News from the Royal Borough of Greenwich

ThE AuTuMn lEaVeS aRe fAlLiNg! Autumn has officially arrived and we’ll see a large volume of leaf fall to many of our roads.

From now until 15 December, our dedicated leafing teams help clear fallen leaves from the pavements and major roads.

Roads identified as having the largest volume of leaf fall will be swept once a week. All other residential roads will be swept every two weeks, as the leaf fall will be slower.

You can support our teams by putting leaves from your garden or driveway into your green top bin, instead of sweeping them into the road or pavement.

We aim to remove fallen leaves as efficiently as possible but there will be times when there will be a large volume of leaf fall in some places. Last year we removed over 300 tonnes of leaves from our roads.

The leafing process will include changes to the days certain roads are cleaned, but these changes will only be temporary.

A bit of flour, water and newspaper can make papier-mâché monsters.

Create a pumpkin birdfeeder.

Take the ‘lid’ off your pumpkin, fill with birdseed, add some string and hang from a branch.

If you don’t reuse your pumpkin, put it in your green top bin for food and garden waste.

Avoid plastic toys and decorations and look for items with minimal packaging.

Photographing the Black experience

Part of Black History Month, NOW Gallery is opening its doors after dark for a one-nightonly photography exhibition, profiling Black photographers whose work subverts mainstream representations of the Black experience. The works have been curated by The Photography Foundation (TPF), an organisation committed to creating pathways into creative careers for young adults from less advantaged backgrounds. Study the photos of their latest cohort and take part in interactive activities running alongside the show.

Fancy some experimental theatre?

Of course you do. At the Tramshed, Dusk Ensemble are performing their play Echo Chamber, about two human guinea pigs confined inside an augmented reality room with no memory of the past or how they came to be there. All that’s left for them to do is ponder what it means to be human. If it sounds a bit Black Mirror, you’re not wrong; the play is a musing on how the technological age is meddling with the way we humans relate to one another.

Travel the world through music Crossing continents and spanning decades, AKA Trio are bringing their worldly, genre-defying sounds to Blackheath Halls. Three friends who have been performing together for 12 years, the band comprises Italian guitarist Antonio Forcione, Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita, and Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale. Don’t miss The Fan Museum’s travel exhibition Closing this Saturday, The Fan Museum’s latest exhibition How To Get There: Travel and Holidays is a leisurely jaunt through the developments of travel. Art for all at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair Now an annual highlight in any London-based art collector’s calendar, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair returns for the eighth year running, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Transforming a large swathe of Woolwich Works into an open-plan gallery for four days, the Fair features over 1,000 artworks – all for sale – with prints from big-name artists including David Shrigley and Peter Blake, as well as emerging talent and those somewhere in between.

Now the UK’s largest fair devoted entirely to contemporary prints, it’s run by husband and wife duo Jack Bullen and Lizzie Glendinning, an artist and curator respectively, who remain committed to ensuring the fair is accessible for those on all budgets. The majority of prints cost under £1,000, and there are several available for as little as £60.

Ahead of this year’s Fair, Holly O’Mahony spoke to co-founder Lizzie Glendinning to find out more…

Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair is now in its eighth year. What’s new for this year’s event?

We’ve got a fresh hang of over 500 artists through our curated exhibition, including emerging talent, ones to watch and independent names.

There’s also new galleries in our roster bringing big names, among them Cordelia Parker, Julian Opie, Ian Davenport and Peter Blake.

Expect to find exclusive launches and a packed programme of events, talks and interactive stations from leading curators, collectors and creatives. We’re also proudly exhibiting beautiful and bold installations from international artists including Mohammad Berangi, and we have Hackney-based artist David Buonaguidi giving a welcome talk.

You mentioned international artists there. How international is the Fair?

Do you have an idea of how many countries you’re representing?

We operate an international open call, so the Fair is open to artists from all over the world. We have also been working with embassies and representatives to help and encourage artists to exhibit in the UK – navigating transport and import

costs that can often act as barriers for emerging or unrepresented artists.

Within our curated hang, which is made up of artists selected from our open call, we are aware of artists sending work from 40 countries, and then many more will be international residents within the UK. You’ve got some big names returning to this year’s festival, including David Shrigley. While his debut print is yet to be revealed, are you able to tell us a bit about what two other art world figures, David Spiller and Gavin Turk, are presenting?

The gallery Atelier Rose & Grey is presenting Gavin Turk’s ‘Holy Eggs’, which will be fantastically bold and colourful. Tag Fine Arts are launching a brand new text-based print by David Spiller, which is also celebrated by Bonham’s in their presentation for the Fair. Bonham’s are showing works

by David Hockney, Harland Miller and David Shrigley to name a few.

There’s also an interactive side to the Fair, with panel talks and workshops for visitors to get involved in. Tell us about the events running this year…

We are very lucky to be able to host some fantastic artists and academics to lead our talks and panels offering.

We’ve got daily tours at 1pm and 5pm, live printing demonstrations and some brilliant talks. Highlights include the female-led Oliver Projects running Colouring Outside the Lines with artist Siphiwe Mngami and Art & People Founder Claudia Kennaugh.

I’ll personally be hosting a panel discussion on Redefining the Printed Page, with Liorah Tchiprout and The Courtauld’s Rachel Sloane.

Is it family friendly? If so, what will there be to keep little ones entertained?

Completely! Children and dogs are more than welcome, and children under 16 go free! The Fair is running during half term and we have children’s workshops every day – our hope is for everyone in the family to

discover a love of fine art. There’s a cafe, great art and art educators to make the most of on site too.

Beyond the seasoned masters, which exhibitors are you especially excited to be showcasing and why?

Mohammed Barrangi has created our entrance. He’s a Leeds-based Iranian artist (and Paralympian) who creates sculptural print-based works and installations. He’s just installed a big presentation of his work at the San Diego Museum of Art, so he’s an exciting name to watch.

Natasha Michaels is another artist we’re excited to be platforming.

She has created some incredible pieces – I already have my eye on one inspired by the original 17th century documents and designs of the building of Versailles.

The pandemic saw you launch an online iteration of the Fair, which was so successful you’ve since continued to run it in order to offer access to people living further away. Presumably there will be an online Fair running in tandem to the physical one again this year?

Yes! It has been a brilliant tool in reaching international audiences – especially the families, friends and countries of our international exhibitors. We partner with Artsy for our online edition and also offer a 3D walk-through experience to try to replicate the feel of the Fair. This tool also allows virtual visitors to view artworks to scale in a space as close to the Fair as possible. Within our website visitors can purchase works from the curated hang and select gallery pieces, view collector highlights, access online talks from Centre for Print Research, and find out more information about our exhibition.

Gory Stories at the Old Royal Naval College It’s almost an unwritten rule: the older the building the more ghosts inside its walls.

Exploring some of its own past inhabitants this Halloween is the Old Royal Naval College, which is running a Gory Stories

Halloween Tour. As well as hearing dark and grisly stories about the college’s long-dead dwellers and their foiled mishaps, it’ll lead you to a secret location rarely opened to the public.

Roll up, roll up, it’s time for Greenwich Market’s monthly vintage car parade – only this one comes with a macabre twist: peer inside the retro vehicles, if you dare, and come face-to-face with nightmarish visions. Each car has been given a jack-o’-lantern, or skeletal, makeover for the event. It’s not only the cars that are being dressed to distress

The stage, too, is swapping thrills for chills this week. At Greenwich Theatre, a gory horror show is taking audiences behind the scenes at a meat factory, where the arrival of a fresh-face apprentice makes the workforce start to question their role in the production line – and what’s really in those sausages they’re stuffing every day. You’ll want to bring your guts for this one…

still a murder to solve as part of this ‘Out for the Count’ performance, though: Count Dracula is missing, presumed turned to dust. Who at this gathering of the Guild of Vampires had it in for him? A glass of fizz is included with your ticket, but careful it doesn’t get you talking too much. Who’s afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Having stood there regally since the Jacobean era, it’s perhaps no surprise Charlton House has some ghosts lurking in its corridors. For a Halloween adventure with an ounce of truth at its core, head on over for a spooky-themed edition of its Holiday Explorers event.

You’ll learn all about the past characters whose spirits have been left behind, and you may even spot one!

Squelch, a theatre company specialising in producing work for kids with additional speech, language and communication needs, is bringing to life the tale of the Three Little Pigs and their tormentor, the Big Bad Wolf.

Expect a colourful, puppetry-led production at the Tramshed Theatre.

CACT’s annual Red, White and Black Day involves a parade with people from a variety of community groups.

Charlton Athletic has a proud history of promoting equality and tackling discrimination. Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) and the club are passionate about building on this unique history, and opening up discussions about how we can continue to provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for our fans, and everyone connected to the club. We want to continue to build a club culture where all relationships are characterised by understanding, dignity and respect - where everyone is treated fairly, and feels valued and part of the Charlton Family.

In the lead-up to this year’s Red, White and Black Day, and as part of the EFL’s Together Against Racism campaign, the club, CACT and the University of Greenwich have ‘teamed up’ to put on an exciting programme of activities throughout the week.

This began on Monday with a Black History Month Coach Education programme event. With a theme of ‘pioneering black women who have blazed a trail’, the event, organised in partnership with the FA, saw aspiring football coaches take part in practical learning and coach development sessions at Charlton’s training ground. The participants then joined a Q&A session with former Addick Paul Mortimer and Charlton Athletic Women’s

Then, on Tuesday evening, men’s first-team players Michael Hector and Terell Thomas and women’s first-team player Karin Muya joined CharltonTV’s James Sherwood for a free webinar on Zoom to discuss their journeys in football, and equality within the sport.

CACT’s equality, diversity and inclusion work extends to workshops for young school children.

This was followed on Tuesday, when 60 students from Haimo Primary School went along to The Valley for a Show Racism the Red Card Workshop.

Ahead of the match on Saturday 21 October, the popular Red, White and Black Day community parade will be taking place, sponsored this year by

University of Greenwich. The parade from Charlton train station to The Valley will include over 300 people from the Charlton family joining to celebrate diversity and inclusion.

This year’s event tagline is ‘All Different, All Together, All Charlton’.

As a club rooted in the “Heart of the Community”, Charlton has worked with local community groups to promote equality for over a quarter of a century. In partnership with our long-standing partners, we continue to work

on initiatives designed to tackle discrimination and celebrate the rich diversity of the local community.

News from the Royal Borough of Greenwich

Hundreds of affordable homes near completion in Woolwich Councillors have celebrated the final concrete pour on a 100% affordable development of 304 apartments and houses in Prospect Vale, Woolwich.

The topping out ceremony marked a major milestone in the construction of Trinity Park, which consists of 262 homes to be let at London Affordable Rent to local people on the Council’s housing register, with a further 42 homes available via shared ownership.

Of the London Affordable Rent homes, 175 are council homes, part of our 1,750 home Greenwich Builds programme, while the rest are Paragon Asra housing association properties.

Each home will be built in accordance with the Future Homes Standard and will consider upcoming changes to building regulations, with sustainable technologies like air source heat pumps and solar panels.

Trinity Park is being built on the site of the former Morris Walk North estate as part of the Woolwich Estates regeneration project, which will create a total of 1,576 new homes. For people on the housing register, 677 of the properties will be available at truly affordable rents, while a further 167 homes will be shared ownership. The remaining 732 homes will be for private sale.

Trinity Park will provide a mix of homes alongside landscaped communal areas, play spaces and parking, and will join Trinity Walk, completed by developer Lovell in 2021.

The regeneration includes £8million of investment from Lovell to further improve the area, and the Council is working closely to ensure that social value is provided in the form of employment opportunities for local people.

Charlton greyhound track, early computers and a Wild West style bar brawl...

Mary Mills Well I thought this week we should go to the dogs. I guess most people now will have no idea there was a greyhound racing track in Charlton on the site which is now Macro. It closed in 1971 and the only thing I can remember about it is the traffic jams when there was a race meeting on.

Greyhound racing seems to be neglected in history books.

It is said to have developed after the mechanical hare was invented in 1912 in America, with the first dog racing track opening in California in 1919.

In Britain the Greyhound Racing Association held its first meeting in Manchester in the mid 1920s and it quickly became popular.

Many tracks opened in the 1930s, reaching a height of popularity in the 1940s and ‘50s and then gradually declining with closures throughout the 1970s and ‘80s. My own very scanty knowledge of the sport came in the mid-1980s when it seemed to me to be a sport available to those with very modest means who could have an entertaining but cheap evening making small bets plus inexpensive beer and sandwiches.

with technical backgrounds none of whom could understand it – despite, in two cases, a PhD in maths!

There were other local tracks some of which have closed relatively recently – Catford for one, Crayford for another.

The Charlton Greyhound Stadium opened in 1930 and I have been unable to find very much about it except for very scanty newspaper reports and advertisements.

However, John Smith in his History of Charlton managed to produce six pages about it and I’ve no idea what his source material was.

Inevitably therefore this report is going to lean very heavily on what John had to say. Clearly I can’t write six pages here and I would recommend anyone really interested to read what John had to say – it’s in Volume 3, page 330.

The first meeting was held in August 1930 in the site at the top

of Anchor and Hope Lane, which had been levelled and a track laid.

There was some sort of stand and an electric hare. It was immediately very popular and in its first year made a profit of £10,000. The initial manager was an ex-fairground showman, Thomas Murphy, who lived in a caravan on site. He died in 1932 and management was taken over by what John Smith calls ‘the manipulative ability’ of a Mr Louis.

He built a clubhouse and in 1934 it was licensed by the Allied Greyhound Association. They also held boxing matches and all-in wrestling there.

There were, however, from the start objections to meetings on Sundays by the Lord’s Day Observance Society, which initially had enthusiastic support from an organisation called ‘Bookmakers Against Races’ and Greenwich’s short lived first Labour MP, E.T. Palmer. He described it as ‘the worst example of our drift towards the Continental Sunday’. Money raised at the track to support the Miller Hospital was returned by the hospital because of these protests.

A meeting was held at the Town Hall which included a message of support from Herbert Morrison, the Minister of Transport. Every possible local dignitary made a long speech about the nuisance which this dog track was causing.

These speeches were constantly interrupted by ‘a voice’. It said things like... ‘the war did not stop on the Sabbath.’.. .’you call this meeting democratic?’...’You’ll be sorry at the next election’.

One of the most important things about the early track was, John Smith tells us, that within two months of opening it was operating the first mechanical tote. Sadly, there seems to be no information about what this machine was.

The installation on greyhound tracks of electric totalisators is important in that they were a step - albeit one in a different direction - to the development of computers during the Second World War. Like the computers it was about finding a way of solving complex problems by machine.

My own involvement with totalisators was in 1987 when I was a, fairly useless, part of a team of industrial archaeologists who went to study the system at Haringey dog track, then about to close. The Haringey machine was probably far more sophisticated than the early machine used at Charlton. It was housed in three rooms comprising stacks of small mechanical units which were linked to booths around the track where bets were placed. It then worked out the odds in real time –

and sent them to be displayed on the big tote board out above the track.

There was no system for taking it back to nil and that had to be done between races, manually, by a team of men. It was very impressive and both the Science Museum and the London Museum were keen to get components of the system for future exhibitions. There are some pictures on the net which I am pretty sure are of the items they took.

One of our team, Charles Norrie, researched and wrote up the machine in a great deal of detail and his subsequent paper on it was published by the Greater London Industrial Archaeology Society and is available on the net (http://www. glias.org.uk/journals/harringaystadium.html). Since I start looking for information on totalisators I have become very aware that Charles’ description of the Haringey machine is the only serious and detailed article about how these machines actually worked on a day-to-day basis and what they looked like.

As part of his research Charles went to Australia because work on developing the Totalisator was done by an Australian, George Julius, and there are many websites about him - he seems to be some sort of Australian hero.

In 1938 new stands were built and a Members’ Sports Club and restaurants were added. There were races for a ‘Charlton Cup’, ‘Charlton Hurdles and a ‘Greenwich Cup’.

There was never a Julius machine at Charlton. In 1937 there was a big refurbishment. The track was improved; stands were built which were covered and heated and a new ‘Union Electric Totalisator ‘was installed. This was a popular machine installed in many British greyhound tracks but I have been able to find very little about it. I suspect it was something on the same scale as the Julius machine, but the lack of information is a measure of how little research has been done on these totalisators.

Apparently the Union Totalisator system was developed by a John Handley, who may have worked for Standard Telephones and Cables in their New Southgate Works. He was later associated with Creed & Co., of Croydon. I have tracked him down through assignments on his patents - and some speeding tickets. What we need now is for someone to get copies of his patents and understand them!

The Union Totalisator Company itself belonged to John Nixon Brown (né Izod). In the 1920s he managed the Carntyne Greyhound Stadium, Glasgow, where he also promoted dirt track racing. He was later elected Member of Parliament for Govan and then for Glasgow

Craigton as a Conservative. He eventually became Secretary of State for Scotland and entered the House of Lords as Lord Craigton.

His totalisator was manufactured

by Standard Telephones and Cables and nineteen of them were installed in 1938, with a final total of eighty.

Presumably these were made at New Southgate - I am assured that it is unlikely these machines were manufactured at STC’s Greenwich

factory on Enderby Wharf.

For the next 30 or so years Charlton dog track continued in business providing an entertainment facility for local people. In 1934 the stadium was also used for allin wrestling with Gorilla, Black Eagle and Man Mountain. There were also some women wrestlers, as well – I am afraid - as some women’s mud wrestling. There

The stadium was closed when the Second World War started but reopened on Saturday afternoons and the grandstand was bombed in 1941. After the war, dog racing became an extremely profitable business but the opening of betting shops soon meant lower numbers of customers. The Council wanted to develop the stadium as a sports centre but instead the track was sold, and sold again, to various developers. It was again modernised in the mid-’60s with improvements to the stands and kennels to house 80 dogs. In June 1966 there was a Gala opening with over 8,000 punters arriving to have a free drink and a free two shilling bet. However the stadium did not do well particularly in comparison with Catford, which was enjoying capacity crowds.

The final day had to come. John Smith relates how in September 1971 at a special Gala night customers were given free tickets for Catford.

It was the end for Charlton dogs.

In 1971 I was working as a typist at Delta Metal, the only woman in a department with many men who told me about their experiences at the last night of Charlton dogs.

It was very unlike the ‘Gala’ in John Smith’s account. They told me that the electrically operated hare ‘faltered’. At this mayhem broke out - described to me as ‘like one of those fights you see in Wild West films’ where everybody in the room is throwing punches and breaking chairs over each other’s heads.

I have never been able to find confirmation of this fight in the press or elsewhere but I have been told about it by so many different people at the time and since, that I’m sure it must be true.

Greyhound racing throughout its existence remains downmarket and Charlton was as downmarket as they come. It did however provide your legendary ‘good night out for a tenner’ - a couple of bets, a beer and a cheese roll what more could anyone want?

And perhaps a final word about the greyhounds themselves, without whom the whole operation could not have happened. Let’s hope they weren’t treated too badly, and that they ended their days in comfort and as as family pets although I rather think it probably wasn’t true, poor creatures!

ROYAL BOROUGH OF GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS – VARIOUS ROADS 1.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich has made an Order to facilitate works for the implementation of 20mph zones and road resurfacing under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

2. The effect of the Order will be to temporarily: a) prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in the following lengths of roads: a. Admiral Seymour Road between Rochester Way and Prince Rupert Road. b. Congreve Road between Rochester Way and Prince Rupert Road. c. Elmbrook Gardens for its entire extent. d. Kidbrooke Lane for its entire extent. e. Moira Road for its entire extent. f. Prince Rupert Road between Rochester Way and Well Hall Road. g. Crathie Road for its entire extent. h. Scotsdale Road for its entire extent. i. Strathaven Road for its entire extent. j. Cedarhurst Drive for its entire extent. k. Vernham Road for its entire extent. l. 3. The above restrictions would only apply at such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by the placing or covering of the appropriate traffic signs.

4. Whilst the closures are in operation, vehicular access to properties affected by these works would be maintained wherever possible subject to the extent and operations of the works. Alternative routes for diverted vehicles would be available via local roads and would be indicated via local signage.

5. The Order would come into force on 26th October 2023 and would continue in force for up to 18 months, or until the works have been completed, whichever is the sooner. The works would be conducted on a ‘rolling’ programme and, as such, not all the restrictions stated in paragraph 2 would be in force in all the effected roads.
