Holiday clubs across our borough will be offering festive fun this Christmas at no cost to parents or carers.

Our Holiday Food and Fun programme is back and open for children aged between four and 16 and eligible for benefits related free school meals.

There’s s-no-w reason to miss out this winter as clubs are open all over Royal Greenwich and offering activities to suit everyone’s interest.

Clubs will run from Friday 22 December to Tuesday 5 January.

To celebrate the release of the royal drama’s final season, the ORNC is running a tour of locations used over the show’s seven years of filming there. Help the elves save Christmas A heart-warming original Christmas tale is coming to the Admiral’s House this winter. It follows Santa’s elves, who have stumbled upon a forgotten bag of Christmas wishlists. With the big day itself just around the corner, can they wade through the lists in time and make sure no child is left without a gift? One thing’s for sure: they’re going to need your help! Expect singing, dancing, magic tricks and a surprise guest appearance from a friendly bear along the way. It’s an interactive show, apparently, and suitable for audience members of all ages.

A ballet for kids Let’s All Dance Ballet Company has built a reputation for adapting some of the most famous stories and grownup ballets into works accessible for the tiniest audience members. (Think short run times, mesmerising costumes and crystal clear storytelling.) Their production of The Magic Word is coming to Mycenae House this Saturday. A trio of concerts at Blackheath Halls…

A highlight of the Halls’ annual programme, the Belvedere Concert Band and Friends are returning for one night only with their staging of The Magic of Christmas. • Wear slippers, extra layers and use an electric heater, electric blanket or hot water bottle as cheaper alternatives for staying warm.

• Reduce time spent sitting and move more in the day. It’s healthy and also warms you up.

• Like walking to the Greener Game today, replacing car journeys with walking or cycling ones is better for the environment, saves you money and improves your health.

• Don’t buy things you don’t need. One of the easiest ways to be a more sustainable consumer, and save money, is to buy less.

Harps, shamrocks and all things green: NOW Gallery celebrates Irishness through fashion

For its 2023 Fashion Commission, NOW Gallery is profiling the work of Dublin-born designer Robyn Lynch, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The designer’s eponymous menswear label is a playful celebration of what it means to be Irish: her streetwear incorporates her home country’s chief motifs – from shamrocks to harps.

Both interactive and immersive, the exhibition takes place inside a bouncy castle-esque inflatable, and offers visitors the chance to try on some of the designer’s garments virtually.

Ahead of the exhibition’s opening on December 8, the Weekender spoke to NOW Gallery curator Jemima Burrill to find out more…

Why did you choose designer Robyn Lynch for your 2023 Fashion Commission?

For our 2023 Fashion Commission

we were interested to work with a designer who was from a school other than from Central St Martins, as we have had many designers from CSM. We wanted to diversify and so we made an effort to shortlist three designers, all women, and all from other universities. Lynch who graduated from University of Westminster had been on my mind for a while.

What about Robyn’s work caught your interest?

The way she uses material deadstock in a fun and innovative way is a sustainable and interesting way to create collections. Her love of her home – Ireland – that seeps through into everything she does, is a passion that is infectious. The limited colour scheme she uses, often just orange, green and

white, echoing her country’s flag, make her collections vivid and appealing. I felt she had the imagination to come up with something really exciting for our space.

How would you describe Robyn’s work to readers unfamiliar with it?

Robyn’s fashion is casual, cool men’s wear. It’s street wear with a smart edge. It really redefines what men can wear, tying different materials together so they compliment and inform each other. Robyn’s fashion is for cool kids who want to feel brave and know their own style.

What is it about her playful riffs on familiar Irish motifs that is so appealing?

It is rare that I have met a designer who feels so much love for their hometown. What I like about Robyn’s play on Ireland and Dublin in particular is that the themes she is looking at are nostalgic and we can all relate to them. In her SS20 collection, she examines the Irish summer holiday in the era of no phones and towelling shorts. It’s as if she mainlines Ireland to get a sense of belonging and redistributing that creativity,

showing how we are all part of it.

The exhibition is housed inside an inflatable structure. It sounds both exciting and very ambitious!

Can you tell us more about it?

The inflatable structure brings a lightness and fun element to our winter programme. It’s a nod to a past era, where in the summertime everyone went to the seaside and jumped on a bouncy castle. She is interested in those memories that are part of a national psyche. She describes it as “a specific world – the camaraderie, the rites of passage, the particular style”. She brings that to NOW Gallery for all to enjoy.

A short film will depict how Robyn’s practice ties into where she is from, the relationships she formed there and the importance of her community.

There’s also an interactive element to the show, allowing visitors to virtually try on some of Robyn’s designs. How does this work?

Is exhibition even the right word for the show? Or is it more of an immersive collection?

The interactive work features motion sensors that pick up on body shapes and movements, allowing visitors to literally become Robyn Lynch branded clothing with moving smiley faces. We look forward to seeing people experiencing a Robyn Lynch take on Ireland.

The exhibitions we have at NOW Gallery generally are more immersive. This one gives visitors the chance to enter Robyn’s world via her bouncy castlelike structure and see three carefully curated parts of her process. There’s a chance to see her moodboards and the images she has collected over years of what inspires her. There

Ralph and Robert Dodd and the Kent Waterworks Company

Well, over the past couple of weeks I’ve covered the first 100 years or so of the water works at Brookmill in Deptford. That’s from 1700ish to 1809. For most of that time it was called ‘The Ravensbourne Waterworks’ – but in the early 19th century that changed and for the next 100 years it was the head office of the Kent Waterworks Company Many histories of the Kent Waterworks say that it was started

by Ralph Dodd – one of the people who said that was William Morris, the first engineer of the Kent Company, who would have been in a position to know, if anyone was! Something was going on but I’m not at all sure what it was.

First, let’s look at Ralph Dodd.

was in my Gravesend youth where histories of the town tell how he intended to build a tunnel under the Thames from Gravesend to Tilbury. The tunnel was started in 1798 but it all went wrong and was never finished. Later I learnt about the Grand Surrey Canal which ran from the Thames at Rotherhithe to Camberwell and Peckham– yes, that was another one of his. It was his idea and he started it in 1800, but after a lot of acrimony he was

replaced as the engineer and it was actually built by John Rennie. There were several other such schemes.

Reading about Dodd for this article I learnt that he actually trained as a painter – an artistic painter –and then started to call himself ‘an engineer’. There were plans for a lot of tunnels and a lot of canals. There were several other schemes. Quite recently I found a reference to a gas works which he started. Now I know about early gas works and I am sure this one never existed - but there was a whole saga about debts and people who didn’t realise they were shareholders.

Then I learnt about Dodd’s interest in waterworks. It turns out that he had written a book in 1805 ‘Observations on Water’–and I’m sorry but I haven’t managed to see a copy. I understand that it says, quite rightly, that the areas that needed to be looked at for water supplies in London were the suburbs, growing fast in 1800. He suggested three new water companies – South London, East London and West Middlesex.

All of those companies were actually started by Dodd and then, following some sort of problem, were all built by someone else, and went on to be a big success.

But apparently Dodd’s book does not mention the Kent works.

Although most histories of the Kent Water Company almost always say that Ralph Dodd was involved there is an alternative in a Robert Dodd. Someone who researched and wrote about the Kent Works was H.W.Dickinson whose research was of such a high quality as not to be questioned.

He said that the promoter of the Kent works was Robert Dodd.

So, who was Robert Dodd? There are two candidates. One is Ralph’s elder brother. He was a painter - an artist - with a considerable reputation. The other is ‘Ralph’s eldest son, Barrowdall Robert Dodd, who in 1809 was promoting a water works in Deal - Deal is in Kent but a very, very long way away from Deptford and the Ravensbourne. He was, understandably, often known by his middle name of ‘Robert’.

Robert Dodd is said to have originally set out a plan to extract water from the Thames to supply Greenwich, Rotherhithe and Lewisham with water from the Thames. I do not know whereabouts along the Thames they intended to take the water from – if it was downriver of London Bridge there may already have been concerns about water quality which would not have applied to water from the Ravensbourne.

Up until 1809 the Ravensbourne Waterworks remained in the ownership of the Smeaton family.

This, presumably means his two daughters, both of whom lived in Yorkshire. Smeaton’s partner, John Holmes, London based, had died in 1797. It has to be assumed that there was a local manager who reported to someone and that someone was taking decisions beyond day to day maintenance issues. In 1899 the water rental had reached £2,000 per annum, seen as a low sum for this densely populated area which implies a lack of interest by the owners in expansion and what we would call ‘marketing’.

By Order of the Committee”. They are to contact, Samuel Taylor, Clerk and Secretary, at 10, Old BroadStreet, in the City of London’.

It appears that the new Kent Water Company, proposed by Robert Dodd, was opposed by the proprietors of the Ravensbourne Works. There was a very real legal objection because the Ravensbourne works was set up by letters patent with defined areas into which no other company could go. It would be interesting to know, if the owners of the works actually objected beyond this legal constrain and if so, what their own plans were to expand and develop the Ravensbourne works.

The first meeting of those interested in setting up a Kent Waterworks company was held at the London Tavern in Bishopsgate on 8th August 1809. Ralph/Robert Dodd is not mentioned in reports of this meeting or indeed in subsequent reports of its work. It should be noted that one of the first acts of this new company was to advertise for ‘an engineer’. This must mean that a Dodd was no longer involved.

At that meeting Sir William Rawlins was appointed as Chair. He was a typical City politician of the Georgian period. A farmer’s son, he had been apprenticed to a London weaver, becoming an upholsterer, with a City shop. He became an activist in the Upholders’ Company and in time a member of the City’s Common Council. He was Sheriff of London in 1801 and was subsequently knighted, despite having done time in Newgate for malpractice in office. He later chaired a number of new companies and initiatives relevant to the City. It is notable that there were City interests pushing the Kent waterworks - where were the Kent politicians and parishes?

At that inaugural meeting two sub committees were set up – one to sort out the criteria under which it would operate, and the other to arrange the precise details of the takeover of the Ravensbourne works. Histories of the Kent works make it clear that buying the Ravensbourne works was a condition of getting Parliamentary approval for the new company.

While the plans for a water supply from the Thames were dropped but

the areas of supply – Rotherhithe, Greenwich and Lewisham - remained.

Were the local parishes - and perhaps the Royal Hospital - keen to have the Ravensbourne works on a proper footing for the future?

What was Ralph/Robert Dodd’s role in this? What did the Smeaton family think? There are many such unanswered questions. The purchase price was £65,000.

Towards the end of 1889 advertisements appear in the newspapers for the sale of shares in the Kent Company. They are often for sale in auctions along with parcels of shares from other promotions – many of them ones which sound very familiar. For instance one advertises a bundle of shares in the ‘East London Water Works’, ‘Folkestone Harbour’, ‘Golden Lane and British Ale Breweries’, ‘Vauxhall and Strand

Kent Water Works Company was incorporated in 1809 to supply Deptford, Lee, Greenwich, Lewisham and Rotherhithe with water from the River Ravensbourne. However, despite Rotherhithe being listed as areas of supply, I don’t think they got any Kent water. The future of the Kent Company was to be very much down river to Dartford and beyond, and away from upriver Rotherhithe.

The reason the Kent Company never made it to Rotherhithe and Bermondsey was apparently because pipes to take water to Rotherhithe had to cross the new Grand Surrey Canal. At the time the canal company were building a lock at the place where water pipes were to go and they were not happy about the water pipes. So they pulled them up. Following a court case the canal company had to make a culvert to allow the water pipes through, but by that time the water company had lost interest and it was years before they put pipes through to Rotherhithe. And I’m sure that all the aggravation was nothing to do with the canal company sacking Dodd.

I will return to the history of water supply in Greenwich, while we will stick with the Kent Company for a while yet – there were things going on in Woolwich involving the military and various springs and ponds.

Meanwhile at Brookmill they at last used the power of steam.

John O’Connor’s A Christmas Carol returns to Greenwich Theatre

A Christmas Carol was the first public reading Charles Dickens ever gave of one of his own works. It was a success – so much so that the author went on to perform it a further 150 times. Here with an almost similar record of performances is actor John O’Connor, who with European Arts Company has been recreating Dickens’ reading of his best-loved ghost story at Greenwich Theatre for the past four years. With the show returning to the theatre on December 12 & 18, we look back on our interview with John O’Connor to remind us what’s in store…

Holly O’Mahony: Tell us a bit about your production of A Christmas Carol. What sets it apart from other dramatisations of the tale?

John O’Connor: It’s a one-man show based on Dickens’s own public performances of the story in the 1850s and 60s. He toured all over Britain and America performing to up to 3,000 people a night, and was an absolute sensation.

He even came and did a reading in Greenwich in 1866. We have taken Dickens’ original performance script, edited and shaped by him over many years, and turned it into a 90-minute show.

HOM: We know Dickens as a great author, but was he really much of a performer?

JOC: Dickens nearly became a professional actor at the age of 20 and he never stopped hankering after the footlights. By all contemporary accounts, he was an astonishing performer. Far

from simply reading the stories, he learned them off by heart, rehearsing them meticulously and turning them into his own acting tour de force. So successful was he, that he made more money from his public readings than from all his books and novels put together!

HOM: What made you want to recreate Dickens’ own telling of his story, rather than adapting A Christmas Carol anew?

JOC: There have been many one-man versions of A Christmas Carol over the years but the first and greatest was by Dickens himself. The show came from us wondering what it must have been like to be a member of Dickens’ own audience.

HOM: In A Christmas Carol, the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge becomes a community-spirited merrymaker after being visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Is the story as relevant today as it was in Dickens’ time?

JOC: There is always something new to discover in the story and in the telling of it. In these times of austerity and social division, the story’s themes of greed and want, family and community feel as important as they did when it was first published in December 1843.

Some of Dickens’s early readings of A Christmas Carol were in aid of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, which he helped to set up.

HOM: Are there any of Dickens’ practices you’re purposefully not implementing?

He was known to be quite the drinker…

JOC: Yes, there’s one point at which I have drawn the line: pre-show preparation.

Dickens used to have two tablespoons of rum mixed with cream for breakfast, a pint of champagne for tea and, half an hour before he went on stage, a glass of sherry with a raw egg beaten into it!

HOM: The show is coming to Greenwich

Theatre this Christmas not once but twice twice as part of the run. Why the two spaced out performances [on December 12 and 18]?

JOC: In 2019, we performed in the studio and it sold out three months before we arrived! Many people were disappointed not to see it so the theatre has put us in the main house ever since.

This year’s pantomime [Snow White] will be packing in the crowds from Tuesday - Sunday each week, so we’re taking the only other day available: Monday. It’s a nice alternative option for audiences who want to feel Christmassy but aren’t particularly into panto.

HOM: Finally, what do you hope the audience take away from seeing your production of A Christmas Carol?

JOC: This is A Christmas Carol as Dickens used to deliver it himself. There have been many versions of the story

over the years - from The Muppets to Dr Who - but this comes straight from the heart of the author himself.

Dickens used to say to his audiences before a performance: “If you feel disposed to give expression to any emotion whether grave or gay, you will do so with perfect freedom from restraint and without the least apprehension of disturbing me.” In other words, there’s no need to be as reserved as a Victorian!

Feel free to laugh, cry, gasp and wonder, in the spirit of Christmas past, present and future. He was a colourful and complex character with tremendous energy and passion, and this is what we want the audience to experience.

The effect of the Order will be to temporarily: (a) suspend one-way traffic flow (north-eastbound) in Pettman Crescent, north-eastbound carriageway, from its junction with Plumstead Road (A206) to its junction with Western Way (A2016). (b) suspend one-way traffic flow (south-westbound) in Orchard Road from its junction with Plumstead High Street to its junction with Griffin Road. (c) introduce one-way traffic flow (north-eastbound) in Orchard Road from its junction with Griffin Road to its junction with Plumstead High Street. (d) introduce a banned left turn from Plumstead Common Road to Orchard Road. 3. The above prohibitions will only apply to such times and such extent as shall be indicated by the placing or covering of appropriate traffic signs.

4. Alternative routes for diverted pedestrians would be available and indicated by local signage via the footway adjacent to Pettman Crescent, southbound carriageway at its junction with Nathan Way to the footway on Western Way (A2016) adjacent to property No. 1 Goldfinch Road.

5. Alternative routes for diverted vehicles would be available and indicated by local signage: (a) For eastbound traffic via South Circular Road (A205), Nightingale Place, Plumstead Common Road, The Slade, Kings Highway, Wickham Lane (A209) and Plumstead High Street. (b) For eastbound traffic via Western Way (A2016), Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway (between Plumstead Road (A206) and Western Way (A2016)), Plumstead Road (A206), Burrage Road, Plumstead Common Road, The Slade, Kings Highway, Wickham Lane (A209) and Plumstead High Street. 6. Whilst the closures are in operation, vehicular access to residential and business properties affected by these works would be maintained wherever possible subject to the extent and operations of the works.

Whilst the closures are in operation the following locations will temporarily be controlled by: (a) 4-way traffic lights on Plumstead Road (A206), eastbound carriageway at a point 68.5 metres west of its junction with Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway, on Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway at its junction with Plumstead Road (A206), on Lenton Street at its junction with Plumstead Road (A206) westbound carriageway, and on Plumstead Road (A206), westbound carriageway at its junction with Pettman Crescent north-eastbound carriageway. 8. The Order would come into force on Thursday 21st December 2023 and works are expected to occur between 27th December 2023 and 5th January 2024 for eight days. The works would be conducted on a ‘rolling’ programme and, as such, not all the restrictions stated in paragraph 2 would be in force in all the effected roads. However, the Order will remain in force for 18 months to be re-introduced should further works be required.

The Order will come into operation on 15th January 2024 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However, the works are expected to take 5 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, proceeding, or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading), in Woodland Grove at the junction of Trafalgar Road and make the road 2 way from outside 11 to the junction of Earlswood Street.

Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Trafalgar Road & Earlswood Street. Prohibitions remain in force; pedestrians are not affected, and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.
