Artist Amanni Hassan Hollands is leading an hands-on workshop titled Every Journey Leaves Traces that explores the cultural exchange along ancient sea-trading routes. It’ll look into how silks, spices, songs and poetry all made their way to the UK. Dance, music and theatre explore both destruction and creation

With Babylon coming to the Albany in Deptford this week, the Weekender spoke to its creator, Quang Kien Van, to find out more…

If we were to take a look at your CV, what would we see?

I’ve worked across dance, opera, theatre, circus, Hollywood blockbusters, music videos and even in Berlin nightclubs. In 2013, before I learnt how to fundraise, produce and get programmed, I picked up a camcorder to video bits of choreography I made of friends as a way to just make work, which led to the development of some film-making skills. Acquiring new skills has been useful now I no longer dance professionally.

What was the inspiration behind your latest piece, Babylon?

I pitched a Yes Manifesto to MGCfutures, a charity that supports theatre makers, and they gave me

a bursary to develop the idea. The Yes Manifesto is a direct inversion of choreographer Yvonne Rainer’s 1964 No Manifesto which was all about saying no to spectacle. I felt compelled to go in the exact opposite direction to Rainer, essentially, and embrace spectacle! I didn’t know what would come from the process but somehow this story of lovers and their place in the history of the universe emerged.

Tell us more about the starcrossed lovers at the heart of the piece. Are they based on anyone?

And, why did you decide to make them the focus of this work?

Many famous lovers have inspired the piece: the Ancient Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, Chinese mythology’s story of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl; Game of Thrones’ Jaime and Cersei Lannister; through to Normal People’s Connell and Marianne.

What’s it like to watch the worst things on the internet for a living?

Record it, upload it, post it: you can put anything on the internet within just a few clicks. Most of what we see is harmless (or at worst, distasteful), but that’s because behind the scenes there are people whose job it is to trawl through content, taking down the unethical and dangerous stuff before most of us see it – unfortunately often scarring themselves in the process. It’s the mental toll that being a content moderator has on its workforce that’s explored in Rebekah King’s play Moderation, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Directed by Ben Fleming and Ben Newman, and performed by Ellen Trevaskiss and Michael Gillett, the play follows two former social media moderators suing the company that exposed them to the darkest corners of the internet.

It’s coming to Greenwich Theatre this week bolstered by several positive reviews from its run at the recent Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The Weekender spoke to writer Rebekah King to find out more…

Tell us about the story behind

Moderation. What inspired you to delve into the world of online content moderators?

I read the account of a moderator who was planning to sue the company that had essentially made them sit and watch everything that could possibly be uploaded to the internet all day, every day. Their working conditions were atrocious and they weren’t at all prepared or trained for how psychologically taxing that job was going to be. My heart went out to them and I began to imagine the kind of friendship that might

develop between two people stuck in that situation. It made me think of soldiers forming strong bonds in the face of traumatic duties.

Part of your research involved interviewing people who really do moderate content for a living.

What was the most shocking, or memorable, thing you learned?

I didn’t interview people directly; a lot of court cases are still ongoing and many people who have come forward have done so anonymously and in very selective ways. I based the

play on all the interviews that news outlets have done with moderators and the information about them that is publicly available. Obviously, there are lots of horrible things that moderators have to view and remove from the websites they protect, but I think the most shocking aspect was the sheer scale of the problem and the impossibility of using humans as a shield against the dangers of the internet. Moderators often expressed how hopeless the job felt, particularly given the fact that they weren’t even referring crimes to the authorities, just removing the images from social media.

This isn’t the first outing for the play. Where might audiences have seen it before?

Moderation won two student awards and had a small premiere in Cambridge where I’ve been doing my PhD. After that, it won a nationwide competition which offered a fullyfunded slot at the Edinburgh Fringe and so has been developed for that by a new professional company. We were initially meant to be in Edinburgh for a week but were unexpectedly able to extend the run and move to a larger theatre for a second week. That’s the power of getting

Going back a bit, what drew you to a career as a theatremaker in the first place?

I love theatre as a medium and how special it can be to get people in a room together, sharing a live experience, in the age of YouTube and Netflix. I’ve just handed in a PhD that looks at magic on the early modern stage so I’ve always had one foot in the scholarly and one foot in the practical side, and student theatre has been a big springboard for me.

Your previous productions are a mix of adaptations and original pieces. How do you decide what works to stage?

It has to be a good story – that’s the foundation and the thing I hope my works have in common. The big themes and the basic rhythms of storytelling are what fascinate me most, and when I write something topical it’s almost by accident. I don’t want my writing to sound cool and clever now and become dated or incomprehensible in ten years’ time.

Lastly, what’s next for you, work wise?

ARTS & ENTS As a writer you are far less important once the script has been written and the play is on its feet. I’m looking forward to seeing where Moderation will go next, but in the meantime, I’m finishing a script based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s more obscure fairy tales, which will be partly set to music by a brilliant young composer for a performance at the Royal Academy of Music. After that, who knows – wherever the next good story takes me!

A night at the House of Lords to celebrate CACT’s achievements

The annual CACT Awards celebrates the achievements of participants, staff and partners from across the organisation.

Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT) annual award ceremony, sponsored by ITRM, took place at the House of Lords on Thursday 12 October, hosted

by CACT Vice President Lord Michael Grade of Yarmouth.

The CACT Awards is a celebration of the organisation’s wide-ranging programmes across South East London and Kent and the achievements of its participants, staff and partners from the past year.

The first award of the evening was Participant of the Year Under 18, sponsored by University of Greenwich. The winner was Harry Steptoe, a member of the youth service CACT delivers on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Harry has been involved in Young Greenwich for 5 years now, an active member of Avery Hill Youth Hub, where he also volunteers teaching other young people how to cook as well as giving them the opportunity to play a variety of sports.

Now, it’s about time I returned to my alphabetical list of sites from The Industrial Archaeology of South-East London’. Skipping a few sites - which I’ll come back to - I’ve reached ‘Dial Square’ on the Royal Arsenal site.

So what does SELIA have to say about ‘Dial Square? ‘The remaining side of the 1717 square, probably

by Vanburgh, consists of a long single story brick building with central pedimented archway’.

Now of course I am aware that the people who compiled SELIA were very unlikely to have any idea about what was actually on the Arsenal site because in those days there was no access into it - so that entry gives no sense of what and where ‘Dial Square’ is, or was.

If you look at a modern map - let’s try Google maps and put in ‘Dial Square’ - it lists nothing in Woolwich with that name. ‘Dial Square’ according to Google is the name of a bar in a football -related establishment in

North London. If you put ‘Dial Square’ into Google search it just comes up with endless north London football related sites. For someone like me, who is very turned off by both football and bars full of sporty men, that’s not at all good...Hmmmm!

So what do other my sources of information have to say about ‘Dial Square’? What does Darrell Spurgeon say in his ‘Discover Woolwich and its Environs’? He doesn’t actually mention ‘Dial Square’ but he does have an entry under ‘Dial Arch Block’. Now most people today will know that ‘Dial Arch’ is the name of the pub on the Arsenal site which has a very decorative entrance and that must be what Darrell was referring to.

Darrell also says: ‘Only the entrance front with its powerful archway remains from the former gun machining factory built 17171720, which with other buildings covered a wide area and was generally known as the ‘Great Pile’.

The design has traditionally been attributed to John Vanbrugh but it is now considered it may have been designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor’.

There is a description of the Great Pile in Vincent’s ‘Warlike Woolwich’ published in 1875 when the site was a very active manufacturing establishment. He says: ‘It consists of various fitters and founders shops but is seldom visited by the public except when there is some great casting to be made in the workshop at the back. This and the adjacent brass foundry were formally the main buildings of the Royal Gun Factories’.

This rather implies that visitors were encouraged to come and watch men at work on selected castings.

Of course, I also have ‘The Survey of Woolwich’ to tell me what is going on here and it is very, very informative –with so much detail as to be more than a bit intimidating. There is also a map from 1777 of the Arsenal site on the very excellent Arsenal website https://www.royal-arsenal-history. com/). This shows the area to the north of the ‘Dial Arch’ marked as

‘Dial Square’ and the arch is the entrance to the square - known as the ‘Great Pile’. These buildings connected and evolved over the centuries and changed a great deal.

Interestingly, although all of these histories name the area behind ‘Dial Arch’ as ‘The Great Pile’ and ‘Dial Square’ an earlier historian, Oliver Hogg, says that it was originally called ‘Artificers Court’ and was changed to ‘Dial Square’ when the Sundial was installed.

The Survey also explains how it is that a football team begun among workers there was originally called ‘Dial Square Football Club’.

Hence the sentimental naming of the North London bar as ‘Dial Square’ and connecting it with football in North London. The Survey also explains that the last

buildings of the ‘Great Pile’ were finally cleared as late as 1969.

In the interest of keeping this article at a reasonable length it would be best if I stick to the Dial Arch itself here. If you want to find out about the Great Pile buildings please read ‘The Survey of London’ which has an enormous amount of detail on them.

When the Arsenal site was finally closed and handed over to English Partnerships for redevelopment all that was left of the Great Pile and Dial Square was the line of buildings which have since been turned into a pub with the entrance through the old gateway in the middle. took place on the site I booked a room there to hold a seminar for the Gunpowder Mills Study Group, who were very keen to visit every site where explosives were made. We were put in one of the rooms which is now part of the pub and there was absolutely nothing there except some chairs. We were able to make a cup of coffee for people if we brought our own kettle and cups. There were no toilets and people had to go across the road and use the ones in the market.

The entrance now used to enter the pub is in brown brick and is described, by Historic England, as having ‘large square battered piers with moulded caps’ - ‘battered’ means the brickwork is leaning inwards from its base - and is ‘a gabled round-arched gauged brick gateway with blocked voussoirs’- which means the bricks were made of specially soft brick earth so they could be cut and rubbed.

Voussoirs are the specially shaped bricks which make up the arch. It is also described as a ‘distinctive gable-headed and rusticated arch’. The Survey of London suggests that it ‘plays with military architectural forms’ and reminds us that ‘visitors encountered this view on first arriving at the site’ and originally ‘the great warehouse loomed up beyond’.

All of which means that it was designed to make a major impression and was no doubt very expensive. A measure of how it was valued by Governments of the day.

But that’s not all. ‘The central arch is flanked by battered pylons topped with pyramids of shot’. The original piles of cannon balls had gone by 1950, but they were replaced in the 1980s and replaced again more recently.

At the back of the archway is a beam installed in 1780 which is inscribed with the names of former Inspectors of Artillery and the Royal Brass Foundry before 1855. These were generally solders who had won their reputations in the Peninsula Wars and who went on to distinguished careers and major appointments - in their case in the artillery and or Royal Ordnance. Sadly I don’t have the space here to look at who they were and what they did.

So we come to the reason why it is called

‘Dial Arch’ – in the centre of the arch is a large sundial dated 1764. This dial doesn’t seem to be listed in the various directories of British sundials and even the Survey has little to say about it. It is suggested that it was there to remind Arsenal workers about keeping to set times. It is sometimes thought that the Industrial Revolution made accurate timekeeping important. But in the Woolwich area the Royal Dockyard would have expected work to be done to time so it would be a familiar concept. A sundial is not an accurate way of setting time schedules and – anyway - there were clocks around in the 1760s! So, what was going on?

We have been rescued with information about the sundial sent to me by the ever estimable Ian Bull.

Ian says: ‘In 1756 a clock had been installed but it wasn’t accurate and the Sundial was erected to regulate and replace it. Major Oliver Hogg wrote: ‘The clock with the turret in which it was placed, has long since passed away, but the dial is still proudly displayed... Its primary purpose has disappeared and no one in these days accords the dial that attention which it once deserved’. In 1777 it was decided that the Sundial needed recalibrating. In the late 19th Century an electric clock, driven from a master clock, was erected on a north eastern corner of Dial Square. The original sundial has either been replaced or very heavily restored.”

So now these magnificent military buildings have been turned into a pub for Young’s Brewery, part of the redevelopment of the site by Berkeley Homes. I have only been there twice and on the second occasion the chair I was sitting on collapsed, depositing me on the floor.

This was ignored by the bar staff until someone from an adjoining table went to the bar and said some things after which they suddenly became very helpful – so thank you ‘unknown other customer’.

So – ‘Dial Square’ is a pub in north London and ‘Dial Arch’ is a pub in south London.

I am sure there must be a message there, but I’m not sure what it is.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich Designation of an Area for Additional Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation 2023 The Royal Borough of Greenwich in exercise of their powers under section 56 of the Housing Act 2004 (“the Act”) hereby designates for additional licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation (“HMOs”) the area described in paragraph 4.

CITATION, COMMENCEMENT AND DURATION 1. This designation may be cited as the Royal Borough of Greenwich Designation for an Area for Additional Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation 2023.

2. This designation is made on 20 September 2023 and shall come into force on 1 January 2024. The Designation falls within a description of designations for which the Secretary of State has issued a General Approval dated 26th March 2015 and came into effect on 1st April 2015 (The Housing Act 2004: Licensing Of Houses In Multiple Occupation And Selective Licensing of other Residential Accommodation (England) General Approval 2015) 3. This designation shall cease to have effect on 31 December 2028 or earlier if the Council revokes the scheme under section 60 of the Act. AREA TO WHICH THE DESIGNATION APPLIES 4. This designation shall apply to the district of the Council as delineated on the map at annex a.

APPLICATION OF THE DESIGNATION

5. This designation applies to all HMOs as described at annex b within the area described in paragraph 4 unless (a) the building is of a description specified in annex c (Buildings that are not HMOs for the purpose of the Act - other than Part 1); (b) the HMO is subject to an Interim or Final Management Order under Part 4 of the Act; (c) the HMO is subject to a temporary exemption under section 62 of the Act; or (d) the HMO is required to be licensed under section 55 (2) (a) of the Act (mandatory licensing)1.

EFFECT OF THE DESIGNATION 6. Subject to sub paragraphs 5(a) to (d) every HMO of the description specified in that paragraph in the area specified in paragraph 4 shall be required to be licensed under section 61 of the Act.2 7. The Royal Borough of Greenwich will comply with the notification requirements contained in section 59 of the Act and shall maintain a register of all houses registered under this designation, as required under section 232 of the Act.3 8. Landlords, persons managing or a tenant within the designated area should seek advice from the Local Housing Authority by contacting them as specified in Paragraphs 14, 15, and 16 to ascertain whether their property is affected by this designation.

CONSEQUENCES OF FAILING TO LICENCE AN HMO 9. Failure to license a property, which requires licensing by virtue of this designation or allowing a licensed property to be occupied by more households or persons other than as authorised by a license, is liable to prosecution and upon summary conviction is liable to an unlimited fine (section 72 of the Housing Act 2004). The Local Housing Authority may, as an alternative to prosecution, impose a financial penalty of up to £30,000 (section 249a of the Housing Act 2004).

10. A person who breaches a condition of a license is liable upon summary conviction to an unlimited fine (section 72 of the Housing Act 2004). The Local Housing Authority may, as an alternative to prosecution, impose a financial penalty of up to £30,000 (section 249a of the Housing Act 2004).

11. The tenant(s) and/or the Local Housing Authority may apply to the First-Tier Tribunal (Residential Tribunal) under the provisions of section 41 the Housing and Planning Act 2016, for a rent repayment order.

No section 21 notice (Housing Act 1988 (recovery of possession on termination of shorthold tenancy)) may be given in relation to a shorthold tenancy of a part of an unlicensed HMO so long as it remains such an HMO. 4. Persons are to be regarded as not forming a single household unless:a) they are all members of the same family, or b) their circumstances are circumstances of a description specified for the purposes of this section in regulations made by the appropriate national authority.

5. A person is a member of the same family as another person if:a) those persons are married to each other or live together as husband and wife (or in an equivalent relationship in the case of persons of the same sex); b) one of them is a relative of the other; or c) one of them is, or is a relative of, one member of a couple and the other is a relative of the other member of the couple.

6. For those purposes:a) a “couple” means two persons who are married to each other or otherwise fall within 5(a); b) “relative” means parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece or cousin; c) a relationship of the half-blood shall be treated as a relationship of the whole blood; and d) the stepchild of a person shall be treated as his child.

7. A person is to be treated as occupying a building or part of a building as their only or main residence if it is occupied by the person:a) as the person’s residence for the purpose of undertaking a full-time course of further or higher education; b) as a refuge, or c) in any other circumstances which are circumstances of a description specified for the purposes of this section in regulations made by the appropriate national authority.

8. “refuge” means a building or part of a building managed by a voluntary organisation and used wholly or mainly for the temporary accommodation of persons who have left their homes as a result of:a) physical violence or mental abuse, or b) threats of such violence or abuse, from persons to whom they are or were married or with whom they are or were co-habiting.

Certain student lettings etc16 3. A building – (i) which is managed or controlled by a specified educational establishment or is of a specified description of such establishments and (ii) the occupiers of the house or dwelling are undertaking a full time course of further or higher education at the specified establishment17 and (iii) the house or dwelling is being managed in conformity with an Approved Code of Practice for the management of excepted accommodation under section 233 of the Act18.

Religious communities19 4. A building which is occupied principally for the purpose of a religious community whose principal occupation is prayer, contemplation, education or the relief of the suffering except if the building is a converted block of flats to which section 257 of the Act applies.

Don’t miss Autumn Night Is your home cluttered?

We have launched a new friendly support group for local Lights in Woolwich! people who struggle with hoarding.

From Tuesday 26 October to Sunday 5 November, the Council will transform General Gordon Square for the first ever Autumn Night Lights events.

We are keen to de-stigmatise hoarding by creating a safe, confidential place for people who struggle with clutter to learn how to reclaim space in their home. It is confidential and judgment-free.

Also supporting our work is the London Fire Brigade, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, and the Woolwich Service Users’ Project (WSUP).

Part of Woolwich Lates, the eleven days of activity will celebrate autumn and light festivals from across the world.

The square will come alive with street food, local traders, free fun activities for children, fun fair rides and live entertainment for all ages. From dusk, a spectacular light tunnel will perfectly frame your autumnal selfies and trees will be illuminated with colourful lighting.

Autumn Night Lights will run from 10am to 8pm, except Tuesday 31 October and Sunday 5 November which will both end at 6pm.
