Important works were carried out at Brookmill under Charles Weir. In 1819 contractors were employed to excavate a reservoir on the Brookmill site. This was just the first and by the 1890s most of the area, now the park and the housing area on both sides of the river, were covered by reservoirs – but I do not know which was which in terms of age or, indeed, anything else.

In 1824 a second pumping engine from Boulton and Watt was installed.

This is described as ‘exactly similar engine to the former one” and was installed alongside it in the same engine house. This engine had a long working life of 106 years – taken out of service in 1924; it was not actually scrapped until 1932, when the engine house itself was pulled down.

There were repeated orders for iron pipes in large quantities as water mains spread around this expanding district. It is said of their contemporary - South Metropolitan Gas down on the Old Kent Road, that their prosperity was based on serving a newly expanding suburban area. It is cheap to put gas – and, obviously, also water - mains into new roads and new areas.

In the inner city there has to be negotiation with existing residents which comes expensive. It is very interesting to think that maybe Kent waterworks’ success paralleled that of South Metropolitan Gas.

Like the gas works the waterworks used and so ordered coal supplies in bulk ‘Three Hundred and Twenty Chaldrons of the BEST WYLAM MOOR COALS ... pool measure, clear of metage, and port duties ... To be delivered at the mouth of Deptford Creek’.

Meanwhile the old corn mill was still at work and let out by the waterworks. It is ‘described as an ‘old established flour mill ... commanding an extensive connection’.

In 1832 William Richard Morris was appointed as engineer and he was to stay in post until retirement, eventually being replaced by his son, another William Morris – who remained until and after municipalisation in 1904.

It was during the administration of the water works at Brookmill under Morris that the Company grew. As we will see from the 1840s things really took off. Morris was to initiate considerable modernisation of the Brookmill site – achieving particularly high standards in water purity. Much work on infrastructure was provided to support military and military manufacturing in Woolwich.

Landlords: Do you have a private rented property licence?

An additional licensing scheme for houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) came into effect across the borough from 1 January.

The scheme covers smaller HMOs and properties which contain three or more residents living in separate households where a kitchen, bathroom or toilet is shared.

It runs alongside our mandatory HMO licensing scheme and allows us to regulate privately rented and multiple occupation homes so that they are kept safe and are properly managed.

We also operate a selective licensing scheme in central Woolwich and Plumstead which includes houses or flats rented out to individual families, couples and single people.

It's a criminal offence to operate an HMO without a licence.
