Dance for wellbeing in your ‘hood Following the sad news that Greenwich Dance will wind down its operations by the end of this year, there’s at least still a chance to make the most of its remaining classes.

The organisation, which offers affordable dance classes in underserved pockets of Greenwich and Lewisham, runs a ‘Dance for Wellbeing’ programme, aimed at adults and designed to improve mental health as well as physical activity.

Sessions are running until the end of November at venues in Eltham, Plumstead, Woolwich and Greenwich. Check the Greenwich Dance website for dates and times.

A shoppable Christmas in Thamesmead Thamesmead is being dressed for Christmas this weekend. Identity explored at RMG Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) does a decent job of holding itself accountable for glaring omissions from its archives. Its Season of Identity programme is a continuation of these efforts: it looks at stories of trade, migration and the legacies of empire through art, music and fashion. Highlights include its Feeling Blue tapestry, which is currently on show at the Queen’s House. Designed by Scottish-Barbadian artist Alberta Whittle, it weaves together a story of migration, melancholy and mythology.

Still sleuthing at 70: The Mousetrap comes to the Churchill Theatre It’s the longest running show in West End history – and indeed, anywhere in the world. Now, Agatha Christie’s famous murder mystery The Mousetrap is on a two-year 70th anniversary tour of the UK and Ireland.

The story follows a group of guests snowed in at a manor house together, who realise a murderer is in their midst. With the show playing Bromley’s Churchill Theatre this week, here are cast members Toddy Carty (Major Metcalf) and Gwyneth Strong (Mrs. Boyle) on the trappings of the show…

What attracted you to The Mousetrap?

Toddy Carty: I saw it about 40 years ago, when I was a much younger man, and when I got the call asking ‘Would you like to be in The Mousetrap?’ I didn’t hesitate. I remembered it being such a great play and I’ve always been an Agatha Christie fan, having first gotten hooked on her storytelling by seeing the Margaret Rutherford/Miss Marple films on TV. Now here I am 40 years later playing Major Metcalf in the UK and Ireland tour. It’s fantastic.

Gwyneth Strong: I did it once before on tour, in 2019, and when I was asked ‘Would you like to do it again?’ my memories of that first time were so good that I thought ‘I’d love to do this again’. The audiences love it so much and it’s got such a tinge of history, especially with it now being the 70th anniversary. I just thought ‘I definitely want to be part of that’.

How would you describe your characters and their roles within the story?

TC: Major Metcalf is a retired army major and one of the guests in a guesthouse in the countryside. All of the characters have a secret and a mysterious background that audiences can’t quite put a finger on. The fourth wall, namely the audience, become detectives trying to work out who’s up to skulduggery and who isn’t, along with the real detective on stage. Major Metcalf is a typical ex-army guy. On the face of it he seems to want to help people but every now and then the characters in the play disappear and we don’t know what they’re up to, Major Metcalf included.

GS: For the poor young couple who are trying to run a guesthouse for the first time, Mrs. Boyle is a nightmare guest. She’s the last person you’d want to turn up when you haven’t really had much practice because she’s very fussy and has very high standards.

In addition to your work in theatre, the pair of you have held a fair number of screen roles in the past. What have been your favourite jobs over the years?

TC: I loved doing EastEnders and The Bill.

I did five years on and off playing Patsy in Spamalot and that was brilliant. I’d sing ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ every night and there’d be seven and eight year olds singing along, Mum and Dad singing it, Granny and Grandad, and they all knew the words. Being in a show like that is almost like being in therapy.

GS: There have been lots of theatre jobs. I recently did a play called Ladies of Letters with my friend Tessa PeakeJones. Although it was a lot of hard work, with only the two of us in it, it was an incredible experience and it went down very well. I’ve liked many of the new plays I’ve done over the years and ones I’ve done at the Edinburgh Festival. And where does Only Fools and Horses rank? [Laughs] It’s got to be quite high up there, hasn’t it?

The Mousetrap’s author, Agatha Christie, continues to be crowned the most successful novelist of all time. There have been countless murder mysteries since she penned her works, so what is it about them that keep us so enthralled?

TC: She’s been translated into so many different languages, which helps. And I do think we’re all amateur sleuths. We love trying to work out who did the bad deed. The Mousetrap is probably her most famous story and it’s a prime example of her skill at creating interesting characters and intriguing plots.

GS: She’s so clever at hooking people in. With her characters, you’re very

quick to understand who they are.

That’s not because they’re broadly drawn, it’s because she has a great ear and she can put people down on the page really well. Then of course there are the clever, intricate plots.

The show is celebrating its 70th anniversary. In your opinion, what makes it so enduringly popular?

TC: I honestly don’t know. Our tour opened at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham, where it premiered back in 1952 – it’s been going in the West End and on tour ever since. I think basically we all like a whodunnit because we’re all amateur detectives… in the audience there are kids aged 13 right up to grandmas and grandpas all going ‘He did it’ or ‘No, it was her or him’. When I first saw it I couldn’t quite work it out myself but it’s great fun trying to figure out who the killer is.

GS: I don’t know what it is but it’s got a magic about it. Even coming back to it now where I sort of know it, it feels new. That’s one of the reasons I fancied having another go at playing Mrs. Boyle. As for the success of the play itself, I haven’t got the answer.

I don’t think anyone does, otherwise they’d write one themselves.

Ice, ice baby: skating season returns to the Queen’s House

The grounds in front of the Queen’s House have been frozen over once more to become a glittering ice rink.

Set against the regal backdrop of a UNESCO World Heritage site, the ice rink offers a place to slip, slide and practise your twirls this winter, while enjoying views of both the landmark house and nearby Greenwich Park.

Opening the skating season this year is a ‘festive family fun day’, offering a chance to make some DIY Christmas decorations and listen to some carols on top of gliding on the ice.

Holly O’Mahony caught up with Sam Hindle, General Manager of the Queen’s House, to find out what’s new for 2023’s skating season…

Yes! Two things I want to highlight here are our Tiny Tots sessions for parents and young children (3 – 6 years), which takes the off-peak 11am slot on

SPOTLIGHT Tuesdays and Wednesdays. As well as this, we also have SEND sessions for those with special educational needs and disabilities on select days throughout the season – check the website or give us a call for dates and times.

This year, the ice rink is launching with a Festive Fun Day on Saturday November 25. What can visitors expect from it?

You can expect a range of activities alongside our regular skating sessions.

Get crafty at our free workshop creating and decorating your own ice crystal, or get your festive face paint on with Magic Eyes face-painting. But my suggestion would be to come along and listen to south-east London’s own The Hithertones perform a selection of classic carols and festive favourites in the beautiful setting of the Queen’s House Great Hall.

Thomas & Edge, Houdini and a lot of credit claiming

Mary Mills I had intended this week to do another episode about the history of water supply and waterworks in the Greenwich Borough. I have, however, been persuaded by a friend that water every week is a bit boring. So, something else this week - but I will come back to our local waterworks very soon.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the boat builders Cunis/Cubow who were sited on the most easterly part of where the old Royal Dockyard had been in Woolwich. This site is the one where the council is currently requiring the developer to demolish flats which, they say, have not been built to planning specifications. The site was used by industry from the 16th century through until the 1980s and this article is about a building company, Thomas and Edge, whose works were on the site in the early part of the 20th Century.

Thomas and Edge was set up in 1895 by partners John Edge and Edwin Thomas.

Details of their backgrounds are unclear - there is nothing to suggest that they came from wealthy or even particularly well connected families. John Edge would have been in his early 30s in 1895.

He had been born in Plumstead, was married, and described his occupation as “builder’s clerk” - although who he had worked for isn’t known. Edwin Thomas was in his early 20s and came from Shropshire. His occupation is always given as “building contractor”.

They moved their works onto the old Royal Dockyard site in 1915 and I don’t know where they were before that. Their site was slightly to the east of the boat building

site and the slips used by Cunis and, later, Cubow. They had a large two-storey shed and a riverside wharf with cranes, plus a yard with equipment and stores. They also had a large woodworking shop and this was probably in a range of single story sheds alongside the main building.

They claimed their first major contract was for the Goldie Leigh hospital. This was a very large scheme and their contract was for £64,000. It is unclear how much the hospital was built by them for this sum. It is difficult to believe that a contract for the entire scheme would be awarded to a small new firm and it implies they had a reliable workforce already in existence and also a reputation to deliver a contract successfully.

This problem of not knowing the extent of their contract with the Goldie Leigh Hospital scheme repeats itself throughout the early years of the company’s history.

In 1928 the firm produced a book with

a list of projects and big pictures of buildings which they said they had built.

It is implied that these buildings were constructed entirely by Thomas and Edge but no dates or details are given for this work. Today it is not hard to check the background to some of these buildings because they are included in the Survey of Woolwich or listed by English Heritage and, quite honestly, it is unusual to find any reference to Thomas and Edge as a contractor to these sites. I suspect they did work on all these sites, but perhaps not the whole contract.

I have one very good example. They claimed to have built “Ice wells, distribution depot. Messrs.United Carlo Gatti. Architect Henry Drew.” The Gatti building, near King’s Cross, is now the London Canal Museum and I know people who volunteer there. So I asked them who did construction work on this building?

They replied with: “Names of some

builders working at 12/13 New Wharf Road, N1, [now London Canal Museum] from Islington: 1906, 12 Feb: New stabling - insertion of new first floor for stables.

The architect in 1906 was Henry PhelpsDrew (c.1858-1917), who designed other buildings for United Carlo Gatti Ltd.” But we don’t have such details on most of the other buildings. In the book about their work it says that they built a number of premises in Powis Street, Woolwich. In fact they seem to suggest they were involved in the complete rebuilding of Powis Street or, that at least a considerable proportion of the work was handed to them. Survey of Woolwich lists most properties in Powis Street, sometimes giving a building’s history.

Those they attribute to Thomas and Edge in the 1890s seem to consist of shops 25 -31 in Powis Street and possibly Garret’s department store.

They describe old Woolwich Library as one of their earliest works, publishing a picture, undated and with no detail.

They are not mentioned in the detailed account of its construction in the Survey of Woolwich which talks at length about its architects. Similarly undated is a picture of another local building - the Matchless factory - which was probably built in 1911. It’s impossible to know if they actually built the whole building or not. Co-incidentally, in 1928, Matchless began to make motor cycle sidecars in a factory at Mast Pond Wharf, adjacent to Thomas and Edge’s premises.

The book also lists a number of buildings with which they were involved in central London - mainly in Regent Street. Some of these are listed and one very prominent building is part of the Quadrant at 100 Regent Street. It is Grade II listed and the English Heritage report on it is very detailed, as are accompanying statements by Westminster Council.

None of them mention Thomas and Edge but the illustration published by them says that they were the contractors.

Hmm - this in an extremely prestigious building. Similarly they claim to have built what was a headquarters building for the Co-operative Permanent Building Society, which became Nationwide, on a prominent site in Bloomsbury Way. All of these buildings, whether built by Thomas and Edge or not, are in very conventional ‘grand’ Edwardian style – nothing even remotely ‘modern’ about them.

The company describes numerous buildings it was associated with building in parts of Africa. Among many others, it illustrates the shipping company Elder Dempster’s various headquarters in Accra, Lagos Freetown. It would be very interesting to know the fate of some of

HISTORY these buildings but they give no exact addresses or indeed dates. I’m afraid that using Google Street View to find a building almost a hundred years old, in other use, in a city the size of Lagos is a daunting task.

 Queen Victoria, Woolwich

While I have been very cynical about their role in the construction of many prestige buildings I am sure that they did actually do a lot of work. They appear to have been involved in construction of a number of temporary hospitals in south London in the Great War and they built housing in the Crayford area for Vickers’ munitions workers.

One local building which they probably did actually build was the Fuel Research complex in East Greenwich, very close to the Pilot Pub. The organisation had origins as part of the gas works research on military gases in the Great War but continued with research on applications like, for instance, the conversion of coal into fuel oil. It closed in 1957 to become part of Warren Springs at Stevenage.

Thomas and Edge also built the recently demolished Maybloom club in Plumstead and the Queen Victoria – the half timbered pub at the top end of Wellington Street which is now a sort of supermarket. They also almost certainly built the Palace Cinema in Eltham in 1922. This was on the corner of Passey Place and eventually closed in 1972 and was demolished.

They also had military contracts and between 1937 and 1940 they built seven barrack blocks and an institute at Aldershot, Hampshire; workshops at Feltham, signals establishments at Woolwich, and the construction of factories, laboratories, research buildings, office blocks and ranges at Woolwich

By 1930 the firm had a Birmingham office with others at Cheltenham, Wolverhampton, Brighton and Lewes, Sussex. In Woolwich as well as the works at Royal Dockyard Wharf, they had offices in the old Woolwich Building Society’s Equitable House.

The firm was not above setting out the odd stunt. One of these in 1905 involved the famous escape artist Houdini. On stage at the Theatre Royal in Woolwich Houdini accepted a challenge from H.

C. Greenwood, manager at Thomas and Edge. He would make a box and see if Houdini could escape from it. The house was ‘packed with some 3000 people to see the American take up the gauntlet. Houdini entered the box, which was made of one inch deal, and the lid was then nailed down by Mr. Greenwood. The box was then taken into the “ghost house” and for nineteen minutes it stayed there. Then Houdini sprang out of the curtains dragging the box behind him. It was still nailed down and corded, and when opened “was found to be perfectly empty.”

In 1907 John Edge was found guilty of recklessly driving a pony and cart ‘furiously, to the common danger of passers-by in the thoroughfare. … narrowly escaped running over a lady’. This may or may not indicate a problem with John Edge but by 1910 he had left Woolwich and the partnership. By 1911 he had moved to Byker on the outskirts of Newcastle.

King’ there was a musical performance by members of staff. Some “excellent songs were rendered - interspersed with a “few toasts”. Edwin Thomas thanked the staff but spoke more seriously about ‘unsettled times”; and how the building trade was still feeling the effects of the terrible war.

‘Auld Lang Syne,” followed by the National Anthem, brought the evening to a close.

More cheerful is a report of a 1920s staff dinner at the Cannon Street Hotel. Edwin Thomas presided and said Grace. Dinner was eaten and I’m sorry that we don’t know the menu. After a toast to ‘The

 The Valley Gold Advanced Centre offers young people from CACT’s communitybased programmes the chance to train to a specialised CAFC Academy curriculum.

Valley Gold agrees to support Advanced Centre for another year Valley Gold, a fan-led membership scheme founded in 1989, has agreed to support the Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) Advanced Centre for another year. Last year, the programme had a name change following the support of Valley Gold – which is now known as the Valley Gold Advanced Centre.

As Valley Gold already funds the Charlton Athletic Academy to unearth the talents of tomorrow through memberships and competitions, it was a natural progression for them to support the Advanced Centre, which acts as CACT’s pathway into the Academy.

The Valley Gold Advanced Centre, which was shortlisted in this year’s CACT Awards in the Programme of

the Year category, offers talented young players in the U5-U13 age groups from CACT’s community programmes the chance to train weekly whilst following a specialised Charlton Athletic Academy curriculum. Programmes which feed into the Valley Gold Advanced Centre include CACT’s popular football holiday courses at various locations and Charlton Challenge.

The home will offer different placements for young people depending on their circumstances.

Public Space Protection Order for Royal Greenwich A boroughwide Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) is now live across Royal Greenwich.

The new order replaces existing PSPOs and tackles a wider range of known anti-social issues that are impacting local communities.

For example, foul or abusive language, threatening or intimidating behaviour, making comments of a sexual or gender-based nature, public urination and aggressive or persistent begging.

Under the new order it remains an offence to possess any open container of alcohol in the priority areas of Eltham, Plumstead, Abbey Wood, Greenwich Peninsula, Greenwich Cutty Sark and Woolwich.

All residents, workers and visitors to Royal Greenwich are responsible for ensuring they do not carry out anti-social behaviour in public spaces.

The Orders are to be on an experimental basis for a maximum period of 18 months and the Council will consider in due course whether the provisions of the Orders should be continued in force indefinitely by means of a permanent Orders made under sections 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Any person may object to the making of the permanent Orders for the purpose of such indefinite continuation, within a period of six months beginning with the date on which the experimental Orders come into force or, if the Orders are varied by another Order or modified pursuant to section 10(2) of the 1984 Act, beginning with the date on which the variation or modification or the latest variation or modification comes into force. Any such objection must be made in writing and must state the grounds on which it is made and be sent by email to Parking-Design@royalgreenwich.gov.uk (quoting reference 11-23 Car Club Bays).

6. If any person wishes to question the validity of the Orders or of any of the provisions contained therein on the grounds that they are not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or that any requirement of that Act or of any instrument made under that Act has not been complied with, that person may, within six weeks from the date on which the Orders were made, apply for that purpose to the High Court.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out remedial works.

The Order will come into operation on 6th December 2023 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However, the works are expected to take 1 day. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding, or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading), in Crescent Road outside 129-137.

Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via the placing of the appropriate signage. Prohibitions remain in force; pedestrians are not affected, and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
