A206 Pettman Crescent Bridge repairs: plan your route and allow extra travel time The Royal Borough of Greenwich will be carrying out essential repairs on the A206 southbound bridge between Nathan Way and Plumstead High Street in Plumstead, from 27 December to 5 January, weather permitting. The closure will require road users to use alternative routes. While no bus stops will be closed, some bus routes may experience delays due to the roadworks.

Disney on Ice celebrates 100 Years of Wonder Smash hit returns to London this Christmas with a very special show celebrating 100 years of the franchise, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Produced by Feld Entertainment, 100 Years of Disney is an all-new production that sees several of Disney’s well-known stories brought to life side-by-side on the icy stage.

The show comes to London following a national tour that took the show to Birmingham, Nottingham, Exeter, Sheffield and Newcastle in the run up to Christmas, as well as Northern Ireland. It arrives at the O2 Arena in Greenwich in time to bring to life the magical world of Disney for the festive period.

Disney stalwarts Mickey and Minnie Mouse – who first appeared in Disney’s 1928 musical-comedy Steamboat Willie – lead the procession of characters.

We’re following a nostalgic Mickey Mouse, who’s taking a trip down memory lane through his own and his fellow Disney cronies’ most epic moments.

Along the way, expect to bump into some of the franchise’s best-loved characters reenacting their most heroic moments. Audiences will set sail with Moana as the ice is transformed into a

glittering ocean for her mission to save her island with the demigod, Maui. You’ll also cross paths with Frozen sisters Elsa and Anna, who are spinning and twirling through their quest to protect the kingdom from a cruel, endless winter and a power-grabbing prince. But don’t get too comfy on the ground: the show will send you diving under water to swim alongside Dory and Nemo, and soaring into the air with Buzz Lightyear, Woody and The Toy Story gang.

Heading onto the ice for the first time

this winter is 2021 hit Encanto. This part of the show promises a journey into the Colombian mountains where you’ll meet Mirabel and her magically gifted family.

The escapade is brought to life by a talented team of international figure skaters from the United States, Canada, Brazil, the UK and several other countries besides. Many of the performers have been skating since they were old enough to walk, but even so, they typically rehearse for 550 hours before the show goes live. The behind-

the-stage team are just as busy, what with 250 different costumes and almost as many props to make. It reportedly takes 19 trucks to move 100 Years of Wonder between cities and a good 10 hours to set it up in each location.

The show isn’t the only event in London celebrating 100 years of the franchise.

An exhibition currently running at ExCeL London, Disney100, is a chance to ogle at 250 encased artefacts relating to the brand, including letters, costumes and props. It features memorabilia from Winnie the Pooh, Cinderella and The Lion King as well as more recent favourites including 2013’s Frozen and 2021’s Encanto.

Disney On Ice has been bringing to life the faces from its enchanting movies for nearly 40 years. Like all Disney On Ice extravaganzas, 100 Years of Wonder is set to a score of award-winning music, featuring some of the best-loved songs from the familiar movies – and you can sing along, if you like. Add to that a parade of beautiful costumes, jaw-dropping special effects and a cast of worldleading performer-athletes enacting the heart-warming stories with style and precision on the slippery ice, and you have the recipe for a spectacular live show. Prepare to gape in awe at high-flying jumps, daring acrobatics and world-class figure skating.

Getting festive at the Extra Time Christmas party!

 Some Extra Time participants sang Christmas carols during the party to entertain the rest of the members.

On Wednesday, Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) hosted the Extra Time Hub Christmas party at The Valley with over 100 of its participants.

A live band proved to be popular with lots of the participants up on their feet dancing to their favourite tunes.

The Addicks U21 squad also joined the party and got stuck into a variety of activities. Whilst Henry Molyneux and Ralfi Hand headed to the dance floor, Jason Adigun, Tolu Ladapo and Nazir Bakrin helped to serve teas and coffees.

Meanwhile some of the other players went head-to-head with Extra Time participants in table tennis and darts.

Charlton co-owner Charlie Methven and Managing Director James Rodwell stopped by to lend a helping hand in serving up Christmas dinners to the participants alongside the U21 squad and Charlton Athletic Women’s U21 players Angela Nelson-Iye and Taylor Bell, who also helped with the post-dinner raffle.

The Extra Time Hub is a social club for over 55s which meets weekly and brings together retired and semi-retired people to engage them in active ageing.

Extra Time offers a wide variety of activities for health and exercise, from dance classes, to singing, to curling.

The Extra Time Hub is all about participation, people discuss and request the activities they’d like to do and places they’d like to visit. As well as the weekly Wednesday sessions, there are a number of group day trips. Past trips have taken the Extra Time group to Margate, Herne Bay and Canterbury Christmas Market.

The Nutcracker – again!

While its name conjures visions of snow-topped trees and glittering icicles, there’s no need to wrap up too warm for this one: Kingdom of Winter is a vast, new Christmas-themed complex just over the river at ExCeL London that sounds a little like an indoor Winter Wonderland. It boasts alpine stalls, fairground rides, an ice rink and, wait for it, an ‘ Instagrammable ice expedition’.

The Nutcracker – a concert for tiny tots

Another Nutcracker, only this one’s the ballet and it’s showing at Blackheath Halls. It comes from Let’s All Dance, proprietors of creating magical, accessible ballets for children. See Clara, her Nutcracker Prince, the Mouse King and Sugar Plum Fairy brought to life in a show which prioritises ‘crystal clear storytelling’, and doesn’t scrimp on the lavish costumes, aweinspiring dancing and evocative music.

The Woolwich foot tunnel: ‘A magnificent feat of Edwardian engineering’

Well, I think you must be getting all a bit fed up with hearing about the history of our local water works so I thought I would give it a break, just for a couple of weeks. It’s about time I got back to looking at the ‘Industrial Archaeology of South East London’.

I was doing this in alphabetical order and had only just got to ‘F’ which is not very far in! So, what does the booklet, SELIA, have to say about ‘F’?

I thought one of the foot tunnels would be suitable. The Woolwich Foot Tunnel because I’ve done the Greenwich one more than once! So, what does SELIA say? Quite a lot as it happens.

“A private tunnelling scheme was abandoned in 1876 but communications with North Woolwich were improved by the opening of the Woolwich Free Ferry.

The ferry service was agreed by the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1887 and opened the public in 1889. It was the first free ferry on the Thames. The pedestrian tunnel was constructed using a Greathead type compressor air shield, with cast iron segments. The tunnel, designed by Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice, was opened in 1912 and is similar in style to the Greenwich foot tunnel.”

The Greenwich and Woolwich Foot Tunnels have been the subject of a great deal of local controversy and with Thames crossings being a major subject of public discussion at the moment, they are likely to become more so. As far as I am are aware these two Thames tunnels are one of only three or four sub-river pedestrian tunnels – all in Britain apart from one in Antwerp. They were built to allow access to north London jobs for south London residents and also to provide them with a free crossing. In an era when tolls had only recently been abolished on up river bridges it was seen as only fair that equally free crossings should be provided for residents who lived east of the Tower.

That crossing needed to go under the river rather than over it on a ferry or a bridge –

which would essentially be obstructions on the busy commercial river.

The Greenwich tunnel was the earlier of the two and a great deal more has been written about it than the later Woolwich tunnel.

In Woolwich the tunnel entrance originally sat on the Ferry Approach – but access to the ferry was moved to allow for vehicle movements and a leisure centre was built which cut the foot tunnel off from road and left it out of sight. On the North Woolwich side the entrance is visible but isolated in the centre of roads jammed with traffic waiting for the ferry. The Woolwich tunnel is much less heavily used than the Greenwich one and many people prefer to use the Free Ferry.

It was a surprise to discover that the existing Woolwich tunnel was in fact the second to be planned here. Research on the Woolwich tunnel produced press cuttings of an attempt to build a tunnel twenty years earlier – hitherto unknown.

Investigations have failed to discover any research, or indeed mention of it. It appears to have been begun in 1877 under Mr. Gilbert, engineer, with Messrs. Sharp as contractors. It is said that it resulted from an accident on the Thames when eight people were drowned trying to cross the river. It was to run from near the Great Eastern Railway station in North Woolwich and terminate in Woolwich High Street accessed by ‘an enclosed road’. The tunnel would be 1,800 ft. long and would lie 25ft-35ft below the river bed. It was to

be made up of a circular tube of iron 9 ft. in diameter and about 12ft in height. It should take four people walking abreast.

The press comment was that it would be very useful to take troops and artillery guns across the river. However by 1879 work was ‘in abeyance’. The strange thing about the press reports on which this is based is that none of them are local.

The present Woolwich tunnel was opened ten years after the Greenwich, in 1912 - by Lord Chesleymore the then Chair of the London County Council. It was designed by Maurice Fitzmaurice who had taken over from Alexander Binnie as Chief Engineer to the County Council in 1901. It was built by Walter Scott and Middleton. It is said that the provision of the tunnel owed much to the efforts of local MP Will Crooks, who had been Chair of the LCC Bridges Committee in 1898 when, it is said, the Greenwich Tunnel was planned. From 1903 he was Member of Parliament for Woolwich, at a time when the Woolwich constituency covered both sides of the river and thus both tunnel entrances.

Construction began on the north bank in 1910 with workers digging by hand and the tunnel continued to be dug in this way and, like other tunnels, used the Greathead shield. The tunnel is

1655 feet long and the top is 10 feet below the river bed –covered by 38 feet of water at low tide and 69 feet at high tide. It is a cast iron tube made of a series of connecting rings.

Like the Greenwich tunnel it was lined with white ceramic tiles and the floor was York stone flags. Lifts were not allowed for in the original scheme and they were added later in the project at an additional cost of £5,000 – and with manually operated gates. Like the Greenwich lifts they were replaced in the early 1990s with the original panelled interiors retained.

They can carry up to 40 passengers. The rotundas are red brick on a plinth of blue engineering brick, with sash windows protected by iron grilles and above the parapet is a conical roof with circular copper clad lantern. The entrances have glass canopies on cast iron columns.

They were listed Grade II in 1989.

Work started to upgrade the Woolwich tunnel in 2010 and the tunnel closed during the day as work proceeded.

However in 2010 the tunnel was closed completely as structural weaknesses were discovered in the stairways. It eventually reopened in 2011 although the lifts were not completed. The tunnel has a leaky feeder system to allow the use of mobile phones.

The tunnel continues to do the job it was built for a century ago, however modernising it, while maintaining traditional features, has been more problematic than anyone thought – and provided some valuable lessons. This makes an important point about the tunnel – it seems so simple – and yet they were major engineering works of their day, and should be appreciated as such.

To quote one report to Tower Hamlets Council ‘they represent a magnificent feat of Edwardian engineering – impressive ambition of the project - the character is consistent and defined by the finest engineering techniques of the day - the design throughout ... and fabric is coherent, logical and simple and the materials used are robust and designed to last’.

I wonder if I could finish with a brief note about the Friends of Greenwich and Woolwich Foot Tunnels with particular reference to Ian Blore, who died earlier this year. He set the organisation up and worked with it right through to the end. I think campaigners on the tunnels should know a lot more about what he did and the contribution he made to keeping the tunnels working as well as they do.

3. The above prohibitions will only apply to such times and such extent as shall be indicated by the placing or covering of appropriate traffic signs.

For Powis Street closures alternative routes would be available and indicated by local signage for: (a) During phases 1-3 diverted service and delivery vehicles longer than 8 metres approaching from the west would be required to egress via Macbean Street. (b) During phases 1-3 Diverted service and delivery vehicles longer than 8 metres approaching from the east would be required to service / deliver from Greens End. 5. For Powis Street closures alternative routes for diverted vehicles under 8 metres would be available via local roads and would be indicated via local signage.

6. For Beresford Square closure alternative routes for vehicles would be available and would be indicated via local signage.

7. Whilst the closures are in operation, vehicular and pedestrian access to properties affected by these works would be maintained wherever possible subject to the extent and operations of the works.

8. The Order would come into force on Tuesday 2nd January 2024 and works are expected to be completed in 74 weeks. However, the Order remain in force for 18 months to be re-introduced should further works be required.

ROYAL BOROUGH OF GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS – PETTMAN CRESCENT 1.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich has made an Order to facilitate critical safety bridge deck works under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

2. The effect of the Order will be to temporarily: (a) suspend one-way traffic flow (north-eastbound) in Pettman Crescent, north-eastbound carriageway, from its junction with Plumstead Road (A206) to its junction with Western Way (A2016). (b) suspend one-way traffic flow (south-westbound) in Orchard Road from its junction with Plumstead High Street to its junction with Griffin Road. (c) introduce one-way traffic flow (north-eastbound) in Orchard Road from its junction with Griffin Road to its junction with Plumstead High Street. (d) introduce a banned left turn from Plumstead Common Road to Orchard Road. (e) introduce a banned left turn from the Pettman Crescent Slip Road (between Pettman Crescent north-eastbound and southbound carriageways) to Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway. (f) prohibit all vehicles (except for business and residential access and where marshals have granted access) from entering into, exiting from, proceeding in, or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in Pettman Crescent, southbound carriageway from its junction with Western Way (A2016) to its junction with Plumstead High Street. (g) prohibit all vehicles (except for business and residential access and where marshals have granted access) from entering into, exiting from, proceeding in, or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in Nathan Way, westbound carriageway from its junction with Pettman Crescent, southbound carriageway for a distance of 21.5 metres in an easterly direction. (h) suspend the pedestrian crossing on Plumstead Road (A206) at its junction with Lenton Street. (i) suspend the pedestrian crossing on Western Way (A2016) northbound carriageway, at its junction with Pettman Crescent, north-eastbound carriageway.

3. The above prohibitions will only apply to such times and such extent as shall be indicated by the placing or covering of appropriate traffic signs.

4. Alternative routes for diverted pedestrians would be available and indicated by local signage via the footway adjacent to Pettman Crescent, southbound carriageway at its junction with Nathan Way to the footway on Western Way (A2016) adjacent to property No. 1 Goldfinch Road.

5. Alternative routes for diverted vehicles would be available and indicated by local signage: (a) For eastbound traffic via South Circular Road (A205), Nightingale Place, Plumstead Common Road, The Slade, Kings Highway, Wickham Lane (A209) and Plumstead High Street. (b) For eastbound traffic via Western Way (A2016), Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway (between Plumstead Road (A206) and Western Way (A2016)), Plumstead Road (A206), Burrage Road, Plumstead Common Road, The Slade, Kings Highway, Wickham Lane (A209) and Plumstead High Street. (c) For eastbound traffic via Nathan Way, the Pettman Crescent Slip Road (between Pettman Crescent north-eastbound and southbound carriageways), Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway (between Plumstead Road (A206) and Western Way (A2016)), Plumstead Road (A206), Burrage Road, Plumstead Common Road, The Slade, Kings Highway, Wickham Lane (A209) and Plumstead High Street. (d) For westbound traffic via Plumstead High Street, Lakedale Road, Conway Road and Griffin Road.

6. Whilst the closures are in operation, vehicular access to residential and business properties affected by these works would be maintained wherever possible subject to the extent and operations of the works.

7. Whilst the closures are in operation the following locations will temporarily be controlled by: (a) 4-way traffic lights on Plumstead Road (A206), eastbound carriageway at a point 68.5 metres west of its junction with Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway, on Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway at its junction with Plumstead Road (A206), on Lenton Street at its junction with Plumstead Road (A206) westbound carriageway, and on Plumstead Road (A206), westbound carriageway at its junction with Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway. (b) 3-way traffic lights on Pettman Crescent, north-eastbound carriageway at a point 41 metres south-west of its junction with the Pettman Crescent Slip Road (between Pettman Crescent north-eastbound and southbound carriageways), on the Pettman Crescent Slip Road (between Pettman Crescent north-eastbound and southbound carriageways) at its junction with Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway, and on Pettman Crescent, north-eastbound carriageway at its north-eastern junction with the Pettman Crescent Slip Road (between Pettman Crescent north-eastbound and southbound carriageways). (c) 2-way traffic lights on Pettman Crescent, north-eastbound carriageway at its junction with Western Way (A2016), and on, and Western Way (A2016) at its junction with Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway. (d) 2-way signalled controlled pedestrian crossing on Plumstead Road (A206) at its junction with Pettman Crescent. (e) 2-way signalled controlled pedestrian crossing on Pettman Crescent at its junction with Plumstead Road (A206). (f) 2-way signalled controlled pedestrian crossing on Plumstead Road (A206) at its junction with Lenton Street. (g) 2-way signalled controlled pedestrian crossing on Pettman Crescent at its junction with Western Way (A2016).

8. The Order would come into force on Thursday 21st December 2023 and works are expected to occur between 27th December 2023 and 5th January 2024 for eight days. The works would be conducted on a ‘rolling’ programme and, as such, not all the restrictions stated in paragraph 2 would be in force in all the effected roads. However, the Order will remain in force for 18 months to be re-introduced should further works be required.

Your guide to opening hours over Christmas As families gather across the borough to celebrate Christmas or spend quality time with their families, support will still be on offer from the council. Here’s everything you need to know about using your local services during the festive season.

Adventure Play Centres

Closed from 21 December to 1 January.

A new free-phone line to report first time repairs is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm: 0808 175 6915.

All our parks will be open except on Christmas and New Year’s Day, when East Greenwich Pleasaunce, Maryon Park and Well Hall Pleasaunce will be the only parks open.

Cemeteries Open from 9am to 4pm daily including Christmas and New Year.

Eltham Crematorium’s Chapel and Garden of Remembrance will be shut 15 mins before closing.

Contacting the Council Open normally apart from bank holidays and weekends. At this time an out of hours service will be available for emergencies.

Leisure centres and libraries There will be some changes to opening hours over Christmas and New Year.

Leisure centres For leisure centres open between Friday 22 December and 1 January, opening times will change, so make sure to take check with your local leisure centre.

21, 25 and 26 December All leisure centres will be closed.

24 and 31 December Coldharbour and Plumstead Centre will be closed.

Advice Hubs Advice Hubs will be closed from the end of Friday 22 December. The first Advice Hub in the new year will be St Mary’s Community Centre on Wednesday 3 January.

1 January Sutcliffe Park will be the only leisure centre open, with reduced hours.

Libraries

Repairs and caretaking will be running a normal service, apart from bank holidays and weekends, when there is an out of hours service for emergencies.

21, 24, 25, 26, 31 December and 1 January all libraries will be closed.

Tenancy will be closed on bank holidays and weekends, but between 27 to 29 December, will operate 9am to 5pm.

The following housing services will be running a reduced service between 27 to 29 December, from 9am to 5pm; •

Housing Inclusion will provide an emergency service for people who are homeless or facing homelessness and need urgent advice and assistance.

Temporary Accommodation will offer emergency support for urgent queries, or emergency repair issues.
