Bourne’s prize ballet comes to Bromley

Trans parenting explored on stage Fresh from a run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this poignant show from theatremaker Maria Telnikoff gives an honest account of growing up with a trans-female parent. Written and performed by Maria herself, My Dad Wears a Dress heads back to her childhood and unpacks the nitty-gritty of growing up as different. Spoiler, though, this uplifting show is ultimately about learning to embrace a life ‘outside the box’.

Spoofing Shakespeare The Tragedy of King Lear is about to get silly as its parodied in A Bunch of Amateurs. Washed up Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steele arrives in England for the career opportunity of a lifetime: to play the aged, misguided king in Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon. Only, he seems to have been misdirected to a sleepy Suffolk village. And his esteemed colleagues are local am-dram enthusiasts as opposed to RSC professionals. Lending the production a charming wink-wink is the fact it’s being performed by New Eltham’s own am-dram company Eldorado Musical Productions.

The production is considered a jewel of the ballet circuit and now esteemed choreographer Matthew Bourne’s take on Romeo and Juliet is coming to Bromley. You know the story of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, and we all know theirs is not a happy ending, but this beautifully staged re-telling is a chance to see it performed by some of the country’s top ballet dancers.

A mega Windrush celebration How many ways can you celebrate Windrush in just one day? At least 75 if you take part in this Black History Month cultural community event. South Africa, through its own lens NOW Gallery is preparing to get up close and personal again with the 2023 edition of its Human Stories photography exhibition. This year, South Africa is in the spotlight, with six photographers documenting contemporary life in their home country, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The exhibition is called A Young South Africa, and as the name suggests, the show is weighted towards the up-and-coming generation of adults, showing life in the country through their eyes.

Some of the collections peer inside fringe communities, capturing their lifestyles. Other works are more abstract, using costumes to create figures who allude to the nation’s sometimes turbulent and divided cultural landscape. Among the communities explored are Black women, queer skateboarders and those shaping the look and style of ‘Afrogrunge’ subculture.

The backdrop to the exhibition isn’t so rosy. The country’s basic facilities, including clean water, are reportedly in decline, while youth unemployment is on the rise. The hope, it seems, is for the country’s younger generation, ‘Ama2000s’, to build back better.

The exhibition’s arrival comes at two important milestones in South Africa. It’s been almost 50 years since the Soweto Student Uprising of 1976, and 30 since the country became a democracy.

NOW Gallery curator Kaia Charles told the Weekender: “We have chosen six exceptional artists who each provide

a unique perspective and window into some of the most vibrant youth subcultural movements in South Africa today. A Young South Africa reveals a rich collage of visual and cultural identities of South African cities, 50 years after the Soweto student uprisings and 30 years into the new South African democracy.

“It was important for us to capture elements of South African culture that haven’t been widely depicted, which is why we have selected six of the country’s most exciting ‘Ama2000s’ [Gen Z] talent who are boldly and irreverently injecting a fresh creative energy into the

global cultural scene through visual culture, music and fashion.”

The gallery’s annual Human Stories exhibition has built a reputation for uncovering and showcasing photography talent from around the world. Among those whose work has previously been showcased as part of the series are Thandiwe Muriu, Charlotte Colbert and Stephen Tayo.

Of the images going on show in the latest Human Stories edition, Kaia says: “From Bee Diamondhead’s tender and sensitive ‘Back to the Soil’ series, in which she depicts three queer male musicians, to

Karabo Mooki’s ‘Island Gals’ portraits which document Black female queer skateboarding communities in Johannesburg and Soweto, the works on show truly subvert and challenge stereotypes. We hope visitors come away with a view of South Africa that delves deeper than mainstream media depictions.”

The Hunger: post-apocalyptic horror story comes to Greenwich Theatre

Kitchen sink drama meets post-apocalyptic horror in The Hunger, the first play from female-led company Black Bright Theatre, writes Holly O’Mahony…

relationship: they fall out, they make up, but something unnerving is bubbling beneath the surface.

The Hunger. What inspired it?

The threat comes from the people outside of their secluded farm.

A neurological brain disease has swept the nation, which is caused by eating the meat of infected factory-farmed animals.

Set on a remote farm in the Yorkshire Dales, the story follows a mother, Deborah, and her 15-year-old daughter, Meghan, trying to protect themselves from the dangerous, disease-riddled world outside.

Company founders Helen Denning and Madeleine Farnhill were keen to stage work that championed female voices and reframed female characters as something other than the victim. Having met while studying together at Sheffield University, the two are also keen to produce work with other female-identifying, Yorkshire-based creatives.

Ahead of The Hunger coming to Greenwich Theatre, The Weekender spoke to Black Bright’s company manager and producer Helen Denning to find out more…

Firstly, can you tell me a bit about your work as Black Bright Theatre? Who’s behind it and what made you focus on creating dark, female-led stories?

Black Bright Theatre Company emerged from a shared vision of creating narrative-driven theatre with complex female characters at its core. I am the company’s producer and manager, while Madeleine Farnhill is our artistic director and writer. We met at Sheffield University Theatre Company and we haven’t looked back since. During the March 2020 lockdown we talked about producing a play that Maddie was writing, the result of which was The Hunger. We perform it ourselves too: Maddie plays Megan and I play Deborah.

Why did you call yourselves ‘Black Bright Theatre’?

‘Black Bright’ is a Yorkshire phrase meaning filthy or very dirty. Maddie’s mum often uses it to describe their family dog after a walk. The griminess evoked by this expression and our Yorkshire roots made the phrase an ideal name for our company and the work we produce.

Tell us about your latest production,

Ideas for The Hunger first came around when Maddie considered the fact that of all of the post-apocalyptic horror stories she knew, the majority were US-based, male-led narratives.

This made Maddie wonder what would a story in this genre look like with a mother and daughter relationship at the forefront? Better yet, what would a mother and daughter relationship look like in a post-apocalyptic Yorkshire Dales?

Tell us more about the play’s two characters, Deborah and Meghan.

Deborah is a single mother to Meghan, her 15-year-old teenage daughter. The two of them live alone on a remote farm in the Yorkshire dales, which used to run with a popular farm shop before the disease came. They only have the company of each other, cut off from the outside world entirely.

Their relationship in parts is like any other mother-daughter

The threat outside the home sounds distinctly ominous. Is it a ghostly threat though, or is it more metaphorical?

Living off their own land, Deborah and Megan have so far avoided the fate of city dwellers. The streets are now bare, and any person seen outside is a potential threat. Deborah treats them as such, whereas Megan is more willing to hope they’re just normal people trying to get help for the desperate situation they are all in.

You first staged the show in 2021.

Has it changed much since then?

The Hunger has been a three-year journey in the making. In June 2021, we put on our original two-hour show at Dina Venues in Sheffield. We then took the show on tour around northern England, before eventually taking it to Edinburgh Festival Fringe, for which we cut it down to a Fringe-friendly hour-long production.

It’s this version that’s coming to Greenwich Theatre this week.

Greenwich Theatre marks the show’s London debut. Are you taking it anywhere else before or after?

Lastly, is there a message in the story for the audience?

Our Director Natalie believes the story ultimately makes us question how far you will go to protect the ones you love. The play evokes fear and discomfort within an audience as they watch this visceral and unpredictable relationship unfold in a world that feels very dangerous. We can all connect to the feeling of being isolated, only The Hunger explores the complexities through the lens of gritty horror.

Sail across a sea of nonsense with Edward Lear

Sea Legs Puppet Theatre Company have spent the last 20 years reimagining timeless children’s stories, performing these with tiny figurines. This weekend, they’re bringing to life all the nonsense, silliness and limericks of the great poet Edward Lear in a performance at Blackheath Halls, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Called Edward Lear’s Dream, the show is fit to captivate little ones aged three and up, and is told through a whole menagerie of tabletop puppets (miniature ones, essentially). Instead of focusing on just one rhyming poem, it brings together a gaggle of Lear’s infamous characters: the Owl, the Pussycat, the Quangle Wangle and the Jumblies among them.

Lear, who was writing way back in the 1800s, is remembered today as the father of nonsense poetry. He popularised the limerick too – that

is, poems written in five lines with a rhyming scheme of ‘AABBA’.

The play begins with a tired Lear falling asleep at his desk after a long day of writing. The audience then head inside his dreams, which are about as barmy as you might imagine, taking him on a journey through a soup of gobbledygook and meeting fantastical creatures along the way.

As with all Sea Legs productions, there’s an intricate set supporting this play that may well pull on the

heartstrings of nostalgic parents as much as their little ones. And if that alone weren’t enough, the company has put a musical spin on Lear’s limericks, setting the writer’s words to six original songs.

All aboard? it’s time to set sail on the Good Ship Nonsense – you’ll be back on the land of reason before you know it.

Enter the kingdom of Disney Jiminy Cricket! London is finally getting a Disney- no, not a Disneyland, I’m afraid, but a Disney exhibition.

Disney100: The Exhibition, as it’s formally known, opens this Friday, October 13 (wish it luck!), and for 15 weeks, we Brits will have the chance to peruse hundreds of objects and treasured pieces of memorabilia relating to the American’s chief children’s entertainment franchise, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The exhibition is being unveiled to mark 100 years of Disney. More educational than a theme park, Disney100 features 250 encased artefacts relating to the brand, including letters, costumes and props. The classic movies including Winnie the Pooh, Cinderella and The Lion King get a look in, of course, but display cases are also given over to more recent favourites, including 2013’s Frozen and 2021’s Encanto.

It’s hard to believe that Disney has been entertaining kids for a century, but it’s true: the company’s records began on October 16, 1923, when a young Walt Disney arrived in California with a cartoon series called Alice’s Wonderland (based, you’ve guessed it, on the book by Lewis Carroll). A distributor picked it up and published it in print later that year under the name the Alice Comedies. After that, it was another 14 years before the first Disney movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, was released in 1937. And you don’t need us to tell you that the franchise is still going strong today, with tens more titles in the works for the next few years.

Maybe, one day, we’ll get our very own roller coaster-ridden Disney Kingdom here in the UK. For now, though, this slightly nerdier tribute to the brand is as close as we’re going to get. So if you’ve little ones in your care desperate to get up close to their magical heroes, Disney100 looks set to be a memorable day out.

Charlton Athletic’s Player Ambassadors confirmed for 23-24 season

 Terell Thomas met some Charlton fans recently when visiting CACT’s holiday football courses

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) is delighted to announce a record 14 Player Ambassadors for the 2023-24 season. There will be seven Charlton Athletic men’s first-team Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player Ambassadors, and seven women’s team Player Ambassadors, all supporting CACT’s work across the local community.

Last season saw an incredible 384 player appearances in the community in total ranging from social inclusion sessions like Premier League Kicks to holiday football courses and tournaments. This season’s aim is

to achieve 400 appearances across the men’s and women’s first-team, Academy and Regional Talent Club across CACT’s programmes and within the wider community.

Goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer, who visited a CACT football holiday course over the summer, and Mary Bashford, who is attending the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s Children in Care Awards this Friday at The Valley, will become Education Ambassadors.

Captain George Dobson, who was the Environmental Ambassador last season and engaged in a range of activities promoting greener choices ahead of the club’s Greener Game, will become the Mental Health and Wellbeing Ambassador. Last season, he recorded a video message in support of the Be Well Challenge, an NHS campaign to encourage people in South East London to take care of their mental health.

Beth Roe, who took part in the EFL Week of Action at Ravensworth Primary School in Mottingham last season, will become the Mental Health and Wellbeing Ambassador for the women’s team.

Rebecca McKenna and Panutche Camara will become the Sports Participation Ambassadors.

Sophie O’Rourke and Alfie May will take on the role of Girls/ Women’s Football Ambassadors.

Terell Thomas, who recently answered questions from lots of young participants at CACT’s holiday courses, and Carla Humphrey will become the Ambassadors for Health.

Sian Rogers, who has engaged in a number of CACT programmes throughout her time with Charlton including girls football sessions last week, will be taking on the Disabilities Ambassador role, as will Terry Taylor.

Michael Hector and Karin Muya, who are both set to feature on a panel for a Red, White and Black (RWB) Day webinar on 17 October, will be taking on the role of Equalities Ambassador. Michael also appeared in a RWB Day event last season.

Mysterious Dene Holes

I said I would write about sites in alphabetical order so – I now need a site beginning with the letter D and why not also something old and mysterious.

So this is about ‘Dene Holes’.

When I was teaching and lecturing in East London I used to say so classes ‘who can tell me what a Dene Hole is?’ There would be a stunned silence. The only exception would be if anybody came from industrial North West Kent - Greenwich to Chatham. You see I was brought up in Gravesend and people there know what Dene Holes are.

Basically a dene hole is what you find if you wake up one morning and your front garden has disappeared and instead there is a great chasm going down into the earth. Everyone would say ‘it’s okay; it’s only a dene hole’. And trust me that this has happened... We all knew about them and would say to each other - they were of course where the Danes lived when they came over here to pillage and plunder and – er - live in holes.

One of them, in Swanscombe, was

called ‘Clabbernapper’s Hole’ and he was a particularly nasty monster.

And I’ll come back to him later.

If I’m honest Greenwich is probably a bad place to include in an article on Dene Holes. There are very few in the area although they do turn up from time to time. I guess that all the excavations between the A2 and the river for sand and chalk has removed most of them. But they do turn up occasionally. The interest in discovering Dene Holes seems to have been at its most intense in the late 19th century and various intrepid explorers descended into them see what they could find. The various local antiquarian societies were interested and set up expeditions to investigate and wrote what were on the whole some fairly serious reports.

For instance, there is a report from

 The Flintknappers Brandon

1873, about a cave and chamber discovered in Eltham Park. The shaft was 140 ft. deep and 4 ft, wide; it had a flat floor made of flint, was supported by three pillars of chalk and lined with blocks of chalk. Sheep and dog bones were discovered and the explorers thought pick marks on the walls were made by antlers. The author of the report did not know exactly where this hole was and speculated, in 1873, that it may or may not still be there.

More recently three dene holes in Abbey Wood which had been recorded in 1906 by the Woolwich Antiquarians opened up in 1974. But before it could be recorded it was filled in by park keepers. They were in woodland on the west side of New Road, south of Woodlands Walk. In Wickham Lane a block of flats is ‘Dene Hole House’.

Much of the information gathered by explorers has been co-ordinated and further expeditions have been launched by organisations like Subterranea Britannica and Kent Underground Research Group. Various serious articles have appeared in archaeological and other publications.

These days when a sudden hole appears we tend to call it ‘a collapse’ and not take much notice. But all sorts of things have turned up in the past in our area, if not to the

same extent they have in some areas immediately to the south and east of us. Many were discovered in the 1940s and ‘50s when new housing was built in Orpington on the hillsides above the Cray. There are many others in Bexley - most particularly in Joydens Wood on the Bexley/Kent border and in nearby Stankey Wood and Baldwyns Park (ex Pot Kiln Lane) where enormous numbers have been found all very close together. These have been examined and recorded in great detail.

There are also dene holes in south east Essex – a very famous group are in Hangman’s Wood just off the A1013 in Thurrock – and I see that Google Maps marks the site as “Hangman’s Wood and dene holes” .

One of the leading people on the

subject of Dene Holes is Rod le Gear who is coming to speak to Greenwich Industrial History Society in January on Underground Greenwich. Rod has published a great deal on the subject.

I am also grateful for information in the Journals of the Chelsea Speleological Society compiled by the late Harry Pearlman when he was still working for Greenwich Planning Dept. in the 1960s.

Nowadays there is a consensus that Dene Holes were dug as a source of chalk which was used by farmers for improving land and perhaps were also used in building. They may have been dug by professional itinerant miners working for individual farmers and landowners. They are different from chalk mines and numerous other types of holes, even the Danes are ruled out as having lived in them. In

HIstORY the various studies of Dene Holes is a great deal of detail about their structure, size, and interiors.

Harry Pearman pointed out that one thing all the chambers have in common is that they are dug into chalk. If it was not the chalk which was wanted then why aren’t there piles of chalk lying in heaps around the entrances to the shafts? Harry, writing in 1966, also said we should note some peculiarities about dene holes which could not easily be explained - for instance the existence of 60 or 70 holes in one small patch of woods, a love of symmetry in digging the holes and the smoothing of the walls. They are also not thought to be a source of flint, although flints are found in the chalk – flint mines, like Grimes Graves in Norfolk.

Flint – and its mining - takes us back to Mr Clabbernapper. In 1820 the Royal Engineer George Landman, who built the Greenwich railway, was a married man with three children when he went off with a Miss Harriet Hayward. She was the daughter of Philip Hayward and if you go to Brandon in Suffolk there is a lot about Philip Hayward there – including his house. In 1790 he had negotiated a deal with the Board of Ordnance to supply flints for guns and other weaponry from Brandon where it went on to become a major industry. The main pub in Brandon is ‘The Flint Knappers’ . Now – that Mr Clabberknapper. ‘Clabber’ is an old word for flint. So that, pre 1790s, production of flints for the Ordnance

Church over 15 Shooters Hill Rd was from somewhere in North Kent.

Flint is a crucial component of weaponry made in the Arsenal and also in the Government Small Arms factory then in Lewisham. If anyone has any idea where this source of flints was please let us know.

It’s a shame we don’t seem to have many Dene Holes in Greenwich and Woolwich. However in 1878 a number of shafts appears on Blackheath and Greenwich and Lewisham Antiquarians set up an Exploration Committee. They found three holes and the Exploration

Committee, having not got very far, fixed metal plates at the sites of where the holes were found. They then went off leaving instructions about how to find the sites again.

Despite the instructions and the plates marking the site, as far as I know nobody has ever found either the sites or the plates. I’m copying out the instructions below in case anybody fancies having a go at them.

Many have tried in the past but that does not say we should give up.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Guildmore Ltd who need to carry out a crane operation.

The Order will come into operation on 30th October 20023 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However, the works are expected to take 7 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding, or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading), in Banning Street outside 60.

Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via the placing of the appropriate signage. Prohibitions remain in force; pedestrians are not affected, and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
