The Community Edition will keep faith with its readers by presenting news and expressions of opinions comprehensively, accurately and fairly. The staff of the Community Edition shall uphold all commonly held ethical conventions of journalism. WOMEN & POLITICS IN THE TRI-CITY EXAMINING GENDER REPRESENTATION IN THE 2014 ELECTION Women’s suffrage was achieved in Canada for white women outside of Quebec in 1960.

Women in Quebec and women of colour followed suit shortly after. While there is incredible unbalance in history of voting between genders, not to mention history of representation, Waterloo Region’s recent election saw a spike in votes for people identifying as women in all three cities.

The Community Edition crunched the numbers. Across the ballots, 3 women ran for mayor in their respective city – two in Cambridge, one in Waterloo, and none in Kitchener – all of whom were defeated. This was not the case across councils. On the Kitchener

ballot, women occupied 32 per cent of the candidacy, but gained 35 per cent of the vote collectively. The council still remains fairly slanted with only 3 of 10 wards represented by women. Notable in this statistic is the femaledominated Ward 5, where all four candidates identified as women.

Cambridge saw the most council candidates regionally, 44 for seven wards. Of this, 23 percent, or 10 candidates identified as women.

Despite the female candidacy below 25 per cent, women gained 33 percent of total votes for council and four of the seven seats available, making Cambridge the only city with a female majority council.

People identifying as women in Waterloo occupied 33.5 per cent of the ballot (six female candidates, one acclaimed) for seven wards.

Far exceeding their one-third-candidacy, women gained 42 per cent of all votes for council seats, the highest percentage proportionately in the Region. Waterloo’s resulting council is comprised of three women and four men.

While Waterloo Region’s women are not equally represented in candidacy or in elected positions, when women are on the ballot, they are garnering support that exceeds the expected statistics and winning in male-dominated races.

COMBATTING SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Wilfrid Laurier University president Max Blouw, chaired a conference call meeting on combatting sexual violence on campuses with the presidents of 20 publicly funded universities.

The presidents have unanimously agreed to review their existing policies against a respected provincial guide created in 2013 by the Ontario Women’s Directorate, which stresses the importance of a special policy to handle sexual violence and establish a reference group. Participants include academics, student affairs leaders, chief operating officers and legal counsel that will share best practices for addressing sexual assault on campus, make recommendations and hold a joint conference in February.

LOCAL RESIDENT RECEIVES ORDER OF CANADA Robert W. Cox is being recognized for being one of the world’s leading thinkers in the areas of political economy and international studies. Cox, who studied at McGill University, is a former UN officer and spent 25 years with the International Labour Office in Switzerland. Having returned to North America, he taught at Columbia University and later became professor emeritus of political science at York University.

LAURIER BEGINS INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP Two young women from the Middle East will be first-year students at Wilfrid Laurier University next September, sponsored by the university and students.

Daughters for Life Laurier was started as a seminar project by first-year students in the WLU arts course Lives of Peace and Conflict. Students from Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan or Syria can apply to the foundation and candidates are selected after an application process.

WCDSB TO OFFER FRENCH IMMERSION The Waterloo Region Catholic District School Board will launch French immersion classes for the first time in September. School board planners are confident that each class will draw three or more students away from public schools or from other boards that already offer the program. The board expects to spend almost $100,000 on start-up costs.

Starting in September, French immersion will be offered in grade 1 at three schools as a pilot project: Sir Edgar Bauer in Waterloo, St. Anne in Kitchener and St. Peter in Cambridge.

FREEPORT DEVELOPMENT FREEZE LIFTED

After more than 10 years, a development freeze in the Freeport area of Kitchener will be lifted, thanks to a new sewage pumping station. Work on the $12.25-million Freeport sewage pumping station is on time and on budget.

The development freeze had been imposed on the area more than a decade ago, when the old pumping station at 3563 King St. E. reached its capacity.

STARTUP LINKING LANDLORDS AND TENANTS Apartmint a platform, founded by three University of Waterloo graduates, lists rentals across Waterloo Region at apartmint.ca. Tenants can use a map-based search, connect with landlords and pay their rent online. Soon, landlords and tenants will be able to leave online ratings and reviews.

The downtown Beer Store reopened last month at its new King St. West and Francis St. South location. The store moved over from the northwest corner of King and Victoria streets to make room for a future LRT station and planned multi-modal transportation hub at that location. The new Beer Store building has been given an improved look that suits the existing commercial buildings on the block. Parking is to the rear of the store, accessed from Francis St. The new Beer Store continues to stock all our favourite brands (believe us, we checked this one out).

In this month of renewed hope, dreams and goal-setting, many set some type of target in health and wellness – to be more active, to get better skin or to increase energy levels.

Juicing is a glass-half-full means of approaching these goals.

Juicing is the process of extracting the liquid from plants and vegetable and separating it from the cellulose or fiber, usually by using a juicer. The extraction is an excellent source of nutrients, including minerals, vitamins, enzymes and oxygen which all play a part in nourishing and rejuvenating the body.

SOUP’S ON AT KITCHENER MARKET

DEREK DENNY DESCRIBES HIS SOUP AS A MEAL, A PASSION AND A GREAT EQUALIZER

The ubiquitous, liquid food made from endless combinations of stock, spices, herbs, vegetables and protein has been a staple of the human diet for many millennia.

Served to both prince and pauper, proletariat and prisoner, soup is the great equalizer. Broadly defined, it can take the form of a simple broth or contain a myriad of complex and carefully chosen ingredients.

Most often served steaming hot, soup is a warm refuge from a cold day or a cure-all for everything from

homesickness to the common cold.

And for Derek Denny, soup is a passion.

“Cooking in general is a passion,” says the chef and owner of Soup Surreal, “but soup is always something I’ve focused on and enjoyed. It’s what I love to do.”

As one of the newest vendors at the Kitchener Market, Denny has been working hard to make sure downtown market-goers are acquainted with his extensive lineup of made-fromscratch soups.

“Word of mouth is starting to travel for us,” he says. “We already have a lot of returning customers and regulars.”

The positive reception is in part the result of Denny’s commitment to providing customers with soups made from locally-sourced, sustainablygrown ingredients.

“Going to the farms is one of my

favourite things to do,” shares Denny.

“It’s one of those things, it takes an extra 10 to 15 hours a week of driving out to farms, but the sense of pride I get when the finished product is in the customer’s hand, knowing that that soup is local. It’s what makes Soup Surreal different than most other soup vendors or restaurants.”

Working this way is important for reasons that lay beyond the soup itself.

“It’s important to support other local businesses and farmers, trying to get a sustainable food system going and keep it running … purchasing and using those local ingredients to make a product that both the farmer and I can be proud of.”

Not only is Denny focused on the quality of his ingredients, he’s also concerned with the needs of his customers.

It’s important that they speak with me because I am the one who is putting the food in their bowl. Especially when most of my customers have some sort of dietary need.”

To accommodate for special diets and requests – gluten-free, dairyfree, vegetarian, vegan, you name it – Denny will prepare around 10 different soups to have for sale each Saturday.

“It can be a little bit challenging with timing. But it’s what I love to do, so it doesn’t wear me down. As soon as the onions are in the pot, I am more than excited to continue to do what I do best and what I am passionate about and what I love.”

In pursuing his passion, Denny says he is rewarded by the reactions he gets seeing his customers try his soup. Reactions can range from a simple sign of gratitude to sometimes something deeper.

“It’s a very powerful food. It’s very nostalgic. A bowl of soup can bring someone back to their home country, sitting at the table with their family.”

Soup Surreal operates between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m., every Saturday at the downtown Kitchener Market. Denny will also be opening the doors to a new storefront location at 98 Wellington St. in Stratford on Jan. 19.

BEST PRODUCE TO JUICE Choose wisely for the base of your juice. Dark leafy greens, green veggies, sprouts and grasses are all high in mineral content and low in sugar content (like beets or carrots). Wheatgrass juice, sprouts, kale, celery and cucumber are great places to start. Top it up with your favourite fruity flavours in your kitchen.

INTRODUCING A JUICER A wave of new year’s resolutions encourage an inundation of juicers on store shelves this month. Consider a few factors before committing to thos oft-pricey purchase. Things to consider are your counter space, budget, the type of juice you will be making and how much time you have to commit to juicing on any given day.

If you have very limited time you may consider a juicer that allows for quick juicing and clean up. Juicing sprouts and greens might call for an auger or press juicer.

JUICY DETAILS • Wash all of your vegetables thoroughly to remove any dirt.

• Consume your juice immediately to get the most benefits of the juice before it starts to oxidize.

Generally speaking you should consume it right away or within 15 minutes. You can store it in the fridge but it will lose some nutrients.

• If using organic produce (recommended), you can juice the skin of your produce (think cucumber, lemon or ginger). If not using organic produce, peel off the skin to rid the product of chemicals and grime.

• Make a double batch to increase your juice consumption for the day.

• Keep a juice bin in the fridge for stems of broccoli, kale and other veggies scraps or leftovers that you don’t use when preparing your meals.

• Focus on lots of greens with a smaller proportion of sweet veggies like carrots because they are high in sugar content.

• Before you pour out all of your juice, make sure to sample it; adjust your juice accordingly.

• Wash your juicer immediately for easy cleaning.

• If you don’t have a juicer, use your blender and then strain the pulp or just keep the pulp in for a green smoothie.

BICYCLE

A Canadian winter causes more wear on two-wheeled transporters; harsh weather, slush and the dirt contained in slush often call for a dedicated, winter-ready bike. Some cyclists prefer to use different components like fenders or wheels that can be tailored to a seasonal cycle. Start with any type of bike that you’re comfortable riding and handling. Your current bicycle (with a few modifications) can be used as well. Think carefully before taking that nice road or downhill bike out in the middle of February.

TIRES

Wide tires with a good tread (a.k.a. “knobby ones”) will provide better traction on ice than narrow or slick tires. Some prefer narrower tires for their ability to cut through snow and slush to make contact with the pavement below. Somewhere in the middle is practical. A 1.75” mountain bike tire or a 32C road bike tire is sufficient and should fit with most bicycles. Just be sure tires will fit your wheels and frame before buying.

Studded tires are a commonly discussed option that is available in

sizes for both mountain and road bikes. Metal studs in the tire tread increase traction in icy conditions. For best results, try letting some air out of the tires (about 15 per cent) when ice is expected. The tires will compress, putting more tread and studs in contact with pavement. Don’t get too confident –studded tires offer no advantage when riding through snow, and may wear out from pavement riding.

UPKEEP

More diligence is needed. Wipe your bike after each ride. Lubricate your chain with all-weather lube regularly (every 100km, or every two weeks).

Run the chain through every gear after lubricating.

Be watchful of any moving part that is showing rust or is slowed by gunk.

Use stainless steel cables for breaks and derailleurs if possible. Non-stainless cable will rust and need replacing sooner.

GEARING

Single speed drivetrains with fewer components that need to be maintained or might break down are a boon in the winter. A fixed-gear drivetrain offers a unique advantage for winter cycling; the drive moves along with every movement of the rear wheel (unlike a freewheel system where the wheel spins while the drivetrain coasts). Every slip of the wheel is felt in the pedals, providing feedback to the rider on exactly how much traction he/she has.

For easier maintenance without committing to a single gear ratio, consider an internal gear system. Internal gear systems are most commonly built into the hub of the rear wheel and have two or three gears (though internal gear hubs with more gears are available).

Many internal gear hubs also include a brake as well, doing away with another external component.

CLOTHING

Biking generates body heat that will warm you as you ride, so dress enough to keep warm but don’t over do it.

Focus on staying dry and protecting extremities (hands, feet, face and ears) from wind.

Gloves are better for grabbing handlebars, pulling brake levers and shifting gears. Mittens get in the way of shifting and braking more but they keep your fingers together for better warmth. Wear a thinner toque that fits comfortably under your helmet.

Sunglasses are a good idea for bright days.

FENDERS

RIDING

Winter bikes have a tough life. Slush will soak your bike’s components with dirt and water. First order of business is to use fenders, the longer, the better. This is an easy (and vital) upgrade for any winter bicycle. Make the addition even more effective with splash guards. These rubber flaps guard your face and clothes in the front, while the person riding down-wind will thank you for a rear splash guard.

Give yourself more distance when braking to stop safely. If the brakes are acting slippery, lightly pump your brakes a few times to dry them off before making a stop. Respect ice. Slow down. Even small patches can put you on your ass. Leave early, allow extra time to get to your destination.

Be visible. Carry bright front and rear lights for times when it is dark or snowy or both. Ride where you can be seen. As snow piles up, roads will narrow and bike lanes will disappear.

Take the lane with confidence if there is little room to share with another vehicle safely. Regional roads and roads with bus routes are often the first and best plowed. Despite the quality of your winter whip, if it is particularly nasty out, don’t ride.

I have heard people argue that sex education is not necessary until an older age. I have heard people argue that sex education is not necessary at all.

Sex education is more than sex. Sex education teaches about relationships, respect, consent, communication, decision making, self-esteem, selfconfidence, gender, sexual orientation, human anatomy and physiology, puberty, pregnancy, pregnancy options, birth control, sexually transmitted infections and safer sex.

It teaches life skills that children and teens will use every day for the rest of their lives. Sexual health and sexual well-being are an important part of our overall health and well-being. Sex education is life education.

At the moment, the Health and Physical Education (H&PE) curriculum in Ontario is intended for individuals over 15 years of age; the oldest in all of Canada. For the last four years, the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association (OPHEA) has been leading a coalition calling the Ontario government to implement the new H&PE curriculum for grades 1-12 by September 2015.

Premier Kathleen Wynne was quoted recently in the Record, saying that she had asked the minister of education to finalize the new H&PE curriculum to get at some of the root causes of gender inequality and promised an action plan would be developed by March.

Sex education has come a long way from the condom-banana lectures of your parents’ generation and can prevent much confusion and fear. I recently conducted a workshop in Waterloo Region for grade 5 girls about puberty. I always encourage questions, use the question box and let them know they can speak with me privately after the workshop.

A girl did come speak with me privately after the workshop to thank me. She had gotten her period a few months earlier but did not know what it was. She was too scared to ask her parents and had come to the conclusion that she was dying of cancer because all she knew was that she was bleeding out of a part of her body that she did not have a name for and was not supposed to talk about.

The relief I saw in this girl’s face when she realized she was not dying is the reason I continue to do what I do. This is not a lone incident, and it will continue to be the norm without a revitalized sentiment around the importance of sex education at an earlier age. WATERLOO GRAD RETURNING WITH COMEDY TOUR Michelle Christine, a 27-year-old University of Waterloo environmental studies and business grade recently took up with two other comedians after having lost her job to relocation. The comedy trio packed into a small Mazda and used the motto: “Book us and, weather permitting, we’ll get there.” An independent cross-country comedy tour at the tall-tale end of a 38-shows-in-38nights western excursion — from Victory Tavern in Timmins, to the Bijou Steakhouse in Kenora, to the Laughing Loon in Williams Lake, B.C. They are finishing the first half of their Weather Permitting renegade tour, making an eastern second-half stop at the University of Waterloo’s Bombshelter Pub on Jan. 8.

The mind meld of some of our most prominent movers and shakers, FLASH WR is a “community-based initiative to celebrate the art and science of photography in Waterloo Region, through events, public displays, and visits from world-class practitioners.”

The relationship between arts and

tech isn’t limited to the fact that most people are carrying a camera in their pockets at all times and therefore have the capacity to take great photos at any moment. It also extends to the way the images will be displayed at the event.

“We’re thrilled to be able to showcase top local and international photography through our technology, but FLASH is about more than that,” said Charles Fraresso, Christie’s senior manager of research and innovation in a press release circulated to media.

“It’s a collaboration that combines art and technology to help us see, and celebrate, the world in new ways.”

In a fated chance, Fraresso was attending the same Christie Artist-inResidence showcase by Pascal Dufaux,

as maker/photographer Darin White, photography aficionados Anthony Reinhart and Catherine Bischoff, CAFK+A executive director Gordon Hatt, and others. From there, the ongoing conversation surrounding art and tech exploded and the idea for FLASH WR came about.

someone of that scale and notoriety at the event is amazing. Having her come and speak to us all about her career and photographic journey will add a great value to the event for all participants.”

“A cornerstone of FLASH is that people’s work should be compensated if it’s going to be shown. Because photography is so ubiquitous now, people just assume it’s not worth anything… so we’re going to pay everyone who has a photo shown because we believe good photography has value,” said Reinhart.

“It’s a real struggle for content creators to get paid. There’s so much talk about the arts and culture in terms of thriving economic development of the region,” said White. “Aside from its own intrinsic value, this whole economic development angle – we really need to kick some money into it and recognize content creation.”

The relationship between arts and technology is something that is slowly coming together but Reinhart explains that collaborations between the two sectors need to increase.

“I think what is unique here is the opportunities to collaborate. In a bigger centre where there is a lot more noise it’s harder to bring people together to form those relationships.

The fact that we have a density of tech here and we have a facility like the Tannery, where the arts are on display all the time, and companies like Christie and Canon as residents in the building, the fact that all of these people are together allows for that collaboration. What we need now is more tech companies to step forward and recognize how they can help foster the arts community.”

“It’s a two way street here,” said White. “Although tech can provide some capital and equipment for the arts, the arts can provide some lateral thinking and product ideas. Give an artist a tool and they’ll likely use it in a way an engineer wouldn’t have considered. I think there’s some mutual benefit there. Thalmic Labs’ Myo is a brilliant example of how a product has evolved – from presentations to DJ’ing.”

FLASH WR released an open call to photographers of all levels of experience and will be showcasing photos from amateurs and professionals alike.

The event takes place January 23 at the Tannery Event Centre in Kitchener and admission is $10. Attendees can register for the event via Eventbrite.

ELIZABETH MCFAUL CONTRIBUTOR Paint by Munzy is the passion of Laura Munz, who opened the gallery to showcase the art of her brother Jonathan, a local oil painter, whose bright canvases have captured the eye of many walking along King Street in Uptown Waterloo. The community has been extremely supportive of the gallery which offers cards, prints and original paintings of Jonathan’s work.

The inspirations for many of the pieces come from national parks, especially Killarney and Algonquin.

“At the end of school for the sum-

mer, we would pack up the camper and go to Algonquin,” said Laura Munz. “If we weren’t there, we would usually rent a cabin on Tyson Lake in Killarney.”

These experiences are the focus of many of Jonathan’s most popular pieces.

“We travelled all of northern Ontario and the States camping, and we were exposed to a lot of art during the process, and that’s where his influences came from,” she explained.

Jonathan works with oil paint because he is able to blend his own colours.

“He’ll only work with four in each piece, and I think that’s why, with this style, they end up looking so perfect.

The colours just work together, because they are made up of a few basic ones,” said Munz. “Some of his oldest pieces, when he was just experiment-

ing [with oil paints], are some of our best reproductions, art cards and canvas prints.”

Opening the gallery was more of a last minute decision. The location in uptown came at the same time as another opportunity.

“I knew it would be a huge undertaking and a lot of on-the-spot learning, but I couldn’t give up the opportunity to be exactly where I wanted to be, in the heart of uptown Waterloo, surrounded by the local businesses I had been going to for years,” said Munz.

Paint by Munzy has been at 32 King St. N in uptown Waterloo for just over a year, and the community has been extremely supportive.

“So many customers who have purchased pieces come back to visit, and see if there’s anything new,” said Munz, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of support by everyone.”

Walking into the gallery, it’s clear that Munz has found her own passion in promoting her brother’s work. It’s a bright, inviting space that showcases the scope of his work and his talent.

Munz is able to share the stories behind each piece and bring the art to public life.

“Jonathan isn’t a new artist, he’s been painting forever, but he is an undiscovered artist because of the path that he took with keeping his work to himself,” said Munz.

“When I came home, he had 40 pieces sitting in his apartment. Part of the challenge of promoting his work has been convincing Jonathan that his work was desirable and it was gorgeous. For him, the idea of having someone come in off the street and purchase a piece and order another is unreal.”

Looking back at the beers I’ve had this year, I’m also flooded with fond memories of the things I was doing and the people I was with when I first had them. The following are some of the highlights from my year in beer, and only features beers that I tried for the first time in 2014. These are all beers that I’ll buy again if I see them in 2015.

SHOULDERS OF GIANTS Flying Monkeys Imperial/Double IPA — 10%ABV This is a big, full-flavoured, boozy, Imperial IPA, and it is delicious. After sampling its complex, varied flavours once, it was part of the impetus to take a trip to the brewery in Barrie before it was widely available in the LCBO.

KFUN 99.5 Do you find yourself constantly scanning for “the classics” on the radio? Not enough Bruce Springsteen or Elton John on any other station? Then KFUN 99.5 has you covered. Playing the “best of the best” music, spanning multiple genres and eras, KFUN has something for everybody.

CKMS 100.3 SOUND FM Kitchener-Waterloo’s other community station, Sound FM, prides itself on its diversity of programming and support of local talent. The station also hosts some of Waterloo Region’s longest running radio shows, such as the decades-spanning Coral FM. Tune in daily for the politically aware Daily GRRR, or on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8

CFCA 105.3 KOOL FM Kool FM is where you should tune your dial if you’re a fan of modern, and classic rock and pop. Listeners should expect everything from Bon Jovi, to Katy Perry, to Matchbox 20. Are you a fan of trivia? Tune in weekday mornings at 6:35 to take your stab at answering “the impossible question” for prizes.

106.7 COUNTRY FM As the name implies, this is Waterloo Region’s country station. 106.7 focuses on playing modern country hit-makers like Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood, with occasional visits into the past with Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson.

107.5 DAVE FM Dave FM has declared itself “the tri-cities best rock” and if you’re a fan of classic artists like David Bowie and Ozzy Osbourne you’ll find yourself hard pressed to argue with them.

While classic rock is 107.5’s main focus, you’ll also hear current hits from bands such as Weezer and Billy Talent rounding out its playlists.

GOTHAM Bellwoods Brewery Imperial/Double Black IPA — 8%ABV Bellwoods’ beers always rank highly with me. Combining the heavy hops of an Imperial IPA with the complex flavours of a black lager make Gotham stand out.

HEADY TOPPER & ROGUE FARMS 7 HOP IPA The Alchemist & Rogue Ales Imperial/Double IPA - 8%ABV Heady Topper is highly rated on most beer review sites, so it was a treat to even get to try this, and Rogue rarely disappoints. With lighter bodies than Shoulders of Giants, these two are more straight-up hop showcases, with waves of different hops flavours cascading over your tongue.

1-UP Block Three Brewing Imperial/Double IPA — 8.7%ABV 1-Up is a very good beer, and my favourite that I’ve had from Block Three yet. As you may have noticed, I am a fan of beers with big flavour, and high ABVs. When Block Three first opened, I felt they played it safe with their recipes, which makes sense to attract St. Jacobs tourists. With this release, and a few others this year, it’s nice to see them expanding their flavour profiles and getting a little further out there.

This beer makes me very excited to see what they’re going to put out in 2015.

D’ANGELO BACK IN ACTION AFTER 15 YEARS JAMIESON COX CONTRIBUTOR For the last decade and a half, waiting on a new album from elusive R&B maestro D’Angelo — sifting through scraps of evidence and live recordings, pursing false leads, scouring interviews with his acquaintances for new information — has become a parlour game on par with making year-end lists and complaining about each update to the iTunes interface.

A soulful singer blessed with earthly grit and a gift for dense, technically immaculate, sensual arrangements, D’Angelo was on the brink of stardom after the release of 2000 sophomore album Voodoo.

This was in large part thanks to single “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” and its incendiary video, which featured a camera panning up and down his oily, sculpted torso. The attention the video received detracted from the fact that Voodoo was both commercially successful and critically adored.

Uncomfortable with his newfound status as a sex symbol, he retreated into the background, struggling with the law and substance abuse for over a decade while his collaborators and

business associates fumbled with the prospect of a new release.

With that said, you can imagine the world’s surprise when D’Angelo — and his band, the Vanguard — began to preview new material (previously only glimpsed live) on YouTube in the middle of December. Promo single “Sugah Daddy” was made available on December 14, and the next day a new full-length, the provocatively titled Black Messiah, was released.

It’s become clear in press after the album’s release that it was fast-tracked as something of a response to the charged racial climate in America right now, itself a result of several high-profile deaths of young black men at the hands of white police.

BAND REVIEW

With a new album available to the public and D’Angelo back in the spotlight, only one question remains: does the album scrape the heights of the work that made him famous in the first place?

The answer is an unequivocal yes: Black Messiah is a stunning album, a thick stew of influence spanning the last 50 years of soul, rock and funk that pushes the boundaries of those genres forward and presents an uncompromising social and musical vision. It’s the kind of record that earns you the right to call your band the Vanguard.

Working with a crack team of session musicians and writers, including bassist Pino Palladino and lyricist

Kendra Foster, the arrangements and melodies that make up the record are surprising and technically astounding, from the gorgeous Prince-like melody at the heart of “The Charade” to the complicated, jazzy Steely Dan-isms of “Betray My Heart.” At the record’s core is D’Angelo himself, his lusty and tonally distinct growl still intact and his newfound guitar skill on display on tracks like the messy, angry “1000 Deaths.”

After spending time with Black Messiah, this much is clear: if it took a decade and a half to make an album this good, it was worth every second of waiting.

QUIET MAKES NOISE IN KW QUIET IN THE LAND FUSES RURAL ROOTS WITH COASTAL CELTIC

ANDREW MORGAN URBAN EDITOR Quiet in the Land is Dan Root and Laura Dyck. Both are transplants to Ontario from Pennsylvania who met whileattending Conrad Grebel University College.

Root and Dyck share more than having grown up in Pennsylvania – they share a love of folk music, a background in playing Mennonite hymns and musical influences that span

bluegrass, Canadian maritime and appalachian folk styles.

The duo received a Region of Waterloo Arts Fund grant to record a fulllength album in 2015, but have already been on the scene for some time. In 2012, Quiet in the Land began writing original music and by April 2014, they released their first EP, Songs to Set These Hills on Fire.

Songs to Set These Hills on Fire was recorded at The Sound Distillery studios in downtown Kitchener. The EP is just over 20 minutes with five tracks.

Despite the short play-time, this is an excellent sample of Quiet in the Land’s rural Americana meets coastal Celtic style.

What is catching about Quiet in the Land’s music is the rich composition and the interplay of each member’s vocal style, with Root bringing a genuine country/folk twang, while Dyck is soft and near-hymnal.

These strengths come together best on the track “Nothing More to Living.”

The pair seems to be aware of their strengths and play to them, which gives their music a soberness without being any less enjoyable.

JULIANA GOMEZ ONLINE EDITOR Winner of the Leading Edge Award at the 25th Arts Awards Waterloo Region, JoJo Worthington may well be the next big musical act coming out of Waterloo Region. The young musician released her first EP SOON in February 2012. I caught her as the opening act of Craig Cardiff’s December 17 show at Queen Street Commons, where I was so taken by her new song “Werewolf” that I knew I had to have a copy of her EP. It’s been on repeat for my apartment (and my neighbours) since.

The album begins with the incredibly catchy hit “Amadeus”, a song about young love gone sour that is so easy to sing along to that even the most tone deaf (read: me) can’t resist singing along to Worthington’s high

notes. It wasn’t surprising to learn that Worthington is the winner of multiple awards including Folk Category and Best Song at 2014 Toronto Independent Music Awards and 3rd place in the Folk Category for the 2014 Indie International Songwriting Competition. Her lyrics are thoughtful and deep, the kind that please when you really listen to each word. For example, I mistook “Grey Skies” for a cute, sappy love song until I really listened and found a beautiful story about unrequited love that is heartbreaking in its relatability.

At only 20 minutes long, Worthington’s tunes are so worth your time that you’ll be looking for more of her music. Luckily, her first full-length CD of eleven original songs is set to release this January, with a CD release party scheduled at the Boathouse for January 21. You can bet that I’ll be there ready to howl along with JoJo and if you love sweet songs, you will not be disappointed in joining me.
