It’s Now or Never for Elvis at the Churchill Theatre

The

Elvis Presley tribute act Lee Memphis King is resurrecting the King of Rock and Roll at the Churchill Theatre. For his latest tour, the celebrated impersonator homes in on Elvis’s ‘Vegas Years’ (1969 – 1977), when he was at the top of his game. Backed by a live orchestra and dressed in an array of Elvis’s most iconic outfits, Lee will leave his audience ‘All Shook Up’ with renditions of ‘Suspicious Minds’, ‘In the Ghetto’ and more.

The Tom Robinson Band used their voices for good causes too: they were founding members of Rock Against Racism, and Tom himself was one of the first openly gay musicians of his generation. His 1978 hit ‘Glad to be Gay’ was an anthem of the decade. At 71, he’s still on the road, so turn up and show your support.

A woodland wonderland for tots Deptford’s Albany Theatre is inviting the youngest audience members to discover woodland creatures through a soundscape conjured by classical musicians from the City of London Sinfonia. Through a cacophony of violin, cello, clarinet and percussion, little ears can guess which animals they can hear. It’s a relaxed performance too, with audience members invited to leave, re-enter and wander around throughout.

While worlds and often oceans apart, between the 15th and 18th centuries, the production of European tapestries were as readily invested in as maritime navies and trading companies by those in power.

The two often went hand-in-hand too, with weavers commissioned to stitch maritime scenes onto tapestries. Fast forward several hundred years and many of these designs are useful records of historical significance. But, due to their size, weight and delicacy, tapestries can pose some challenges for museums and curators.

At this National Maritime Museum conference, you can hear all about it as both the history and conservation of maritime tapestries are being explored.

Art classes for over 50s It’s never too late to learn a new skill, eh? With this in mind, Age UK Bromley & Greenwich is putting on a series of free art workshops for Greenwich residents aged 50+. Running from January 12 until March 8, the classes will take a different theme each week. Sessions in dyes, embroidery, wood, lino cuts, and learning how to copper foil are among those promised. The course culminates in an exhibition on March 8, where attendees will be taken through the ropes of hanging artworks for a show.

A three-day celebration of the Van de Veldes With the Queen’s House’s exhibition The Van de Veldes: Greenwich, Art and the Sea set to close its doors this Sunday, January 14, the museum is throwing it a last hurrah in the form of a weekend-long festival with talks, art workshops, and tours, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Spotlight Willem van de Velde the Elder and Willem van de Velde the Younger were Dutch father-and-son artists who specialised in maritime art. Arriving in the UK in 1672-73, following an invitation from King Charles II to set up a studio at the Queen’s House in Greenwich, the Van de Veldes became the founders of English marine painting – later inspiring the likes of J.M.W. Turner. Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) already owns the world’s largest collection of artworks by the Van de Veldes, but the exhibition marked a once-in-a-generation retrospective, with them all on show together.

The exhibition marked 350 years since the Van de Veldes moved to England from Amsterdam, and the festival will provide a final opportunity to engage with the works of the Van de Veldes while they’re still on show locally.

Speaking to the Weekender about the festival, the Queen’s House General Manager Samuel Hindle said: “Both the public and our staff have thoroughly enjoyed this exhibition and the team wanted to celebrate its end with a series of talks, tours and a drop-in drawing session.”

All events taking place in the festival are inspired by the Van de Veldes and the collection. Highlights at the three day festival include an intimate art workshop (Saturday 13 at 11am and 2pm), in which the techniques adopted by the Van de Veldes to create maritime art are being explored; a talk on The Solebay Tapestry (Saturday 13 & Sunday 14, 11am & 2:45pm), and The Van de Veldes Highlights Tour (Friday 12, 3:45pm

Catch up with the Calendar Girls The plot is based on the true story of a group of women from a Yorkshire branch of the Women’s Institute. Following the death of one member’s husband, the women bravely agree to pose for a nude charity calendar, sending the profitis to the hospital that treated him. But the calendar, with its subverted pictures of the women baking, gardening and doing all sorts of other WI-approved activities – with their tools hiding their intimate areas – went viral, propelling the women to fame and prompting numerous copycat calendars.

The musical is not the first telling of the story. Firth first wrote the criticallyacclaimed 2003 screenplay, which starred Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, and was directed by Nigel Cole. Next, Firth adapted it for the stage as a straight-up play, which opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2008 before going on a national tour and then into the West End in 2009.

Cheeky, uplifting and packed with memorable songs, it’s no wonder Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s Calendar Girls musical is continuing to do the rounds almost a decade on from its premiere.

Producer Bill Kenwright’s updated version of the musical, featuring “a re-imagined book and new music” is calling in at the Churchill Theatre this week, where it’s likely to win over audiences old and new with its cheering, saucy charm. still, only this one with songs, Firth teamed up with singer-songwriter and record producer Gary Barlow to write a musical adaptation of the story, which opened to

acclaim in 2015 – and continues to be the most-toured version of the tale. Highlight hits from the soundtrack include can-do number ‘Dare’, scene-setter ‘Yorkshire’

and women-praising ‘Girls’.

The story is very much the same: set in 1998, it follows Angela Baker and her WI cronies’ mission to raise

money for a leukaemia charity after Angela’s husband John is diagnosed with blood cancer.

Calendar Girls the Musical comes to the Churchill Theatre this January in a production directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, with a cast of familiar faces including Laurie Brett (EastEnders), Maureen Nolan (The Nolans, Blood Brothers), Lyn Paul (The New Seekers, Blood Brothers), Helen Pearson (Hollyoaks), Samantha Seager (Coronation Street) and Honeysuckle Weeks (Foyle’s War).

As moving as it is funny, and as tender as it is cheeky, Calendar Girls on stage should prove just the spirit-lifter to laugh away those January blues.

The Upbeats Walk is a very popular event which helps to raise vital funds for CACT’s Down’s syndrome programme.

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) had a fantastic year in 2023 engaging with its local community and improving the lives of those who need it most.

This year marked 30 years since the murder of Stephen Lawrence and CACT was proud to partner with the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation and welcome Baroness Doreen Lawrence to The Valley for the Red, White and Black matchday.

CACT raised a record-breaking £49,000 for the Charlton Upbeats with the annual Upbeats Walk fundraising event. Over 180 walkers helped to make the event a success as well as the kindness of Charlton fans to help support one of our flagship programmes which is entirely reliant on donations.

An organisation-wide Impact Report was released which calculated that CACT’s programmes generate an incredible social value of £49.6 million. Across all 67 programmes that CACT delivers, it engages with over 25,000 people with activities focused on improving their mental and physical health

and wellbeing, reducing crime and improving education and employment opportunities.

The annual CACT Awards was hosted at the prestigious House of Lords which celebrated the hard work and achievements of our participants, staff members and partners.

The event hosted by CACT’s Vice President Lord Michael Grade of Yarmouth CBE highlighted six award winners this year including the mental health provision and youth service partner B Young Stars.

Breathing new life into Les Noces

A little over 100 years since the Russian ballet Les Noces was first performed in Paris, at the Théâtre Gaîte-Lyrîqué in 1923, a contemporary reimagining of it is set to be the dance showpiece at Woolwich Works this week, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Les Noces, meaning ‘The Wedding’ in English, is a ballet in four parts, choreographed by the famous Russian ballet dancer Bronislava Nijinska, to music by hugely influential composer and conductor Igor Stravinsky.

The production comes to the stage in the hands of New Movement Collective, a contemporary dance outfit committed to “redefining the boundaries of choreography and performance through ambitious, cross-disciplinary practice”. Unlike many other dance companies, whose work is conceived by a single choreographer, the New Movement Collective conceive, develop and produce their work together, allowing all of their creatives a stake in the vision for each piece.

Supporting New Movement Collective’s dancers in bringing to life this fresh take on the ballet is a cast including singers from the Opera Holland Park Chorus and musicians from the Royal Academy of Music.

While the ballet will be set to Stravinsky’s piano and percussionheavy score, the company has additionally commissioned three contemporary composers to respond to the original score: the

project’s music director Yshani Perinpanayagam, emerging RAM composer Andrea Balency-Béarn, and Beatbox Champion MC Zani.

involve some visual and digital art, too. We know, too, that the company is keen to focus on the story’s sense of “mass celebration”.

Also involved in the production are dancers from English National Ballet’s ENBYouthCo and Manchester-based Chameleon Youth dance company.

In the century since Les Noces was first performed, the ballet has been revived frequently by leading companies, including the Royal Ballet, which just two months ago, in November 2023, held a daylong festival commemorating the work of Bronislava Nijinska and Les Noces on its centenary.

The story of Les Noces is relatively simple, with the more dramatic moments playing out off stage. As a bride, Nastasia, is getting dressed for her wedding to her husband Fétis, she’s sung to by a choir – who for the most part tell her how wonderful her married life will be.

The ceremony itself is not seen; instead, we skip to the wedding feast where the guests are getting merry. Lastly, we see husband leading wife to the bedroom.

The New Movement Collective describe the work as “a deeply emotive exploration of what is at the core of human relationships and commitment”. How they interpret the ballet is yet to be seen, but their works typically focus on creating experimental performances in unusual spaces – often with the audience inhabiting the same space as the performers. The growth of the Kent Waterworks Mary Mills

With the New Year I think it’s about time I returned to the history of the Kent Waterworks. This is about the water supply to Greenwich and Woolwich and it is going to go into many, many episodes. The Kent Waterworks Company only started in 1809 by an Act of Parliament.

In three previous articles I have described how initially the works was set up to extract water from the Ravensbourne on the site of a water mill at Brookmill Deptford, south of Deptford Bridge and how a water driven pump was installed there

by William Yarnold in the late 17th century. His successors continued to run this small waterworks until it was taken over in the mid-18th century

by John Smeaton, the engineer, and his cousin and associate, William Holmes, a London watch and instrument maker. They updated the works, which continued to extract water from the Ravensbourne and distribute it to an area of Deptford and Greenwich using wooden pipes and with some sort of priority given to the area around Sayes Court.

Many histories of the Kent Company say that it was founded by Ralph, or a Robert, Dodd, an engineer active in speculation in the water industry at the time. I described his probable role in an earlier article. Ralph Dodd certainly suggested such a scheme to draw water from the Thames to supply Rotherhithe, Greenwich and Lewisham.

A new company was set up in 1810 and a proprietors’ meeting was called for ‘the election of an engineer’ but it was Robert Dodd who was involved. A report on an associated court case comments ‘not Mr. Ralph Dodd, of whom the Court had frequently heard, but his son’.

Shares in the company were sold by auction and purchasers were thus likely to be a miscellaneous bunch of speculators.

Intriguingly a story in a local newspaper of 1823 reported on the murder of a John Smith who had been landlord of the Dover Castle Pub in Deptford. It says that he had purchased the old waterworks and then sold it to the Kent Waterworks Company.

The new Kent Company acquired Parliamentary approval to purchase ‘the letters patent, property and assets

of the Ravensbourne Company’ for £65,000 – which to be honest isn’t a lot, even in 1809. They were not permitted to pump water from the Thames and had to include Rotherhithe, Lee and Lewisham within the area of supply, along with Greenwich and Deptford.

When the Kent Company took over the works at Brookmill it was still a fairly small installation. The works were on the banks of the Ravensbourne and consisted of a pump worked by a water wheel. This was still the original machine put in by William Yarnold and updated by Smeaton. Almost the first thing the new owners did was to consult engineer, John Rennie, who visited the site with James Watt. This visit may be an indication that this small site was seen as having a useful future.

However money was needed if they were to modernise and there are many calls on shareholders in the local press.

On Rennie’s advice a single-acting rotative pumping engine was installed, made by the Birmingham based, Boulton and Watt Partnership. Its technical details include a cylinder 36in diameter with an

8 ft. stroke. The engine had a nominal horsepower of 55 and there were two sets of pumps. Steam was supplied by two wagon boilers. This expensive investment was sited on the west bank of the river near the water wheel and presumably the engines pumped to the top of the existing water level but this height is not recorded.

In May 1810 the company called tenders for the construction of a steam engine house and a boiler house at ‘the top of Mill Lane, Deptford’. At the same time the corn mill – still apparently functioning after 130 years – is advertised ‘to let’.

The water was distributed through wooden mains. However an advertisement from March 1810 calls for tenders to supply cast iron pipes – of various sizes for a total of 32,000 yards. In August they advertised for a contractor to excavate for a reservoir. Things were clearly changing..

Now, before we get any further, we need to go down to Woolwich to see what was going on there in respect of water supply.

concentrated there and Greenwich no longer had a municipal presence in its town centre. It was not always thus - in 1809, which is the period we’re looking at in terms of water supply, Greenwich was ‘one of the principal towns in Kent’.

Woolwich had a less organised local government structure and was dominated by the vast government owned military, naval manufacturing and other sites. There was very little in the way of municipal facilities - and there was certainly no domestic water supply. A reservoir for military use existed in Mulgrave Pond – and I’ll come back to that later.

In order to try to remedy this situation the Government had passed an ‘Improvement Act’ in 1807 and appointed commissioners to undertake improvement works in the town. Water supply being something near the top of that list. Parliament’s made a statement that Woolwich was insufficiently supplied with water ‘which in case of fire might be attended with calamitous consequences to the town and the Royal Arsenal, dock and rope yards’.

The Commissioners were authorised to purchase land and springs and then

to make ‘reservoirs and waterworks for supplying the inhabitants’. Sadly the Commissioners turned out to be even more incompetent than the locals.

They started off well by buying some land in Charlton from the Maryon Wilson Estate, where there with springs which could be used for extra water. This was the same site later to be used by one of the two abortive Charlton waterworks in the 1860 - it was then a field. There were plans to build a water main which would go from these springs to a reservoir which was being made on land belonging to the Bowater family on a site about halfway up Francis Street - about where the long brick wall finishes at its lower, northern, end. It was called ‘Bowater Pond’ - not to be confused with another ‘Bowater Pond’ nearby. I don’t suppose that any of these ‘ponds ‘were particularly large.

Co-incidentally in Vincent’s History of Woolwich there is a short item about another reservoir that had been ‘discovered a few years ago at stabling near Pickford’s Yard’. I cannot believe that this can have been an extensive

installation – if it was unnoticed, it couldn’t be anything more than a smallish pond.

The Woolwich Commissioners intended to install a steam engine at the Charlton site, and began negotiations for purchase of one from Birmingham based Boulton and Watt and John Rennie reported their deliberations. A note from Rennie ‘thinks our letter to the Woolwich Water Works Co. a proper one’- which sounds to me like some sort of ultimatum. A steam engine was however supplied by Boulton and Watt. A year or so later when Kent Company engineers investigated they found the engine ‘in the cases in which it came from Soho which had never been opened”. Further examination found ‘the engine was found inapplicable to the purposes of the company’ and so it was ‘sold by them to other parties for £500’.

Rennie also comments that the Woolwich project is being sold to the new Kent Waterworks Company.

A new Act of Parliament for the Kent Company was passed which required them to take over the scheme from

the Woolwich Commissioners and empowered the Commissioners to sell to the Kent Company all the property they had purchased to set up a water supply to Woolwich.

The Kent Company’s area of supply was thus increased at a stroke to include Woolwich, Plumstead, Charlton, Bermondsey, Peckham, and Peckham Rye. Arrangements were also made for the Company to supply various Government establishments. The Ordnance Department at Woolwich and the Artillery Barracks of the Garrison were first supplied, and later contracts were made for the supply of the Royal Arsenal, the Admiralty establishments, the Dockyard at Woolwich, the Royal Observatory, the Royal Naval Hospital, and His Majesty’s Dockyard

and Victualling Yard at Deptford.

So within two years of being set up the Kent Water Company had more than doubled its area of supply. The company had also changed from looking for extensions to the West - the earliest prospectus of the company, and indeed Dodd’s promotion saw its future upriver to Rotherhithe.

Peckham, and Bermondsey, and Lewisham. Now, by Government order, the expansion which actually took place was east to Woolwich and that continued right up until municipalisation in the early 20th century. The Kent Company took in sites to the east and the South and into the area we would now describe as ‘Metropolitan Kent’.
